AAA bond Winding Brook nears reality rating returns By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com
Real estate assessments down By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com Good news and bad news concerning finances were received by the Hanover County Board of Supervisors last Wednesday. In the good news category, Hanover’s AAA bond rating had been restored, while the bad news was that real estate assessments are down for the third year in a row, creating a decrease of $1.4 billion in the tax base during that period. The county has a AAA bond rating with three rating agencies. On Aug. 4, Moody’s
assigned a “negative outlook” to its AAA rating for Hanover. “Negative outlook” is defined as a risk of downgrade over the next one to two years in a particular bond rating. At the same time Hanover received the “negative outlook” assignment, 131 other AAA ratings across the country also received the assignment. At the Aug. 24 Board of Supervisors’ meeting, it was noted that Moody’s would be performing a more detailed and thorough review of Hanover’s bond rating. The review consee AAA, pg. 4

Aidan Dunn of Mechanicsville recently celebrated his 6th birthday in a very special way. After a recent trip to the Hanover County Animal Shelter, he was touched by all the needy animals. He decided that this year he would suggest his birthday party guests make donations to the local animal shelter for all the kittens, dogs and other animals, instead of bringing him birthday gifts. On Nov. 19, Aidan and his guests celebrated his birthday at Pump It Up in Ashland, where Aidan collected many gifts for the animals, including food, toys, leashes, litter, treats and bedding. Shortly after his birthday on Nov. 22, Aidan returned to the shelter to drop off his collected donations and get a full tour, including the bunnies, goats and chickens. Among those attending the birthday party and donating were Aidan’s family, neighbors and friends from Tuckaway and Cold Harbor Elementary School.

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
Barksdale: a tradition of good entertainment We have many reasons to appreciate Hanover County and all it offers to its residents and the region. Among those “good things” is the Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern. The productions cater to every theatrical preference. And you can always count on being entertained. “Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas” keeps that tradition alive. This musical is unique in that, while it has a particular country flavor, it is filled with Biblical events. And the cast delivers — and then some. Our area is blessed with incredible talent — and, thankfully, these people choose to share their craft here. It is an impressive cast and crew bringing the musical to life. Set in 1938 atop Hardscrabble Knob in Shenandoah, Va., “Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas” is a delight for all ages. There is a magical feel in the Barksdale Theatre too. Surrounded by such rich history, it’s easy to become enveloped in what is taking place on the stage. “Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas” is being presented Tuesday through Sunday up to Jan. 8, 2012. Mark this event as a must-see this holiday season. You’ll be glad you did.
Etc. ☞ We will officially welcome some new public servants this evening when an oath of office ceremony, with Circuit Judge J. Overton Harris, presiding, gets underway at 6:30 p.m. in the historic Hanover Courthouse. With three new members elected to the Board of Supervisors, it will be interesting to see what 2012 brings. Like the rest of our nation, we face economic challenges. Stay tuned as budget season kicks into gear. ☞ And, of course, the constitutional officeholders who were unopposed in the November election also will participate in the oath of office ceremony. Follow us on Facebook for more on the event. Melody Kinser

needing attention are as follows. Our real estate appraisers: Why do we need them? They are a kind of charlatan, practicing apprasiary (not a real word) to get more tax dollars. We just saw the results of their past appraising. Their guesswork/fortunetelling has cost us all thousands. Just like jewelry appraisers. They appraise your jewelry for $9,000; you ask them how much they will give you for it and they offer $450. Your house is only worth what you sell it for and that should be the taxed value. Raise the tax rate so everyone pays the same and leave the rest alone until its sold. Following example: I just repurchased a house that I had purchased in 1993 for $40,000; I sold it some years later for $80,000 and just bought it back this year for $115.500; it is appraised by the county (for tax purposes) at $198,100. I will sell it to any of the appraisers for $165,000; they can make $33,100 to put in their pocket. Elect the School Board and Planning Commission. Why appoint and have people indebted to each other? Let the taxpayers vote on and approve a clear detailed budget every year. With two golfers (maybe three) on the board now, let’s think about a taxpayer-funded Golfer’s Park with fairways and greens for the golfers in the

Obama’s war on the rich Questions: Why does President Obama hate the rich? Wasn’t it the rich that created thousands of jobs in the private sector that helped make America the strongest economy in the world? Why does Obama want to tear them down? Answer: It is his agenda to make all Americans dependent on the government. He blames the rich for all of his problems. He must, therefore, tear down the rich along with the private sector in order for his agenda to progress and succeed. All those who work, produce and achieve in the private sector are prime targets for him. To those of you who have access, you should read the

Communist Manifesto. You will be alarmed as to how close President Obama’s agenda correlates to it. He is, in fact, a Socialist with a Marxist agenda. Proof: Notice how often he says fair and fair share in his speeches. Lenin used the same words in Russian. The 2012 election will not be Obama against the GOP or whatever party, it will be Obama against the United States of America. Obama’s march towards Socialism/Marxism must be stopped. The only way to do it is at the voting booth, while everyone still has that right. If you value your God-given freedoms, liberties and the lives of your children and your children’s children, you must oust this socialist ideologue of a president along with all of those who worship him in Congress who are also up for re-election. The coming election is just that critical. God help us all. Wilma Royer Mechanicsville

Memories of Christmas Create Excitement
2508338-01
Sunday, December 4 was a beautiful afternoon of clear, crisp air; a hint of coming winter cold; an ideal time for the annual Mechanicsville Christmas Parade sponsored by the Mechanicsville Rotary and Ruritan Clubs. This year the theme, “Memories of Christmas”, provided the backdrop for nearly 100 units of floats and marchers and bands to dazzle the largest crowd ever to see the parade. In keeping, too, with the best wishes of the season, the Ruritan Club donated all of the concession sales, more than $1000, to the Hanover Christmas Mother. We wish to thank our donors and event sponsors for the contributions to make the parade possible: Atwood Printing Company, Chick-Fil- A, Downtown 7-11, Dunn’s Drive-in, J. Early Woods Golf Carts,MechanicsvilleDrugStore,MeritaBread,McDonald’s,Mid-AtlanticCoca-Cola,OfficeMax of Mechanicsville, Radio Communications of America, Sheehy Nissan of Mechanicsville, Spring Run Bottling Co., Tuckaway, US Food, UTZ, and The Mechanicsville Local. We wish to thank the following individuals for significant effort to make the event a success: Luke Gipson, Mark Gray, Bobby Mawyer, Sarah Mawyer, Brian Planz, Kevin Smyth, and Melinda Smyth. To our Grand Marshall, Sabrina Squire; our Judges, Joy Monopoli, Pam Sanders, and Ken Odor; Hanover Christmas Mother, Ann Cross; and our emcee, Jack Ward we offer express appreciation. And in keeping with a safe, secure, and delightful holiday season, we are indebted to the men and women of the Hanover Sheriff’s Department, especially Captain David Vermeer and Sergeant Scott Cary. Each year, dozens of the finest offer their time and talents for our neighborhood parade to remain exactly as we picture it - a place for children of all ages to enjoy the coming Christmas season and joy to the world.

The students delivered the food to the Central Virginia Food Bank and were able to take a tour of the newly renovated building. Thanks were extended to Agape Racing and Hobby LLC company for its $500 donation and to all the ACA families for donating non-perishable items. The combined total donations were able to provide 3,168 meals.

What Tech needs to do Since Virginia Tech officials knew — for a few hours before this latest murder — that a vehicle stolen by a man known to be armed and dangerous was on its campus, one of two things must be true: Either the school did not issue any sort of alert to all campus police after locating the car, in which case it let Deriek Crouse walk into a deathtrap, or the school did have its police on alert, in which case the university — once again — failed to give public notice of the fact that it had specific and credible knowledge of a gun-wielding felon on the loose until it was too late. Whichever is true, how many more times does Virginia Tech have to mismanage campus security to the point of a chalk outline before a change of leadership occurs? Recall too that all this happened not 24 hours after Virginia Tech administrators were fighting to dismiss a $55,000 fine by the Feds for their lapses in issuing timely warnings two on-campus murderers ago. I understand the cold calculus of putting the Virginia Tech brand ahead of the life of students, staff and faculty. People, after all, are a renewable resource, but few teams can sell out the Sugar Bowl. But at some point, does not the body count created by Virginia Tech’s now-serial habit of mishandling campus safety
become a greater liability to that brand than does the admission of president Charles Steger’s twicedemonstrated incompetence? How many more have to die in Blacksburg before the Board of Visitors acts responsibly? Joseph Pierro Mechanicsville
Christmas is with family Why is there a rush to go to the movie theater on Christmas day after lunch? Surely we can spend one whole day with the family at home. Why are there no church services on Christmas Day? Surely that is the one day that a church service is necessary. My parents in England followed their family tradi-
tion. When the children woke up they were brought in the Christmas stockings that Santa had left to open while they were still in bed. These were filled with small gifts and candy. Then the children got washed and dressed and had breakfast. Then they were allowed in the living room where Santa had left larger gifts on the sofa. Then maybe off to a church service. Back for lunch and after lunch the Christmas gifts under the tree from friends and relatives were opened. Then it was tea or dinner time around 6 p.m. and after dinner it was the special time when the children received their special gifts from their mom and dad. In that way the gifts were
spread out during the whole day and still had room for staple meals breakfast, lunch and dinner and they hadn’t opened all their gifts by 8 a.m. and got bored by lunch time. We also need the parents to have the 26th of December off as a holiday, the same as it is in England. Why look forward to Christmas Day for so long and then have to go to bed early because one has to go to work the following day? However you spend Christmas Day remember to enjoy your family and friends and the time you have with them. You never know when it may not happen again. And, as Tiny Tim says, “God bless us everyone.” Joan Austen Mechanicsville see LETTERS, pg. 17

MRMC among Top 50 for cardiac care Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center and St. Mary’s Hospital and have been named among the top hospitals in the nation, and the only two in Virginia, for inpatient cardiovascular services by Thomson Reuters, an industry leader in health care data. The Bon Secours hospitals are named for superior clinical outcomes, a recognition based on a comprehensive review measuring key areas that include mortality, complications, readmission rates, length of stay and costs.
The study, in its 13th year, singled out 50 top hospitals among hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. “We are proud of our outcomes and honored to be recognized for the work we’ve done,” said Marc R. Katz, M.D., a cardiac surgeon and the chief medical officer of the Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute (H&VI). “Not only do our patients have access to the most advanced cardiac techniques, they benefit from a full range of treatment options, from medical management to cardiac rehabilitation and wellness
programs.” With more than 40 physicians, surgeons and specialists, the H&VI comprises seven hospitals spanning central and eastern Virginia. The H&VI is known for its minimally invasive valve surgery the only program in Virginia to perform Mitral Valve repair surgery robotically and for its work with the ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Hanover County urges citizens who normally use the Mechanicsville Convenience Center on Verdi Lane to expect bigger crowds and longer waits the Monday after Christmas. As an alternative, plan on taking your solid waste and recycling to “less busy” centers such as the U.S. 301/Courthouse Convenience Center on Courtland Farm Road near Hanover Courthouse. Waiting until later in the week is another option. Lines could be particularly long the Monday after Christmas because centers will have been closed the two previous days, Dec. 24-25. December 23, 1961 Stony Creek, Sussex County, Va. Things were buzzing, snow was falling and sleet & rain mixed. What a day for a wedding, all of our friends were saying “No way will this marriage last; they only met in May of 1961. But it is sure great to be able to say we made it work, laughing and learning from each other. The 25th year anniversary was a celebration but we are happy the way we are, thankful for each day, so the 50th will be
quiet. We both will say on the 50th, this is better than our wedding day, because we know how it worked out. Each day a miracle and pray for many more healthy days with our son, Bernard, precious daughterin-law, Sherry, many cats and many treasures of friends. Thank you God for leading us in the right direction. Barbara & Jerry Jacks

The Sheriff ’s Office responded around 3 p.m. to Lark Way to investigate a report of a man down. When deputies arrived, they found a deceased black male lying on the ground near a fence behind a residence on Lark Way. According to the preliminary investigation, Clark sustained a gunshot wound while visiting a residence on Lark Way. After being shot, Clark’s body was moved from the home and left on the adjacent property. Robertson is currently incarcerated at Merrimac Juvenile Detention Facility. Two other individuals, a 17year-old and 18-year-old, were each charged with accessory after the fact in this case. Due to the nature of this investigation, identifying information for these two individuals will not be released at this time. Investigators are continuing to conduct interviews and evaluate forensic evidence, as well as consulting and informing the Commonwealth’s Attorney on all aspects of this case. “The Sheriff ’s Office joins the community in mourning the tragic death of Jyreffe Clark,” Trice said on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff. “We ask that the community keep the Clark family in their thoughts and prayers.”

Kidstuf is virtue driven where character and faith are taught by emphasizing a monthly virtue. The January virtue is self control - choosing to do what you should do, not what you want to do. It is a place where parents and their children can come together in a unique environment that will give them a shared experience that they can discuss further together during the week. It is free to the community and there will be a variety of activities to enjoy before Kidstuf beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Kidstuf theatre opens its doors at 7:15 p.m. for the production. Experienced Hawks too much for young Raiders
Dave Lawrence for The Local
Hanover’s Lynnse Caler goes up for a jump shot while a host of Raiders try to top her. She scored eight points in the third quarter against Atlee.
By Dave Lawrence sports@mechlocal.com Hanover gave Atlee’s young, inexperienced girls’ basketball team something of an education Tuesday night. It was a painful lesson, however, as the Hawks strangled the Raiders’ offense en route to a 55-29 Capital District victory. Hanover’s Brooke

Throckmorton, with three 3-pointers, led all scorers with 10 points. Atlee was led by Steff Staples with nine points. The only quarter in which Atlee reached double digits was the fourth, in which the Raiders outscored Hanover 12-8. But in the first and third quarters, Atlee was held to just four points. Despite the margin of vic-

tory, Hanover coach Kevin Brooks was not too pleased by what he saw early on. “It was a very sloppy game. We were lethargic coming out,” Brooks said. “April Lankford and Rachel Fehl really carried us in the first half. I think they scored 16 of our 28. So when we got it inside and really attacked the basket, good things happened in the first half. We

just didn’t do enough of it. We got a little comfortable taking outside shots and they weren’t falling early.” Atlee, which had only four players from last year’s squad, may not have gotten comfortable, but it had the same problem getting inside. LaTanya Collins, the Raiders’ first-year head coach, called it a “learning experience.” “We have a lot of young
ladies – it is new to them,” Collins said. “They’re still learning the game, still learning fundamentals, still learning the system.” Both teams had their share of trouble controlling the ball, with turnovers rampant. Brooks said the Hawks and Raiders were aggressive on defense. “Any time Atlee and Hanover play each other,
there’s a lot of pride at stake,” Brooks said. “Both teams were playing hard. We were fortunate enough to get to a lot of loose balls and score enough to get a lead and hang on out there. I’m really pleased with our effort.” With a 30-point advantage at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Hawks could afford to relax somesee HAWKS, pg. 33 `

what. Atlee finally managed to outscore Hanover in the final minutes, 12-8. “We’re always going to play hard,” Collins said. “Effort, that’s the expectation. You can give that no matter what situation you’re in.” Brooks said the Hawks were hampered by the fact that two of his players were unavailable. “We’ve got 12 players on our roster. We had two sit out tonight,” Brooks said. “We’re like any team. We’re battling illness and injury. … We played some lineups that haven’t practiced very often together, but they’ve done a very good job in key game situations of understanding how to play. We’ve had good leadership and they’ve found a way to win.” Collins was pleased by the Raiders’ defensive effort. “I was very pleased by our pressure defense, more specifically, the top line of our pressure defense,” Collins said. “It caused [Hanover] to turn over the ball quite a few times, to
travel a few times.” Still, the Raiders have a lot of work to do. “One of the key things for us is becoming quick learners,” Collins said. “We made some mistakes tonight that we can’t afford to make the next game. That’s the unfortunate thing when you have a young team and you’re requiring them to play so early in their career. We can’t continue to make the same mistakes.” Atlee apparently learned something. The Raiders defeated Armstrong 5445 Thursday. Hanover, on the other hand, Hanover fell to Patrick Henry 59-47 Wednesday. Santana Moss, wide receiver for the Washington Redskins and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling came to Thomas Jefferson High School to help promote financial responsibility.
By Jim Ridolphi sports@mechlocal.com Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling said it’s never too early to learn financial responsibility, and he’s making sure every middle and high school student in Virginia has the tools to succeed. In conjunction with Visa, those schools will receive a copy of Financial Football, a program designed to give students the necessary tools to succeed in a challenging financial environment. Bolling joined Washington Redskin wide receiver Santana Moss last week at Thomas Jefferson High School to kick off the program. The event included a fun-filled session with the new game, with Bolling heading up one team and Moss leading another. Correct answers to financial questions allowed the teams to call plays and score points. Visa officials have initiated the program in 34 states in its seventh year of
the national effort. Moss took advantage of his only day off to make the two-hour drive from Washington, and said learning financial tools is valuable resource to ensure sound futures. The wide receiver said even the best advisors, like the ones available to NFL players, are sometimes wrong and it’s essential to have personal knowledge to ensure financial security. “Kids need to know how to make smart money management decisions early in life,” said Moss. “It takes the combined efforts of parents, teachers and mentors within the community to give teenagers a strong background in personal finance.” Visa said introducing the program in Virginia through the lieutenant governor’s office was a natural progression and good investment. “For over a decade, Visa has been committed to promoting financial literacy and we are proud to assist Lt. Gov.
Bolling in his efforts to strengthen financial education,” said Jason Alderman, senor director of Global Financial Education for Visa. Bolling endorsed the financial literacy campaign, and said he’s pleased Virginia’s students will now have additional tools to succeed. “Financial Football is a wonderful way to get students interested in personal finances and gives them a financial playbook they can use the rest of their lives,” he said. “This is a valuable program and a great partnership between my office, Visa and the NFL,” the lieutenant governor added. Moss couldn’t escape without answering questions regarding the Redskins and his outlook for the remainder of the season. The veteran said the team is focused and determined to improve each week. “We’re taking them one game at a time.”

Cadets’ depth fells fatigued Patriots Patrick Henry falls to Benedictine, 87-55 By Jim Ridolphi sports@mechlocal.com After two early season losses, the Benedictine Cadets are on a four-game win streak and seem to improve with each contest. Taking on visiting Patrick Henry at Coach Rutt Court last weekend, Benedictine got off to an early start and never looked back. Led by an explosive 34point performance by the Cadets’ VCU bound Jordan Burgess, Benedictine coasted to an 87-55 win over the Patriots. After falling to an early 11-4 deficit due to several turnovers caused by a pressing Cadet defense, the Patriots settled, and, with 3:45 remaining in the first half, they tied the game at 21-21. The Cadets responded with an offensive barrage of fast breaks that put them up 34-23 at intermission. The Patriots worked hard for every inbounds pass and basket, and the constant pressure seemed to take its toll as the third quarter began. The Patriots were playing their fifth game in a seven-day period, and the Cadets feature one of the deepest lineups in the area, often playing all 11
players during a game. “We kept running a lot of guys in there, playing 10 guys early. They saw new guy after new guy and it forced them to make some bad decisions,” Cadet coach Sean McAloon said. “At the end of the game, I think they were just a little tired.” McAloon said it’s a real luxury having enormous depth on the bench. Better yet, he said the level of play doesn’t deteriorate when he puts reserves on the floor. “We don’t have much of a fall off on defense, and, offensively, they create some baskets. It’s a real advantage for us to be able to play so many guys,” McAloon added. Patriot coach Randy Anderson concurred on the fatigue factor, but didn’t discount his team’s effort, led by R. Minor’s 20 points. “The guys gave every thing they had,” Anderson said. “Benedictine is a good aggressive team. I thought we played well in the first two periods, but just wore down the second half.” Nothing came easy for the Patriots, who rarely got second looks at the basket and contended with a full court press that forced numerous turnovers. Anderson said it’s a lesson well learned for the Patriots. “It’s good for us to play
teams with that level of physicality, because that’s where we want to be as a team,” Anderson said. “It gives us some things to work on going into the break like being more aggressive on defense.” Both teams still have remaining games before the break with Patrick Henry slated to play Glen Allen this week. The Cadets have a big matchup with Middleburg Academy today (Wednesday, Dec. 21) with a special presentation from the Virginia General Assembly honoring longtime Chaplain Father Adrian. Lee-Davis Holiday Classic nets big time win for Confederats By Dave Lawrence sports@mechlocal.com Last year, bad weather caused the cancellation of the Lee-Davis Holiday Classic wrestling tournament. But the two-year wait proved well worth it for the Confederates. Lee-Davis, led by three individual champions, handily

outscored second place finisher and Capital District rival Varina 205-117 to claim the tournament title. Deep Run (167 points), Jamestown (142 points) and Douglas Freeman (108.5 points) rounded out the top five teams. The Confederates domi-

nated the smaller weight classes: Chris Morris in the 106pound class, Sawyer Barksdale in the 120-pound class and Collin Van Allen in the 126pound class. Randy Loving of Lee-Davis finished second in the 170-pound class, falling in a 11-5 decision to Jamestown’s Sid Hall.
Despite the cleanup work ahead of him, Lee-Davis wrestling coach Josh Tyler said he felt good about the tournament win. “We were behind Varina for a little bit there,” Tyler said. “They were giving us a pretty good run for our money. The guys came back and we had
a great second day. The ones that had been bumped down to the consolations, I was very impressed with the way they battled back. A lot of times when you take that loss, some guys don’t recover from it. These guys stepped up and did what they needed to do to get the points we needed
to win.” Those who fared well for Lee-Davis in the consolation rounds were third-place finishers Chase Cordle in the 113-pound class, Reid Hues in the 132-pound class, Aaron Bolden in the 152-pound class, Jason Carter in the 195-pound see CONFEDERATES, pg. 35 `

class. Others who earned points for the Confederates included fifth-place finishers David Boyle (145 pounds) and Taylor Campbell (182 pounds). Morris, a freshman, got the Lee-Davis team off to a strong start in the championship round, winning a major decision over Dolan Walsh of Deep Run 14-3. “I just focused and did what I do normally,” Morris said. “I relaxed and used my speed … and my strength. If I didn’t have my strength, I wouldn’t have won this.” Sterling Myers, a senior at Highland Springs, defeated Lee-Davis’ Tyler Wooten (wrestling for the Bandits club) in a major decision, 196. Myers said he owed his victory to the power of positive thinking. “I just had to stay focused,” Myers said. “I kept telling myself to keep thinking positive, keep telling myself that I could do it and win. I went out there on the mat and showed it tonight.” Barksdale likewise won a major decision against his opponent, James Rivers’ Jeremy Randall. Barksdale defeated Randall 10-1. The junior did not let a split lip slow him down. “I have really thin lips, so when I get hit in the mouth, it just bleeds,” Barksdale said. “After the first day, you just get used to it.” Van Allen, a senior, said conditioning and footwork played a role in claiming his 11th win of the season with a 7-2 decision over Varina’s Jason Cecil. “You put in the time and the room in the off-season, and when you can win, it always feels good,” Van Allen said. “In the third, second period [Cecil] started to break and I kept pushing.”
Deep Run senior Rick Black managed a reversal late in the second round to even the score and assumed control late in the third round to claim a 9-6 decision over Monticello’s Ryan Brown for the 132-pound title. “My goal this year was to win a tournament,” Black said. “I’ve been pushing myself in practice and really working hard every day. … As I got to the end of the match I was getting tired. Things like that that I’ve been working toward the entire season helped me push myself past it.” Varina junior Daniel Dodd, who edged Monticello’s Forrest Thomson-Diggs 3-2 for the 138-pound title, said persistence paid off. “In the third period, you’ve got to keep wrestling. You can’t stop,” Dodd said. “Once you stop, they can turn you, or a mistake can decide the match.” Robert Winston, a senior at Henrico, needed overtime to defeat Varina’s Paul Gregory 6-4 in the 145-pound final. “We practice overtime takedowns all the time,” Winston said. “So I just had to go out there, have confidence in me and my footwork, and make sure I was going hard at it like I always should.” Melecio Silva, a senior at Varina, got the first pin of the championship round, taking down Henrico’s Muhmad Zakeel in 3:27 to claim the 152-pound title. He almost did not compete. “I got stitches the night before the tournament,” said Silva, who had been injured in practice. “But I just toughed it out and did good.” Deep Run’s Matt Lassiter defeated Varina’s Thomas Dodd in a 5-3 decision for the 160-pound championship. The senior said preparation paved the way for his victory. “I’d say just working hard in practice, that’s all it’s about,” Dodd said. “I just went out
there and wrestled aggressively the first two periods and just hung in there.” Hall said Loving was beating him early in the 170-pound match, but he managed some quick points in the middle of the match to take the lead. “It was a touch match. He was beating me pretty bad on my feet in the first period,” Hall, a senior, said. “I got a bit of a nice lap drop, then three points from the half, which was also good. It gave me a big lead, so I could relax a little in the third.” The Central and Colonial districts dominated the heaviest weight classes. Meadowbrook senior Jamaal Worsham got the second pin of the day, taking down Clover Hill’s Kyle Graves in 2:29 to win the 182-pound class. Zack Relford, a junior from Prince George, won the 195-pound title by pinning Jamestown’s Sam Kitson in 3:12. Meadowbrook senior Marcus Beckwith defeated Deep Run’s Eric Hess 12-5 for the 220-pound title. In the final match, Zach Siler, a senior from Douglas Freeman, pinned Deep Run’s Malik Yousef in 59 seconds to claim the 285-pound championship.

Local teen taking talents to Texas By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `
