U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7, at left, talks with a group of culinary arts students at the Hanover Center for Trades and Technology as local elected officials and media representatives look on.
Although Wednesday, Sept. 4, was only the second day of school, the Hanover Center for Trades and Technology was buzzing with activity. As U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R7, the Hanover County School Board and Board of Supervisors,

everal local businesses are joining forces to sponsor a fundraiser to benefit “Sabrina’s Boys,” Aiden and Heath, from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Cullen’s Cove at 6233 Mechanicsville Turnpike in Mechanicsville. Their mother, Sabrina Maters, was killed by their father, Ryan P. Markham, on June 2, 2012, in what was described as
an act of domestic violence. Since her death, the community has embraced the two boys, who were 7 and 3 when they lost their mother. At that time, an account was set up at Village SABRINA MATERS Bank at 6127 Mechanicsville Turnpike. All Village Bank
locations have helped by accepting contributions. According to Kristy Verlander, who is helping organize Saturday’s event, the sponsors are A New Length Salon and Day Spa, Main Street Realty and River City Diner. Live music will be provided by Proverbial, Perfect Mistake, P.J. Bottoms and The Flying Graysons. Verlander also said that raffles will see SABRINA’S, pg. 4

Hanover County Public Schools superintendent Jamelle Wilson and a team of local media toured the school, cosmetology students were practicing “updos,” building trades students clambered on ladders hammering a door frame, and automotive students crowded around an engine trainer. Students enthusiastically
showed Cantor around their workshops as the rest of the tour group looked on. “What kind of car do you have?” Cantor asked Patrick Henry High School junior Watson Miller, an automotive student. “Actually, I have two,” Miller see CANTOR, pg. 21

Aiden and Heath, the sons of Sabrina Maters, will benefit from a fundraiser to be held on Saturday at Cullen’s Cove. A fund for “Sabrina’s Boys” was established soon after her untimely death last year. The Maters family asked that the photo at left be used to ensure the boys’ privacy without showing their faces.

12 years later: It was a day we’ll never forget Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, started like most days: Grabbed the phone and called the newsroom for the morning check-in. As editor of a daily newspaper in southwestern West Virginia, I worked evenings since we had a midnight press time. So, the daily routine was to call the office as soon as I awoke. News editor Audrey Carter asked if I had the TV on and I said no. “Turn it on,” she replied. “What channel?” I asked. “It doesn’t matter. Turn on the TV.” Like the rest of the nation, I watched in horror as networks repeated the images of those planes slamming into the World Trade Center. Oddly enough, that morning I awoke not long after that first strike. The attacks had just begun with New York City, the Pentagon and a flight over Shanksville, Pa., falling victim to evil incarnate. Washington, D.C., was the target of the commercial flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. Audrey already made assignments and she and senior writer Charlotte Sanders had leads on community natives in NYC and at the Pentagon. With the exception of the lead story, which came from the Associated Press, we had coverage with local ties. Twelve years later, it’s one of those days that seems like yesterday. The newsroom was buzzing when I arrived within an hour of that initial call. It amazes me how those of us in this business go into a particular mode of operation in times of crisis. We do what we do so that you will receive as much information as possible. And that was the focus on that tragic day. The television in my office attracted staff members in to check the latest developments throughout the day. There was a solemn pall over the entire operation that day. I still have that edition, with what was probably one of the largest headlines I’ve ever written about our great nation being attacked. The date Sept. 11 is a reminder that we had to accept the reality that we are vulnerable and the way we go about our day-to-day lives changed. We need to take a moment today to remember those who lost their lives that day 12 years ago. And we must give thanks to the many firefighters, emergency personnel, law enforcement officers and citizens who showed how Americans unite in the face of adversity. It’s about who we are. Resident addresses impact of movie theater on community
On several occasions, and one in particular, I have witnessed people pulling to the side of the road and stopping to show respect for funeral processions. On Wednesday, Aug. 28, I was at the stoplight of Lee Davis and Pole Green Roads. A Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office deputy stopped traffic to allow a funeral procession through the stoplight. There was a gentleman tending the grass at the Exxon station that afternoon around 1:45 p.m. He stopped weed-eating, put his tools down, and stood for the entirety of the procession. How commendable that we have people living in our community with such character. I wish I could’ve gotten the name on his business truck. From what I could tell, it was a white pickup with green lettering. I remember driving in a procession for my grandfather several years ago and a certain car with beach-themed license plates (I remember them, actually, to this day but will not divulge) weaving in and out of the caravan of family and friends. I’m glad I now have a more positive image to replace that maddening memory from long ago. My regret is that, being in a rush as so many people are, I myself couldn’t take the time to thank him in person. We all have something to learn from this person. Delane Markley Hanover
Many of you may have seen articles regarding the proposed movie theater for Mechanicsville Turnpike. What you may not realize is how this theater will impact you and your district. You might not live near Mechanicsville or even shop here all that often. However, the impact of this theater is larger than you might imagine. On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, released his Public Safety Impact Statement to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. In it he addresses the impact of county growth on the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, including that of the movie theater. Our supervisors are treating this issue as if it only affects one neighborhood. Not only will it impact all of the Hanover region that uses the Mechanicsville Turnpike corridor, but it also will impact residents living in the other districts. Simply put, to address the growing demands on the Sheriff ’s Office, one of two things will need to happen: Either more funding for resources and additional staff or they will be pulling patrols from other areas into the more densely populated areas around Mechanicsville and Ashland. Read: fewer patrols for your area or higher taxes. Please stand with your neighbors in Mechanicsville and take a stand in opposition to this theater. Wilson is a genius at speaking nonsense but the major offense was the statement she made regarding vocational students: business partners “have really embraced those children that go to that school.” This thinly veiled derogatory comment should be rewarded with reprimand. Just imagine if God was first After reading about another murder, this one a drive-by, in the Richmond-Petersburg area by an accused man that’s broken the law and been arrested for seven separate crimes, it occurred to me, if you will, just imagine a United States that still put God first, that was run by honest politicians (ones that

tried to do what they promised in their campaign speeches). Just imagine a country occupied by good, hard-working, honest citizens that came here for a better life, that came here voluntarily and not brought here by force. Just imagine safely walking the streets at night (at any hour), not having to lock your car or doors to your house and instead of overcrowding jails and prisons, there would be fewer needed, and even they would probably not be filled. I too have a dream. Just imagine. Don McAbee Mechanicsville

Authorities are investigating a message scrawled in a bathroom at King William High School that threatens to “kill everyone.” The message was brought to the attention of the school’s principal about 10 a.m. Thursday,
said King William County schools Superintendent Mark Jones. Officials said they are taking the message seriously and will be adding security at county schools today and next week. The message, written in a boy’s bathroom at the school, says, “I will kill everyone.” Written below the threatening words is Monday’s
date. Beside the message is a crudely drawn symbol that authorities said they do not recognize. King William sheriff’s Lt. Tim Hixenbaugh said he has sent a picture of the symbol to law enforcement officials nationwide to see if anyone recognizes it. Authorities on Thursday were

Theater opponents urge residents to attend session
Col. David R. Hines’ statement cautioned the Board of Supervisors about approving new growth without addressing the impact on the Sheriff ’s Office. In regard to the theater, the Impact Statement indicated that in regard to crime, “an anticipation of increased law enforcement response is expected . . . there could be an increase in calls for service with the potential to impact nearby neighborhoods and businesses . . . “ Hines also cautioned the Board of Supervisors about traffic congestion and accidents, stating “The Sheriff ’s Office would discourage any initiative that would add to the current vehicular congestion at the Lee Davis Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike intersection or limit ease of access to travel corridors for nearby residents.” Residents are urged to attend the meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday. The vote will be preceded by a public hearing in which residents can make a statement to the board. The Board of Supervisors meets in the Board Room at Hanover County Administration Building at 7516 County Complex Road in Hanover. (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Deborah Wetlaufer, an Information Technology systems analyst and resident of Travellers Run subdivision.) The Hanover Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, to vote on the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the proposed movie theater at Hanover Village Shopping Center on the Mechanicsville Turnpike. Residents are urged to contact their supervisor about this plan and to attend the Wednesday meeting. Opposition to the theater project has grown and local residents organized an effort to block the plan, citing concerns with increased crime and traffic. The group adopted the motto “Not Here, Not Now.” Debbie Wetlaufer, one of the organizers, explained, “We are not opposed to growth. But, we do expect responsible growth. We are concerned that the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors have not done their due diligence when considering the project. This is a terrible location for a movie theater considering that it backs up to a residential area and the roads simply are not able to accommodate large volumes of traffic. There are many issues that need to be mitigated.” These concerns were echoed in a recently released “Public Safety Impact Statement.”

continue to grow over the next few years. “That’s one of the hottest needs right now, Wilson said. The Trades and Technology Center features a large new HVAC lab, which was bolstered by a $10,000 grant from the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, tools donated by Brandywine Realty and Trust and new equipment donated by Trane. As more students get internships and high-paying jobs, Wilson said she expects word of mouth to spread. The center has partnerships with 38 local businesses and the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s Hanover Business Council. Employers from across the Richmond metro area put on job fairs for students, Roerink said. And, Wilson noted, Business Council representatives coach students on concepts every bit as important as their trade knowledge by helping them fill out job applications and conducting mock job interviews. Students don’t just get experience in the classroom – they interact with the community. Kaci Jones, a cosmetology student, told Cantor that in addition to providing their services at a discount to the public – schedules and prices are on the center’s website – she and her classmates often visit Covenant Woods Retirement Community to do manicures, pedicures and hair for the resi-
dents there. “The leadership at this school has allowed that to really blossom, Wilson said. “The metro region is supporting what we’re doing here in Hanover, and I think that’s part of the success – everybody’s at the table. Cantor told the local leaders that job training is a skill he’s been tackling in Washington, D.C., particularly as it pertains to the chronically unemployed. “I have a real focus on making sure we can produce more jobs and have more people getting back to work, Cantor said. That’s the point of the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills Act (The SKILLS Act for short), which passed in March to help streamline federal workforce training programs. The Act allows local and regional workforce training agencies design programs that work in practice at the local level, “not what Washington says, Cantor said. Cantor also said that the Hanover Trades and Technology Center has demonstrated a commitment to giving students options. Wilson agreed. “Career and technical education is a viable alternative, but not the only option, she said. Learn more about the programs offered at the Hanover Center for Trades and Technology online at hanover. k12.va.us/hctt.

said. Both, a Chrysler Sebring and a 1980 El Camino, are giving Miller plenty of practice to hone his automotive skills before he hits the workforce. Danielle Westbrook of LeeDavis High School told Cantor that she puts her culinary arts training to work at her job making crepes for a local food truck. Roerink added that she recently placed fourth in the state in a culinary arts competition. Westbrook said she hopes to be a chef one day, while Molly Singleton of Patrick Henry High has set her sights on using what she’s learning to open a restaurant with her brother and a friend. Michael Inge, Atlee High School, said he has other plans. “When I get out of here I’m trying to get on a cruise ship, Inge told Cantor with a grin. Students at the school are getting more than skills, principal Justin Roerink said. Graduates walk away with industry certifications that can snag them high-paying jobs right off the bat, and the center’s partnerships with metro area businesses can connect them with those jobs. Take, for example, the culinary arts graduate who got a job right out of high school earning $18 an hour at Sabra, a company that makes hummus and other Middle Eastern style foods in Chesterfield County. “We’ve put processes into place that help us focus on kids who want to be here, Wilson said. “We want the kind of student who wants to commit to a three-year program. Of the county’s 6,000 high school students, about 420 take classes at the Center for Trades and Technology, which opened in 2008. The center has the capacity to serve more, Wilson said. The most popular programs are automotive, cosmetology and culinary arts, although Wilson said she thinks the HVAC program is going to

Blue Jays buzz-cut Yellow Jackets in season debut By Jim Ridolphi For The Mechanicsville Local In certain situation, a small amount of experience can make all the difference. After racking up 35 first downs in a 38-14 victory over host Randolph-Macon Saturday, Johns Hopkins quarterback Robbie Matey said that philosophy holds especially true when it comes to his offensive line. “Two pre season All Americans, an academic All American from last season, a first Centennial Team at left guard and a sophomore nobody has seen yet who’s pretty good,” Matey said. “You put those five on the front line, and we’re going to be good.” Collectively, they didn’t disappoint as Matey had ample time to choose receivers as he tossed two touchdowns in a 318-yard passing performance. A solid rushing performance from Blue Jay running back J.D. Abbott complemented the Jays’ aerial attack, resulting in a more than 500- yard offensive performance. The offensive line’s experi-

ence, a pace that at some points resembled an Oregon Ducks’ drive and Matey’s leadership added up to an insurmountable challenge for the young Yellow Jackets in their season opener in Ashland. Junior quarterback Zac Naccarato threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns. But, lack-
ing a strong running attack, Naccarato’s performance was not enough to thwart the ballcontrolling Blue Jays. “We shot ourselves in the foot offensively,” Naccarato said. “The offense didn’t do a good job of keeping our defense off the field in the first half. We just couldn’t get anything going.”
That first half began well for the Yellow Jackets, who capped a game-opening drive with a 10-yard touchdown strike from Naccarato to Matt Williamson. “We had a great kick return to open the game, and a couple of good plays to drive us down the field and we got on top early,” Naccarato said.

Rogers just wants to help Hokies By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com For those who know former Hanover High School standout Sam Rogers, it is no surprise he’s made a strong impression at Virginia Tech. Rogers, who graduated from Hanover in May, turned down scholarship offers from two small colleges, Bucknell and St. Francis, to try his fate as a walkon at Virginia Tech. He earned the starting spot at fullback for the Hokies and began his playing career in a marquee matchup – the nationally televised contest against No. 1-ranked
Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Aug. 31. “Obviously, I was trying to enjoy every bit of it I [could] when I got there, and just taking it in and just realizing how blessed I am and being real grateful for the whole situation,” Rogers said in an interview Sunday. “Just going out there and having fun, that was the biggest thing.” Rogers has always been driven to win, and that fire burns just as strongly in Blacksburg as it did here in Mechanicsville. Against Alabama, it did not
matter how highly the Crimson Tide was ranked, nor how strong the program has been in recent years. For Rogers, the 3510 loss to Alabama stung. “Losing, no matter who it’s against, always sucks. It’s not fun,” Rogers said. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing Atlee, PH or Alabama.” Rogers has demonstrated his versatility in his first two games for Virginia Tech. He’s blocked a lot. He ran the ball – once for a three-yard gain – against Alabama and caught a 12-yard pass in a 45-3 victory over Western Carolina Saturday.
Randolph-Macon coach Pedro Arruza said a miscue in the second drive of the day – a holding call that negated a drive-sustaining run – changed the momentum of the game. “I’m not saying we lost the game because of that, but I thought that was a key play,” Arruza said. Afterward, the Blue Jays scored 24 unanswered points Arruza said opening against a talented team like Hopkins has its own set of risks and rewards. “They’re a good team with a lot of experience,” Arruza said. “It was a good test for us. Obviously, we have to get a lot better. I think we’ll be a better team next week and the week after.” The coach said a Blue Jays’ roster that exuded experience was a tough match-up for his young team – many sophomores and some freshmen fill starting positions on RandolphMacon’s squad. Even with the loss, Arruza still likes his team’s chances as the schedule progresses. “We did not play well up front. I think there is poten-

We need to learn to overcome our mistakes and get more fundamentally sound. We shot ourselves in the foot too many times tonight, too many bad plays on special teams.” Hanover (1-0) will be in action again Friday, with a home game against J.R. Tucker (0-2). Patrick Henry (0-1) will play another in-county rival with a visit to Atlee (1-0), which defeated Deep Run 70-14 Friday.

Hanover powers past Patrick Henry in opener By Jacob Downer For The Mechanicsville Local Any head coach is happy to settle for a win in his career debut, especially if it comes against a cross-county rival. Hanover’s Derek Stoudt got much more than just a victory from his Hawks on Friday night, as a dominant performance by the defense led the way to a 22-0 shutout win over Patrick Henry. The Patriots amassed just 119 yards total offense. Quarterback Chesdin Harrington was sacked six times, with two each coming from Brennan Gray and Blake Johansen. Johansen also blocked a punt, and the Hawks’ special teams forced two turnovers. Friday night’s contest marked the debut game for both head coaches. Stoudt’s tenure begins after eight years under Josh Just, who became Hanover’s activities director on July 1. Clark most recently coached the Patrick Henry junior varsity team in 2010 and 2011, and replaces Sam Hart, who stepped down last spring to concentrate on baseball for the Patriots. Stoudt was visibly pleased following his team’s victory, and was especially happy with Johansen’s performance, which he called the sophomore’s “coming-out party.” “Overall I am very, very happy with our performance tonight,” Stoudt said. “We started fast and continued to

play aggressively throughout. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the defense played, and with the plays we made on special teams.” The Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as senior quarterback Korbin Borbonie fed sophomore wideout Jalen Elliot on a perfectly executed tunnel screen for a 31yard touchdown. The Hawks missed the ensuing extra point but held a 6-0 lead with a 10:17

left in the first quarter. Johansen came up with the first of his many big plays on Patrick Henry’s next drive just two minutes later, blocking the Patriots’ punt and setting the Hawks up inside field goal range. Sophomore Austin Garrison converted the opportunity, sneaking a 23-yard field goal just inside the right upright to increase the Hanover lead to 9-0. The Hawks would add to
their lead in the second quarter. Following a Patrick Henry punt, junior running back Brooks Combs busted a 35yard run through the heart of the Patriot defense to set up a first-and-goal. Hanover would quickly reach paydirt, as Borbonie found Gray open on a play-action rollout to his right. The Hawks again failed to convert the extra point attempt, but held a commanding 15-0 lead with 8:18 left in the first half.
Patrick Henry attempted to mount a scoring drive following the Hawks’ second touchdown, but the Hanover defense came up strong once again. Gray recorded a big sack for an eightyard loss, and the Patriots were forced to punt. The Hawks tried to add to their lead with a late drive just before the half, but a deep Borbonie heave was picked off by the Patrick Henry defense to quell the threat and keep the
score at 15-0 heading into halftime. The teams traded three-andouts to open the second half, and the Hawk defense continued the trend with three-andouts forced on the first three Patrick Henry drives of the half. Borbonie then led a long drive all the way to inside the Patriots’ 10-yard line, but the offense sputtered at the end and Hanover missed a 25-yard field goal, failing to add to their lead. The Hawks began to impose their will in the fourth quarter, using several bruising runs to break down the Patriot defense. Combs picked up a majority of his 130 yards in the quarter, and added a two-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left in the game. Gray and Johansen both recorded sacks in the final few minutes, putting a fitting exclamation point on the Hanover defense’s performance. While the Hanover offense did not put up any extravagant numbers, there were flashes of promise, especially with speedy wide receivers Elliot and Josh Harris. “Those two guys started to show what they are capable of tonight,” Stoudt said. Patrick Henry’s Clark was disappointed with the outcome for his Patriots, but was encouraged by the team’s play see HANOVER, pg. 31
Race for the Chase ends in Twilight Zone By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Fans have come to expect a lot of fireworks in the fall Sprint Cup Race to make the Chase at Richmond International Raceway. Drivers on the cusp of qualifying for the Chase for the Cusp drive wildly, sometimes desperately – and 12 of them qualified for NASCAR’s playoff round – but the end of the race itself qualified for the Twilight Zone. A late-race spinout by Michael Waltrip Racing team member Clint Bowyer cost Ryan Newman what looked to be a certain victory in the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway Saturday night as well as a wild-card bid for the Chase. Seemingly unneeded late pits by Bowyer and Waltrip team member Brian Vickers may have bumped Jeff Gordon out of the Chase. “We haven’t had the kind of year that this team is capable of. That’s where our focus is the next 10 races is just to know that we put in every bit of effort we possibly could,” said Gordon, who had begun the race in the pole position. “We fought through a lot of things. It wasn’t pretty but we were getting it done until that caution came out. We still could have made it in. The beneficiary of the weirdness was Bowyer’ and Vickers’ teammate, Martin Truex Jr., who edged Gordon for the final wild card berth in the Chase by a mere point. There is no doubt Truex put in a herculean effort as he battled to a seventh-place finish in the race. He fought a rough-handling NAPA Auto Parts Toyota throughout the night despite a broken right hand. He managed to finish in

seventh place, one spot ahead of Gordon. “We were terrible tonight – just terrible, terrible on the long runs,” Truex said. “We fought and we fought and we

fought just like we did last week. Last week we were at the tail end of the longest line with 100 [laps] to go and we almost won and finished third. And tonight, I don’t even know how that
happened. Good Lord was on our side tonight. My guys did a good job and now we can go back and regroup and start back from zero and go get them.” Still, some think his guys
may have done too good a job. Newman was leading the race – and the competition for the final wild card spot – when Bowyer spun out with seven laps to go. When the caution was lifted with three laps left, Carl Edwards got the jump on Newman and Kurt Busch, who finished second, for the victory. Bowyer’s spin, on the front stretch coming out of turn four, looked strange. “He just spun right out,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr. “That’s the craziest thing I ever saw. He just
came right around. … He was hemming around on the brakes and jerking the car around, and then the thing just spun out. It was crazy. I don’t know what was going on. I was right there, I almost run into it, so I’m glad we were able to get out of there without any trouble.” Bowyer said he thought something went wrong with the car, but audio replayed by ESPN after the race suggests more may have been afoot. While Bowyer was getting race updates from spotter Brett Griffin, crew chief Brian Pattie broke in. “Is your arm starting to hurt?” Pattie asked. “I bet it’s getting hot in there. Itch it.” Bowyer spun out right after that. NASCAR said Sunday morning it is investigating Bowyer’s spin. While the jury remains out on whether the spin was intentional and the effect of the spin on Truex’s finish Saturday, evidence is more clear that the extra pit stops by Bowyer and Vickers in the final laps helped. The Associated Press reviewed communications between Michael Waltrip team members Sunday. In those communications, MWR general manager Ty Norris is overheard telling Vickers to pit on a green flag because, “We need that 1 point.” Vickers questioned the call, but Norris remained firm. “You’ve got to pit this time,” Norris said. “We need that 1 point.” Bowyer’s and Vickers’ pits allowed Joey Logano to finish ahead of Gordon and claim the No. 10 spot in the Chase standings. If Gordon had finished in the top 10, Logano would have claimed the final wild card spot, leaving Truex out of the see ZONE, pg. 33
Sponsorship role important for sponsors, racers By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com After nearly every NASCAR race, the drivers and crew go through a ritual of getting their picture taken repeatedly with baseball caps emblazoned with logos denoting each of the sponsors of the race team. In some ways, it is a tedious ritual, but it acknowledges the symbiotic relationship between sponsors, race teams, race tracks, and NASCAR itself. Those cars fans like to see go so fast on the track cannot go anywhere without someone picking up at least part of the tab. The sponsorship relationship is an important one in sports – all the way from the 2-inch ads taken out in high school football programs to the naming rights for races. As big a mouthful as the phrase “Virginia 529 College Savings 250” might be for announcers and broadcasters at Richmond International
Raceway, the mouthful digests some very important benefits for all concerned. Mary Morris, chief executive officer of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan, said sponsorship of the fall Nationwide race at Richmond International Raceway is an important part on an overall outreach strategy to educate families about the program and how it can help families pay for college. “We’ve been looking for ways to expand the brand and this is a nontraditional avenue to do that,” Morris said. “RIR seems like a really perfect venue in that we bring in people from all over the state – all over the country, really – to RIR. It’s centrally located for us, and we get a very broad demographic.” Morris likes the fact that NASCAR attracts families. Dennis Bickmeier, president of Richmond International Raceway, said that partnerships with organizations such
as Virginia 529 likewise help attract more families to the track. “They’re out doing things in the community leading up to the event to promote their race, as are we. That’s what a partnership is all about,” Bickmeier said. “The other part of that is, we can’t do these events without great sponsor support to be able to deliver a quality event for our fans.” One area where opportunities for cross-pollination abounded was in the development of the Virginia 529 Kids Zone exhibit on the mall. Virginia 529, working with the Science Museum of Virginia and NASA, put together exhibits that allow kids to have fun while learning about the science of auto racing and space exploration, and that also allow parents to learn about the Virginia 529 programs. This year, NASA astronaut Leland Melvin – who served
as honorary starter for the Nationwide Series race Friday night – appeared at the Kids Zone amid Mentos rocket demonstrations and a petting zoo. Saturday, Sprint Cup series driver Joey Logano read a cou-
ple of stories to kids gathered at the Kids Zone. Morris hopes that such events, as entertaining as they are for families, get parents to stick around to learn about the Virginia 529 program.
“Hopefully people hear about us. They’ll see us on TV. They’ll see us at an event and see the banner,” Morris said. “But at some point we hope that they’ll actually stop and talk to us.”

Chase. But Logano’s top 10 finish gave Truex the advantage over Gordon for the final wild card spot. Truex said he was unaware of the conspiracy theories – especially regarding Bowyer’s spin. “I didn’t even know it happened,” Truex said. “I had no idea. I raced my butt off all night long. That’s all I can do. I tell my crew chief what my car is doing, what I need to go faster. That was enough to worry about.” While it is rare to have a Chase for the Sprint Cup without Gordon, this year is additionally weird because two other stalwarts – Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin – are out of the

Before embarking on a long night race, drivers and crew need to eat dinner. Before eating dinner, someone needs to cook. Friday night, prior to the start of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan 250 at Richmond International Raceway Friday night, part of the infield in the Nationwide Series garage area looked like a picnic ground as crewmembers were busy preparing fare for their teammates. Most of the cooks were hauler drivers, who set up propane grills in front of the trucks, setting out paper plates, foil pans, cooking implements, and the food they needed to feed the
15 to 20 members of each team depending on their skills in preparing a good meal that night. “Have you seen the driver?” asked Partick McGarrett, a hauler driver and cook for Kyle Larson’s racing team. “Even the skinny ones have got to eat.” While each cook has his own specialty, they try to serve a full meal that consists of a meat, vegetables and grains. They have practiced their craft. “It’s just routine,” said Park Daniello, hauler driver for Mike Bliss. Daniello prepared chicken and steak fajitas with Spanish rice. The row of grills looked like a lane full of tailgaters, but without the fan paraphernalia or booze.
Some drivers, like Michael Arnett, chooses to eats in his motor coach. His hauler driver Jeff Gilbert, says Arnett prefers pasta or steak before a race. Others, like Alex Bowman, always eats with his team. The cook for Bowman’s team, Mike Henry, said Bowman is easy to please. “Bowman is only 20 and will eat just about anything,” Henry said as he prepared barbeque ribs and vegetables. The rest of the drivers, like Trevor Bayne, will sometimes eat with their crew. For Bayne, it depends on what’s on the menu. Friday night Bayne’s hauler driver, Jay Maybry prepared chicken breast, rice and pasta salad. Bayne opted for different fare that night.

Lee-Davis field hockey opens season with victory Adding to their difficulties was a field that needed trimming. “The grass is higher than it is supposed to be,” Jones said. “For the officials, they can’t see the ball. Not only can they not see it, it is going to cause the ball to be undercut when the girls hit it.” Deep Run coach Rachel Whitten said her team did well under the circumstances. “Obviously it was pretty physical and the fields weren’t the best” Whitten said. “But I think everyone played the best that they could under the circumstances.” Jones likewise felt the Confederates did the best they could. “I am extremely proud of how we pulled it out and that we kept it together as long as we did,” Jones said. “That’s not an easy task for teenaged girls to be able to do. They definitely showed who they are tonight.”
By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com The scoring was all over mid-way through the first half, but Lee-Davis had to play 45 grueling minutes more of field hockey to hold on to a 2-1 victory in the Confederates’ season opener against visiting Deep Run Wednesday. All three goals happened in a five-minute span: Lee Davis’ Cameron Gibson put the Confederates on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Deep Run’s Maura Christian, assisted by Cora Every, scored an equalizer in the 16th minute. Lauren Wolfgang, assisted by Harper Matthews, scored the go-ahead goal for the Confederates in the 15th minute. After that, the game settled into a hard-fought slog in the midfield. “It was a frustrating game from all different ends,” said Lee-Davis coach Courtney Jones. “The biggest challenge for us today was our mental game.” Mental mistakes led to more than just missed scoring oppor-

King William drops volleyball match By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Essex brought its girls’ volleyball team to Central Garage looking like a well-oiled machine. It left Central Garage looking the same way, having swept King William 25-14, 2517, 25-14 in the Cavaliers’ 2013 season opener. At times the Cavaliers looked out of sync – for good reason. King William coach Lew Phillips was moving girls around to see how they did in different positions. “They moved well, but this

being a non-district match – our first match – I was trying to see who worked best in what position,” Phillips said. “I had players in a different position every game, so they never really had a chance to settle in.” The unfamiliar territories the girls’ faced each game proved challenging, especially in the first game as uncertainty led to hesitation – and points lost to the Trojans (1-1). “I told them, I said, ‘You were somewhere else every game. You were in a different position, having to think in a different corner every time,’” Phillips said. “I

wasn’t unhappy with their performance. The miscommunication and the uncoordination was [because of] the fact that I was putting them in a different position every time.” Phillips said the experimentation will pay off in time. “I ran three different girls at setters, trying to find the best pair. I ran a couple different girls playing defense,” Phillips said. “I learned a lot tonight. They learned a lot tonight. … Obviously you always like to win, but I was pleased with their performance under the pressure that I put them under.”
King William (0-1) struggled to contain Essex runs throughout the match. The Trojans scored six unanswered runs at the start of the first game, but the Cavaliers closed to within two points, 10-8, before Essex sprinted ahead with an 8-point run to put the game out of reach. The Trojans scored nineunanswered points at the start of the second game to put King William at a significant disadvantage. a stretch themselves. “We had a little bit of trouble in our last game,” said Essex coach Brittney Sgroi. “We’ve been working a lot on move-
ment, a lot on our passes. … A pass is what starts every play. If you get a good pass up and you can get a good set, you can kill – so that always helps.”
