According to Lt. Chris R. Whitley, the academy will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. It is
being offered free of charge. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, July 15. The program is available to Hanover residents, business owners or employees who are at least 21 years of age. Challenge to voters: ‘ordinary Peterson appoints Bourassa citizens’ must fight for change to Mechanicsville HCSB seat

ack Trammell, the Democratic candidate for the 7th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, issued a challenge to voters on Saturday when addressing an open meeting of the Hanover County Democratic Committee. In Nov. 4’s General Election, Trammell will face Tea Party Republican David Brat, who defeated incumbent Eric Cantor in the Tuesday, June 10, Primary Election. Trammell challenged voters to make the November election a time when “ordinary citizens” fight for change. “This election could be a throwback to the days when ordinary citizens decide to fight for change,” Trammell told a crowd of more than 130. Gordon Silver, chair of the Hanover Democratic Committee, told Trammell, “We are all behind you 100 percent.” The race between Trammell and Brat has captured national attention and put Ashland in the spotlight. The two are professors at Randolph-Macon College in the town known
as “The Center of the Universe.” Trammell talked about his history of service to the community, including his days teaching special education at Liberty Middle School. He noted his commitment to quality public education and promised to work for student loan reform. He advocated for greater transparency and accountability in transportation funding and said he wants to tackle the challenges of maintaining community in the face of inevitable growth. Trammell also said he believes “in a health care system that emphasizes people leading healthy lives, not in maximizing profits.” Montpelier resident Melissa Dopp said, “I felt there was a striking similarity between Mark Warner and Jack Trammell in terms of style and moderation. The supervisors endorsed the recommendation of their Mechanicsville member, Canova Peterson, who announced his decision at last week’s regular meeting. Before declaring his appointment, Peterson met and interviewed four candidates for the seat. “Each of them has a lot of passion, many strengths and a lot to offer the county,” Peterson said of the process. The action effectively ends Glenn Millican’s 24-year career with the school district. Peterson praised the work of Millican and his colleagues, as well as Jamelle Wilson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, for their accom-

MDA Camp: an inspiring experience

Politics: You never know what will occur We made national news last Tuesday night with the defeat of House Minority Leader Eric Cantor by Randolph-Macon College professor David Brat. Then, on Wednesday, longtime Mechanicsville District representative Glenn Millican lost his seat on the Hanover County School Board. While ripples were still being felt with Cantor’s fall, there was plenty of interest in who Canova Peterson, the Mechanicsville District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, would appoint. Call it women’s intuition or just too many years of watching political maneuvering, but here’s one Hanover County resident who was not surprised to see Millican replaced. And that’s not to be dismissive in any way about his service through the years. We have seen the face of the School Board change in recent years, with other long-serving members not being reappointed. So, again, the question must be asked: Shouldn’t we be electing members to the Hanover County School Board? This isn’t an issue of trying to take any power from the supervisors, rather it’s about the voters taking charge of who represents them. The supervisors accept nominations for those School Board seats, but, ultimately, they make the selection. In recent years, we have seen the appointees representing Ashland, Cold Harbor and South Anna change. Some, like Millican, had many years of service to the school district. It all goes back to whether we the people decide that we want to vote for our School Board representatives. As for Cantor and Brat, no one should take anything for granted looking to November. The Republicans have problems from within and the Democrats will, no doubt, take every advantage of those issues. Speaking of the Democrats, we received a phone call from them Wednesday morning. They are ready to roll with their candidate for the 7th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Get ready: David Brat vs. Jack Trammell, two R-MC professors, will be all over the news. By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Take U.S. 460 east to Wakefield and enter the large camp just south of town, and prepare to be amazed, inspired and changed. For one week out of the year, a camp that normally houses rambunctious adolescents who constantly irritate their counselors opens their doors to a special group of kids. It’s no different the second week of June, except for one thing: Every camper during that week has Muscular Dystrophy. And each year the Muscular Dystrophy Association sends these special children to camp for a week
— on the house. It’s a week where everything is possible and accessible for kids who spend a lifetime overcoming obstacles and dealing with unbelievable odds against them. It’s a time when they can be in their world, where no one stares or questions their condition, and no obstacles are too large to overcome. For this brief period, they forget the endless medical visits, the uncomfortable leg braces, the countless number of steps and the daily pain of their disease. But, the main thing they do is laugh, have fun and do the things other kids their age do. There’s plenty of
high-speed scooter tag, constant high jinks and a good dose of the normal summer camp activities. It’s my son Jack’s third year at MDA camp. It’s his first year with a scooter. Each year, I leave the camp amazed at the ability of these gifted kids to laugh in the face of such adversity. Every smile I see reminds me of the effort it took to put it there, and the will it requires to maintain that attitude. There’s another group of people at MDA Camp that I find it almost impossible to amply honor. The volunteers who man the camp, see MDA, pg. 8

From the mouths of babes: When will the soldiers speak? “When will we hear the soldiers’ stories?” The bright, curious eyes of a 7-year-old looked up at me as she asked this question while I chaperoned several girls from our scouting troop at the recent Hanover Memorial Day celebration. Truth from the mouths of babes. I’ve attended a good number of the Memorial Day and Veterans Day events over the years, and The Hanover Veterans Committee generally does a wonderful job with the event. However, the last few years I’ve walked away a bit unsettled and I’ve heard the same observations from other people: What happened to the focus on the veteran? In my opinion, we heard too much about “who” helped to build the memorial and “how” it was built, and not enough about “why” it was built. We had an audience full of veterans and active members of the military, moms and dads, widows and children, wives and siblings. They have stories to tell. Stories we, and our children, need to hear. Here in Hanover County we’re surrounded by events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of a multitude of Civil War battles. Many descendants, including my daughter, were in that audience. They have stories to tell: stories of insurmountable odds, amazing valor and small decisions that had huge
repercussions. Stories we need to be reminded of. We could have been introduced to those veterans and their families and descendants. We could have heard their stories — the stories of “why” we gather on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Instead we heard about the “dignitaries” in attendance — public servants, mind you. We saw and heard a politician on the campaign trail — he hasn’t been in attendance at most of the previous ceremonies I attended, except for this one, which was taking place just weeks from a primary. Our elected officials need to hear “from” our veterans and their families. Not talk “to” them. I have tremendous respect for the Hanover Veterans Committee because I have a sense of how much work goes see LETTERS, pg. 8

Supervisor Ed Via (Ashland) failed to listen to the majority of his own constituents when making his appointment after Sue Watson stepped down. Then, Supervisor Wayne Hazzard removed the sitting School Board chair from South Anna, Ann Gladstone, and now Supervisor Peterson has removed the sitting vice chair, Millican. These two members of the School Board were selected by their peers to these posts of leadership, only to have Hazzard and Peterson rebuff that confidence in their leadership. Gladstone and Millican guided our system through five years of successive budget cuts (2009-2013) with aplomb, but were rejected despite communi-

FOHS already listed numerous reasons why Millican deserved reappointment. We further propose that in the future the Board of Supervisors have a public hearing on these candidates after the nominations have been made. Such an important position requires vetting and public discussion before a decision is made. Other counties even take an entire election process to make these kinds of decisions. While we accept Hanover’s appointment system, we also feel that public input should be an integral part of it. When asked about the seat before the public hearing by local media, Peterson chose not to disclose the names of potential nominees he had, saying only “I have been approached by several people about the seat.” Although Millican publicly declared in advance that he would seek reappointment, the remaining nominees were announced the same night as the public hearing. This gave the public no time to consider the other nominees in advance of the hearing. Throughout the process, Peterson repeatedly referred to his decision, to his consideration of the candidates without once encouraging input from his constituents or from the public. This is not the way a democratic, transparent process is supposed to work. Our School Board maybe an appointed one, but Peterson

Margie Kaszuba KASZUBA, Margie Hannah Elkins, retired to be with her Lord June 10, 2014. Margie was born March 17, 1921 in Athens, Tennessee. She grew up in a home where she acquired the virtues of strong self-reli- KASZUBA ance and respect for her fellow man. She was known by all who knew her to be a most pragmatic and fair human being and seldom refrained from speaking her mind. Combine this with a mischievous sense of humor and you’ve got Margie pegged. After completing school in Tennessee, Margie joined the U.S Navy in 1944 during WWII and served as an x-ray technician at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth. After her service in the Navy, Margie began her civil service career at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington. There, she met and married Raymond J. Kaszuba. She lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland until 1992, then moved to Richmond to enjoy the rest of her life with her family and friends at Lakeside United Methodist, where she was lovingly referred to as “The Admiral.” An avid reader, she was always known to have one or two books in play at all times. John MacHale MacHALE, John Martin Jr., 92, died in hospice care in Richmond on June 4, 2014. Jack was the devoted husband of Margaret Butler MacHale “Peggy,” the love of his life, who predeceased him in 2011. MACHALE June 4, 2014 also marked Jack and Peggy’s 65th wedding anniversary. Jack was born July 14, 1921 in Winchester and grew up in Easton, Maryland with his brother, Bill. After graduating high school and serving on a South American cruise ship, Jack served in the U.S. Army in England during WWII, where he was assigned to train troops for combat. He then went on to attend Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, where he met his wife to be, Peggy Butler. They married June 4,

He was a loved husband, devoted father and respected member of his church and community. He served as a Deacon and Elder in the Blackstone Presbyterian Church and in a number of civic organizations in Blackstone. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Davis McKissick; his sons,

1949. He worked in retail management with the JC Penney Co., but soon found his true calling as a teacher with Montgomery County Schools in Maryland. His natural leadership abilities led him into school administration, where he excelled until he retired in 1979. He then went on to a third career as a vice-president of District Title Co., until he and Peggy moved to the home they built on the Yeocomico River. They spent almost 20 wonderful years in Callao, enjoying family, life on the river and traveling, before moving to Richmond. Jack left a wonderful legacy that lives on through his family. Jack and Peggy are both survived by their four children and their families, John MacHale III; Patti Bartol (Larry) and their children, Megan Flynn (Chuck) and their two children, Avery and Delaney; Joe Tucker (Samantha) and their child Keira; and Mark Bartol (Stephanie) and their three children, Lauren, Mackenzie and Brayden; Kevin MacHale (partner, Peggy Mahon); and Mark MacHale (Laurelee) and their two children, Luke and Maggie. During the Korean War, he was assigned to the Tuberculosis service at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, where he served as Director of Clinical Research under Dr. Carl W. Tempel. Other assignments in the Army Medical Corps followed at Tripler General Hospital, Hawaii, Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, Martin Army Hospital, Fort Benning, Georgia, where Dr. Pitts served as Chief of the Department of Medicine and Second General Hospital (Regional), Landstuhl, Germany, serving as Chief of the Department of Medicine, Chief of Pulmonary Disease Service, and Consultant in Pulmonary Medicine for the European Theatre. While at Walter Reed Army Hospital, from 1966 until retirement with the rank of Colonel in 1969, Dr. Pitts served as Chief of Pulmonary Medicine to the Army surgeon general. At the time of his retirement, he received the Legion of Merit Award, cited for his role as clinician consultant and educator in the field of pulmonary medicine. After retiring from the military, he served as Medical Director of the Blue Ridge Sanatorium in Charlottesville, and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia. Subsequently, he was District Health Director of Henrico County until retiring in 1990. Dr. Pitts maintained his professional standing and was certified and re-certified in the practice of internal medicine and was also certified by the American College of Physicians in pulmonary medicine. In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Pitts was awarded the Douglas Southall Freeman Award of the Virginia Lung Association and the Distinguished Service Award of the Virginia Health Association in 1989. He chaired the Tuberculosis Committee of the Virginia Thoracic Society and served as President of the

We had four candidates offer up their time and talents to serve on our School Board. I wish there was some way I could put all four of them to work, but, unfortunately I can only recommend one.� Bourassa, 51, a network support analyst for the Department of Judicial Information and Technology, said he is “excited� about his new role, and is more than willing to serve. Bourassa has served on several citizens committees, including the Economic Development Authority and served as a chief election official. He was selected over three other candidates, including Millican, Patricia Rudolph and Robert Barnette. “This is the next step for me to take to get more involved in the county. This will be a great opportunity to focus on what we can do best for our children,� Bourassa said. He said he plans to meet with other School Board members to compile his list of priorities, but he has some ideas on where to start. “I would like to be able to expand what we can, maybe some additional classes or some more honors classes,� he said. “I also want to get students

Un-Cookoff kicks off Tomato Festival a day early Staff Report news@mechlocal.com The 2014 Hanover Tomato Festival will open a day earlier than previous years with the addition of the Tomato Un-Cookoff at Pole Green Park at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville. From 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 11, the Tomato Un-Cookoff will kick off the annual celebration of the Hanover Tomato. This is a free event, with the exception of a $5 tasting fee for those wishing to participate in the tomato recipe tasting/judging. The Happy Hill Gang and Prospect 7 will provide live music for the evening. Entertainment is being presented by the E.J. Wade Foundation. Festival organizers — the Hanover Tomato Festival Committee, Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department — said participants don’t have to be “master chef ” to compete. All that is required is a “great Hanover Tomato recipe.” Anyone with a tomato recipe that doesn’t require cooking (and family and friends say is “delicious”) such as a salsa, bruschetta or juice is invited to take part in the Un-Cookoff. Participation is free and each contestant will be provided with five pounds of Hanover Tomatoes. Those competing are to bring their other ingredients. They are welcome to prepare in advance for their dishes. However, the dish will be prepared on-site, with samples being given out for judging. superintendent in charge of finance, told the School Board that he expects the system to again have unspent funds at the end of the fiscal year. “As we get closer to yearend, we’re able to pretty accurately project what we think our unspent appropriations will be,” Myers said. And the news is similar to the report Myers issued a year ago. “We should have somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million remaining in unspent
appropriations,” Myers said. About $3 million of those funds are already committed, leaving a $5 million balance. “We are before you tonight asking if you would approve $1 million to improve our facilities,” Myers said. The weight exercise room at Lee-Davis High School is scheduled for renovation. “All the other high schools have excellent weight facilities,” Myers said. A bathroom upgrade at Henry Clay Elementary School
also is on the list of summer projects. The renovation will bring the restrooms up to ADA (Americans with Disability Act) code. The rest are operating items. “We are reclaiming four rooms at Patrick Henry [High School],” Myers said. Other projects include painting, grounds cleanup and other site improvements. School Board members unanimously approved the appropriation for summer renovations.

Last year, the school system spent more than $800,000 for summer projects, a program that produced positive results, according to Myers. Myers also updated the School Board on the progress on the formation of a group slated to study facility capacity. “We anticipate having around 20 and as many as 25 on our committee,” Myers said. Myers indicated the new committee could provide valuable feedback on a number of

She has had her first set of vaccines and is heartworm test negative. Daisy is a younger dog who is very sweet. She was a little scared when she first came into the shelter. She has gradually become much more social and friendly. She will be a great dog for someone who will work with her. Ginger, 363446, is a 2-year-old female domestic medium-hair cat. She has been given her first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV negative. Ginger is a beautiful little girl. She has a great temperament as well. She loves to be brushed and petted. She also seems to get along well with other cats. She would be a great cat for any household. She first taught fifth graders in Highland Springs and then in the fall of 1979, when John Rolfe Middle School opened, she taught science until her retirement. Visiting with former students and fellow teachers warmed her heart. Auntie, as her nieces and nephews called her, loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with her sister in Wicomico Church. In her retirement, she also enjoyed cruising with her brother-inlaw and sister in Florida, Key West, Bahamas, New York and Maine. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, when she would help her sister decorate and organize for the festivities. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses in ICU at St. Mary’s, for the care and compassion that Evelyn received. The family received visitors on Monday, June 16at the Parham Chapel,

225-plus runners/walkers take part in HHS 5K Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com Hanover High School recently held its second annual 5K run and first ever 1-mile Kids Run, with more than 225 runners and walkers participating. Several Hanover art students painted faces and many of the cast members from the “Oklahoma” play sang the national anthem a capella. Then, the runners and walkers were off, the Hanover Hawk included. As the participants neared the three-mile mark, they were treated with the spirit and sounds of Hanover High School’s Pep Band to give them the extra boost needed to reach the finish line. Atlee girls’ indoor track team honored by School Board The Atlee High School Girls’ Indoor Track Team completed the 2014 season as the Virginia High School League Group 5A Team State Champions. The Raiders scored 67 points to beat Mills Godwin High School, which finished second with 50 points. The accomplishment is Atlee High School’s first Girls’ Indoor Track Team state championship. Members of the team were recognized during a recent Hanover County School Board meeting. Hawks win! Hawks win! Hawks win! Hanover beats Millbrook to earn second straight state baseball title By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com LYNCHBURG — While most Hanover High School seniors were graduating in some arena in Richmond Saturday afternoon, 10 seniors on the Hawks’ baseball squad had earned the right to graduate somewhere else: they did their walk down the third-base line and picked up their diplomas at home plate on Liberty University’s diamond. It was a fitting place to end their high school academic careers, as it is where they ended their high school athletic careers, having just beaten Millbrook 7-1 in the Group 4A state baseball tournament for their second straight state championship. “It was quite a run,” said Hanover head coach Charlie Dragum. “Back to back years, it’s been awesome.” Hanover starter Derek Casey finished his high school pitching career with a completegame victory – and without a single loss to his credit. Casey said he was not feeling much pressure going into the final. “It’s just another baseball game,” Casey said. “Honestly, the more pressure I felt was

because it was my last baseball game at Hanover. I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun, nerve-wracking, but we got the win.” Casey did not overpower the Millbrook hitters. He gave up four hits and one run – unearned – and struck out four. The third inning, he gave up back-to-back walks, which prompted a meeting on the mound to settle him down. “The next pitch was a strike and we went right back at it,” Casey said. Millbrook head coach Brian Burke said Casey made the Pioneers work hard for whatever they could get. “We knew what we were getting ourselves into,” Burke said. “We knew we’d have to crawl and scratch and try to figure [the Hawks] out and dig for runs.” But the defense behind him was stingy: First baseman John Gregory had 13 put-outs and second baseman Josh Shepherd had eight assists and two putouts himself. Shepherd also provided much of the Hawks’ offense, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. “We were just ready today,” Shepherd said. “Not many people get an opportunity to repeat, and we just – us team seniors

For six innings, King William High School rolled against Page County. Then, the Cavaliers’ train derailed. Held scoreless for six innings, the Panthers scored five runs on five hits and an error in the seventh inning to stun King William and win the Group 2A state softball championship Saturday at Radford. “I think everybody was nervous and they just hit the ball,” Cavaliers junior third baseman Essence Jackson said. “We got all tightened up, didn’t make the plays that we’re supposed to make, didn’t catch the ball. Harless, the Conference 10 pitcher of the year, surrendered three hits, two walks and struck out seven for the defending Group AAA champions. Cameryn Strother started the top of the fourth inning with a double off Patriot starter Candace Whittemore. Chloe Carr then hit a high fly ball to deep centerfield that ended up falling for an error. Strother scored from second, giving Great Bridge the 1-0 lead and

Polk wins 4A singles tennis title By Dave Lawrence dlawrence@mechlocal.com Salem High School senior Michael Drougas had a perfect high school career going in to his final high school match – the Group 4A boys’ singles tennis championship at Liberty University Thursday. The perfect career was spoiled by Hanover High School senior Danny Polk. Polk defeated Drougas 6-1, 6-3 to become the first Group

4A boys’ singles champion. “It feels amazing to work so hard for four years and finally to come up with the prize that I’ve always had my eye on,” Polk said. Polk, who advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Parker Wilson of John Handley, had played against Drougas the previous summer – and lost. “He beat up on me in the summer,” Polk said. “I was probably the underdog in [the final]. I knew I could beat him.

Braxton Waitman WAITMAN, Braxton Warren, was born sleeping Friday, June 13, 2014 at 2:20 a.m. Braxton was 2 pounds, 3.8 ounces and 14.5 inches long. He had most all of his daddy’s features but mommy’s nose and strawberry blonde curly hair. Braxton is the son of Benjamin and Danielle Waitman. His paternal grandparents are Kevin and Karen Waitman; maternal grandparents are Frank Myers and Sharon Miller. Braxton is being held in the arms of his Lord. We would have given him the world but he got heaven instead. Proverbs 3:5 — Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. A memorial service will be held for our precious angel Wednesday, June 18, at Pole Green Church of Christ. A visitation will begin at 5 p.m. with services following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Braxton’s name to the following non profits: Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Photography and NICU Helping Hands.

He loved music, from classical to jazz to spiritual songs, and performed duets with his wife Ruthie. He enjoyed nature, gardening, and camping and loved many loyal canine companions throughout his life. Tom was a faithful servant of God and an inspiration to all whose lives he touched. A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville, The Rev. Rebekah Johns officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to St. James Presbyterian Church in King William or the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

WALTZ, The Rev. Thomas Malcolm, 80, of Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, originally from Detroit, formerly of Newtown, journeyed to God on June 11, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Ruth Whaley Waltz; his four beautiful daughters, Jennifer WALTZ Lundin, Sara Simasek, Vivian Waltz and Natalie Waltz; 11 precious grandchildren and eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Beatty Waltz and Frances Schell Waltz and three siblings. He received his Engineering degree from the University of Michigan and his Masters in Electrical Engineering. He earned his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. Pastor Tom enjoyed two careers. He was Executive Vice President at Trans-Lux Corporation in Norwalk, Connecticut. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1997 and served six churches in the Presbytery of the James. His passion was for preaching and teaching the Word. He was twice honored to give
WATSON, Marion Kenneth Sr., 90, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2014. He was a longtime resident of Sandston. Marion was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church and worked at Henrico County as a Sewage and Water Plant Operator. After 30 plus years of dedi- WATSON cated work, he retired and began to work for his son part-time at M.K. Watson Jr. Co., where he was a jack of all trades. There was never a position that he could not fulfill. Marion loved rodeos, farming and working in the hayfield with his children and grandchildren. His family was the joy of his life. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 70 years, Gladys S. Watson; children, M. Kenneth Watson Jr. (Linda) and Janice W. Caldwell (Steven); six grandchildren, Dawn Watson-Bronner (Rob), Lisa Davis (Joe), Melissa Watson, Scott Caldwell (Kim), Kenny Caldwell (Casey) and Kenneth Watson (Jaimee); 11 greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friend. He will be greatly missed. Visitation was Wednesday, June 11, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Richmond Va. 23231. Funeral services were Thursday, June 12, at Black Creek Baptist Church, 6289 Mcclellan Rd. Mechanicsville, Va. 23111. Marion was laid to rest at Black Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Properly applied first aid can save your pet’s life, reduce recovery time and be the difference between temporary disability and lifelong disability. This program concentrates on basic first aid care. It is not intended to replace veterinary care. This course does include canine and feline CPR.
