Chimps get Lone Star reprieve By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local
Jodi Deal/The Local
County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. told the Hanover Business Council about development and economic recovery.
Curtis Shepperson and his wife Bernice were not present at last week’s meeting when the Hanover County Board of Supervisors endorsed a plan that would resolve an ongoing issue regarding the couple’s six
chimpanzees. Originally permitted to keep two primates at their Windy Oaks site, the Sheppersons have been at odds with the county for three years over the animals since several escapes raised alarms with some neighbors. In a unanimous vote, the supervisors voted to partici-
pate in an agreement among the Sheppersons, the Houston Zoo and Hanover County that would transfer ownership of all six of the chimps by the end of the year. The Houston Zoo has agreed to accept the chimps as a family and house them in their natural, state-of-the-art

T
he time has come to start planning for the 2013 National Night Out in Hanover County, which will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 6. “If your community is planning to have a National Night Out event on Aug. 6 or you would like more information about National Night Out, we would like to hear from you,” Lt. Chris R. Whitley of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office said. Neighborhoods planning events are asked to contact Deputy Barry Bland at 804-3657116 or by e-mail at bwbland@hanovercounty. gov by Friday, July 26, so that the Sheriff ’s Office can make plans to stop by and thank residents for their support in keeping Hanover County communities safe. Those interested in participating also can download and submit a Pledge Form, which can be found at National Night Out Pledge Form. “National Night Out is an annual event designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with one another and with their local law enforcement partners,”
Whitley added. He said the goal is to heighten crimeprevention awareness, build support and participation in local anti-crime programs, and, most importantly, “send a message that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.” Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, said, “It’s also the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors even better.” The sheriff and several members of his department participate in National Night Out activities. The hours vary as determined by homeowners associations and organizations. To learn more about National Night Out, visit http://www.natw.org/.

Authorities are investigating a message scrawled in a bathroom at King William High School that threatens to “kill everyone.” The message was brought to the attention of the school’s principal about 10 a.m. Thursday,
said King William County schools Superintendent Mark Jones. Officials said they are taking the message seriously and will be adding security at county schools today and next week. The message, written in a boy’s bathroom at the school, says, “I will kill everyone.” Written below the threatening words is Monday’s
date. Beside the message is a crudely drawn symbol that authorities said they do not recognize. King William sheriff’s Lt. Tim Hixenbaugh said he has sent a picture of the symbol to law enforcement officials nationwide to see if anyone recognizes it. Authorities on Thursday were

By Ramon E. Chalkley III Special to The Local (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Ramon E. “Trip” Chalkley III, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Hanover County.) The following is a summary of new laws or amendments to existing legislation passed by the most recent General Assembly. All of the mentioned legislation went into effect on Monday, July 1, 2013. Please be aware that this is only a summary of new legislation as regards criminal statutes which I believe to be of interest to my fellow citizens. It is not a complete list of all legislation and is not a comprehensive discussion of all criminal legislation. A magistrate will be permitted to require an accused’s fingerprints and/or photograph prior to releasing the accused on bail. The accused will accompany the law enforcement officer to a processing location and the
prints and/or photograph may be taken wherever the magistrate is located, including a regional jail. A duly impaneled multijurisdictional grand jury will be able to investigate more crimes, including human trafficking, money laundering, mob crimes, malicious felony assault, robbery, felonious sexual assault, and robbery. By statute, the scope of investigation by a multijurisdictional grand jury is limited to enumerated crimes. Arrest statutes are amended to permit a jail officer at a regional jail or jail farm to execute an arrest warrant, capias or summons issued anywhere within the Commonwealth. Currently, only those with law enforcement powers may do so. Judges will be empowered to stay an order modifying bond for arrestees upon good cause shown and for long as reasonably practicable for an expedited hearing by another court. may request such a stay (delay the implementation of the decision). Protective orders will not be stayed if for a violation of an initial protective order or family abuse protective orders issued with a family abuse disposition. A new statute was enacted permitting a Physical Evidence Recovery Kit examination of a sexual assault victim incapable of giving consent or making an informed decision. Medical personnel may conduct a PERK exam when there is a need to act, no legally authorized representative of the examinee is available, and a “capacity reviewer” provides confirmation. Also new, photographs, xrays, etc., of an incapacitated adult may be taken without the consent of the person responsible for said adult as part of the medical evaluation of the suspected abuse on the incapacitated adult. The evidence resulting there from may be introduced in any civil or criminal proceeding. A drone (unmanned aircraft system) moratorium was imposed on state and local law enforcement agencies until July 1, 2015. Exceptions are present for Amber Alerts, Senior Alerts, Blue Alerts and search and rescue operations among others. It will be a Class 3 misdemeanor to place an electronic tracking device through “intentionally deceptive means” and without consent to track the location of any person. Certain exceptions are provided, including law enforcement, fleet vehicles and private investigators in the course of business with the property owner’s consent. Protection of the felony assault and battery statute was extended to local and regional correctional officers, EMS [Emergency Medical Services] personnel and magistrates while performing their official duties. A second offense of stalking will be a Class 6 felony when
it occurs within five years of a prior stalking conviction and the defendant also was convicted within the past five years of assault against the same victim, domestic assault, or violation of a protective order. A third offense of stalking will be a felony and a protective order based upon stalking will prevent the purchase or transport of a firearm. The statute making it unlawful to impersonate a sheriff, police officer, etc., was amended to add federal law enforcement officers and any local city, county and state law enforcement officer to the list. A second offense of impersonation will be a Class 6 felony. “Strawman” gun purchases (buying with the intent to resell to one prohibited from purchasing a firearm) is a Class 4 felony. Texting while driving becomes a primary offense with increased fines of $125for the first offense and $250for subsequent violations. If one is texting while driving recklessly, the mandatory minimum fine will be $250. Any person previously convicted of any driving under the influence felony will be charged with a felony for any new DUI [Driving Under the Influence] offense, regardless of how distant the original DUI felony was. An amendment criminalizes the act of a person, 18 or older, proposing that a child feel or fondle the child’s own sexual or genital parts. A Class 6 felony was created for soliciting a child 16 years of age or older for prostitution and a Class 5 felony for soliciting of prostitution a child under the age of 16. New legislation provides that any person who knows or should know that another suffers from mental incapacity, uses the knowledge of that incasee CHALKLEY, pg. 17

Memories and how we celebrate independence
| Reader Views
The sounds of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” wafted through the air as fireworks lit up the skies over my hometown. Gathering on the hillside yard of a friend’s home, which overlooked the football field where firefighters served as pyrotechnic experts, was a tradition in high school. That’s a pleasant memory of the Fourth of July of my youth. The music, the laughter, the camaraderie, the fireworks still prompt a smile. Through the years, as we’ve witnessed an increase in wars and losing our own defending our freedom and fighting so others may know liberty, the significance of Independence Day has taken on a very different meaning. Rather than Pink Floyd’s “Money,” the song that stands out is “The Star Spangled Banner.” Even though, as the old saying goes, I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, I still join in whenever it’s performed. Regardless of age — and it’s certainly more obvious as we get older — we get comfortable in the lives we have in the United States. And I don’t care about anybody’s politics as we prepare for one of the greatest days in our nation’s history. Tomorrow — July 4 — we will observe Independence Day. While it’s more commonly referred to as the Fourth of July, the day we enjoy cookouts and fireworks hails back to a time when some daring souls took a stand and brought us to where we are today. And that is free, free, free. Some complain about too much government. Opinions vary. Nonetheless, we enjoy freedoms some countries will never have the privilege of experiencing. Here’s to being thankful for more than 200 years of being the United States of America. Too often we get caught up in the day-to-day business of life and — not intentionally — lose sight of what is important. It’s a given that we know and acknowledge our families and friends — but this is the time to remember how significant our country is and we should do this daily. Enjoy that hot dog or hamburger tomorrow, but remember why it is you have the opportunity to have a holiday from work. Let us take time to celebrate independence and remember those who paved the way. False, misleading information leads to spread of anger All they said was “Morning.” Every person who passed by said the same thing. “Morning.” It was meant as a greeting. “Good morning” is a greeting. “Morning” is a time of day. When I go for my many walks and bike rides, I probably hear “Morning” rather than “Good morning” nearly every time from other people. If you are greeting me, I thank you. If you are telling me it’s morning, I’m pretty sure I already know it. Our country is suffering from a loss of civility. In some ways, it’s small and hard to notice, such as the vanishing of “Good morning,” “Please” and “Thank you.” In other ways, it’s much worse. One example is the way some political extremists vent in letters to the editor, including the ones to The Mechanicsville Local. If they could scream their fury in their letters, they would do so. Instead, they are forced simply to attack the character and integrity of anyone who thinks differently than them and in some cases beseech God to bring down good people with honest beliefs. How ironic that these same “patriots” love the Second Amendment but seem to hate the First. I see a lot of anger in this country caused in part by the spread of false or misleading information. I feel some of that same anger myself when I think an injustice is done. But anymore I question the truth of what I hear. At least I recognize it, and I’m trying to be a good citizen by respecting the beliefs of people with whom I disagree. I try not to defend bad beliefs with false or misleading information, especially by displaying it on large yellow signs. I’m also trying hard to be more civil by saying “Good morning,” “Please” and “Thank you” as often as possible. Maybe my neighbors will pick up on it and start saying “Good morning” rather than “Morning.” Even better, maybe a few intolerant extremists will read this letter and think twice about attacking the character and integrity of good people with whom they disagree. SOLs something students have to get through In response to “Concern for child due to SOLs” from Tori Whitaker: Ms. Whitaker, I am not a fan of SOLs (Standards of Learning), at all, but I think you may be way over-stressing this. It’s so sad that you “think your daughter’s childhood is over already.”
You haven’t even sent your daughter to kindergarten yet and you are already so worked up about the SOL testing that you may be clouding your daughter’s view of school. Kids are smart, and learn so much from watching their parents. Take a deep breath; it’s not all that bad. School has been great — lots of my kids’ teachers have been creative and fun while still teaching them SOL content. Kids still have recess, art and music and even field trips! Yes, my kids get stressed during SOLs, but no more so than when they have to take any big tests. Plus, I try to use SOLs to teach them how to manage their stress with exercise, getting plenty of rest, and time management — all great life skills. I also let my kids know that I value their hard work and the grades they earn, and the SOL is just something they have to get through. Remember, breathe - it will be okay. Blythe Tabor Mechanicsville
Resident enthusiastic about Toni Radler’s candidacy I jumped for joy when I saw that Toni Radler was running for the 55th District House of Delegates, representing Hanover, Caroline and Spotsylvania counties. We could not have selected a better candidate. I met Toni a couple of years ago when she wanted to assist the community (NP-STAR) in maintaining curb appeal. Because some did not have the funds for the upkeep, Toni worked with us to start a beautification program in the hopes that residents will take pride in their community if they had some assistance. Toni knocked on doors and talked to neighbors to ask what was needed for the outside of the homes to create a nice curbside presence. She called and talked to vendors see LETTERS, pg. 8

Toni actually picked up and delivered the paint, flowers and plants to families to make their homes look nice. She also helped with planting flowers. Our community was greatly appreciative. We need someone who truly cares about people regardless of their economic status and someone who would go the extra mile to help. What I’ve also known about Toni is that she is very knowledgeable about the politics here in Hanover as well as various issues of concern that may need changing. She does not mind fighting for what is right for all people and she is very equipped for a challenge. She will definitely go the extra yard. Don’t just take my word for it. Make a point to meet and talk with her during the campaign. Yvonne Walker Ashland
MLWGS grads matter I just read my Mechanicsville Local from June 19 and thought the “Hanover County Graduation Class of 2013” sec-
tion was very nice. However, the seniors who graduated from The Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies were completely omitted from this section. These 11 students went through the Hanover County Public School system and were then chosen to attend MLWGS after a rigorous application process during their 8th grade year. HCPS graciously paid for their tuition and provided transportation to and from their local high schools. The Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is listed as Course No. G59-12 in the HCPS course selection book, and HCPS benefits from all of their SOL test scores. These seniors exist and should be recognized for their accomplishments, as should all future graduating seniors at MLWGS. Here is The Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies graduating class of 2013: Corinne Casey Bowers, Atlee High School (Northeastern University); Elizabeth Sikora Brown, Atlee High School (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University); Alexa Lynn Buchin, Patrick Henry High School (VCU Arts); Seth Thomas Carroll, Atlee High School (Northeastern University); Lucy Elizabeth

Elton Wade’s retirement was announced and is fine but what about the $150,000-plus that is gone from the taxpayers. This is not a taxpayer mistake; it is a Hanover County leadership mistake. We need to replace this money out of the schools budget or, better yet, take it from the people involved and in either case, give it back to the taxpayers in cash. Our Hanover County leadership attempted to justify the double pay to Wade by saying he has 52 years working with the school system. So what? Punxsutawney Phil has been working as a weather forecaster for 123 years. The difference is that Phil does not work for the gov-

ernment so we are allowed to describe Phil’s employment as, “Phil has worked as a weather forecaster for 123 years but depending on the weather Phil only works 30 to 40 minutes per year, which has amounted to 10¼ actual days in taxpayer working years. Our leaders stuck their heads in the sand. We all know they ignored numerous newspaper articles on the subject, which allowed this crossing guard overpayment to go on for so long and one might assume that some were dependent one way or another on supervisor decisions. Salaries, benefits, budgets, job appointments, 37.5-hour work weeks or a tie-breaking vote. These things naturally would be on your mind and a normal reaction in this case for making bad decisions. In the medical field this may be called “mentally forced abandonment of values and common sense in order” to keep the peace and (in some cases) be enriched. It’s morally wrong to let it go with only a “I just want to do what’s right.” The world is full of people who now want to do what’s right; problem is, it’s always soon after they get accused/ caught. Doing what’s right would be reimbursing the taxpayers. I don’t know if a crime was committed but definitely an obvious overpayment considering it could have been #1)

The Hanover Ruritan Club recently hosted the Hanover Festival, which offered an opportunity for the community to enjoy conversation and learn about small businesses. Held on June 1 at Battlefield Park Elementary School in Mechanicsville, the event provided “something for everyone.” Vendors and businesses were invited to participate in a day of promoting their products and/or services. A Ruritan representative said the club was “proud and honored to be active promoting Hanover’s finest.”

Polegreen Church group Graduates honored debuts improved brochure Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The Historic Polegreen Church Foundation has launched its newly designed brochure that promotes the defining historical and interpretive elements of the historic site. Anchored by the words “Interpret,” “Learn,” “Visit” and “Preserve,” the brochure highlights the richness of Polegreen’s story, outlines opportunities for interpretation of that story, and serves as a visual jumping off point for visitors to the site itself as well as the website www.historicpolegreen.org. To coincide with its brochure launch, Polegreen has refreshed its website for easier
navigation for the thousands of virtual visitors to the site. The website expands on the content of the brochure to offer a detailed history of Historic Polegreen Church and its four historical mainstays — the Great Awakening, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the modern preservation story. In addition to the rich historical story, the website offers lessons plans and videos that provide an opportunity for educators in Hanover County and beyond to utilize Polegreen in the classroom. ‘Strengthening Families’ classes sign-up by July 5 Hanover County Community Services is offering a free program called Strengthening Families designed for families with children aged 10 to 14. Strengthening Families is unique because it is designed for the whole family. Parents meet to learn about adolescent development and share ideas that work, while the middle schoolers learn their own set of skills. Then the two groups join together to practice what they’ve learned and have some fun together. Younger siblings also have a supervised group of their own. Strengthening Families is a free program for Hanover families and dinner is included.
To register, call Dana Gaskin, parent educator, at 804-365-4238. Registration deadline is Friday, July 5. This program is hosted by the Community Education Team at Hanover Community Services in collaboration with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Hanover County Public Schools. “I go very few places that I don’t get asked about it, Harris said. “We’re seeing a lot of interest in that corridor. In the Atlee area, a FedEx facility that just opened employs 150 people and processes 7,500 packages an hour, Harris pointed out. Ground was just broken on a new Henrico Doctors’ Hospital clinic in the Rutland development, he added. Ashland, Harris said, has two important new businesses: a very popular Chick-fil-A and a warehouse and distribution facility for the Vitamin Shoppe. Plans are in motion to expand the Vitamin Shoppe facility to include an Internet sales division, while Republic National Distributing Company, a wine and spirits distributor, is eyeing the land next to the new Vitamin Shoppe. Mechanicsville continues to show promise in the medical sector, Harris said. A new medical office park in Bell Creek, featuring the Virginia Women’s Center, recently opened. “These facilities are drawing people from as far away as
Tappahannock, Harris said. Plans are for a new movie theater just off U.S. 60 are being discussed, although the developers have hurdles to cross before the proposal is concrete, Harris said. “We won’t have to 00 when we want to enjoy one of those nice new releases -- leave the county, Harris said with a grin. Despite all the development Harris reported, he also stressed that the county’s comprehensive land use plan, which is now in the process of being updated, will attempt to keep 70 percent of the county rural. An important provision of the proposed plan, he added, is a change in residential densities in the more suburban areas of Hanover County. By allowing two to four houses per acre rather than one to two, development can be concentrated in areas already under development. Home sales are up 13 percent, Harris said, with the median price of a new home up 12

local business community on Thursday during an update on Hanover County’s health during a meeting of the Hanover Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce. The breakfast meeting was held at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. The Lewiston Road area is active, with several development projects, Harris said. Craig Realty purchased the property that will be home to an outlet mall, while construction is starting on the Shoppes at Winding Brook II. Richmond Harley Davidson plans an expansion, and land has been purchased in the area by Wendy’s and Bojangles. Meanwhile, a new Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries office now under construction nearby will bring 300-plus employees, as well as those who need to visit the office to do business, Harris added.

Building permits are being issued at the highest rate they have been in nine years, he added, noting that some companies that had shifted to primarily renovation work are getting back into the new construction game. Sales tax revenue is projected to hit $17.1 million in fiscal year 2013, Harris said, noting that revenue was at $18 million in 2008, then dropped to a low of $15.1 million by 2010. against the real or personal property of another, knowing its falsity, is guilty of a Class 5 felony. A mechanism in this new statute permits a court to direct the clerk to release the lien, deem it invalid, and treat it as never filed. An amendment to exiting law changes from 10 to 30 days the time period for a lessee to return leased property to the lessor, after written notice, before the failure to return is prima facie (sufficient) evidence of an intent to defraud. Although not a new statue or an amendment to an existing code section, the Virginia Court of Appeals ruled the phrase, “any person who may lawfully possess a firearm and is carrying a handgun while in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and such handgun is secured in
a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel” does not require the handgun to be in locked container or compartment. “Secured” is not the same as “locked” and means “in safekeeping or custody” or “well fastened.” In the case reviewed by the court, a handgun in a closed, latched, unlocked glove box was not a violation of the concealed weapons statute. My thanks to Delegates [John] Cox and [Chris] Peace and Senators [Ryan] McDougle, [Walter] Stosch, and [Donald] McEachin for accepting my input, concerns, and recommendations as regards to proposed legislation. I am most appreciative of their willingness to listen to my thoughts and opinions. Again, this review is not
ing, he said, down to 4.4 percent in April 2013. That’s down from a February 2010 high of 7.2 percent. Before the recession, unemployment percentages hovered around 3.5 percent, Harris said. “We’re seeing more jobs out there and higher wages,” Harris said. Hanover County is expected to end fiscal year 2013 with a $7 million budget surplus, but Harris stressed that money was anticipated and planned. “It’s not $7 million that fell out of the sky,” Harris said. The money will be used in the
upcoming fiscal year, he added. When asked how the county will cope with the revenue hit caused by reducing building proffers from about $19,000 per home to about $2,300, Harris said the county will spend wisely. As money is freed up by the retirement of existing debt, he said the county will recommit those dollars to keeping up infrastructure. “You collect those dollars for capacity needs, and we really didn’t have that need,” Harris said. “The board decided to give some relief during a time of recession.”

Fire/EMS issues reminders Citizens Police Academy about Virginia fireworks laws registration underway As residents prepare to celebrate the 4th of July holiday, Hanover County Fire/EMS reminds citizens about the laws regulating fireworks and their proper use. In Virginia it is illegal to sell, buy, use, ignite or explode firecrackers, skyrockets or similar things that contain any explosives or inflammable compound or substances that explode, rise into the air or travel laterally, or fire projectiles into the air. The only fireworks legally allowed to be sold or used in Virginia are sparklers, fountains, Pharaoh’s serpents, caps for pistols and pinwheels (commonly known as whirligigs or spinning jennies). When using fireworks
of any kind, citizens should observe the following safety precautions: Always read and follow label directions. Have an adult supervise all fireworks activities. Buy from a reliable fireworks dealer. Ignite outdoors. Have water handy. Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks. Light one at a time. Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks. Never give fireworks to small children. Store in a cool, dry place. Dispose of properly. Never throw fire-
works. Never carry fireworks in your pocket. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. “All fireworks are extremely dangerous, especially in the hands of children,” said M.J. Flournoy, Hanover County Chief Fire Marshal. “Instead of handling these fireworks yourselves, it is much safer to visit the many fireworks displays available throughout Hanover County and the region. Let the professionals handle it and keep your family safe.” For more information, call the Fire Marshal’s Office at 804-365-6195. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.
Registration is underway for the 25th session of the Citizens Police Academy, which will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 10 through Nov. 12, at the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office at the government complex at Hanover Courthouse. The deadline for the academy, offered free of charge, is Monday, July 15. Hanover residents, business owners or employees who are at least 21 years of age are invited to participate. Applicants must be willing to submit to a background check. Class size is limited and applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-accepted basis. Those interested are urged to download an application, which needs to be notarized, at http://www.co.hanover.va.us/sheriff/pdf/comin-

Department of Forestry. Populations increased somewhat in Cumberland and Chesterfield counties compared to last year, but overall numbers were still relatively low, according to Dr. Chris Asaro, forest health specialist. “As always, this does not mean that localized infestations will not occur. In fact, western Hanover County has been plagued with SPB outbreaks for
the last three years, and there is a fair probability that it will be declared an outbreak county by year’s end if current trends continue,” Asaro said. An outbreak is defined as one SPB spot per thousand acres of host type (pine) per unit area, but this is a crude definition because many small spots can join together to form

Burkwood swimmers win rain-delayed meet By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com
Scores of kids, families and coaches braved the weather – including a thunderstorm-related delay – swarmed Burkwood Swim & Racquet Club last Monday when Burkwood hosted Midlothian YMCA in a James River Aquatic Club swim meet. By the time it was over, Burkwood had swept the boy’s and girl’s competitions for a 1,467-948 victory. “We were really excited about the win,” said Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber. “We had a lot of time drops on our
team. … We’re seeing a lot of these kids that are getting better as the summer progresses.” Seeber said the less experienced swimmers faced a special challenge at this meet. “The novice stroke for that [meet] was the butterfly,” Seeber said. “Some of these kids who don’t even know what the butterfly stroke is. We’ve been working with them this season and watching, especially the little ones, complete a lap successfully with the butterfly is very exciting.” The meet began in the late afternoon, with the scene – almost every bit of space within

But a storm moving across the area brought thunder and lightning and forced everyone to seek cover inside the clubhouse or their cars for about an hour. The weather delay made what was, with more than 200 swimmers at the start, going to be a long night anyway – especially considering the commute for the Midlothian team – even longer. “I think it definitely distracts a lot from the kids’ focus,” said Midlothian YMCA coach

Carnegie bestows hero award on Rohle By Randy Hallman and Joe Macenka Richmond Times Dispatch A second award for heroism — the prestigious Carnegie Medal — has come Kirk M. Rohle’s way, and once again he shakes his head about it. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced Tuesday that Rohle is among its latest group of heroes. Rohle, a Hampden-Sydney College graduate from Mechanicsville, went back into a burning house to find Ben Rogers, his football teammate, roommate and long-
time friend. Rohle, 22, now works at Loveland Distributing Co. Inc. He and three friends share a house on Patterson Avenue in Richmond. On Tuesday evening, he talked about the award as the four of them grilled fish for supper, emphasizing the feats of the 12 others honored Tuesday by Carnegie. “I look at some of the things the others did,” he said, “and I wonder if I should be mentioned with them. I’m honored to be included.” Rohle was cited for his
actions on Jan. 25, 2012. He had escaped from the burning house at Hampden-Sydney, and when he realized Rogers was still inside, he went back in climbing the stairs to look for Rogers. Rogers, who may have been wakened by Rohle’s shouts, was able to get out on his own. Rohle, nearly trapped by the smoke and flames, finally threw himself through a window to escape a second time. Rohle was hospitalized in critical condition with secondand third-degree burns over most of his body. His extensive
treatment included skin grafts. On Tuesday, as he relaxed in short sleeves on the deck of the house he shares, the grafts on his arms were prominent, still showing the grid pattern left from small holes made to allow the skin to stretch. The Carnegie award includes a $5,000 grant. Rohle said the money will help pay for further treatment. After the fire, Rohle and Rogers both missed class time at Hampden-Sydney. After early losses, Post 175 hits winning stride By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com After a couple of early losses this season, Mechanicsville Post 175 has hit a winning stride. The team took advantage of whatever breaks in the weather it could get this weekend to win four American Legion baseball victories in a three-day span. Post 175 began its weekend with a bang, hammering Colonial Heights Post 284 Pirates 15-4 Friday. Post 175 manager Eddie Gates said that hitting was important in that and an earlier 19-3 victory over the Pirates. “The approach I like to take and the philosophy I like to take is to get ahead of them quick, get ahead of them early and put the pressure on them — make them score with us,” Gates said. “We’re going to score runs. We have too good of a hitting team not to score runs, and
everybody’s hitting right now, which is a good sign.” The team did get on the board quickly and early — and often — scoring three runs in each of the first three innings to a 9-1 lead. The Pirates were able to get hits, but were not able to string enough together to make a dent in Post 175’s lead. Gates said he is getting production from the top of the batting order to the bottom. “In key situations, we’re getting the hit now,” Gates said. “In the first three games, four games maybe, we were a little suspect when we needed a key hit. Tonight we got them.” Post 175 out-hit the Pirates 16-7. Post 175 was led by Luke Bolka who went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs. Sean King likewise went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Cody Powers went
“I haven’t pitched since eighth grade at Stonewall,” King said. “I was struggling with location, but other than that, it felt pretty good.” While not able to keep up with Post 175’s offense, the Pirates managed some of their own. They were led by Gabe Togna who went 2-for3 with a double and an RBI. David Hairfield went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. The Pirates manager, Russ Gammon, refused to comment after the game, nor would he permit any of his players to comment. Post 175 did not take any time to rest, playing — and winning — two games Saturday. Post 206 makes headway despite rainouts and cancellations
Dave Lawrence/The Local
Ashland Post 206 manager Earl Steele believes his team has enough pitching in hurlers like Colby Mills (above) to make some waves in the final weeks of the American Legion season.
By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Ashland Post 206 was not sure it would have a team this year, but it is making itself felt in American Legion District 13. The team — all of the team — just needs to play more. Weather and other factors consipired to give Post 206 a bit of a break last week, with two rainouts, a cancellation and a forfeit. When it got a chance to play, however, Post 206 made it count, walloping Fredericksburg
Post 55 11-1 Thursday. The team has often played a bit shorthanded, with vacations and graduations preventing Post 206 manager Earle Steele from mustering much more than the bare minimum of players. Still, that has not hurt much. “The games that we have played, we have shown up with 11 players and winning,” Steele said. “We’ve got the right players.” The team certainly has offensive potential, managing 10 hits against Post 55. Post 206
was led by Joe Buehren with a triple and RBIs, Dylan Stowell with a double and three RBIs, and Colby Mills and Mitchell Saunders with a double apiece. Chris Estep had two hits and two RBIs and Hunter McKinney had two hits and one RBI. Steele is pretty optimistic about his pitching, too, with two main starters and plenty of relievers. Finding the right roles for them is key. “Instead of counting on all starters, I’m trying to get me two or three starters and have
me a couple of middle relievers,” Steele said. “I’ve got some excellent closers.” Like all the Legion teams this season, weather is wreaking havoc on Post 206’s schedule. As the season winds down, having plenty of pitching talent will essential in being competitive. “We want to be competitive with teams like [Post] 74, and 175 and 361” Steele said. “If we can play with the same level and intensity and motivation as they are, we have the talent to beat them teams.

Hawks golf team adds partnership with another course Contributed report sports@mechlocal.com After a six-season affiliation with the Crossings Golf Club only, the Hanover High School golf team has a new partnering facility at Hanover Country Club. Both properties are managed by Billy Casper Golf Inc. “We are excited to be a new part of such a great facility,” said Hanover golf coach Chris Pace. “The Crossings has been great to us, and now our student athletes have access to a very different course as well. Playing over at Hanover Country Club is a golden opportunity for our kids. Our area is blessed to have so many great clubs who accommodate the needs of prep golf.” Hanover Country Club is also the host for Patrick Henry High School’s and Randolph-Macon College’s golf
teams. The Crossings is also the host for Atlee High School. For the host clubs, the goal is to help grow the game. “We are happy to host multiple teams,” said Crossings head golf professional Kris Reinert. “Without prep and junior golf, we would not have a secure future for the game.” “We just want to grow the game,” said Hanover County Club head golf professional Mike King. “Young players in the game are always a great thing. We are fortunate to have members at HCC who also feel that way.” The Virginia High School League now permits year-round practice, so the Hawks looked to get started with an off-season practice regimen this spring. Both the Crossings and Hanover Country Club began hosting the Hawks off -season program this May.

it back to campus in March. Nearly finished with their degree work, the two seniors were able to walk across the stage at HampdenSydney’s commencement exercises in May 2012. Later, both finished work on their bachelor’s degrees. Both were named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Five months ago, Rohle was presented with the NCAA Award of Valor, given to recognize “courageous action or noteworthy bravery” by college athletes. Rohle said he has gotten involved in fire-safety efforts, speaking to students at Hampden-Sydney and at Virginia Commonwealth University. “I took fire safety for granted,” he said. “I’m a good example of how important it is to have multiple plans about how to get out of a fire. I think when they hear that from the point of
view of a student who was in a fire, that helps bring it home. “I’m glad to have the opportunity,” he said. “If I can help other people, it’s a good thing.” The 13 people honored Tuesday by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission included two who died in the process of their heroic acts. Kevin Roberts, 43, of Mount Lookout, W.Va., died on June 4, 2012, while trying to save four youths from drowning off Bald Head Island, N.C. The youths were caught in a strong current when Roberts swam about 250 yards into the Atlantic Ocean in an attempt to save them. Roberts drowned, but another man, Ian Tordella-Williams, 27, of Carrboro, N.C., was able to help the youths survive until they were pulled into a rescue boat. Also honored posthumously was Michael Wayne Pirie, of Oviedo, Fla., who was 18 when he died of hypothermia and other complications while
trying to save another University of Florida student who became entangled in ropes while their group was exploring a cave in Lafayette, Ga., in February 2011. Another Virginian was among the honorees. Michael Blake, 48, of Sterling, rescued a 35-year-old man from being stabbed during a domestic dispute with another man armed with a butcher knife in Sterling in October 2011. “Reading their stories just shows you what amazing things happen around us all the time,” Rohle said. The Carnegie Hero Fund was established in 1904 by Pittsburgh industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who was inspired by rescue stories from a mine disaster that killed 181 people. Based in Pittsburgh, the fund commission recognizes people who perform heroic acts in civilian life and provides financial help to those injured, or to the dependents of those killed, by their heroism.
