Retired FDNY firefighter honors L&M’s support By Meredith Rigsby News Editor MECHANICSVILLE — Tom Delpino, a retired New York City firefighter and representative of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to the Towers Foundation, visited L&M Carpet One in Mechanicsville last week to honor and personally thank owner Morris Shelton for his support of the foundation’s Building for America’s Bravest (BFAB) program. L&M Carpet One and its manufacturing partner, Mohawk, have committed to provide the flooring and installation for 46 “smart homes” under this initiative.

In recognition of its dedication and support, Delpino visited the Mechanicsville Carpet One on Tuesday, May 5, to present a speciallydesigned shadowbox containing 9/11 steel from Ground Zero to the store owner. “It’s a great cause, one that we are on board with 100 percent and I couldn’t think of a better cause,” Shelton said. “We are behind it all the way.” Through the Stephen Siller Tunnel to the Towers Foundation, the BFAB program builds hiMeredith Rigsby/The Local tech smart homes for service members returning L&M Carpet One owner Morris Shelton, second from right, and employees Renton Arkesteyn, from war who have been catastrophically injured. second from left, and Matt Shelton, right, were presented with a special gift of recognition from see FIREFIGHTER, pg. 4

Hanover Tavern addition almost complete By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER — After a slow start due to weather delays during the winter, a new educational and activities center at Hanover Tavern is almost complete and ready for spring activities. “They started construction in very late December with some basic things and really got cranking the first of January,”

said David Deal, executive director of the Hanover Tavern Foundation, the group entrusted with the care and management of the county landmark. “We lost three weeks in the winter due to bad weather,” Deal said. “From beginning to completion, it’s still going to be less than five months.” h The new center is an integral part of the tavern’s “Building our Future” campaign, a $2 million effort that involves the new cen-

ter, expanded educational programs and upgrades to the existing tavern. Deal said the foundation has a five-year plan to accomplish those goals, and the new center is a welcome addition to the tavern’s facilities. For the past decade, a large tent in the rear yard has accommodated concerts, receptions and other events. The bookings see TAVERN, pg. 4
