xactly 150 years this month, Union troops commanded by Gen. George Meade were pushing eastward on his Overland Campaign following bitter weeks of fighting at Spotsylvania and The Wilderness. Joined by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Meade was determined to reach Richmond and crush the Confederate capital. It wasn’t Meade’s first rodeo and he was one in a number of Union generals who reached far into Virginia, only to be thwarted and sent packing by determined Rebel efforts. By 1864, those Confederate troops were tattered, their leader suffering from serious medical problems and their supply line stretched thin due to Yankee ambushes. It turned into a battle of giants, and Grant provided the tenacity to continue what was lacking in many of his predecessors and Gen. Robert E. Lee failing to yield but lacking the firepower to counterattack. Whenever Lee would repel the advancing troops, Grant would regroup, move to the east and strike again. At a small site on the North Anna River in Hanover County, the Confederates perhaps had their last best chance to halt the advance when Meade split his army in to three sections, each separated by small rivers. “Lee had all of his army on one side of the river. Grant’s army was in three separate groups separated by rivers. If Lee would have crossed the river, he would have fallen on one of those three separate entities and probably wiped it out,” David Deal, executive director of the Hanover Tavern Foundation and member of the Hanover County Sesquicentennial Committee, said. Fighting was fierce at North Anna and the Union Army did not advance at that crossing. Meade’s Army of the Potomac eventu-

ally forded the Pamunkey River and entered Hanover, and their drive toward Richmond went on undeterred, on to Cold Harbor and finally Petersburg. “I guess you could call it a strategic victory for the Confederates only because they really caught Grant in a trap, but weren’t able to spring it,” Deal said. The Overland Campaign was one of the bloodiest periods of the Civil War, with Grant

The expanded park features new walking trails, interpretive signs and more than 170 acres of natural beauty. The ceremony marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of North Anna, where Gen. Robert E. determined to reach Richmond and Lee determined to place his army in his way. “The battles were almost ongoing,” Deal said. “They didn’t fight a battle and then retreat. Grant was relentless,” he added. On Saturday, the Hanover community will gather to recognize that battle at the site where it took place, a 170-acre park located off Verdon Road. Officials also will dedicate the newly expanded North Anna Battlefield Park with a keynote address by noted Civil War author and historian Gordon Rhea. The park features miles of walking trails, breathtaking vistas of the river where Union troops failed to advance and historical interpretive signs that tell the story of the battle. OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
Memorial Day: A time to pay tribute
As has been said many times before in this format, we can never repay the debt we owe to our veterans. While Memorial Day primarily focuses on those who gave the ultimate price in serving their country, we also must remember those who face the enemy in far-reaching parts of the world today. Their dedication to our great nation cannot be measured but must be treasured. Most of us have the honor of saluting family members who supported our military, whether in times of war or peace. Their patriotism and love of country are among the greatest sources of pride for us. Hanover County will continue a humble tradition with a Memorial Day program at Hanover Wayside Park. From 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, May 26, Hanover County government provides a solemn observance to remember the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. We encourage you to attend and pay tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedoms. Memorial Day is too often associated with the official start of summer. Swimming pools open, the grills are brought out for cookouts, and family and friends gather for a holiday that means a day off for many in the work force. What should be the No. 1 priority on Monday is remembering those who served and literally gave all. Thank you to county government officials and community leaders for organizing the annual ceremony, which includes a laying of a wreath at the Veterans’ Memorial at the park. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge and send a very special thank you to those who have served or are serving in the military for their part in the program. Memorial Day also means remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. The trek to the cemetery to decorate graves is a must for many. I’m pleased to say that a U.S. flag always adorns my father’s resting place at this time of year. Like his two older brothers, he served his country well. Melody Kinser

A mother’s love, the greatest gift of all By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
At age 44, my life was busily progressing up and down the ladder of success, centered around strategic career moves that would allow me to achieve the success I so aggressively sought. Caregiving was the furthest thing from my mind on the day I got the call from my mother informing me she had been diagnosed with cancer. I took the news in stride, never realizing the life-changing affects those simple words had on my mother ’s life, and eventually mine. A credit to her tenacious nature and irrevocable spirit, she fought the brave fight during the first years of the disease’s relentless assault, and I went on with my life, only briefly inter-
rupting it to take her to an occasional doctor’s appointment. As the months progressed, the disease became more debilitating, and caring for my mother became almost full-time work. I responded by hiring a lady to sit with her during the day, fix her meals, and provide the support she needed. I realized we were reaching a painful emotional intersection, where decisions would have to be made, none of them easy. And the day inevitably came when she could no longer physically keep her house, perform the daily duties of life, and needed full-time nursing care. My sister and I searched facilities in the area, none of which seemed right. Although cancer had ravaged my mother’s frail body, it hadn’t touched a still active and creative mind, and she
made us promise to keep her at home for as long as possible. It was then that I realized the most important question facing us was not financial, but emotional. Protecting my mother’s dignity became top priority, eventually leading to some lifechanging decisions for both of us. So, it was with great hesitancy that I moved home to care for her, taking a leave of absence from work and devoting most of my time to her care. She made the job easy, and it wasn’t many days later when I knew I had made the right decision. Keeping a promise to protect her from the loneliness and desperation of a chronic disease, I kept her at home for more than a year. During that time, we laughed, cried see LOVE, pg. 8

Mother says she is proud of her gay daughter Matthew 7:1-5 ESV “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” I am the very proud mother of two daughters and a granddaughter. My oldest daughter lives with her boyfriend and their daughter and my youngest daughter is gay. I could not be more proud of both of my children. My oldest is very successful, supports herself and her daughter, works in the medical field and helps anyone who needs it. My youngest daughter (who also has Asperger’s) is a junior in high school, has a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) at the moment and takes Advanced classes. My youngest daughter is the least judgmental person I have ever met. She does not smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs. She does her homework, loves school, and is anxious to start college when she graduates.
These letters picking and choosing Bible verses to spew your own agenda about homosexuality are disgusting! I am a Christian and attend church every Sunday. In fact, my gay daughter attends church with me — how do you like that?! Now, I am not perfect nor do I claim to be. honest, I would much rather be friends with gay people than with you Bible-thumping “Christians who choose not to promote love, compassion, grace, mercy, forgiveness — but rather want everyone to live life the way you think life should be lived. Maybe none of you have read the Bible enough. I would encourage you to do so. Eternal life is given simply by believing in Jesus Christ! Let me say this, I believe love is love! We all strive to find love in our lives. For anyone who has found and/or had love is blessed. I do not have the same opinions as you do, but let’s just say
constant in the one role she had mastered and dedicated herself to: being a mother. After providing a lifetime of guidance, an endless multitude of consoling hugs, bandaging too many skinned knees to count and almost never eating a meal sitting down, she
provided her final and greatest gift of all: love in the face of adversity. Those final months allowed me to tie all the loose ends, to get answers to those final few questions I had. It allowed her to keep performing what she considered
her most important role, that of mother. She did that so well her spirit still remains alive in her children and grandchildren not only on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year. And we owe that to one amazing person: our mother.
I did. Did we not just celebrate Easter? On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was put to death. His death paid for all of our sins. Doesn’t that mean that if homosexuality is a sin (as some of you say it is), that it is forgiven? And on Easter, Jesus Christ rose from the dead to prove He was who He said He was, that He could do what He said He could do. Even if homosexuality is a sin, it is forgiven! So, as a good Christian maybe it’s time to focus on helping the homeless, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, donating to the needy. Leave gay people alone! They don’t bother you, quit judging them! Now I have chosen a few Bible verses that maybe you
should each take a closer look at and pray about! I will pray for those of you who can’t see past your nose to spite your face, who judge others and are hypocritical regarding the Bible, church and God! Deuteronomy 22:11 ESV You shall not wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 ESV Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and selfcontrol, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness — with good works. James 4:11-12 ESV Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? Ephesians 4:29 ESV Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear Luke 6:31 ESV And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. Romans 3:23 ESV For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Rhonda L. Kelley Mechanicsville
Republican primary with incumbent Eric Cantor facing challenger David Brat. When I moved to Hanover County in 2005, Eric Cantor seemed like a good conservative. In recent years, I have realized that he talks like a conservative but he doesn’t vote like a conservative. The actions of the Republican Party leadership in Congress was to cave on many issues: debt ceiling increases, funding for ObamaCare, and giving up all spending cuts. Now I have discovered that he is sympathetic towards amnesty for illegal immigrants. If Cantor talks the talk to his constituents but does not walk the walk, then who is his real constituency? I believe it is whoever gives him money. In order to retain his job, he needs money to run TV ads, mail fancy and costly fliers, and pay his high salaried political consultants. In summary, he represents special interests, not us. We need someone to actually represent us in Congress. I believe that person is David Brat. His campaign does not have special interest donors but consists of concerned 7th District conservatives going door to door and phone calling their neighbors. He is a highly educated man with a Ph.D. in economics who understands how an economy really works and how free market capitalism creates prosperity. Contrary to Cantor’s TV ads and fliers, David Brat is a conservative who believes in free markets, fiscal responsibility and limited government. He

Resident: issue with votes cast
Trust lost in Eric Cantor U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R7, has lost my trust. First, he changed an amendment in the bipartisan Stock Act to allow family members to continue to inside trade on Wall Street and now he is on TV and the radio lying about his opponent Dave Brat. If he is willing to cheat the system and lie, then who is to say what else he will do to get his way in Washington, D.C.? Eric Cantor believes he can play by a different set of rules than we can. If I inside trade, I will most likely end up in jail but Eric Cantor’s punishment is to be re-elected? Eric Cantor has been filling the airwaves over the past few weeks claiming that his opponent, Dave Brat, is a “liberal college professor.”
FactCheck.org contacted three colleagues of Dave at Randolph-Macon College. One said that the liberal label “could not be more inaccurate” while another said “the Cantor ad is flat-out wrong.” I was a long-time supporter of Eric Cantor but Eric Cantor has not only lost my trust but he has lost my vote. Dave Brat is running an ethical campaign. He teaches economics and ethics at RandolphMacon and, so far, has just been talking about why he is better than Eric on the issues — not name calling and playing other middle school games. I look forward to casting my vote for Dave Brat on June 10. Catherine Noble Mechanicsville

You’ve seen them: Cantor’s ads make the claim that his opponent, Dr. Dave Brat, is a “liberal professor” who advised Democrat Gov. Tim Kaine on raising taxes. But, what’s the truth? Recently, former candidate for Senate Jamie Radke authored a satirical piece titled “Eric Cantor will be campaigning against Del. Chris Peace!?” In it, she discusses a Cantor ad labeling Peace as a “liberal lawyer.” After all, if Cantor can make the claim that conservative Dave Brat is a “liberal professor” simply because he was appointed to a committee by a Democrat

governor, then doesn’t that logic also apply to Mechanicsville Del. Chris Peace who was appointed by Democrat Gov. Terry McAuliffe to his transition team? Of course it doesn’t! What was interesting was that Peace commented on the article. Regarding his appointment to McAuliffe’s transition team, Peace stated, “When one is asked to serve many feel compelled to that service by a sense of duty and honor as a Virginian.” As for Cantor’s claims about Brat being a “liberal professor,” Peace stated, “Heck, it may be possible that with a seat at the table a conservative could rein in some of the excess. Overall I think the allegations are a stretch. I have known David Brat for a long time and have never thought he is a liberal professor. In fact, his ethics as a seminarian and economist have always been very impressive to
me.” This wasn’t the first time that “conservative Dave Brat” was praised by local politicians. Four years ago, Dave Brat was the invited speaker at the August 2010 monthly meeting of the Hanover Republican Committee. According to Tom White, who attended the meeting, “after the usual pledge, prayer and reading of the Republican Creed, the committee chairman at the time, Angela Kelly-Wiecek — now a Hanover supervisor — introduced Brat and made a big deal about him being a conservative college professor. Kelly-Wiecek was very complimentary to Brat and dwelled on his conservatism and his background as an economist who specializes in ethics — and teaches ethics — at RandolphMacon College. And I was truly impressed at the presentation by Dr. Brat that morning and the time went by all too fast. An amazing conservative who really gets it, I thought.”

Do your own homework Don’t take anyone’s word for it. Do your own homework. FactCheck.org has laid the ground work writing, “The ad takes two independently accurate claims — that Brat served on Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine’s Advisory Board of Economists and that Kaine proposed to raise taxes — but links them in a misleading way to conclude that Brat is a ‘liberal.’ ” The article explains that while Brat did serve on the Joint Advisory Board of Economists (JABE) under Democrat Gov. Tim Kaine, he also served under Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell. Brat did not “advise” either governor on tax policy, as Cantor alleges. Rather, JABE “is a group of professional economists charged with providing national and state economic forecasts. It does not advise on policy decisions about taxes.” (See http://www.factcheck.

My fatigue was so severe that it was all I could do to make it home at the end of the day and crawl into bed. Feeling frustrated and concerned about my health and life, for years I tried all kinds of different approaches, none of them worked! A friend of mine convinced me to give chiropractic a try. I was reluctant at first thinking that chiropractic was only for people with bad backs, but soon discovered that it was so much more… The Chiropractor did an exam, took some films, and then took the time to explain to me that when the spine is not properly aligned it can interfere with the proper function of the nervous system resulting in all types of health problems because the nerve system controls all function of the body. Thatwasthecauseofmysymptoms, imbalances in my spine, which interfered with my nerves. The chiropractor then gently “adjusted” my spine using her hands. The adjustment didn’t hurt, it actually felt good. It made so much sense to me and worked so well that I decided to become a Chiropractor so that I could help people overcome their health challenges naturally, just as chiropractic helped with mine.” Now for Dr. Mike, “I was in a car accident in 1988 that resulted in severe leg pain (sciatica) and low back pain and had also been a migraine headache sufferer since early childhood. After being told
that I may need surgery, I got serious about seeing a chiropractor. My leg pain went away quickly and the back pain all but disappeared. And with regular chiropractic adjustments I haven’t had a migraine headache in years! Melissa and I decided to go back to school together so that we could help families live happier, healthier and more productive lives without having to depend on potentially harmful drugs or surgery for their health concerns.” “What if we had just taken medicine to cover up our symptoms? What would our health be like today? You see, we weren’t content with just eliminating symptoms, we wanted to be healthy and knew that there had to be a natural and safe way to get and stay healthy naturally.” And there is! Our three children also benefit from a wellness lifestyle. They enjoy being checked regularly and “tuned-up” when needed. And they have enjoyed incredibly vibrant health, thanks to good nutrition, lots of love and regular chiropractic care. It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see us with their fatigue, arthritis, sciatica and migraines. They also come to see us for help with back and neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, asthma/
allergies, sports injuries/performance, and poor posture, just to name a few. Some visit our office regularly to naturally promote and enhance the overall God-given health and wellness potential of their entire family and to stay drug-free. Here’s what some of our practice members have had to say: “I am calmer, more patient, in much less pain and my headaches are gone!” –A. Moore “Chiropractic is the best thing I have ever done for myself and my family” -Sherrie B. The body was created to self-heal and selfregulate and it does this through the nervous system. That’s why chiropractic care helps people get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! The studies speak for themselves, like the Virginia study that showed that 99% of patients who saw a chiropractorweresatisfiedwiththeirresults.Another recent study published in the January 3, 2012 issue of the Wall Street Journal showed that chiropractic care and exercise were almost twice as effective as OTC and prescription medications for neck pain. That’s just incredible! Many Americans are finding that their insurance
benefits are being reduced. That’s where we come in. We have cost effective fee plans so that more people are able to afford the corrective care they need with or without insurance. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can enhance your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, flues, and other sicknesses. Studies also show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor regularly. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer- Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to find out if you might benefit from chiropractic care. *When you make an appointment before June 6th, you will receive our entire new patient exam for only $25! That’s with x-rays (if indicated), functional testing and a report of your findings…. the whole ball of wax. This exam could normally cost you over $200. We simply want you and your family to get checked to discover if chiropractic can help—and we don’t want price to be the reason you don’t. We provide specific and measurable results!
We are MATHES FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC “Healthy by Choice!” Call us at 746-5700 for your appointment. Sincerely, Drs. Mike and Melissa Mathes and the Mathes Family Chiropractic Team *Due to Federal regulations we are unable to extend this offer to recipients of any Federal Health program, such as Medicare.

Don’t drag Bible into letters After reading Beth Cox’s letter in a recent Mechanicsville Local, I needed to say something. I’m put out by people who respond to a difference of opinion (an unpopular difference of opinion, by the world’s standards) by saying, “I don’t agree with that interpretation of the Bible.”
What Beth is really saying is, “I don’t believe what you believe.” That’s fine, but please don’t drag the Bible into it. I think all of us are well aware of the many verses that can be used to support or trash anyone’s opinion. I’m only interested in studying God’s word and praying for understanding. The Bible is pretty clear that we are to love others the way we love ourselves. Let’s face it, some of us weren’t raised in ideal homes and we don’t know how to love ourselves, much less anyone else! However, getting to know God and reading his word, we know God is love and judgment. He is holy. We are not. We need Him to live a better life and if you are a Jesus is God’s son Christian, you believe by His grace you are saved from eternal damnation, provided you come clean with Him and ask forgiveness for your sins.
Beyond that, it gets murky. There are some definite Scriptures that seem pretty clear to me, but they raise all kinds of ire and ruckus when presented in the context of the political issues we are dealing with today. I am reminded of former President Bill Clinton’s faux pas when he was trying to rationalize to the Grand Jury his obvious lie about his relationship to Monica Lewinsky: “It depends on the meaning of the word ‘is.’ ” Seriously? God was pretty clear that all sin is equal in his eyes. A sin is a sin. So a person who steals and doesn’t come clean and make restitution is as bad as a murderer. Unless, of course, we are now at the door of the next obvious dilemma, “homosexuality isn’t a sin.” And, in that case, there is no use discussing it further. I think we can see clearly
from Scripture like isn’t supposed to “lay down” with like. You fill in the blanks. I don’t know how to make it clearer. As far as anyone going to hell, hold on! God is the judge, not us. I have dear friends and family that deal with homosexuality. That is between them and their God, not me. I have my opinions and I have studied Scripture and I feel fairly confident in my train of thought, but I love my friends and family. The only issue I have is the gay lobby that is politically active in Washington, D.C., trying to cram their agenda down American’s throat. There are some dangerous things happening in our nation’s courts that have been championed by the Obama administration and the gay lobby. The military is trying to deal with the destruction of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which worked
well for many years. DADT was put in place to protect gays and straight military personnel. We now are dealing with open homosexuality with no idea of the consequences from retention to recruiting. That is only one aspect of the Obama Administration’s “new and improved” ideas for American culture. Civil Rights used to mean that all races and creeds are equal and deserving of enjoying the same civil rights. This doesn’t include sexual differences, i.e., sexual orientation. This is another lie of the gay lobby in Washington. We are now faced with the assertion that being gay means certain civil rights, earned by courageous people of color, such as the right to sit at the same counter in a restaurant, are now being compared to being gay and somehow discriminated against, simply for their sexual
orientation. Therefore, there are many actions in the courts now stemming from this idea — for instance, unisex bathrooms in elementary school. I have grandchildren in elementary school and this concerns me — a lot! It should concern everyone. I think we need to be clear about what civil rights are, and stop trying to change the legal meaning of the phrase. Beth, I think in the context of what we are talking about, there is much more at stake than you seem aware of. I’m concerned about the agenda being pushed in our public schools and colleges, and the obvious attack against people of see LETTERS, pg. 19

Polling place move to be topic of supervisor’s town meeting Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
Angela Kelly-Wiecek, who represents the Chickahominy District on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, will hold a Community Meeting to discuss moving the Shady Grove voting precinct from Washington Henry Elementary to Northside Baptist Church. The meeting will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, in the Washington Henry Elementary School library. During the town hall-style meeting, KellyWiecek said she will give an overview of the proposed move and address the benefits of relocating the Shady Grove precinct. Representatives from the Registrar’s Office, School Board and Sheriff ’s Office will be on hand to help answer questions. Kelly-Wiecek said the majority of the meeting will be dedicated to a question and answer format. “We generally experience high turnout in the Shady Grove precinct. I greatly appreciate the recommendations of our Registrar and
Electoral Board, and having worked this precinct for a number of years, I am sensitive to the challenges it presents,” Kelly-Wiecek added. “The Shady Grove precinct has seen a number of changes over the last three years, and this has created some confusion. Prior to making a final decision, I want to both answer questions and receive as much input from citizens as possible. Voters must be able to easKELLY-WIECEK ily and efficiently exercise their civic duty without unnecessary confusion, and I want to do everything possible to assist.” The proposed change will impact citizens living in Crown Colony, Royal Glenn, Berkley Forest, Avondale, Robin Ridge and Swananoa Estates, among others. While this meeting is targeted to Shady Grove voters, Kelly-Wiecek said all Chickahominy residents are welcome to attend.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Layla, 359961, is a 3-year-old female Siamese cat. She has had her first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Layla is a beautiful Siamese kitty. She is a little timid because she has not been handled very much but she has gotten much more comfortable with everyone at the shelter. She will need some TLC (tender loving care) but she is expected to become a great cat. Jackson, 358610, is a 2-year-old male hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. He is your typical, lovable hound dog. He is very playful outside in the yard and he loves playing with his dog friends. Jackson is learning his commands and already knows how to sit. He might do best with someone who can take him for long walks to let out his energy. He loves meeting new people. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://www.hanover.co.va.us/anmlctrl.

A graduate of the Hanover County Citizens Academy, Bourassa expressed a desire to continue his involvement with Hanover schools even though his son graduates in June. “I don’t feel like my involvement has been completed,” Bourassa said. “I am passionate about Hanover County and maintaining its excellence in the public schools.” Randy Sherrod, president of the Friends of Hanover Schools, publicly endorsed Millican at the meeting, citing his years of service and dedication. “On behalf of Friends of

Hanover Schools, I am honored to endorse Glenn Millican for reappointment to the Mechanicsville District seat of the Hanover School Board,” Sherrod said. “We’ve been impressed by the thoughtful questions Mr. Millican asks when presented with tough issues such as budget policy decisions. He’s very engaged.” Peterson asked the nominees to provide resumes and biographical information, and said he would meet with them during his decision-making process. “There are a lot of fine nominations here tonight,” Peterson said. “Obviously, I’ve got a lot of research to do in getting to know all of you a little better. Free roses to be given to honor veterans Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
Hanover Audiology is participating with The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation (a nonprofit organization partnering with civic groups, florists and retailers) to place long-stemmed roses on 150 additional headstones at Arlington National Cemetery this Memorial Day. To show appreciation for the United States and to honor
those who have served, Hanover Audiology also is offering free long-stemmed roses to anyone in the local community who wishes to place a flower on the grave of a fallen veteran. Each day, men and women venture out directly into harm’s way to protect Americans’ freedoms. The friends and families of these brave men and women are at home and worry for their safety and anxiously wait for the
day that their loved ones return home safely. Flowers play many roles in everyday life: They are an extension of people’s emotions; they say “I’m thinking of you;” they express comfort during loss; and they provide the final polish to a memorable event. This Memorial Day, longstemmed roses will play a very significant role and show that veterans and their families have not been forgotten and what
they have sacrificed for the nation. Hanover Audiology is located at 7484 Lee Davis Road (Suite 10) in Mechanicsville. Flowers will be available starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, with 250 being available. Those who don’t have a deceased family member who is a veteran are still welcome to take a flower and decorate the grave of any veteran to remember them.
Tomato Un-Cookoff to be held evening before festival On Friday, July 11, Hanover County Parks and Recreation will host the Tomato Un-Cookoff. Competitors will uncook off head to head to transform the famous Hanover Tomato into tantalizing tomato recipes. All underground chefs (supper club,

are endless. The Tomato Un-cookoff will be held at from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pole Green Park at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville. In addition to the un-cookoff, there will be live musical entertainment and vendors. see TOMATO, pg. 28

An Ashland woman has been charged with child neglect following an incident that occurred on Sunday in the 7200 block of Bell Creek Road. Megan L. Toomey, 31, of the 11400 block of Karen Drive in Ashland was taken into custody around 4 p.m. by deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. She has been charged with one count of felony child neglect. According to Lt. Chris R. Whitley, speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, the suspect left her 9-year-old son
unattended in a locked vehicle, a 1999 Infiniti four-door, for about 20 minutes while shopping at the Bell Creek Road location. Whitley said the juvenile was seen by a concerned citizen who contacted the Sheriff ’s Office. When deputies arrived, they located the mother who had TOOMEY already returned to the vehicle. The lieutenant said the juvenile was
found to be sweating profusely and in distress, so Hanover Fire-EMS was summoned to the scene. The child was evaluated by Hanover Fire-EMS, but did not need to be taken to a hospital. Child Protective Services was contacted and the child was released to the custody of a family member, Whitley added. “Fortunately, a tragedy was avoided,” Whitley said. “We hope this serves as a reminder to everyone of how dangerous it is to leave a child or pet inside of their vehicle for any period of time, especially as summer approaches,” he added.

Degree in Civil Engineering, followed by graduate studies in structural design. His studies at Virginia Tech were briefly interrupted, as Mc served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a civil engineer and surveyor. In 1970, he began working with the Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC), eventually retiring as their chief engineer. Mc’s line of work kept him out-of-doors, something he greatly treasured and enjoyed. On July 16, 1948, Mc was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Chesapeake Masonic Lodge #158, A.F. & A.M., and thus began a long-time commitment and dedication to Freemasonry. Among other ways, he served this Lodge as treasurer and Worshipful Master in 1953. In 1981, Mc held the highest office in the Freemason

For that year, he coined the slogan, “We’ll have FUN in eighty-ONE!” Other highlights and memberships of his Freemason involvements include, Jewel Royal Arch Chapter #49, past District Deputy Grand High Priest, past High Priest, past treasurer; Malta Commandery 24, Past Commander; Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, 32nd Degree Knight Commander Court; and Khedive Temple in Norfolk. Mc was extremely active in his community, including a lifelong dedicated membership in the Market Street United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities throughout the years. One article, written about Mc and published in the Eastern Shore News,

ended with a quote by him, “When the wind doesn’t blow, I am fishing.” He did love and enjoy that time on his boat, “Jingle Bells,” and perpetually trying to catch “the big one.” Mc was affectionately accused of “fishing for a living, and surveying as a hobby.” Mc is survived by two children, Spencer McMath “Penny” Rogers Jr. and wife, Carol, of Wilmington, N.C. and Temple Rogers Richardson and husband, Rick, of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Morgan McMath Rogers, Shawn Thomas Richardson and wife, Heather, and Sara Temple Pierce and husband, Zechariah; three great-grandchildren, Spencer James Richardson, Keelin Noelle Pierce and Henry Graydon Pierce; two sistersin-law, Harriet Scott Brockenbrough of Mechanicsville, Va. and Jean Tankard

Scott of Onancock; and five nephews. In addition to his loving wife of almost 68 years, and his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Benjamin Willard Brockenbrough Jr. and James “Holland” Scott Jr. A memorial service was held at the Market Street United Methodist Church, on May 17 with the Reverends Robert M. Chapman II and G. Wayne Parsley officiating. Private interment with Masonic Rites will be held at the Onancock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ROGERS, the Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market St., Onancock, Va. 23417. Patrick Henry hits stride after spring break By Josiah Turner For The Mechanicsville Local
After losing a close game to Deep Run High School earlier this season, the Patrick Henry Patriots went into Friday night seeking revenge. With the help of solid pitching by sophomore William Strong, the Patriots got it against their visitors, shutting out the Wildcats 5-0. Strong struck out nine and gave up only two hits in earning a complete-game victory. The only underclassman on the Patriots’ varsity roster has been everything head coach Sam Hart could have hoped for. “Willie, what a game from him,” said Hart. “He’s thrown really well for us this year, and as a sophomore. … We’re looking forward to having Willie around for a little bit.” Not only did Strong pitch an efficient game, but he also helped the Patriots and himself offensively with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. He finished with three RBIs on the night. Patrick Henry (11-5) is on a four game winning streak and has won eight of their last nine. Hart believes his team is beginning to turn the corner. “We lost to Mills Godwin right before spring break, so we had a little meeting afterwards, after the meeting we discussed our main objective was to play

better baseball after spring break,” said Hart. “I think we’ve achieved that objective. … I think we’re playing good baseball right now.” Deep Run (7-9), on the other hand, has endured a few frustrating weeks. They got off to a 7-3 start this season, but have now dropped their last six. “We started off really hot and really well, had a couple games that we were ahead and we gave up, and I think mentally that kind of puts you down a little bit,” said Wildcats head

coach Josh Aldrich. “But our kids, we’re resilient, we’ll keep battling as much as we can. … We either pitch it well or hit it well. We’ve got to get it together.” Aldrich did acknowledge that the Patriots are playing well as a team. “We played well. They played very well. They had beautiful plays to combat what we were going to do offensively,” said Aldrich. “My hat’s off to a bunch of guys who play very, very well together. … They have fun, and you can tell, they talk a lot and
they’re very well coached.” Patrick Henry’s Tyler Starling scored two runs and was one for three at bat, while Chesdin Harrington also went one for three and had an RBI. With just about one week remaining in the regular season, Hart is excited about his team’s chances in the upcoming tournament. “We’ve got two more games, and then we’ve got a conference tournament starting next Friday,” Hart said. “The kids feel good and I feel good about the direction we’re going in.”
The Deep Run Wildcats has some fight in them, but Patrick Henry High School had staying power. The visiting Wildcats came from behind to tie the Patriots in the top of the third inning, but Patrick Henry took control in the bottom of the inning and kept adding to its lead to claim an 113 softball victory over Deep Run Friday. Candace Whittemore was the primary reason for the Patriots’ dominance. The pitcher struck out 10 and added four hits in four atbats with a double, a stolen base, three RBIs and two runs scored herself. While Patrick Henry coach Shelby Webb said it wasn’t their best game, it was a better performance than the Patriots’ first outing against Deep Run. “Last time they jumped up
and got runs on us early and we had to fight our way back,” Webb said. “It was really good that we were able to come back and get on top early and keep putting runs on. It was good to see our progression from where we were at the beginning of the season to where we are now.” Deep Run’s offensive numbers were nearly as good as the Patriots (11-1). The Wildcats (7-6) had eight hits – two apiece from Sarah Commons, Baylee Grandstaff and Berkeley Matthews. Both Commons and Grandstaff both scored runs, and Commons added an RBI. But the Wildcats could not string enough hits together to get more runs over the plate. Even worse, a few defensive lapses gave a big boost to the Patriots’ already solid offense. “They’re a good hitting team and you can’t make see TAME, pg. 37
Last-minute change pays off for Lee-Davis By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com
Weather has taken a toll on spring sports this season. As the season has been winding down, teams have been hoping to make a lot of games up. When the weather last week failed to cooperate, Lee-Davis and Hermitage high schools moved their baseball game up from Thursday to Wednesday. The move paid off – for the Confederates. They got a solid start from pitcher Joey Pride, and will more solid performances by relievers Justin Sorokowski and Cody Powers and solid hitting throughout the batting order, they beat the Panthers 8-2 at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park. Because of the limited number of outings for most of his pitching staff this season, LeeDavis head coach Kenny Lewis
said the Confederates planned to use all three pitchers against Hermitage. “Our plan was to go threetwo-and-two – Joey three, Justin two and Cody two,” Lewis said. “But Joey was throwing well again and it was four, five-nothing, so we went one more. But those other kids needed some work, desperately needed some work. So I’m glad they got some work in.” Sorokowski also provided some offense, getting two doubles in four at-bats for two RBIs and a run scored. Haiden Lamb had three hits in his four at-bats, with a double and two runs scored, and Adam Trice had two hits and scored two runs for the Confederates (10-5). “They came out hitting the ball a little bit and they put the two-spot up in the first inning,” said Hermitage head coach Will Hicks. “And we just couldn’t

L-D’s Sorokowski keeps cap size in check By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch When Lee-Davis baseball player Justin Sorokowski committed to Florida State in January, two months before the start of his sophomore season, he put a target on his back. He identified himself as the batter opposing pitchers work the hardest to get out and the pitcher coaches watch for in the bullpen. As a freshman Sorokowski was a solid, if not underrated, player. He hit .301 and had a 1.64 ERA on the mound. Now a sophomore, he’s one of the area’s most highly regarded players. “I’m not fazed by a lot of
pressure,” Sorokowski said. “I know people like to talk about me. I don’t listen to it. I just go out and play.” His commitment to Florida State isn’t the only reason his profile has grown. His stats are part of it, too. Sorokowski, 16, is batting .474 with 13 RBIs and 14 runs. He plays third base when he doesn’t pitch. He has had only eight innings on the mound this season. But he’s 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA. The success of Joey Pride (who has a 1.38 ERA) and numerous rainouts have kept him from pitching more innings. Sorokowski was scheduled to pitch out of the bullpen Tuesday night against Hanover. But the game
was pushed back multiple times because of lightning and eventually canceled for the night. Sorokowski says he’s eager to get more time on the mound. “He’s got baseball in his blood,” Lee-Davis coach Kenny Lewis said. “He’s passionate about the game. That really shows. He desperately wants to win.” Sorokowski’s father, Dave, grew up in Miami and was drafted by the Yankees out of high school. He declined the professional offer and went to Florida State. His career was cut short by an arm injury his sophomore year. Justin was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When he
was 4, his father’s job at Brown Distributing brought the family to Richmond. Justin chose Florida State not just because his father played there. He still has plenty of family in Florida. “It’s like a home away from home,” Sorokowski said. He may pitch or play infield, or do both, for the Seminoles. Despite his status as a future Division I player, Sorokowski doesn’t act above his teammates, Lewis said. Lewis pointed out Sorokowski’s good grades and behavior. “He’s an excellent teammate,” Lewis said. “He roots for everybody. When he has a teammate on the mound, he’s pulling for him more than anyone.”

Atlee takes advantage of Jaguars’ zoned-out defense By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com
Dave Lawrence/The Local
Atlee High School’s boys’ lacrosse team did not give Glen Allen much of a break when the Jaguars came over for a visit Wednesday night. The experienced Raiders squad jumped out to a big lead early and coasted through much of the rest of the game to a 17-5 victory over the still-learning Glen Allen team. “It was pretty much a team effort tonight,” said Atlee midfielder Alex Jones. “It was pretty much like all of us playing together. Tonight it really wasn’t about our star players. It was about all of our roles as a team together. We passed the ball real
well tonight.” To illustrate the collective effort, consider Atlee’s scoring: Ryne West and Eric Peck got three goals apiece for the Raiders (10-2), who also got two goals apiece from Davis Hatch, Kevin Lawlor, Dylan Rice and Booth Watson. Connor Saul had three assists, with Phillip Sening, Lawlor and Peck adding two assists apiece. Glen Allen head coach Chris Kanauss said the Raiders were in control throughout. “The Atlee Raiders held the ball, controlled the pace of the game, and had our defense very tired throughout the third and the fourth quarters.” Jones said Atlee took advantage of the Jaguars’ defense.
Atlee’s Chris Green kicks up a lot of dust after winning a scrum-style faceoff in the Raiders’ 17-5 boys’ lacrosse victory over visiting Glen Allen Wednesday. Atlee won 21 of 25 faceoffs that night.

Bowman picked up volleyball in her freshman year at Lee-Davis and took to it immediately. Four years of high school play and club travel ball attracted colleges such as Guilford to have her play at the next level.

Jessica Smith (Wally); five greatgrandchildren, Rachel, Haylie and Evan Striano, William Tate and Brody Smith; and sister, Joyce Vaughan. Welford was born in Hanover County, and after serving in WWII, settled in Richmond. After a successful career with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, he focused much of his time on his passions for real estate and his garden, both which were a tremendous source of pride. He touched many people throughout his long life. He was a charter member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church, and a member of Hanover Ruritan. The family would like to extend a special thanks to his caregivers, Keisha Francis, Ginger Bower and Roxanne Elliott who not only took care of his daily needs, but showed love and kindness. The family received friends on May 18, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Services were held on May 20, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church, 8016 Atlee Rd. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, if your finances seem like they are in a state of upheaval, it could be because you have not looked at everything in black and white just yet. Make some changes.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 This is a time to discover the value of others, Libra. A willingness to try new things and delegate some responsibilities will free up your calendar.
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 A rush of activity fills your calendar and keeps your phone ringing off the hook, Capricorn. Your challenge will be separating the pressing events from others.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, if you’re not careful, you could find yourself debating family and friends this week. Instead, try to sit back and listen rather than fostering debate.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 You come on too strong sometimes, Leo. Those who know you best can handle this approach, but you can scare off potential new friends if you do not ease up.
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Certain personalities don’t always click, Scorpio. Don’t feel the need to overcompensate for a strained relationship. Spend more time with those with whom you connect.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, paperwork has built up and requires more time than you had originally planned. There is no way to avoid this task, but a helper can make it move more quickly.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a realization about what is really important to you instills a renewed sense of confidence this week. You will be focused on important things.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Be patient and do not demand too much of yourself during the next few days, Virgo. You need to keep your workload light; otherwise, you may get easily overwhelmed.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Flexible thinking is key, Sagittarius, especially as you face a few new challenges this week. There are some opportunities to reconnect with family later in the week.
PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Moderation is your mantra for the week, Pisces. Do not let the pendulum swing too far in either direction.
