Oticon recognizes no limits attitude By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com When Kristin Grasberger learned she had won the Oticon Focus on People Award in November, she had a plan for the $1,000 gift designated for her personal use: She gave it away. The James Madison University freshman is humble when talking about her generosity. As an Oticon recipient, she received a total of $2,000 — $1,000 is sent to a nonprofit of choice, while the other $1,000 was given to her. Saying “I have everything I need,” Kristin chose to split the $1,000, with Peer Lauitsen, president of Oticon Inc., presented Kristin Grasberger with her award.

She said Young Life Capernaum is “a young life program for kids with disabilities.” The program “has been a big part of my life the past few years,” she said. She became interested in El Salvador after reading “profiles of children from all the world” on the Web site, www.compassion.com. “You can choose who to sponsor for however long you’d like.” Kristin selected a girl. Her $500 contribution “is slightly more than enough to sponsor her for see ATTITUDE, pg. 20 `

Ax attack top story of 2009 By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com

An ax attack, political changes, and budgetary woes top the list of news in Hanover County for 2009.

1 — Ax attack Sixteen-year-old Omar K. Abdelaal has been accused of assaulting another local teen with an ax following an altercation at a Mechanicsville business. The Oct. 23 incident left the 15-year-old victim with a laceration to the left side of his face. Deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office charged Abdelaal with aggravated malicious wounding. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 20 years to life. Commonwealth Attorney R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III was successful in having the case moved to Circuit Court, meaning Abdelaal will be tried as an adult. Chalkley said the attack, which occurred at Tractor Supply Co. in the 7000 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike, was

2 — Elections Republicans proved victorious in June and November, with Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli preparing for next month’s transition. McDonnell defeated Creigh Deeds in the race for governor; Bolling returns as lieutenant governor after besting Jody Wagner; and Cuccinelli beat Steve Shannon for the attorney general’s seat. Bolling is a Mechanicsville resident.
The 55th District House of Delegates will be represented by a new face when the General Assembly convenes in a couple of weeks. John Cox won the Republican party’s nomination in the primary, fighting off Rusty McGuire and Jerry Burch. “A business guy and a novice politician,” Cox said “I felt like my conservative message resonated with the voters” after the primary victory. He joined with Republicans in the general election with an confident win over
Democrat Robert Barnette. Del. Chris Peace, R-97, ran unopposed in the general election.
3 — Stimulus funds With stimulus funds pouring into the coffers of the Hanover County Public Schools, fulltime regular and special education teachers were saved from the unemployment line. Dr. Stewart D. Hanover Foils, a newly formed venture developed by former Reynolds Packaging employees, has located its new production facility in Ashland. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, Dec. 21, company president Howard Hager announced that they will begin production of packaging products in the new 80,000-square-foot facility next year. A unique venture for the region, Hanover Foils was conceived and started by former Reynolds Packaging employees who will provide the services and products needed by the customers of their former company, which closed last year. “We saw a void that needed to be filled and some of the best and brightest people that needed jobs,” Hager said. “It was the perfect storm for a great business opportunity.” Hager said that when Reynolds Packaging closed, many customers were left with nowhere to go for the products that Reynolds had supplied for years. “We saw a way to use our extensive knowledge base of employees, who have anywhere from 15 to 40 or more years of experience, to provide quality products and service at the highest levels,” he said. “Our smaller operation also allows us to
focus on the needs of our customers and to pay attention to detail, which is something that is much more difficult to do in a larger organization.” Hanover Foils will produce many packaging products used in a wide range of familiar products, from wine skirting to insulation, and yogurt lidding to blister foils used to package medications A unique venture for the region, Hanover Foils was conceived and started by former Reynolds Packaging employees who will provide the services and products needed by the customers of their former company, which closed last year.
and gum. Employees are in the process of installing state-of-the-art equipment for production of packaging materials in the company’s home at 301 Hill Carter Parkway in Ashland. The initial product will be foil packaging, primarily for the Confection, Industrial, and Pharmaceutical markets. Future plans include the installation of “clean rooms” for the production of pharmaceutical use packaging. The company’s primary focus will be
on product engineering and manufacturing processes, ensuring the highest quality and the most efficient manufacturing process possible while providing superior service. “This is a top-quality environment for Hanover Foils to grow their business,” said Ed Via, vice chairman of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and the Ashland District’s representative on the board. “The Ashland area is perfectly situated along I-95 and we are a business-friendly county. The company’s name reflects the strong, rich history of Hanover County. We welcome this company and look forward to partnering with them to ensure their long-term success as one of our valued corporate citizens.” “The founding of this fine company in Ashland is a win-win event for the town, Hanover County, the Richmond Region and the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Ashland Mayor Faye Prichard. “Hanover Foils was born from the quality and expertise that was developed in a former Richmond corporate giant, Reynolds, and the ability of the employees to continue to work together to develop quality packaging solutions is a tribute to the business and entrepreneurial climate in our region. This is a very exciting development.” For more information about Hanover Foils, visit http://hanoverfoils.com

Regional jail ‘adopts’ families for holiday Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com For the eighth straight year, the staff of the Pamunkey Regional Jail have continued the spirit of giving back to the community. This year the jail staff exceeded previous year’s contributions, which consisted of toys, monetary donations and holiday meals. “Despite the tough economic times, the jail officers and staff really came through this year,” Col. James C. Willett, CJM, CCM, the jail’s superintendent, said. “I think it is a testament to the nature of our staff that they would continue to give such tremendous support to this program that helps those less fortunate
than themselves.” In addition to the typical gift donations from staff, this year the jail staff operated several fundraisers, including yard sales and gift wrapping. The jail staff also are very appreciative of the generous contributions from the following local businesses which provided donations to the program: Wal-Mart, BJ’s, Sam’s Club, Target, Kroger and Costco. The Adopt-A-Family Program is just one part of a continuing effort by the Pamunkey Regional Jail to reach out to the citizens and communities that it serves and help affect a positive perception of the jail and its staff. OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
A new decade is upon us again As we age, the words “time flies” seem to become more relevant. Case in point: The realization of 2010 arriving when the ball drops in New York City at midnight Jan. 1. While the celebrations are many, and sometimes extreme, there’s a unique joy in welcoming a new year. Last Wednesday night, thoughts turned to this time in 1999. The impending arrival of the new millennium stirred excitement and anticipation — as well as fear and foreboding. Y2K. That term evoked an apprehension somehow tied to what could be the end of time to the destruction of computer-operated services. Crash was not a word to use then. Serving as editor of a small seven-day-a-week newspaper at the time, plans were formulated in the event of any glitches. Fortunately, 2000 arrived in festive style — with no Y2K-related outages. If any services were interrupted anywhere, weather probably was to blame. Then there’s the memory of Prince’s song “1999,” which was released in 1982. And, yes, many of us remember it from the ’80s. So, another decade comes to an end. 2000 arrived in grand fashion (despite the so-called threat of Y2K). What will 2010 bring? Only time will tell, but we can hold to the hope that the economic woes that have plagued our country will be eliminated with a renewed sense of financial strength. Our nation and our county will face some difficult decisions in the new year, but, like Y2K, we can overcome.
Etc. ☞ As 2010 nears, Happy New Year — and may prosperity return. Melody Kinser

I explained to her what was happening and she offered to let me sit down and asked if she could call someone for me. I was able to purchase some orange juice and a donut and make it back to my car. The cross on the hill I recently entered the onramp to Interstate 295 North and to my dismay saw the cross that had been erected there destroyed a second time. I am trying to comprehend the reason for this act. Needless to say, I am disappointed. Like many in the community, I receive a blessing from this symbol of great love. Our country has been called a melting pot of many diverse groups of people.

Because of the opportunities and freedoms our country enjoys, all people have been welcomed, and with them their religious freedom. Now, because we are afraid of offending someone, we don’t (or can’t) display the symbol of this country’s founding faith. This cross has become a symbol of courage and determination to someone. This quiet cross on a small hill has become significant to a lot of people. How many are willing to help the person who placed it there replace it again? Bonnie Lucord Mechanicsville

Auditions for the 2010 Hanover Idols are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010. This is the third time the Hanover Arts & Activities Center has sponsored a singing competition for Hanover residents. These two “idols went on to perform at various events during Ashland’s Grand 150th Celebration in 2008, as well as events in 2009 – including special appearances at the Ashland Musical Variety Show. Sue Watson and Lorie Foley, who team up every other year for the Ashland Musical Variety Show, are once again producing Hanover Idols. Hanover Idols is open to Hanover residents ages 10 and older.

Thank you so very much!” and “I love tomato sandwiches, now I’ll have something to put on my bread!” Sharyn Moore, Extension program assistant with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAPED), said, “The quality of flavor and nutrients is higher in locally grown and harvested fresh vegetables.” Located at the north end of the County Administration Complex, the large strip was subdivided into beds for native flowers, summer vegetables, herbs, winter vegetables and perennials/annuals.
Sustainable practices such as interplanting of vegetables and flowers, adding compost, trellising, using soaker hoses and using mulch and straw and protective netting made for the pesticide-free, waterwise garden. This demonstration garden was a team effort coordinated by the Extension Office. After the county granted use of the land, Parks and Recreation crews tilled, Public Works contributed compost and mulch and the South Anna 4-H Club provided composted manure. Master Gardeners and teens representing the Hanover Youth Perspective planted the gardens on June 7 using plants and seeds donated by Master Gardeners and purchased at the Atlee High School Horticulture Department spring plant sale. “In addition to the bountiful plant

response to the market demographic showing seniors 70 and older desiring a retirement lifestyle with a focus on location and security for the future. The services and residences provided by a Continuing Care Retirement Community are important to this group and Covenant Woods’ expansion will cater to the market’s discerning tastes. “Covenant Woods is in a position to commit to this major expansion at a time when many other communities are not,” says Tim Johnson, president and CEO of Covenant Woods. “Despite current economic uncertainty, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to
continually provide high-quality care and services for those who live here. This has translated to more and more seniors showing interest in and becoming a part of the community at Covenant Woods.” Covenant Woods completed its first expansion in 2006, which included the addition of 50 Independent Living apartments to the campus and upgrades to various services. With the senior living market seeing double-digit growth over a short period of time, the need for additional residences, as well as more extensive offerings and programming, was clear to Covenant Woods’ leadership. With the approval of this second expansion, known as The Lodge, the Board of Directors will look to create a development team that will best align

with the goals of the project. Initial plans include the creation of 106 new apartments and cottages, as well as new community spaces. Nature trails already accessible to residents will be extended to increase the enjoyment of Covenant Woods’ pastoral setting. “Our 75-acre campus gives us enough room to increase the size of the community while maintaining the openness of
the natural setting that our residents have come to love,” Johnson said. The Lodge expansion project is expected to start in 2010 and take several years to complete. For more information, call 569-8000 or visit www.covenantwoods.com.

Patrick Henry takes fourth in TDIT Eagles swoop back to clinch third from Patriots 50-62
www.mechlocal.com See slideshow online!
By JP Beauchamp sports@mechlocal.com For the second time in little over a week, the Patrick Henry girls’ basketball team met up with Colonial District rival Mills Godwin when the two teams faced off in the consolation game of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament last Wednesday at the Siegel Center. Though the game did not count in either team’s district record, the Patriots came into the contest looking to even the score against the Eagles who had handed them their first loss of the season. In the battle for the TDIT’s third place trophy, the Patriots got off to a slow start but managed to dig themselves out of an early 7-point deficit and turn it into a 4-point lead by the half, 24-28. But as in their previous game against Godwin, the winds of change turned and once-again Patrick Henry found themselves chasing the Eagles in the third and fourth periods before falling 60-52. Regardless of the loss, Patriots’ head coach Leslie Nuckols felt the experience was good for the girls. “The tournament was a great opportunity for us,” she said. “Instead of just having practices for the

two weeks of winter break, we actually got to play three really competitive games. The girls enjoyed the feel of the tournament. Everyone was nice; they got T-shirts, pens and water bottles. They were just really impressed with the way they were treated. It was really a great honor to be the only Hanover school to be here.” The Patriots reached the consolation game by defeating St. Catherines’ 42-39 in the TDIT opener then falling to Midlothian 56-50 in the second round.

In the rematch with Godwin, Nuckol’s strategy was two-fold. “We knew we needed to play really intense defense, and we needed to score more effectively,” she said, pointing out something the team did not do well the previous night. “Last night (against Midlothian) we had some issues putting the ball in the basket; and that ailed us again the first quarter today,” Nuckols said. “We missed a lot of shots in the paint.” The majority of the Patriots’ first quarter shots came from
Taylor Huber, who threw up nothing but bricks until the second quarter, yet ended the evening with 32 points—one shy of the TDIT single-game record set by Meadowbrook’s Crystal Lawrence in 2005. “I thought we played well,” Huber said, contributing the loss to defensive lapses. “We didn’t pick up as well as we should have on our people. We got a little lost sometimes. We should play a little bit tougher defense next time.” Coming out of the locker room with a four point lead,
Patrick Henry appeared to be in good shape to square things up with Godwin but a hot shooting hand from the Eagles’ Sallie Foster proved their undoing. “Third quarter we came out and the Foster girl hit an incredible number of 3-pointers,” Nuckols said. “That was difficult to come back from.” Foster, a 5-5 senior, caught the Patriots off guard firing in eight 3-pointers and a career high 27 points by game’s end. As Foster had only put up three points the previous game, the Patriots had not viewed Foster
as a viable threat. “The first time I think she only scored two points against us,” said Nuckols. “She was part of our focus, but she wasn’t our main focus. Now, the next time she’ll be more of a focus.” Huber agreed. “When we played her last time, she wasn’t doing that. This time was a little bit more of surprise. We’ll need to put a little more pressure on her next time.” Another factor that cannot be overlooked was the absence see PATRIOTS, pg. 29 `
PATRIOTS Continued from pg. 28 b
of the Patriots’ tallest player, six-foot senior center Gracie Schmitt who suffered a seasonending injury when she tore her ACL in the previous meeting with Godwin. “We definitely missed Gracie’s presence on the court,” Nuckols said. “Before she was injured, she was averaging double-digit rebounds; so that’s a lot to make up for. Our height has decreased significantly without her playing, but I think the girls understand what they have to do to make up for that loss, and I think they’re doing a good job.” Despite Schmitt’s absence, the smaller Patrick Henry squad came up with a number of rebounds through scrappy play. “Trinity Kenney and Katie Anderson are really picking up where Gracie has left off,” Nuckols said. “They understand that they’ve got to be in there boxing out and getting those rebounds. We want to push the ball down the floor too; and it all starts with the rebound. So,
I think that we’re doing a pretty good job.” For Anderson and Huber the press and their breaks worked well. Were it not the steals and turnovers generated by the Patriots defense, the disparity in scoring would have been much greater. Certainly the press was a factor when the Patriots chose to run it but due to playing their third game in three days, it was not a complete game option. “It’s a stamina thing,” Nuckols said. “Godwin’s such a great team that once you do the press a couple of possessions, they’re going to eventually break it. So, it’s something that we only throw out a few possessions.” Having already played and lost to the Eagles twice, the Patriots will travel to Godwin on January 22 then possibly meet them once more in the Colonial District Tournament. “Maybe this will help us out,” Nuckols said. “The girls should be confident now. They know that they can play with them, and that we can beat them. It’s just a matter of us having four good quarters. They’ve got to

stay intense, and stay confident for four quarters. But, they’re going to get there. The next time we play them, it will actually affect our district record. A lot more will be on the line. It will be at Godwin. So, they just need to get ready. But we’ve got a lot of games before that one, so we’ve just got to be focused on what’s ahead.” PATRICK HENRY (4-3) Huber 32, Anderson 9, T. Atlee swimmer will take talents to the Tide Katie Schroeder signs letter of intent with University of Alabama By Jim Ridolphi sports@mechlocal.com The University of Alabama is not only making national news with its potential national champion football team, but is also capturing local headlines with a recent signing when Atlee all-district swimmer Katie Schroeder decided to join the Crimson Tide’s Swim and Dive team. Last month, Schroeder signed a letter of intent with the Southeast Conference contender. Tide head coach Eric Mcliquham indicated that Schroeder will assist his team in several areas. “Katie is a tough competitor who will definitely help us in the distance as well as butterfly and IM events,” McIlquham said in a press release. Schroeder has anchored the Atlee team for the past four years, and also swims year round at Poseidon Swimming Club. She was also last year’s Central Region Swimmer of the Year. Schroeder entertained a list of possible schools to further her academic and swimming careers, but a trip to Tuscaloosa sealed the deal for Alabama. “I never really thought about Alabama until the coach contacted me and I learned more about the school, their swim program, and their academics,” Schroeder said. “I decided to take one of my recruiting trips there. When I met the coaches and the team I knew it was a place I would fit in well.
Everyone was like a big family. When I stepped on that beautiful campus I knew it was where I wanted to go for the next four years.” While excited about the collegiate opportunities, Schroeder said the Atlee and Poseidon programs have been a large part of her life for many years and leaving isn’t easy. “I will miss my friends and the fun, team atmosphere,” Schroeder said. “Coach (Karen) Seeber and Coach Barnes have been great.” The Poseidon Swimming Club and coach Ted Sallade also played an important and vital role in Schroeder’s development. “My coach (at PSDN), Ted Sallade, made me the swimmer that I am today,” Schroeder said. “Even though I am so excited about Alabama, I will miss him greatly and know I can always count on him for advice.” When the talented senior isn’t practicing or studying, she’s probably back in the pool teaching, something she enjoys and is passionate about. “I love teaching kids how to swim,” she said. “At Poseidon Swimming, we teach the Peter PAL (Police Athletic League) kids how to swim on Saturday mornings after practice. I also help teach at swim programs in the winter for Atlee Recreation and Burkwood, and volunteer to help with Special Olympics.” Schroeder is looking forward to the heated competition that is the trade-
mark of SEC swimming. “I am so excited to train with their distance coach, James Barber, and the team. Alabama has a great reputation and the SEC is one of the fastest conferences. I hope it will make me a better swimmer competing there.” Schroeder currently holds the 200 and 500-meter Central Region records. She is also aware of the challenges waiting for her as she competes on a national stage, but Schroeder is no stranger to hard work, demanding schedules and a dedication that produces champions. “Swimming is a sport that requires an immense amount of dedication to compete at a high level. I would never be able to wake up at 3:55 a.m. and practice before school three to four days a week and then practice after school every day for three hours, and three hours on Saturday unless I truly loved the sport,” she said. “Even though swimming has been a lot of work for me over the years, I would not change it for anything. I have grown so much as a person and an athlete because of it.” Schroeder will follow in the footsteps of Atless’ Hannah Brinks who is a senior on the Alabama swim team this season. Schroeder is the daughter of Mechanicsville’s Jeff and Cheree Photo submitted by Cheree Schroeder Schroeder. She has a sister, Kristi, who Last month Atlee senior Katie Schroeder signed a letter of intent to continue swims for Marshall University, and an her swimming career at the University of Alabama. 11-year old brother, Kyle.

Beth. “She’s better now, but it was very difficult to fit anything else into my life at the time.” Beth got the itch to join the 10k Training Team at her local YMCA last year after her husband successfully completed the program and the 2009 Monument Avenue 10k. The only problem was that she faced the same obstacles that all new runners face – self-doubt and intimidation. “I wasn’t sure about making it past
one mile, let alone 6.2. But what we all need is someone to tell us to stop saying ‘we can’t’. The 10k Training Team did that for me.” The YMCA 10k Training Team is a program designed to help participants meet their fitness goals while training for the March 27 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. The program is offered at 14 different YMCA branches and provides a format for walkers, novice, and intermediate runners to complete
Runner overcomes self-doubt and intimidation
Sports Backers When Beth Trebour’s daughter was born with a disability, she found that there was little to no time for exercise. Now an avid runner, biker and triathlete, Beth credits the YMCA 10k Training Team with jump-starting her journey to a more active lifestyle. “I quit work to focus 100% on my daughter and take care of her,” recalls

a 10-week training program and lay the groundwork for a regular routine of physical fitness. “The support and encouragement you receive as part of the training team is amazing,” Beth says. “There are coaches with you every step of the way. I was so incredibly proud when I ran that first mile. I couldn’t believe I had made it.” Ro Gammon, Beth’s training team coach, knows that it can be difficult
to take that initial step and sign up but emphasizes that it can lead to a lifetime of healthier living. “Beth is a wonderful example of the positive changes that can result from participating on the 10k training team,” she says. “It has been such a pleasure to see her confidence grow and her passion for running and exercise develop. Beth went from not exercising at all to successfully see RUNNER, pg. 31 `

The Hanover U15 and Hanover U13 lacrosse teams won the RISE Winter League championship last weekend. The Hanover teams were comprised of boys from Oak Knoll and Chickahominy Middle Schools. They both defeated tough teams, comprised largely of players from the elite Richmond Shock Lacrosse team, in the championship games. Lacrosse in the county continues to grow. Atlee High School already has an official club team and administrators at Hanover High School have filed an application for club status at HHS for the 2011 season. We are hoping for formal board approval in March.
Miles Baker of West Point, Va. decided to start bodybuilding at age 54. After 15 years as a power lifter and winning several state titles he was ready for something different. So in April of 2009 his new training began. Within the span of a few months his dedicated training and dieting resulted in quite a change. From 208 lbs. to 168 lbs with a body fat content of 5.6 percent. In his first attempt at the NPA SI-FLEX FALL Classic in October he took first place in the Novice Light weight, Overall Novice first place, Masters 50+, Overall masters, Male Middleweight and Overall Male Champion. In his second attempt in November at the NGA meet in Northern Va. he once again did well, winning first place in 50-60 Masters, second place in

completing the 10k, then on to doing bike rides and triathlons. It is stories like this that make being a part of this program so rewarding.” With a single commitment, Beth was on her way to a healthier and happier life, and now she can’t image her life any differently. “Ro talked me into doing the 10k Training Team program,” she says. “Now, exercising is my sanity. I can’t wait to give back and get other people encouraged to take the same first step. We all have to start somewhere and for me, the Training Team was the answer. If I can do it, anybody can do it and you’ll be better for it.” Registration is now open for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k and the YMCA
