Numerous residents expressed their thoughts on posters they waved during the public hearing.

Most Hanover County citizens agree that the county needs a movie theater. Where to locate that complex is the subject of much more controversy. The Hanover County Board Supervisors also were left scratching their heads following a three-hour public hearing that revealed a large number of residents opposed to the project. Citing the lack of a traffic study and the numerous objections raised by nearby residents, the supervisors voted to defer

action on the controversial project until that study could be completed and scheduled the matter for their Oct. 23 meeting. After gaining approval from the Planning Commission, a plan to construct a 12-movie muti-plex theater in the Hanover Village Shopping Center near Brandy Creek Drive in Mechanicsville moved to a public hearing at last Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Citizens packed the supervisors’ meeting room for the opportunity to present their views on the proposed project.

Sulser claims inequity in enrollment figures By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local Hanover County School Board member Norman Sulser has his sights set on remedying what he considers an inequity when it comes to enrollment numbers at Hanover County Public Schools.

He was ready last month to suggest a study be conducted to examine capacities at several county schools. That discussion was tabled due to the absence of two board members at the August meeting. Sulser, who represents the Cold Harbor District, expanded that request at last week’s meet-

ing, moving for a system-wide study of enrollments, physical conditions and capacities. A preliminary investigation of 2012 numbers reveals that there are discrepancies in the student enrollments and schools that seem — on the surface — the most suited to handle additional students are actually recording

some of their lowest percentage of capacity attendance figures. Sulser said he thinks it’s time for an examination of current capacities to see if enrollments can be more closely aligned. Enrollment figures from 2012 reveal that while Hanover High see SULSER, pg. 4

Planning director David Maloney said buffers between the theater building and the adjacent homes is between 160 and 275 feet, with vegetation and a small pond. Maloney pointed out that many other uses are allowed in the shopping center setting, some of which could impact neighbors more than a movie theatre. Youth dairy cattle, dairy goat shows returning to State Fair Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com A full complement of 4-H and FFA animal competitions will be on hand for the State Fair of Virginia with the return of the youth dairy cattle and dairy goat shows. The dairy events will be held on a portion of The Meadow Event Park south of state Route 30, near the venue’s equine facility, along with all of the other livestock competitions. “We are excited to be bringing the dairy cattle and dairy goat events, along with the other youth livestock events, back to the State Fair,� Edwin Jones, director of Virginia Cooperative Extension, said. “We believe the fair provides a quality experience for the youth exhibitors and a great opportunity for the public to see and learn more about agriculture.� The 4-H and FFA dairy shows will kick off the youth

animal competitions Sept. 2729. The youth shows for dairy cattle and dairy goats will be open to all Virginia 4-H and FFA members. Open dairy competitions are for anyone who wants to compete. Winners of the youth shows will receive premiums and scholarships. “This program not only provides scholarship money but also gives the large number of youth who participate invaluable life lessons that accompany raising and showing livestock,� Rachel Kohl, an advanced instructor in Virginia Tech’s Agricultural Technology Program and superintendent of the fair’s dairy goat competitions, said. The dairy events will join the other 4-H and FFA livestock shows in their new location, which is close to the fair entrance gate and accessible from the midway area via a pedestrian tunnel under state

Route 30. “This is a huge positive, moving the livestock events next to the equine facility,� Glenn Martin, SFVA livestock and events coordinator, said. “When fair-goers go through the entrance, they will see the livestock tents immediately and will hopefully take the opportunity to start their fair visit there. This is a great chance for the general public to get closer to livestock and horses and ask questions of show participants.� This year’s State Fair of Virginia will run from Sept. 27 through Oct. 6. Information is available at StateFairVa.org. The State Fair is held each fall at its permanent home at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The fair’s mission is to increase agricultural and natural resource awareness and interest through educational programs, exhibitions and competitions in a fun, family-friendly setting.

School operates at 75 percent of capacity, Lee-Davis High School is almost at full capacity with 95 percent enrollment. Sulser made that motion at the Tuesday, Sept. 10, meeting, tasking the superintendent with conducting an evaluation of facilities within the system. That will include functional capacity and projected future enrollments. Superintendent Jamelle Wilson agreed and said the last facilities study was completed in 2007, almost six years ago. Assistant superintendent David Myers suggested working more closely with the Hanover County Planning Commission and county planners to gauge future enrollments. “We want to take advantage of all the information that is available to us,” Myers said. In 2007, School Board members decided that three consecutive years of 120 percent capacity was maximum enrollment. “We may want to look at that definition,” Wilson said. She also noted physical versus functional capacity when considering enrollments. A revision to the county’s uniform conditions establishes a maximum pay scale for county employees. Once an employee reaches that maximum salary, no future raises will be granted. In another matter, Myers presented an update to the board on the summer maintenance projects, most of which have been completed. With the assistance of new facilities director Ed Buzzelli, 97 percent of principal request were completed and 92 percent of all work orders were completed.

Should elected officials be able to accept gifts? With the governor and attorney general under a big microscope, the question in the headline is valid. And, no, they aren’t the first — and, until guidelines change, won’t be the last — officeholders to accept gifts. But the question remains: Should elected officials be able to accept gifts? Regardless of how ethical we may consider an individual, no one should want even a hint of scandal attached to their name and office. Political contributions are a given. It’s expensive to seek office. And the higher you go, the more costly it becomes. So, what about a nice vacation or a Rolex watch? Do you really think those gifts are acceptable? Doesn’t it reek of the possibility of owing someone something?! Now, that’s not to say an elected official will be influenced by a week at the beach or an expensive piece of jewelry. The only way to dismiss any questions about favors, etc., is to step away from what may be legal and ethical and graciously say “No thank you.” Just because the gift is offered doesn’t mean it has to be taken. That way, when election time rolls around, there isn’t a scandal in the making. If you don’t put skeletons in the closet, they can’t be discovered. Are Bob McDonnell and Ken Cuccinelli the only elected officials to accept gifts? Goodness no. They have, however, found themselves in an unpleasant spotlight. What will this recent hoopla means for their futures? Only time will tell.

Etc. Admittedly, this writer is a true crime fan. I know — after having written that sentence, it comes off a bit morbid and bizarre. Anyway, what a surprise it was last week to see our own former sheriff, retired Col. V. Stuart Cook, on “Twisted” on the Investigation Discovery channel. He was supervising the homicide department with the Richmond Police Department when the Briley brothers terrorized the city in 1979. Col. Constitution Week officially got underway on Tuesday and continues through Monday. This year, according to the Scotchtown Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is the 226th anniversary of the signing of the great document. Bonnie D. Anderson, Current Events chairman of the local chapter, said the week should emphasize the responsibilities of learning about, protecting, defending, and preserving the Constitution, and studying the historical events that occurred during September 1787. Anderson also said that the tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the DAR. In 1955, the DAR petitioned the U.S. Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight E. Eisenhower. Observance highlights include: 1. Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, commemorates the signing of the Constitution of the United States. You have probably heard the phrase, “That’s unconstitutional� or “That’s my constitutional right!� Many times Americans believe that sayings and phrases are in our Constitution but they really aren’t. For example, nowhere in the Constitution does it say “It’s a free country.� In addition, Amendment 1 does not include

tion had to comply. Hanover County finally complied after much discussion and holding out until they finally realized there were some parents who just wouldn’t give up. They remodeled a garage at Gandy Elementary School to house this program. Two families began in the program in August of that year and made four trips a day as they did not give us a bus. Finally, in March of 1977, they gave us the first bus. When my daughter went in the program she was 10 – could not walk or talk, drinking a bottle and eating baby food. The godsend to us was Martha Raby, the first teacher in the program. Her words to me were “Your child will give up the bottle, eating baby food and we will toilet train her.” All I could do was say “Good luck.” Well, Ms. Raby accomplished those tasks after much hard work. We needed a professional who not only could accomplish such tasks but really cared and was totally dedicated to her job. That was Ms. Raby. We also had a fine caring principal, Mr. Kelly, as he was totally dedicated to the program and the kids. Now that we had a bus, numerous kids came into the program. Whenever a teacher today is honored with the Martha Raby Award, consider it a real honor. She was the foundation of one of the finest handicapped pro-

grams in our state. Look at our program today and we all say “Praise the Lord for Ms. Raby.” Our daughters, who were first in the program, Lisa Newton and Denise Fain, not only accomplished more than anyone predicted, they and their parents knew they were truly loved. Is it a crime to be poor? I am writing in response to Rick Ryan’s comment in the Aug. 4 Metro section of the Richmond Times-Dispatch concerning the construction of apartment housing in Hanover County. It is obvious that Mr. Ryan does not want people who do not look like him to move to Hanover, whether they are poor or not. What is his definition of a “different demographic group?” Mr. Ryan seems to think that all people who choose to live in apartments are poor and out to commit crime. The Sheriff ’s Office in Hanover County receives more calls for service from residential neighborhoods than they do from apartments or townhouses because that is where they want to live, not because they are poor. Mr. Ryan seems to have a bias against those he considers

“poor.” I do not know Mr. Ryan, but I am sure if we looked at his financial status there are some in Hanover who would consider him poor. He is part of a group of people who, once they move to this county, want to prevent anyone else from moving here as well. Has Mr. Ryan never had a friend or family member who has lived in an apartment or in a neighborhood that has seen better days? I do not think anyone chooses to be poor. In life we will get sick, lose our jobs, or at times make wrong decisions. I hope that none of these circumstances happen to Mr. Ryan or anyone he cares about. Theater plan stuns reader I am stunned to think that anyone would think that the Lee Davis Road area would be a good site for a theater! They obviously haven’t thought this through! I live in the Henry District, but I regularly travel on Mechanicsville Turnpike. We are already eager for the renovations for Mechanicsville Turnpike to happen so that (hopefully) it will relieve some of the congestion on the road. But, those renovations are years off. So, what do we do in the meantime? A theater is only going to exasperate the situation. I am also concerned about crime and the impact it will have on that area. Have you been to the Virginia Center Commons theater recently? Do you shop at that mall? Everyone I know travels to the theater and the Macy’s in Short Pump, even though we

drive right past the closer locations on Route 1. There’s a lot of talk about this proposed theater bringing jobs to the county and revitalizing the shopping center at Hanover Village. But, what happens if this does just the opposite and drives people away? Increased crime tends to have that effect! Finally, I have read the sheriff ’s [Col. David R. Hines] statement on the impact of this theater on his department and public safety. The theater will increase the demands on his resources in regard to increased traffic issues and crime. It’s my understanding that the Sheriff ’s Office has not had a pay raise and has not hired any additional staff since about 2007. Are we going to raise taxes in order to hire more deputies to keep up with growth and growing crime? Honestly, if we want to bring new business to the county, why would we bring one that brings crime along with it?! I am not against development of the site where the proposed theater would go. However, there are better options that would not have the negative impact a theater will have on our community! Liz Czaja Mechanicsville

Parent questions school ‘lockout’ I am a single full- time working parent to four children. The oldest three are in Hanover County Public Schools. I vividly remember, during our middle school orientation last year, the principal asking parents to please not drop students off at school prior to 8 a.m. The doors are not unlocked until that time and parents are asked not to leave their children unsupervised on the sidewalk outside of the school. Daelan King, the daughter of Chris and Liza King, recently donated more than 11 inches of her hair to Locks of Love. Daelan is 8 years old and a third grader at Pole Green Elementary School. She got her hair cut at Salon Van Haren in Ashland. The owner/stylist, Len Van Haren-Tull, did the honors of cutting off Daelan’s hair and styling it afterwards. Daelan said she hopes that her donation will be able to help someone in need.

why so many parents feel as if they have no other choice but to do just that. I need to leave for work long before the middle school bus arrives to carry my children to school. I am not comfortable leaving them home alone to lock the house and get themselves to that bus stop alone. Call me overprotective if you will, but I prefer to say that I am simply a loving mom that wants to make the best choices I can for my family. My first alternative was to drop the children off with a friend on my way to work — they could catch the bus in that neighborhood and a loving adult would be there to wave them off. The Hanover County Schools Transportation Department denied that request, saying that the bus was too full. My second alternative was to ask, yet another, sweet friend to bring my children to the

elementary school where she teaches, where they could then catch a bus with other children to the middle school. As of today, that request also was denied by Hanover County Schools Transportation Department. Today, I was a full hour late getting to work as I waited for the elementary and middle school buses to arrive and then made my stop to drop my youngest off at daycare. I am not asking to send my children to a school outside of our district. My children are not behavior problems. I have not attempted to lie or deceive anyone. In fact, by going through the proper channels, I have probably done more than many parents would do. Yet, as of today, my children do not have transportation to middle school. Is Hanover County truly running buses this overcrowded that they cannot accommodate situations such as mine? Can we truly justify transportation to other events, such as the

afterschool Burkwood Aquatic swim practice (not a Hanover County sponsored event) but not meet the basic transportation needs of some of our county students? Most disturbing to me is that county officials have repeatedly suggested to me that I leave my children home alone to catch the bus themselves. If we have parents, in this day and age, that actually want to be protective of their children, are Hanover County officials asking them to do otherwise? the phrases “innocent until proven guilty” and “presumption of innocence” are not found in the 5th Amendment nor in any part of the Constitution. These phrases are derived from English law and are part of our system and considered common law today. 4. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today and is the basic document of our republic, which protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law. Did you know that you cannot be denied the right to vote because of race or gender? But remember, the Constitution never clearly ensures the “right to vote.” The 26th Amendment requires that 18-year-olds must be able to vote; however, states may allow persons younger than 18 to vote, if they choose. The qualifications for voters are left to the states as long as they do not conflict with the Constitution. In some states, felons that are in prison or on probation are denied the right to vote. 5. American colonists fought, sacrificed and died to establish and preserve the freedoms now guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States. The right to privacy has come to the public’s attention through various constitutional Supreme Court rulings. Privacy is not specifically mentioned in the Constitution, but, over the years, the Supreme Court has made decisions that have established that the right to privacy

is a basic human right and, as such, is protected by virtue of the 9th Amendment. 6. The phrase “separation of church and state” does not appear anywhere in the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson had written that the 1st Amendment erected a “wall of separation” between the church and state and James Madison said it “drew a line.” The “wall of separation” phrase is frequently thought to mean that government should not involve or establish itself in any religion. 7. Inauguration Day is set in the 20th Amendment. The Presidential and Vice Presidential terms end, and then the next term begins on January 20th following an election. The time between the election and Inauguration Day is known as the Lame Duck period, particularly if the President was not re-elected. 8. Did you know that the only cimre that is defined in the Constitution is treason? Specifically, it is adhering to or giving comfort to the enemies of the United States. It can only be proven if the accused admits to it in open court or on the testimony of two eyewitnesses. 9. The 12th Amendment states that electors may not vote for a President and Vice President from their state and a Vice President also from their state, but the Constitution doesn’t say that they cannot be from the same state. Advancing planning, preparing for emergencies doesn’t have to be costly Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Within the past two years, many Virginians have been affected by natural disasters, from the historic Mineral earthquake to hurricanes Irene and Sandy, to Tropical Storm Lee to a severe derecho wind storm and also winter storms. Being ready for emergencies is essential, and there is no better time to prepare than September, which is National Preparedness Month. “Advance planning for disasters pays off,” said Michael Cline, state coordinator of emergency management. “Those who have taken some time to get their families, homes and businesses ready for emergencies recover more quickly. Also, it doesn’t have to cost a lot or take a lot of time to prepare.” Families and individuals should plan as though they will be without electricity, water service, access to a supermarket or

other local services for at least three days. Follow these steps: Make a plan. This may be the single most important thing you can do, and it’s free. Make sure everyone in your family understands where to go and what to do in case of an emergency. Update your contact information and post it in visible places in your home and workplace. Get a free emergency plan worksheet at www.ReadyVirginia.gov or download the Ready Virginia app from the App Store and Google Play. Set aside emergency supplies. Don’t wait for a storm. Buy preparedness items throughout the year instead of all at once. Shop at sales and used goods stores. Choose the essentials that fit your needs and budget. If you don’t have emergency supplies, September is a good time to get started. Get a list at www.ReadyVirgina.gov. Store water. You don’t have to buy expensive bottled water. Just make sure

your water containers are disinfected and airtight. Have at least a three-day supply of water on hand – that’s one gallon per person per day. Check your policy. Take a few minutes to review your insurance policy during National Preparedness Month. Get with your agent to make any necessary changes. Consider adding flood insurance because most policies don’t include it. Renters can get flood insurance, too. Visit www.floodsmart.gov for more. Stay informed. Stay aware of changing weather conditions by monitoring local media reports. (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Ellen Thornhill, marketing and communications manager for Goodwill that serves Hampton Roads and Central Virginia.) Since July 2006, Goodwill has operated a store at 7147 Brandy Run Drive in Mechanicsville. A Goodwill Community Employment Center is connected, with the goal of helping area residents find jobs and businesses get qualified candidates. Last year, the Mechanicsville CEC served more than 1,500 people and businesses. Every month, an average of 23 people are placed in competitive employment in and around the community. Goodwill operates 20 job training and career development programs with its Community Employment Centers providing the gateway for job seekers to many of those services. Anyone who is unemployed or underemployed can visit a Goodwill CEC and get help to create a resume, improve their interviewing skills, develop a career plan, and meet employ-

ers. Goodwill’s stores provide the majority of the revenue to fund Goodwill’s programs. In addition, the stores provide work experience opportunities and sometimes permanent job placement for Goodwill’s clients. The community’s generous donations, at the Mechanicsville store and at Goodwill’s other attended donation trailers and donation bins in the area, are what enable Goodwill to change lives. The organization recently has been a topic in social media, including Facebook, emails and blogs. A rumor recently surfaced stating that Goodwill’s CEO earns $2 million per year and that Goodwill is a for-profit organization. Goodwill would expect these rumors to be upsetting to our shoppers and donors who support our mission. Thankfully, the rumors are not true. Andy Condlin represented Village Partners at the hearing and said this project is more than appropriate. “This area is already designed for and planned for a shopping center,” Condlin said. “Most of the traffic is off peak hours. We realize there is a frustration with the current traffic problems but we have proffered improvements.” “This use is less that the typical retail that could operate there without any restrictions today,” Condlin said. He also addressed safety

concerns. “Whatever the sheriff or staff asks, we have to do it,” Condlin said. “It’s in the best interest of this business to have a safe and inviting environment.” Condlin agreed the Conditional Use Permit allows for more monitoring from county officials and any problems can be addressed and corrected. “In the end, this is about the appropriate use of a property,” Condlin said. But many who showed up for the public hearing didn’t agree with those assessments and spoke in vehement opposition to locating the theater near the busy Lee-Davis Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike inter-

section. And a few spoke in favor of the project, including resident Heather Reichstetter. “There are several different types of businesses that could go up in the same spot and not be put through the same process that could be built without the county’s input at all,” she said. She noted the area is zoned for development. “At some point something is going to go there. By allowing this theater, it gives you a say in how it’s done,” Reichstetter said. She said attending movies in Hanover will allow county residents to spend their money at home, not in neighboring

counties. “That’s hard earned money that will be kept in our county,” she said. “That’s not a bad thing for our community. It’s controlled growth, an increase in revenue and something to do on a Saturday night.” Speakers opposed to the project far outweighed the number of people who spoke in favor of the complex. They cited a familiar list of complaints when it came to traffic, public safety and the impact the new development would have on their lives. Many were longtime residents of neighboring subdivisions and spoke of frustrating traffic problems already existing in that area. The opponents came complete with signs, some reading “not here, not now” and other placards warning “Vote this in and we’ll vote you out.” “I’m not against growth. I’m not even against a movie theater,” said resident Deb Wetlaufer. “I simply expect responsible growth and that a certain level of due diligence be met.” Wetlaufer said the project simply doesn’t fit the proposed site. “I do not believe this is an

appropriate location for a theater, and, talking to any of the affected residents, most feel that anything would be better than a movie theater.” she said. She was followed by a long line of speakers, most from neighborhoods adjacent to the proposed project, who told of traffic nightmares that exist in that area. Their concerns did not fall on deaf ears and some supervisors said the traffic issue was just too big an obstacle to overcome, especially with the absence of a traffic study. Maloney pointed out that a traffic study is not required when the projected peak traffic patterns do not exceed recommended levels established by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). He also noted five access points in the shopping center that would potentially house the movie complex. South Anna District supervisor Wayne Hazzard said he still wasn’t convinced that the increased traffic would not present a major concern to an already congested area. He noted that the problem with the theater traffic is that all of it arrives and leaves at one time.

Casino Night, with proceeds benefitting the autism community, will be presented from 7:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Center of the Universe Brewing Company at 11293 Air Park Road in Ashland. Tickets are $25 per person. The event will feature casino games, a silent auction and giveaways. A limited number of tickets are available. The Autism Grant provides tuition scholarships to The Dominion School for Autism, a 501(c)(3) public charity and a program of the Commonwealth Autism Service. Revised Comprehensive Plan approved by 4-3 vote By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local This year’s Comprehensive Plan process was an arduous task that involved numerous community meetings extended Planning Commission consideration and expanded community involvement. Bringing that process to an end was scheduled for consideration at last week’s regular meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. The final plan reflected recent input obtained at a public

hearing, workshop and community meetings reducing density guidelines in three major areas of concern. It also reduced the number of multi-use designated areas and established new figures for commercial/residential mix in those areas. The target now is a 65-35 percent mix. The Comprehensive Plan was last updated in 2007 and the Suburban Service Area was increased in that time. The plan presented by the Planning Commission opened even more

areas for economic development and multi-use activities. That proposal drew large opposition from residents affected by what they saw as the possibility of multi-unit housing in their areas. The latest plan tweaked those areas and lowered density to one to two units per acre in the Hylas, U.S. 1 and U.S. 33 corridors. The following changes will be sent to the Planning Commission for further consideration:

Henry District supervisor and vice chair Sean Davis questioned the reasoning behind changing the plan just for the sake of change, and noted many of the aspects of the 2007 plan have not been utilized and provide good growth management plans. “Multi-use has almost become a four-letter word in Hanover County in the past couple of weeks,” Davis said. “My largest concern is that I don’t have a reason to vote for change now. What could we accomplish with the new plan that we couldn’t accomplish with the current plan?” he

Beaverdam District supervisor Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley said he had voted for Comprehensive Plans in the past, but he couldn’t support this year’s edition. “That was before I realized the ramifications of what could come out of a Comprehensive Plan,” Stanley offered as a lighthearted explanation of his previous approvals. “What really concerns me is the multi-use designation,” Stanley said. “I think there’s going to be more growth in the future if you allow this type of development.” Cold Harbor District supervisor Elton Wade joined the opposition with the third vote, but the revised plan was

approved by a 4-3 margin. “A lot of work has gone into this update,” Ashland District supervisor Ed Via said as he made the motion for approval. Mechanicsville District supervisor and chair Canova Peterson, Chickahominy District supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek and Hazzard joined Via in approving the amended plan. Dr. Jamelle Wilson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, told the supervisors that schools are open and “committed to excellence” and will insist on system-wide accountability throughout the division. Wilson presented an update on the school opening in Hanover and provided a progress report on numerous construction projects that were completed over the summer. She said an opening day tour of all campuses revealed smiling faces and happy students as they realized the improvements made to their campuses over the summer. “The visual impact was palpable as we visited schools that first week. Our students and staff loved what we did,” Wilson said. More than 2,000 work orders were completed over the summer break. “It’s not just a small thing. It’s made a huge difference,” Wilson said.

Lee-Davis sweeps Patriots in girls volleyball match By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Lee-Davis’ girls’ volleyball team came out a little flat against visiting Patrick Henry Wednesday night. They were flat-footed and flat emotionally, and – while they won the first two games of the match – they did not look terribly dominant. That changed in the third game and final game, however, as a recharged Confederate attack tore through the Patriots’ defense, enabling Lee-Davis to sweep the night with a 25-19, 25-22, 24-7 victory. The girls weren’t the only ones feeling flat – even LeeDavis coach Sharon Gaston admitted feeling that way at the start of the match. That does not mean the girls on either team failed to put forth any effort. “They played hard. Patrick Henry played hard,” Gaston said. “We were a little bit on our heels in those [first] two games, but then that came around in the third set, which shows in the score.” The Patriots (2-2) held their

down two. We’ve got to get over that,” said Patrick Henry coach Billy Farmer. “I don’t know if we ran out of steam. But when you get down two games, real close games, you get frustrated.
