Christmas support in Hanover Tom Haynie/The Local

Johnny Moore, president of the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club, recently presented Cathy Tillman, the 2013 Hanover Christmas Mother, with a check and toys. Members have a longstanding tradition of hosting the Hanover Christmas Mother at their December breakfast meeting. They gathered on Dec. 6 and brought unwrapped toys for the Christmas Mother to give to the children of Hanover County. Donations are still being accepted at Hanover Christmas Mother, P.O. The documentary is focused on removing the stigmas associated with substance abuse and helping the 23.5 million Americans who struggle with addiction get the help they need. “I think a lot of people think alcoholism and drug problems are a moral failing,” Conner said. Shinholser said the media gives frenzied attention to addiction-related scandals involving celebrities, but doesn’t always follow up on successful recovery efforts. “How often do you see stories on how well they’re doing?” Shinholser asked. Conner agreed, noting that her public troubles erupted around the time Lindsay Lohan started making headlines for alcoholand drug-related issues, which have been covered intensely as Conner has quietly lived a sober life for nearly seven years.

Due to a reporter’s error, an article that appeared in our Dec. 18, 2013, edition incorrectly stated that Hanover County Board of Supervisors members Canova Peterson, Sean Davis, Wayne Hazzard and Angela Kelly-Wiecek were not included in the county’s e-mail archiving system when a public records request was made by a citizen. Those four supervisors were included in the county’s archiving system, while Aubrey Stanley, Ed Via and Elton Wade were not. We regret the error. In a follow-up interview, County Attorney Sterling Rives stressed that Hanover County’s archiving practices have at no point been in violation of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act or the Virginia Public Records Act, and that an upgrade to the county’s email archiving system was planned before the public records request was initiated by a citizen.

Both Conner and Shinholser pointed to the need for preventive education and treatment programs to help fight addiction problems — not harsh penalties. Conner said she was particularly impressed with inmate treatment and education programs she visited in Henrico County and Richmond City, which Shinholser said he’d like to see implemented at the Pamunkey Regional Jail as well. The two stressed the need for affordable treatment in the community to help keep people with addiction problems out

of jail. “You can treat them a whole lot cheaper in the community than in the criminal justice system,” Shinholser said. Conner said some of her most important and rewarding work is the visits she makes to schools, where she tells students there should be no shame about asking for help, whether the problem is with you, a family member or a friend. “The little Tara in the crowd — her ears might prick up,” Conner said. “They’re afraid to ask questions. They’re afraid they’ll get in trouble. I’ve had kids come up to me in tears,” noting that she often leaves full guidance counselors’ offices in

her wake. Conner and Shinholser, although they had only spent a few days together, joked like friends with decades of shared history during their three-day tour of the region. The two agreed that the bond of living through addiction breaks down all other boundaries. “It’s amazing how an inmate can relate to Miss USA and Miss USA to an inmate,” Conner said. “We’re like family.” Her advocacy visits don’t rake in big bucks for Conner, who has turned down a million dollar offer to model in Playboy, but she said her sober life is worth more than cash. “Recovery has given me an

opportunity to live beyond my wildest dreams,” Conner said. As for those who still call her a disgrace, Conner said her story can provide a message of hope, love and understanding, not stigmas, shame and judgment. “I was not a bad person trying to make myself look good,” Conner said. “I was a sick person trying to get well.” Now, she dedicates her life, as Shinholser does, to trying to help others find their way. “If that’s a disgrace, then sign me up,” Conner said. Richmond — from the parades to the bustling department stores. For Miller, nostalgia for the Richmond area in the 1960s and ’70s made it easy to weave together “A Lug Nuts Christmas,” an original Virginia Repertory Theatre play underway at Hanover

1960s. The members, all from the Mechanicsville area, were the sons of mechanics and sang together for 10 years until an acrimonious split over — you guessed it — a girl. “The show is all about the music,” Miller said. “What I wrote was the connecting material for the music, along with the very first and last songs.” In the play, the president of the Pamunkey Matrons’

mechanic, a dentist and a sound equipment dealer, into reuniting for a special show commemorating the 200th anniversary of Hanover Tavern, Miller explained. The men get musically whipped back into shape by a local music teacher, he added. There are lots of pieces of local history woven throughout the show, Miller said, from mentions of the Hanover

“What we know is our Hanover audience loves these homegrown musical pastiches,” Miller said. “All of the ‘Smoke on the Mountain’ shows were really popular for us. So we decided to create a Christmas show that was full of doo-wop and set in Hanover. I think the audience will get a kick out of it, particularly people my age.” Selecting the songs for the Lug Nuts to cover was easy

for Miller, who said he simply went through Top 40 listings from 1959 to 1971 and chose some of his favorite songs. The songs are iconic enough that even those who didn’t grow up in the ’60s and ’70s are likely to be able to sing along, Miller added. In addition to plenty of Christmas songs, Miller said audiences will enjoy classics like “Little Darlin’,” “Barbara Ann”

by the Beach Boys, “The Book of Love,” “Who Put the Bomp” and “Runaway.” among others. “I love this music. It’s very fun music, it’s melodic, you can sing the tune – it’s when things were catchy.” The cast includes some familiar faces who have appeared in previous Virginia Repertory Shows, alongside a see NOSTALGIA, pg. 22

Christmas magic in Victories can be measured in degrees a downtown mindset Despite what the driver’s license may say in terms of date of birth, many of us become almost child-like at Christmastime. Whether you’re 5 or 50, it can be a time of wonderment and beauty. The big lush tree bursting with decorative ornaments, sparkling lights, tinsel and garland and that smell of pine (even if it comes from an aerosol can) can create a flood of memories — especially of the days of youth. Having grown up in a small town, Christmas brought that little city wedged between hills alive with the sights and sounds associated with the season. The Christmas Parade — just like the one we enjoy in the village of Mechanicsville — filled the streets with spectators. It’s always held after dark, with stores and restaurants extending their hours to benefit their December sales and accommodate shoppers. There was a special excitement on Christmas Eve (and some of us have been known to wait until the last minute to finish buying gifts). The streets in my hometown were abuzz with people shopping, chatting, absorbing the moment. Since moving to Mechanicsville in 2008, the stories about the Snow Queen and the trip into Richmond’s department stores have evoked a kinship to the uniqueness of “downtown” and how it offered a different shopping experience. And that’s being said by a mallaholic. When I think back to my hometown and Christmas, the memories bring many smiles of a time of “everybody knowing everybody.” That’s the good (and bad) of living in a small town. The good far outweighs the bad. Whether as a member of a civic organization or the company that employed me, there was always a stint at the Salvation Army kettle in the heart of our little downtown. Christmas music played in the background. (On an 8-track player at one time. Yes, you read that right.) My hometown in the hills isn’t so different from life here in Hanover County, where family, friends, community matter most — and we watch out for one another. It’s that sense of neighbor that makes us special and why we enjoy our home. Merry Christmas! Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local

For the past six weeks, Christmas has taken a back seat around our house, as we progressed day-to-day through my son’s serial casting procedure to assist him in walking. It’s something most of us take for granted, but, for Jack, walking is a daily struggle to negotiate the normal paths of life. Placing casts on his ankles would, hopefully, turn his feet inward by a few degrees improving his gait, allowing him to maybe walk longer. Each week, a new cast was placed on Jack’s legs, and he dutifully accepted the disappointing analysis of the results.

But things started to change midway through the procedure, and we celebrated with each degree gained as Jack progressed. Last week, the cast came off and Jack’s right leg had turned a full 10 degrees, almost back to a normal position. I never imagined victories measured in degrees could bring such happiness to a family. It was a collective gift that made us all realize just how fragile and precious each and every life is. Since Jack’s diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, holidays are a constant reminder of a clock that ticks for children with MD. Their annual arrival means another year has passed

in an inevitable march toward an end we never discuss. And, yes, it’s terribly painful for me as I consider the realities of an enemy I can’t defeat, a fight I cannot win and an opponent who will one day claim its terrible victory. It’s a reality I live with daily, but — even with its despairingly painful message — it also offers a pragmatic reality of the importance of every day. When I stopped by Jack’s school to pick him up last week, I inquired how he was getting around at school. “It’s hard for him, but he never complains,” his teacher said. “He never does,” I replied. Now, I’m not sure how or from see DEGREES, pg. 13

LETTERS | Reader Views

Political philosophies vs. nation built on true freedom In response to the letter from Woody Hicks in the Dec. 11, 2013, edition of The Mechanicsville Local: Thanks for giving me a laugh this morning. It’s always hilarious to see a Republican complain about Democrats who “try to control all aspects of a citizen’s life,” Which is not only far from true, it’s ironic coming from a conservative who obviously wants to control the parts of people’s lives that are none of his business to begin with. Even more ironic is your whining about wanting freedom from bureaucrats while wanting the government (i.e. bureaucrats) to prevent people from doing things that offend your personal sensibilities. It’s really quite simple, Mr. Hicks: If you don’t like abortion, don’t have one. If you’re not gay, don’t marry a gay person. But you don’t get to whine about “freedom to live as you see fit” while trying to take away other people’s freedom to live as they see fit, simply because you don’t agree with whatever their lifestyle might be. Until conservatives learn that simple truth, they are

merely bullies, to be treated with the disdain they deserve. And while they may win elections in pockets of gerrymandered conformity like Hanover, they will keep losing state-wide and national elections, by ever-larger margins, because their bigotry and hypocrisy is not compatible with a nation built on true freedom. Church sends care packages to Marines overseas Couple inspired to make Christmas special after learning about some serving with little or no contact from home

on and Lisa Blake recent packed Christmas care packages for 13 U.S. Marines on active duty in Afghanistan. According to Don, the Packages contained several kinds of snacks, socks, a Holy Bible and other items, including many handmade Christmas cards and notes addressed to “Dear Marine” or “Dear Soldier”. “As I sorted through the open-faced children’s cards and notes,” Don said, “I read many of them. They pulled at my heart and I thought it would be nice to take photos to show to our church congregation in hopes that others could be touched and encouraged to reach out to our many military men and women serving around the world; most espe-

cially during this Christmas season.” He described the cards as “touching in their own special way.” The Blakes attend Winn’s Baptist Church in Hanover County. Don said that Jim and Karen Caskey have two sons serving overseas. Their son Nathan

had shared with his parents that some of his teammates have little or no contact from home. “So he wondered if they could get some of the Winn’s Church members to send some Christmas cards to Nathan to pass out to his teammates,” Don said. The congregation responded in what Don

called “a very short time” and 13 Marines serving our nation half a world away from family and friends at Christmas are receiving care packages. While Winn’s Baptist did its part this Christmas, Don did note that this may inspire other churches, groups or individuals “to reach out to our troops.”

Reader: Party devalues Obama (Editor’s note: The following letter is in response to a recent letter to the editor from Tom Jernigan.) The Tea Party, by all intents and purposes, was established to devalue President Barack Obama’s administration. Notice the disrespect of not addressing him as President Obama because of their strong dislike, yet he was elected president of the United States of America twice. It was former President Bush who caused the Free Enterprise system to go into a Depression. It was President Obama who saved General Motors and other big businesses from going completely into an economic depression. This kept a lot of human beings from suffering a great deal. You talked about the Black Panther Party, you need to read or view the true story entitled “Twelve Years a Slave” or read or view “Bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church,” which killed four innocent young

African-American girls worshipping in their own church. You talk about the deaths at Benghazi, but who made the decision to go to war with Iraq and Afghanistan? It was none other than former President George Bush who used false intelligence. I notice you pick and choose parts of President Obama’s administration on which you base your right wing views of division. Yet, the last time I checked, the economy has grown under President Obama and even the deficit was cut in half faster than expected. You stand in front of the White House with the Confederate flag because of the color of his skin, you insinuate that that he was not born in the United States, but U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada, is acceptable and was not scrutinized. You say the president wasted millions, but, just recently, you shut down the government and threatened to ruin the good credit rating of the United States. Yet you say you are fiscally sound. Many people died in order to establish the 1965 Voting Rights Act, yet you want to make it more difficult for

and, yes, miracles. We believe in them around here. As for gifts, no one has to remind me or my daughters of the amazing one we have year-round in Jack. But this year, we counted our blessings in degrees, and, in the true spirit of

people of color to vote because they do not accept your views. What happened to the statement “of the people, by the people and for the people?” On your talk about gun rights, no one is saying to change the United States Constitution. President Obama is saying gun checks should be like getting a driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. It appears that it is easy to place negative views when you operate with dislike for an individual; therefore, telling the truth is not in the Tea Party’s DNA. In the history of the United States, it has been shown that when there is an issue that promotes equality for all, there is always a force to remind us that equality is only for a few and not all of us. Yet this same history has shown that Americans, regardless of their color or heritage have fought in every war that the United States has engaged in without turning against the country that did not accept them as American and, to this

the season, our prayers were answered when it came to Jack’s treatment. Jack is excited about Christmas, but just as pleased about wearing tennis shoes on both feet again. He takes nothing for granted. Neither should we.

day, they still believe in the American spirit and dream. John Boyd Mechanicsville

Reader: one manger at a time Every winter, atheists fight another kind of cold war — against Christmas. It’s their busiest season in the clash against religion, as they feast on small town displays and school pageants. This year is no different for groups like the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). And while they succeed in pushing the occasional baby Jesus from the manger or “The First Noel” from the choir play list, more cities are learning to stand up to the bullies at the gate. We have been giving our rights away for years, and it’s about time that communities and church leaders all get together and start taking our country back.” One manger at a time. Kenneth Hawk Mechanicsville

So, we can finally get to the important stuff. As Jack puts the final touches on our Christmas tree, my girls are tweaking their lists to Santa . . . and we’re finally in the spirit of the season. And me . . . I’m the luckiest guy in the world.

Being inclusive during holidays There are many reasons I say “Happy Holidays!” The main reason is to include the many possible holidays that occur during this time of year. I do not like to assume that the person I am greeting necessarily celebrates Christmas or is Christian, as I have friends from many faith traditions and beliefs. Many other holidays can or do occur during this time, including Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanzaa and New Year’s. “Happy Holidays” joyously embraces all these holiday traditions. When someone says “Happy Holidays!” or “Merry Christmas!” to me, I accept it in the generous spirit with which it was intended. By the way, the only “War on Christmas” I have noticed exists on Fox “News” and in the mind and words of the incredible (used as the word was originally intended) Sarah Palin. So, Happy Holidays, Mechanicsville! Judy M. Thomas Mechanicsville

Nurses organization recognizes delegate Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The Virginia Nurses Foundation (VNF) recently named Del. Christopher K. Peace, R-97, as a VNF Friend of Nursing at their 2013 Gala. This award acknowledges his sponsorship of legislation that protects nurses working in Virginia correctional centers. It follows the successful passage of HB 2065 during the 2013 General Assembly session. Peace’s bill protects the Department of Corrections (DOC) contractors, such as nurses and other medical practitioners which are directly engaged in the care, treatment, or supervision of persons in the Department of Corrections’ custody from

assault. Assaulting a DOC contractor will now be a Class 6 felony, with a sixmonth mandatory minimum; the same penalty for assaulting a DOC employee. Previously, it was PEACE a Class 1 misdemeanor. “I am proud to have supported legislation which protects nurses working to provide needed health care services in the DOC system,” Peace said. “It is an honor to be recognized by VNF.” According to its website, the Virginia Nurses Association

(VNA) established the Virginia Nurses Foundation to continue programs of support and innovation for nurses and nursing in the Commonwealth. The mission of the VNA is to promote advocacy and education for registered nurses to advance professional practice and influence the delivery of quality care Peace’s commitment to the successful passage of HB 2065 supports one of the VNA’s primary goals — to ensure a positive legislative and regulatory climate for nursing practice. To learn more about VNA, visit: http:// www.virginianurses.com. Peace represents parts of Hanover and King William counties and all of New Kent County.

FSA announces 2014 acreage reporting dates By Ken Upshaw County executive director Producers now have until Jan. 15, 2014, to report crops that have a Nov. 15, 2013, reporting deadline without paying a late-file fee. Crops under this waiver include pasture, forage, and improved grasses intended for grazing or haying. The Risk Management Agency (RMA) did not grant a waiver so producers need to consult their crop insurance agent for deadlines for insured crops. In order to comply with FSA program eligibility require-

ments, all producers are encouraged to visit their local county FSA office to file an accurate crop certification report by the applicable deadline. Other crop reporting deadlines are: Jan. 15 – Fall seeded small grains, apples, peaches (pasture, hay, other forage this year only). May 15 – Cabbage (planted March 16 through April 15), spring oats, potatoes and tomatoes (planted April 10 through May 15). June 15 – Beans (planted see FSA, pg. 17

Virginia529 works with the GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program Inc. (GRASP), a college access provider, to implement the SOAR Virginia program in the Richmond area. “SOAR Virginia is unique in that it combines the hands-on services of access providers with the financial incentive of a scholarship,” Mary Morris, Virginia529 CEO, said. “Together, they increase students’ likelihood of success once in college, particularly for those who are the first in their families to attain higher education.”

Shanice said she initially didn’t understand the significance of her participation in SOAR Virginia. It was only later, as she learned how the $2,000 scholarship would help her with tuition obligations, did she realize its value.

The oldest of five children, Shanice said she also appreciates how the program is helping her siblings (one also is a SOAR Virginia scholar) reach their goals. Students at participating schools are eligible to join the program in the tenth grade. If they participate for three years and meet all the requirements, they can earn up to $2,000 in college scholarship funding. More than 600 students in 30 schools from Lee County to the Eastern Shore participated in SOAR Virginia last year. After expanding the program to new schools this fall, program leaders expect nearly 1,200 students to participate in 2013-2014.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m., an “Ashland First Thursday” reception is scheduled. The Three Abstract Visions show, featuring works by Amy Harris, Paul Germain and Nol Putnam, continues until Saturday, March 1. Harris applies oil paint to synthetic paper. Her work is described as being “fully composed into something mysterious, having no distinct imagery. The mind, however, flows from experiences of the past, and often imagery and emotion are inevitable when viewing her non-representational art.” Germain is said to investigate “our connections to the natural world using gestural, multi-directional brushstrokes, mark-making and surface texture.” He works with oil paint, sometimes with the addition of wax and gold-leaf, on gessoed mouldmade paper prepared and mounted to hang in relief without formal framing. Putnam is a blacksmith and photographer. He said his ideas are rooted in mythology and in chil-

for a day at the dog park. Hanover County already has one established dog park located in Ashland’s Taylor Park. However, according to Arnold Farber, a representative of a nonprofit group that calls itself Friends of Hanover Dog Parks, there’s demand for one closer to Mechanicsville. “There are a lot of dog owners here in Mechanicsville,” Farber said, adding that Ashland’s park attracts visitors not only from across Hanover County, but also from King William and Henrico counties and the cities of Petersburg, Hopewell and Richmond. The idea for the new dog park grew out of conversations among those who, after regularly using the Ashland park, began helping take care of it. Eventually, the group sought and gained 501(c)(3) nonprofit status so they could pull together money for a second park, Farber explained. Since then, the group has tried to

They’ve placed donation jars at a variety of businesses and even offered special training classes to help dogs learn some of the basics of obedience that will serve them well in a dog park setting. It will take about $25,000 to build the dog park that Farber and the rest of the group envision. While that may sound like a lot for a pack of pooches, Farber said the required elements of a safe and engaging play space for dogs can get expensive quickly. Topping the list of expenses will be the two chief needs: fencing and extending running water. Donated fencing is very welcome, Farber said. Also in the works are a shed, signs, benches, water fountains and a pool area where dogs can splash around and cool off. Farber said the group has raised about $3,000 for the project so far. Luckily, a place to put the park, which could have driven costs even higher, came for free. According to Farber, Hanover County Parks and Recreation donated a little more than an acre of land in Pole Green Park near the equestrian area, across from some horseshoe pits and a baseball field. The lot, half wooded and half clear, will provide different terrain for dogs to explore. About 28 volunteers, including several Boy Scouts, braved the cold to clear brush and debris from the area on Dec. 7, Farber reported. summer, but also said that might be an ambitious goal. After all, progress will depend solely on funds and other help the group is able to collect in the coming months. Farber noted that the fundraising effort also has helped the group with outreach and education on a subject a lot of people don’t know much about. “Dogs are pack animals and they really get an enjoyable situation at a dog park,” Farber said. Dogs come alive as they realize they can run free, he added, and benefit from socialization with other animals they can’t get in a fenced-in backyard. Farber, who has a 100-pound German shepherd named Smoke, said dogs of all sizes play together surprisingly nicely in dog parks, with the bigger dogs often deferring to smaller friends’ large personalities. “Most people’s fears are they might fight,” Farber said. “But what you find is that the people there are very aware

Hanover boys handle Raiders in 83-68 win By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local The Atlee boys’ basketball team had a puncher’s chance heading into Thursday’s rivalry matchup with Hanover. And while the Raiders threw everything they had at the Hawks, the visitors absorbed every blow and came away with an 83-68 victory. Sophomore guard Jalen Elliott and junior center Cutch Ellis carried the load for the Hawks, with Elliott staking his team to an early lead and Ellis coming up big down the stretch. Both players recorded double-doubles, with Elliott tallying 33 points and 10 rebounds and Ellis adding 21 points and 20 boards. Elliott “played a totally complete game,” Hanover coach Darren Thornton said. “He got everybody involved, he hit the boards. He played a great game today. He had a good feel for the game.” Elliott scored 15 of the Hawks’ first 27 points as Hanover (5-2) raced out to a 27-7 lead early in the second quarter. Atlee (2-4) had a difficult time dealing with the Hanover press without starting point guard R.J. Jenkins, who was in Louisiana attending his sister’s college graduation. “Our point guard wasn’t here,” Atlee coach Philip Reynolds said. “Not that that

first half, with Atlee only pulling as close as 10 points late in the second quarter on a Jarris Hendricks 3-point play. Brian Miller brought the Raiders closer in the second half, scoring

seven consecutive points to cut the lead to 58-49 near the end of the third quarter. “They did a good job of slowing us down a little bit with their zone,” Thornton said.

He’s working hard and doing the things that are necessary to help us.” Miller led Atlee with 30 points, going 18 for 23 from the free-throw line, and his five rebounds tied for the team lead with Andrew Foster and Stephen Hurd. Fast pace suits Atlee in victory over Hanover By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local In a game in which neither team had much interest in slowing things down, the faster pace seemed to suit the Atlee girls’ basketball team just fine. Ashley Weaver had 21 points and Cierra Shelton added 19 as the Lady Raiders protected an early lead with relative ease in a 51-41 victory over Hanover Thursday night. The Raiders are now on a modest two-game winning streak after knocking off Varina for their first victory earlier in the week. “We just needed to get the first win, and then we got the second win here,” Atlee coach Michael Rawlings said. “I think the girls feel like they can play against most teams. I’m still trying to work on their confidence, but winning builds confidence, so we’re taking it one step at a time. One game, one win.” The Hawks (1-6) managed just two points by Sarah Belcher in the first quarter as they struggled to get into their offense against withering Atlee pressure. They had one big run left in them, and it came right at the start of the second quarter

as Sarah Wright scored five of the first nine points to cut the Lady Raiders’ lead to 13-10. “It’s important to us to get out to a quick start every night,” Rawlings said. “When we have a slow start, it works against our confidence a little bit. We’re a pretty young team, so any time we get out early, the girls feel like they can compete and they play even harder.” Then, just as soon as the run started, it was over. Atlee’s Alyse Armentrout made one of two free throws to stop the bleeding and Jamari Blackwell converted a layup off a steal on the press. It was all Weaver from there/ The sophomore scored nine unanswered points as the Raiders (2-3) opened up a 2510 lead. “We were way too passive against the press early,” Hanover coach Mike Rohr said. “You’ve got to give them credit. They did a really good job and we didn’t make some adjustments we needed to quick enough. It hurt us early.” Hanover closed to within single digits twice in the second half, but each time, Atlee’s Cierra Shelton was there to hit a big shot. She was the only offense for the Raiders for a stretch spanning the end of the

really well in the second half. I thought we played with a lot more guts in the second half.” Wright led the Hawks with 15 points, including the team’s only two 3-pointers, and Belcher added 12. Aside from those two and Atlee stars Weaver and Shelton, no player on either team scored more than four points. Weaver had nine rebounds to lead Atlee and Blackwell keyed the Lady Raiders’ press with five steals. “Jamari Blackwell had a number of steals that helped us a lot in transition,” Rawlings said. third quarter and beginning of the fourth, scoring 11 consecutive points to stake Atlee to a 42-26 lead and effectively ending the game. “Momentum ebbs and flows during the course of a game,” Rawlings said. “It’s confidence,

the ability to make a shot and feed off others.” And that confidence came from defense as Atlee kept Hanover off the scoreboard for the first half of the fourth quarter as Shelton and Weaver did their work.

Despite the final margin, Rohr was pleased with the way his team fought in the second half. “If not for the first quarter, we played right with them,” he said. “We just didn’t come out very well, but we executed

Chargers dash around Cavaliers in 2nd half By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com King William High School’s boys’ basketball team played a tough first half against Middlesex High School last Tuesday night, but the Cavaliers could not keep up the momentum in the second half as the Chargers took control and raced to a 59-33 victory. King William fought Middlesex to a 12-12 standstill the first quarter, but the Chargers began to pull ahead in the second quarter. While they had a 26-20 lead at halftime, Middlesex head basketball coach Jason Williams was not happy with his team. “I got into them in the second half,” Williams said. “We came and regrouped, and got up to the board and drew up some stuff that would work. And we came out in the second half and executed well.” What the Chargers executed best was a press defense that the young Cavaliers found hard to handle. King William coach Joe Harper knows learning to handle the press is one of the growing pains his team has to go through. “We’re on this path – we know what that path is,” Harper said. “With youth, you’re going

If the guy beats you, hey, move your feet and get back on defense.’ ” The Cavaliers, finding it hard to get inside, resorted to outside shooting, but had trouble converting attempts into points. Michael Johnson led King William with nine points. Middlesex’s Marquez Holmes scored nearly as many points as the rest of the Cavaliers combined, netting a game-high 21 points. The Chargers’ Jacob Self was the only other doublefigure scorer with 10 points. Harper said the Cavaliers

Fractions separate teams at L-D gymnastics meet By Paislee Winkler For The Mechanicsville Local Lee-Davis High School and Patrick Henry High School learned how much every point can count in a gymnastics meet at Stonewall Jackson Middle School Wednesday night. Less than three points separated the top three teams in the meet, and an eighth of a point separated the second-place Patriots from the third-place Confederates. Deep Run High School placed first overall with 135.8 points, followed by Patrick Henry with 133.7, Lee-Davis with 132.9, and Varina High School with 118.3. “This was the first real meet with plenty of competition. I think we now know what we need to focus on,” said LeeDavis head gymnastics coach Cy Witherow. “We are hoping to make a lot of improvements over winter break.” Lee-Davis gymnast Madison Godsey – with the help of top finishes on the balance beam and in the floor performance – finished first in the all-around

individual standings. Godsey said that her floor routine was one of her weaker performances, as her score was five points less than she scored in a meet last week. She said the event was difficult as she is recovering from fractures in her wrists. Witherow disagreed with her assessment. “Maddie can be hard on herself, but I am pleased with her performance,” Witherow said. Deep Run finished first in team standings despite just having one first-place finisher – Megan Craig in the vault. But Wildcats finished in the top three in every event and took two of the top three places in the uneven bars the uneven bars. “Individually we didn’t have one person outshine anybody,” said Deep Run head gymnastics coach Karen Wright. “But as a team we really pulled together.” While teamwork usually pays off, team members can be adverse influences on each other, too. In Patrick Henry’s case, several Patriots struggled in the balance beam and uneven bars.

Mechanicsville’s Molly Breidenbaugh, a senior at Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond, proved she was one of the best high school runners in the country by earning a trip to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, which were held at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday. Breidenbaugh was not happy with her performance, which was 39th out of 40 runners. “I went out a little too fast for me, and unfortunately, I

died,” said Breidenbaugh, who has committed to William and Mary. “I look at this as a learning experience. Just getting this opportunity is really amazing.” To make matters more difficult, the running course featured a big hill the runners had to run up twice. Of course, the competition was pretty strong, too. “At the national level, everybody’s really fast,” Breidenbaugh said. “Everyone is just as good as you if not better.” Nevertheless, Breidenbaugh – the daughter of Philp and Chris Breidenbaugh – remains

among the nation’s best – only the top 10 runners from each of four regional events earned the all-expense paid trip to San Diego. “That’s an elite group,” said Lee-Davis coach Neil Mathews, who knows Breidenbaugh and often catches her running with her older brother, Marc, on the cross-country course at Pole Green Park. “Every coach hopes that maybe one kid that they ever coach – just one – will make it there to San Diego to run in the Foot Locker nationals. It’s like the holy grail of high school cross country.”

On a day when Mechanicsville’s weather was rainy and cold, Breidenbaugh was enjoying the coastal climate of Southern California – what she described as “70 degrees and perfect.” Breidenbaugh found more than the race and weather amazing. “We’re staying at this really nice hotel called the Hotel del Coronado,” Breidenbaugh said. “My parents were saying that rooms go for, like $300 to $1,000 a night – because it’s right on the ocean – depending on where the room is. It’s so cool.”

OKMS 5K promotes health awareness, raises funds The 2nd annual Oak Knoll Middle School 5K was held on Nov. 23 to promote health awareness and to raise money for the school. About 150 walkers and runners took part. To begin the 5K, participants said the Pledge of Allegiance and then the National Anthem was sung by eighth grade language arts teacher, Daisy Ashford. The OKMS cheerleaders spurred on runners and walkers from the sidelines with cheers, chants and posters. After the event, a celebration was held in the cafeteria to honor all of the participants and to award medals. Medals were presented to the top five students, the top five students from each grade level, the top five staff members, and the top five community members. In addition, a variety of raffle prizes were awarded to the walkers and runners. For example, participants had chances to win frozen yogurt, a teeth whitening session, exercise classes, free pies, and even Thanksgiving turkeys! There were thirteen students who ran faster than Principal Caroline Harris, and these students received free ice cream for a week. The winners are: Top five OKMS students —Jacob Mast, first; Nathaniel Goode, second; Drew Hulbert,
