Community makes wish for home makeover a reality By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com As the two buses moved to expose their house on Tammy Lane last Thursday evening, the Dwayne Doane family became overcome with emotion at what they saw. Dwayne, Chrissi and their three children, Shayna, D.J. and Alyssa returned from a MakeA-Wish Foundation-sponsored trip to Disney World to find their house had undergone an “extreme makeover” Mechanicsville-style. Ten-year-old Alyssa, who has cystic fibrosis, had been asking for the makeover. She and her family enjoy watching the “Extreme Makeover” television program. Since arrangements could not be made for Ty

Pennington and crew to handle the renovations, family, friends and neighbors joined forces to grant Alyssa’s wish. The Doanes were met by a crowd on Tammy Lane as the limousine pulled into the street. An ensemble band from Lee-Davis High School performed as well-wishers surrounded the family. Tears of joy were seen on many faces as the Doanes realized what had occurred while they were gone. Alyssa watched the events unfold seated atop her brother’s shoulders. A blessing was offered before they entered Melody Kinser to see how their house had been transformed. Alyssa Doane, atop her brother D.J.’s shoulders, was overcome with emotion when she and Christmas lights adorned the exterior and a tree her family realized the improvements family, friends and neighbors had made to their house on was located near a front window. The Mechanicsville Local

December 23, 2009

Thanks to the efforts of employees of EVB Windmill Branch, eight Mechanicsville families, with a total of 22 children, will enjoy a special Christmas morning. The project started with Patty Davis calling local elementary schools, asking counselors if they knew of any families the branch could sponsor this Christmas. As the calls came in, one family led to two, then three and up to six. Davis said it was difficult to hear the stories of the families and sponsor only one, so the bank staff agreed to sponsor all six — at first. The total number reached eight. School counselors contacted families for the children’s “wish list.” Names are anonymous. From 13 elementary children, the final number came in at 16 by including older siblings. Davis said “The outpouring and generosity have become so great that we were able to call another elementary school and sponsor two more families. The total number of children is now 22. What started as an idea and phone call ended up being a huge blessing to 22 Mechanicsville children and their families.” According to David, it was a team effort, with EVB being the starting point and

home base for the sponsorship; “the outpouring of generosity from our EVB customers and employees, local businesses, the elementary school counselors and even the involvement of non-EVB customers.” Donations included bicycles for the children who asked for them, a DVD player, a Wii system, and toys from one wall to the other. A local dental practice donated free dental work for all 22 children. One customer entered the bank and said, “Whatever is on the children’s wish list that has not been bought, I’m buying it.” And she did. Another customer donated food for all the families to have Christmas dinners. “I’m excited to help these children have a special Christmas. I wish I could see their faces,” Amanda Mantlo said. Davis said that being part of the team project “has been an honor and gift to me this holiday season.” Linda Franklin, branch manager at the bank, said “Thank you to all who participated in making this such a success.” The bank extended special thanks to: Boyle Dentistry offered free dental work, Best Buy for a Wii system, Mechanicsville Drug Store for Christmas dinners, Bruce’s Auto Parts for pop pick-n-pay, Ariel Tinsley, Walmart and Ukrop’s.

7 charged with credit card thefts Deputies find 6 from Florida, 1 from South Carolina with cash, ID, cards Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Seven people — six from Florida and one from South Carolina — recently were arrested by deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office in connection to possession of several stolen credit cards. According to Capt. Michael J. Trice, investigators have recovered $72,000 in cash, 13 forms of identification, and more than three dozen credit cards. The investigation began on Dec. 10 when the occupants

of two vehicles were seen by plainclothes investigators in the Mechanicsville Walmart parking lot changing the license plates on one of the vehicles. Both vehicles left Walmart in an attempt to elude the police. Deputies were able to stop one of the vehicles and detain Alisha Burns and Melody Dodd, but the occupants of the other vehicle ultimately fled on foot in the Brooks Hollow subdivision. After establishing a perimeter, deputies apprehended four of the five that fled from

the vehicle within a couple of hours. The fifth, Oscar Diaz, was apprehended the next morning in the nearby Spicewood neighborhood. Investigators have linked those arrested in thefts in 11 Virginia localities and seven thefts in South Carolina. Most of the thefts involved taking identification and banking information from vehicles and then utilizing that information to make large cash withdrawals from the victim’s bank

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

One local girl knows wishes can come true Getting photos of the Doane family when the reality of what the community had done to their home was rather difficult last Thursday. If there were many dry eyes on Tammy Lane, it would be surprising. Joy, surprise, overwhelmed — all these words could describe that moment. Alyssa, the youngest at 10, was sitting on her brother D.J.’s shoulders as the events unfolded. They had just returned from a Make-A-Wish Foundation-sponsored trip to Disney World near Orlando, Fla. Alyssa has cystic fibrosis. With the Doanes expected to arrive at 5 p.m., the street was lined with vehicles before 4:30 p.m. and those wanting to welcome them back filled their yard. Renee Courtney took time a couple of days before the Doanes returned to talk about the project — and what it meant to those working so diligently to have everything ready on Dec. 17. Throughout the interview, Renee spoke of God’s role and how — whatever their needs were — He provided. What started as “freshening up” Alyssa’s room became a full-fledged renovation, with the house getting a makeover. When the limo door opened and father Dwayne, mother Chrissi, sister Shayna, D.J. and Alyssa exited the vehicle, the looks on their faces were priceless. It’s a moment they will never forget — and neither will those who were fortunate enough to witness the generosity and kindness of a community. This is a wonderful example of giving as we celebrate Christmas -- and how lucky are we to have such people as neighbors. Wishes do come true — just ask Alyssa Doane.

Can you begin to imagine the thousands of dollars those piles represent once you factor in the cost of labor and materials? Now, please understand, I do not begrudge the folks working on Phase 2. I’m sure they all have families, and it is a tough economy, plus I’m sure they’re just following “orders from headquarters”, so to speak. What I’m really concerned about is “headquarters”, and particularly the people working there. Now, I don’t know if county money or state money is being dumped into this project, but I’m a citizen of both, and I’ve got to wonder why this project is being handled in this way. Why would you go to the trouble and expense to lay new roads and install new concrete curbs and medians only to tear them out a year later? Who exactly is in charge of this project? Is this our stimulus money at work? Couldn’t this project have been handled and coordinated in a more efficient and cost effective manner? Is anyone else annoyed by this? Anyway, I challenge whom-

early 19th century (c. 1810). It was bulldozed several weeks ago along with the adjacent Confederate trenches leading toward the creek to make way for a new subdivision of houses. This house appears on several maps in The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War in the heart of CS lines during the Battle of Totopotomoy Creek preceding the Battle of Cold Harbor. This house did not have any easements on it, making it vulnerable to the bulldozer, despite the fact that it was undoubtedly one of the headquarters for officers from North Carolina during this little battle (won by the Confederates). Many relics from North Carolina have been found in this area. 2) 19th century house burned to the ground recently and reported in the news. The fire department stated that this fire was set by an arsonist. 3) Mcghee’s (also called Sales) on Lee-Davis Road was recently razed by a developer. This historic home was built

probably in the 1830s and appears in The Old Houses of Hanover County, Virginia. It was the home for many years of Jack and Elizabeth Sale. Elizabeth taught at Lee-Davis High School for a long time. To my knowledge, there were no easements on the property, making it an easy target for a callous developer. It seems that the bulldozer crew confiscated only the mantels from the old house. 4) A few more houses in the county have been rescued from the bulldozer this year but probably only because they each had easements on them from the Department of Historic Resources. If you own a historic house, no matter how small and “insignificant,” you may be well advised to get in touch with this department of the state government to apply for an easement to protect it from developers and uneducated landowners in this sea of “Slow Growth” in the county. Final comment on dog’s death This has been a very difficult year for me. In July, I lost my dog, friend and companion, Hershey. I have struggled to come to terms with the circumstances surrounding her death. Speaking out publicly about it was painful but necessary. Hearing negative comments from those who speculated about the situation brought additional pain. But I’ve made it through the ordeal with the love and support of my fellow rescuers. I can now express gratitude and extend forgiveness. I want to extend the proverbial olive branch to the hard-working staff at Hanover Animal Control. As a rescuer, I understand the challenge of caring for unwanted and abandoned animals. I also know the heartbreak of accepting the reality that you can’t save them all. For more than 20 years, I have worked closely with that shelter and I hope that, in time,

Cold Harbor Family Medicine

I can rebuild our relationship. I thank them for the significant changes they made to prevent another incident like the one with Hershey. Animal control officers in the field now get immediate notice of a lost pet report. A second computer in the kennel area allows for prompt entry of info and easier access. The Web site is updated more often and now also shows found reports for an animal that is in the care of a finder until an owner can be located. The descriptions on the Web site are more generic so that owners won’t overlook an animal because it doesn’t seem to match their pets. I am also grateful for the low cost micro-chipping clinic held by the RSPCA which resulted in 600+ animals being microchipped. This means that there are 600 more that can be reunited with their owners should they become lost. I am most thankful for the years I had with Hershey. She was a constant in my life for 13 years and her absence has left a huge void. She loved to ride in the truck and sit on the pas-

senger side. If you didn’t notice that she was a dog, you’d think she was just another person riding along. She had a silly habit of carrying around her dog dish and bringing it to me to be filled at dinner time. Hershey will live on in my heart and memories. Her legacy will be positive change to save other animals. For a plain old mutt, that’s a lot. I will surely miss her this Christmas. Teresa Jordan Jacobsen Mechanicsville

Travellers Run residents: thanks Travellers Run would like to thank Del. Chris Peace and the local Ashland Virginia Department of Transportation office for their assistance in community maintenance within our neighborhood. After several attempts at requesting VDOT’s attention to ongoing pothole concerns and a line of sight issue, Del. Peace gladly stepped in to help expedite the process and the

repairs were completed within two weeks. Given the current budget constraints, we fully expected to be on the long list of areas requiring VDOT’s attention, but were pleasantly surprised with how quickly our local representative and VDOT worked together for a resolution. Del. Peace has consistently been a valuable resource for our neighborhood for issues both large and small, and we are truly grateful for his partnership within the community! ‘Make It and Take It’ a favorite at Atlee library By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com

hat started out as an outreach program to bring parents and children together has blossomed into a holiday “must-do” event at the Atlee branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library. “Make It and Take It,” a holiday ornaments program, is now in its fifth year. Debbie Matzganis, who is a library assistant at the Atlee location, said they saw a need to offer a project that would bring people “into the library to have an activity to do with a child, somebody else in their family. It’s sort of a parent/ child, aunt/child just sort of a get-together — a nice thing to do before the holidays.”

These participants, from left, Sydney Deringer, 7; Carter Salapka, 5; Katie Sarnowski, 7; Justin Sarnowski, 6; and Alex Sarnowski, 7, proudly display their creations, including candy canes, a necklace and a Santa Claus.

The classes met on Dec. 10 and 17 and attracted about 50 participants to each. “It is for the holiday time of year,” Matzganis said. This year they created a necklace, a

wreath and a candy cane. She said the class, which normally lasts about two hours, is leisurely, enabling the adults and children to enjoy their time together. “It’s just a good time for everybody,” she added. And, Matzganis said,

“Everything’s free, everything goes home. You take your little projects with you.” She has been involved since its inception and said “it’s a great joy.” Assisting with the program is Anna Showecker, who Matzganis calls her “craft

wizard.” She said Showecker “comes up with the craft ideas and she orders all the materials and gets everything ready. She packages everything and then all the staff here at Atlee chips in.” A wreath that was made this year included 3,000

squares of material, which the staff helped cut. “Everybody helped out,” Matzganis said. Due to its increasing popularity, the class has expanded to two sessions, with the first targeting students in grades kindergarten through fifth and the second for middle school and up. The preschool children are a staple at the library, with storytime and weekly crafts. Matzganis said the support of Friends of the Atlee Library has been instrumental in the program’s success. “They pay for all the materials that we use as well as the food that’s provided.” She praised the Friends organization, saying, “They do wonderful stuff and support everything the library does.” For more information on the library, visit www.pamunkeylibrary.org.

That equals a 22 percent drop in value. Also in that article the county assessor, John Nelms Jr., stated that it was the “less expensive” property that was selling. While the “less expensive” property may be selling, it has also taken a hit in this distressed market. For example, in my subdivision, a house sold this past June for $170,000 which was almost 18 percent less than its 2009 assessed value of $206,800. But get this . . . In 2008 that same property’s assessed value was $178,200, which was still higher than what it sold for this year; however, in January 2009, the county assessor (who lives in Richmond) raised the value on that property to $206,800 even while knowing that we were in a depressed market. The house was not worth the 2008 assessed value, much less the assessment increase put on it this year by the county. The owner got a bum deal because he had to pay higher taxes this year based on an inflated assessed value. Remember this example (I could give you more) and ask yourself if you could sell your house in this day and time for what the county assessor thinks it’s worth. Obviously my neighbors couldn’t, but I’m also sure there are exceptions. Around the first of January we are all going to get notices telling us what the county assessor thinks our property is worth. Even if your property assessment stays the same — or goes up — in that notice, you should seriously think about “appealing” your reassessment. You have that right and it’s free. Also, look online on the “Assessor’s” page on the county’s Web site at the parcels that he is going to lower for

2010. Compare your house’s assessed value to others of like value and see if you think you’re getting the shaft from the county. What your house is assessed for has a direct bearing on how deep you will have to reach down into your pockets to pay real estate taxes next year. There are over 44,000 parcels in Hanover and only 10,500 (about 23 percent) are even changing. Some will be going up in value and some will be going down, but 34,000 values will be staying the same. How can this be? BJ Ostergren Mechanicsville

Breaking laws for new ones The Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board recently rushed through the approval of significant changes to the proposed stormwater management regulations within just days of receiving radically new data from the EPA regarding Virginia’s water quality, which turned out to be better than anyone had been led to believe to-date. Whether or not one agrees with the regulation changes themselves, state law calls for proper public notice of major regulatory change so that citizens have an opportunity to weigh in with comments and concerns. The board chose to manipulate one of the most simple laws to understand and interpreted it in a manner so as to justify pushing the regulation changes through before the end of the year, and the end of a term. No matter how important one perceives a matter to be, ignoring or manipulating state law to advance the matter is simply unacceptable, especially by those who are allowed to be in the position of passing new ones. Therefore, I believe that the see LETTERS, pg. 15 `

Rain didn’t keep Station 7 away It is Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, and it’s 40 degrees with a cold rain falling. No matter, thanks to Station 7 in Mechanicsville, Santa just arrived at our culde-sac on a huge shining ladder truck! This scenario has taken place for as long as I can remember and I’m no spring chicken! Every year, the week after the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade, the wonderful firefighters and Santa ride through Mechanicsville waving at the families that they have cared for all year. For the past few years, I’ve been fearful that budget cuts would not let this event take place, but each year I am able to stand on my porch and wave to that jolly elf as he laughs and waves at all of us. This year I am especially happy that he braved the rain and cold to make his journey to our neighborhood. I’m going off to work with a smile on my face, once again! Thank you Station 7 (and all the other Hanover fire stations that participate in this wonderful tradition) for letting the tradition continue! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! Responding to PETA points In response to Alisa Mullins’ (research specialist, PETA) opinion letter on Wednesday,

Dec. 9, 2009, I would like to make four comments. First, I completely agree with her observation that the death of Jessica Goode in a shooting accident was tragic and avoidable. I avoid calling this a hunting accident based on the points made by Mullins: “the man who killed Jessica did not have a hunting license, had not taken a hunter safety course and was trespassing”. The individual in question was a poacher who broke at least four laws by my count, not a hunter, and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I would like to thank Mullins for providing a timely reminder that safety and sportsmanship should be at the forefront of our minds as we head to the field this fall. Secondly, I take exception to Mullins’ poorly constructed argument casting all hunters in the same careless light as the shooter of Goode. She quotes several safety statistics with no source reference or background. With a little research, I tied the nine Virginia hunting deaths in 2008-2009 to a Virginia Pilot article that cited the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) as the source. While nine hunting related deaths is totally unacceptable, I will point out that there are approximately 300,000 licensed hunters in the Commonwealth of Virginia according to VDGIF figures, resulting in an annual death rate of .003 percent. A fact excluded in the opinion letter was that five of the nine deaths resulted from self-inflicted wounds, reducing the risk of death to .001 percent, as death is completely avoidable by following the primary rule of gun safety: “Ensure your firearm is pointed in a safe direction at all times”. My experience from 33 years of hunting is that the vast majority of hunters are extremely safety conscious, but what would I know about firearms safety compared to Mullins’ vast experience?

My next point of contention is Mullins’ quick departure from firearms safety to likening Goode’s death and the death of others to the harvest of game animals. Sadly, my rebuttal to Mullins statement, “A lot of suffering could be prevented if we stopped putting hunters’ entertainment ahead of the safety

of people and the welfare of wildlife and started seriously exploring and implementing humane methods of wildlife management that, unlike sport hunting, actually work”, will be lost on some. I am surprised that Mullins did not count the

taking care of us.” “We went in there to only do things that would give Alyssa a better quality of life and God has provided us with far more than we ever asked for — far more,” Renee said. Volunteers entered the trilevel house and proceeded to pull up the carpet and install ceramic tile, which was donated. Hardwood floors on two levels were refinished and a set of French doors replaced a window. New furniture also was brought to the house. As for the number of volunteers, “God has just put people there,” Renee said. Before heading to Orlando, Alyssa had been hospitalized through Thanksgiving. “This is a normal thing for a child with cystic fibrosis.” The Monday after Thanksgiving, Dwayne was admitted to the hospital for an appendectomy. Then his truck broke down. “We’re getting that fixed, parts are being donated.” A vehicle belonging to Shayna, 17, broke down on Thanksgiving day. When the family left on Dec. 10, the community project kicked into full gear. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, neighbor and family friend Renee Courtney talked about what was taking place at the house. “We probably have now gotten probably close to 200 people if not more — and we’ve had probably a rotation of 200 people through that house. So many people have been involved.” Whether it’s moving furniture out, painting, or connecting computer equipment, there’s been a task for everyone who volunteered. A heavy presence came from Lee-Davis High School, where Dwayne assists with the junior varsity football team. He also has coached Mechanicsville Rebel football. “There have been Lee-Davis students there every day working — not just football team members, but other students who have heard about it.” Renee said some had been working from the morning to the evening, “painting, just whatever we say.”

Principal Michael Bishop presented the family with a check for $1,000 to help with Christmas shopping. Renee’s attachment to Alyssa is obvious. “She’s one of these special children that just takes your heart and she holds it and you can’t help but to love her, and they’re just an awesome family.” Before they headed to Florida, “Chrissi had asked a few of us while they were gone to Disney if we could come in and freshen up Alyssa’s room with fresh paint, just kind of freshen it up a little bit..” Penny Pope, whose 14-yearold daughter Amanda also has cystic fibrosis, contacted Renee and asked her if she wanted to help with the project. Tanya Moody of JNT Contractors joined and the three started brainstorming. “All that is being done is not because of the three of us it is strictly because of the community; it is because of God,” Renee said. “God has done so much — we don’t even have to voice something we want to do for them. It is very obvious. Several of us have said we would not have been as far as we are if it had not been God

house received some form of improvement. “There is not room that has not been touched.” Contractor James Bowles was in charge of “running the show,” Renee said. “He has gotten donations as well, but whenever he came and looked at the house and we said we want the things that will help Alyssa breathe better he stepped outside and he looked at the garage and said ‘What about dad’s shop?’ ” When he was told money was available for that, he told them not to worry about it. Dwayne’s garage now has siding. “You would not believe the outpouring of donations, not only materials, but moneywise,” Renee said. “It’s just been phenomenal.” Among those helping with the project were: James E. five self-inflicted deaths as a positive since these individuals were engaged in hunting, which may have resulted in the end of an animal’s life. My point is that if folks cannot distinguish the difference between a human life and that of an animal we are in far greater peril than that espoused by Mullins. Also, every game animal I have seen harvested was consumed by the hunter and his family or given to Hunters for the Hungry (http://h4hungry. org/) to feed the needy in our community. In my mind, the harvest and consumption of a renewable resource is in line with the nature order of the world, which brings me to my

final observation on this point. Game animals are a renewable natural resource belonging to the citizens of Virginia. The right of the people to hunt, fish and harvest game was voted on and adopted as an amendment to the Virginia Constitution, and embraced as a viable, longterm management method by VDGIF biologists. What qualifications and authority does Mullins possess to contradict these positions? I noted she did not expand on “humane management practices that really work despite her admitted need to explore them. Some folks have not made this connection, but the proposed PETA management practices will lead to farmers shooting and leaving deer in the field to protect their crops in an effort to deliver

Mullins’ vegan diet. One needs to think past the next step he/ she is attempting to take. Lastly, I have noted a spike in the number of PETA opinion letters in The Local lately. So I understand where we stand, I would like to know The Local’s position and the position of the editorial staff on PETA and/ or the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which is an anti-hunting organization that does not own/operate one animal shelter, despite a common misconception that they are the supporting organization behind local shelters. In asking, I simply want to know who and what I am up against when something I hold dear comes under attack. Kent Kruse Mechanicsville

Abiding in the Fields By Pastor David Crisp, Senior Pastor Note to readers: in my next article appearing the first week of January, I will make my predictions for 2010, but for now enjoy a brief re-telling of an event that happened 2010 years ago, an event that changed everything for everyone! MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Submitted photo

With 250 to 300 motorcyclists taking part, Cox Transportation Services Inc. in Ashland once again joined in the annual Wreaths Across America program on Dec. 12.

Wreaths pay tribute to fallen soldiers Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com On Saturday, Dec. 12, between 250 and 300 motorcyclists gathered in the cold once again at Cox Transportation Services Inc. in Ashland to participate in the annual Wreaths Across America program. After gathering for coffee and donuts, followed by some pre-ride instructions and a special prayer for the fallen soldiers and their families, the riders pulled out behind Cox’s special “America Supports You” patriotic trailer, which was loaded with wreaths to be laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Richmond National Cemetery.

The Wreaths Across America event is held at national cemeteries around the world to honor the men and women who have fought for the protection and benefit of all. The convoy was escorted by multi-jurisdictional police escorts throughout the procession. After a wreath was dropped off at the Virginia War Memorial and City Hall, the truck and bikers, along with many other visitors, gathered at Richmond National Cemetery for the ceremony. The ceremony included speeches, poems and songs that saluted the ultimate sacrifice made by the fallen. Bagpipes and the playing of “Taps” were included in the

program, which climaxed with the laying of the wreaths at the gravesites by the bikers, ROTC students and other volunteers. “Having the privilege to participate in this worthwhile program once again is truly an honor for our company,” Jay

Smith, Cox Transportation Services president, said. “We are so fortunate to live in a nation free of tyranny and oppression as a result of the sacrifices veterans and fallen soldiers have made. It is something that all of us should remember.”

I

t was cold that night and unusually bright. Grandpa and I lay on the ground near the gate looking intently into the night sky at a star that neither he nor I had ever noticed before. Strange! Grandpa had gazed at the stars for many years, first as a boy himself, then with my dad and now with me, but always taking care of the sheep. Could it be that a brand new star had appeared - a star that even Grandpa had never seen? The sheep seemed restless, stirring around. The mamma ewes sniffed their babies and nuzzled them close. Then suddenly a bright light shone all around us. I was frozen scared. I jumped to my feet clutching my staff. Then I saw it… I mean… him.

H

e was clothed in a brightly shining robe. It was, well, it was… an angel, and he said “Do not be afraid.” I heard the Rabbi tell a story once of an angel that appeared to Gideon, and every spring Daddy reads us the story of the Passover Angel, but I never thought I would ever see one. And not just one! There were thousands of them that appeared singing praises to God. They said a baby had been born and that “Peace” was on the earth. Grandpa says “peace” will come from this child because the Angel told him the child was “a Savior” and that he was “Christ the Lord.” Many a night Grandpa had told me that the Christ, the Messiah, would come and rescue us, a Deliverer greater than Moses would appear. And now He has been born! So we are going into Bethlehem as fast as we can to find this child.

M

y heart is beating so loud I think it’s going to come out of my chest! After seeing the angels and hearing their voices, it’s hard to imagine something more exciting than that! But, I know that the world is going to be different because of this child. Somehow I know that my life is never going to be the same, that meeting the Savior will be the biggest, most important moment of my life. And not just for me. The most important thing anybody will ever do is meet the Messiah. I sure hope people figure that out.

Collecting for the Food Bank

Amy Fling’s fourth-grade class coordinated efforts throughout Atlee Christian Academy in collecting 770 pounds of non-perishable items for the Central Virginia Food Bank.

Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Thanks to the Hanover Senior Travel Commission and Hanover County Parks & Recreation, Hanover County seniors will be traveling to Fredericksburg in February to attend a performance of “Little Shop of Horrors.” On Feb. 17, the production, described as “charming, tuneful and hilarious (and firmly tongue-in-cheek),” will be presented at the Riverside Center Dinner Theatre. The affectionate sci-fi movie spoof became one of OffBroadway’s longest running musicals and achieved household-name status in its film version. A down-and-out skid row floral assistant discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered Rhythm and Blues singing carnivore who offers shy florist Seymour fame and fortune in exchange for frequent (human)

feedings, finally revealing itself as an alien creature bent on global domination. Musical favorites include “Grow for Me,” “Call Back in the Morning,” “Suppertime,” “The Meek Shall Inherit” and “Don’t Feed the Plants.” The cost is $91 per person and payment is due by Jan. 29. The price includes roundtrip motorcoach transportasee SENIORS, pg. 26 `

Role reversal: caring for aging parents Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The catch phrase says it all. Adult children who are caring for their parents while also raising their own family are known as “the sandwich generation.” These caregivers find themselves pulled in many directions — caring for a parent, raising their children, keeping their marriage healthy and often holding down a job as well. On top of all this, adult caregivers are thrust into the awkward and often unwanted position of feeling like they’re parenting their own parents. “It can be unsettling to find yourself in this role,” said James Seaton, owner of Visiting Angels Senior Homecare along with his daughter, Marie Olsen. He said this reversal in

the parenting role can give rise to stress for both parents and caregivers. A recent survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) found that an estimated 22.4 million U.S. households — nearly one in four are providing care to someone age 50 or older or have provided care during the previous 12 months. As these caregivers have discovered, it takes a lot of time, energy and patience to care for an aging loved one, and often it can seem like all of these attributes are in short supply. It’s not surprising then that guilt coupled with resentment are prevalent emotions among caregivers. “Caregivers’ lives have been turned upside down,”

at Hanover Tavern By William Inge Now through JANUARY 10 at Hanover Tavern

said Olsen. “Despite the fact that they love their parents, caring for a parent is a big responsibility that affects the whole family.” Plans for the immediate future go out the window. Schedules that were already jam-packed and complicated need to be reworked. Children may resent the new demands on their parents’ time and attention. With all these added stressors, experts emphasize the importance of caretakers looking after their own physical and emotional health. “You can’t take care of someone else without taking care of yourself first,” Olsen said. This involves getting help from others, whether it be from siblings, a support group or a health care service. Martha Chandler of Mechanicsville found herself in this situation with her mother, Della Garrison. “It was impossible for me to cook three meals a day, work full time, raise a child

and keep two houses clean. It was killing me. I would worry about mom all day. Getting Visiting Angels to help me has given me the peace of mind I needed. Sheila comes for five hours a day and prepares all mom’s meals, cleans, does her laundry, takes her to doctors’ appointments, errands, shopping, go for walks and has even taken her dog to the vet. She and mom have become true companions and really enjoy each other’s company.” In understanding that need, the staff at Visiting Angels provides non-medical caregivers who go into clients’ homes to offer companionship, hygiene assistance, do light housekeeping, remind to take medications, run errands, prepare meals or do shopping — all services that can provide a respite for families dealing with the care of a loved one. “You can be confident that your caregiver is qualified and has excellent references,” said Seaton.

Submitted photo

Visiting Angels caregiver Sheila Jackson, right, works with Della Garrison through the program.

He said the company only hires experienced caregivers who pass a rigorous screening process. He also said they look for intangible traits such as a caring personality. Many of their caregivers are former hospital staffers looking for the opportunity to do one-onone personal care. “We work with each family to develop an individualized program to manage the daily needs of the client and then match those needs to the best

possible caregiver,” Seaton added. He said the family is then given the opportunity to meet the caregiver before care begins. Once the caregiver has been placed in the home, Visiting Angels continues its personalized contact through telephone check-ins and home visits to make sure the match is a good one. For more information about Visiting Angels, call Olsen at 804-353-0000.

JSRCC raises $15 million in state’s largest community college campaign The J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Educational Foundation has reached a $15 million milestone through the Campaign for Reynolds to increase access to education and provide the next generation of skilled workers for businesses in Richmond. Reynolds made a public promise in November 2007 that as a college it was ready to deepen its

28

impact and broaden its role in the community. To date, nearly $16 million has been raised — the largest campaign in Virginia community college history. The following educational initiatives show community impact in Richmond, as a result of the campaign, and a return on investment for more than 1,000 contributors:

The Mechanicsville Local

December 23, 2009

-- Increased access to scholarships by raising $3.6 million for individuals, with an average award of $1,300, to level the playing field for students limited by financial circumstance. -- Over $2.75 million in support is helping to build a Workforce Training Center on the Parham Road Campus. CCWA serves more than 23,000 individuals who represent over 1,100 employers in

Central Virginia. -- More than $2 million is raising the standard of living for local at-risk youth through Reynolds’ Middle College Program.-Another $1.5 million will expand the nursing and allied healthcare programs at the college to meet the community’s pressing need for more allied health workers on whom Richmonders can depend to provide care for their families.

-- Nearly $500,000 helped create an Urban Teachers Institute at Reynolds, in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University. -- Reynolds is one of two community colleges nationally selected to receive a $720,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop an Advanced Electric Drive Vehicle

Career Studies Certificate. This allows the college to train students to repair electric, plug-in hybrid electric and fuel cell electric vehicles. These funds are helping Reynolds become a leader in an ever-growing green initiative that is creating a culture of environmental responsibility across the state.

Former Lee-Davis player Scott takes over at UR Miller recognizes ability though new hire hasn’t been coordinator By John O’Connor Media General News Services University of Richmond Athletic Director Jim Miller called Dave Clawson a few days ago. The subject: Latrell Scott, whom Miller was considering as the Spiders’ football coach. Clawson, UR’s coach during 2004-07 and now Bowling Green’s coach, acknowledged the conventional wisdom that Scott, 34, was probably a couple of years away from having the background expected of a head coaching candidate. But Clawson, for whom Scott worked at Richmond, also made a point that Miller noted. “In two years, you’re not going to be able to get him as a head coach,” Clawson told Miller. “If you wait, he may not be available.” Miller did not wait. UR named Scott its coach yesterday after an eight-day search that began with Mike London accepting the University of Virginia job vacated by Al Groh. Miller met with Scott, a Virginia assistant this season, over the weekend. Scott, a graduate of LeePhoto courtesy of the University of Richmond Davis High School, never has Last Tuesday, Latrell Scott, left, was welcomed to the University of Richmond coaching staff by Athletic Director Jim Miller. The 34-year-old Scott, a 1993 graduate of Lee-Davis High School, was named head coach of the Spiders program becoming the youngest head coach in Division I football. see SCOTT, pg. 35 `

Atlee leads locals in familiar gymnastics role By Jim Ridolphi sports@mechlocal.com When Lee-Davis, Hanover and Atlee get together for a gymnastics meet, it’s more like a reunion than a competition. Many of the girls train at the same gyms year round, and others are close neighbors with their competitors. Last week’s home meet for Lee-Davis at Stonewall Jackson Middle School was no exception to the rule and the focus was fun as the early season competition started. “I told the girls to just go out there and have a good time and that’s what they did,” said Hanover coach Jessica Moore. “As long as they enjoy the competition, it’s a victory,” she added. That familiarity also means the competitors know the top performers and for the past years Atlee’s had its share of championships. Raider coach Donna Koehler hopes this year continues that tradition. “It’s still early in the season and we had a couple of girls out sick tonight, but I was proud of the girls’ performance,” Koehler said after her team captured the win with 133.93 points. “We have a dynamic team this year with six strong all-arounds and a total of 14 girls on the team,” she added. Lee-Davis finished a close second with 124.95 points and Hanover was in the hunt with 108.34. “We are steadily improving and need to focus on adding a few elements to routines and cleaning up our routinesespecially at the end of the routine,” said Confederate coach Cy Witherow. The Confederates’ Hannah Chenault took first place on the bars with a score of 9.00. Raider junior Jessica Nunnally captured first place

in the beam and vault competitions, and is one of several returning starters for Atlee. “She’s a strong all around performer for us and I was proud of her performance tonight,” Koehler said. Nunnally also captured best all-around for the meet with 34.80 points. Atlee junior Cameron Overstreet captured the floor exercise crown with a 9.00 performance. “She’s our team’s co captain along with Jamie McKay so we really count on them,” Koehler said. “Cameron has a busy schedule this time of year with pole

vaulting, exams and studying but she handles it well,” the coach added. Koehler said the experience is paying off for her team with more than just points. “We have excellent leadership on our team with the returning girls. Jaimee MacKay is our only senior and she’s our leader, but we’re fortunate to have the top four girls returning.” Hanover’s team, comprised of a mixture of academic class levels, is steadily improving and several Hawk competitors see GYMNASTICS, pg. 34 `

Former Hanover High School volleyball standout Kristin Carpenter became a part of athletics history this past week when her Penn State Nittany Lions won their third consecutive NCAA volleyball championship. Penn State made a remarkable comeback to defeat Texas 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-13). The Nittany Lions finished the match with 61 kills on .234 hitting, while Texas had 71

kills with a .251 attack percentage. Penn State posted 57 assists, four aces, 80 digs and 14.0 total team blocks. Texas finished the night with 67 assists, five aces, 81 digs and 12.0 team blocks. Carpenter, a freshman with the Nittany Lions, played briefly in the national championship match. With the win, Penn State continues on their current winning streak that has reached 102 consecutive victories.

UR’s priority: ability over age Richmond’s new football coach is the youngest in D1 By John O’Connor Media General News Services Former University of Richmond two-sport star Brian Jordan attended the introduction of Spiders football coach Latrell Scott last Tuesday afternoon. During his remarks, Scott acknowledged Jordan, who played football and baseball at UR during the mid- ’80s. Scott recalled that “as a kid,” he watched Jordan as a Spider. Laughter filled the Robins Center lobby. Scott unintentionally reminded the crowd how young he is (34). He graduated from Lee-Davis High School in 1993, and is the youngest head football coach in Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision). Rather than Scott’s age, “We looked at his experience,” UR Athletic Director Jim Miller said. Scott has been a college assistant for nine years, with two of those years at the NCAA’s highest level (2008 at Tennessee, this season at Virginia). Previously, he was a member of the UR staff of Dave Clawson (2005-07). Scott has no coordinator’s experience. Miller said he views the head coach’s role as leading the program and “coaching the coaches,” two areas in which he believes Scott will shine. Mac McConnell agrees. He coached Scott at Lee-Davis and has been an assistant at Randolph-Macon College for six years. “He’s been around. He gets along well with everybody,” McConnell said of Scott. “I’ve

always heard good things about Latrell from other coaches that I run into, some of the high school coaches who he calls on. They always say how professional he is.” Scott was 6-4 and 200 pounds as a senior receiver at Lee-Davis. He was named All-Metro, spent a year at Fork Union Military Academy, and at Hampton University was tried at safety and outside linebacker before settling at tight end. After leaving HU, Scott started coaching, first at FUMA. “Playing football and basketball, he was very levelheaded, never got too excited,” said Joe Elrod, a former L-D and UR quarterback who was an L-D senior when Scott was a junior. “Really, looking back, he was kind of like the second quarterback on the field. I could see [Scott becoming a coach]. This doesn’t surprise me.” But at one of the elite FCS programs, at age 34? In April 2002, Miller sought a basketball coach to succeed John Beilein, who had moved to West Virginia. As the search progressed, Miller met with UR guard Reggie Brown, and asked if Brown would prefer a man with head-coaching experience, or a young assistant without it. Brown replied that

he liked the idea of a young assistant to whom the players could relate. Miller then asked Brown, “If you have an appendicitis, who would you rather have as a doctor, a guy who’s done hundreds of appendectomies, or someone fresh out of med

been an offensive or defensive coordinator, which bothered Miller less than it would have several years ago. “I think we’re on the cutting edge of that, on the front side, of having more coaches who specialize in being the CEO of the program,” Miller said. Scott said, “Sometimes you just don’t have the opportunity to be a coordinator because of where you are. But I’ve been experiencing game-planning, experiencing managing games, and doing those things. We’ll be fine. “It’s a dream come true, and I accept the challenge.” Of the many factors Miller considered, continuity was among the highest priorities, he said. “We have a good football program and what we need to focus on is continuity,” Miller said. “How can we keep this thing going like we have?” Scott worked at UR from 2005 through 2007 and recruit-

school?” Miller hired Jerry Wainwright, who at the time was 55 and the head coach at UNC Wilmington. Overall, Wainwright’s stay at UR was not distinguished. Miller went the other way in January 2008, hiring Mike London as UR’s football coach. London had no headcoaching experience, but guided Richmond to the 2008 FCS national championship and the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association championship before moving to Virginia. Veteran coordinators were high priorities for London, and also will be for Scott. He

met with the Spiders’ assistants who did not accompany London to Virginia. Vic Shealy, UR’s defensive coordinator this season, said that his future is unknown. Scott is believed to be interested in bringing Wayne Lineburg back as Richmond’s offensive coordinator. Lineburg left UR in 2006, and spent the past three seasons on the Virginia staff. Mike Faragalli, the Spiders’ offensive coordinator the past two seasons, went with London to U.Va.

ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Head Men’s Basketball Coach Nathan Davis announced last Wednesday that senior David Carlson has left the team after a mutual agreement to part ways. Davis and Randolph-Macon wish Carlson all the best in his future endeavors. Carlson played in all eight games this season for the Yellow Jackets, averaging 22.8 minutes per game and was the team’s second leading scorer at 12.5 points per game. Lots of times, there have been people who have played in games and been to games down at [UR] Stadium, but they’ve never seen Richmond’s campus.” Clawson was 36 when he became Richmond’s coach in 2004. London was 47 when he became Richmond’s coach in 2008. “You’re getting a guy who’s young, but he’s organized, he can represent your school well,” said John Shuman, the coach of the postgraduate program at

Fork Union Military Academy, where Scott played and coached. “I think it’s a home run.” Scott’s staff has not been formalized. Former UR offensive coordinator Wayne Lineburg, who was with Scott at Richmond and Virginia, may rejoin him with the Spiders. “Obviously, there are decisions that we have to make and we’re going to do the best we can do to put together the best possible staff to continue what’s going on here at Richmond,” Scott said. Fourteen prospects in the Class of 2010 orally committed to UR while London was the coach. Scott said one of his first acts as Richmond’s coach would be to contact or visit those players. Prospects cannot sign binding letters of intent until February. UR was also interested in Kevin Higgins, The Citadel’s head coach, and Pete Lembo, Elon’s head coach, according to those coaches. Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas Mom & Dad. Though you’re not with us, I am glad that you’re in heaven where it all began. God sent His only son to save this land. As we celebrate His birthday here, I feel your spirit very near. I know we’ll meet again one day. So just once more I’d like to say, “Merry Christmas with all my love. I’m sending you a kiss by a turtle dove. I know you’ll catch it, for I believe you’re in heaven with Jesus watching over me!” Love, Janice In memory of Evelyn and Scotty, beloved parents of Janice Scott Goodman, Raymond Scott and Pamela Salgado.
