Community unites to battle heroin, opioid abuse By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – “Change minds and save lives” was the purpose of the Monday, Feb. 27, program, “Chasing the Dragon,” which targeted heroin and opiate abuse. Citizens from across Hanover County gath-

abuse is downright frightening. In my nearly 25 years of law enforcement, I have never seen a category of narcotics abuse that is so devastating to individuals and families as heroin. Our best chance for success is prevention, prevention, and more prevention,” said Ashland Police Chief Douglas Goodman. Throughout 2014-2015, there were more deaths for the first time ever that resulted from opioid overdoses; with 733 and 801 deaths, respectively, than there were from motor vehicle accidents on the commonwealth’s highways. According to data from

the Virginia Department of Health, opioid overdose deaths in 2016 exceeded 1,000 as the crisis continues. The event looked at different things that Virginians can do to help prevent substance abuse. Among these methods of prevention were a “parent toolkit” offered on drugfree.org, knowing the signs of addiction and substance use such as pinpoint pupils or sleepiness, talking to your loved ones if you have suspicions of someone struggling with addiction, properly disposing of medications with your local health department, as well as obtain-

ing Naloxone. Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an overdose that is caused by an opioid drug, such as prescription painkillers or heroin. When administered during an overdose, Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within 2 to 8 minutes. More information regarding Naloxone can be found at getnaloxonenow.org. Jennings told Salmon that he didn’t believe she loved him and that he was going to kill her. She could be heard in the recording screaming loudly and begging for her life, saying she needed to live for the sake of her children. Jennings was at a loss for words when he spoke during Monday’s sentencing hearing and noted that he wasn’t in the right state of mind the night of the killing and said he hoped Salmon’s family would one day forgive him. Prosecutor Shari Skipper said that while Jennings’ attorney asked for some degree of leniency, she said he wouldn’t be in this situation if he had granted Salmon “some leniency” when she begged for her life.

Keeping it accurate in a fake news world

| Reader Views

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Facts. Ethics. Integrity. These have been the words in the world of journalism I have known since 1975. Sensationalism isn’t acceptable nor is creating rather than reporting the news. Having a mentor who, like me, learned the business hands-on had many benefits. We adhered to the principles of newspaper gathering and how we presented that information to our readers. When I started in the industry, the only fake news was the National Enquirer and Weekly World News. A co-worker would buy the latter for amusement. I remember an issue in 1990 with a cover that had a blurry image of a woman who had survived the sinking of the Titanic and her dress was still wet.

By some standards today, that almost seems tame. What’s saddest to this writer is that so many people fall prey to whatever they see in print or online as being the gospel. I have been fortunate to have had employers who would accept nothing less than credible and reliable reporting. As broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow said, “To be persuasive, we must be believable. To be believable, we must be credible. To be credible, we must be truthful.” Social media is a significant part of our responsibilities to our readers. Being relevant in the cyber world is no different than in print. For those of us who remember, “Dragnet,” Jack Webb’s character, Sgt. Joe Friday, often said, “Just the facts, ma’am. Just the facts.” I’ll “Amen!” that. It is shocking to discover on popular social

media sites the misleading and completely false being doled out by wannabes. Does it empower these folks who abuse the freedom of the press and free speech? Here’s a simple solution: Get it right or don’t do it. If we inadvertently (and it is NEVER intentional) make an error, we step up and accept responsibility and apologize accordingly. To emphasize our commitment to you, our newspapers in the Richmond Suburban Group are publishing ads that state “Real FACTS. Real STORIES. Real NEWS. Journalism you can depend on.” We’re here for you and because of you. And always know that what you read within these pages is fair, balanced and accurate to the best of our abilities. We don’t have time for fake news.

‘Whites only’ lake spun its way into racism talk By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s funny how you remember little episodes in life, things that may seem unimportant or insignificant to others but seem to stick in your mind for a lifetime. Often, those memories are jarred loose by more current events in our lives that remind us of those

small interludes of life. And so it was when one of my children asked me questions about racism, and, more specifically, segregation in the South. I first explained that racism was not just a regional issue, and discrimination permeated an entire nation for the first half of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, its effects didn’t end at the Mason Dixon line, but a majority of African Americans did live in the South. I can recall incidents involving race from my childhood and teenage years that I deem unworthy of repeating, and it occurred to me that my children have a far different angle on

race relations than those growing up in my generation. They know no differences pertaining to race, and describe their friends by the way they wear their hair, or the color of their backpack. It’s an innocence that never fails to inspire me as a parent, and reassures me that see RACISM, pg. 8

Elected officials asked to help in opioid battle (Editor’s note: The following was addressed to Senators Ryan McDougle and Jennifer McClellan and Delegates Buddy Fowler and Chris Peace.) I am aware that each of you has just completed a grueling session in the General Assembly. It is, however, unfortunate that you were not present last night (Feb. 27) at the Chasing the Dragon (opioid abuse) event in Ashland. Why? Because Hanover County residents are very concerned about opioid abuse and its huge toll on lives. We need your participation. With a packed house, there was a lively discussion about the issue and many questions about how the crisis could be averted. Citizens want to better understand this tragic, very complex issue. They are asking politicians, the medical profession, the pharmaceutical industry, community service organizations and law enforcement for help. Everyone appears to have a common goal (to stop opioid abuse), but we are wandering around in the maze of political and consumer forces. There is an urgent need for further community forums. Opioid abuse is indiscriminate as to zip code or economic status, or to age, gender or culture. I implore each of you to take a leadership role in bringing opioid abuse forums to Hanover County. there is hope for a future where people live without prejudice or discrimination. Sadly, we are not there yet, and the subject of racism has been a frequent topic in recent news reports, prompting the questions from my children. Before I could get very far in my explanation, one of my children asked me why people had racist thoughts. That prompted me to recall an incident from my childhood that still represents the first time I was confronted with segregation, and the failure of one race of people to understand the plight of another. It was a hot July day when my father and I arrived at the small drinking fountain at Byrd Park in Richmond. The fountain was a favorite spot for thirsty Richmonders and cool spring water flowed from various spigots at the base of the popular watering hole. People brought jugs to

capture the natural goodness and carried off enough for a refreshing sip later in the day. As we left the spring and proceeded across the lake in the rear of the park, my father pulled the car over and got out. On one side of the road, a magnificent concrete stairway led down to the lake that was the most famous place in Richmond to feed the ducks. More puzzling was an identical set of steps on the opposite side of the road that led to seemingly nothing except overgrown bushes and woods. We walked down the steps and discovered a dilapidated bathhouse and the remains of what was once a vibrant swimming area for locals. “What was this place?” I asked. He explained that Shield’s Lake was a popular Richmond swimming venue for years until it closed in 1955. The city said the cost of renovating the facility outweighed its usefulness, considering the fact that several neighborhood pools had been

constructed in recent years. But, my father explained that Shield’s Lake was a white only establishment, and racial tensions of the era played a part in the popular lake’s demise. It was the first time I had considered a phrase like “white only,” and I thought about it quite a bit over the ensuing years. I’ve thought of his carefully worded explanation regarding the swimming lake at Byrd Park numerous times when confronted with issues of racism in my lifetime. As we drove home from the park, I finally gathered the nerve to ask what I knew was an unwanted question. “Why didn’t the people want to swim with the other people?” “I’m not sure, son, but that’s just the way it is,” he replied. I’m thankful I can remind my children that’s not the way it is today, and their attitudes and enlightenment mean there is hope for a world that often seems divided by unimportant differences.

Thanking Studley postmaster In today’s world it seems like every time we turn around we are hearing someone “bashing someone for something.” It seems far less frequently, that we hear about “good people.” I’d like to draw attention to one of these good people. Dan, at the Studley Post Office, is the nicest and most helpful postmaster I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Not only is there rarely a line there, he always helps you with a smile on his face. A few weeks ago, I was looking for a particular retired stamp and he went above and beyond trying to locate them for me. He sent out an email that reached many other post offices and by the next morning he called me and said he had located them and that they would be in his office by the next day. It is so nice to deal with nice, caring, helpful people.

Benefits of walking and biking options Larnie Allgood’s letter complaining about Hanover County Board of Supervisors chair Angela Kelly-Wiecek’s interest in promoting quality of life in Hanover misses the mark with his comment “bike trails will cost a fortune and will benefit very few”. Our county has chosen to focus growth in cluster areas that includes a majority of the population. Those areas lack safe walking and biking options (sidewalks and bike trails) with no access to commercial areas or other neighborhoods, except by driving a car. These amenities provide so many tangible benefits to all citizens, such as allowing kids to play safely in their neighborhoods, promoting healthy physical activity and the wellbeing of its citizens. If a community only invests in adding more cars and traffic that is all you end up with. Sidewalks and bike trails would cost a fraction of the

dollars being spent on roadway construction projects, such as the $14 million U.S. 360/Bell Creek project. Other jurisdictions around Hanover are starting to understand this. It is time for Hanover to as well. Dan Widner Mechanicsville

Library photo display spotlights African Americans By Mollie Hargrove Reporter

M

ECHANICSVILLE – A historical display of photographs centered around the lifestyles and careers of African Americans locally and statewide has been created at the Mechanicsville Branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library system. Francine Hunter pointed out the wall of photographs on the right wall of the library upon entering, and the amount of historical evidence. The photographs are a collection of told and untold stories with visual representations of American history; many of the photographs were taken in Mechanicsville. They date as far back as 1883, when the First Union Baptist Church opened its doors. Hunter and other elders of First Union Baptist spoke of the overwhelming amount of support the community has given them regarding this project, and how they could

not have created such a unique, historical display without those contributions. Many people in the photographs are ancestors of First Union Baptist members, and some of the elders are in the photographs as children or teenagers. However, the display is not only centered on First Union Baptist Church, it’s a historical outlook on the lifestyles of African Americans in and around Hanover County. Hunter said she has been humbled by the amount of community support and positive dialogue that has come from this project. She said there has been so much positive support that they are leaving the display up until the end of March. Hunter said she dreams of moving the display to a permanent location, such as the Hanover County Black Heritage Society, but space is Mollie Hargrove/The Local limited. The Mechanicsville Branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library system continues to display historical photographs pertaining to She said the Black Heritage see DISPLAY, pg.19

Council starts budget process with Public Works By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local

KATHY ABBOTT

ASHLAND — Ashland Town Council started work on the municipality’s 2017-2018 budget last week during a work session. On Tuesday, Feb. 28, Town Manager Joshua Farrar’s presentation focused on the Public Works Department. “We were working towards Josh’s budget and focused on revenues, the capital project fund, and public works,” said Councilwoman Kathy Abbott. Farrar is responsible for preparing the budget that will be submitted to

town council for approval. Three work sessions have been scheduled that are designated to focus on the remaining government departments, as well as other related items included in the budget. Some highlights from the Feb. 28 work session reported that a new law enforcement officer was hired in the Ashland Police Department, with a budget cost of $70,000. It also was a good year for town employees, with positive rates for health insurance, retirement (VIrginia Retirement System), and workers compensation. Increasing revenues were from

local sources, up 3.3% from fiscal year 2017 amended budget, and the Commonwealth, up about 2% from FY17. Revenue from the federal government remained flat. Mike Davis, director of public works, highlighted items in that department’s budget, which were mainly limited to an increase in motor vehicle insurance. The second session was held last night (Tuesday, March 7), with an emphasis on the parks and recreation and tourism departments, as well as non-departmental needs. Abbott expressed the town’s

strong desire for resident involvement throughout the budget process, stressing the importance that the public’s input has on shaping its outcome. “We really want to let people know about these work sessions, because we want citizens to attend. We want to hear the public’s thoughts and opinions on this,” she said. The third and budget work session is scheduled for March 14. On behalf of council, Abbott encouraged Ashland residents to attend and share thoughts. After that, Farrar will deliver his see COUNCIL, pg. 22

DISPLAY Continued from pg. 11

Society has enough photographs and artifacts to fill up multiple walls of the public library in which the display is located, and, as time goes on, more and more people will contribute. The display is filled with historical figures significant to local American history. John Cephas, a carpenter, is just one of the many influential figures of this time. Cephas was known as “the carpenter who just kept on building,” named for his efforts in rebuilding the First Union Baptist Church when it burnt down in 1941. In addition to Cephas, the

singing group known as the Soul Seekers began at First Baptist Church. The Soul Seekers have been a renowned group for over 50 years, aiding in the help of organizations and community services across the state. The group has received the Citizens Award for its efforts and continues to be an inspiring group with a rich history. Carole Pryor Starcher remembers the gatherings at First Union Baptist Church, often know as Homecoming. It was an all day affair filled with praise, food and laughter. Starcher developed an incredible sense of community for the church and its mem-

bers. After being unaffiliated for 35 years, she came back and continues to be a member, showing how strong a community the institution has with its members. Phyllis Winston Holloway’s memory was when the commonwealth of Virginia began integrating the school systems, first allowing African Americans to choose between Patrick Henry High School and Gandy in Ashland towards the end of 1963, than finally moving to total integration in 1969. Photographs surrounding these moments are documented in the display. Regarding school integration, the elders of First Union

Baptist Church pointed out a particularly interesting series of official school board transcripts centered around a man named Deacon Lucian O. Hunter, and ancestor of Francine Hunter. Lucian O. Hunter was a pioneer in organizing transportation to the Hanover County Negro Training School in 1934. Hunter requested the school board to grant him permission to transport students, but he was turned down multiple times with claims from the school board that the transportation was “unnecessary” even though his request was to pay

for the transportation out of his own pocket, not causing taxpayers a cent. His request was finally approved, a huge step for history in Hanover County. A monument is being erected in Lucian O. Hunter’s honor, and on July 20, 2000, a proclamation was introduced. One photograph that was donated to the project was not labeled, and the Hanover Black Heritage Society would like anyone with any information about the identities of the following individuals to reach out to them at 804368-7314.

The club thanked all of the individuals, volunteers and businesses that supported the cause. “Without your countless hours of planning, organization, advertising, and running of the annual Shuk’nPul, without your hard work and dedication,” Chester Sienkdo said. “We could have never been able to make the donations.” More than $440,000 in donations were made directly

from the 36-year event. Monies provided many scholarships and donations to fire and rescue departments. Money was also donated to similar community organizations. Hanover Habitat for Humanity joined up with the Shuk N Pul event and helped tremendously in the last years. Mechanicsville Ruritan members recently delivered their 2017 Mechanicsville

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting con-

nections with the communities they serve. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

Hanover ousted by decisive Judges in semis By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor SALEM – Hanover had been playing hot coming into the VHSL Group 4A state boys basketball tournament. Unfortunately, a week-long break between the end of the Region 4A East tournament and the start of the state tournament may have dampened their fire. The Hawks scored the first 5 points, but stumbled a bit sluggish against an aggressive John Handley team in a regional quarterfinal yesterday at Salem Civic Center. The Judges made them pay, going ahead early and pulling steadily away in a 87-56 win Friday. Hanover was led by Ryan Payne with 16 points. The Judges, on the other hand, had four double-figure scorers: Keevon Martin and Kobe Tigney with 19 points apiece, Michael Brown with 17 and Gus Wise with 10. The Hawks finished the season with a 13-16 record and a number of firsts: first appearance in a state tournament, first (and second) victory in a regional tournament, and first Conference 20 championship. “It’s amazing, but it’s really sad, though,” said Hanover senior Josh Plummer. “You never want a team like this to end a run like this. We just grew so close as a family. We learned

ASHLAND – Seven was a lucky number for Randolph-Macon’s men’s and women’s tennis teams Saturday, with both teams defeating their counterparts from Lynchburg College 7-2 in their respective Old Dominion Athletic Conference openers. In both cases, the Yellow Jackets’ doubles teams got Randolph-Macon off to a good start. The men’s team swept their doubles matches 3-0. The women were 2-1 in doubles. “If we get up by 2-1 or even 3-0 in doubles, I would take us against anybody in the conference,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Charles Gray. Springers overwhelm Atlee in 5A semifinal By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch HAMPTON – Alyse Armentrout and the rest of the Atlee girls basketball team saw their season end abruptly Thursday night at Hampton University as they fell to Highland Springs 60-33 in the VHSL Group 5A girls basketball quarterfinals. The Raiders were outscored 16-0 in the first quarter and didn’t get their first points of the game until the 6:18 mark of the second quarter when Hannah Nitz scored a layup. Highland Springs (26-1) will oppose Princess Anne (Virginia Beach) at the Siegel Center Saturday in the 5A state championship game. Atlee’s season ended in the state quarterfinals for a second straight year. The Raiders finished with a 22-6 record. Also coming to a close is the career of Armentrout, a 6foot senior forward and fouryear starter who scored 1,326 points as a Raider. During her senior season, she averaged 18.6 points, 15.3 rebounds and 8.7 blocks. In all but two of Atlee’s 28 games, Armentrout had a double double. Eleven times she recorded a triple double. “That’s once-in-a-lifetime player,” Atlee coach Michael Rawlings said. “She had the ability to control the game from both ends of the court.” In her final game, she recorded 11 points on 5-of-

The Springers used a man-toman press, double-teamed ballhandlers and dived into passing lanes. “That was some of the best defense we’ve played,” Harris said. “In the first quarter, we just set the tone. We were aggressive. We were on the boards. We were in the passing lanes. We were active.” Jennifer Coleman led Highland Springs with 15 points. Cam Gatling scored 12. A.Z. Bacot added eight and brought down 14 rebounds. Kylie Eastman scored 11 point for Atlee, and Aya Youssef had nine points and five rebounds. Last year, Atlee’s season came to an end against the eventual state champion, Princess Anne. The past two years have been among Atlee’s best since winning the Group AAA state championship in 2003. After winning the Conference 16 tournament this year, Atlee reached the 5A North region playoffs, losing to Thomas Edison 57-48. Edison nearly knocked off Highland Springs, but fell in double overtime in the state semifinals. Yellow Jackets win one, drop two to Rowan By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – RandolphMacon head baseball coach Ray Hedrick says limiting an opponent’s “big” offensive innings to two runs or less will give his team a chance to win ball games. The Yellow Jackets failed to do that in a weekend series against Rowan. Randolph-Macon (8-4) dropped two of three to Rowan (3-1), losing Saturday and splitting Sunday afternoon’s doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets allowed innings with three or more runs in both losses; an issue that Hedrick said has come up in all four of the team’s defeats to date. “I think we’ve got four losses now out of 12 games, and every loss we’ve given up more than two runs in an inning,” Hedrick said. “We’ve got to do a better job of minimizing.” In Saturday’s series opener, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a firstinning three-run homer from Cole Migliorini and a solo shot in the second inning by Jeff Butler. But Rowan answered with six runs in the fifth inning and would go on to win 7-5. Randolph-Macon would get revenge in the first game of Sunday’s double-header, walking away with a 5-3 victory. The Yellow Jackets broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fifth inning. Butler started off the scoring when he crossed the plate on a balk. Jay Patti followed with a single that brought home Rick Spiers. Patti and Butler were responsible for the other runs as well. Patti slammed a two-run homer to right field in the second inning while a Butler sacrifice fly scored Zach Evans in the third. Once the Yellow Jackets

30

took the lead, Nick Roth put the game away on the mound. The sophomore from Benedictine threw five scoreless innings in relief and struck out six Rowan batters. He was a bright spot for a pitching staff that struggled all weekend. “He was tremendous. He went out there and changed speeds and threw strikes. He had some conviction and he competed,” Hedrick said. “He had that, and our guys fed off that. Unfortunately, in the second game today, we just didn’t pitch with that conviction.” As Hedrick hinted, the Macon pitching staff was unable to hold off the Rowan bats in the rubber match, a 10-2 Profs victory. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead behind a Migliorini sacrifice fly. However, the visiting Profs answered with a three-run triple by Zach Leach in the second inning. Rowan scored three runs in the fourth and seventh innings as well, with the final runs coming off a long homerun over the left field fence. Hedrick said the key for his team moving forward is to continue to do the everyday things that bring wins – hit well and be consistent on the mound. “You just got to keep working. We have to continue to go out and get better offensively. We have to continue to pitch with conviction and be able finish innings,” said Hedrick. “We’re not 4-8. We’re 8-4. We need to continue to play like a team that has been successful and continue to make the progress and strides necessary to compete for a championship in May.” Randolph-Macon will host Emory & Henry for a double header on the 11th. Jonathan Howard can be reached at sports@mechlocal.

found that winning required a little more effort in singles. Sophomore Jacob Haines, the Jackets’ number one, faced Lynchburg freshman phenom Juan Borga. The Argentinian native showed why he was a highly coveted recruit, as his powerful forehand kept Haines running throughout the match. In the end, that power was too much for Haines, who fell 6-2, 6-1. Despite the seemingly lopsided score, Gray praised his team’s top-ranked player. “I was really pleased with Jacob,” Gray said. “He hung tough with Borga out there today, and that’s a challenge for anybody.” Richmond native Baxter Carter also fell in straight sets, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Bryce Barber. But the Yellow Jackets won all four of their remaining matches. Grant Sarver, Alex Curnow, and Stuart McCroskey each won in straight sets, and Shane Berry rallied after dropping the second set 1-6, coming back to win the third set 1-0 to secure his match. That ability to play through adversity and pull out the victory is something the Yellow Jackets are working on this season. “We have a tendency on both teams to try to over-hit balls,”

Gray said. “We need to work on just grinding matches out. We’re not going to hit anybody off the court this season. Instead, we’re going to keep balls in play and just wear them out.” On the women’s side of the draw, Lynchburg’s Christina Harris showed flashes of dominance in both doubles and singles. In the doubles event, she and partner Lilli Altenburg defeated Caitlin Delmas and Toni McDonald 8-6, then Harris overpowered Delmas in singles, winning 6-1, 6-3. But Harris’s victories were the only bright spots for the Hornets, who dropped the rest of their matches to the Yellow Jackets. Molly Jesseman and Melissa Tomlin were a dominant doubles team, as were Stephanie Yeager and Landon Aud. Jesseman and Tomlin only allowed their Lynchburg opponents to win two games, and Yeager and Aud only gave up one. In the singles matches for the 2-6 positions, the Yellow Jackets (3-0, 1-0) surrendered only 10 games collectively. “I like where we are right now,” Gray said. “We’re getting better every day. So absolutely I think we’re going to be a team to be reckoned with in the ODAC.
