Col. David R. Hines, sheriff of Hanover County, told the Hanover Business Council about his office’s needs and successes at Thursday’s breakfast meeting.

Citizens often tell Col. David R. Hines, Hanover County sheriff, that they see deputies everywhere they go. “That’s not true — I wish it was,” Hines told the Hanover Business Council, an arm of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, during a Thursday, July 25, breakfast meeting at Randolph-Macon College. ou’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to work at Williams Bakery — or go pretty late into the evening. The business, located in the village of Mechanicsville, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. And, while it may not be open around the clock, the schedule of baking pretty much never ends. Employees begin the

proofing process for yeastbased products in the evening, then a night baker comes in and cooks overnight. At about 3 a.m., head baker Carver Williams — a member of the fourth generation of his family in the business — rolls out of bed so he can make it in by 4 a.m. The bakery’s doors open at 6 a.m., and doughnut customers begin trickling in. Throughout the day, sales staff and managers work with customers to plan custom birthday cakes, wedding cakes

and loaves of bread in quirky creature shapes, ranging from fish to turkeys. see BAKERY, pg. 20

Office has 201 authorized officers, which technically gives the county 0.43 officers per square mile. Compare that with Richmond, he added, where the force has 12.1 officers per square mile. In 2012, Hanover County’s crime rate dropped by 9 percent to 1,055. That’s the lowest in the Richmond metro area, Hines said. Richmond’s rate was 5,132; Henrico County, 2,711; and Chesterfield County, 2,667. The rates of rapes, burglaries, motor thefts and larcenies dropped in 2012, but the county had more arsons, robberies and homicides than the previous year, Hines said. Eighteen robberies in 2012 constituted a 200 percent increase in Hanover’s robbery rate, which, Hines said, is simply not acceptable. “We’re working very hard on that right now,” Hines said. Richmond had 637 robberies in the same period, while Henrico and Chesterfield counties reported 230 and 139, respectively.

Five murders occurred in Hanover County in 2012, a 150 percent increase over the previous year. However, Hines said, due to the nature of the crimes, it would have been hard to prevent even with a much bigger force. “If anybody could have known a father was going to kill his two babies, we’d have stopped that,” Hines solemnly said. However, the sheriff noted, 80 percent of the people arrested for crimes in Hanover County weren’t residents. Increased patrols on major arteries like the U.S. 360 corridor can help catch outside criminals before they harm Hanover County citizens, Hines said, noting that more visibility efforts in recent years have brought crime rates in the more densely populated Mechanicsville area down to levels consistent with the national average. In addition to reports of departmental successes, Hines voiced concerns over his office’s ability to keep up with population growth and business expansion. Elder abuse and child abuse are on the rise, as

are concealed weapons permits and solicitor permits. The Greater Richmond Transit Company public transportation system is considering a new bus route to Hanover County, which he said is a concern for his office. Bus lines generally bring up crime rates, he continued, as do any situations that place people in close proximity. “When you put five people in your car for a family vacation, you’re going to have a fight before you get there,” Hines said. The sheriff expressed similar concerns about a new outlet mall, possible movie theater and apartment developments. Although he said he’ll personally enjoy shopping at the outlet mall, Hines also said he had checked with James City County and learned that an outlet mall there generates about 400 law enforcement calls per year. The department is authorized for 201 officers, a number that has remained unchanged since 2008. Hines said he needs at least six more. “I need more people,” Hines

said. “As the county grows, we’ll have to have increased funding.” Response times are edging up slightly as demand increases and the force stays the same size, he said. “A minute doesn’t seem like a long time until a man is trying to get in through your window,” Hines added. The department’s budget makes up about 5.2 percent of the total county budget, while all public safety functions make up about 12 percent, Hines said. He also said that the cost per capita of all aspects and functions of his department is about $199.01. “For $199.01, you can’t buy a dog for protection and feed him for a year,” Hines said. As for the movie theater, Hines expressed concerns about traffic, about creating a place where up to 2,600 people could congregate at once and about the location up for consideration on U.S. 360. That’s a lot of people, he pointed out, and a lot of cars. “These are concerns. That doesn’t mean we can’t do it,” Hines said.

Substance abuse issues addressed by HCPS

The Local goes to Paris

Photo submitted by Kensley Watkins

The Mechanicsville Local traveled with a group of students from Lee-Davis High School to London, Paris and Madrid on July 817. Over the course of 10 days, they explored all of the three major cities and experienced a trip of a lifetime. Lynn Griffey and Luanne Melton led the group.

The Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Committee of Hanover County Public Schools sponsored its annual adolescent substance abuse training. Participants included teachers, counselors, administrators, custodians, school nurses, School Resource Officers, custodians and administrative assistants. The all-day event is offered each year to keep school employees informed about current substance abuse trends, identify warning signs and be aware of resources available to help students and families who are struggling with substance abuse issues. Speakers included Mary Sisson and Susan Robertson, HCPS substance abuse and pre-

vention counselors; Dr. James Jernigan from Cold Harbor Family Medicine; Christi Adams and Judi Tomlinson from VCU’s GR-ACY (Get Real: Alcohol/Drug Choices & Consequences for Youth); Barbara Burke, LCSW, clinical director, Family Counseling Center for Recovery; and narcotics officers from the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. As one participant remarked, “This was an excellent training. I had heard great things about your program and enjoyed every aspect. The training had wonderful speakers and information from both a parent and counselor perspective.” Information submitted by Linda M. Scarborough, Hanover County Public Schools communications specialist.

Is the honeymoon over in Hanover? The initial reaction when this writer learned about the Hanover County Board of Supervisors’ decision to seek changes in the Freedom of Information Act included several words that start with the letter “i,” including irate, irritated, insulted and — impeach. Granted, the last one was “in the moment” when it’s like “I didn’t hear that right.” Unfortunately, what I read by a Times-Dispatch reporter last Wednesday evening was posted for all the world to see. A kicked in the gut feeling occurred. What where they thinking? And why is it necessary to meet without the public — the people they were elected to serve — not being made aware of any gathering of this body, whether it’s two, three, four or all seven members? The reality of this desire to meet without your knowledge should make you, the citizens of Hanover County, angry. And you should expect better government from those you put your trust in to serve. Did the word transparency vanish from the dictionaries of our supervisors? Maybe these “private” meetings will make it more convenient for them, but when was making it easy for them our concern? If they don’t have the time to serve at our will and pleasure, then that’s an issue for us when election time rolls around again — and it will. When I arrived here five years ago, I was pleasantly surprised at how harmoniously government operated. That certainly wasn’t what I had been accustomed to along my career path. How refreshing it has been to see those elected and appointed function in a manner ever mindful of the people. Has that characterization become a memory? Well, we’ll see as this FOIA issue either moves or stalls. As shocking as this action was, so too was the fact that it was a unanimous vote. We hope those elected to represent us in the Virginia General Assembly will not give this any support. If so, they too can be replaced when we go to the polls. You, the people, are urged to speak out against this — and, like us, should be angry that you are being excluded in your own future. Melody Kinser

No patriotic churches or clergy listed in area I keep wondering over and over again — where are all the patriotic churches and patriotic clergy? I recently ran across an online list of patriotic churches and patriotic clergy that is broken down by state and even though not astounded at what I found, I was surprised to find that there were very few on the list for the state of Virginia and none listed for Richmond and the surrounding areas. Yes, you saw that right, “none.” If you are a patriotic freedom lover, you can check out the list here: http://chuckbaldwinlive.com/Resources/ BlackRegiment.aspx#st-VA. Why do county students need remedial work?

are building concepts. You add additional information to the knowledge you learned. Remember the ages of these children in kindergarten are from 4 years to 5 years. They have to be 5 before Oct. 1. Months, as most know in any age group, make a difference developmentally. Algebra, etc., are being introduced in middle school now. A lot of the students that may not pass the college level placement test may have finished their math by ninth or 10th grade. Now in elementary school children can only be retained if their parents agree to it and a child cannot fail but once in elementary then they are moved on. Again, a state mandate. Classes are averaging 24 in kindergarten and upwards to 28/29 in the other elementary levels. Children with disabilities are streamlined into these classrooms. They are pulled for additional review of the material into a smaller group setting. A statement made in the article is “no student can master the material and still fail the test as claimed by school personnel.” A child with severe disabilities is given the same test referenced and may not developmentally be able to master the material to master the test. There are students that just don’t care and answer nothing. This does happen. Also, the teachers know what generally could be on the test . . . not specific information. The tests referenced are critical thinking. There are parents that do not allow their children to use critical thinking. Critical thinking is something that is learned and the first introduction is at home with parent(s). There are parents that feel they should leave it up to the schools to teach everything, including behavior and social skills. What is needed is more parent involvement. There are parents that do not look at the papers their children bring home. If a child fails a test, they have not mastered the material. Do parents go back over the paper to make sure see LETTERS, pg. 8

I would like to respond to “Why do county students need two years of remedial work?” The community college is a two-year institution. When students do not pass the math/English placement tests to take courses in either of these subjects for both a community college or a four-year university for their program plan, they have to take remedial courses that will address the specific area that they are deficient in. Four-year institutions do not offer remedial courses. The State Department of Education decides what skills are taught at what grade level. Some of these mandates are not even developmental appropriate for the age. Therefore, when it is introduced, some children developmentally are not able to handle it. Math and English both

According to Chief Douglas A. Goodman of the Ashland Police Department, National Night Out is designed to: Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;

Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; Sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organizing and fighting back; Creates a sense of security and safety for our residents.

“Please support your neighborhood by participating in National Night Out activities, Goodman said. “If you are unable to attend your neighborhood gathering, you can still participate in this event in

Also volunteer to work with children that are having problems mastering the math skills on the elementary level. Then you would see first-hand how hard it is for some children to be developmentally ready for the material. At least spend the same amount of time making a difference in a child’s life as is spent at a school board monthly meeting. Criticism can either be helpful or hurtful. I see the statement “Our school personnel are not doing the job they were hired and paid to do. This is hurtful to the teachers that are dedicated and are not in it for the money but for the love of

Col. David R. Hines, sheriff of Hanover County, is pleased to announce the recent graduation of the 10th Youth Citizens Police Academy, which was held at the Sheriff’s Office’s Range Facility. Pam Bland, owner of Sugar Cain Bakery in Mechanicsville, was a firsttime vendor for the 35th Annual Hanover Tomato Festival. She designed creations that reflected the theme of the Hanover Tomato and honored the work and dedication of Oscar Watson, who was one of the organizers of the festival with the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Bland gave the display to Watson’s wife Sandy.

Girl Scout Troop 280 recently honored Caroline Hastings with the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. She devoted her time at Highland Park, where she helped launch their new library. Much time was given to keying in books and preparing book bags for the children. Caroline said she enjoyed tutoring the children in math skills. She is a rising freshman at Hanover High School and her Girl Scout Troop is sponsored by Fairfield Presbyterian Church.

Pouring rain couldn’t deter Junior Miss Mechanicsville Claire Belfield-Henry and Tiny Miss Mechanicsville Ryley Porch, who were committed to raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network. On Monday, July 22, they braved the storm and set up an Anthem LemonAid stand outside Panera on Bell Creek Road to help put a “squeeze” on childhood cancer. All funds raised in Central Virginia through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ programs aid in the advancement of health care services for children treated at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. meeting for local government as the assembly of three or more people from any body gathering together to discuss public business,” Peterson said. He acknowledged the Act has achieved its desired results. “It effectively does a good job at what they set out to do, which is to ensure the transparency of local government.” He also pointed to what he considers a downside for the Act. “It also effectively inhibits communications.” Peterson cited as an example the process by which a staff idea finally reaches a point for board discussion. County administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. must meet with supervisors — two at a time — to avoid violating the public meeting regulations of the FOIA. If a constituent advances a concern, Peterson said he must discuss the matter with his six fellow supervisors indi-

vidually. “We sat with Mr. [Sterling] Rives (county attorney) and thought: How could this be improved while still guaranteeing the transparency of public work?” Peterson said. The board’s resolution would change the public meeting requirements to a quorum. In Hanover’s case, that’s four members, so meetings with three supervisors would be acceptable. “It’s a small amendment to the definition of a meeting,” Peterson said. “What we want to do is have this resolution sent to all our delegation at the General Assembly and share with our fellow jurisdictions.”

Megan Rhyne, executive director of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government, said her organization opposes the proposed changes. “The argument is usually that government can’t act as efficiently as possible, and that efficient government is in the public’s best interest. But, to me, efficient government is worthless if that government is not also open, accountable and transparent,” Rhyne said. “The point of FOIA is to make government transparent, not to make meeting rules easier or more convenient for boards and commissions. The public does not want more discussion in private, they want less of that.”

After a few years as an apprentice and tedious practice to perfect some of the more nuanced skills involved, Summer said she now loves coming to work. She recently created a fish cake with individual scales. Another difficult recent project was a three-dimensional perfectly round baseball cake. “I get to be creative. It’s not boring,” Summer said. “And you have a good boss,” her dad prompted. For Carver, the easiest part of the job is making pie shells, which he’s had a lot of practice doing. Candidate expresses opposition to supervisors’ disclosure limits (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Toni Radler, Democratic candidate for the 55th District House of Delegates seat in the Virginia General Assembly. The article appears in its entirety as written by Radler.) Despite the obvious need for more disclosure in Virginia politics after the governor’s fall from grace involving Star Scientific, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors wants to do even more to limit disclosure. They voted to ask the General Assembly to change state public meeting laws to allow them to meet and conduct business in secret. As delegate for the 55th district, Toni Radler said she would oppose every effort to limit access to public information and she would vote against any bill that comes forward limiting public access. Radler made the comments after the Hanover Board of Supervisors voted to ask the General Assembly to change the state’s Freedom of Information Act so that public notice is no longer required when three members meet to discuss public business. “Citizens are already left out of the board’s

decision making process. Now they want more ways to keep the public in the dark! It’s just another way of holding ‘legal’ secret meetings. It’s incredible, she said. As an example of limited citizen input on crucial issues, Radler pointed to the Hanover board’s recent elimination of proffers. “Supervisors eliminated proffers during the holidays without one public hearing. The citizens were never once heard from concerning the elimination of $52 million in proffers that were slated to be used to fund school buildings, fire stations, police stations and libraries, she said. “Just as we are on the cusp of a huge building boom, supervisors eliminated the only funding source for the infrastructure to handle new residents slated to go into homes on the more than 4,000 lots zoned for construction. And it was done without one public hearing — not one public hearing before the proffers committee, not one public hearing before the board, she added. “Now the supervisors want to go even further and eliminate notice of meetings of board members.

Post 175 earns another trip to state tournament By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Mechanicsville Post 175 had a tougher trail to follow in claiming the American Legion District 11 baseball championship this year, but, as the Legion state tournament began Tuesday at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex, a tougher road earlier might not be a bad thing. Post 175 showed it could be beat—but that it could also fight—losing to Lakeside Post 125 14-13 in an 11-inning dogfight at L.C. Bird last Wednesday. But Post 125, coming from the loser’s bracket, had to beat Post 175 twice, and that proved too much to hope for. Post 175 jumped to a 2-0 lead after a

two-run home run by Luke Bolka in the second inning and held on for a 3-2 victory for the district title and a berth in the state tournament. Last year, Post 175 swept through the regular season and District 11 championship undefeated and entered the state tournament facing a lot of pressure as the team to beat. “I’m kind of glad the undefeated part got over with quick,” Post 175 coach Eddie Gates said. Mechanicsville won its first game of the season, but lost its next two – to West End Post 361 and to South Richmond Post 137 – before starting a win streak that lasted until the final game of the regular season, Heights Post 284 Buccaneers. that it could battle back. deficit after the first inning, and still trailed by five runs, 8-3, after four. But Post 175 kept scrapping back, with big seventh (four runs) and ninth (three runs) innings to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Both teams traded runs in the 10th inning. Mechanicsville returns to Tournament of State Champions By Paislee Winkler For The Mechanicsville Local Mechanicville National Little League returned for the second straight year to the Tournament of State Champions [TOSC] at Mitch Stadium in CeredoKenova, W. Va. The tournament began with pool play Saturday. The four teams with winning records after pool play advance to the tournament semifinals on Tuesday. The championship game will be held today. “It has been a whirlwind,

“said Mechanicville Nationals coach Brian Colgin, “It has been community effort.” Mechanicville won its first game Saturday in the largest comeback in tournament history, 11-7 against Oconee County, Ga. Georgia started strong scoring all of its seven runs in the first and second innings, but Mechanicville rallied in the bottom of the fifth with six runs. with the help of a double play to stifle Georgia’s offense, it steadily pulled away the

remainder of the game. Mechanicsville pitcher Caydem Richardson stepped on the hill in the second inning and shut down Oconee County for the remainder of the game. “It’s something that will be in the history books for a little while,” said Colgin, “it has got our team a little excited.” In its second game Sunday, Mechanicsville National likewise found itself in a big hole early, but this time could not overcome hard-hitting Keystone, Fla.. Keystone scored

seven runs in the first inning and tallied seven more over the next three innings. Despite a five-run rally in the third, Mechanicsville could not close the gap. Colgin hoped to avoid getting into such a deep hole again in its third game against the West Virginia champion Monday. Colgin told his team ”... not to give up so many runs in the first inning,” he said.. “We want to play a traditional baseball game.”

Mechanicsville teams ready for GRAL season showdown By Paislee Winkler For The Mechanicsville Local The Greater Richmond Aquatic League will hold its championship meet this weekend. Qualified boys and girls swimmers ages 5 to 18, will compete in more than 100 events over the course of the three-day meet, which begins Friday. All 34 teams, from four league divisions will compete together. Hanover’s 14 teams have been busy getting ready for the event. Ashland coach Kevin Trent said that preparing for the champion will be like the continuous training with a focus on speed and individual. “For the last week we are going try to take down the yard-

age a little bit, add more speed ... in the workout and try to have more fun with it,” said Trent.“I try to look at it as individual swimmer improvement, instead of [looking at] who we are trying to beat.” This season is milestone for Pebble Creek, with more than 50 swimmers qualifying for the meet. Such a huge turnout is a first for the Pebble Creek coach Justian Murphy, who has

guided Pebble Creek since 2005. The team’s 9-10 year olds have all three relays full of qualified swimmers, another first. “I am looking for lots of best times and good participation from our swimmers,” Murphy said. “Hopefully we can make a good place in the competition.” This is the first time in 10 years that the GRAL championships will be held in the Richmond area. The meet, which will take place at the Greater Richmond Aquatics Partnership — Collegiate School Aquatic Center — in Chesterfield County, has tyically been held in Northern Virginia. “It’s great for the swimmers,” Trent said. “It’s not a long drive and you do not have to book a hotel room.”

Tension in the dugout did not help. Gates addressed the issue before Thursday night’s game. “They were a little tense and kind of pointing fingers at each other. That’s not our game. We don’t normally do that,” Gates said. “I had a little talk with them last night and before we had our [batting practice] today I had another talk with them saying, “Guys, it’s a team effort out there. Let’s show them what kind of team we can be.” The talk worked. The team was more cohesive and relaxed. Getting out to an early lead on Bolka’s home run helped. “It sets a good mood for our team, especially,” said Bolka, who was drafted by the

Cincinnati Reds in June but decided to stick with his original plan to attend East Carolina University instead. “When the games get tight, we’ve got a couple of players who, you know, are not afraid to say something to each other, and that can be a good and a bad thing. But we’re pretty strong as a team.” Bolka said the previous night’s loss might have been a good thing. “We were 2-0 I think – maybe 3-0 – against that team in the regular season, so [the loss] was kind of a big shock,” Bolka said. “I guess it kind of straightened us up. Maybe we were not working as hard as we should have been, kind of, coming into the game.” Whatever the cause of the change in fortune in the District 11 final, Post 175’s defense over-

came a somewhat shaky effort Wednesday with a stellar outing Thursday. A key example was on a play that should have allowed Post 125 to tie the game in the eight inning. Shortly after Post 125’s Royce Woolfolk – who had singled in a run in the sixth inning – homered to cut Post 175’s lead to one run, 3-2, Charlie Yorgen bounced a double off the right field wall that should have give Wesley time to score from first. But Post 175 right fielder Cody Powers fielded the ball cleanly, quickly hitting his cutoff man, second baseman Sean King – and King fired a strike to catcher Bryant Lowry that beat Steelman to the plate by inches. “You work on those kind of things,” Gates said. “It’s the little things that you don’t think will ever work … for you – boom!”

Cavaliers pick assistant for top football coach post By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com When King William began looking for a new head football coach to replace Jim Henderson, who left earlier this summer to take over at Monacan, it did not have to look very far. One of Henderson’s assistants, Dylan DeHart, was ready and waiting. DeHart, who grew up in Radford and graduated from Emory and Henry, grew up in a football family – his father and uncle were both high school assistant coaches. The former linebacker found himself on the other side of the ball at King William, where, as wide receiver coach, he appropriately spent his time studying the field from above. “I was up top – in the press box,” DeHart said. His knowledge of and role in planning King William’s passing attack was a key factor in his promotion after Henderson left. “I talked with Coach Henderson when he decided to leave,” DeHart said. “I thought it would be a good opportunity

for me to step in because he’s taught me a whole lot about this offense – we run a Tony Franklin System and our kids are big believers in it. So we didn’t want to change to a new offense so late in the year when all these other teams have been doing 7-on-7 practices.” The Tony Franklin System is a type of fast-tempo spread offense that is becoming popular with a number of colleges and high schools. With a complexity derived from its many possible combinations, it pays to have a coach already familiar with it. “You’re really just trying to play fast and confuse your opponents,” DeHart said. “You’re hitting a lot of plays out of multiple formations.” Familiarity with the offensive scheme wasn’t the only selling point in DeHart’s favor. Over the past two years, he has built up a good rapport with his players and fellow coaches. “The kids, they don’t have to really get to know somebody new,” DeHart said. “They already have that trust with you and that relationship. I continue to build it every day. I try to do

something fun to keep the kids coming out here. I’ve been very proud of them so far this year. I think we’re going to have a very good season.” But DeHart faces a challenge, replacing quarterback Freeman McPherson. DeHart referred to McPherson, a first-team All-

Region A player and participant in this summer’s Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star game, graduated last year and is expected to be replaced by Jacob Jones. “Freeman McPherson, he was a stud. He had a cannon for an arm,” DeHart said of

McPherson. “I think a lot of people are underestimating Jacob Jones. He’s an extremely intelligent kid. We talk offense daily. … He’s going to be a really good quarterback because he knows how the offense works and he knows coverages. … He’s very football minded. He

may not have a cannon for an arm, but he has a good arm and he puts the ball in the right spot.” DeHart is learning to cope with the increased responsibility of being the head coach. “Sometimes, as I’m falling asleep, I start thinking about, ‘Well, you know, I’ve got this I’ve got to do now. … I need to e-mail this person, I’ve got to get in touch with this parent.’ It’s something on a daily basis.” But at least one potential competitor thinks DeHart has what it takes – Goochland head coach Joe Fowler, whose Bulldogs have knocked King William out of the Virginia High School League state playoffs the past two years. “I’ve known Dylan since he was a little kid,” Fowler said. “His uncle was one of my high school football and track coaches. I’ve know his family, well, the town we’re from, everybody knows everybody. “Dylan is a great young man. He’s going to be a great coach, and he’s definitely a great catch for King William. They’re going to be very happy that they have him in the fold.”

Burkwood finishes strong in JRAC swim, dive meets By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Burkwood’s swimmers and divers got all wet last week, but nobody minded. Both teams competed in their respective James River Aquatic Club meets, and both exceeded expectations, with the swimmers finishing in eighth place in the league swim championships and qualifying for a move into the JRAC’s top division and the divers finishing second in the dive championships by a mere half a point. Burkwood’s swim team was

hoping for finish in the top half of the 20-team field in the swimming championships held Thursday and Friday at NOVA Aquatics of Virginia. The race to the top was close, with Southampton barely edging Westwood for the team title, 1,557 to 1,526. “It was the closest meet that I remember,” said Southampton head coach Mike Peters. “The kids really pulled through and … came together. It is a credit to both teams – Westwood and Southampton – that the meet came down to just a few swims.

Rounding out the top 10 was Kanawha (1,096 points), Country Club of Virginia (1,038), Avalon (652), Ridgetop (586), Three Chopt (538), Burkwood (458), Hermitage Country Club (442) and Midlothian YMCA (426). More important to swimming coach Karen Seeber was the number of time drops by her swimmers in the meet. Forty-one of the 70 Burkwood swimmers set personal records. Twenty-six finished in the top three of their respective events. “I’m excited. We had a lot of time drops, so one of our goals

was met,” Seeber said. “They came in. They swam well. It was awesome. They did a great job.” Three Burkwood swimmers won their events: Ross Newton in the boys’ 13-14 100-meter individual medley, Alec Barney in the boys’ 15-18 50 backstroke and Jaelyn Jones in the girls’ 11-12 50 butterfly. Jones also finished as the top swimmer in her age division overall, with second-place finishes in the 50 backstroke and 50 freestyle and a third-place finish in the 50 breaststroke. run course; help monitor athlete flow; help at the finish line; etc.,” Reid said. Anyone interested in helping can contact Reid, kevin@ setupevents.com, or can register through the event website, www. setupevents.com/goochland. Volunteers are an important part of this event, adding to the uniqueness of the Goochland triathlon. “The most unique thing about this event is our volunteers,” Reid said. “At one of our run course aid stations ... voted the best volunteers the last two

years ... a team of residents from Virginia Correctional Facility for Women will again be with us.” Reid said the event wouldn’t be possible without all of the community support it receives. “The facility, the staff, and the residents are important to our community ... this is about the community and integrating all of us into an enjoyable morning of sport/exercise,” Reid said. Although the race is only its third year, it is gaining a reputation as one of the circuit’s most

fun and fan-friendly events. “This year we have competitors from across the state; Tidewater to the Blue Ridge,” Reid said. “We also have competitors from North Carolina, Maryland, and D.C. We’ve had a participant as young as 8 complete the course and as old as 77 ... experienced and novice competitors alike,” Reid said. Mechanicsville resident Gene White, 79, has been the oldest participant in the event in both its first two years. And that’s one of the major draws to the Goochland event,

the ability to draw competitors from all levels of competition, from the seasoned athlete to the first time participant. “For many this event is their first and/or only triathlon they’ll complete,” Reid said. “Two years ago we had a Paralympic team participate. This year we have a team registered comprised of members of the county board of supervisors and the school board.” Supervisor Manuel Alavarez will head one of those community-based teams, with chairman Ken Peterson joining him. “Ken Peterson and I are planning to enter a team,” Alvarez said last week. “However, School Board Chairman John Wright, who was going to do the swim portion has decided to run the entire triathlon, so we are looking for a swimmer to join us.” Alvarez also noted the significance of the Goochland race and its appeal to many skill levels. “Unlike an Ironman distance triathlon, the Goochland event is a “sprint triathlon” with a 300 yard swim, 12.5 mile bike ride and 5K run, so it is a great introduction to the sport,” he said. “It’s a great event for a first timer and I’m hoping we’ll see a good group of Goochlanders running it again.” Other Goochland public figures are planning to complete the event including Sheriff Jim

Burkwood’s other third-place finishers were Caroline Blaser (girls’ 9-10 100 individual medley), Elizabeth Patina (girls’ 8-under 25 backstroke), Kelsey McGrath (girls’ 9-10 50 breaststroke), Jordan Fox (girls’ 11-12 50 breaststroke), Colin Wilson (boys’ 1112 50 breaststroke), Julia Ann Wilson (girls’ 9-10 50 freestyle), Charles Adams (boys’ 9-10 50

freestyle) and Morgan Steiner (girls’ 15-18 100 freestyle). The strong result qualifies Burkwood for a move from JRAC’s middle division to its top division – a ranking determined by the overall performance of the team’s swimmers. “Last year we were in the top division and moved down,” Seeber said. “This year we were in the middle division and did very well, so it looks like we’re

going to be moving up.” The JRAC diving championships were held at Avalon earlier that week on Monday and Tuesday. With 23 of 25 of its divers scoring, Burkwood finished second to Kanawha, 168 to 167.5. The rest of the top five teams in combined score was Ridgetop (117 points), Country Club of Virginia (112) and Avalon (105). Burkwood won the X division – the high-

est, followed by the Regular and Novice divisions – besting Kanawha 78-72. Five Burkwood divers won their events: Ashley Zicafoose (girls’ 10-11 X division), Taylor Keeler (girls’ 14-15 Regular), assistant coach Kate Hundley (girls’ 16-18 Novice), Jaime Keeler (boys’ 12-13 Regular) and T.J. Warren (boys’ 14-15 X). Burkwood had five second-

By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent Goochland is prepping for its third annual triathlon, an event that is quickly becoming a favorite among seasoned athletes and novice runners and bikers. The courthouse will come alive early on the morning of August 10 as athletes from throughout the region converge on Goochland for one of the circuit’s most unique courses. “Goochland is the perfect setting for an event of this type with support from all areas of the county,” said Kevin Reid, this year’s race coordinator with Setup Events. “The run course is a mixture of pavement and grass as [J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College] allows us to use their fields and facility for an exciting and spectatorfriendly two-loop run course,” he added. The race features a 300-yard swim at the Y, a 12.5-mile bike race and a 5K run through the courthouse. Cutoff for race registration is August 7. Volunteers are still needed for the all phases of the event. “Volunteers are needed on event day, Aug 10, beginning at 5:15 a.m. for parking and beginning at 5:30 for many other positions including; monitor swim course, bike course, or

Daniel Edwards of Midlothian is rocking and rolling during the run portion of the Goochland Sprint Triathlon last year. There is still time to register to either race or volunteer for this year’s installment of the event, which will be held on Aug. 10 at the Goochland YMCA.

Agnew, Superintendent James Lane and assistant superintendent Peter Getz. Adding to the community importance is the charitable aspect of the event. “The proceeds from the Triathlon benefit the Goochland Y and the Free Clinic, so participating is not just good for our health, it also helps the greater community,” Alvarez said. Reid realizes the importance of the causes benefited by the race. “This event was started to benefit our charity partners; the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program, the Goochland Free Clinic, and the Goochland YMCA Bright Beginnings Program,” Reid said. Reid has daughters who spent five weeks in a newborn intensive care unit and knows the importance of the care they provide to newborns. “My daughters spent five weeks in the NICU, and without the support of the MOD NICU program, I don’t know that my wife and I would have come through it as well adjusted as we did,” Reid said. Reid hopes it will be a fun, rewarding day for participants, volunteers and spectators. “We want this to be a great experience for everyone,” Reid said. “The more people who can enjoy the event the better.”
