What difference can one person make?
From the editor
Don’t take for granted people who matter Last week, a friend had to go say goodbye to someone for the final time. He wasn’t looking forward to that drive to the hospital, but he knew it was a visit he had to make. Sadly, the person he went to see passed away the next day. He felt a sense of relief in that, despite the day-to-day events that occupy our time, he was able to spend those last moments with his friend. He called en route to the hospital, with mixed emotions of knowing he wanted to say goodbye and yet how difficult it would be to face that last encounter. Afterwards, despite the sadness at the reality of what was soon to be his friend’s final hours, he was glad he made that trip. Not wanting to appear maudlin but we all take for granted when we leave home or hang up a telephone that we’ll see and/or talk to that person again. There are no guarantees. So, how often do you think that when you leave home for work or go shopping that it could be the last time you spend with a loved one? No, it isn’t a thought we want to carry with us, but we must be aware of how important it is to share our feelings with those who matter. This writer was in her mid-30s when she left her hometown for a job opportunity. That was when it became important to tell family and friends how I felt. The routine of expressing those emotions takes place with every visit or phone conversation. That dedication to telling those I love that before ending a visit or conversation remains steadfast. Having experienced losses of family members, including my father and sister, I am diligent in saying “I love you” to the people who do mean that much to me. I don’t take it lightly — and those who are told those words know they are sincere and heartfelt. What that friend went through last week weighed on me because I know he was hurting. He’s one of those people in my life who matters — and he knows it. Whether it’s a family member or a friend, let them know how you feel. You never know when it may be the last chance you’ll get to express yourself in a way that will be long remembered. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist The idea of grassroots efforts can seem like an overwhelming task when one considers the odds when the individual takes on a larger entity. When a YMCA announces a closing, it gets a community’s attention, so it was no surprise that members and neighboring residents did not react well to a recent announcement that the Atlee Station YMCA would be closing its doors, effective in October. The communication between residents and the YMCA was less than ideal, and some members said they were caught unaware the facility was in financial trouble.
But, facts don’t lie and the branch said it is suffering reported losses to the tune of $300,000 a year operating the Rutland location. It also has been reported that YMCA officials did not follow traditional protocol when considering the Rutland location. A branch opening is usually preceded by a community demand, an adequate number of potential memberships and other market evaluations. In this case, the YMCA opened and then sought the community support it needed. And, make no mistake, the community does support this YMCA, and no one contacted for my research had
a bad word to say about the facility. Conversely, they’ve expressed a real grassroots desire to save their YMCA from the impending closing, that up to now seemed like a done deal. They expressed displeasure with the lack of communication with YMCA officials and an obvious lack of input on the closing. But, that’s not their focus. This group is focused on moving forward, not dwelling on past mistakes or what could have been. The one remaining issue is how STAY, Save the Atlee Y, can reverse a decision to close the local facility. And what once seemed like a foresee DIFFERENCE, pg. 8

Transportation needed for county’s seniors A friend of mine just told me about a letter from a reader you posted some months ago concerning transportation provided in Richmond for our senior citizens called Caravan. To me, it is a shame we don’t have such a system here in Hanover County for us seniors. I feel it is very important to have such a method of transportation to ensure that all our senior citizens have a guaranteed access to mobility to meet their daily basic needs. Unfortunately today many of our seniors have no family or friends to count on for transportation or are unable to get around physically. If you feel as I do, let us contact our Hanover County Board of Supervisors to get the ball rolling. Richard W. Firth Mechanicsville
Surprised about plan for neighborhood market I must say that I was quite surprised when I first read that the Hanover County Board of Supervisors was considering a “Walmart-like neighborhood market” and claimed they did not know who the retailer was who was interested
in the property on Sliding Hill Road. No one enters into any type of potential business relationship without knowing who all of the players are. My immediate response was that it was going to be a Walmart, followed by wondering why anyone would think the identified area on Sliding Hill Road was a good idea. For the life of me, I cannot see the need for a “Walmartlike neighborhood market.” I currently live within 5.85 miles of the Ashland Walmart, 7.5 miles from the Walmart on Brook Road and 12 miles from the Walmart in Mechanicsville. That is more than enough Walmarts to choose from. I am 4.24 miles from Target and Martin’s at Virginia Center Commons, 2.3 miles from a Food Lion and less see LETTERS, pg. 8

than 2 miles from the other Food Lion and less than 5 miles from Kroger. There are numerous fuel sites and pharmacies in between, so clearly there is not a need for this development. It does not appear that anyone on the board of supervisors considered doing any kind of community assessment before making such a drastic decision. I had hoped that our board of supervisors would carefully consider many of the factors that this type of business development would have on our community and that before

Keeping the Atlee Station YMCA open is a noble goal, and the community involvement that prompted the Y to take a second look is admirable. It’s also reassuring to know the voice of the public is sometimes heard. The YMCA certainly has a right to exercise a lease option and make a business decision, but the process behind the decision may need some review. The agency signed a fiveyear lease with a three-year opt-
out with HHHunt when the facility opened. One resident summed up best when he questioned the Y’s desire to stick it out. “Why would they have a three-year option if they planned to stay?” That might be an over-simplification, but better planning and more aggressive membership efforts could have made a difference. Even with the Y’s future in a back against the wall situation, residents believe Y officials
misjudged just how much community support exists in the community for the branch. Maybe the community support they were seeking is indeed present. Perhaps, they just didn’t look hard enough. As the process moves forward, all three parties deserve recognition for their efforts to seek solutions, a position that clearly reflects the character of a community, and a desire to provide the best services for the citizens they serve.
reaching such a decision they would have several meetings for public input. Instead, there was only one meeting for public input, but perhaps that was because it was already a done deal. The board of supervisors did not take into consideration the increased traffic, increased crime since this is easy access to Interstate 95 and the decline in property values. Traffic is already extremely congested and even though the board says Sliding Hill Road will be enlarged, it will not be able to handle all of the traffic on this corridor. Many of the citizens, who live in Kings Charter, AshCreek, Milestone and Rutland, as well
as other neighborhoods in the area, are not in support of this development. These are middle class neighborhoods that do not want a Walmart. People have moved to Hanover County for its rural character and the quality of life that it afforded them. They did not want everything in their backyard; if so, they would have moved elsewhere. This is not the Hanover County that we want. It seems that our board of supervisors has been drinking the same Kool-Aid as our elected officials that we sent to Washington, D.C. Instead of listening to the will of the people that they are supposed to represent, they just go along with what brings in revenue whether it is good for the citizenry or not. Apparently, the board of supervisors needs to hear a strong message from the citizens of their districts, just like in the June 10 primary. The next election for supervisors isn’t that far away. Please be aware of the ongoing meritorious service that Del. Chris Peace, R- 97, provides for his constituents and community. He is a true representative of the people in his endeavors to look out for their best interests — both short- and long-term. His efforts to be accessible to those he represents through a variety of communication options is commendable. He is quick to respond to questions and concerns submitted to his office. Chris is an ardent defender of children and the families providing support for those who are not able to stand up for themselves. I am most grateful for Del. Peace and his desire to be a public servant who is willing to “go against the flow” of liberal politics and policies that are detrimental to our community, state and country. His model could be of great benefit to those who represent us in Washington, D.C.! John McChesney Mechanicsville

Lee-Davis Class of 1969 reunion slated Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
Photo submitted by Christina Waldo
Christina Waldo recently got her hair cut at Laura D’s Hair & Day Spa by Sara Howell for a hair donation to Children with Hair Loss (CWHL) www.childrenwithhairloss.us. She said that is the only hair donation organization that accepts chemically treated hair (in good condition), gray hair and a minimum of eight inches. “I had been under the impression for a long time that you could not donate treated or gray hair, and that it had to at least 10 inches,” she said. “I don’t know many adults that donate their hair for these reasons.” Waldo also said that she is “hopeful that if more know about CWHL minimum requirements maybe more would consider a hair donation.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) agricultural marketing service (AMS) administrator Anne Alonzo recently announced that USDA’s National Farmers Market Directory now lists 8,268 markets, an increase of 76 percent since 2008. The data reflects continued demand and growth of farmers markets in every region of the country. Alonzo also announced that AMS is developing three new local food directories that will expand USDA’s support for
local and regional foods by providing easy access to the most current information about the local food market. Alonzo made the announcements at the Dane County Farmers Market in Madison, Wisconsin, the country’s largest producer-only market, where she kicked off the 15th annual “National Farmers Market Week”, which was observed Aug. 3-9. “The National Farmers Market Directory numbers reflect the continued importance of farmers markets to American agriculture. The new deadline gives livestock, honeybee and farmraised fish producers who experienced losses because of disease, adverse weather, wildfires or colony collapse disorder between Oct. 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2013, an additional two weeks to enroll in ELAP. Preschool children take part in getting healthy series to combat childhood obesity while providing children with a positive, educational and fun introduction to the world of running. Every child received a medal and trophies were awarded to boys and girls who had the highest total points in each age group. Organizer Mark Sargent, a wellness coach at Health Link Family Chiropractic in Mechanicsville, said, “It was amazing to see these kids improve each week and work so hard. Many had never done anything like this before. We ended the series with a parent’s one-mile race to lead our children participants by example. They loved cheering on their
moms and dads.” Sargent said he plans to continue organizing the series every spring and fall. The next series starts Sept. 2 and registration opened on June 15 for the event at www.
HealthyKidsRunningSeries.org. He said they hope to have 150 kids at this series and the new location will be at Pole Green Park. Registration is $30 for all 5 races or $10/race.
Registration includes a race bag and t-shirt. For more information about HKRS or in sponsoring or volunteering at the fall event, contact Sargent at 804559-6818.

In addition to USDA’s National Farmers Market Directory, AMS is adding: USDA’s National Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) Enterprise Directory — A CSA is a farm or network/association of multiple farms that offer consumers regular deliveries of locallygrown farm products during one or more harvest season(s) on a subscription or membership basis. USDA’s National Food Hub Directory — A Food Hub is a business or organization that actively manages the aggregation, distribution, and marketing of source-identified food products to multiple buyers from multiple producers, primarily
local and regional producers, to strengthen the ability of these producers to satisfy local and regional wholesale, retail, and institutional demand. USDA’s National On-Farm Market Directory — An OnFarm Market is a farm market managed by a single farm operator that sells agricultural and/or horticultural products directly to consumers from a location on their farm property or on property adjacent to that farm. USDA invites local food business owners who fall within these categories to list their operational details in the new directories www.usdalocalfooddirectories.com. Local student climbs path to national team By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com For many kids, climbing is a way to profitably spend energy scaring their parents by securing precarious positions as far as possible above the ground. For 11-year-old Zachary Blue, it is a sport — and he is one of the best in the nation at it. Zachary, a student at Oak Knoll Middle School, went to the 2014 Sport Climbing Series Youth National Championships at Stone Summit Climbing and Fitness Center in Atlanta in July and earned a spot on the U.S. indoor youth rock climbing team. For Zachary, making the national team is the culmination of years of unrestrained effort in scaling heights. “He started climbing the house, playgrounds — literally, he figured out how to shimmy up his door frame and hang from the door frame — just pretty much everywhere,” said his mother, Alyssa Blue. His climbing efforts grew more focused three years ago after a supervised climbing experience at a state park in Virginia. “Everybody rock climbed, and thought, ‘Ooh, yeah, this is fun,’ ” Alyssa Blue said. “One of the guides said, ‘You know, he has kind of a knack for this, you might want to look into [com-

in Midlothian. Zachary’s father learned to belay so he could take Zachary there. “He would climb and people would say, ‘How did he do that?’ ” Alyssa Blue said. “He just as that kind of instinct.” It was not long before one
of Peak Experience’s coaches invited Zachary to join its team. Zachary did — on his ninth birthday. While Zachary had an impressive instinct for diving, he needed to learn to develop techniques to become a more
skilled and efficient climber. A year ago, he began working with coach Austin Boze, a VCU student and former national indoor rock climbing champion. “I had heard of him before I had even met him and knew
he was a talented climber,” Boze said. “When I first got the chance to see him, I saw that he was really strong for his age, but, as was the case then, he had a lot of things to develop technically. … He’s come a long way.” Zachary goes to practice on Peak Experience’s up to 50-foot walls several times a week. But the drive to Midlothian is often very time consuming, so the family converted the garage into a climbing room. Two walls, the ceiling and a column are fitted with plywood on which a variety of holds can be installed along any number of possible routes. The floor is covered with thick padding. When Zachary is at “work,” he scrambles up, down and across as if his real name was Peter Parker — a/k/a SpiderMan. In competitions, climbers scale pre-set routes that increase in difficulty with each successive round in the tournament. An ideal route is one in which no climber, or at most one climber, reaches the top. Winners are usually judged by how far up a particular route they get, not by how fast they get there. Climbing comes in two basic styles: bouldering, in which climbers work shorter routes, but do so without ropes; and sport climbing, in which harnessed climbers work taller see CLIMBS, pg. 33 !
High school golf teams have room for growth By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com The first day of school may be a few weeks away, but the area’s high school golf teams are back in action. Atlee, Hanover, Lee-Davis, Patrick Henry and King William met last week for tryouts and practice King William even had a match Wednesday on the Eastern Shore — and all four Hanover County teams begin their season with matches this week. Of the five teams, only Atlee finds itself well supplied with experience. The other four teams have a few seasoned golfers to anchor the team, but will need some of their junior golfers to step up to enable them to compete with the strongest teams in the region. Atlee As was the case last year, the Raiders are arguably the strongest team in Hanover County. Once Garrett Palmer returns from U.S. Army boot camp at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, this month, Atlee will have six seniors on its squad. The Raiders main losses to graduation were Philip Sening and Chris Perkins, who played in their top six last year. This year, seniors Levi Brizendine, Matthew Sweeney and sophomore Erica Whitehouse will occupy the top three spots. Palmer and fellow seniors Stephen Hurd, Arianna Martin, Jay Feyerabend and Sam Vehorn will round out the

It’s just a matter of putting it all together.” Senior Matt Alexander will probably play in the No. 2 spot behind Wilkinson. Others likely to challenge for spots among the Hawks’ top six include Jimmy Hill, Cole Hodges, Robert Martin, Bella Seip and Rebecca
Making the national team is just the start of what Zachary hopes to be a long future as a climber, maybe something that he can do in college (a few colleges and universities field climbing teams) or on a bigger stage — sport climbing was
considered, but failed to gain sufficient support, for a berth in the 2020 Sochi Olympics. No matter what happens on the national and international stage, Zachary finds plenty in climbing to keep him interested and participating for a long time.

Lee-Davis The Confederates lost their main player, Austin Diehr, to graduation. Seniors Josh Nuckols and Andrew Naumann should be the most experienced members of Lee-Davis’ top six. Underclassmen Gabriel Nuñez and Jared Cabanban will likely fill the remaining spots among the Confederates’ top four. After that, however, LeeDavis golf coach Kenny Lewis is faced with a lot of question marks. “There’s kids that I have not seen a lot of,” Lewis said. “My hope is that they can shave some strokes off their game and produce some competitive scores. … If [the top four] can come in and then shoot even par to three or four over consistently in our matches, and maybe some of these other kids throw in a hot round, I think we can be competitive.” Patrick Henry Patrick Henry lost three see GOLF, pg. 34 "
“It’s like a puzzle on the wall. You have to figure out where to put your hands and feet,” Zachary said. “But it’s also a workout at the same time. So it’s a mental and physical challenge. It’s good for your body and fun to do.”

Mechanicsville closes out tourney run with win By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Despite getting off to a rough start in the first two days of the Tournament of State Champions in Greenville, North Carolina, Mechanicsville Little League’s 10-11 All-Stars ended their season on a winning note. The Virginia state champions, led by Nate Kagey’s grand slam, scored 10 runs in the second inning en route to a 13-1 victory over Alabama’s state champions, ChoctawWashington Little League, in the final day of pool play last Monday. NikolasTalleyheldChoctawWashington to just two hits to earn a complete-game victory. Mechanicsville manager
Brian Colgin said the team was “a little disappointed” after the first two losses, but disappointment did not affect the players in their final game. “We’ve always had a positive attitude,” Brian Colgin said. “There was no guarantee that we were completely out of it. So we just had to go out there and play our game and hope for the best as far as other teams winning or losing. … It looked like they had more drive and initiative to win knowing that they had to.” Mechanicsville opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Cayden Richardson started the game with a single. Two outs later, Jordan Watkins doubled Richardson in and scored what proved the winning run on a

Brett Allen opened with a single and scored on a single by C.J. Tinsley. Coleton Payne and Aiden Langford drew backto-back walks to load the bases. Garrett Kirby was hit by a pitch to bring Tinsley home. Payne scored on Caden Plummer’s single and Langford scored on Jordan Watkins’ mishandled fly ball to right field. Kirby then came home on Talley’s sacrifice fly to right field. Daniel Colgin walked to reload the bases and set the stage for Kagey’s base-clearing

CORRECTION The print version of last week’s story, “GRAL swimmers smash records in meet,” incorrectly used sports editor Dave Lawrence’s byline instead of freelance correspondent Danny Polk’s byline. In the same story, Sonora Baker was wrongly identified as a member of the 15-18 age group. Baker actually swam in the 13-14 age group.
