There’s plenty to do on a beautiful Memorial Day, with pools opening for the season, the backyard grill beckoning, and holiday sales at the local malls calling. But more than 400 Hanover County citizens took special note of just what the holiday means at a somber ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Hanover Wayside Park on U.S. 301 last week. The message of the day at the annual event was a remembrance of the fallen, those who served and died in service of their country. A blended crowd of veterans, families and officials sat in silence as this year’s event featured salutes by Mechanicville Post VFW 9808 and the traditional laying of the wreath by members of Post 175. Never underestimate untold sacrifices
From the editor
Thank a teacher — it’s the least we can do If you can read this, thank a teacher. We’ve all seen the bumper sticker with that statement. But how many of us really take the time to thank a teacher who made a difference in our lives? It took more than 20 years to do so, but yours truly had the opportunity and took advantage of the moment. And, even though her influence had no impact on my career, her guidance and unwavering support of her students remains a treasured compass along life’s path. Renata Comoretto taught Spanish at Logan (West Virginia) High School. As a sophomore, the choice of a foreign language to study was among the decisions facing a student in the college preparatory curriculum. French and Latin were readily dismissed and German had been dropped from the course list. So, Spanish was the language for me. Two years were mandatory toward graduation credits. Miss Comoretto’s class was so engaging that I included her third year elective course in my schedule. She was the epitome of a dedicated teacher. She was devoted to providing whatever direction she could to the students and their futures. So, it was a chance encounter at my hometown post office in the early 2000s that I was able to say thank you. She had retired by that time, but was genuinely humbled by my praise of the role she had played in the professional adult I had become. (And in high school, even I would have questioned the outcome.) As Hanover County Public Schools students and those graduating from private schools or home schools, if there is a teacher who has been a guiding force in your educational journey, take the time to tell them, and, most of all, say thank you. Because of them, you can read this.

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Vietnam seemed like a location on another planet to an immature high school junior in 1967, and death and disaster on a battlefield were foreign images to most of us. All of us, except, the unlucky ones who were actually fighting the war in Southeast Asia. It was a time of uncertainty for many draft-aged youth, but one thing was abundantly clear: If you messed up in school and left, you were headed for Vietnam. We had classmates who, for various reasons, were now serving. Some of them were the wild bunch that quit school early and found themselves at
Fort Campbell faster than you can say, “You’re drafted.” Others forbad the inevitable and joined on their own, some in the U.S. Marines, others in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. Even with some of our classmates serving, the idea of war had not sunk into many of our minds. This was our first life experience with real death and destruction on battlefields and jungles in Southeast Asia. News passed around campus quickly when one of our own died in battle in Vietnam. He returned home quickly and his funeral was packed with friends, family and fellow students. As I passed by his open coffin,
Vietnam became real for me, and I was rudely awakened to the sacrifices required to maintain a democracy. So, I think of that classmate who willingly went when called, served with honor and dignity, and paid the ultimate price on the battlefield with the recent observance of Memorial Day 2014. No doubt, countless other Americans have made equal or more gallant gestures of heroism and patriotism without uniforms. But, around Memorial Day, and it is a special time reserved for the men and women in uniform who served, and those who still serve today. see SACRIFICES, pg. 8

Voter asks Cantor about tax cut for small business Well, well, here we go again. Seems like yesterday that Eric Cantor promised a 30 percent tax cut for small business in trade for their vote. Sure fooled me. After all, I saw local business owners on TV vouching for the guy. I thought they knew something. Maybe those few business owners got some return for their vote, but I, for one, got zip. Eric, how much nerve does it take to come back and offer the same thing you failed to make good on last time? One thing for sure, after I leave the booth on election day, you will be 1 down. Ted Mentz Old Church
Studley resident turns to county for help with better Internet I have been a resident of Hanover County for the past 20-plus years and recently moved within the last two years to the Studley and Spring Run Road area. Since moving to this lovely side of the county, the high speed Internet from both Verizon and Comcast do not come down Spring Run Road. Verizon DSL comes down our road and we are lucky if it works at best. It seems like Comcast nor Verizon do not
want the business to expand it here but they will expand it to Parson’s Cause Subdivision on Hanovertown. The Comcast lines stop short of our house literally .78 of a mile in all three directions. I have tried calling into Comcast but I get some person in Philadelphia who has no clue about our area and has no idea how to connect us to our local Comcast office. I am looking for our Hanover County Board of Supervisors to step up and do something about this. I work from home and really could use the high speed Internet for work without having to rely on Verizon DSL, which doesn’t work half the time. Looking for help in Studley! often maligned these days, and, misguided views come must be corrected. Christians love the Word of God — all of it. Jesus and the apostles loved the Word of God. They quoted scripture in heated arguments to quiet the mouths of adversaries. Christians go to the Bible for truth. We do not gloss over or change the parts that condemn certain behaviors as sin. Kelley rightly points out Romans 3:23, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. The answer to that problem is repentance, and faith in Jesus Christ. You cannot be a Christian without repentance I feel that I must respond from sin. Their personal sacrifices should never be underestimated or taken for granted, as they silently serve with honor, dedication and pride. Thousands of American soldiers died before my classmate met his untimely death in the jungle, and many more followed him home in flag-draped coffins. I looked at all of them in a different light after his death, and I never again assumed that freedom came without a cost. As I’ve covered numerous
veterans’ events, I note the looks on the faces who seem to show up at each and every one of these venues. They are solemn, committed and still loyal to a cause that required everything they had, and more in some cases. Their loyalty is unwavering. So, let us recommit to taking care of our returning veterans, making sure they receive the best care this country has to offer. It’s small repayment for the sacrifice they — and their families — have made to ensure the safety and security of our great

Thanks to a donation from Martin Marietta, the North Anna Battlefield Park is almost doubled in size and now features expanded walking trails and interpretive signage. Almost 150 years to the day, more than 200 Hanover citizens turned out to celebrate the sesquicentennial and open the new portion of the park. Noted Civil War historian Gordon Rhea provided the keynote address about the Overland Campaign and how

The Blue and Gray Education Society donated more than $50,000 to the park. Dominion built the observation decks and numerous volunteers provided the sweat equity. Sager said the county Sesquicentennial Committee also played a vital role in the dedication. “They’ve given us the historical expertise that really helped us develop this park. It’s been a team effort,” Sager said. Deal was equally pleased and gracious. “It’s been a great turnout for this year’s event. Everyone here paid such great homage to the men who fought,” he said. “I’d like to thank all of the companies who donated land and supplies, and the numerous volunteers.” Re-enactors from several regiments provided an authentic feel to the event, and the cannon fire was more than real enough for some observers. Union colors were presented by the 28th Massachusetts and Confederate Second Corps raised the Stars and Bars. The 47th Virginia Infantry provided the Honor Guard. Rhea provided a comprehensive background of how the two massive armies wound up facing each other on the banks of the North Anna River 150 years ago. “In the spring of 1864, this war had been raging for three years, the casualties had been

fights against it every day, and calls upon God to help him in that fight. The Bible says that homosexuality is sin, repeatedly. It also says that all of my faults and errors are sin. But I’m not asking anyone to condone them. There is the rub. Any cursory reading of Paul’s letters to the churches will show a wealth of instruction for followers of Christ to walk in a way worthy of our calling. We fall short, but we do not give up or try to justify our shortcomings. Some professing Christians are throwing the Bible under the bus along with those who love it, read it, and live by it. God authored it and gave it to His church. It is the ultimate authority for every believer, something Kelley should know. There is instruction on how to properly judge right and wrong, and how to do so with a loving motive. A believer should never condemn another person for their sin. We’re too aware of our own sin to do that. But we do say turn to the Savior, and you can be forgiven as we have. Repentance and faith produce a “new creature” in Christ. That is a world away from “leave me as I am Christianity.” I would suggest that Kelley read the book of James. Bill Elrod Mechanicsville
their FiOS high speed Internet/ cable coverage throughout the county, and what, if anything, is being done to rectify this situation. I reached out to a couple members from the Board of Supervisors, but have yet to hear back from them. I figured The Local would be the next logical forum to ask for some answers. A handful of years ago, Verizon FiOS became available to the Metro Richmond area, except Hanover County. I was told the reason for that is because Verizon would not agree to lay their fiber optic cables throughout the entire county. Verizon did not want to invest in the more rural parts of Hanover! , so county officials would not agree to let them in, so to speak. I find this disconcerting as Comcast has a virtual monopoly on high speed internet in Hanover. I recently read that Comcast is seeking to cap data usage through high speed internet, so now this monopoly has an even stronger grip on its customers in Hanover County. I find it very disconcerting that Comcast is given a pass by our county officials while Verizon Fios is kept out. I really look forward to hearing the ‘official’ reason from the county officials who have been keeping Verizon Fios out for the past 5 years or so. Your actions are preventing me from making choices as a consumer. Phillip Adams Mechanicsville
However, as we look to trade agreements and opportunities abroad, I am glad to see U.S. Sen. Mark Warner’s commitment to keeping jobs here domestically. Along with Virginia Republican Frank Wolf, Sen. Warner introduced legislation to bring back manufacturing jobs to rural regions in the United States. The America Recruits Act shows Sen. Warner’s dedication to strengthening America’s manufacturing field and his commitment to bringing economic progress to distressed regions of our state and country. Because he is a businessman, Sen. Warner understands that to keep jobs in Virginia, we must create incentives for

Every dime spent on every “Fast and Furious” gun that “walked” into Mexico was approved by Cantor. Every dime the NSA Spends to spy on innocent Americans was approved by Cantor. Not a dime is spent that was not appropriated by the U.S. House of Representatives and Eric Cantor. When Cantor took over, along with John Boehner, for Nancy Pelosi, they promised the out of control spending would stop. It has not stopped. It has accelerated. And the last installment in the out of control spending was actually a blank check. The U.S. debt is up 25 percent since Cantor took over as majority leader. But if we speak out against the excessive spending, it is OK to blame Obama, but don’t you dare try to hold Eric Cantor accountable. But Cantor signed the checks. It’s way past time to term limit this 14-year career politician on June 10. Bob Walden Mechanicsville
Who is the conservative? It is campaign season again. June 10 is the Republican Primary, a race between Eric Cantor and Dave Brat. It is the time when politicians tell us they are doing what we want them to do. Eric Cantor is telling us that he is a conservative who will cut spending, repeal ObamaCare, and fight against amnesty. These are his claims. Are they true? No. Eric Cantor voted along with 28 other Republicans and all the Democrats to fully fund ObamaCare (H.R. 2775). He has voted to raise the debt ceiling 10 times and voted
for the Ryan-Murray budget, which eliminated spending caps from the sequester. He increased spending when he voted for Medicare Part D, No Child Left Behind and the Farm Bill. We can’t even trust him on amnesty. Eric Cantor was a leader in the formation of the “Kids Act,” which provides amnesty to all illegal immigrants under the age of 30. Even his integrity is suspect. Eric Cantor added an amendment to the bipartisan Stock Act that allows family members of Congressmen to get rich from insider trading. And he voted to bail out the big Wall Street banks in 2008, some of whom are Cantor’s largest donors. I used to support Cantor because I thought he was a conservative who fought for the people of the 7th District. But his voting record proves otherwise. Maybe he was a conservative when he was first elected 14 years ago, but he has been in Washington, D.C., for too long. On June 10, I’m voting for the real conservative in this race, Dave Brat. Ann Trayhan Mechanicsville
Cantor asked to be fair, honest U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor has become one of the most powerful Republicans in the country. For the most part during his political career, he has maintained a high level of discourse. Recently, however, he has begun to engage in a scorched earth, sea of lies style of campaigning. He has saturated mailboxes of his constituents with repeated false attacks and character assassinations against his opponent, Dr. Dave Brat. These despicable attacks are the types of politics as usual that have discouraged the voters and
forced them to tune out their representatives. Campaigns should be about the ideas and qualifications of the candidates, not egregious false attacks designed to smear your opponent’s reputation. I appeal to you, sir, to run a fair and honest campaign that highlights the specifics of your record. The people of your 7th Congressional District deserve better. Your leadership, in my view, is questionable when you resort to these types of tactics against a fellow Republican. Major Mansfield Mechanicsville
severely. Cantor’s main problem is that he is beholden to big business. Big business wants to do “business as usual,” even if that means polluting the air, water and land, accelerating climate change; saddling our college students with ridiculous levels of debt and: further increasing income inequality. We need candidates who value the environment and other human beings, not this false choice between conservative and more conservative. Judy Thomas Mechanicsville

Writer: Cantor’s main problem I read with interest recent letters critical of U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor. I think many of these writers have it wrong: Cantor’s main drawback is not his vote to raise the debt limit. After all, that is simply a poor name for legislation that will pay for the expenditures the country has already made. Not raising the debt limit us like not paying your personal debts: you go into default. This would damage the economy

A fact sheet outlining modifications to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Farm Loan Programs is available. The Farm Bill expands lending opportunities for thousands of farmers and ranchers to begin and continue operations, including greater flexibility in determining eligibility, raising loan limits, and emphasizing beginning and socially disadvantaged producers. Changes that will take effect immediately include: Elimination of loan term limits for guaranteed operating loans. Modification of the
definition of beginning farmer, using the average farm size for the county as a qualifier instead of the median farm size. Modification of the Joint Financing Direct Farm Ownership Interest Rate to 2 percent less than regular Direct Farm Ownership rate, with a floor of 2.5 percent. Previously, the rate was established at 5 percent. Increase of the maximum loan amount for Direct Farm Ownership down payments from $225,000 to $300,000. Elimination of rural residency requirement for Youth Loans, allowing urban youth to benefit.
Debt forgiveness on Youth Loans, which will not prevent borrowers from obtaining additional loans from the federal government. Increase of the guarantee amount on Conservation Loans from 75 to 80 percent and 90 percent for socially disadvantaged borrowers and beginning farmers. Microloans will not count toward loan term limits for veterans and beginning farmers. Additional modifications must be implemented through the rulemaking processes. Visit the FSA Farm Bill website for detailed information and updates to farm loan programs.

“Back to the Farm: Backyard Poultry” will be the topic of a workshop to be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 14, 9 a.m. to noon, sponsored by the Hanover-Caroline Soil & Water Conservation District. Harvey Ussery, author of The Small-Scale Poultry Flock, and Molly Sharp, owner of Hanover County-based Fiddlesticks Farm, will speak on backyard poultry production. They will address startup, choosing breeds, housing, care, feeding and processing, among other aspects. The workshop will begin with Ussery’s presentation at the Montpelier Community Center. Participants will then move to nearby Fiddlesticks Farm for a presentation and tour hosted by Sharp. Cost for the workshop is $10 per person and includes brunch and a complimentary copy of The Small-Scale Poultry Flock. Registration is required and will be capped at 40 participants. Interested persons must register online at http:// fs6.formsite.com/rjone1nm/Backyard-Poultry/ index.html or call the Hanover-Caroline SWCD office at 804-537-5225, ext. 102. Sharp makes her living performing with the Richmond Symphony, teaching viola at Virginia
Commonwealth University and as the violist for the Oberon String Quartet. She has long been interested in gardening, real food and sustainability, and has had chickens since moving to the farm in 1996. Sharp has completed all of the Sustainable Agriculture classes at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College taught by Cindy Conner. At the request of the Center for Rural Culture in Goochland, Sharp taught a class entitled “Chicken Processing for Women.” Ussery and his wife Ellen produce their own eggs and poultry, and most of their fruits and vegetables, on three good acres in northern Virginia. He also breeds his own chickens — a flock of Icelandics, his choice as the most selfsufficient homestead breed — and explores new ways to feed them from home resources, with less reliance on purchased feeds. He has written extensively for Mother Earth News, Backyard Poultry, and Countryside & Small Stock Journal. Ussery’s book, The Small-Scale Poultry Flock (Chelsea Green, 2011), sets a new standard for holistic poultry husbandry. His website is www.themodernhomestead.us. L-D earns another title game upset of Atlee By Brad Bess Richmond Times-Dispatch Lee-Davis High School won the last Capital District title a year ago against Atlee after the Raiders had beaten the Confederates twice during the regular season. The first Conference 11 title game went the same way. Lee-Davis, ranked No. 6 in the last T-D poll, defeated No. 5 Atlee 4-3 in eight innings on Friday at Deep Run for the first Conference 11 softball championship. Atlee came in as the top seed in the conference. LeeDavis was the second seed. “It’s always a tough game,” said Lee-Davis coach Jackie Davis. “I’m just glad to see how hard we fought and how we didn’t give up after they scored the three runs. We were able to fight back.” Atlee freshman Peyton St. George and Lee-Davis sophomore Kylie Stonebraker made it a pitchers’ duel early, holding the opposing batters hitless until the fourth inning. Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Mattie Fitzgerald hit a twoRBI double to score Cameron Hall and Casey Barrett to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Riley Satterwhite ran for Fitzgerald after Fitzgerald advanced to third on a wild pitch. Satterwhite then scored on a Shelby Hill single to give Atlee a 3-0 lead.

Lee-Davis players react after tying the score with Atlee during the Conference 11 softball championship game at Deep Run High School Friday. The Confederates scored its fourth run in the eighth inning and held off the Raiders to win 4-3.
With Atlee an inning away from the title, Lee-Davis came back with a three-run inning of its own. Lauren McIntyre drove in Becca Fields and Elizabeth Hudson with a triple and then crossed the plate herself on an Ella Alvis groundout.
“I was crowding the plate looking for the outside pitch,” McIntyre said. “And as soon as it went by her (the outfielder), I was rounding second and I was like, ‘I’m taking third, I’m taking third, I’m going for it.’ I had to take it because you’ve got to
take risks that late in the game.” After a scoreless bottom seventh, Kylie Stonebraker reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when her sister, Kinsee Stonebraker, hit a sacrifice fly to center for the game-winning RBI.
“Just coming up there, I was like, this is my chance to make something happen,” Kinsee said. “It wasn’t about me at that point, it was about the team. Especially my sister scoring, it
King William High School’s softball team rode a wave of dominating pitching performances by Kayla Huffman and getting a big boost from a fourrun fifth inning to win the first Conference 33 softball title with a 5-0 shutout over host Nandua Friday. The Cavaliers began the Region 2A East tournament at home against Bluestone on Monday. “It was a great game,” King William softball coach Barbara Baker said of the Cavaliers’ championship game performance. Essence Jackson, who went 3 for-3 at the plate, got things going for the Cavaliers in the fifth, opening the inning with her second hit of the game. Erin Anderson sacrificed her to second. By Jordan Bondurant Richmond Times-Dispatch Atlee’s girls and Lee-Davis’ boys made winning the 5A South track and field titles look easy on Saturday at Atlee High School. The Raiders trailed Mills Godwin early but quickly regained the lead as athletes placed in the top eight throughout the day to complete the indoor/outdoor sweep of the 5A South crowns. “Everyone just did what they needed to do,” Atlee junior India Lowe said. “The whole team carried their weight.” Lowe was Atlee’s only individual champion, winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.14 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.73. “I’m a team person, and anything I can do to help the team win, I’m happy,” Lowe said. Manchester finished second in the team standings behind Atlee. The Lancers, who scored 17 points in the Central Region meet in 2013, scored 53 points on Saturday. Elizabeth Hutton, Group 5A indoor champ in the 1,600, captured the 5A South championship Saturday, beating Margot Brown of Deep Run. “I felt really strong,” Hutton said. “It’s amazing to be able to run for such a great program like Manchester and run for such great coaches like (Gene Bowen and Will Byrnes). But I’m really proud of our team.” Atlee’s track has been good to Lee-Davis coach Neal Mathews and his team in the past two weeks. The Confederates squeaked out a win over Highland Springs on May 23 for the Conference 11 title, but they came back on Saturday and ran away from the competition in the region meet. “Everyone came together, and things just went our way,”

Hawks recover from scare to win Conference 20 title By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Glen Allen High School’s softball team ran into a juggernaut when the Jaguars came to Hanover for the Conference 20 championship. The Hawks, led by pitcher Kiandra Mitchum, shut the Jaguar offense down while their own offense, once fired up, seemed almost impossible to stop en route to a 14-0 victory Friday. Kaylyn Shepherd accounted for most of Hanover’s run production, hitting two doubles in three at-bats, driving in two runs and scoring three herself. The Hawks were so prolific
they chased Glen Allen’s pitchers three times. It was quite a turnaround for a Hawks’ team that had to overcome a six-run deficit against Dinwiddie in the semifinals the night before. “I was proud of the girls,” said Hanover head coach Stephanie Acors. “We were down six to nothing and had to fight back to get on top of that. So, coming back from a game like that to something like today is incredible. The girls just played stress-free ball and put the ball in play.” Glen Allen head coach Layne Nuckols said the Jaguars never recovered from the Hawks six-run onslaught in the
first inning. “They came out hitting the ball hard and we made some errors in the field,” Nuckols said. “They picked up momentum and just never lost it.” In their semifinal against Dinwiddie, the Hawks were down 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth before scoring four runs there and two in the sixth to tie the game. They fought through two extra innings before Erin Watkins drove in the winning run in the ninth for a 7-6 victory. Mitchum pitched a complete game, drove in three runs and scored a run herself. base hit to leave runners at first and third, and senior Jessica Webb followed with her first home run of her high school career to make it 5-0. “When that inning was over, it just took all the wind out of Nandua,” Baker said. “We just kind of cruised for the next couple of innings after that.” The Cavaliers advanced to the final with a 10-0 home victory over Windsor the day before. King William got all the runs it needed in the first inning. Leadoff batter Essence Jackson walked, was sacrificed to second by Erin Anderson, and scored on a single by Shannon Holt. The game, which began Wednesday before being interrupted by storms moving into the area, remained something of a pitchers’ duel until the sixth inning. The Cavaliers began the inning with a 3-0

Hawks overcome Trojans for Conference 20 title By Josiah Turner For The Mechanicsville Local The Hanover High School boys’ baseball team faced the Midlothian Trojans Friday night in the first Conference 20 championship. Even though both teams had already qualified for Region 4A South tournament, they both wanted to win the championship for bragging rights – and home-diamond advantage. The Hawks earned both, defeating the Trojans in a close contest, 2-1.
“I think it was important for the kids. They wanted to go out and win it,” said Hawks head coach Charlie Dragum. “We practice every day because we talk about winning big games at the end of the year, and this was a big game.” Since he had pitched the night before, Hanover ace Derek Casey wasn’t eligible to play. Dragum, however, was confident in his bullpen, using four different pitchers against the Trojans. “We’ve got a lot of good pitching,” Dragum said. “We’ve

got a bunch of young kids that really throw the ball well.” With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fourth inning, Hanover’s Jakob Pridemore gave his team the lead for good after he singled home Trevor Denton. Denton, who also pitched in the fifth and sixth inning, made the play of the night in the top of the sixth. The Trojans were rallying, with runners on both first and second, when the Hawks reached into their bag of tricks. Denton was in the midst of playing a game of cat and mouse with Midlothian’s Michael Blackburn, who was on second base threatening to steal to third. Denton eventually faked a throw to second. Hanover’s Cayman Richardson and Josh Sheppard sold it perfectly, acting as if the ball went over their heads into center field. Denton, still holding the ball in his glove, ran over and tagged Blackburn out as he began to steal third. “We really didn’t want to bring it out this early, but we kind of had to,” said Denton. “We had runners on first and second, no outs, and it [ended up] working out.” Hanover has been holding the play in reserve. “We just put that in the other

day in practice. We’ve always had it, [though] we don’t use it some seasons,” said Dragum. “It just happened to be the right time.” That proved the turning point of the game, as it stole Midlothian’s momentum and was the closest the Trojans came to scoring another run. Pitcher Hayden Moore closed for the Hawks in the seventh inning to firm the Hawks’ grip on the 2014 Conference 20 title.
“This has been one of the best teams in the state,” said Midlothian head coach Adam Griffin. “I think it positively affects us. It shows we can play with anyone.” Griffin feels good about how his team will be remembered as well. “We’re the first ever runner-up, so I guess that’s a consolation,” said Griffin. “Played a great game against one of the best teams Conference 20 may ever see.”
Huffman earned yet another complete-game victory, striking out 12 Dukes over the two days. She also went 2 for 4 at the plate. Erin Anderson and Megan Jenkins each had two RBIs for the Cavaliers, and McKayla Sims went 2 for 2 with a RBI.

Patrick Henry douses Comets By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Patrick Henry High School’s softball team won the unofficial Hanover County championship earlier this season by sweeping its rivals at Atlee, Hanover and Lee-Davis. Last Monday, the Patriots added an official championship to its list of 2014 accomplishments. Patrick Henry, led by pitcher Candace Whittemore with nine strikeouts, claimed the first Conference 16 softball championship with a 4-0 victory over Halifax. The Patriots earned a firstround bye in the Region 5A North tournament. They went into action in the region semifinals on Monday. Whittemore was feeling good before the game started. “When I was warming up, I was feeling good and loose,” Whittemore said. “I had a feel-
ing it was going to be a good game.” She said it was a challenge meeting the Comets for the first time in the conference playoffs. “I’d never seen them play, so I had to go in there with my strongest things,” Whittemore said. “Just go from there and see what they do with different pitches.” Patrick Henry head coach Shelby Webb was well pleased with Whittemore’s performance. “She came out firing,” Webb said. “She came out very determined today. She knew that our success moving forward was going to have a lot to do with her composure and her success on the mound. She came out and she threw probably one of the best games I’ve seen her throw.” Halifax head coach Melanie Saunders said Patrick Henry excelled at manufacturing runs

What a difference a day makes. Atlee High School’s baseball team, which earned an upset victory in the quarterfinals of the Conference tournament Monday, looked to be holding its own against top-seed Douglas Freeman in the tournament semifinal at Deep Run High School Wednesday night when storms moved into the area and forced a suspension of play. Overnight, however, the Rebels adjusted their focus, and when play resumed Thursday, they wasted no time beating up
on the Raiders en route to earning a 10-0 victory. The interruption occurred during a stubborn duel between Raiders’ batter Collin Bazemore and Rebels’ pitcher Daniel Lynch. Bazemore had fought Lynch off to a long 3-2 count and looked like he could continue fighting far beyond the 13 pitches that had been thrown so far. “For whatever reason we didn’t play with the fire or urgency last night that we usually do,” said Douglas Freeman head coach Ray Moore. “Today our guys brought that. We put our best guy out on the mound, [Miller Trevvett]’s our closer. We wanted the ball in his hands
at the end of the game. … We’re a better team when he’s on the mound.” The Rebels were. Trevvett got Bazemore to ground out to shortstop when play resumed Thursday night. He struck out seven Atlee batters the rest of the game. Offensively, they scored three runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth inning. Kyle Farkas led the charge, going 2 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Logan Harvey had two doubles, and Trent Young and Sam Cox each scored two runs and stole a base. “It’s been a tough year,” said see OUTS, pg. 32

Raiders second in Richmond Group lacrosse By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch Last year, Sarah Fortune suffered a stress fracture in her shin while running indoor track. When lacrosse season came, she hoped to play through the injury. But the pain became too much. She missed all but five games of her sophomore season. While her teammates played, she was relegated to resting, stretching and keeping her leg submerged in icy water. “It was rough because I love this game,” Fortune said. “It was hard just sitting back.” On Tuesday, Fortune led Douglas Freeman with three goals and propelled the No. 1-seeded Rebels to a 9-6 victory over No. 2 Atlee in the Richmond Group final. Fortune’s junior year, 2014, was the year she needed to be back. This was the year the Rebels could contend for the area championship. Freeman added five freshmen to the roster. One of them, Alyssa Hahn, had two goals Tuesday. Plus, the Rebels already had on the roster senior Halle Kennon, committed to Christopher Newport, and junior goalie Jamie Lockwood, who has committed to Duke. After the game, Lockwood was named Richmond Group player of the year. From the onset of the season they knew, “If we’re going to (the championship), this is the team we’re going with,” coach Anne Taylor said. The first half went back and forth, and Freeman held a 4-3 lead at halftime. Atlee (13-2) scored a goal at the first-half buzzer when Jessica Sanfilippo received a long pass down field, and Sanfilippo tossed to Sara Hatch. Hatch put the ball in the goal as the horn sounded. But Freeman scored the first

three goals of the second half -- Fortune had two of them -- and never let Atlee back in the game. Four of Freeman’s points came off penalties. Atlee scored none off penalties. This is Freeman’s fourth season at the Virginia High School League level and its first championship as a varsity team. Ten Richmond-area public schools fielded lacrosse teams this year, more than ever before. So to win a title now means more than ever. “So many more kids are playing,” Taylor said. “The strength of teams has improved a lot.” BOYS Douglas Freeman is used to playing through hot streaks and cold streaks. When the season began, they would sometimes play one good quarter and three bad ones. Now, they’re playing three good quarters and just one is subpar. Against Atlee, Freeman finished the game on a hot streak and won 10-6 to claim the Richmond Group championship. “I can’t describe how great it is to win this championship,” junior attack John Woolley said. His explanation for Freeman’s uneven performance is a simple one. They’re high school kids, and sometimes emotion gets the best of them. Freeman jumped out to a 4-0 lead, as Evan Tyler scored three of the first four goals. But Atlee (12-4) pecked away and had a 6-5 lead by the middle of the third quarter. The Rebels, though, scored the final five goals of the game. “We can’t always be perfect,” Woolley said. Woolley recorded four goals and two assists. Tyler finished

Atlee head coach Barry Burton. “It was always hard to get continuity and consistency and I think that showed up tonight as well.” Defensive breakdowns in the final innings Monday cost Lee-Davis a chance to advance to the conference semifinals. The Confederates had a tworun lead going into the sixth inning when Hermitage tied the game. The Panthers scored a run in the seventh inning to claim a 3-2 victory. “We just didn’t make the plays. The kids know that,” said Lee-Davis head coach Kenny Lewis. “Errors in the field were
costly – two runs. In a close game, it’s the little things, and we just didn’t play clean.” Hermitage’s leadoff batter, Kendall Jordan, opened the seventh with a single. Lee-Davis reliever Cody Powers struck out the Panthers’ next batter, then walked Dylan Stowell to leave runners at first and second with one out. Zack Overstreet then hit a grounder to second base. Stowell was called out on interference, but a throwing error on an attempt to get Overstreet at first allowed Jordan to score the winning run. Dylan Stowell led Hermitage, going 2 for 2 with one run scored. Andrew Sergeant was 1 for 2 with an RBI for Lee-Davis.
