Supervisors ask state for county’s share of funding By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local When it comes to local governments and legislative agendas, the rule of thumb is the earlier the better. Members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors got the jump on that process as they met with their state representatives at Randolph-Macon
College on Thursday. Del. Christopher Peace, R-97, and newly-elected Del. Buddy Fowler, R- 55, attended the session in the new Brock Commons Student Center. Senators Walter Stosch, R-12, and Ryan McDougle, R-4, also attended. Angela Kelly-Wiecek, chair of Hanover’s legislative committee, and county attorney Sterling
Rives outlined the county’s list of legislative priorities for the upcoming General Assembly session. Some issues are of statewide interest and represent the views of the Virginia Association of Counties, but others are specific to Hanover. Hanover County, like many see FUNDING, pg. 5

Community Service support program gets new pavilion
C
lients of the Day Health and Rehabilitation Program offered by the Hanover Community Services Board have been able to enjoy the recent fall weather in a new pavilion. Made possible by the efforts of county employees and a number of businesses that made donations, the clients can sit outside on six new picnic tables under a picnic shelter. The area is handicapped-accessible. Old Church Boy Scout Troop 531 constructed the picnic tables and three planters for the clients or employees who want to work on horticultural projects. “Now our program participants don’t have to be transported to a park if they want to enjoy the outdoors,” said LaVerne Smith, program coordinator. “We can grill out and enjoy the weather right here, the pavilion is equipped with electricity and everyone whether ambulatory or non-ambulatory can enjoy it.” County personnel constructed improvements over a number of months using savings
realized from the move of the program into the old Mechanicsville Library in 2010. Those affiliated with the Day Health and Rehabilitation Program extended their thanks to the following individuals and groups for their help or donations: J.D. Duvall, Scout Master with Old Church Troop 531, for hard work constructing the picnic tables and planters. Pattie Bland and Ray Lefler of the Master Gardeners for helping plant the mums and shrubbery. Colesville Nursery for their donations of shrubbery and pansies. Berry’s Produce for donating mums, pumpkins, straw and cornstalk. Sandy’s Plants for donating pansies. Ashewood Gardens for their donations of cornstalk, pumpkins and mums. Little Five Azalea Farm for their donation of mums. Hanover Produce for their donation of pumpkins and straw. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.

Virginia jurisdictions, is struggling with the implementation of Department of Environmental Quality required total maximum daily loads remedies to protect and improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. South Anna representative Wayne Hazzard said retro-fitting the county’s systems could cost $1 to $2 million annually. Hazzard said measuring those results also is tricky and likened it to hitting a moving target. Supervisors asked their state
representatives to seek funding options to assist localities with the Chesapeake By regulations, many of them required by July 1. Kelly-Wiecek said initial grants and alternative funding are assisting in the first years of implementation, but worried what would happen when those funds are exhausted. “While grants may be a good start, it’s not an ongoing source of funding for this,” Kelly-Wiecek said. “We’re looking for some source of ongoing funding for this.” Supervisors have expressed repeated concerns that the
TDML regulation could cost county taxpayers millions of dollars. Hazzard suggested delaying the deadlines for implementation until a clear picture of the problem can be established. “All’s we’re asking is that if we can’t get the funding, then maybe we should put a delay on the legislation or do something to make so that it makes sense. I want to make sure the citizens of Hanover County are not dumping $100 bills into the Bay,” Hazzard said. Peace said the legislation was intended to provide localities with choices and flexibility

side students in Karen Priolo’s class as they colored special holiday cards. The cards will eventually be sent to deployed troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and other far-off locales, Bolling told the students, as part of a Red Cross program called Holiday Mail for Heroes. American Red Cross CEO Reginald Gordon and the Bollings appeared at the local school to kick off the 2013 campaign. Bolling told the children cards don’t need to be fancy to make a difference for soldiers who are separated from their families. “They’re gone sometimes for a long time, and that’s tough,” Bolling said. “And it’s really hard when you’re gone for the holidays.” “Just say whatever you feel like saying to them in your heart,” Bolling said. “It’ll really help make their holiday a whole lot better.” Students took his advice, drawing turkeys and Santas alongside messages of thanks. Most of the children finished more than one card during Bolling’s visit. “I hope you have a great holiday and have a great day and thank you for helping us and you deserve a card,” Kaylee Coons wrote. simple “Thank you for saving our country.” Principal Dana Jackson told the class they aren’t the only budding artists who will be sending a little happiness overseas. Every student at Washington-Henry will create at least one card for the program. The Bollings joked and laughed with the kids, who, as they often do, said the darndest things a time or two. When Lt. Gov. Bolling asked the class if anyone knew how many cards were sent through Holiday Mail for Heroes last year, Julie Bateman raised her hand. “A googleplex!” she shouted, getting a big laugh from the class. (For the uninitiated, a googleplex is the largest number that’s been given a
name – a 1 followed by a googol zeros. A googol is a 1 followed by 100 zeroes.) While Bolling acknowledged that a googleplex of cards would be nice, the program did succeed in sending 4 million cards last year. Later, Jean Ann read the students a book called “My Sailor Dad,” about a child whose father is deployed on an aircraft carrier. When she asked if students knew how many people serve on a single aircraft carrier, Bateman piped up again. “A googleplex!” Want to contribute a card or two? Supervisors chairman Canova Peterson said he understands that in theory, but added, “We have to pay the bills.” Hanover is asking the state to “provide a substantial and fair share of the funding required to implement these programs.” The supervisors also expressed a desire that the state continue to fund its share of Virginia Retirement System contributions for state funded teacher salaries, and asked its legislative team to request that

Being thankful and we have many reasons While there’s no question that our country is at a crossroads in many ways, we as Americans still have so many reasons to be thankful as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving. Regardless of political bickering and ongoing turmoil in other nations around the globe, we remain the greatest land and the world leader. We unite in times of trouble, considering the way we rise to the occasion when our fellow Americans are impacted by issues like weather conditions that we can’t control. Sadly, there are many who are in need and we are fortunate to have so many organizations that work year-round to provide meals. Thanksgiving baskets have been and will be distributed throughout Hanover County and our region to ensure a hearty dinner for our neighbors to partake in the traditional feast. Circumstances vary from household to household as we struggle to come back from a suffering economy. But, nonetheless, we will remember those who settled here and joined with Native Americans in this special observance — one steeped in history. It isn’t just about turkey and dressing. It’s about those who settled what has become the greatest country in which to be born or seek citizenship. We have an enviable strength as we move forward. And we can do so with a grateful heart this year. Happy Thanksgiving!

Employee defends treatment and care of chimpanzees I would very much like to invite everyone who knows nothing about chimpanzees or how to care for them to just stop talking now. They’re gone. You succeeded in your goals. You chased them out, destroyed a family and upset many, many members of our community. Could you just now stop making asinine comments about their health and well being? You’re really annoying those of us who do know something about these amazing creatures. Why do you think “they settled in so well” at the Houston Zoo? Because of the outstanding care they received here. Abused and neglected animals don’t settle well anywhere. The experts all agreed. The chimps here were happy, healthy and extremely well cared for and should have been allowed to stay here. Please stop trying to make it sound like they were abused and living in squalor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Thank you. Morgan Sams Property manager Windy Oaks Animal Farm Mechanicsville

TEA Party does not exclude anyone from meetings (Editor’s note: The following letter was submitted in response to a letter from Judy Thomas.) I am a member of a TEA Party organization and I’ll try to explain to you that we are not racist nor homophobes and we do not exclude anyone from our meetings (as long as they are there to learn). To prove we aren’t racist we recently endorsed Bishop E.W. Jackson, a black American Patriot. The definition of a phobic is someone who is afraid of someone or something. We do not fear a gay person, we pity them and pray for their redemption. We may not understand them, but we don’t fear them. When we marched on Washington, D.C., to demonstrate our disgust with administration policies, there were Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, blacks, Asians and Native Americans among us. All that wanted to participate did so and without objection. To remind you, we were 2 million strong! We used to be known as “The Silent Majority,” but now we’re the TEA Party and Washington is taking notice. We’re
not dead, we’ve just been “jumpstarted.” Now let me explain our position. After reading these bullet points perhaps you’ll have a change of heart. I sincerely hope so, because we need all to join us against this regime. This list outlines why we object to the way Obama and his Progressives (their word for Socialist) are functionally destroying (not changing) our economy and freedoms. His administration directed the IRS to target conservative organizations to either delay or restrict applications for tax free status. The IRS is supposed to be a non-political branch of government. How can we trust them if they’re not? And especially when they’re supposed to control funding of ObamaCare and all the personal data therein. His administration was responsible for gun-running weapons to Mexican drug cartels. The NSA is gathering our personal emails and phone conversations under his direction, without justification or jurist prudence. He’s been using millions of our tax dollars to “invest” (his word for redistribute) in failed solar panel companies. Propping up his union cronies by bailing out Chrysler and General Motors with our tax dollars. ObamaCare has cost our nation millions of jobs and caused hundreds, if not thousands of companies to reduce their workweek by 27.5 percent (40 hours to 29). This not only hurts a family’s income, but reduces funding of Medicare and Social Security. And the latest foobar is the inability to even apply online for it. He and his Attorney General [Eric Holder] refused to prosecute the Black Panther thugs that threatened bodily harm to potential voters at a Philadelphia voting precinct. And, of course, there’s the ACORN corruption, which encouraged illegal voting procedures. Increasing our national debt by trillions – and it’s still see LETTERS, pg. 8

When she offered to bring her fifth graders out to help with National Collection Week, the church was pleased to have them, she said. Brenda Evans of New Bethesda Baptist Church, who has worked with Operation Christmas Child since her church’s first collection 17 years ago, said she has traveled to Ecuador to put the boxes in the hands of needy children. “We are so blessed here, Evans said, adding that the living conditions of the children who receive the boxes are nearly unimaginable to most average Americans. “Once you get involved in it, you can’t get away, Evans said, adding that she’ll keep participating as long as God calls her to do so. In 1996, the first year the church participated in the program, they collected two boxes. In 2012, the church processed a whopping 23,475 boxes. This

Students from Liberty Christian School laughed and smiled as they scurried back and forth with stacks of boxes so high their faces were partially covered on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the New Bethesda Baptist Church. The church’s education center was transformed Nov. 1825 into a collection center for contributions from several local counties. Donors brought boxes full of donated gifts for sorting and shipping as part of Operation Christmas Child, an annual toy distribution effort organized by the evangelical aid organization Samaritan’s Purse. The students showed up to lend a helping hand with the massive collection of thousands of boxes of toys for children around the world. “Every child deserves a gift, Jeff Berger, a regional manager for Operation Christmas Child’s mid-Atlantic region, told the students. “It’s not about whether they’re good or bad, it’s about the fact that Jesus loves us. Berger related a story about a 10-year-old boy in a Third World country who was known for misbehaving, but still received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox during a distribution event. When the child opened his box, which was full of tools, he began crying, Berger said. “For weeks, he had tried to fix the roof on his house and didn’t have the tools to do it, Berger said. “God is using these boxes in ways we may never know. Liberty Christian School’s National Elementary Honor Society sponsor Susan Jenkins said her school had been vis-

kinder letter. The most delightful letter I have ever read to an editor is that by Thomas F. Cox. His thoughtful, well-considered and charming tongue-in-cheek letter regarding the theater issue was filled with paradoxical statements and thoughtprovoking humor. His English teacher would be proud, but I am encouraged when I see a teenager address a community issue and take the time to outline the concerns. My only criticism is the editor’s choice to title it Support voiced for theater. Please read his letter again. Thomas F. Cox has no intention of working at the theater and does not support the plan. He is destined for much grander accomplishments. I hope he writes more letters about more issues. He made me laugh out loud. Thanks. Thomas. Patricia Lassiter Mechanicsville
not enough! Why doesn’t he propose a budget? Could it be because he doesn’t want to divulge what he’s doing with it? His energy policies have caused prices to skyrocket, both fuel and food. He and [former Secretary of State] Hillary [Clinton] failed to protect the lives of Libyan Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and his protectors in Benghazi. His AG filed lawsuits against states that were just trying to enforce immigration violations that his administration refuse to. He and his administration were the cause of sequestration and the most recent shutdown of our economy. When anything goes wrong with anything, it’s always someone else’s fault. He never accepts blame! The buck never stops at his desk! Transparency? What a joke! Cover-up after cover-up after cover-up! No one gets fired or disciplined for any reason. unions, homosexual groups and billionaire radical leftist supporters. The phony Libertarian candidate, Robert Sarvis, was bankrolled by one of President Obama’s biggest fundraisers in order to draw votes away from Ken Cuccinelli, which he certainly did. And the lies that the Democrats put out on the airways about the Republicans being anti-women, which so many foolish women fell for, was unbelievable. Who could be more antiwomen than Terry McAuliffe who whole-heartedly backs this disastrous ObamaCare, which will cost thousands of women’s and men’s jobs, will cost thousands of women and men to lose their health insurance, and many of those who are still able to get insurance will have to pay two and three times more than they are now paying. And who could be more anti-woman than McAuliffe and the Democrats who whole-heartedly back the murderous practice of abortion, where thousands of little female babies – potential productive, loving women – are killed every year? And back to health care. Obama stood before the cameras many times and told the American people, “You can keep your present health insurance if you like it, period.” Does it remind you of another Democrat president
who looked into the cameras, shook his finger and said, “I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky?” And not only did the Republican ticket have the Democrats on their back, but they also had a number of RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) to contend with. Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling was the worst. He stood on the sidelines disgruntled and vindictive, never backing the Republican ticket but sniping at them throughout the whole campaign. He cared more about his own interests than the good of his party or especially the good people of Virginia. I hope he’s happy that he helped elect a liberal governor. Some of Bolling’s statements against the Republicans were used by McAuliffe in his campaign ads. The things Bolling said against E.W. Jackson, the great Christian gentleman who is highly educated and fully capable of being lieutenant governor, were disgraceful. Some people have foolishly said that if Bolling had been the candidate for governor the outcome would have been different. Nothing could be further from the truth. With the kind of character that he displayed during the campaign, Bolling isn’t fit to hold any office in Virginia. The Republicans are talksee LETTERS, pg. 13

Stevi B’s taking part in Toys for Tots campaign Stevi B’s Pizza, a pizza buffet restaurant in Mechanicsville, has announced its participation in the Toys for Tots campaign. From Nov. 25 through Dec. 13, all 49 Stevi B’s restaurants will have collection boxes to accept brand new unwrapped toys on behalf of Toys for Tots. The toys will then be distributed as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. As an added incentive, each person who drops off a brand new and unwrapped toy will receive more than $20 worth of savings in coupons from Stevi B’s. Local Toys for Tots campaigns are conducted annually in more than 700 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The organization’s goal is to help less fortunate children
throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas, and to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign. “Stevi B’s Pizza is honored to partner with the Toys for Tots campaign, an organization dedicated to `playing an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children,’“ said Matthew Loney, president and CEO of Atlanta-based Stevi B’s Pizza. “We are a family-oriented business, and we believe our children are our greatest asset. Giving back to the neighborhoods we serve is one of our top priorities as a brand.” For more information, visit www.SteviBs.com or contact Stevi B’s by email at info@ SteviBs.com.

Authorities are investigating a message scrawled in a bathroom at King William High School that threatens to “kill everyone.” The message was brought to the attention of the school’s principal about 10 a.m. Thursday,
said King William County schools Superintendent Mark Jones. Officials said they are taking the message seriously and will be adding security at county schools today and next week. The message, written in a boy’s bathroom at the school, says, “I will kill everyone.” Written below the threatening words is Monday’s
date. Beside the message is a crudely drawn symbol that authorities said they do not recognize. King William sheriff’s Lt. Tim Hixenbaugh said he has sent a picture of the symbol to law enforcement officials nationwide to see if anyone recognizes it. Authorities on Thursday were

Peterson said the board has not formally discussed yearround sessions. Kelly-Wiecek said she thought the county would not be in favor of the full-time policy due to the tourism concerns. “Our region is comprised of fantastic companies that make the difference,” Matthews said. As for Hometown Realty, he pointed out that the company has 225 agents throughout the Metro Richmond, Charlottesville and Northern Neck areas, making it one of the largest residential real estate operations in the region. Offices are located in Mechanicsville, Ashland, Rockville, Tappahannock, Twin Hickory, Chesterfield, Ruther Glen, Prince George and Charlottesville. Matthews also told the crowd that the company is active in Hanover County, its home base, providing scholarships and helping raise money for the Hanover Education Foundation. In an interview after the awards ceremony, Chenault said his company’s agents are the key to its success, both in business and in community involvement. “Our agents make a difference – and they don’t just make a difference in getting you a house. They make a difference in our community every day,” Chenault said. “Our agents just really care about where they live.” Chenault pointed to a recent food drive as an example of the kind of giving Hometown agents are capable. A request for the state to consider changes to the Freedom of Information Act to allow more than two members of a board to meet without declaring a formal session remains on the county’s legislative agenda. Peace reflected Hanover’s request at a recent FOIA Advisory Council to no avail and no action was taken, so the item seems doomed —at least for this year’s session. Since only three of the board’s seven members attended the special meeting, a quorum was not present and no official action was taken.

After a staff meeting at FeedMore headquarters, the agents set up a friendly competition between the offices. “We said we wanted to raise 50,000 meals,” Chenault said. “We did 76,000 meals. We crushed it.” Chenault noted that the company’s Ashland office, which is one of its smaller branches, led Hometown in collections for the drive. Company-wide, he said Hometown Realty hopes to raise 100,000 meals for Feedmore. “We’ve just got such great people. We’ve got people who work well together and like to work with each other,” Chenault said. “Our agents got that award.” Other honorees Businesses with locations in Hanover County either received awards or were nominated for honors. Those included: SweetFrog, which has locations in Hanover County among its more than 300 stores worldwide, was nominated for an Innovation Award. Rainbow Station, which has a location in Mechanicsville, was nominated for an Impact Award, the chamber’s premier annual award, in the large business category. The Impact Awards recognize companies not only for growth and economic impact, but for community contributions, contributions to their employees’ quality of life and/or innovating in their respective industries.

In other legislative measures, the county asked its representatives to consider amending the code to disallow the subpoena of witnesses within five days of a court case unless it is issued by a judge Hanover’s concerns are focused on some teachers who are called at the last minute to testify in cases, leaving administrators scrambling to cover those hours. McDougle said that approach is unworkable and would add additional expense to court proceedings. “This solution is not workable as presented.” The meeting did provide a preview of what educational issues could top this year’s General Assembly agenda. games and enjoyed the interaction and relationship building with the buddies, the coaches and other players, the league quickly grew from one team, to two teams, to three and then four full teams.” A special part of the program is the win-win relationship the players have with their “Buddies” who assist the players during practices, on the court during games and on the bench as needed. “The Upward Challenger ministry has taught me more than I ever thought I could learn,” Challenger volunteer Christine Ward said. “Not only have I been blessed with the opportunity to work with such talented and

Additionally, during the summer, Cool Spring Baptist Church (whose Recreation Ministry oversees all Challenger
activities) opened its Rec Center to host Challenger players and their siblings for fun games and activities while parents enjoyed some much needed “free time.” “The most impressive thing about the Upward Challenger Sports program is that the people involved not only talk about unconditional love, but they demonstrate it in all aspects of the program,” Suzan Jeantheau said. “It’s great to have my child play a sport, but it is more important for her to know that she is loved for who she is. Atlee wins rematch with Douglas Freeman By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch Last year, when Atlee High School went 5-5, the Raiders didn’t have much swagger. But that’s changed now. The secondseeded Raiders won their ninth consecutive game, 24-10 over Douglas Freeman High School in the second round of the 5A South playoffs Friday night. “We’re different from the old Atlee Raiders,” lineman Alec Eberle said. It’s the new quarterback, Reid McCoy, who brought a dose of energy to the team. “He brought the attitude.” McCoy scored two touchdowns and ran 10 times for 37 yards. Lamont Stubbs added 94 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Loumond Dandridge picked up 46 yards on the ground. McCoy, a senior, is in his first year at Atlee. He spent three years at Glen Allen and was the Jaguars’ quarterback in the program’s first season. He moved into the Atlee district and won the starting quarterback position after a preseason battle with Travis Barton. Switching schools was no big deal, he said. “From the beginning, they treated me like family,” McCoy said. McCoy had big shoes to fill. Past Atlee quarterbacks Drew Ferguson, Ruben Rucker and

this year. Atlee made significantly fewer mistakes this time. And its defensive line consistently put pressure on Freeman quarterback Kyle Farkas. The Raiders sacked him eight times. With its top two running backs out with injuries, Freeman went with its large, physical senior, Christian Cozens, who carried 25 times for 81 yards. With as many as two fullbacks in front of him, Freeman repeatedly pounded the ball. Cozens’ second-quarter touchdown made the score 7-7, to the reputation, Raiders coach “He’s just a team player, that’s but that was as close as Freeman got to the lead. The Raiders reclaimed the lead, which they never relinquished, on a 22-yard run by McCoy. Cozens rushed for only 10 yards in the second half. Freeman ended its best season since 1980, when the Rebels went 10-1-1. Like Atlee, the Rebels were one of the area’s most improved teams after going 6-4 last year. Atlee, which has never won two consecutive playoff games in school history, will have its toughest test of the season next week in defending state champion L.C. Bird. “It means the world to this community and this high school,” Johnson said.
Titans put stranglehold on Hanover’s season By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com NORFOLK – Hanover High School never seemed to have a chance. The Hawks faced Lake Taylor High School, a defending state champion, in a Virginia High School League Region 4A South second-round playoff Friday night, but they never seemed to quite be in the game. The Titans were just too tough, putting a stranglehold on Hanover’s offense as they coasted to a 35-3 home-field victory. Third-seed Lake Taylor next visits second-seed Dinwiddie in this Friday’s region semifinals. Hanover, seeded No. 11, managed 97 yards passing and finished with minus 3 yards rushing. Seven of its offensive drives ended in punts, two in turnovers. Only one ended in a score – a 35-yard field goal by Will Pittman. Hanover head coach Derek Stoudt credited Lake Taylor’s defense with shutting the Hawks down. “They bring a lot of pressure,” Stoudt said. “We had to figure out ways to counteract that pressure. … We figured out ways. [They kids] hung in there, they hung in there tough. We figured out ways to get the ball, we figured out ways to pass the ball.” The problem was, however, that when Hanover (6-6) found something that worked – like quick passes across the middle – the Titans (10-2) found ways to stop it. “We looked at what they did last week against Churchland and against some other teams during the year,” said Lake Taylor coach Hank Sawyer. “We wanted to take that away from them and force them to throw the football. They threw it pret-

ty well at times, but we had to keep the pressure on them.” On the other side of the ball, Hanover struggled to find ways to stop Lake Taylor, which amassed 382 total yards on offense. For example, the Titans’ starting quarterback Shiheem Johnson missed much of the
first half after injuring a leg early on. Backup quarterback Nhyre Quinerly stepped up, however, to throw for a touchdown, run for another, and – once Johnson returned, catch a 23-yard pass for a third. Johnson completed 13-of18 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. Quinerly complet-
ed 4-of-8 passes for 80 yards – including a 58-yard strike to Aaron Chandler to put the Titans on the scoreboard first – and he caught six passes for 106 yards. Lake Taylor scored again on Quinerly’s 3-yard run in the second quarter, but settled for six points when the point-
after attempt sailed wide left. Pittman kicked his field goal for Hanover just before halftime to make it 13-3. Early in the third quarter, Johnson connected with Quinerly for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Again, the Titans’ point-after attempt failed, so they settled for a 19-3 lead.
Lake Taylor put the game away with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The first came on a 2-yard run by Desmond Palmer, followed by a successful 2-point conversion pass from Johnson to Jalyn Holmes. The second came on a 1-yard run by Johnson, followed by another successful 2-point conversion pass from Johnson to Palmer. Despite the disappointing finish for the Hawks, Stoudt praised his team. “I just want to keep it focused on the kids and how hard they played throughout the whole thing,” Stoudt said. “The attitude of these kids is outstanding. The effort these kids gave is outstanding.”

Atlee earns return ticket to state title game Mark Gormus/Times-Dispatch
By Billy Fellin Richmond Times-Dispatch Once again, the Atlee High School Raiders find themselves one win from the state girls volleyball championship. The opportunity presented itself for the second consecutive season after the Raiders dispatched Broad Run High School 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 2520 on Thursday morning at the Siegel Center in the Virginia High School League Group 5A semifinals. “Of course, I like the outcome of the match,” Atlee coach Curtis Carpenter said. “Broad Run was solid, and we expected that from them.” The first set was reminiscent of the sets the Raiders played against Princess Anne High School in the 5A South final, with many back-andforth points swinging momentum. In the first 25 combined points, there were 19 ties or lead changes. Three consecutive kills from Clarke Tyler and another from Maddie French put Atlee ahead 23-22 in the first set. But, Broad Run’s Elise Dumouchelle scored a kill, followed by a Spartans ace and another kill to win the set for Broad Run 25-23. “I thought we came out a bit more nervous than I would have liked to,” Carpenter said. “We were the more experienced team coming in. We played more nervous than they did. Maybe that was the result of Dave Lawrence/The Local that first set.” Atlee’s Rachel Stanford (seated, center) committed to play women’s volleyball at Catawba College. After a Tyler kill set up match point, Broad Run scored four consecutive points to cut the lead to 24-20. But, when the serve on the fifth set point went into the net, Atlee punched its ticket to Saturday’s 7 p.m. final against Stone Bridge High School. “We fell just short every time this season, but we kept on fighting,” Spartans coach Ellen Roberts said. “The girls played well and there’s nothing to be upset about.” Broad Run 25 19 19 20 Atlee 23 25 25 25 Highlights: Taylor Austin (BR) 20 digs; Katie Maloney (BR) 36 assists, 11 digs; Molly Jarvis (A) 7 kills, 5 blocks; Lauren Stanford (A) 6 digs; Emalee Martin (A) 5 blocks, 3 digs. R-MC women off to strong start; men struggle By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com November was an unpleasant month for last year’s RandolphMacon College women’s basketball team. November is treating this year’s team pretty well. The Yellow Jacket women went 0-5 at the start of their 2012-13 season. But, with an 82-65 victory over visiting University of Mary Washington Tuesday in the first game of a basketball doubleheader in Crenshaw Gymnasium, they began their season with three straight wins. They added a 92-73 victory over Marymount Thursday night. Junior guard Sarah Parsons led Randolph-Macon with 18 points and three steals in Tuesday’s contest against the Eagles. She was followed by Taylor Huber with 18 points, and Lauren Vugteveen and Hannah Livermon with 11 points apiece. Vugteveen also had seven rebounds. The Yellow Jackets (4-0) dominated the first half, but early in the second half Mary Washington fought to within four points. Randolph-Macon head coach Carroll LaHaye called a timeout. “We were kind of letting up on defense,” Parsons said. “In the huddle we just said we had to focus in on defense and just get stops. With those stops came some fast break points and turned the momentum around.” Once the Eagles (2-1) lost their grip on the momentum, they saw their chance for a win slip farther and farther away. “Randolph-Macon had control of the tempo the whole game,” said Mary Washington head coach Deena Applebury. “Every time we would collapse [our defense], they would kick it out and hit a 3. When we
lead the Yellow Jackets pat Marymount Thursday. In addition, Anderson claimed a double-double with 13 rebounds. Despite Andre Simon’s double-double, the men could not pull a win against Christopher Newport in the nightcap of the basketball doubleheader Tuesday. Simon scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but the Yellow Jackets fell to the Captains 84-83. Randolph-Macon (1-2)
struggled to stop Christopher Newport’s offense, especially in the final two minutes when it counted most. Simon put the Yellow Jackets’ ahead 83-81 with a layup with 1:34 remaining. Luc Atangana tied the game for the Captains with 1:11 left. After a Randolph-Macon turnover, Simon was called for a foul to send Evan Thorpe to the line with 4.4 seconds left. Thorpe sank one of two free throws to give Christopher Newport the win. “I don’t think we played perfectly offensively, but we shot 44 percent from floor, 36 percent from the 3-point line – which is pretty good – and 72 percent from the free-throw line, then gave up 84 points on our own floor,” said Yellow Jacket head coach Nathan Davis. “We lost because we’re not stopping people. We’ve got to find a way to stop people.” Christopher Newport head coach John Krikorian said the Captains had to find a way to overcome their height disadvantage. “We’re pretty undersized,” Krikorian said. “With teams like Randolph-Macon who are big and can punish you inside like were doing, we’ve got to counter that by putting players on the floor that they can’t guard on the perimeter. … Our game plan was to spread them out and attack the basket.”

Not just players: Powers, Spiller enter hall of fame By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Mechanicsville’s Bubba Powers would have loved to see the party they threw for him, his friend Benny Spiller and a few others last week. Powers was a lifelong softball player. He, along with childhood friend (and Mechanicsville resident) Benny Spiller were among seven individuals and one team inducted into the Central Virginia Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in a ceremony at The Place in Innsbrook on Saturday, Nov. 16. The venue for the induction ceremony was packed. “It was 300-plus people and every ticket was gone,” Spiller said. “Between [Bubba] and I we had 90 folks.” Powers and Spiller began playing softball while students at J.R. Tucker High School in the 1970s. They continued playing – sometimes on the same team, sometimes on opposing teams – for decades until Powers’ death of a heart attack in 2004. Spiller’s serious playing days ended in 2001 as the demands of a new family claimed more and more of his attention. “I just broke down and cried,” said Powers’ widow, Debbie, of when she learned of the decision to induct her husband. “It was something that I’ve been hoping and praying for for a long time, not only for Bubba, but because of our kids.” The kids – Brandon and Cody Powers – are carrying on their father’s legacy on the diamond. Brandon coaches and Cody plays for Lee-Davis high school. Spiller’s children have also followed in their father’s athletic footsteps. His daughters,

of beer stashed in the dugout between plate appearances – the pair were part of a dedicated cadre of serious players who spent weekend after weekend on the road at tournaments during the season. They played for some of the
best teams in the nation, such as the 1992 Hanover Carpet team that won the Amateur Softball Association Class A national championship. One of their teammates on that 1992 team, Mike Fritter, was also inducted
into the Hall of Fame in last week’s ceremony, where they join a host of other teammates – including Powers’ father and the manager of the 1992 team, Danny Powers – who have previously been inducted.

It takes more than athletic achievement to make it into the Hall of Fame, and Powers and Spiller had ample contributions to take into account. In addition to their considerable playing achievements, both did their share of umpiring – 21 years for Powers and 15 for Spiller – and both branched into officiating at high school and college basketball games. Spiller still works as a basketball official today. “The time, the effort, the dedication, always being the team player – no individuality,” Spiller said of what it takes to earn Hall of Fame honors. “The stats mean a little bit, but not as much as being a team player.”
