Supervisor: appointment for HCSB seat will not be easy By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local
Un-Cookoff invites aspiring eaters and chefs On July 11, Hanover County Parks and Recreation will host the Tomato UnCookoff. Competitors will uncook off head-to-head to transform the famous Hanover Tomato into tantalizing tomato recipes. All underground chefs (supper club, private/caterer and competition chefs) and above-ground chefs are welcome to compete. Suggestions for dishes could include: salsa, bruschetta, tabbouleh, caprese salad, tomato sauces or perhaps a delicious stuffed tomato. see UN-COOKOFF, pg. 4
When nominations are received on May 14 for an appointment to the Mechanicsville seat on the Hanover County School Board, supervisor Canova Peterson said he knows it won’t be an easy choice. It’s Peterson’s first chance to select a School Board member from his district, but he’s well acquainted with the current member and the job he’s done.

The Local Pick:
ichard and Kathy Verlander, the parents of pitching ace Justin Verlander, recently spoke to aspiring athletes and their parents during a visit to Hanover High School. The Goochland residents shared their personal experiences as the parents of two sons that are living their dream as successful sports figures. Last year, Justin signed a $180 million deal with the Detroit Tigers that was the richest ever for a pitcher. Their youngest son Ben also has taken the path as a professional athlete. Ben was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 14th round of the 2013 Draft out of Old Dominion University, where he majored in communications and minored in sports management. The Verlanders spend much of their free time offering words of encouragement to potential athletes and their parents. They share their experiences in a book called “Rocks Across the Pond.” The book emphasizes the importance of mentors and role models in a child’s life. Their visit to Hanover High enabled the intimate crowd to hear the trial and error of parenting and how they strive to inspire people of all ages to “live their dream.” The crowd listened intently as Richard explained the progression of how his sons have worked hard to
become successful. He gave credit to a specific teacher and a coach during the presentation. Justin’s second grade teacher, Marion Kramer, worked with young Justin to encourage him to develop more focus. Bob Smith, a coach, later worked with Justin as a teen to continue to help him attain better focus. Richard gives credit to Kramer and Smith for believing in his son. “They knew he could do it and now he has the reputation for being at his best when a game is on the line. He is super focused,” Verlander said. As Richard shared these stories with the Hanover County attendees, his message was clear: He wanted to convey that, although people may Photo submitted by Linda M. OPINION | The Local Views
It can be the little things — or not
From the editor
We always answer the call when help is needed When tragedy strikes — whether on a local, national or global level — Americans rise to the occasion and provide help and support. We often watch in terror at the events transpiring in today’s society and yet there is a strength that emerges and often sends our family, friends and neighbors to locations miles from home. Today’s technology provides an immediate source for us to learn about the events making news. And when horrific incidents occur, our citizens and military respond. The sympathy and compassion we offer speaks volumes about the kind of people we are and, most of all, the values our parents instilled in us. Whatever the circumstances may be, our common goal is to bring comfort and aid. These are the times when one can stand proud as an American. Political shenanigans and maneuverings take a back seat — as they should — in times of crisis. It’s not about political parties or lobbying for whatever cause. We’ve all heard the phrase “United we stand, divided we fall.” Truer words have never been spoken. Watching images cross the TV screen of so many incidents and the role we as a nation play in bringing our resources to those in need unite us. How we respond to the needs in our own communities also speaks to who we are in times of despair. Our food pantries always need additional supplies. Keep in mind the children who may not have a regular meal schedule when school is not in session. We are fortunate to have dedicated volunteers serving the needs of others right here in Hanover County. We’re all guilty of getting caught up in the day-to-day “routine” of life, but how much time or thought do we give to those who have needs we may never have known? My father was a child of the Depression and his family was poor. He impacted many lives in his 63 years on this earth, but one of the greatest gifts he left was the establishment of a food pantry that feeds thousands every year. There are countless people we encounter who humbly give every day. To them, thank you doesn’t seem adequate — but it is sincere. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist About two weeks ago, I began an informal survey among friends as to what irritates them the most in their everyday lives. It was, admittedly, a cheap way to gather information for a column, but I was truly interested in what perturbs people most in a world where little things constantly annoy me. Some of the answers were surprising and enlightened me on annoying acts I would never thought of, while others were familiar pet peeves of mine. Most of the responses required thought — not to recall something that got their goat, but prioritizing a list of numerous things that irritate people was the real challenge. My first respondent was ready with his answer in a second and almost seemed like he had been waiting for a chance to vent his frustration at a certain group of drivers.
“I can’t stand people who are making a left turn, but swing their car to the right just before making the turn. What’s the deal with that?” he said. I told him that one would take more explanation for me to understand the problem and commiserate with his problem. I’m not sure that one is going to rate high on what’s on America’s mind when it comes to annoying situations, but I ask the question. While waiting in line at the grocery store, I started up a conversation with a lady in front of me and told her of my survey. She also was ready with an answer, but I think her immediate location may have influenced her selection. “I hate when another checker opens up and they don’t take the next person in line,” she said. Now, there’s a legitimate beef we can all get behind, and, yes, you violators, take notice there are people
watching you. Besides, don’t you believe in karma? While ordering dinner at a local restaurant, a companion said her pet peeve was too little ice in a drink. Again, a qualified concern, but I have to confess that in my years as a bartender I often got the complaint of too much ice in a drink, so that’s a flexible peeve. And finally, there was the little lady who works behind the deli at a local grocery store, who always gives my kids a slice of deli meat every time she sees them. She always has an insightful view on most subjects and would be described by my mother as one who doesn’t complain. Her two-word answer brought my survey to a perspective I’d neglected to consider, but her simple answer provided the most appropriate of answers: “Mean people.” Winner!!!

Brat-Cantor race addressed I write this letter to put the word out of an important election: the Republican Primary on June 10. Dr. David Brat, who is a professor of ethics and economics at RandolphMacon College, is running for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives’ 7th District seat. His opponent, of course, is incumbent House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Dr. Brat is running the first serious challenge to Eric Cantor’s spot since he first got elected (2000) and there is a real chance here in June to knock the Majority Leader out of Washington, D.C. That would send a big message of Washington. I am 17 and possibly 18 by the time you read this, depending on when this is published, but on June 10 I am
going to submit my first vote for a change in the direction of government in Washington, D.C. I want my vote to send a message to Washington that incumbents are vulnerable because “We the People” run the government and the representatives work for us. I believe Eric Cantor has lost touch with the people of the 7th District and is consumed with power in Washington. He has been our representative for nearly 14 years now and if he wins the primary election he will likely serve another 14 years. June 10 is our chance to send the message to Washington that we are tired of D.C. politics. I also want to encourage more moderates and conservative-leaning Democrats (like those Reagan Democrats) to go out to the polls in June in support of David Brat. We can do this. My last point in this letter is that I want to encourage people to call out on Eric Cantor to face Dr. Brat in a

debate — at least one debate. Dr. Brat has already challenged Eric Cantor to a debate, but — in a stubborn move — Eric Cantor has refused to accept. This is absurd and a low move for the Majority Leader to not accept to debate. I really find it hard to believe that Eric Cantor thinks Dr. Brat is no serious challenger but I beg to differ, especially when David Brat has been getting national media attention. Again, I urge you, the people, to call on Eric Cantor to come down to the 7th District to debate David Brat. I don’t think that’s asking too much of Eric Cantor. I encourage those who read my letter to go to Dave Brat’s website, http://davebratforcongress.com/, and get more information on him. It’s time we change some seats in Washington and the time to do it is now and starting on June 10. Thank you for reading and God bless America. Dalton Luffey Mechanicsville.
Pleasant surprise
it is free.
I attended a Concert in the Park Friday evening in Pole Green Park. What apleasant surprise. It was free and the music was very good. In speaking with the Wade Foundation, I learned there will be four more concerts: May 9 with Prospect7, Docs of Rock and the Chris Adams Band. June 20 with Pat McGee, Pat Russell Band and Prospect 7. July 7 with Elliott Yamin, Prospect7 and McBeth. Aug. 15 with Samson Trinh & the Upper East Side Band, Happy Hill Gang and SPARC. This evening the winner of the 2014 Ford Escape will be announced. Good to see fine family entertainment in Mechanicsville. If you go see one you will want to see them all. So pack up the kids, bring your lawn chairs and have an evening in the park ... and did I mention

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Q. Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Raven, 356774, left, is a 3year-old female Siberian husky. She has had her first set of vaccines and is heartworm test negative. Raven is a mild mannered little dog who is still a little shy. She has become much more friendly since she has been in the shelter. She will need some TLC (tender loving care), but shelter officials said they believe she will be a very good dog. She gets along well with other dogs as well. Tommy, 357123, right, is a 4-year-old male hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is heartworm test negative. Tommy is a very playful, energetic guy. He loves to run and play with his other dog friends in the shelter. He has a very sweet disposition and enjoys being petted. He would be a good dog for any experience level. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. Traffic advisory issued by HCSO for NASCAR race Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office anticipates traffic congestion in the Mechanicsville area during the NASCAR races to be held this week at the Richmond International Raceway in Henrico County. Lt. Chris R. Whitley, speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, said citizens are encouraged to plan in advance to avoid traffic congestion that will be caused by this event. On Friday, April 25, the NASCAR Nationwide Series 250 race will be held at 7 p.m.,
which will affect the afternoon rush hour commute. On Saturday, April 26, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 400 race will start at 7 p.m. Traffic will be congested on Meadowbridge Road all day, with the most congestion occurring mid-morning and late evening (before and after the race). For citizens traveling on I-295, the Route 301 (Chamberlayne Road) or the Route 360 (Mechanicsville Turnpike) exits are recommended as alternatives to the Meadowbridge Road exit. In addition, citizens are
encouraged to avoid Atlee Road, especially on Saturday, and utilize Shady Grove Road as an alternative. On both days, deputies will monitor Meadowbridge Road closely and assist with traffic direction when needed. On Saturday, deputies will be stationed at each intersection on Meadowbridge Road to monitor traffic flow and render assistance to motorists in need. Whitley said it is the goal of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office to facilitate the safe flow of traffic for this special event in such a way that causes minimal inconvenience to our citizens.

She has appeared on TV, having been featured on Fox & Friends, Neil Cavuto, Greta Van Susteren’s On The Record and WUSA9, as well several other news and radio programs. Items that will not be accepted are: Intra-venous solutions, injectables and needles. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. dental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines — flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash — pose potential safety and health hazards. Serial killers don’t look like the glassy-eyed lunatics depicted in slasher films. Their ability to appear to be “the boy next door” is part of the secret of their success. Yet serial killers share at least two characteristics that, in combination, make them into killing machines: They have an excessive need for power and lack any sense of conscience or human warmth. He is given human form to woo and marry her on the condition that she remains true to him. Barbara gives birth to a witch child whom the townspeople destroy in a superstitious frenzy. Then, during a climactic religious revival Barbara is led

Hanover County School Board members heard comments from several familiar faces at the April 8 regular meeting. Clint Robertson returned with his recommendation that the school system switch to a 10-point grading system. “As a parent, I can’t tell how frustrating it is for my children to miss one question on a quiz and get a B or two questions and get a C,” he said. Robertson said he would be happy to assist board members in their future considerations of a new grading system, even

Hanover County School Board members Bob Hundley, left, and John Axselle got a lesson in interactive lesson planning from Hanover County school librarians during the Instructional Minute portion of the April 8 meeting.
He noted torn seats in the facility, and said few changes have been made since the 1990s. A renovation project is scheduled for 2017, but Robertson said that’s not soon enough. “PH is 55 years old and needs some serious updating,” he said.” Please consider moving those funds up to the summer of 2014.” Afreen Goattee, president of the Hanover Education Foundation, thanked the board for this year’s budget that included raises for all teachers, but said state funding might allow a more substantial increase. “If the GA [General Assembly] comes back from their special session and adds a 2 percent increase in their budget for all school employees, I ask that you add that to the amount you are giving us to yield a 4 percent increase,” Goatee said. In other matters, nominations for the Mechanicsville District School Board seat currently held by Glenn Millican
will be accepted by the Board of Supervisors at their May 14 meeting. While the supervisor [Canova Peterson] from that district makes the ultimate decision, he is limited to select a candidate from the list of nominees provided by the public. The board recognized winners from this year’s Metro Richmond STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) competition and also honored DECA State Competition winners. In an instructional moment, board members received a first-hand look at how students access information at county libraries, complete with an interactive demonstration. Librarians from county schools walked the members through a demonstration that displayed just how much information is available via the computer. The board approved a Special Education application for federal funds and also OK’d revisions to School Board policy regarding employee leave.

‘Slating’ issue addressed at local TEA Party meeting Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com The recent use of “slating” at the Republican Mass Meetings in Virginia Beach and a couple other areas was discussed at the April 4 meeting of the Mechanicsville TEA Party met at the Ashcake Volunteer Rescue Squad in Mechanicsville. According to the local group, slating is a seldom used parliamentarian procedure that selects a few hand-picked individuals to cast the votes for an entire group. Virginia Beach has 552 votes at the upcoming convention and the mass meeting was held to select the delegates. Normally what happens is 552 delegates are selected at the mass meeting and they are allowed to cast their votes for the candidate of their choice. More often than not, the locality has more delegate slots than they do applicants, which was the case in Hanover County. Here, everyone that properly applied was selected and the mass meeting was cancelled.
The first speaker was Virginia Beach resident and Hampton Roads TEA Party chairperson Waverly Woods. She said she “raised the red flag” to the TEA Party and conservatives in Virginia Beach that there were those in the Republican Party that were planning to “slate” the delegates. She also said that her warnings were unheeded because the conservatives wanted to “play nice”. At the end of the meeting, all 552 votes ended up in the authority of 32 individuals. Woods said the purpose of slating was to prevent a large group of Democrats from “hijacking” a Republican mass meeting. “But,” Woods said, “it was never intended to be used against our own people.” She also said several improper actions occurred at the meeting. “Robert’s Rules of Order were not followed,” she said. As a result, the entire meeting and the slating that occurred are being appealed. Woods predicted that the final outcome will be that the delegates will be allowed to attend the conven-
tion. She said the final decision will come down to the Republican State Central Committee, and the conservatives have the majority of seats in that body. Woods also said she learned that factions within the Republican Party were planning to slate the Henrico delegation, prompting her and others to mobilize the grassroots. By the time the meeting started, there were several hundred Henrico County residents inside the standing room only Board of Supervisor’s meeting room at the Henrico Government Complex. Woods was joined by a number of Hanover County residents who explained the term “slating” to people as they arrived and handed out flyers explaining the procedure. Anita and Mark Hile of the Henrico TEA Party spoke on the events of the Henrico mass meeting and the attempt to slate the Henrico delegates. They said that the temporary chairman, Donald Boswell, had intended to conduct the
meeting and be elected chairman. Anita Hile said she gave details on the planning session and “practice” meeting in the home of a local resident to stop the slating efforts and allow all of the delegates to attend the convention and vote. “We practiced the parliamentarian procedures, including nomination Russ Moulton as chairman, seconding the nomination and calling for the vote,” Anita Hile said. Mark Hile added, “The entire group of officers, the replacement members of the nominating committee and every position was worked out in advance so the process would move smoothly.” After demanding a count of hands when Boswell was the only candidate nominated in a voice vote, Mark Hile said he nominated Russ Moulton and, as practiced, received a second and the nomination was put to the vote. When all the hands were counted, Moulton was the The nominating committee’s chairman and he replaced the report recommended that all nominating committee and of the delegates that had propother offices in minutes. erly applied be accepted as del-

Five properties — three of which are associated with the Fox family, early settlers of the county — will be open to the public for this special event. Roseville Plantation: Built in 1807 by John Fox, Roseville Plantation and its original five out-buildings gives visitors a glimpse of early agricultural life in Virginia. The 100-year-old red cedars lining the drive lead to the white frame home while apple, cherry and pear trees punctuate the yard and gardens. Surrounding the
house are the horse barn, summer kitchen, granary, chicken houses, smokehouse, privy and school house. The owners have restored many of the out-buildings and furnished them in a manner representative of their original use. Lee-Davis wins one, drops one at Freeman By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch
During a span of six days, the Lee-Davis baseball team has faced a future University of Virginia pitcher twice. On April 10, it was Hanover senior Derek Casey. Six days later, the Confederates (5-4) went up against Douglas Freeman junior Daniel Lynch. The result for the Lee-Davis lineup in those two games: six hits and zero runs. On Tuesday, the Rebels lost 1-0 to Daniel Lynch and the Freeman Rebels. That victory came the same day as 4-0 win over Mills Godwin. “That’s always the case, good pitching always beats good hitting,” Lee-Davis coach Kenny Lewis said. “We’re right there. We’ll continue to work at it.” Three of the Confederates’ four losses this season came against teams ranked in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 poll. And all four losses came by margins of three runs or less. Against Hanover, the Confederates only lost by a 20 margin. Against Freeman, Patrick Holler went nose-tonose with Lynch. He located his curveball well and pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits. “Our kids are working their tails off on the mound to keep us in there,” Lewis said. This was Holler’s second straight effective outing. He fell

behind in some counts, but was able to keep his head above water. Lewis called him “wildly effective.” But he made one mistake against Connor Melhorn, and that one error was enough to lose the game. Melhorn laced the ball down the left field line to lead off the

third inning with a double. Two batters later, he scored Freeman’s only run of the day. The Rebels, 8-0 and ranked No. 2 in the Times-Dispatch Top 10, managed only four hits, and Melhorn’s was the only one that went for extra bases. Freeman wasn’t going to let that hit go to waste.
The next batter, Sam Cox, put down a perfect bunt 20 feet down the third base line, a foot inside the line. Cox raced to first and beat the throw for an infield single. Next, J.T. Bellotti skied a fly ball to center, scoring Melhorn on an easy sacrifice fly. For a team that has scored seven runs
or more in five games this season, the Rebels showed the ability to manufacture a run, too. “If we need to play small ball, each person can get the job done,” Melhorn said. “No one on the team is selfish. We’ll do whatever it takes to get a run.” Later in the third inning, Cox left the game after a collision at the plate. Logan Harvey hit a single to third, and Cox tried to score on it, but he was tagged out at the plate. When he slid into home, his mouth banged into the facemask of the catcher. Cox stood up with a mouthful of blood. He headed off to get stitches in his gums, Freeman
coach Ray Moore said. During the top half of each inning, Lynch was putting down batters one after another. He allowed two hits and two walks, striking out five. “He was commanding his pitches, changing planes and changing speeds,” Lewis said. The closest Lynch came to trouble was the third inning. The Confederates, 5-4 and ranked seventh in the T-D Top 10, loaded the bases with an error and two walks. Raiders stumble in tough scrap at Freeman By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com
Atlee pitcher Collin Bazemore kept Douglas Freeman down, but he could not keep the Rebels down long enough. Designated hitter Ethan Payne tapped Bazemore for a two-run home run in the fourth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and lead Douglas Freeman to a 2-1 victory in the last of three games at Douglas Freeman Wednesday. The defeat was one in a series of 2-1 losses for the Raiders. “We’ve got to get over the 21,” said Atlee head coach Barry Burton. “These young fellows, they want to stay in, get in the fight. We’ll keep working at it.” Douglas Freeman found out early it would have to work for the win. The Rebels put two men on base in the first inning. With one out, shortstop Jack Gerstenmaier singled, but was

first base. The at-bat went 11 pitches, and Sorokowski fouled off five straight. But Lynch faltered on pitch No. 11, sending a fastball in the dirt. “It was a good at-bat by him,” Lynch said. The pressure on Lynch didn’t last long. He forced Josh Lam to groundout to second, ending the inning. Lynch didn’t struggle again. He allowed only one hit through the next three innings. Holler went six innings and gave up one run on four hits in his start for Lee-Davis. “We didn’t play our best and we still pulled it out,” Lynch said.
picked off at first by Bazemore and Atlee first baseman Stephen Hurd. Douglas Freeman catcher Logan Harvey likewise singled, but was again picked off at first by Bazemore and Hurd. The Raiders took the lead in the second inning. With one out, right fielder Andrew Simpson singled, advanced on a groundout by Hurd, then scored on a single by left fielder Brad Chapman. Chapman was subsequently tagged out while trying to advance from second to third on a fielder’s choice by center fielder Brett Ayer. The Raiders get a runner in scoring position just once more – in the fifth inning – but came up empty. Still, they held off Freeman’s offense until the fourth. It began with Bazemore giving up a leadoff walk to Harvey. Bazemore struck out Douglas Freeman left fielder

In the first game of the day, the Confederates, led by pitcher Joey Pride’s one-hit, 12-strikeout performance and first baseman Andrew Sergent with a two-run triple, defeated Mills Godwin. Lee-Davis scored all its runs in the first inning to give Pride a comfortable lead right from the start. Center fielder Haiden Lamb opened the game with a double, stole third base, and scored on a groundout by second baseman Adam Trice. Designated hitter Justin Sorokowski singled, third baseman Josh Lam walked, and both came home on Sergent’s triple. Sergent then scored on a groundout by center fielder Cody Powers. Sergent’s score was the last score of the game. The Confederates threatened again

in the fourth inning. Powers singled. Shortstop Brett Langhorne walked, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Patrick Holler. Powers was tagged trying to score on catcher Adam Boyle’s fielders’ choice. Lamb grounded out to first base to end the threat. Pride kept the Eagles’ offense off-balance, allowing their sole hit, a singles, to center fielder Matt Jones in the fourth inning. Jones advanced to second on a passed ball, but got no farther. Mills Godwin got one more runner, catcher Bryan Grubbs, in scoring position in the fifth inning, But Grubbs, like Jones, finished the inning at second base. Randolph-Macon sweeps Guilford By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com

Smoke seems to come out of Randolph-Macon catcher Nicholas Maiolo’s mitt as he catches the ball in the Yellow Jackets’ 8-7 victory in the opening game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Guilford Saturday. The Yellow Jackets swept the Quakers to claim the No. 2 seed in the ODAC tournament that begins Thursday.

The first goal RandolphMacon head baseball coach Ray Hedrick set for the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions was to be one of the top two seeds in the ODAC tournament, which begins Thursday at City Stadium in Lynchburg. Saturday, with a sweep of visiting Guilford at Hugh Stephens Field, the Yellow Jackets could check that off their wish list. Randolph-Macon defeated the Quakers 8-7 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap to claim the second seed in the conference. The Yellow Jackets will face

fifth-seeded Lynchburg in the second game Thursday, which is slated to start at 2:30 p.m. “Our goal going into the season was to be a top-two seed,” Hedrick said. “I don’t remember the last time Randolph-Macon finished one or two, but since I’ve been here, we haven’t. Our highest seed was three.” Former Benedictine standout Jordan Schmeer led the Yellow Jackets with four hits and four RBI on the day – evenly split between both games. tion,” Moore said. “Ethan was looking for a specific pitch and he got the pitch he wanted and put a good swing on it.” Burton said the home run wasn’t the Raiders’ problem. “The problem with that is we walked the leadoff hitter,” Burton said. “You don’t walk the leadoff hitter, even if he does [hit a home run], it is 1-1. You can’t walk people. When you walk people, you pay for it.” Burton still praised Bazemore’s overall effort. “He pitched great,” Burton said. “He’s a bulldog. He pulls his hat down over his eyes and goes after you. He’s a tough nut.” Moore agreed. “Bazemore’s a very good high school pitcher,” Moore said. “He did a nice job today of mixing it up and hitting his spots against us and really keeping us at bay. We knew going into the game that he’s a very good pitcher, so we were anticipating it being see RAIDERS, pg. 41
