OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

Pride swells at the sight of our flag flying When my mother moved to Mechanicsville in September 2009, a promise was made to take her to our hometown at least twice a year to decorate the graves of family members. Memorial Day was the first for 2015. There’s always been a great sense of pride in West Virginia (my home state) when it comes to the number of men and women who serve their country. The sea of small U.S. flags flying at the graves of those who had served reminded us of that call to duty so many answered. Many of my relatives enlisted during times of war and peace. Dad’s oldest brother was aboard the USS Raleigh when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The second oldest also was in the Navy during World War II. And a cousin who is my age was a Black Hawk pilot in the U.S. Army. (I always like to point out that she was a Black Hawk pilot. Yeah, pretty cool.) The cemetery we visited on Saturday, common to so many communities in West Virginia, has rolling hills and several areas designated for burial. Small flags and some a bit larger hung from shepherd’s poles. Decorating the graves is always solemn and we’ll busy ourselves with cleaning the gravesites and properly arranging the flowers Mom takes such care in selecting and preparing for placement. Ever-observant, yours truly always takes time to pause and reflect upon the lives lost serving our great nation and those who, thankfully, returned home to their loved ones. The markers of many have insignias denoting which branch of the military they served. Regardless of weather conditions or how weary this writer may be, after so many visits you know which graves aren’t being attended to anymore. There will be time taken to brush off the newly mowed grass and add a little polish so the name stands out in remembrance of their service. It’s all about respect for their service. The veterans’ organizations that join with families in placing flags on the graves must be praised. Many are in their 80s and 90s but remain devoted to remembering their comrades. And, yes, my father’s grave, which I’ll admit I give extra attention and care, has a flag flying at the marker. His peacetime service also is noted. Melody Kinser

When you wish upon a star By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist A trip to Disney World is a journey geared for the young at heart, but not so for those “long in the tooth.” My more than experienced legs are telling me that touring theme parks is a young man’s game. I was immediately scared straight the first day of the vacation when I learned the average visitor to the Magic Kingdom walks an average of 10 miles a day. My memory bank immediately attempted to recall data regarding the last time I walked 10 miles in a day, but kept coming up blank. You will be happy to know they

don’t make you walk all of it at one time. They allow you just enough time to spend the better part of your savings on beverages that allow just enough hydration for you to — what else? — keep walking. To be honest, as I watched my son Jack roll along in his wheelchair, my tired feet seemed very insignificant. I decided early that I’d be thankful for every step I took, and every foot he rolled. Make-A-Wish trips evoke multiple emotions, but, for that one special week you put all of that away. Jack deserved no less than a week of fun, frolic and other 10-year-old nonsense. I wasn’t sure what I’d learn from

this experience, but I was convinced it would be the best week of Jack’s young life. He’s the most courageous person I know and reminds me daily that life is precious and every minute counts. As we trekked through five theme parks intertwined with endless shopping, eating and driving, the smile never left his face. And that’s what Make-A-Wish is all about: smiles. The memories made in a short week provide the best souvenirs of a trip that I wish no child had to make. I thought of the countless families who had made the same journey we were on, and the cruel realities of tersee STAR, pg. 7

Student rebuts letter about need for a voice It seems as though a few narrow-minded if not downright obtuse individuals who reside in Hanover County are trying to discredit a group of students by claiming that they are mere pawns in the hands of the teachers’ union, simply because they cannot think of any other legitimate argument against their sound reasoning. Anyone who is well-versed in state and local laws and regulations is well aware that Virginia is one of the five states that does not allow collective bargaining for educators, therefore making teachers’ unions (in the correct use of the word) illegal. Also as a student, I was personally surprised to learn that some individuals would disparage students for wanting a larger say in policies that affect them directly. Because that is certainly the best way to keep students engaged in learning and furthering their education — by telling them that they have absolutely no say in it and should leave the decision making to the “adults.” I can’t help but ask, would you rather us be doing something else less worthwhile with our time, such as participating in destructive activities, rather than attempting to organize ourselves for a common cause that is intended to result in better educated citizens? It is evident that not everyone is familiar with the actual

argument being made by Hanover Students for Freedom of Information and Learning, or perhaps some covered their ears in fear of hearing logical discourse, so I will clarify. The key word is critical thinking. Working in the grey. Preparing kids for the next step in their lives by teaching them that not everything is black and white, and that some issues call for meaningful discussion and thinking. HSFOIL would like to further the idea that anything that causes a student to partake in meaningful discussion and critical thinking should not be discouraged, which is why we find fault with policies 6-1.10, 6-5.6(A) and 6-5.7, which discourage controversial materials by virtue of an opt-out option, as well as create loopholes for outside influsee LETTERS, pg. 8

minal childhood diseases. But, then I thought of all those children with huge smiles on their faces, and, somehow, the dismal reality of my son’s disease softened if just for a second. I’ll never forget what MakeA-Wish did for Jack and his family. We made an enormous amount of memories in a short time. Sadly, that’s also something Make-A-Wish represents. There is one thing we took to Florida that returned intact back in Richmond: our unconditional belief in hope and a refusal to give up searching for treatments, cures and solutions. On our final day of the trip we visited a castle containing thousands of gold stars, each inscribed in a personal and unique way. The gold emblems represent a child who passed this way prior to Jack’s visit. More importantly, each one equates to a wish, a wish not

dissimilar to our family’s hopes and dreams. As we gathered around Jack and each of us put our hands atop his, we wished as hard as we could. Jack’s star is now permanently situated packed in with the thousands of other wishes. In my estimation, it’s a badge of courage. Thinking of that star, a week

full of priceless memories, and the smile on Jack’s face … well, it makes my tired legs seem pretty small. And as for that wish? We carry it daily in a hope that does not waiver, a belief that prayers are answered and dreams come true and a commitment to one little boy and a wish. And when you wish upon a star . . .

Supervisors who appoint its members? Seeing as though the supervisors have the hiring and firing power, and with the efforts to make a “joint education committee” to close the gap between the school board’s jurisdiction and that of the supervisors, it appears that the latter is true. And, as the saying goes, “perception is reality.” To set the record straight, by no means is HSFOIL being manipulated by a teachers union or “teachers lobby,” and we find it quite amusing that certain individuals would attempt to discredit our thoughts and perspectives by proposing that we are. We do believe, however, that teachers are what make our county and school system exceptional, and implementing a policy that creates an unnecessary burden for them is unjust. And in response to those individuals’ claims, this writer would like to point out these individuals are the ones who spend their disposable time writing letters to the editor in response to efforts made by HSFOIL. So, I ask, who is really being controlled? The students who are genuinely invested in bettering the education of their

peers or these narrow-minded individuals fueled by their rigid convictions? Caroline Provost Mechanicsville

Support for Trip Chalkley I am truly appalled at Ed Vaughn’s untruthful assertions about our current commonwealth’s attorney, Trip Chalkley. Sadly, I know from experience, politics can be a very ugly business and the deceptive tactics Ed Vaughn is using to try and unseat our current commonwealth’s attorney is simply deplorable. He should be ashamed of such misleading statements and we have no place for such politics in our beloved Hanover County. As Hanover citizens, we are extremely blessed to have the finest two top law enforcement professionals, our sheriff, Col. David R. Hines, and our commonwealth’s attorney, Trip Chalkley, who work so well in harmony with each other’s office to maintain the highest possible rule of law that is fair and just for all of its citizens. The integrity and experience of these two public servants is unquestionable and both are proven leaders in their

respective offices. Recently I read a letter signed by four former Hanover County prosecutors which read in part: “Trip’s opponent’s claims of lack of leadership in the office is absurd and based upon no facts. While working in the office, Trip was a constant presence, always made time to meet with us and help prepare cases. His knowledge and experience were invaluable assets to us as we progressed in the office. Indeed, it was Trip’s reputation as a prosecutor, trial attorney and leader that made us apply to his office for appointment.” These four attorneys left to advance their respective careers unbridled financially by the restraints of a county budget in order to earn a greater living for their families but they are all grateful for the experience each gained under the leadership of Trip Chalkley. I am proud to join Sheriff Hines and so many others in support of our current commonwealth’s attorney. Hanover citizens are so blessed to have such a strong and professional law enforcement team working to keep our community safe and crime free. LMES students get ‘real world’ look at stock market Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE — Fifth grade students from Laurel Meadow Elementary School in Kimberly Allen and Alicia Broughton’s math class participated in the spring session of The Stock Market Game, a simulation of “real world” stock market trading sponsored by the Virginia Council on Economic Education. Two teams earned top honors as regional winners in the VCU division. During the 10-week national program, students participate in an educational Internet simulation of Wall Street and invest a hypothetical $100,000 in a portfolio of common stocks traded on the New York, American and NASDAQ exchanges. Students form teams;

research stocks and issuing companies; and enter trades on the SMG website at real-time prices. At the end of the 10-week game, the team in each of the three grade-level divisions with the highest value portfolio is declared a winner. First Place Team: Joshua Carter, Daniel Tomlin, Gabe Sweeney and Noah Jonson. Third Place Team: Ashleigh Lawrence, Madi Wangensteen, Claire Williamson and Marissa Smither. “We are so proud of the success of these two teams. They are clearly great problem solvers and have a bright financial fugure ahead of them,” Karen Carpenter, principal, said. Thompson and Bassett kick off Street Parties By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – A few errant raindrops couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm as a packed house

The town did nothing to diminish its reputation as a place that knows how to party as local favorites Steve Bassett and Robbin Thompson launched the 2015 season.

“Through all these years, Robbin and I have never suggested or asked anyone to make ‘Sweet Virginia Breeze’ the state song. It’s always been people coming to us saying they thought it should be.” STEVE BASSETT Co-writer with Robbin Thompson of recently designated Virginia State Song

gathered for the kickoff of the Ashland Street Parties series.

It was the Central Virginia duo’s first live public perfor-

mance of their recently designated official Virginia State Song, “Sweet Virginia Breeze.” Well, almost the first. “We played it the Governor’s Mansion at the ceremony when the song was recognized,” Thompson said. The pair still plays together four or five times a year, retains a lifelong friendship, and continues to write music together. “Now that we are neighbors, we see even more of each other and still write music together,” Thompson said. They have homes in the Stratford Hills area near the James River. Both acknowledged that Jim Ridolphi for the Local the song designation earlier this year is the culmination of Steve Bassett and Robbin Thompson took separate turns on the stage, but united for a grand see PARTIES, pg. 17

produce a winner. “Through all these years, Robbin and I have never suggested or asked anyone to make ‘Sweet Virginia Breeze’ the state song,” Bassett said. “It’s always been people coming to us saying they thought it should be.” Bassett said he’s honored by the selection and also happy for the many long-time supporters who did not give up on the song. “I’m so happy for everybody who has come to us over the past 38 years and expressed support for the song. I am as happy for them as I am for myself,” the talented singer/ songwriter said. “It’s a great honor,”

Thompson said. “Somebody has tried to do this four different times in 38 years. This time, the efforts just had that feeling of success.” He, too, is happy that fans that consider Thompson/ Bassett part of their musical heritage got what they wanted with the designation. “Everyone came of age along with us,” Thompson said. “I love playing that song. I’ve played it all over the world and it’s known everywhere.” Ashland Street Parties organizer Hank Lowry said the event has come a long way since its humble beginnings back in 2003. “We needed a signature

event for the town,” Lowry said, “and it looks like we got one.” The event began 12 years ago when a group of Ashland citizens decided to beautify and maintain the space located behind the town’s library. “We wanted to do a plaza that would dress up Ashland,” he said. “We wanted to honor Jay Pace and Nina Peace who had passed away the same year. They were so instrumental in making Ashland what it is today.” The group started a nonprofit in 2003 and the event has grown by leaps and bounds since then. For the past two years, Bassett and Thompson have

headlined the opener. “This is a great venue, and it’s great to play in front of people who like what you do. For a musician, that’s what it’s about,” Bassett said. The Ashland Women’s Club, EVB Bank and Kiwanis are just a few of the participants that make the event a consistent winner for the town. Looking out over a soldout crowd, Lowry thought back to the early days. “We had the band set up on pallets,” he said. Lowry came up with the idea of reuniting the legendary duo a couple of years ago. “I called them and said, ‘You guys never play together anymore,’ and asked them to come up to

What David will be doing at The Scripps Institute is learning, experimenting and trying to understand different antibodies and how they affect the Ebola virus. An antibody is a protein produced by white blood cells that is used by the immune system to identify and neutralize pathogens such as bacte-

cle crashes. Of those fatalities, more than a third (38 percent) were unrestrained. Facts about Virginia’s Child Restraint Device Law Child restraint devices are required for children until their 8th birthday. Safety

seats must be approved by the Department of Transportation and properly used. The Virginia law is based solely on age; there is no height or weight requirement. Rear-facing child restraint devices must be placed

in the back seat of a vehicle. If a vehicle does not have a back seat, the child restraint device may be placed in the front passenger seat only if the vehicle is either not equipped with a passenger side airbag or the passenger side airbag has been

ria and viruses, according to medicinenet.com. It can target the virus or bacteria and bind to it either to let the immune system know there is something wrong or interact with the virus or bacteria so it doesn’t work well anymore, David said. Last year, researchers found two combinations of antibodies to treat the Ebola virus that were encouraging. One is called MB-003 and the other is known as ZMAb, David said. “They [the researchers] saw that those were two promising things that could work and they [the antibody cocktails] had combinations of three antibodies inside of them,” David said. “They thought ‘What if we can optimize this? What if we take some from ZMAb and some from MB-003 and make something better?’ So that’s what they did.” The combined antibody cocktails resulted in an experimental drug called ZMapp. ZMapp was given to monkeys infected with the Ebola virus and was effective. It also was provided to two American missionaries who contracted

Ebola while on a mission’s trip in Western Africa, and the drug was again effective in treating the virus, according to David. The challenge now is to understand exactly why this specific antibody cocktail is more effective than other combinations. At The Scripps Research Institute, David will be attempting to put together an image that shows how these molecules interact with the protein on the surface of the virus. “This drug works beautifully, but the virus mutates at a constant rate. So five years from now [if there is] the next big Ebola outbreak, it might be completely different, it [ZMapp] might not work,” David said. “If we can figure out how these work and we can also look at survivors of this current outbreak and what antibodies they produce, we can come up with, they call it a ‘plan ZMapp,’ but we can come up with a library of other cocktails . . . so the next time it comes out, and [if] it’s mutated, we can come up with some-

thing and throw it together and make this combination and give it to patients.” When conducting research as a freshman in a structural biology lab, David had the opportunity to use a technique called X-ray crystallography. This technique isolates the protein and then crystallizes it. X-rays are then shone at the crystallized protein in order to provide an idea about what

the structure looks like, David said. But at The Scripps Institute, David will be utilizing a technique that is a bit different. “What I’m interested in gaining from this experience is they are looking at it [structural biology] in a completely different way, they are doing something called electron microscopy,” David said. “It’s using a completely different

technique in order to understand how this works and what these molecules look like and I’ve never worked with that.” David leaves for California on Saturday, May 30, and the program will provide him with a plane ticket, an apartment that he will share with three other participants and $5,000. In total, there are 13 individuals from around the U.S. taking part in the program.

When I did not have the strength to continue on my own, I relied on the Lord and the YoungLife community to encourage me, love me and satisfy me,” she added. “My joy definitely comes from my relationship with Jesus, and for that I am truly blessed.” “I have incredible parents that, although my biggest sup-

porters, did more than reward me for my grades. They have always stressed the importance of strong character and honor, and to never compromise my morals,” Wilkins said. “These values will carry me through college, jobs and throughout my career. I’m thrilled to be a Wahoo and can’t wait for an adventurous next four years!” (Morgan McFadden’s senior portrait is being published courtesy of Jessica Robertson Photographic Artistry.)

Deputies need superior tools We should all find it very disturbing that the President of the United States is doing his best to limit the tools available for those that enforce the laws necessary to protect themselves and the citizens they have sworn to protect. our Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office deputies to find themselves in a fair fight. Whether they are on the road, or in special circumstances, I want for them to always possess a superior, if not overwhelming, ability to protect themselves and this community. Well regulated, superior firepower ensures that the police and community are safe. Period! We all should want safe streets. Freedom from fear is a fundamental human right, but not for the criminal elements, which would prey on the good citizens of the community. Would-be criminals should be the ones living in fear! Policing is a local responsibility, not that of the President. Limiting the capabilities of the police only emboldens the lowest elements of our society. Only an anarchist would seek to empower the criminal elements. I must be dreaming, or having a nightmare! I have utmost respect for Col. David Hines, sheriff, the members of Hanover Sheriff ’s Office, the Virginia State Police and others that allow all of us to go about our daily routines in a safe and secure manner. They consistently do a great job and to them I say, “Thank you one and all!”

Vaughn endorsed There is an important election coming up on June 9 here in the county. There will be a Republican primary for the office of commonwealth’s attorney. Ed Vaughn is challenging the incumbent Trip Chalkley, making this the first contested race for this office since 2007. Since only Republicans are running in this contest, the winner of the primary will more than likely be the commonwealth’s attorney in 2016. As a resident of the Oak Knoll community, I urge my friends and neighbors to support Ed Vaughn on June 9. Ed Vaughn has the proven experience to be an effective

commonwealth’s attorney from once serving this position to having a successful private practice. We need someone to fulfill the position of commonwealth’s attorney to its fullest and that someone is Ed Vaughn. My own independent research on Ed Vaughn indicates that he has an outstanding legal career beginning as a prosecutor in the City of Richmond. Hanover needs a commonwealth’s attorney with the experience and leadership to handle tough cases in court. The commonwealth’s attorney serves every citizen in Hanover and is responsible for upholding the rule of law in court and to represent our law enforcement. Finally, I want to ask why Trip Chalkley won’t have a candidates’ forum with Ed Vaughn. I mentioned this last year with the Cantor-Brat race. Why do incumbents feel they are immune to having a discussion in front of the public with their opponents? The candidates for commonwealth’s attorney in Henrico took part in a forum a few weeks ago at the Henrico GOP. I believe the citizens of Hanover are entitled to hear from the two candidates for

L-DHS takes first in competition MECHANICSVILLE -Three eleventh grade Lee-Davis High School DECA students recently placed first at the 2015 international DECA competition in Orlando, Florida. Nick Baldwin, Trevor Heath and Jacob Johnson took top honors in the “Creative Marketing Project” category. This is the first international DECA win for Hanover County Public Schools. They were accompanied by their DECA advisor, Donna Roush, who serves as the LDHS career and technical education department chair, as well as the marketing coordinator. Over 18,000 students from across the country competed in the annual event. The students won the competition by assisting a local nonprofit organization, Scattered Stitches, with a marketing plan. handmade crafts and financial support to “organizations challenged with the care and counseling of individuals and families touched by financial, emotional or physical hardship.” The students focused on increasing brand awareness, improving volunteer recruitment, and creating new prod-

ucts. Their efforts led to the development of a more robust social media strategy, the recruitment of approximately 40 new volunteers, and the creation of new products for the homeless and fire victims. They also pioneered the creation of a bear building kit to better assist volunteers with assembly process and increased

production. “This project was an amazing opportunity for all the students in the marketing program at Lee-Davis to practice the marketing skills they have learned in the classroom. Many students helped with the research for Scattered Stitches. We also had a Community Service project with Scattered Stitches that placed first in the state competition. Those project leaders, Sam Hanny and Madison Godsey, worked very closely with the Creative Marketing project leaders. This collaboration of the two groups made this a unique year for Lee-Davis DECA,” Roush said. DECA is an international organization that is dedicated to preparing “emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management” to high school and college students. There are approximately 200,000 members at 3,500 high schools in the U.S. Information submitted by Chris R. Whitley, Hanover County Public Schools public information officer.

this office in an open discussion. It’s a bad sign when the incumbent doesn’t feel the need to do so. It shows a lack of interest of the people and not themselves. If you feel the same way I do and want a commonwealth’s attorney who will represent the county to the fullest, let your vote say so on June 9. Dalton T. Luffey Mechanicsville

Support more candidates This year we are having a rare event in Hanover County. We have a contest county-wide election. I am referring to the contest between R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III and Ed Vaughn for the office of commonwealth’s attorney. In a democracy nothing is as undemocratic as an uncontested election. As a strong supporter of term limits, I am always sad to go and vote and

Chalkley endorsed Hanover County faces a very critical situation in the June 9 Republican Primary for the office of commonwealth’s attorney.

The incumbent, R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III, has served Hanover County faithfully and efficiently since 2008. His challenger in the primary, a former holder of that same office, was defeated for re-election in 1999. Later in 2007, the same challenger ran, unsuccessfully, as a “write-in candidate” for the office of commonwealth’s attorney in Surry County while still living in Hanover County. Chalkley has served citizens of Hanover County consistently in his role in the criminal justice system with the dignity and integrity befitting this office. “Trip” Chalkley has earned the respect and confidence from law enforcement as well as the public and deserves to remain in office. There should be no question of integrity concerning Hanover’s chief prosecutor and Trip continues to bring this to us on a daily basis. I would urge those who plan to vote in this primary in June to support Chalkley see LETTERS, pg. 26

save every dollar we can. We have a clear choice between two well qualified candidates this year. Supporters of term limits and those who like to save money as well as those who believe we just need a change are urged to vote in this June 9 primary. Every Tea Party member is aware how difficult it is to find a qualified candidate willing to run against an established officeholder. A qualified challenger should be supported. When a qualified challenger receives support it makes recruiting candidates much easier. There are a lot of good people out there that want us to run. All they need is support. Larnie C. see only one name on the ballot for an important office. Any supporter of term limits should be happy to have this chance to express their opinion. Anyone that believes political leaders are going to improve term limits is living in a dream world. In the commonwealth’s attorney’s race we have two very well qualified candidates with very different management styles. Chalkley does not personally prosecute any cases. He delegates cases to assistants. At any time there may be as many as seven assistants. Apparently these assistants handle the entire caseload. Vaughn says he will prosecute cases himself. Vaughn does not believe Hanover needs seven assistant prosecutors. Vaughn believes the office of commonwealth’s attorney can be run far more efficiently if the commonwealth’s attorney actually prosecutes cases. There is a high degree of probability Vaughn is correct. If Vaughn is correct, the cost savings could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. These days we need to

of the June 3rd Assault (tour starts at Confederate turnout along park tour road). 2:30 p.m. – Picking Up the Pieces: Hanover County Civilians and the Aftermath of War (tour starts at Garthright House). In the spring of 1864, the Union and Confederate armies clashed in a series of battles from Fredericksburg to just north of Richmond. The first Union troops arrived at Cold Harbor on May 31.

Believing that Lee’s army was vulnerable, Grant repeatedly launched assaults. After four consecutive days of heavy fighting, followed by nine more days of sharpshooting and entrenching, he marched his men south toward Petersburg. Since then, Cold Harbor has become one of the memorable places of the Civil War, its name forever associated with carnage and trench warfare. Over the course of nearly two weeks at Cold Harbor the

Federal army lost more than 13,000 men; Confederate casualties are estimated at approximately 5,000. The biggest difference? We move them from just surviving in their current situation to thriving at the Y

The Patrick Henry YMCA is

If the local Y is able to garner enough votes to make it into the top 40, it would be the first YMCA nationwide to receive this specific grant from State Farm, Delvin said. Hanover Tavern Foundation just completed its annual spring field trips, hosting more than 1,500 private and public school children during the two-week program. This was the largest enrollment to date with students from City of Fredericksburg, City of Richmond, Hanover County, Henrico County, Goochland County and Spotsylvania County. “Hanover Tavern: History in the Heart of Virginia,” the fourth grade Virginia Standards of Learningbased history field trip program, addresses Virginia history from the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary War and through the Civil War era for school children in the entire central Virginia area. During the field trip, students move through numerous learning stations located at the historic Courthouse and Tavern, interacting with fascinating living history characters. Laney Owen, Cornelia Brower, Kaitlyn Mason and Chloe Bavin also won the 3,200 relay – setting a meet record of their own in the process. On the field side, Zaliah Carey and Carly Feyerabend won the long jump and high jump, respectively. Lee-Davis’ Olivia Tuck won

the girls discus. On the boys side, LeeDavis had just one winner – its 400-meter relay team of Blake Stattelman, D.J. Petty, J.J. Jordan and John Everett. But they had plenty of athletes doing well enough to score. “We had a lot of kids con-

tribute, which was special,” said Lee-Davis head coach Neil Mathews. “It’s a year after we lost a lot of kids to graduation, and a new group has stepped to the forefront – but they did it as a group, in numbers. No one really came out and had that monster day.”

The Confederates finished with 130 points, followed by Douglas Freeman with 110.66, Deep Run with 90 and Hermitage with 86.5. Atlee was fifth with 74.5 points, followed by Highland Springs (66.33), Mills Godwin (54) and Henrico (47). Atlee’s Austin Cannon won two events, the shot put and the discus, setting a meet record in the latter event. Midlothian dominated Conference 20, winning both the boys and girls titles, while Hanover’s boys finished fifth and the Hawk girls finished fourth. Hanover coach Lauren Hopper was pleased with the young Hawks – the majority of the team is freshmen and sophomores – performance. “I feel pretty happy. There were a lot of [personal records] across the board,” Hopper said. “That’s what we had been preparing them for and that’s what they did and I’m really proud of them.” On the boys side, Hawk Jeremy Davis won the triple jump, setting a meet record in the process. Jimmy Taylor won the discus and Jonathan Glore won the pole vault. On the girls side, Carter Unger won the pole vault with another meet-record performance. Ayer, Chapman help Atlee overcome C-feds By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee pitcher Brett Ayer tends start slow. But he often finishes strong. The left-hander was exceptionally strong Tuesday night. After giving up a run to visiting Lee-Davis in the first inning, Ayer kept the Confederates from scoring thereafter, eventually picking up offensive support from his Raiders in leading Atlee to a 6-1 Conference 11 victory. “It’s all about getting through that first inning,” Ayer said. “Because once I get past there it’s usually an easy ride for me.” This was his first complete game this season. “I was really doing a good job of hitting my spots,” Ayer said. “I was moving inside/out, keeping them off-balance with the off-speed.”

runners – two at first base and one at second – and caught a line drive. Ayer also got plenty of offensive support from his teammates. The Raiders finished with 10 hits, two each for Brad Chapman, Brandon Crosby and Rashaard Harris. Crosby scored two runs and knocked in another with a triple in the fourth inning. Chapman, whose first hit was a double, knocked in three runs – including driving Crosby home with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. “I was just trying to go hit for the team,” Chapman said. “It just happened to be that it was a good night – a double and home run – just a good night. I was seeing the ball well. inning. He scored on a groundout by first baseman Justin Sorokowski. Right fielder Canon Lambert walked and catcher Kevin France singled, but Lambert was thrown out trying to steal second and France was stranded when third baseman Joseph Burns struck out to end the inning. The Confederates managed just four baserunners the rest of the game, and two of those were thrown out on steal attempts or in rundowns. “There’s a lot of adjectives to describe how we played,” said Lee-Davis head coach Kenny Lewis. “The flip to that is, Atlee played a very good game. If pitching, defense and timely hitting is the recipe for success, we didn’t even come close to doing any of that. They did all three.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Kannewurf heads to Hawaiian sunset By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee athletic director Dave Kannewurf must have gotten tired of Virginia weather. Kannewurf, who has been at the helm of the Raiders’ athletic department the last decade, wraps up his tenure there today. Tomorrow he and his wife boards a flight to a new life in a much different climate – the tropical environs of Hawaii. On June 1, Kannewurf takes over as athletic director of Le Jardin Academy in Kailua, on the windward side – or “nice beach side,” as Kannewurf describes it – of Oahu. Kannewurf said he and his

wife had been planning on Hawaii as a retirement option, but that plan changed over time. “We talked over the last summer and just decided that if there was an opportunity for us to give back to the people over there that it would be really nice to do that,” Kannewurf said. “I felt like if there was an opportunity at a high school, if I could be of any help, what better way to give back to a culture that has so much to offer.” Kannewurf ’s friends and colleagues say he leaves a tremendous legacy in Hanover County as a long-time coach and athletic director. “Dave has been a perfect fit for Atlee High School and

what he has done for that whole Raider Nation,” said his former colleague at Hanover High School, Bob Stratton. Stratton said that Kannewurf brought stability to the athletic director position – which had had quite a bit of turnover in the few years before he took the helm there. “Because of that stability, it allowed all of the teams to grow,” Stratton said. Kannewurf had experience growing programs before arriving at Atlee, said Neil Mathews, who succeeded Kannewurf as head cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Lee-Davis. “The program that he left was in good shape. It was on

the rise,” Mathews said. “I didn’t have to worry about anything. Everything was there for me. The program was built and I just tried to keep building on the foundation that he laid there.” Kannewurf was an influence on the Confederates’ current athletic director, Tripp Metzger. “I think it was my sophomore year at Lee-Davis, which would be 1997, he was my computer concepts teacher,” Metzger said. Metzger has an arguably closer role model in the athletic director world – his father, Clyde Metzger is AD at Deep Run – but said Kannewurf has been a huge influence.

Hanover’s Palmer advances to region tournament By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – In court terms, Hanover pleaded no contest in its first two team matchups with Midlothian this season. Wednesday’s Conference 20 singles championship proved to be different as the Hawks’ Zach Palmer went the distance, battling three tight sets before falling 6-4, 46, 6-3 to Midlothian’s Matthew Cousins. Cousins took down Palmer, the Hawks’ scrappy No. 1, in quick straight sets in their previous two meetings this season. “I knew he was going to come out with some fire today,” Cousins said. “I knew I was going to be tested and I was.” After a back-and-forth first

set, Cousins held at 5-4 behind three service winners to close out the set. Palmer responded by taking a 3-0 lead in the second set, a lead he would hold onto, sending the match to a deciding third set.

“I had kind of slipped into playing the way he wanted me to play in the second set,” Cousins said. “I just had to go back to what I’m best at which is dictating play.” The match was knotted at 33 in the third set before Cousins combined winners of his own with Palmer errors to take the set and the match 6-3. Still, Palmer was pleased with his performance. “I think I hit the ball a lot more solid than I had in the past,” he said. “A lot was working today.” In the quarterfinal, Palmer defeated Midlothian’s No. 2 Kael Rison in dominating fashion, ousting the Trojan sophomore 6-1, 6-0. “I knew that was going to be a tough match and would prob-

ably decide if I was going to get into the championship match,” Palmer said. Elsewhere, in the Conference 20 girls’ tournament, Caroline Hare made a semifinal appearance. She was defeated by Midlothian’s Stephanie Olson, the eventual girls singles champion, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Atlee’s Jay Feyerabend and James Henderson reached the

Conference 11 doubles semifinal. By advancing to the championship, Palmer earned a spot in the Region 4A South tournament. The Hawks also advance to the regional playoffs with a runner-up finish in the Conference 20 team tournament. Both Hanover’s girls and boys teams played their coun-

terparts at Nansemond River in the Region 4A South quarterfinals Monday. Midlothian, one of the state title favorites, hosted the boys and girls teams from Lakeland Monday. “Hopefully we can get through and see Midlothian again and have another shot at them,” Palmer said. took over for the Hawks after Stratton retired from Hanover County Public Schools and took a job at Steward School two years ago. “Anytime that I have a question about anything that goes on in Hanover County, Dave’s the first person I go to. He talks me through the situation. If I need something, he provides it.” While Kannewurf will be

working almost as soon as he arrives in Hawaii, he does plan to find time to enjoy his new surroundings – such as by ocean kayaking. “It’s very relaxing,” Kannewurf said. “You get to see the land from a view that you don’t normally get to see.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
