Shirley Smith of Mechanicsville, shown with her husband R.J., has grown what may be the first red Hanover tomatoes of the season. When asked what the secret to her success is, Smith said, “I just put them in the ground and let God take over.” Her husband said Smith’s green thumb is because she’s a farm girl. In addition to tomatoes, Smith is growing collard greens, yellow squash, zucchini squash and snap beans in the couple’s plot in Cool Well’s community garden. Smith noted that she loves slicing up tomatoes and putting them in sausage gravy.

Herring: best job ever as attorney general By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local What a difference a year makes. When Attorney General Mark Herring visited the Hanover Democratic Committee’s Blue Moon Bash last year, he was in the heat of a tightly contested race, and the election’s outcome was anybody’s guess. Twelve months later, Herring has what he described as the best job he’s ever had, and is part of a Democratic team that now holds all three of the state’s top elected offices. “If memory serves me correctly, the last time I was at a Hanover Democratic Commit-

tee function, I was a candidate for attorney general,” Herring said. “I’m happy to report I’ve been installed as Virginia’s 48th attorney general,” he told more than 100 guests. Herring said he is enjoying his first months on the job, even with the controversial issues his office has faced, including gay rights and immigration. “I love the law and I love public policy, and I love helping people and I get all three of those in my job as attorney general,” Herring said. He emphasized the importance of local politics to the group of Hanover Democrats, citing his four years as a member of the Loudon County
Board of Supervisors. “I can honestly say the four years I served as a county supervisor were some of the most fulfilling because the work you do is right there in the community you live, work and raise your family in,” Herring said. Last year’s election for attorney general was one of the closest in Virginia history, and Herring said there’s an up-side to such a close race. “You get an appreciation for how important it is to make sure that everyone is pulling as hard as they can,” Herring said. He thanked the committee members for their continued work during the period following the election, and asked for
their continued support for incumbent U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner. Herring also expressed his support for Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s efforts to expand Medicare coverage in Virginia. “I’m still hopeful and optimistic and I think the governor is doing a great job,” Herring said. The attorney general has assumed some controversial stands in his first months on the job, and he makes no apologies for those actions. “I can’t tell you how great it is to be in a job where I get to fight for the rights of all Virginians,” Herring said. “They’ve tried to

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
It’s once again time for the cap and gown On Saturday, June 14, seniors from Hanover County Public Schools will be accepting their diplomas during commencement ceremonies at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. It’s a joyous and sad occasion rolled into one exciting day. There’s a deep sense of satisfaction at completing the public education phase of one’s life, which is mixed with the emotions associated with leaving behind the familiar. This writer is preparing for a 40-year class reunion, which has sparked many recent trips down memory lane. We have a closed Facebook page dedicated to the 1974 Class of Logan (West Virginia) High School. Photos of “the good ol’ days” have been shared (some that could have stayed buried) and friendships have been renewed. I think about what lies ahead for our county’s graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their young lives. Our school district is a shining example of giving our future leaders the best education possible. I’ve met many people who relocated to Hanover County to provide their children with the curriculum to advance them in their academic endeavors. Then my mind wanders back to May 1974 when the week of graduation took some unexpected twists. My maternal grandfather passed away. He had toiled in the coal mines for many years and, even though he received the certification as a mine boss, the labor had taken its toll on his body. We also were besieged with torrential rains that led to flooding — and the postponement of our graduation. Yes, we did officially receive our diplomas the next day. So, I look forward to reuniting with classmates, some of whom I haven’t seen in years. The high school years should be among a teen’s best. Last week we launched our annual series spotlighting the honor graduates in Hanover County Public Schools. Their successes speak volumes for what our educators deliver in the classroom. So, I salute members of the 2014 class and wish you all the best. Melody Kinser

Never take a hug for granted By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Never take a hug for granted — for, one day, it could be gone. That’s just one of the many things I’ve learned from my son Jack. Uncertain futures are, well, just that, and living life counting on guarantees that often don’t happen can be frustrating. Ever since Jack was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy four years ago, we decided to forego our questions regarding what will happen and switch to the immediate concerns for what is happening. For a community of parents with
children with DMD, we measure our victories in small doses. Another year of mobility or another period where the fight with a dreaded disease ends in a draw equate to small miracles in our minds. Lately, the community got the news it so dearly wanted when the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) yielded and agreed to fast-track the study of a drug that holds promise for some Duchenne patients. But it wasn’t a miracle that produced these unique results. It was the persistent effort of a determined group of parents who are not willing to surrender to a disease that unfortunately
boasts an unblemished record when it comes to lives taken. Sarepta Therapeutics recently announced that discussions with the FDA have resulted in a quicker test schedule for the drug eteplirsen. The FDA allowed Sarepta to submit a new drug application that could result in the drug being approved outright, denied approval or could receive accelerated approval, meaning it would be available almost immediately. This not only means hope for Duchenne patients, it also means an abbreviated path forward for other drugs that may offer some relief to see HUG, pg. 19

Friends of Hanover Schools endorses reappointment Friends of Hanover Schools was organized more than a year ago by parents, teachers and community members. Since then, we have had a presence at almost every Hanover County School Board meeting and have been able to bear witness to the work that is being done by Glenn Millican. While we are impressed with the caliber of the other nominees who were placed into nomination at the Hanover County Board of Supervisors public hearing on May 14, we are proud to endorse Glen Millican for reappointment to the Mechanicsville District seat of the Hanover County School Board. We have been impressed by Mr. Millican’s thoughtful questions when faced with difficult budget and policy decisions. It is clear that he is focused on the core tenets of school leadership: teaching and learning. Mr. Millican provides valuable insight into the issues affecting our school division. In 2012, he rightly called for the hiring of additional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teachers, responding to the pleas of more than 250 citizens and their concerns about budget cuts. He has supported a plan to have retiring teachers work part-time, which would allow them to be more effective with a lightened workload. This plan also would save taxpayers money and keep experience in the classroom at a
time when experienced teachers are more likely to leave. We have respect for Mr. Millican’s commitment to the education of our youngest citizens and for the institutional knowledge that has been gleaned from 24 years of service on the School Board. When ROTC was on the chopping block in 2010, Mr. Millican was able to help keep it alive by suggesting that Hanover County Public Schools work with the Armed Forces to recruit students to the program. This common sense approach did not cost Hanover citizens anything while saving a program that helps students prepare for their futures. Additionally, Mr. Millican has always been accessible to parents and school system faculty and staff, and it is clear see LETTERS, pg. 8

Technology upgrades set for schools over summer Actions speak louder than words and director of technology services Terri Hechler delivered some good news for Hanover County educators at the May 13 meeting of the Hanover County School Board. After additional funding was provided in recent budgets for technology upgrades, Hechler said those improvements are ongoing, with the bulk of them slated for the summer. “This summer will be the end of XP at Hanover County schools,” Hechler said, referring to outdated computer programs currently in use. She outlined a list of upgrades scheduled for 2015 that will form the foundation of technology program. Those initiatives include: Upgrading more than 3,200 computers with additional storage and new Windows 7. Replacing more than
TERRI HECHLER Hanover County director of technology services
2,400 obsolete desktops with new Windows 7 laptops. Replacing 767 obsolete XP laptops with new Windows 7 laptops. Providing one additional mobile lab cart to each school. Replacing 12 file servers. Migrating to new releases of various instructional software systems and new releases of Microsoft Office. Plans also include enhancing connection capabilities so
future expandability on current modules will be possible. Upgrades also are planned for the county’s Power Teacher program that will improve the grade book portion of the program, installed last year to streamline teacher record-keeping. “We’re also going to upgrade some core land links,” Hechler said. “That puts in a position where when we need to add additional band width, our infrastructure will already be in place.” “We’ll start the upgrades the week after school lets out,” she said. “We anticipate that the bulk of the machine updates will be done by fall.” Mechanicsville representative Glenn Millican expressed his concern at the lack of charging stations at Lee-Davis High School. He said upgrading the core network systems also should include additional spaces to charge personal devices. see UPGRADES, pg. 17

Alleged meeting becomes issue Did I hear correctly that Eric Cantor was just in Amelia Island (Florida) meeting with a George Soros-funded group, Main Street Advocacy? I find it hard to believe that Republicans think it is intelligent to take advice from an organization funded by a man whose sole objective is to defeat Republicans. George Soros has been a large donor to organizations that are dedicated to ceding American sovereignty to international bodies, silencing conservative media, and promoting a cap and trade system that will further cripple the economy. Do you think that this same man’s values align with conservative principles? We need a congressman man that is dedicated to free and fair markets, American sovereignty and electing conservative Republicans. It is time to take a stand against Eric Cantor by voting for Dave Brat in the June 10 primary. Wilma Royer Mechanicsville

Resident wants slower growth If gradual and thoughtful growth planning is an alternative to seeing how many houses, stores and offices can be crammed into an acre of land, put me down for that! Most of the civic leaders who scoff at the notion of trying to keep a rural area Mayberry RFD-like, are “come heres” who seem convinced that where they came from was a much better run place. To those who would like to fashion slow-paced counties after big, urban cities, I would like to ask just what it was that attracted them to the place they’d like to change? There’s an old instructional adage about a closing door that seems appropriate for them. Thank you, David Snipes, for informing of the newly proposed development, Garrison Manor on Studley Road near Shady Grove Road. There is a disturbing trend in Hanover County that says it is okay to strip the natural beauty of forests, fields and meadows only to have them developed into high density housing, incongruent with existing land use. As Mr. Snipes informs and arithmetic suggests, a current proposal has 58 acres to be known as Garrison Manor up for grabs with 132 houses being squeezed into lots between 1/8 and 1/4 acres. By the time roads and rightsof-way are established, personal acreage will necessarily shrink from there. My family has lived in Hanover for 30 years and we would very much like to see the Hanover County Board of Supervisors carry on the tradition of slower growth. Short Pump, Midlothian and Chesterfield are but a few examples of expanding populations that have gone unchecked. The rate at which these locali-
ties have grown has made them lose their distinction from Richmond, Virginia. Civic leaders have justified all of this residential and business growth by pointing to the need for expanding the tax base (code for enlarging local government) and, in turn, help hold down tax rates. Where does the money really go? Chesterfield taxes seem to go up faster than their subdivisions and shopping malls. What we have in Hanover is special and most of us want to protect it from going the way of rapid growth entities and falling victim to urban sprawl. Do we really need to jam a new 132-house subdivision into 58 acres of land or would the county be willing to consider half as many houses in deference to the existing character of the area? I know that more houses mean more revenue for the county. I also know that in the possible event this area is set aside for providing low cost housing, then it would probably be useless to attend the community meetings and public hearings. Nonetheless, I hope other like-minded citizens do show up and voice their opposition. A call to the county planning department (804-3656171) should provide info as to upcoming dates of interest. As of May 17, 2014, nothing has been scheduled. Mel Rice Mechanicsville

years. For example, he loves to say that he is very busy creating jobs. The government has never created any jobs except a government job. He continues to say that he is doing everything he can possibly do to eliminate the disastrous ObamaCare law from our lives, yet he continues to vote to fully fund it every time the opportunity to vote to defund it presents itself. He constantly states that he is doing everything he can to decrease the nation’s $18 trillion debt, yet in his 14 years as a career politician he is, at least in part, responsible for $14 trillion of the debt. He touts his efforts to cut
government spending, yet he has voted 10 times to raise the debt ceiling which allows for more spending, not less. Does this sound like a man of his word? Chairman extends thanks Sometimes we write thank you notes as a necessary evil, but, as I write this one, it brings me a special joy as I remember how much fun I had Saturday night (May 17).
From the opening chords of the Soul Food Combo to the final note of Sweet Virginia Breeze, the entertainment was fabulous. Part of the joy I feel was inspired by seeing all the attendees smiling and clapping and dancing and just having a blast. Many of you have sent in photos and even one video of Steve Bassett “delivering” The Letter. Robbin Thompson and Steve Bassett have been delivering for some time now in Central Virginia, the East Coast, all over the United States and Europe and they finally made it to the actual Center of the Universe. Yes, we know they have visited Ashland many times, but they were at the exact spot on this Saturday. We need to especially thank our neighborhood businesses
who let us take over their space for 48 hours of prep and takedown. Come walk around the Plaza and look at all that pitch in with their space. We respectfully ask you to visit our website, www.ashlandstreetparties.com, and view all of our financial sponsors who keep us operating as we continue to bring music to Ashland. Additionally, their support allows us to support such local nonprofits as Strawberry Faire and Hanover Mental Health Association. The Ashland Kiwanis Club members are on-site workers. Many other nonprofits benefit through the donations from the people who work at EVB Bank and First Capital Bank and give their “pay” to various local groups.
Visit us at our Facebook page and share and look at all the pictures we have from our events and please add yours. We will see all of you plus your friends in August and September as more of the best entertainment in the Universe visits: King Edward and the B.D’s on Aug. 16 and summer is not over until Ron Moody and the Centaurs entertain us on Sept. 20. Senator reacts to Fowler letter Earlier this month, a number of Hanover County seniors received a misleading letter from Del. Hyland F. “Buddy”
Fowler Jr., R-55. As senator for the 9th District, I represent many of the same constituents as Del. Fowler — and I feel compelled to dispel the deceptive claims he is using in an effort to frighten voters. Contrary to Del. Fowler’s assertion that Virginia’s budget is “being held hostage,” the reality is that the Senate has approved a bipartisan budget. That budget is before the House of Delegates, and they could pass it tomorrow if they chose. As Del. Fowler should know perfectly well, the Senate budget does not expand Medicaid. Instead, we support a plan see LETTERS, pg. 17

Ashland kicks off Street Parties Favorites Steve Bassett and Robbin Thompson headline opening concert By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local Yes, indeed, the people of Ashland know how to party, and they proved it again on May 17 when their Summer Street Party series kicked off with one of the area’s favorite duo of musicians, Steve Bassett and Robbin Thompson. We’re building that baseline where we will have a consistent platform, consistent software applications across the board. I think that’s going to put us in a better position,” she said. “We’ve got the ability to
deliver the information now,” Lowry said. “We’re in the process of building our delivery system.” In other news, Jamelle Wilson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, delivered on her promise to present preliminary plans for a committee that will study facilities, boundaries and instructional
programs. Wilson presented a working timetable for the formation of the panel that will consist of School Board members, teachers, local business representatives, higher education representatives and parents. A more detailed account of the exact selection process will be forthcoming, but the board is seeking applications from the
public and those interested in serving. Cold Harbor representative Norman Sulser pushed for the formation of the committee, citing inadequacies at capacities in Hanover schools that result in inefficiencies and under-utilization of system resources. Sulser said he’s pleased with the superintendent’s plan and timetable.

Moreover, closing the coverage gap costs us less than doing nothing. A non-partisan study has shown that Marketplace Virginia will save our state more than $500 million by 2022. The plan will not affect Medicare, either. Medicare is a federal program, and those funding deci-
sions are made in Washington — not Richmond. For as long as Marketplace Virginia lasts, the federal government will always cover at least 90 percent of the cost. If they pay even one cent less, the marketplace will close automatically. Virginia taxpayers will not get stuck with the tab. Good people can disagree about the merits of any given proposal — but we need to make our decisions based on facts, not fear. I hope you will contact Del. Fowler and urge him to sup-
port Marketplace Virginia so that poor working families can have access to health care at little to no taxpayer cost — and so that our Commonwealth can save hundreds of millions
of dollars. Del. Fowler can be reached at 804-305-8867 or DelBFowler@ house.virginia.gov. If voters who received Del. Fowler’s letter have further
questions or concerns, I invite them to contact my office at 804-698-7509 or district09@ senate.virginia.gov. Sen. Donald McEachin 9th Senate District

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Leo, 343512, is a 1-year-old male hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Leo is a very playful dog. He loves nothing better than to run around the play with his chew toys. He loves the attention of other dogs and socializes well with them. Leo might do best with a large yard to play in. Duncan, 360727, is a 3-yearold neutered male domestic short-haired cat. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Duncan is such a handsome cat. He has beautiful coloring. His personality is on par as well. Duncan really likes to be petted and scratched on the head and neck. He would make a great house cat. He is litter box trained. current voting location in Farrington is situated in a bad spot on a busy highway, and recommended advertising the proposed move back to the old firehouse. “Farrington, if nothing else, is dangerous,” Hazzard said. “I recommend that it go back to its original location, which should make it easy for people to understand.” He did not endorse precinct moves in Rockville and Elmont, and they will not be advertised. In the Chickahominy District, a move from Washington Henry Elementary School to Northside Baptist Church gained supervisor Angela Kelly Wiecek’s approval and will be advertised. “I have worked the Shady Grove/Clay precinct for a number of years and there are a number of issues,” she said about the polling place in her district. Kelly-Wiecek indicated that previous moves have created problems at the precinct, but recommended advertising the move after speaking with constituents and poll workers. “We created a little bit of our own confusion in moving the precinct from its original location. If we move again, I want to make sure we are doing it thoughtfully and making sure that everything moves as smoothly as possible going forward,” she added.
Smithson had recommended the creation of new precinct at Atlee, but Kelly-Wiecek said adding another voting machine at the current location could provide solutions to long lines. Smithson cited parking, access and other issues in proposing the moves, and said current voting levels at the identified precincts are increasing and nearing legal limits. County attorney Sterling Rives clarified that issue for supervisors at their recent work session to study the proposed moves earlier this month. “Once a precinct reaches 4,000 actual voters in a presidential election, then the registrar is required to report that to the board and the board has six months to either split the precinct or move the precinct boundaries,” Rives said. Smithson said there are more than 4,000 registered at the Atlee precinct, one of the county’s busiest. “From his perspective (Rives’), it sounds like 4,000 people have to turn up and actually vote,” Smithson said. “That’s not my perspective. That’s what the statute says,” Rives responded, noting that precincts can be adjusted when the number of registered voters reaches 5,000. Kelly-Wiecek recommended the county not advertise a new precinct, and said the current see POLL, pg. 26

Police investigating threat at King William High School said King William County schools Superintendent Mark Jones. Officials said they are taking the message seriously and will be adding security at county schools today and next week. The message, written in a boy’s bathroom at the school, says, “I will kill everyone.” Written below the threatening words is Monday’s
date. Beside the message is a crudely drawn symbol that authorities said they do not recognize. King William sheriff’s Lt. Tim Hixenbaugh said he has sent a picture of the symbol to law enforcement officials nationwide to see if anyone recognizes it. Authorities on Thursday were

and I’ve never seen voters having a problem getting in or out to vote,” Via said. “I believe voting precincts should be on public property. I do not wish to move this precinct,” he added. Elton Wade said his Cold Harbor/Black Creek constituents want to return to their old voting precinct at the fire station that is now being used as a church, and recommended advertising that move. Wade did not endorse a proposed move from Cold Harbor School to Fairmount Christian Church and it will not be advertised. “I’d like to keep Cold Harbor School just like it is,” Wade said. Mechanicsville supervisor Canova Peterson also said he couldn’t justify moving the precinct from its current location at Mechanicsville Elementary School. He pointed out that Mechanicsville was the least affected district during redistricting four years ago, and said a move to the Church of Christ is not necessary at this time.
“Whenever we have a presidential election, it doesn’t matter where we have it, there are going to be some problems,” Peterson said. Chairman Sean Davis, who represents the Henry District, also did not recommend advertising a move in his precinct “My recommendation is to keep Totopotomoy where it is at its current location at the Fire Station #3,” Davis said. Smithson said there’s also confusion regarding the names of some of the county’s precincts, and suggested going by numbers instead of names. Davis said he was not comfortable with coming up with new names on demand and suggested advertising the proposed changes with their current names and corresponding numbers. Kelly-Wiecek was scheduled to hold a community meeting Tuesday, May 27, to discuss the proposed Shady Grove precinct move. The board will schedule a public hearing to consider the four recommended moves on Wednesday, June 11.

He also has backed new Chesapeake Bay regulations that require counties to take extensive measures to reduce pollution runoff. Some interests have challenged the regulations, but Herring stands by his decision to defend the new guidelines. “We’ve come together with a promising plan to clean up the Chesapeake Bay,” Herring said.

Hawks advance past C-feds in boys’ lacrosse By Josiah Turner For The Mechanicsville Local Both Lee-Davis and Hanover’s boys’ lacrosse teams faced one another in the final game of the regular season, then turned around to play each other in the Richmond Group quarterfinals Thursday night. It was the first home playoff game in Hanover lacrosse history, and the Hawks were determined to come out victorious. Their offense got off to a quick start and set the pace as they defeated the Confederates 19-5 to advance to the Richmond Group semifinals on Monday. “I was really happy with our energy level coming out in the first quarter,” said Hanover head coach Ryan Rohde. “I’m really proud of our guys coming out from the opening whistle and really taking it to them.” The Confederates were the first to strike with the first goal of the game, but the Hawks – led by Colin Di Sesa and Trevor Cook – responded by scoring 10 consecutive points of their own. Hanover went into the half with a comfortable 12-2
lead. “[Di Sesa and Cook] took advantage of what Lee-Davis was giving us,” said Rhode. “Both of them had really good games. I’m really proud of them for our first playoff game. they really came out and played well.” Di Sesa scored five goals and assisted on two others, while Cook scored four goals and had two assists of his own. Alex Fisher also scored four goals for Hanover. Lee-Davis, who has the youngest lacrosse program of any of the Hanover county high schools, finished the season 59 – five of those losses at the hands of cross-county rivals Atlee and Hanover. “Competing against those teams that are good, it only makes you better,” said Lee-Davis head coach Jarrett Patteson. “It only gets your kids to see what they can be if they work hard at it both in-season and offseason and keep moving in the right direction.” Patteson is aware that his Dave Lawrence/The Local see HAWKS, pg. 36

While it could have been a major setback, Cannon was proactive to make sure it wasn’t. “I pretty much lived in the weight room during the indoor season,” he said. “Not losing what I had before my injury was the main goal.” Conference 16 Patrick Henry’s girls handily won the girls’ title and the boys’ finished a close second in the Conference 16 track and field championships at Albemarle High School on Saturday, May 17.

Lee-Davis falls to Atlee lacrosse Back in January, some of the girls joining the Lee-Davis High School girls’ lacrosse team had never played the sport before. Now they can say they have been in a playoff. Unfortunately for the Confederates, however, their first postseason appearance was against the very experienced Atlee Raiders, who put a quick end to the Lee-Davis run in the Virginia High School League Richmond Group tournament with a 19-1 victory. Despite their quick exit from the playoffs, Lee-Davis head coach Pam Hill was pleased with her team’s progress this year. “We’re a very new team,” Hill said. “We’re working on
our skills and progressively getting that much better passing the ball and being aggressive [defensively].” Atlee head coach Tommy Mackay said the Confederates came out strong, but that his Raiders quickly adjusted. “I think the players got more focused and were able to get to some of those balls on the ground and they were able to control it,” Mackay said. “Ball control is everything in this game. If you have the ball, you can score. If you don’t have the ball, you can’t score. Sarah Colombo, with three goals, and Hayley Anna, with two goals and an assist, provided much of the Raiders’ offense. Sara Hatch scored two goals and an assist for the Raiders. Jordan Foxwell scored the lone goal for the Confederates.

R-MC found spring a season full of successes By David Halstead For The Mechanicsville Local School may be out for summer for Randolph-Macon students, but the Yellow Jackets’ spring sports teams left a strong legacy to build on for next year, with several deep postseason runs in Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournaments, including a repeat performance as ODAC women’s golf champions. Baseball The Randolph-Macon baseball team finished their 2014 campaign 24-15 overall and 146 in the ODAC – ending its season with its ninth consecutive ODAC tournament appearance since 2006. The Yellow Jackets made it to the semifinals of the ODAC tournament before falling to eventual tournament champion Bridgewater 7-5. “I thought it was a great year. We met two of the three goals that set out to achieve at the beginning of the season. We wanted to be a top two team in our league. We wanted to be ranked in the top six in the region. We achieved both of those two goals,” said head baseball coach Ray Hedrick said. “Our third goal was to get to a regional and compete for a regional championship and win a regional game, which we have not been able to do in six attempts.” The regular season saw four All-ODAC selections in Nicholas Maiolo (Powhatan), Glenn McLaughlin (Douglas Freeman), Jamie Hendrick (J.R. Tucker), and Jake Bram. Maiolo also took home the ODAC’s Rookie-of-the-Year honor. Hawks avenge regional loss to Douglas Freeman By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch The last time the Hanover and Douglas Freeman baseball teams met, the game ended with the Freeman Rebels dogpiling in the infield. It was 2013, and Freeman had just won the Central Region championship. On Wednesday night, the Hawks got their chance for revenge. Derek Casey pitched six innings and struck out 12, Troy Szalay hit a two-run homer, and No. 3 Hanover upended top-ranked Douglas Freeman 6-3. “The kids were excited to get the opportunity to avenge
the loss in the region championship,” Hawks head coach Charlie Dragum said. Freeman (18-1) began the night undefeated. So even though Hanover went on to win the state championship last year, the Hawks (14-2) acknowledged they weren’t the favorites this time. “We came in here as the underdog,” Casey said. “We definitely had the chip on our shoulder.” Casey lit up the radar guns, firing his fastball in the low 90s. Freeman managed only two hits against him. One of the two, however, was J.T. Bellotti’s solo home run to left field. Of the
three runs Casey gave up, two were earned. “I don’t think he had his A-game, but at times he was exceptional,” Dragum said. Casey’s pitch count climbed to 109, forcing Dragum to pull him after six innings. Sophomore Hayden Moore pitched a perfect seventh inning and picked up the save. The pitching matchup featured two hurlers committed to the University of Virginia, Casey and Freeman junior Daniel Lynch. But Casey was the better pitcher Wednesday night. Lynch, who allowed five runs on seven hits, labored

Hanover’s Troy Szalay (22) is greeted by his teamates after a hitting a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 5-1 lead in their 5-3 victory over host Douglas Freeman Wednesday.
“We all worked counts,” designated hitter Troy Szalay said. “We all made him pitch. There was never an easy out.” In the fourth inning, Szalay lofted a 2-2 curve into the driveway beyond left field. That put Hanover up 5-1. A rarely used catcher last year, Szalay is now the Hawks’ third hitter in the lineup. Usually we are stronger, but we had one guy tear his ACL in February playing intramural basketball,” Turnage said. “That happened in February and he was my No. 2 golfer and that finished him for 8 months. “It was a battle every inning. It was tough,” Pride said. “I was able to get out of it, but it was a lot of fatigue. … I threw a lot of pitches, that was the thing, and eventually they had to take me out.” But Atlee had something to do with it, too. “Atlee was much improved and played a much better game than what we saw at their,” Lee-Davis head coach Kenny Lewis said, referring to the Confederates’ 12-0 victory at Atlee earlier this month. Junior Betsy Hebert and sophomore Jenelle Whitman were named to the ODAC AllTournament Team for women’s lacrosse following the championship game. Whitman was voted to the Chesapeake All-Region Second Team by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Yellow Jackets, under first-year head coach M.K. Geratowski, posted an overall record of 10-8 and went 6-4 in the ODAC. “Janelle for us really does it all. She takes the majority of our draws and has already broken a lot of our records with still two years to go,” Geratowski said. “I think her speed in the mid-field is huge for us. She is just an allaround fantastic player. From the beginning of the season to the end, she made huge strides to improve. By the end of the
season, we could give her the ball and know that she would go in and get a goal for us.” Randolph-Macon has a lot to look forward to next year with a young team and a lot of heart in the program. “I think the biggest positive for us going forward is that we are only losing one senior,” Geratowski said. “Having a young team hurt us a lot this year in close games, but we have a lot to look forward to in the future.” Men’s Tennis Randolph-Macon senior Michael Baxter (Mills Godwin) lost a third-set tie-breaker to Trevor Cox of Guilford as the sixth-seeded Quakers edged the third-seeded Yellow Jackets 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Men’s Tennis Championship at Randolph-Macon’s Banks Tennis Center.
