The curiosity finally got the best of me, and I said, ‘Honey, what the heck are you doing?’ “ Although the family rarely had time to spare before work, Zach said, Renee was taking time to bag Cheerios to give as snacks for kids who might not have something to eat at school. The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services grant awarded to the Hanover Community Services Board will fund an off-duty sheriff ’s deputy to work at the center every day. The grant also funds a part-time peer specialist who has overcome similar mental health issues, along with funding transportation needs and the cost of setting up the site. “Another government handout for the first two years, and then what happens?” Hazzard asked at last week’s meeting. OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

Government can’t force service providers into areas Some Hanover County residents recently have spoken out in our letters to the editor forum concerning their expectations for high-speed Internet service in rural areas. This writer certainly understands the want part, but the reality is service is not always available where you choose to reside. And, while some folks are looking at government officials (as in the Hanover County Board of Supervisors) for help in getting the high-speed Internet service they want, this isn’t a magic wand situation. Government cannot demand an Internet provider bring service to areas where the customer base is limited. For the record, though, we learned last week that the supervisors are pursuing a major service provider. Talking is a big step toward possibly resolving the issue. Sean Davis, supervisors chairman, addressed the Internet issue in a guest commentary that appeared on this page on June 25. He emphasized that the supervisors have “never stopped any Internet provider from supplying service to Hanover County residents.” I’ll confess I’m not a “country girl” who yearns for the rural life. I’ve moved several times with my career and always seek housing with conveniences. In today’s world, that includes high-speed Internet. My home is in Mechanicsville in a highly populated area and I have the benefit of all the amenities, including high-speed Internet service. When you build or buy a home, and I realize some of you have been on family land for generations, we have to consider what is available and what can be expected to be provided, as well as who can bring that service to your location. Your government can only do so much and this is a case in point where the business side has to be on board. I also understand the standpoint of being a taxpayer. But, again, the supervisors cannot require an Internet service provider to invest what could be millions of dollars to come into an area with a few homes. On a related note, we inadvertently published the same letter to the editor twice (July 2 and 16) from Phillip Adams of Mechanicsville in response to Davis’ guest commentary. We apologize to Adams and Davis for the duplication. Melody Kinser

A week at Old Point Comfort By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Who doesn’t love a week at the beach? My children are spending this week at Virginia Beach with their mom, and their anticipation was inescapable with each passing day as they prepared for their trip. For those lucky enough to enjoy one, summer vacation is a welcomed respite from the everyday grind of our lives. Whether it’s a week in the mountains, or seven days at your favorite beach, there’s something about vacation evenings and star-filled nights that evokes pleasant memories for most of us.

As a child, my family spent a week each summer at a place called the Chamberlin Hotel at Fort Monroe. Located within the base and surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, the Chamberlin was a true resort, an escape from the ordinary, at least for us. Built in the 1920s, the hotel offered a degree of service seldom seen in even that era. Meals were served in a spacious dining room, with starched while linen services and bow-tied waiters. As visitors dined, large ships passed through the busy waterway. The hotel is located at Fort Monroe, the largest stone fort built in the United States, and the atmosphere was almost

mystic as uniformed troops drilled on the adjoining parade grounds. And, the Chamberlin offered its share of spookiness. In the 1820s, the infamous Hygeia Hotel occupied the very same spot and was frequented by famous visitors, including Edgar Allen Poe. The writer recited “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” on the expansive porch of the old hotel. It all made for a summer vacation that I’ve yet to equal in the many years since. Richmonders visited the popular resort throughout the 1960s and ’70s, but many bypassed the Fort Monroe see COMFORT, pg. 8

Bicyclist: roadways for all; rights should be shared My name is Cynthia Bashton and I ride my bike. I am a mother, daughter, sister and friend. I am also the health and safety coordinator for Bike Virginia, a 501(c)(3) that promotes bicycle tourism and other bicycling initiatives. I ride my bike to and from the grocery store, mail center, bank and for pleasure. I live in Eastern Hanover County and I am one of the slow-moving vehicles that persons in cars have to wait to pass. I often move to the middle of the lane when I feel that a car behind me cannot pass safely — then when the road is clear ahead I will move over to allow faster vehicles to pass. My healthy and active lifestyle may cause 30 to 45 seconds of delay on a roadway for drivers to safely pass me. I pay taxes to Hanover for my home and vehicles and support my local volunteer fire department. I do not believe that my running on the roadways or riding my bike on the roadways incurs any damage or creates a maintenance problem to these roads. I don’t feel the need to pay additional taxes for using the roads in this manner. Consider this: At 62, my healthy lifestyle may save each and every one of us money. In three years when I am eligible for Medicare, I currently don’t have any prescriptions or medical disabilities that taxpayers would have to subsidize. Riding my bike also saves on fossil fuels and is less polluting . . . besides being a great way to see our nation . . . “on

the back roads.” The roadways belong to all of us and we all share the rights and responsibilities, it is not something we have to put up with . . . it is part of being a citizen of the world we live in. With the passing of the 3-foot law, SB 97, cyclists should be safer and many drivers will be frustrated. Sometimes, as the driver of a motor vehicle, you may have to wait for an opportunity to pass, just as you do now with slower moving cars or trucks. Passing with three feet may require you to cross the center line, so you’ll need to make sure you have a good view of oncoming traffic before you make your move. SB 97 requires a driver to slow down to a reasonable speed and pass only when safe to do so. see LETTERS, pg. 8

Scouts from Troop 544, Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville, recently toured the North Anna nuclear power station works in Mineral. They were shown the entire nuclear energy path, from uranium mining to electricity production, generated their own electricity using muscle power, and saw a model of a nuclear reactor. Shown are, front, John D’Angelo, Jacob McCann and Clayton Robinson; middle, Patrick Chodorov, Thomas Darby and Scoutmaster Terry McCann; and, back, Vinny Guthrie, Parker Hohman, David Ciferno, Thomas Lamb, Jon Carroll and Mike Hohman.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Barney, 366948, is a 5-month-old male Labrador retriever. He has been given his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Barney is a very playful young man. He loves to chase his toy ball around the play yard. He also loves to interact with other dogs and people. Tipsy, 368572, is a 5-month-old male domestic shorthaired cat. He has been given his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV negative. Tipsy is a very nice kitty. He is very friendly to the touch and loves attention. He can be playful but is not too energetic. He would make a wonderful house pet for any family. The building closed in 2002 and, in 2003, Hurricane Isabel battered the aging building, and it remained shuttered until a massive renovation began in 2004 and ended with the opening of the Chamberlin as a retirement community in 2008. remember the excitement-filled nights in the basement of the old resort as we gathered in the game room with dozens of other vacationing youths. And I’ll never forget the crusty, leather-skinned old lifeguard who sat behind a cage and issued towels and small pins for your bathing suit each day. He worked for all the years we visited, and got darker each year. Unlike today’s action-filled vacations, you parked your car at the Chamberlin when you arrived and didn’t move it until you left. Everything you could want was on-site, and — even absent

televisions or air conditioning — I always looked forward to the trip. Back to my kids, I have a feeling their week will be much different from my weeks at the Chamberlin, but no less exciting and fulfilling. Before they departed, they asked me if I knew of any good restaurants in Virginia Beach and I thought hard to come up with an answer. “Yeah, go to Charlie’s Seafood and get the She Crab Soup. It’ s the best I ever had,” I finally replied. Problem is, I haven’t had any in three decades and who knows if it’s still there.

(Editor’s note: This email is a response to Melvin Southworth’s letter to the editor of July 16, 2014.) Mr. Southworth, Let me introduce myself — I am a Hanover neighbor. I work for a living, pay taxes and own registered vehicles, but I also ride a bicycle, and have, competitively and otherwise, for close to 30 years. I read your letter to the editor with empathy; while I have never been stuck behind a large group of bicyclists I can imagine how you feel. These large groups of cyclists you complain about are not the norm. They are part of an organized ride, either for charity, for example, the MS 150, or are riding with a bicycle club. I have ridden with cyclists like these and I can tell you that many of them are unaware of your feelings, many of them are unaware of the rules of the road, and many of them don’t care. In my experience, cyclists must ride single file when overtaken by traffic in Virginia. Similarly, it is law in Virginia for automobiles to slow down and allow 2 feet to pass a cyclist. I have a friend who was cut off by an automobile north of Ashland in April 2009 and

In 1987, Larry began Campbell’s Lawn Service with a push mower in the back of a car. broke his neck when he hit the car with his bike. He is now a quadriplegic. I recently read in the newspaper about a friend from Roanoke who was hit on a training ride by a woman with a suspended license; she broke his leg, shoulder, and ribs. I personally have been forced off the road by automobiles, hit

twice, had things thrown at me, and have heard profanity from passing vehicles. My point is this: it works both ways. There are bad drivers and there are bad cyclists. I am not going to stop riding for many reasons, but, most importantly, it is good for my health, and only riding roads with a shoulder is not a solution; I wouldn’t get much distance if I had to stick to roads with shoulders.

My advice is this: When you are stuck behind all those bicyclists hogging the road, have a little patience, it doesn’t happen every day, just like the odd driver who comes up behind me while riding and yells “get off the road.” while blaring their horn as they pass, it doesn’t happen every day. And the fact is there is not much either of us can do about it anyway. Erich Weissbart Mechanicsville

OBITUARIES Continued from pg. 13

Four loves described and defined Denny. He was a true patriot, who devoted his life to the service of his country. As a naval officer with combat service in Southeast Asia, he earned the Navy Air Medal five times and a Navy Commendation Medal. Following his aviation career, he dedicated 30 years to the Naval Intelligence Service, retiring as Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence in 2000. He was convinced that he could master the game of golf and loved a competitive match, earning his greatest thrill when he got his first hole-in-one. You could hear him shouting all over the golf course most mornings of the week. He

had a passion for the written word, constantly immersing himself in his “spy” books and sharing them with his friends. He ultimately completed his own book so that his family would have stories of his life. And he was always looking for someone to play a good game of Bridge. There will be a memorial service/ celebration at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, at the Hanover Country Club, 14314 Country Club Dr., Ashland, with casual dress requested, golf shirts are highly encouraged! Flowers are beautiful, but Denny believed the greatest tributes should be reserved for our veterans; the family would prefer a tribute be made in Denny’s honor to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

Harris’s interest grew in high school under the tutelage of Jeff Hall, then in college with aid from her mentor, Janet Niewald. In 2012, she received a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Undergraduate Fellowship and was given a solo exhibition that summer at the VMFA’s Pauley Center. She was the first undergraduate student to have a show in that facility, according to a press release from The Montpelier Center. “Even now, years after beginning the journey to try to understand art’s power and purpose, I am still discovering new voices, new works and new histories that keep me wanting to know more and to add my own voice to the seemingly chaotic masses of artists progressing today,” Harris said. Harris’s current exhibit is her third solo show. According to Harris, the works on display span her art career, including seven 5-by-

5-foot paintings and PZ, a painting that caught the eye of juror Geraldine Kiefer and won Harris the title of Best In Show at The Montpelier Center’s 2013 National Juried Exhibition. They range from colorful to monochromatic, Harris added. Harris also has shown her work at Gallery Flux in Ashland. Harris said that Fear Less, a 60-by-60-inch oil painting on paper, is one of her favorite pieces in the show, partially because she struggled with concepts of beauty and composition while creating it. “One thing I have noticed when addressing beauty is that you can quickly get bored with composed beauty,” Harris said. “If the colors are too perfect, the lines too placed, it becomes this non-living thing that looks more like an interior design element than an art entity. letting a piece be resolved at a somewhat ugly, dirty place.” The difficulty she had in completing the work, she added, makes it more beautiful. “In many ways, art relates very much to spirituality for me,” Harris said. “I’m still trying to figure out how to understand the world, an individual’s role in it, and the ideas of what comes after this world. Not knowing those answers is a terrifyingly liberating lack of knowledge because it gives me the right to choose my passion as my direction and not feel wrong by not choosing something that could be perceived as more ‘practical’.” For now, Harris lives in Hanover County, west of Ashland. Eventually, she hopes

to travel and live for at least a while on the west coast, and would like to live in a city where she can get around primarily by walking. “For all I know, I may relocate several times then find myself back home again,” Harris said. “People do tend to return to Hanover, I’ve noticed.” Learn more about Harris and see some of her work at www.amyharrisart.com. The Washington Post praises the Trio’s “. . . class menagerie of tunes . . . from Lou Reed to Louis Armstrong, The Beatles to Led Zeppelin, Dr. John to The Neville Brothers. They call

it Dixieland music for the 21st century, but it’s worth hearing now!” Their interpretation of classic tunes is equaled by their original works. Laverne and Zach said that Renee went out of her way to be a good friend. “She didn’t meet a stranger,” Laverne said. “She would go out of her way to make you feel special.” “She was a nut. She was everybody’s best friend,” Zach said. Friends turned to her for advice, for a shoulder to cry on, for help with wardrobe choices or party planning, he added. “Nobody was above anybody else — everyone was treated the same.” In addition to frequently letting her borrow clothes for special occasions and taking her kids out for days at the pool or ice cream, Robinson said Renee provided a desperately needed service last fall: wedding décor. With time running out and her budget growing thin, Robinson asked Renee for some decorating advice. Renee told her not to worry about a thing. With vases, colored stones, ribbons and other elements from her own house, Renee enthusiastically decked out the venue. “She just helped out when she didn’t have to,” Robinson said. “She lived life to the fullest.” From dressing up as a bug in celebration of National Insect Day to impromptu early morn-

ing crafting sessions, Renee always found a way to have fun and keep everyone laughing, Zach said. “I’d wake up at 7 a.m. and she and Avery would be downstairs doing crafts,” Zach said. “She was full of exuberant ideas for ways to have fun. I’ve made it a personal goal of mine to continue that tradition. I don’t think anyone can be as nutty as her but I’m going to do my best.” Finding peace, remembering Tiaras, notes, stuffed animals and flowers continue to arrive daily at the Mechanicsville Elementary School sign, which has turned into an impromptu memorial, Robinson said. A group of Renee and Zach’s friends organized a colorful balloon release at the school site the weekend after her death, she added. Renee’s Facebook page has been flooded with more than 1,000 photos in memory of the young teacher, and multiple charitable efforts are either underway or in the works. Brenda Rath, who has been friends with Laverne since the second grade, said she plans to organize a food drive this fall to collect kid-friendly foods at her dance school, the Diane Hale School of Dance in Ashland. She said a dance school is a perfect place to remember Renee, who was an avid dancer

and had performed with the Concert Ballet of Virginia. “Renee started dancing when she was young,” Rath said. “One of the things she wanted desperately was for her little girl Avery to get into dance. She couldn’t wait for the day her daughter got fitted for pointe shoes.” “She touched so many people,” Rath said. “This has had a profound impact on a lot of people, and I think it’s going to change a lot of people’s lives. She was so infectious. People want to continue what she was trying to do. It has been amazing to see everybody pick up a ball and run with it.” “Renee, she didn’t have to want for anything,” Laverne said. “She had everything, including the man of her dreams and a beautiful healthy baby girl, a mama who did cartwheels to her, a sister who adored her and looked up to her — she had everything,” she added. “She knew that it is important that people take care of people who don’t have what we’ve been afforded.” Now, Laverne added, people are feeling inspired. From an Eagle Scout who approached her about doing a project in her daughter’s memory to the families of former students who brought boxes of Cheerios to the memorial service, the gestures big and small are inspiring family members and helping

them heal. Zach said he’s glad to be able to smile and laugh again, and to see others doing so as well. “That was one of the most heartbreaking things to me in this whole process was to see people crying,” Zach said. “She wouldn’t have wanted that, I know she wouldn’t have.” Laverne and Zach said their faith has been a comfort through the loss. According to Zach, during graveside services for Renee, the crowd realized there was a rainbow in the sky and many snapped photographs. When he later examined the photos, he said he saw the word “Love” in the clouds and what appeared to be a baby angel. “My wife was four months pregnant,” Zach said. “I’ve come to peace with things, and I’ve realized in this terrible time that my wife made a choice. She said, ‘You know what, honey? You need to stay here and take care of Avery. I’ll go take care of this baby — we’ll divide and conquer.’ “ It still hurts every day, he added. “But in those clouds, I see the word ‘love’ just as clear as day. It’s too much not to mean something, to not be a sign. It speaks loudly to how great our God is,” Zach said. To make a contribution to Renee’s Cheerios, send a check to “Hanover Education Foundation, Attn: Renee’s Cheerios,” P.O. Box 1297, Ashland, VA 23005.

FIRE Continued from pg. 4

Lt. Jason Carneal said. Carneal said he saw the fire at the home, which is two doors from his residence, as he was leaving for work just before 6 a.m. He said he forced open the door and found Fontaine unconscious near the doorway. In flip-flops, a T-shirt and shorts, he pulled her from the

residence and began resuscitation. “I thought I’d see what I could do to help. It’s what I’m trained to do on a daily basis,” Carneal said. Williams said dispatchers received a call around 5:45 a.m. Four fire engines, two tankers and two ambulances and 25 fire-EMS crew members arrived shortly afterward and had the fire under control in about 45 minutes.

Despite its fall in the American Legion District 11 baseball tournament final, Mechanicsville Post 175 has a lot to be proud of this season, including its third straight regular season title.

Season ends, but plenty remains to celebrate By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Mechanicsville Post 175’s American Legion baseball season began with promise. It ended in frustration. But, despite the fact that Post 175 failed in its bid to represent District 11 in the Virginia state tournament for the third straight season, the team has a lot to celebrate. “Not the way you draw it up, obviously,” said Post 175 coach

Bobby White of the end of the team’s season. But he was far from down on his team after it was swept by West End Post 361 in both games of the District 11 tournament final. “I’m so proud of these guys for the season we’ve had,” White said. “Fifteen and four is a great season. It’s a great record over 19 games. I think that these guys committed themselves 100 percent to the team, put the team before individuals, and

came out every single time we played with the attitude of winning and doing what they could do to help us win.” While Post 175 failed to claim its third straight District 11 tournament championship – and earn its third straight trip to the Virginia state tournament, which is being held at Fireman’s Field in Purcellville this week – the team still won the regular season district championship, itself no small feat.

“The regular season championship is awesome,” White said. “Obviously you want to couple that with the tournament championship, but that wasn’t in the cards for us and that’s OK.” The worst part about falling short in the tournament is that, for all but one of the team’s members, they will not be allowed to return next year because of a rules change that renders returning college freshmen-aged players ineligible.

“I don’t like that rule,” said long-time Post 175 backer Norman Bowles. “I don’t think it’s good for baseball. I don’t think it’s good for American Legion baseball, and I don’t think it’s good for the kids, either. … We’re just going to lose a good quality of baseball.” Only catcher Brady Didlake is eligible to return next year. Among the players who would have been eligible under the current rules, but

who won’t be under the new rules are: Trevor Denton, who had a double and two RBIs in Tuesday night’s 9-6 loss to Post 361 and who hit a grand slam in Wednesday night’s 31-5 loss; Haiden Lamb, who was 4 for 5 with a run scored Tuesday and 2 for 4 with a run scored Wednesday; and Anthony Zona who was 2 for 4 with a run scored Tuesday and 3 for 5 with see PLENTY, pg. 31

End of the Trail for Mechanicsville Post 175 By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch There was no question whether the ball that rocketed off Patrick Hall’s bat would clear the outfield fence. The only call the umpire had to make: Fair or foul? “I think it nicked the foul pole,” Hall said. “Probably three more inches and it would have been foul.” With a clear view down the first-base line, the umpire put his right hand in the air and spun his index finger. It was a fair ball, a home run and a grand slam for Hall. His hit was just one of 16 on Wednesday night for West End Post 361, which defeated Mechanicsville Post 175 13-5 in the American Legion District 11 final at L.C. Bird High School. Post 361 (14-6) will play in the state tournament next week in Purcellville. West End emerged from the losers’ bracket and beat Post 175 (16-4), the two-time defending champion, two days in a row. West End jumped on Mechanicsville early, tacking on two runs in the first and seven more in the second. After Hall’s grand slam, Post 361 suddenly was up 9-0. “They answered the bell early tonight,” West End coach Doug Toombs said. “I never felt like the pressure was on us. The pressure was on 175.” Hall, who pitched eight innings Tuesday and picked up the win, returned Wednesday night playing first base. He went 2 for 4 and had six RBIs. By the time Post 175 returned volley, it was already down 12-0. Trevor Denton hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the score to 12-4. “I didn’t let it bother me,” But West End pitcher Patrick Hulihan said of the grand slam. Hulihan wasn’t fazed. He got “The grand slam almost helped two quick outs and made his me.” way out of the inning. With no runners left on

base, he returned to the windup and focused solely on retiring the batter. Hulihan went seven innings, scattering nine hits. He struck

out six and walked four. He threw one pitch in the eighth inning, his 118th of the night, before Toombs pulled him. Toombs has a practice of letting a pitcher return for one more pitch the next inning so the pitcher can leave to an ovation from his teammates and the crowd. Hulihan deserved the applause. He kept Post 175 off balance most of the night. And he never let Mechanicsville capitalize on its base runners. With the help of his change-up, he induced 12 batters to fly out. West End returns to the state tournament for the first time since 2011. Of those four seasons, the 2014 roster is the least talented, Toombs said. “But this team has the most heart of any team in the four years I’ve been here,” Toombs

added. While last year’s team was loaded with veteran talent, this year’s squad has more youth and less power. So Toombs made an emphasis on manufacturing runs and stealing bases. On Wednesday, the hits never stopped coming. Of its 16 hits, three went for extra bases. All nine batters recorded at least one hit. Will Black scored three runs, and Drew Scott recorded three hits. Next week, when the state tournament begins, the boys from Post 361 will see if that offensive firepower will keep up, and just how far it will get them. Game One Patrick Hall stood at the edge of the dugout, grasping the rail of the fence that separated

him from the field. All he could do was watch and hope West End Post 361 could finish what he started. Post 361’s lead had shrunk from eight runs to three. Evan Swecker rocketed a ball into left field, a three-run homer for Mechanicsville Post 175. The momentum was building. The noise in the Mechanicsville dugout rose a decibel or two. But 361 pitcher Kyle Saltzberg regained his composure and shut down the rally. He forced Jakob Pridemore to hit a lazy pop-up to first base, ending the game and securing Post 361’s 9-6 win in the District 11 playoffs Tuesday at L.C. Bird High School. West End (13-6) got eight solid innings out of Hall, a lefthanded rising senior at Glen Allen High School. His changeup was on, and Post 175’s batters didn’t know what to do with it. “It kept them off balance,” Hall said. It’s a pitch he learned from his father, Norman Hall, who played baseball at Virginia Commonwealth. The change-up worked well his junior season and has continued to improve in the Legion season. With Hall pairing the change-up with a mid-to-lower 80s fastball, Post 175 (16-3) flied out and grounded out inning after inning. Hall struck out only two, but he gave up just one run through eight innings. In the ninth, he began to falter. He walked two, then gave up a double and a single without recording an out. West End coach Doug Toombs pulled him. “Those two walks killed him in the ninth,” Toombs said. “He pitched a heck of a ballgame. He just ran out of gas.”

When Josh Shepherd walked down the third-base line of Liberty University’s baseball diamond last month in a graduation ceremony that followed Hanover High School’s second straight Virginia High School League state baseball championship, an era of sorts had come to an end for the Hawks. For the previous four years Josh and at least one of his siblings had played a key role in Hanover athletics. The first two years of that era featured Josh and his older brother, Roger, who finished his time as a Hawk playing lacrosse. The past two years featured Josh and his sister, Kaylyn. In the two years that Josh and Kaylyn overlapped at Hanover they helped lead their teams to considerable diamond success – Josh in baseball and Kaylyn in softball. Over the years, the two proved a great help to one another. In fact, Kaylyn got her start in softball thanks to Josh and their older brother, Roger, who is two years older than Josh. When she was four, she saw them playing and wanted to join them. Rather than tell her to go away, they found a way for her to join – giving her what they called the “4-year-old special.” “That was just letting her get on base,” Josh said. “We’d let her make contact with the ball and if it came to you, you kicked it. You booted the ball to the left or right and let her run around the bases a little bit.” They had to be careful with their “errors,” however. Kaylyn did not want special treatment. “She would get mad if she knew they were not trying to get her out,” said Kaylyn and Josh’s mother, Colleen Shepherd. “She didn’t like that – that they did

kind of play the game like they weren’t trying. … She was definitely a strong-willed girl.” The special treatment did not need to last for long. “Two or three years later, she was hitting the ball just like the guys we were playing with in the back yard,” Josh said. When weather failed to cooperate, the children practiced in the house. “They would play in the hallway – play catch,” Coleen Shepherd said. “We actually did grounders in the hallway on rainy days when they couldn’t get outside.” They played a lot of games – baseball, kickball, football, wiffle ball – but for Kaylyn, when the then 12-year-old Josh began playing travel baseball, she caught a bug for softball. “I watched him play a lot of his tournaments,” Kaylyn said. “That’s when I started playing travel ball and got into more

competitive softball.” Pursuing baseball and softball seemed a natural path for both Josh and Kaylyn. Their mother, a former varsity softball player at Varina, coaches middle school softball. Their father, Roger Shepherd, played baseball at Varina and coached Josh in Little League. Coleen’s father, Don Wade, was a longtime baseball and basketball coach at Fairfield and Highland Springs. To the extent that Josh and Kaylyn competed against one another, it was mild. Mostly they supported – celebrated – each other. “If there was a competition, she’d have had me in the batting average the past few years,” Josh said. “We never really tried to compete against each other. We honestly tried to help each other out.” see SHEPHERDS, pg. 31

GRAL teams gear up for Champs By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com The Greater Richmond Aquatic League will hold its Champs meet this weekend, and the event promises to be historic. This year will mark the first that all Hanover County swim teams will compete for the GRAL title as Burkwood Swim and Racquet Club joins the GRAL fold for the first time. Burkwood’s swimmers had competed in the past in the James River Aquatic Club. (It’s

When Hall exited the game, Post 361 led 9-3. Just a few seconds later, that lead was shred to 9-6 on Swecker’s three-run homer. “I was a little worried,” Hall said. But Saltzberg got two quick outs, a groundout and a strikeout. Haiden Lamb hit a double down the left-field line to give Post 175 one last hope. But Pridemore’s pop out to first ended the ninth-inning rally. “They battled to the last out,” Toombs said of Post 175. “They’re a lot like us.”

divers still compete in JRAC as GRAL does not currently have diving competitions.) “I feel really good,” said head Burkwood coach Karen Seeber. “It was kind of a change. Some of our kids who would have made it into [JRAC] Champs last year didn’t [make it into GRAL Champs this year], so the times are a little faster than they were in JRAC.” Seeber said she will be missing a few swimmers whose parents planned vacations around the former JRAC calendar. Pebble Creek coach Stuart Just a few weeks ago, Post 361 scored seven runs with two outs in the ninth inning to beat Post 137. Monday night, Post 361 rallied in the eighth inning to claim victory. “I keep preaching to them to get an early start,” Toombs said. “But it hasn’t happened.” On Tuesday night, Post 361 managed only one hit in the first four innings. In the final five innings, it exploded for eight. Hall hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Post 361 piled on five more runs to take a 6-0 lead. Kyle Battle hit a two-run double, and Hall hit an RBI single and later scored.

Bernstein expects his team to finish in the middle of the pack, and some West End teams like Canterbury to be dominant as in the past, but that Burkwood – one of the historically stronger teams in JRAC – will mount a strong challenge. “I’m looking for Burkwood to do well,” Bernstein said. “I think it’s just going to throw in another adversary for those big teams in the West End who’ve been winning for years. … It’s going to bring in better competition and make it a stronger championship meet.”

The Mechanicsville 10-11 All-Stars won the Virginia state baseball championship with an 11-5 victory over Upper Loudon in Woodstock on July 15. They shared constructive criticism – and observed each other practicing at home. “We’ve got a hitting net in the garage,” Josh Shepherd said. “We’re always out there working on things. grandparents stationed themselves between the Hawks’ two diamonds, some keeping an eye on baseball, others on softball – both teams of relatives ready to call attention to the other team when Josh or Kaylyn made a big play or stepped up to bat. With Josh heading off to college and Kaylyn with two more years at Hanover, the family will still have to divide their time between watching Kaylyn at Hanover, and watching 10-year-old brother Wade playing Little League and travel baseball, but at least they will not need to run back-and-forth between diamonds at Hanover so much. But Josh and Kaylyn will not have their primary live-in critics anymore. The change may

be hardest on Kaylyn. “It will be different not having that direct influence,” Coleen said. “She and her friend Erin [Acors] have told me that they would look over to the baseball field and see how hard those young men would work together, and they would push themselves to work just as hard or come back and spend an extra hour practicing. “I think it will be different not having that direct influence [of Josh], but I think that she’s seen how hard he worked in the classroom and how hard he worked in the field. I know she is goal-oriented and want to try to play Division I [softball], so I think she’s going to try to keep that same push. But she’ll have to work a little more internally.”

son,” Swecker said. “You couldn’t ask for a better group of guys or a better coaching staff. It’s unfortunate it has to end here, but I had a blast. … I wouldn’t have it any other way with any other guys.” Swecker would love to keep playing baseball. Now that his Legion career is over, though, it may not be an option. “Just thinking this could

be my last game ever is hard,” Swecker said. “We’ll see where the road takes me. It’s definitely scary. I mean, it’s the ninth inning and I’m running out there thinking it might be the last time I ever touch the dirt, the last time I see an at-bat, the last time I put a jersey on. It’s hard. I hate it. Baseball’s ... pretty much what I live for, and it’s hard to see it go.”
