scar Watson would have been proud — and humbled. The Hanover Tomato Festival, which he helped launch in 1978, attracted about 37,000 people on Saturday to Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. That number was 5,000 shy of the record 42,000 set in 2009. Watson, who started the festival as a fundraiser for the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department, passed away last September. For his 34 years of service, the day was dedicated to him. His widow Sandy received a resolution from Del. Chris Peace, R-97, on behalf of the Virginia House of Delegates. also had chaired the Hanover County Fire Chiefs Staff. “As founder and president of the Hanover Tomato Festival, Chief Watson worked tirelessly to bring together community members to promote the county’s signature

crop at the annual event that draws tens of thousands of visitors,” Peace said. “A vital part of the Hanover County community, Oscar Watson touched the lives of countless individuals and created an enduring family-friendly

event that allows residents to gather together and celebrate their community spirit and enjoy the county’s delicious tomatoes.” Once the presentations honoring her husband were complete, Sandy, overcome

In a decision that was rendered null and void hours later by the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Department of Justice approved Hanover County’s application for a Voting Rights Act bailout. The word came down on Monday, June 24, a day before the Supreme Court eliminated portions of the pre-clearance requirements. Sean Davis, vice chair and Henry District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, said he was on his way to a town hall meeting regarding high speed Internet access in the eastern portion of the county when he got the news.
