Community rallies to support local man injured in accident By Jodi Deal jdeal@mechlocal.com When Grayson Kirby arrived at the University of Virginia Medical Center on June 7, things looked grim. The 31-year-old Studley native had been catching a ride to his truck at a motorsports event that night in Ruckersville when the vehicle he was riding in flipped and he was ejected, according to his brother, Graham Kirby. Kirby’s injuries were catastrophic. He sustained major head trauma, scores of broken bones and punctured and collapsed lungs, Graham said. Initially, the prognosis wasn’t good. Doctors told the Kirby family that Grayson had a five percent chance of survival. He was put into a medically induced coma and hooked up to a heart and lung machine.

Four days before Hanover Emergency Center’s June 16 grand opening, director Lee Van Sise, RN, and his staff were putting the finishing touches on the new $10 million facility located at the entrance to the Rutland mixed-use development. Nurses in new deep blue scrubs were participating in employee orientation workshops as computer technicians double-checked software in the facility’s resuscitation room, which was stocked with several different code carts full of medicine and equipment the staff will use to stabilize the most critical patients. Some staff members unpacked boxes of equipment and supplies, while others tested automatic doors leading to the

Accident claims truck driver’s life Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Monday at approximately 12 p.m., the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 13500 block of Verdon Road for a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer,
according to Lt. Chris Whitley. The driver and sole occupant died at the scene, Whitley said. At press time, the name of the deceased had not yet been released, pending the notification of next-of-kin. Whitley said that preliminary investigation indicated that
a 1999 Kenworth tractor-trailer was traveling east on Verdon when it entered into a curve, crossed the center line, and ran off the left side of the roadway. It then struck an embankment and overturned on the left side, which entrapped the driver. The truck was hauling a full load of
milk. Verdon Road was closed between Hewlett Road and New Market Mill Road at press time, and Whitley said it would remain closed as deputies investigated the crash, and as crews worked to remove the vehicle and other debris from the roadway.

Planners and developers saw the site, situated at the mouth of the growing Rutland subdivision at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Atlee Road, as having a need for an additional healthcare facility. If volumes are higher than expected, personnel levels will be adjusted accordingly. Sise proudly walked visitors around the brand-new 22,000square-foot facility during a June 12 open house, pointing out high tech amenities like a 3-D Tomosynthesis mammography machine, which takes 3D digital images of breast tissue that can allow doctors to catch breast cancer earlier. than 6,000 members. “We had a large gathering of Grayson’s friends on the page, and before long, through six degrees of separation or whatever you want to call it, it started trickling from his friends to his friends’ friends who had met him once or twice. Slowly but surely, it started reaching people who had never met Grayson or any of us,” Graham said. “The well-wishes and prayers just kept building.” Brittany Dunn, one of Grayson’s friends, designed a t-shirt for the family to wear
in support of the injured man. Dunn visited the family at UVA the weekend of the accident, and said the idea came to her as her mind kept wandering back to Grayson when she returned to work. “I knew immediately I had to put his most loved truck on it which is his 2006 Kenworth ‘Farm Kid’ Big Rig. Grayson loves his ‘Farm Kid’ truck and I have never seen that thing dirty!” Dunn said. She joked that the beloved truck has so many LED lights on it, it could probably be seen from space. For the shirt’s color, she picked red, Grayson’s favorite color. Members of the commu-
nity started buying them by the hundreds. By Monday, David and Alexa Booth, the owners of Inkt VA, a Hanover County business that printed the shirts, reported via Facebook that they had raised more than $11,000 for the family through shirt sales alone. Dunn’s sister, Hollie Gooch, also had rubber bracelets printed with GWKStrong, the name Graham chose for the Facebook group that started the movement. OPINION | The Local Views Guest commentary
From the editor
Don’t second guess HCBOS chairman provides anybody on politics clarity over Internet concerns No matter what you may read in this space, do not try to interpret this writer’s political beliefs. Chances are you’ll be wrong. The only comment that will ever be addressed when it comes to candidates and elections is that we have a responsibility to vote. We don’t play favorites on this page in our usage of letters to the editor. That’s your opinions, not those of anybody on our staff. This seems to be confusing to some readers — and I don’t know why. It’s says “Reader Views” and that’s exactly what is provided. Our readers get the opportunity to express themselves in that forum. Do we agree with every letter we publish? Of course not. Do we fully support your right to address issues of importance to you and possibly our community? Absolutely. Before the June 10 Primary Election, letters appeared about candidates Eric Cantor and David Brat. At no point did we attempt to sway the voters’ choice at the polls. Without a doubt, many of us were surprised at Cantor’s defeat. He was gracious on national television in talking about his loss. Some will say he served the 7th District well, others will not. That race is over and it’s a new day for those of us who make our homes in the 7th District. We now look toward the Nov. 4 General Election with Randolph-Macon College professors Republican David Brat and Democrat Jack Trammell facing off. Libertarian James Carr also is on the ballot. Who do you consider the best representative for our district? Be heard by going to the polls and casting your ballot.

By Sean Davis Special to The Mechanicsville Local Let me be clear, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors has never stopped any Internet provider from supplying service to Hanover County residents. If anyone states something to the contrary, it is simply not accurate. No one can dispute that high speed Internet is an increasingly vital component of modern communications for business, education, entertainment, social interaction and the conduct of everyday transactions such as banking, paying bills and shopping. It also is true that some Hanover residents
enjoy access to generally more reliable and faster Internet access than other residents. Most residents who live within developed portions of the suburban area of the county, and a few residents outside of this area, have access to Internet service through cable provided by Comcast. For those without cable service, Internet access may be available through their “land line” telephone service provider, a cellular service provider or a satellite service provider. However, these options may not be available in all locations and may not be as reliable or affordable for some users
as Internet access provided by cable. For understandable reasons, many residents in rural areas would like to have the same access to cable Internet service that is available to many residents in the more densely populated areas of the county. In order to better understand these concerns, to correct some inaccurate information circulating in the community and to explain the actual role and authority of county government regarding high speed Internet service in Hanover, I held a well-advertised community meeting at Battlefield Park Elementary School in June of last year. see INTERNET pg. 19

for court and expected the lawyers to be the same. Justice Compton served with integrity and principle; sometimes being the only dissenter on the Supreme Court in several cases. While I believe — based on my meager research — that Justice Compton would be best for the name of the new Hanover Courthouse, I do not claim to be thorough in that research. Therefore, I think there should be a committee appointed by the Hanover County Board of Supervisors to investigate this further and report to the board some ideas as for the new courthouse name. The courthouse could be named after more than one person and there may be a historically prominent attorney or other court official or judge that would also be ideal for

As a resident of the 7th District of Virginia, the news of Eric Cantor’s defeat by the hands of Dave Brat, the subject of many jokes between my father and me, was followed by shock and disbelief on my part. Cantor has long had an iron grip on the district, having beaten the last candidate who dared oppose him in 2012 by 17 percent of the vote. Cantor has served as a congressman to the 7th District for
14 years, and, for most of that time, he had strong support from our heavily conservative district. Only fairly recently did Cantor’s name appear in a negative light on the all-toofamiliar yellow signs owned and maintained by the local Tea Party. The signs complained that Cantor was becoming out of touch with his district, too accustomed to the smoothtalking life of an ambitious Washington, D.C., politician. He had forgotten one of the most basic rules of politics, which is to always stay focused on your constituents, the people who elected you. He failed to realize that there was discontent spreading. He was too focused on his career, too ambitious. Already he had the role of House Majority Leader, a role usually occupied by aging men nearing 70. Finally, primary season
came and a new name crept up onto the bright yellow signs. Dave Brat, economist. Dave Brat, conservative hero. Dave Brat, family man. Cantor was defeated by a man whose campaign centered on illegal immigration, smaller government and no compromises. The reason Cantor lost the primary election on June 10 is simple: Republicans who supported Cantor felt no need to go and vote in the primary, because they believed that Cantor had the district locked up tight. But the hard-core supporters of the Tea Party candidate Dave Brat did show up that night, and so did hundreds, if not thousands, of Democrats who voted for Brat. They didn’t vote for Brat because they liked him. Quite the opposite actually. They showed up to vote for Brat because they thought
the mission of St. John’s Church Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is to ensure the historic preservation of St. John’s Church, a National Historic Landmark in recognition as the original location of Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” speech,
and to provide educational programs, tours and re-enactments. Speaking to the appointments, Sarah Whiting, executive director, said, “We are thrilled to have Del. Chris Peace and Mrs. Cross as new board members. Their leader-
ship, character and commitment to serving our community is invaluable and vital to sustaining the work of St. John’s Church Foundation.” For more information or to schedule a visit to St. John’s Church visit: http://historicstjohnschurch.org/.

“It’s not about rules. It’s about a loving and joyous relationship with God our Father, our provider and our strength . . . Oh, and did I mention … our friend?” Chester said he has taken
his comic gift and given it to God for full-time use. He said he believes that God wants to heal a hurting and lonely world with joy and laughter. see GOSPEL, pg. 34

efit concert at Cullens Cove on Saturday. Decals, hats, business signs, Facebook profile photos and more were all dedicated to the cause. “It’s certainly turned into something way cooler than I could ever have imagined,” Graham said, adding that the growth of the Facebook group and community awareness gave the family something more important than money — prayers. “As it picked up stream, a whole bunch of folks rallied behind him and prayed for him. We’re all firm believers in the fact that that’s what’s gotten him to where he is so fast. There’s strength in numbers.” By Wednesday, June 18, Grayson’s heart and lungs had recovered enough to operate on their own, and he had woken up from his coma — a development the doctors didn’t expect for up to two months. According to Graham, his brother was responding to simple questions and directions — also a major development, as the extent of his head trauma was somewhat unknown. “He’s created his own legend at UVA since he got here,” Kirby said. “All the doctors and nurses and surgical staff have been astounded by his quick turnaround. Between that and all the people showing up, all the support he’s had, the Facebook page, the shirts — it’s been something that everybody can’t help but talk about, even here. Some of the doctors and nurses are signing in and commenting on the Facebook page saying how miraculous his recovery has been.” The family has had up to 40 visitors at a time with them in the waiting room, all laughing and telling stories, Graham said. “It’s been a party on the fifth floor since Grayson got here,” see GRAYSON, pg. 15

On June 29, 2014, Harold and Virginia Clark of Mechanicsville will celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary. They met at a dance in March 1963. The following month, they secretly began dating, as Virginia’s father would not allow her to date until she had graduated high school in June. Two months later, on June 29, following her high school graduation, Harold and Virginia slipped off to Dillon, South Carolina where they eloped. Upon returning home, when Virginia’s grandmother learned about their marriage she said, “Six months, I give that marriage six months.” In June 2013 Harold and Virginia cruised to their home away from home, the island of Freeport in the Bahamas. They arrived to a warm welcome from the staff at the Grand Lucayan Hotel, the local newspaper, local news and the
Director of Tourism. Prior to their arrival, the Clark’s had been asked to be interviewed for a new Bahamian Tourism video, since they had been going there at least once a year for the past 20 years. When asked what the secret to their 50 years of wedded bliss was, Harold responded, “not going to bed angry, a lot of love and LOTs of Yes, Dear’s.” On Saturday, June 29, 2013, surrounded by family and love, they renewed their vows in a beachfront ceremony, for the second time. According to their oldest daughter, Donna Gammon, “Mom and Dad’s faith in God, marriage, and their love for one another is an inspiration to us all, especially in today’s world. And to think, great grandma only gave them six months.” Harold and Virginia have been blessed with fourchildren, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Graham said. “Grayson is the life of the party. No matter where he is, he lights the room up,” Graham said. “He’s always smiling and having fun. People are just sort of drawn to him.” Graham added that his brother, an Atlee High School graduate, seems to find a way to make it to every event, and to visit regularly with his large crew of friends. The exhausted family, including parents Wayne and Karen Kirby, aunt and uncle Sandy and Ned Smither, and Graham’s fiancée, Liz, is overwhelmingly grateful for the staggering support they’ve received. From the helicopter crew that got Grayson to the hospital quickly to the doctors and nurses who have worked on him, from the maintenance crew who has checked on the family in the waiting room to friends who are feeding the family’s dogs and watering Karen’s flowers, the Kirbys have much to be thankful for, Graham said. “From the tiniest of well wishes all the way up to the big gifts and donations, we really, really appreciate it all,” Graham said. “It will take us a million years once this has blown over to thank everybody. This has been remarkable and amazing. It’s refreshing to see.” Dunn also offered thanks to the community for the groundswell of support. “The power of prayer is unreal and I’m a true believer all the prayers are helping him day by day,” Dunn said. “Just seeing the sea of red in the community not only brings tears of joy to my eyes but to see the happiness it is bringing the Kirby Family is something you could never replace — it has kept the Kirby family strong and positive knowing the community is rallying for Grayson,” Dunn said.

Creek a few years back. I visited the local Comcast office and spoke to a sales manager, and here’s what I learned at that time: The carriers need some minimum number of customers per mile of wire to justify the expense of installing and maintaining the equipment, and that minimum can be hard to meet in the more rural areas. Exactly to what extent Hanover County government can influence this, I don’t know, but I would think they could within limits. Counties can unwittingly help create this problem when they impose minimum acreage lots zoning restrictions to preserve a rural feel in an area, for example. While I don’t know whether it’s factual, I have heard from multiple sources that Hanover Reading Gene Wells’ letter County has restricted Comcast in the June 4, 2014, edition on where they can provide serbrought back some memories. vice. that having an extreme, Tea Party-supported candidate in the General Election might actually give their candidate a chance come November. Now that the results of the primary are in, and things have somewhat settled, it leaves people wondering, what next? What happens now that we don’t have Eric Cantor? Suddenly, the 7th District of Virginia is no longer represented by the big shot. No longer do we have the Majority Leader of the House. We have Dave Brat, who will undoubtedly win in November. Brat, who has zero political experience whatsoever, will fall into the ranks of 435 other congressmen in the House of Representatives. Cantor had power in the House, but Brat will have none. congressmen believed that he was a tireless patriot for the conservative cause. Eric Cantor served in the Virginia House of Delegates for eight years before running for the House of Representatives position. Dave Brat may just find himself lost amid a sea of Washington politics. At a time when the aisle between the two parties in Congress seems to become wider every day, another conservative politician unwilling to compromise is not what we need in order to make progress. reason why, in today’s world, this would be so, but such things seldom have logic behind them. Back then, the person I talked to at Comcast did tell me that if I was willing to pay the costs of them running the cable (at that time, several thousand dollars), they would run a line directly to my house, but that once said line was in place they still owned it and could add other customers along the run without compensating me. I ended up using satellite dish Internet for about a year (horrible then; I doubt that it’s materially better now) and then Verizon got DSL to us. The DSL was, as you’re experiencing, spotty at best . . . better than nothing, but not acceptable for heavy teleworking, which I do the majority of the week. I eventually moved, careful to pick a new home with solid cable coverage.

The obvious reason that cable service has not been extended by Comcast (or by anyone else) in the rural areas of the county is that running cable is very expensive, and it is not profitable without a certain number of customers per mile of cable. Comcast has a long-standing franchise agreement with Hanover County for the provision of cable television services within the county, which authorizes Comcast to utilize public rights of way to extend cable service, subject to a number of conditions. It is through this cable system that Comcast now provides Internet access. One of the more important conditions of the franchise agreement is that Comcast cannot restrict service only to the most profitable (that is, existing, higher density) areas of the county, but also must run cable to newer developing areas of the county when the number of households per mile reaches a specified threshold. The Comcast franchise
agreement is non-exclusive. It does not prevent Verizon or any other cable service provider from coming into Hanover under similar terms and conditions to provide television services, and it does not regulate Internet service providers at all. Some residents of the rural areas have asked the Board of Supervisors to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize the provision of high speed Internet service in rural areas by private companies or for the county to undertake to provide this service itself. However, to extend cable service into the rural areas of the county would be prohibitively expensive. That is why Comcast and Verizon have not done it. In my view, it would be improper for the Board of Supervisors to raise taxes on all of the businesses and residents of Hanover County, including those located in the suburban areas where this service is already available, to extend cable Internet into the rural areas. Moreover, I believe that this would be a wholly inappropriate expansion of the role of government in Hanover County.
What Hanover County has done, however, is construct a grid of towers across the county whose principal function is to provide essential emergency communications for Hanover’s public safety personnel. These towers also were specifically designed to accommodate the antennas of private sector communication service providers. As demand warrants continued investment by private sector providers (such as Verizon), “3G” and “4G” service, which provides Internet access, is spreading and will continue to spread across the county. Advancing technology will ultimately make high speed Internet access available across all of Hanover County. It is the proper role of Hanover County government to encourage and facilitate this service, but not to provide it in competition with the private sector. As always, please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, concerns and ideas. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Sean M. Davis serves as chairman of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.

New criminal laws take effect July 1
28 Years Experience in Hearing Care
(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Ramon E. Chalkley III, Hanover County Commonwealth’s Attorney.) I write to inform my fellow citizens of certain changes to existing criminal statutes and new criminal laws taking effect on July 1, 2014. This is a summary of legislation passed by the General Assembly and, is in no way, all inclusive of all new legislation from the last session. I have addressed those items I believe to be of the most interest to my fellow citizens. The Motor Vehicle Code (Title §46.2 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended) was amended to include “autocycle.” An autocycle is defined as “a three-wheeled motor vehicle that has a steering wheel that does not require the operator to straddle or sit aside and is manufactured to comply with federal safety requirements for motorcycles.” An autocycle is not a three-wheeled motorcycle.
Drivers and passengers must wear the same safety equipment as with motorcycles (helmet with faceshield or goggles), the autocycle must be equipped with seatbelts, have a headlight, a taillight, a brake light and display a rear license plate. All mopeds must be titled and registered through DMV. The moped must display a rear license plate. The provision providing for an administrative suspension of the driver’s license of one charged with operating under the influence if the operator provided a breath test of .08 or greater or refused to submit to a breath test was amended to include an administrative license suspension for the operator who refused to submit to either a breath test or a blood test. Previously, the operator who was unable to provide a breath sample but refused a blood test was not subject to administrative suspension.

Drivers of commercial vehicles will be prohibited from using a handheld mobile telephone while driving a commercial vehicle. This is an expansion from the prohibition on texting. It is applicable only when driving, not merely operating. A mobile telephone is not a CB radio. One convicted of being an accessory after the fact to a homicide offense punishable by death or as a Class 2 felony will be guilty of a Class 6 felony (up to five years). Currently, the punishment is as a Class 1 misdemeanor. The sexual battery code section added a provision of within a two-year period, one who sexually abuses more than one complaining witness or one complaining witness on more than one occasion, intentionally and without the consent of the complaining witness, is guilty of sexual battery. Prior convictions of strangulation and/or unlawful wounding will count as prior convictions to trigger the felony charge of domestic assault, third or subsequent offense. These prior offenses can be used to enhance the offense
from a misdemeanor to a felony with the resulting increased punishment. Various criminal sexual assault statutes were amended to clarify the acts prohibited as well as to clarify the sex crimes prohibited by the crimes against nature code section. The amendments did not expand the prohibited acts or increase the penalty upon conviction, but merely added more definitive language as to the specific acts prohibited. An amendment to the adultery and fornication statute defines parent as including step-parent, grandparent as step-grandparent, and child as step-child and grandchild as step-grandchild. The General Assembly passed a new law (§18.2-386.2) to criminalize dissemination of certain images. “Any person who, with intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate, maliciously disseminates or sells any videographic or still image created by any means whatsoever that depicts another person who is totally nude, or in a state of undress so as to expose the genitals, pubic area, buttocks or female breast, where see LAWS, pg. 32

HABITAT Continued from pg. 7
was just that — a dream. On June 1, their dream came true. The Herreras moved into their new home in Bailey Woods, Hanover Habitat’s nine-home neighborhood on Ashcake Road. Bailey Woods is the firstever neighborhood project for Hanover Habitat. The Herrera family’s home was constructed by community volunteers and volunteers from the local faith community, who participated in Faith Build 2014.
During April and May, Faith Build 2014, was able to put their “faith in action” by volunteering on the Bailey Woods construction site. Hanover Habitat for Humanity extended its thanks to the following congregations for the hours they devoted on the construction site this spring: Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Brook Hill, Overbrook Presbyterian Church, Messiah Lutheran Church, Atlee Community Church, Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Ashland Church of God. Hanover Habitat recogniz-
es its 2014 Covenant Church Partners: Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Brook Hill, Messiah Lutheran Church, Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church and Fairmount Christian Church. As Covenant Church Partners, those four congregations have agreed to pray, serve and support Hanover Habitat for Humanity, making affordable housing a priority in their congregation’s giving to mission. Seventeen congregations provided financial support during the past year. Without the support of the faith community, Habitat
representatives said that the Herraras would not be able to move forward in their journey of building a better life. Houses are still under construction in Bailey Woods. There are opportunities for the faith community to place the keys to the next safe, decent, affordable home in Bailey Woods in the hands of a hardworking, deserving Hanover family through service. If your congregation would like to schedule a day of volunteer fellowship on the worksite, contact Laura Oliveira, volunteer coordinator, at loliveira@ hanoverhfh.org.
For more information about participating as a Covenant Church Partner, contact Mary Brame, director of development, mbrame@ hanoverhfh.org. Anyone who may know a Hanover County family in search of an affordable home is encouraged to invite them to contact Gwen Stockman, family services coordinator, at gstockman@hanoverhfh.org. She also can provide information on how to qualify as a Habitat partner family. To reach Hanover Habitat for Humanity staff, call 804569-6108.
About Hanover Habitat for Humanity Hanover Habitat for Humanity is an interfaith nonprofit Christian organization, committed in partnership with qualified families and community volunteers to create and sell homes with noprofit mortgages. Through responsible and affordable homeownership, its partner families can break the cycle of poverty and build brighter futures. In addition, working together to construct homes strengthens community bonds and improves the county.

I’d suggest first talking to the county, probably the zoning or planning office. If some legal barrier is preventing you from getting service, you need to know. If that’s not the case, and you have neighbors between you and those cable ends, talk to them. If you can show Comcast that several potential customers are being missed, they may be willing to run the cable the rest of the way, or, in the worst case, several of you can go in together on the costs of running the cable. Good luck. Steve Sneed Mechanicsville

subway in the former Communist country of Hungary. Their sour faces got ripe real fast. I think it was their first outburst of public laughter in years.” And then there was the time when three teenage girls in Budapest asked him why he was so happy. “So, naturally I told them my secret. That was one of those times I learned how God used comedy. They don’t teach Elvis 101 in the seminary.” Chester’s performances are not restricted to those of the Christian faith. He said he has enjoyed “lots of laughter with his Jewish friends at Beth Shalom senior center, where he also holds Christian services for anyone who wants some joy.” He also spends time with Catholic seniors at Our Lady of Hope in the West End, and works on a regular basis with the Baptist International Mission Board. “It’s not about religious affiliation . . . it’s about God’s children,” he said. For more information on Chester and his nonprofit work, contact him at joyinc@comcast. net or visit www.joyinc.info.

the gospel by playing and joking with him. Chester said the joy of Jesus takes center stage in his performances and he had a following with his visits to village and on city streets. Based on those reactions, he said he “knew that God was calling me to take what I had been doing for years and to get serious about it. He wanted me to get serious about my silliness. Imagine that. I considered his offer for awhile. Then I took the leap.” Since deciding to make his joyous spreading of the gospel a major part of his life, Chester said he has “visited thousands of senior citizens, mental health centers and day cares, Massey Cancer Center and scores of locations in Virginia.” He also has taken his show to five continents. He said he’s “made folks laugh in the slums of India, in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador and countless villages in Africa.” He enjoyed telling the story about doing his Elvis impersonation for “three sad ladies on a

Rather than playing nightclubs and corporate events around the country, Chester goes to hospitals, senior facilities and impoverished communities around the world. In 2007, he started his nonprofit ministry called “JOY InC. “For a long time I had been singing with my piano partner, Debra Willis, at senior facilities around the Richmond area with great response. I didn’t treat them like china dolls. I’d just slap ’em on the back, sit on their laps — even pull them out of their chairs to dance. The response was amazing,” he recalled. “On another occasion, a good friend asked me to visit her elderly mom in the hospital because . . . she was a big fan of mine. She told me her mom was very sick. I didn’t want to just walk in and say ‘Hello,’ so I tried something different. I dressed up as Elvis and sauntered in and sang a song or two. Then I stepped into her bathroom and came out as Willie Nelson . . . then Bill Clinton . . . and others,” Chester said.
“I then left her with an autographed picture of Bill Bevins, Steve ‘Mr. Beach’ Leonard and myself as a joke. My friend told me that she showed that picture to everyone who came in the room and told them about all the celebrity visitors she had.” Her daughter told him that his visit “made her day.” After that encounter, he decided to continue with his unique — and entertaining — form to aid in the healing process. Whenever he visited the hospital, he said he took along his costume bag. “It always seemed to bring a little healing to the folks I visited.” A couple of years later, he traveled to Niger, Africa, making what was his third trip to one of the poorest countries in the world. With his home church, Mechanicsville Christian Center, he said he was to be taking part in a building trip, but spent most of the time joking around with the local children — of all ages. He had taken his costume bag to Africa and, according to Chester, “they loved it.” He said he was able to provide a different kind of ministry and show them

Mechanicsville-area home for his school-aged daughter. The device issued faulty readings for several hours May 7 indicating it had been tampered with, prompting court services personnel to issue a show cause order against Carlson that could have resulted in revoking his bond. While a formal notification was issued in a matter of days, Campbell was critical of the fact that weeks passed before Carlson was contacted. Menzies, 34, a mother of three young children married to an Ashland police officer, was fatally struck by Carlson’s vehicle Jan. 13 as she was running with her husband on the west-
bound shoulder of East Patrick Henry Road just west of U.S. Route 301. The 2008 Toyota Sequoia struck Menzies and narrowly missed her husband as the two rounded a gradual curve not far from their home. There was a stunning reaction to Menzies’ death in which thousands of runners engaged in impromptu memorial runs in her memory. Hundreds of running shoes left by mourners near where she died surrounded a street marker at Hickory Hills Road off Patrick Henry Road. Carlson faces a preliminary hearing July 1. He is charged with driving under the influence and involuntary manslaughter. He is on leave from his medical duties with the Bon Secours Health System.

The Rutland community knows exactly how to celebrate the last day of the school year. The rain didn’t stop the kids or the residents. When the children got off the bus, they were greeted with water soakers, treats and games during the annual Summer Starts Now Splashdown. “Let the summer fun begin! was the theme of the afternoon.

Beach week no problem for Post 175 hitters By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com COLONIAL HEIGHTS – Mechanicsville Post 175 second baseman Josh Shepherd did not hit like someone coming off a week-long vacation with no batting practice. Shepherd, who had returned from a well-earned week beach break the day before, had four hits in six at-bats and scored two runs in helping lead Post 175 to an 11-2 victory over the Colonial Heights Post 284 Buccaneers at Shepherd Stadium Sunday afternoon. Even though he had not practiced, Shepherd said he stuck with a strategy that helped him lead Hanover High School to a Virginia High School League Group 4A state baseball championship the week before. “I just stuck with the plan: hunt fast balls, let them get deep, hit them out of the catcher’s mitt,” Shepherd said. “I was fortunate enough to get a couple of base hits, so it went well.” He was a bit surprised at his success, given his vacation. “I didn’t think I was going to be as successful as I was today,” Shepherd said. Shepherd led a Mechanicsville squad that picked up 15 hits total. Three other Post 175 players had multiple-hit performances: Cody Powers, who went 2 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and an

and two RBI. While Post 175 hit well, the team got help from Post 284B’s defense, which committed five errors. Post 284B head coach Merrill Morgan said the
Buccaneers came out a bit flat after a 7-5 victory over a tough Post 125 team the night before. “I told them we had more errors than we had hits,” Morgan said of his post-game chat with
his team. “You don’t win when that happens. I thought we pitched well enough to stay in the game, but we made a crucial error here or there that opened the game up for [Post 175].
That’s just baseball. “Saturday we played much better. We were able to come through with a win in that game and today we didn’t. I guess we were a little too confident and didn’t play well.” The game was tied at 1-1 through the first three innings. Lamb opened the game with a double, advanced on a groundout by Shepherd, and scored on an error. Post 284B’s leadoff batter Rashad Steward singled and scored on a double by Grayson Trower. Mechanicville broke the game open in the fourth inning. Shepherd led off with a single. Christian Buckler reached on an error. Trevor Denton and Thompson followed with backto-back singles and Powers and Sergent followed with back-toback walks. Shepherd, Buckler, Denton, Thompson and Powers all scored to give Post 175 a 5-1 advantage. Post 175 head coach Bobby White is glad to have his team – which, in addition to Hanover, draws from Atlee and Lee-Davis with one player from Louisa – back from vacation and the season started. “I’m excited for the opportunity,” White said. “I think we’ve got a really good group of kids this year – guys who, if nothing else, enjoy playing the see POST 175, pg. 45
Post 206 struggles in battle of youth vs. experience By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com
Ashland starting pitcher Brett Whitlow, one of Post 206’s more experienced players with a year under his belt at Eastern Mennonite University, came out a bit shaky in the first inning, giving up six Post 201 runs on three hits and four walks. But he recovered and followed with three strong innings before his pitch count caught up with him and he yielded the mound to Joe Buehren, a recently graduated senior from Patrick Henry High School. Buehren pitched the fifth inning and Troy Forillo got Dave Lawrence/The Local thrown into a meatgrinder in Ashland Post 206’s Brett Whitlow dives back to first base to beat the pickoff attempt by the sixth, giving up nine Post Powhatan Post 201 pitcher Kevin Oakey and first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino in Post 201’s 18-2 201 runs on four hits, three victory over Post 206 at Powhatan High School Saturday. errors, three walks and one hit what Post 206 is going through ago,” Hannum said. “I remem- guys a game, it was tough. … batter. “We wanted to see what right now. ber what that was like, to be I definitely understand where [Forillo] had,” Crawley said. “They were us four years completely honest. Having 13 they’re coming from.”
POWHATAN – Ashland Post 206 is in something of a construction zone, and Powhatan Post 201 took advantage of it. Post 201 took advantage of untested or rusty Post 206 pitching, racking up 11 hits en route to an 18-2 victory over the Ashland team in an American Legion baseball contest Saturday at Powhatan High School. Post 206, which returned to District 11 from District 13 last year, draws its players primarily from Patrick Henry and Louisa high schools and features few seniors and even fewer college players on its roster, while Post 201 draws a number of highly experienced players from James River and Powhatan high schools. “We’re very young, a very young team, but I’m hoping Continued from pg. 44 that changes for future years to come,” said Post 206 assistant coach Cody Crawley. “We’re game. Any time you can get just trying to grow right now.” Atlee, Hanover and Lee-Davis Post 206 needs to grow in experience, but also in numbers. Its already thin roster was depleted by a couple of vacationing players. Post 201 coach Bryan Hannum said he understands

together, you can be successful. We’ve got good athletes – we’ve got good kids, which is the most important thing. I think that is going to carry us through the summer.”
Ferrum bound
CORRECTION: Due to the way the results were printed on the site of the VHSL Group 3A/4A state track and field championships two weeks ago, our reporter inadvertently listed Hanover High School’s Leila Haynesworth as winner of the Group 4A girls’ triple jump competition. The actual winner was her teammate Taylor McCormick with a jump of 37 feet, 8 inches.
“He hadn’t even bullpenned for us. We kind of just rolled him out there.” Hannum said Powhatan is having its share of struggles, too, this early in the regular Legion season. “It’s all about timing for us right now,” Hannum said. “On paper, I think our team has been probably the best it’s ever been since I’ve been here – four years. But everybody’s just kind of off right now with their timing, especially at the plate. … Everybody just needs to get back in the flow of things. “Our defense is great. It hasn’t missed a beat, which is nice. That’s a good thing to have. But our pitching and our hitting have to get back. Those two, three weeks that we had off need to go away.”

A championship & a commencement By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com It’s not every day when a team wins a championship. Teams can go years, even decades, without one. An even rarer day is one in which members of a team, after having won a championship, get to go through their graduation ceremonies on the field upon which they won their title. Rarer still is when such team members do their graduation walk with a spotless robe over uniforms still carrying the sweat and dust with which they won their victory. Ten seniors on Hanover High School’s baseball team had that experience last week following their 7-2 victory over Millbrook in the Virginia High School League Group 4A state baseball championship game Saturday, Jun. 14. It was, to put it plainly, a cool thing to experience, and I felt it was too cool a thing not to share.
