Pay frozen for top scale workers By Jodi Deal jdeal@mechlocal.com In the wake of a May controversy over the salary of Elton Wade, longtime crossing guard and Cold Harbor District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, the Hanover County School Board has opted to freeze pay for any employees at the top of the division’s two salary scales – or over the top. The move came on Tuesday, July 16,

at the conclusion of a detailed review of Hanover County Public Schools’ employee compensation policy by Charla Cordle, the division’s assistant superintendent of human resources. During that update, Cordle explained how salary scales work for teachers and other employees whose positions range from cafeteria monitor to assistant superintendent. Superintendent Jamelle Wilson recommended that the School Board take action

now to freeze the pay of employees who earn the most allowed within their job’s salary scale. “We know there may be employees who are achieving above the maximum,” Wilson said. “I would imagine that would be of interest to the board.” Freezing salaries at the top of the scale Jodi Deal/The Local or higher would give staff time to continue Glenn T. Millican Jr., left, Mechanicsville District, and Robert L. Hundley Jr., Chickahominy District, were elected vice chair and studying the matter, she said. see PAY, pg. 4

Attorney Andy Condlin, photo at left, represented Hanover Village in its application for a conditional use permit allowing construction of a 12-screen movie theatre off Mechanicsville Turnpike near Lee Davis Road. Brandy Creek resident David Jennings, center photo, said the project is not right for the area, and would impact his neighborhood negatively. Scott Marshall, holding daughter Abigail, spoke against the project and thought there could be better locations for the project in Hanover County.

As a deadline requiring a local zoo operator to remove five chimps from his facility on Bultaco Road in Mechanicsville slowly approaches, the thought of separation doesn’t get any easier for owner Curtis Shepperson. “They are like family to me. It’s a difficult situation for me and my wife,” Shepperson recently
