In a process designed to involve the community in advance of its 2014-2015 formal budget presentation, Hanover County School Board

members held a pre-planning public hearing last week in Ashland. While the School Board has published budget goals and guidelines, a final presentation is not expected until January after state education fund contributions become available.

But the inclusive process drew praise from a group of speakers who voiced support of the proposed guidelines and goals for the upcoming budget season, including lowered class sizes and pay increases for teachers. Angela Downer, president of

Deputies honored for lifesaving efforts

Dana Schrad, executive director of the Virginia Sheriff ’s Association of Chiefs of Police, presented four Hanover County deputies with Lifesaving Awards for their heroic efforts during a fire incident in the county earlier this year. “These lifesaving awards are one of the most important ways that we can honor Virginia law enforcement officers for the outstanding service they provide us every day,” Shrad said. Around 3 a.m. on Feb. 21, all four of the honorees responded

to a fire in the eastern part of the county. Deputy Jason Bonifacio entered the burring house by breaking a sliding glass door and carried an unconscious 11year-old male out of a smokefilled room and handed him off to Deputy Thomas Hauck who carried the child to safety.
