Entertainment Hobby becomes a real train town taking center Bill McDaniel has been detailed-oriented with his expansive model set stage at festival By Meredith Rigsby News Editor
MECHANICSVILLE – The Hanover Tomato is known for its great tomatoes, but the entertainment lineup also attracts the crowds. The E.J. Wade Foundation and Audience of One Productions is again providing the entertainment stage and display that serves as the focal point of the Hanover Tomato Festival for many throughout the day. With a limited amount of shaded areas and seating, those planning to attend are invited to come prepared if they plan to spend the afternoon relaxing by the stage. Kicking off the event at 9 a.m. will be the Hanover Concert Band, followed by the festival opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., attendees can
ECHANICSVILLE — It all started back in 1960 when Bill McDaniel, now CEO of L&M Carpet One in Mechanicsville, cracked his neck in college during a driving accident in Virginia Beach. While he was healing he couldn’t move around and do very much so he got into building and painting model cars. Over the years, McDaniel kept up this hobby, but when his daughter got married and moved all of her stuff out of the storage attic, he wasted no time transforming the room into an area that could house a model train set. He expanded on his talent for building model cars and began constructing and painting a model train set as

you the truth,” he said. “I just saw the empty room and it was an ideal space for it.” Today, the train set fills

Gary Akseraylian, owner of Gary’s Shoe Repair on Mechanicsville Turnpike, is celebrating almost 30 years in business. The Beirut, Lebanon-born Akseraylian is an example of achieving “The American Dream.”
Gary’s Shoe Repair owner is living ‘The American Dream’ By Meredith Rigsby News Editor ECHANICSVILLE — Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Gary Akseraylian, owner of Gary’s Shoe Repair at 7090 Mechanicsville Tpk. in Mechanicsville, came to America with his family in 1974 and became a U.S. citizen in 1977. When he first arrived in the U.S., Akseraylian held a variety of jobs, including serving as manager of the shoe department at Thalhimer’s until opening his own store, Gary’s Shoe Repair, in 1986. “I was the manager of the shoe department for almost 18 years and then the company sold out so they let us have severance pay,” Akseraylian said. “I was the

lucky one because I had this craft in my hand — at the time almost 25 years — so I put up my business here in 1986 and I’ve been here ever since.” Akseraylian began working in a shoe factory in Lebanon when he was 8
years old and learned from the masters, he said. Working in the leather and shoe business is something of a family craft, according to Akseraylian. His grandfather, his greatgrandfather, his grandfather’s brothers, his father, his uncle and his brother have all worked in the leather business for many years, he said. “I’ve been in this business almost 60 years, repairing all kinds of craftsman shoes, whether they are European shoes or French shoes or local shoes — whatever needs to be done,” Akseraylian said. “And I like to help the community; they have been very supportive and loyal to me.” Having owned his own business for nearly 30 years, see GARY’S, pg. 4

Planners support 301 development HANOVER — The Hanover County Planning Commission put its stamp of approval on a mixed-use project slated for the intersection of U.S. 301 and Ashcake Road following a public hearing Thursday. Almost a dozen neighbors expressed concerns regarding the proposed plan that calls for the construction of apartments, town homes and single-family residences, coupled with business and retail space. Residents who live along the Ashcake Road corridor said the development would change the nature of the Pearson’s Corner area and increase traffic. Others expressed noise concerns, while many spoke to the threat of their rural way of life, something many said they had moved to Hanover County to obtain. The land, largely owned by the Kirby and McDougle families, is being developed by Scotchtown Partners. Lee Garman, principal county planner, said the applicant has satisfied all but three of those concerns. County planning staff recommended a left turn exit lane constructed at the entrance to the development. They also requested the project be phased so commercial and business development would keep pace with the residential aspect of the project. They also requested the multi-use construction meet requirements of connectivity. Currently, the property is divided by Totopotomy Creek and a Dominion Power easement and connected only with an asphalt-paved path. “This is an effort to attract young professionals and get them to come back to the county,” attorney Jim Theobold
said. “This is the group we try so hard to retain or to attract back to our county. It allows graduates to stay in their communities,” the developers’ representative said. The projected plan envisioned retail and commercial development tastefully blended along U.S. 301. “We have doubled the amount of commercial that

will be required, so that will pay for the sewer extension that is required,” he said. “At full buildout, we believe this development could generate over $1 million dollars in tax revenue,” Theobold said. “We believe we have met the county’s concerns. We have a little disagreement on the phasing plan,” Theobold said as he requested approval. “The only remaining issue is whether the phasing plan offered is sufficient,” planning director David Maloney said. Theobold explained that equal proportional phasing of commercial and residential development is unrealistic. “You have to match the lending with what’s on the ground,” he said. “It’s a different world out here and we know what the formula needs to be. We want to get the rooftops in and we know the retail will be there,”
Theobold said. But neighbors were not convinced. “There goes my sunrises over the field,” said Ann Gerald. “It breaks my heart. There’s too much growth in Hanover.” John Ramsey said there is vacant retail space near the proposed project. “I question the need for more commercial space, and I’m concerned about the increased traffic.” The concern over rural preservation was dominant among those who spoke in opposition to the project. Maloney said the project is located within the Suburban Service Area, a designated zone for development and residential growth. He said placing 70 percent of future development in the 22 percent of county land SSA allows the county to maintain its rural nature. Commissioner Randy Whittaker said he grew up along U.S. 301. “I think this is the quality we need.” William Pageant moved for a recommendation of approval, stating “the developer has addressed the concerns. This is located within the SSA and that’s where we are going to put the growth.” Chairman Larry Leadbetter agreed that most of the concerns had been addressed but could not get past the connectivity issue, and based his nay vote on that single issue. The chairman’s vote was the only dissenting ballot cast. In other issues, the commission also recommended approval of a rezoning request for a parcel located on U.S. 1 near Cedar Lane. Under the county’s new land use policy, landowners can seek rezoning to enhance their property’s attractiveness to potential developers while still enjoying the benefits of
lowered tax rates of the land use program. The area is designated for future business in the county’s Comprehensive Plan, but the developer requested M-2 industrial zoning that would allow some manufacturing on the site. Neighbors of the Elmont Woods subdivision said the property backs up to their neighborhood and expressed concerns over noise and traffic. The development has three proposed entrances on Cedar Lane. Manyhomeownerssaidthey thought the Comprehensive Plan clearly protected them from such development and questioned the developer’s

Single-vehicle crash claims King William man Staff Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – A 37-year-old King William County man was killed last Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash on Mechanicsville Turnpike. According to Sgt. Terry Sullivan of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, the victim was identified as Brian Mihalcoe
of Manqin. Sullivan said Mihalcoe was driving a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck that was traveling west, left the right side of the road and struck a tree. The fatality took place around 3:15 p.m. in the area of Thunderbird Lane. A citizen witnessed the wreck and contacted emergency responders.
Sullivan said Mihalcoe was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. According to Sullivan, investigators are still collecting information to determine the circumstances that led to the incident. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Brian Mihalcoe,” Sullivan said on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff.

The boot was a $1,500 pair of boots,” Akseraylian said. “So he came by Monday almost crying. So I had to take them [the shoes] apart [to fix them] because I was a shoemaker before I was a shoe repairman.” Akseraylian sells custommade python skin, snake skin, ostrich skin and elephant

Akseraylian’s shoe repair store is closed on the weekends and open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, as he prepares for retirement in the coming years, Akseraylian said he plans to change his schedule and open the shop only Monday through Thursday beginning in 2016 and continuing through 2017.
“I’ve been here, like I said, 30 years and very successful and I hate to leave — but you can’t work forever,” Akseraylian said. “I have served the community very well and I’m proud that I have served the community of Hanover because they have been very nice to me and are very supportive.” Though he could not have survived, and thrived, without the community’s support, Akseraylian, an immigrant from Lebanon, has truly achieved “The American Dream.”

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
Goodbye to a class act Hanover County has been served well the last four years with Dr. Jamelle S. Wilson leading the public school system. She was mentored and groomed by Dr. Stewart D. Roberson to succeed him and he should be proud of the job she has done for the division. Wilson has been a friend to The Local — always accessible and gracious in arranging her schedule to suit our needs to accommodate you, our readers. Some could say she’s moving on to bigger and better things. And I suppose that’s true — she is becoming dean of one of the schools at the University of Richmond. Yes, that’s impressive and she deserves this opportunity. Throughout her tenure, she has maintained a devotion to the students — and being in the classroom remains one of her first loves when talking about her experiences in education. We first met when she was assistant superintendent of instructional leadership and each encounter has shown a genuine concern for the future of the students. Dr. Wilson and her husband are raising their sons here and they will remain residents of Hanover County. Like you and me, it is home. As she prepares to walk down that hallway at the school board office for the final time on Tuesday, she has tried to do what she thought best — and always with the students at the forefront. Having had the privilege to spend casual conversation time with her, I’m confident Dr. Jamelle S. Wilson mostly wants to be known as a Christian, wife, mother and educator. She has served us well. Congratulations on this next chapter. We are confident she will do great things in her new position.
School board appointments With nine candidates seeking seats for the Beaverdam (five) and Henry (four) districts on the Hanover County School Board, Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley and Sean Davis, Beaverdam and Henry members, respectively, on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, will be making those appointments at this evening’s regular meeting. This is where I’d normally voice my support for an elected school board, but, since it’s a moot point at this time, I’ll just wait to see what transpires later today. Melody Kinser

By the way, we had an election By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist There was an election two weeks ago in the metro Richmond area; a primary to decide who will appear on the ballot in November. You might have missed it. According to voting statistics, it’s a pretty sure bet you did as less than 10 percent of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot. Apparently some voters think primaries aren’t important and only a dry run for the real elections in November. Sadly, that’s not true. With a gerrymandered political map, the primary elections in Virginia decide who will ultimately serve in the General Assembly. That’s a sad reality of a broken system that redraws vot-
ing precinct lines according to political whims every decade. It’s a tradition that has gained some national attention lately as the commonwealth has been gently nudged by the Justice Department to redraw some lines that crossed even the ill-defined limits of redistricting. While the oddly-shaped districts might mean political success for whichever party holds the gavel when the new lines are drawn every 10 years, it also results in primaries that are not competitive and elections whose outcomes are foregone conclusions — or maybe not. Conservative Stephen Martin has served Chesterfield County in the Virginia Senate since 1994, but dismally low turnout numbers contrib-
uted to his challenger’s ability to win the primary. It could have been worse, but many incumbents did not face primary battles and face certain re-election in the fall. Citizens get the government they demand, and not participating in elections is the right of every citizen but the results are sometimes less than ideal. We often speak of the sacrifices made by American servicemen throughout the centuries in an effort to protect our rights here at home. Voting is one of those rights that should never be taken for granted. As Americans, we need to re-evaluate the right to vote and take it much see ELECTION, pg. 8

interpretation of the plan. Andy Condlin, representing the developer, said the project hopes to attract clean industrial, flex and office space users. There is no potential client at this time, but the owner wants to utilize the new land use policy to attract more interest in his 120 acres along Route 1. The neighbors said they did not have concerns with the portion of the property that fronts Route 1, but were worried about the second par-

The once deferred project agreed to a list of proffers that included no outside storage, all roads and parking areas be paved and no reconstructed buildings be allowed. Commissioner Ashley Peace questioned how the zoning could transform so drastically. “I’m still wondering how we got from Planned business to M-2,” she questioned before voicing a no vote on the proposal. The motion to recommend approval passed with a 5-2 vote. Both cases now proceed to the Board of Supervisors for final consideration.

Sadly, some Americans have drawn the conclusion that the system is rigged and one man’s vote can’t make a difference. That’s taking the easy way out if we truly believe democracy is not better than the citizens it serves and the freedoms it protects. The ultimate result of primaries that do not attract interest or voters and ger-
rymandered districts are a government that is guided by the few with the loudest voices. Choices made by less than 10 percent of voters often do not reflect the interests or views of the communities they serve. Summer office hours are noon to 6 p.m. Additional times or changes will be posted to Radler’s campaign Facebook page. The 55th District spans Hanover, Caroline and Spotsylvania counties. with the move. Republic National could load only one truck at a time at the former facility in eastern Henrico. It can now load six at a time. That means it is shipping on average 1,100 more cases of wine per hour than it could in previous years. Suppliers who partner with Republic National say the capacity increase will be beneficial for their businesses. “You always had to keep track and make sure you had wine coming across the country on time,” said a representative from California-based Bronco Wine Co. “If we missed something, we were out of stock for a few days. ... But since moving, they’ve been up and up. They’ve got kinks worked out, inventory worked out and operations are flying as far as I can tell.” Archuleta said the purpose of the transition was not solely to satisfy the current needs of
the company and its customers. “We’re built to accommodate our business now, but more importantly, we’re built to handle the capacity for future growth — for the great economic climate that Virginia has,” he said. Ashland officials welcomed Republic National to their town. “It’s just a boom for the economic development of the town,” said Mayor George Spagna, who attended the grand opening. “We’re looking for distribution kinds of businesses. They’re clean and won’t have a big impact on the schools.” Town Manager Charles Hartgrove said Ashland will benefit financially from real estate and personal property taxes, but most important, it will benefit from having a major employer. Republic National employs about 350 people statewide, including more than 100 at the new location.

he said. “They actually have paint colors in the train hobby shop you can go buy ‘grim’ and ‘dirt’ and ‘dust’ — because you don’t see any shiny trains, do you? They’re all dirty and ugly,” McDaniel said. Although the elaborate train set and accompanying town has taken McDaniel countless hours to create, he and his wife will soon be moving to a new home. Because the train track is difficult to move without causing damage, McDaniel has decided to leave the track for the people moving in.
He intends to take the majority of the buildings and people with him to start on a new train set in his new home, but will leave the tracks and the set tables for the new homeowners. McDaniel has already begun planning for his new train set in his new home. The new space that McDaniel and his wife Jane are moving into has a twostory great room. Instead of leaving the room open, with a very high ceiling, McDaniel is having an 11-foot ceiling put in place so he can create a new train room upstairs.

ECHANICSVILLE — Working to raise money for the family of a chronically ill Hanover County girl, the Guilty Ones Motorcycle Club will be hosting a fundraiser – Answers for Annabelle — from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at Life Church at 8378 Atlee Rd. in Mechanicsville. Members are holding a fundraiser for 3-year-old Annabelle (note: no last name listed), who has a rare life-threatening chronic immune system disease called Eosinophilic Esophagitis. Eosinophilic Esophagitis, among other things, prevents the carrier from eating and swallowing through the esophagus. Annabelle is forced to eat through a feeding tube due to her body painfully rejecting food proteins.
Without further treatment, her large and small intestine and colon and also may succumb to the disease. There are no known cures for the illness, only a prognosis of long-term painful and costly options. The Guilty Ones organization has chosen Annabelle as a recipient for their annual “Impact a Child” charity event that will assist Annabelle and her family with the expenses associated with this devastating disease. Members had difficulty in securing a location for the fundraiser. Buddy Thompson, pastor at Life Church, said, “Life Church has always been a place where the hurting and the broken can find healing.” “When I heard about Annabelle,” Thompson said, “I just knew that we had to be part of helping her make the much needed trip to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where she can be cared for by doctors who specialize in this dreadful illness.”

Joshua Britton, Hyun Lee, Lynn Saunders, Lydia Storey and Noah Britton recently took part in Grace Christian School’s annual KINGS Walk-a-thon. Students joined fellow classmates and teachers in walking around the track as many times as they were able in one hour’s time to raise money for the school’s first van. The school raised over $10,000. This year, GCS partnered with the Mechanicsville nonprofit ministry, Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions (MCEF). MCEF is comprised of several Mechanicsville churches who each coordinate a service ministry to those in need. The mission of MCEF is to help families in Mechanicsville with essential bills, food, and clothing so they can stay in their homes, keep their utilities on, and have food on their tables. Students at GCS presented a check for $925.00, a percentage of the school’s earnings to MCEF to support their efforts in our community. The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Piper, 71943, is an 8-year-old female chow. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Piper has been at the shelter for about a month. She gets along well with people and other dogs. She has been an inside dog most of her life. She also seems to be housebroken. Penny, 395746, is a 2-year-old female shepherd/pitbull. She has been spayed and has received her first set of vaccines. She also is Heartworm test negative. Penny was originally adopted in April but had to be returned. She has a very playful personality and lots of energy. She gets along very well with other dogs. She loves to play with them. Penny also loves long walks on a leash. She might do well with someone who loves to get out and walk. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://hanovercounty. gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.

why we are here to serve in this important ministry, that’s incredible.” After receiving their diplomas, the newly-graduated students assembled into a circle to participate in their last SEARCH huddle. who helped torpedo a popular Civil War festival here in Mechanicsville a few years ago. And she pushed for the showing of a controversial film to Hanover County school children that tried to find the reasons for 9/11 and why the Muslim terrorists hate us so much. As if we need to help find an excuse for why these Islamic savages murdered over 3,000 of our citizens on 9/11 or why they are now beheading little children and slaughtering innocent Christians. Even a number of the members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors questioned the illogical reasoning behind showing such a film. Dr. Wilson is leaving to go to the University of Richmond, one of the many higher insti-
tutions of learning infected with the disease of liberalism. The move should suit both Dr. Wilson and Hanover County well. Let’s hope the Hanover County Boar d of Supervisors does its job better this time and gives us a good conservative superintendent, one who is more interested in educating our children than in pushing a liberal agenda. And if they don’t do a good job, hopefully they will meet the same fate as Eric Cantor, another darling of the liberal media! Raymond C. Germeroth Mechanicsville
to voice our support for reappointing Earl Hunter (Henry District) and John Axselle (Beaverdam) to the Hanover County Public Schools Board. Public schools systems are complex, governed by many laws, regulations, and policies. One of the most important functions Hanover County’s School Board will be tasked with is the selection of a superintendent. Out of seven seats on the Hanover County School Board, only three are currently filled by members who went through the superintendent selection process only four short years ago. Two of those three members with knowledge and experience with this are Mr. Hunter and Mr. Axselle. Beyond this, these two gentlemen bring a wealth of knowledge and per-
spective on other matters concerning our schools. In the case of Mr. Hunter, he has ably served on the board for over 20 years, is past president of the Virginia School Boards Association, and served on numerous committees, all with the goal of advancing the quality of Hanover schools. Mr. Hunter displays thoughtful and knowledgeable leadership in school system management and is respected by constituents, teachers, and administrators alike. While other candidates may have business experience and may be dedicated school volunteers, Friends of Hanover Schools endorses Mr. Hunter because of his school board experience, proven record and demonstrated qualities. Our students and schools should continue to reap the benefits of

PHHS student wins FOX PSA contest Future firefighter? Patrick Henry High School senior Chesdin Harrington was named the 2015 winner of FOX Richmond’s Lights, Camera, Take Action public service announcement (PSA) contest. Harrington created the award-winning 20-second spot in his Mass Communications class that warned of the dangers of substance abuse. The spot, “Fill Your Bag,” can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=5tZJDgiksEM. “The most fun part of doing the spot was coming up with the idea,” said Harrington. “This is my first year entering the contest. It’s one of the biggest achievements that I have had. I was not sure that mine was going to come out on top, so I was definitely surprised.”
“It was very exciting to see that Chesdin won,” said Patrick Henry High School Mass Communications teacher Michelle Gary. “All of the students who produced spots gave the judges a nice variety. We do contests like this one to (help teach students to) convey a clear and concise messages.” Gary’s students finished strong in the PSA contest and represented eight of the nine finalists. Harrington’s award-winning spot aired during the April 29 episode of “American Idol.” As the grand prize winner, he also won a tablet computer. ASHLAND — July signifies the opening of canning season. Canning, the old practice of preserving fruits and vegetables has traditionally been done in the home. Hanover County has a Cannery that also operates as a commercial kitchen where residents, non-residents and commercial customers may process their produce on commercial-grade equipment. The Hanover County Cannery will open Wednesday, July 1, and will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout July and August. The Cannery will be open on Saturdays in September and October (except Oct. 3.)

Historical Society, Ashland Museum partner to offer lecture “Decision for War: 1914” will be presented as part of
a four-part series of lectures presented annually by the
Hanover County Historical Society. This program is a joint presentation with the Ashland Museum. Michael D. Krause, PhD, will address the groups at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at the Ashland Library at 201 S. Railroad Ave. in Ashland on the 101st anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
He will explore the questions: How could the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, ignite a World War? What events taken together plunged the world into one of the costliest wars in human history? A much shortened version of Krause’s curriculum vitae lists a background of military service in two wars on four
continents and involvement as chief logistical planner during the Gulf War. As an educator, Krause taught at several military colleges, including the United States Military Academy at West Point. Krause is a graduate of Norwich University and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Post 175 begins season with welcome experience By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – The American Legion taketh, and the American Legion giveth back. At the end of last year’s Legion baseball season, Mechanicsville Post 175 said goodbye to a pool of talented seniors who, because of a rules change that went into effect last season, would not be eligible to play this season – a break from past practice. That meant that Post 175 would lose a lot of talent. But the Legion had a change of heart. Those who played on an American Legion team their senior year, and who have a birthday after January of the current season, can return as first-year college players had in the past. Because of Legion’s change of plans, infielders Josh Lam, Andrew Sergent and Josh
Shepherd; outfielders Haiden Lamb and Cody Thompson; and pitcher Joey Pride were able to return to Post 175’s fold. “We’re fortunate to have those guys come back. They’re a big boost four our team,” said Post 175 manager Tyler Kane. “They’re going to be, obviously, crucial for what we do late in the year.” Initially, Post 175 was going to also get former Hanover infielder Trevor Denton back, but Denton signed as a catcher with the Harrisonburg Turks of the Valley League just before the Legion season was to begin. “He’s trying to get into a four-year college after this summer,” Kane said. “He got a spot in the Valley League and decided to take it. Trevor’s a great player. He’s going to be missed.” Post 175 also gets a pool of talented newcomers to its roster, such as infielders Brandon Crosby and Stephen Hurd;
pitchers Brett Ayer, Justin Bishop, Reeves Lowry, Hayden Moore, Joseph Neagle and Jacob Weis; and outfielders Dylan Coleman, Andrew Simpson and Elliott Sledd. “They’re all very good payers,” Kane said. “It’s a new look. It’s a new team. It’s obviously not the same group as last year, but I think we have experience, because we have a lot of seniors and a lot of kids returning from college.” Kane said a key to picking a roster is finding players with the right amount of team spirit as well as talent. “Our goal as a staff was not to choose the best 18,” Kane said. “We wanted to choose the right 18, and we think we’ve done that. We’ve got a lot of high-character guys, and a lot of guys that are willing to do whatever it takes for the team to help the team win.” Kane is the third manager
NASCAR testing a team effort By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor HENRICO – It’s testing season again at Richmond International Raceway. Last week, eight drivers and their crew visited the Henrico track to test tires and car configurations in preparation for the Federated Auto Parts 400 on September 11. Only one driver per race team – such as Joe Gibbs Racing – is allowed at a track during testing, which places great responsibility on the selected drive to obtain results that will benefit all other members of one’s team. “While you’d like to go and post the fastest time, the biggest thing is to find things, adjustments that we can use to make our cars better – not only when we come back to Richmond,

but any short track that we run at,” said Sam Hornish Jr., driver of the No. 9 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford. “The setups are all obviously a little bit different.” Hornish said testing can be challenging in terms of getting useful results, as his Richard Petty Motorsports teammate,
Aric Almirola, in the No. 43 Ford has found out in recent sessions. “The No. 43 has came here the past couple times that there has been an opportunity to test and they didn’t feel like they were getting exactly where they wanted to be,” Hornish said. “I’m sure they would have jumped at the opportunity to come and test again but they just wanted to kind of throw some fresh blood at it and see what we could come up with to see if anything was going to be a little bit different. “I feel like we’ve made some small gains this morning ... but we still have some more work to do to get the car handling the way I’d like it to.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
in three years for Post 175. Last year, Bobby White took over for Eddie Gates. Kane was one of White’s assistants last year, and when White decided not
to return this year – he lives in Greensboro, North Carolina – Kane took over. “Just being with Bobby last year, and working with him,
he’s taught me a lot,” said Kane, who added that he and White still talk about the team. “It’s helped make this transition a lot easier.”

Raiders trounce Erie to earn home playoff two touchdowns, Daron Clark for 38 yards and two touchdowns, Herb Jones for 25 and one touchdown, and James Carter for 15 yards and a score. It has been quite a turnaround — six straight wins — for a team that was 2-4 at midseason. “We just hit our stride,” said Richmond head coach James Fuller. “Bane played well. Our line started playing better. We got Torrez [Jones] back in the secondary and things turned around.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Richmond made life difficult on the Erie Explosion Saturday night. The Raiders’ secondary intercepted Erie quarterbacks six times, returning two for touchdowns. The line sacked Erie quarterbacks eight times. The defense overall gave up a paltry 221 yards given the 70 plays the Explosion ran from scrimmage. Erie’s offense found the end zone just once as the Explosion found itself on the wrong side of a classic beatdown in a 77-8 loss to the Raiders on the final night of the 2015 Professional Indoor Football League regular season at the Richmond Coliseum Saturday night. The Raiders clinched the second seed in the four-team PIFL playoffs. They will host thirdseed Nashville, a 57-37 winner over Trenton, in a PIFL semifinal Monday, June 29, at 7 p.m. at the Richmond Coliseum. “It feels great. We’re right back in [the playoffs],” said Richmond defensive back Maurice Thorne, who returned one interception 40 yards for a touchdown, who noted that the Raiders had missed the PIFL playoffs the past two years. “Hopefully the third time’s the charm for us. Hopefully we can get to the championship and win it this time.”

Erie quarterback Steffen Colon (10) goes down for a loss again with Richmond defensive linemen Blade Shoop (56) and Brandon Sparrow in pursuit during the first half of the Raiders’ 77-8 victory over the Explosion at the Richmond Coliseum Saturday.
Thorne shared picks with Kevin Allen, who finished with three – one of those returned 49-yards for a touchdown – and Malik Cromartie, who finished with two. Brandon Sparrow led Richmond in the sack column with four. He said the line’s emphasis was on doing whatever it needed to do to disrupt Erie’s offense. “That was the plan: get after them and knock them down, sack them, whatever we could do. Win the game, you know,”

Sparrow said. “Coach [Billy Jarvis], he just told me to be quick, get in the gap, get in the backfield and tear things up. So I took that to mind and just executed.” Sparrow spread sack opportunities around, too. If one defensive lineman couldn’t catch up with Erie quarterbacks Mason Espinosa and Steffen Colon, another one usually did. Blade Shoop had two more sacks for Richmond, and Alex Johnson and Brandon Robinson each had one.
The defensive backs had their share of knockdowns in addition to interceptions, slapping away a host of Explosion passes. Espinosa, Erie’s starter who was knocked out of the game, and Colon completed just 22 of 58 passes on the evening. Ironically, Richmond’s staunch defense led to Erie’s only score of the second half. After the Raiders stopped Erie at the Richmond 3-yard line, Raiders quarterback Jonathan Bane had little room to maneuver, and, after two incomplete
passes, was sacked at the back of the end zone for a safety. Otherwise, Bane and the Richmond offense were almost unstoppable, picking up 200 yards on 20 plays. Bane completed 10 passes in 13 attempts for 88 yards and three touchdowns. Phil Konopka came in and was perfect, completing 6 of 6 passes for 100 yards and three more touchdowns. Five Raiders receivers caught two passes apiece: Ron Davis for 58 yards and one touchdown, Robert Holland for 52 yards and

Shepherd; outfielders Haiden Lamb and Cody Thompson; and pitcher Joey Pride were able to return to Post 175’s fold. “We’re fortunate to have those guys come back. They’re a big boost four our team,” said Post 175 manager Tyler Kane. “They’re going to be, obviously, crucial for what we do late in the year.” Initially, Post 175 was going to also get former Hanover infielder Trevor Denton back, but Denton signed as a catcher with the Harrisonburg Turks of the Valley League just before the Legion season was to begin. “He’s trying to get into a four-year college after this summer,” Kane said. “He got a spot in the Valley League and decided to take it. Trevor’s a great player. He’s going to be missed.” Post 175 also gets a pool of talented newcomers to its roster, such as infielders Brandon Crosby and Stephen Hurd;
pitchers Brett Ayer, Justin Bishop, Reeves Lowry, Hayden Moore, Joseph Neagle and Jacob Weis; and outfielders Dylan Coleman, Andrew Simpson and Elliott Sledd.

Burkwood, Ashland begin busy 2015 GRAL season By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Burkwood Swim and Racquet Club was awash in swimmers and parents Wednesday night as the Greater Richmond Aquatic League season got in full swing with a slate of swim meets across the Richmond metropolitan area. The Ashland Barracudas visited the Burkwood Buccaneers in a GRAL Division 1 meet. By the time it was over, Burkwood had scored 747 points to Ashland’s 453, but point totals were far from the main point of the competitions, especially considering the age range of the
competitors – from 4-years-old to 18-year-olds. “Obviously, you’re going to coach little kids very, very differently. It’s almost like speaking a different language to them,” said Ashland head coach Kevin Trent, who is a former head coach at Patrick Henry High School. “The expectations and the amount of responsibility you can place on them are obviously less than you can do for can do for the older kids.” Trent said there are expectations for all, of course, and that they try to instill those standards from the beginning. “We do expect them to know where to be, what to swim, how to carry themselves in a sports-
manlike manner,” Trent said. “That’s something that will carry up through to the oldest kids as well.” Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber, who is head coach of Atlee’s swim team, enjoys working with such a broad age range. “It’s exciting to see the kids, especially when we’ve got 4year-olds who are on the team,” Seeber said. “To watch their expressions and you’re just like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ They come out and they don’t care about their time. They’re just like, ‘I finished!’ and you say, ‘You did!’ As they get older, they get a little bit more competitive.” Burkwood had 11 quad
