Austin named Atlee Y chief By Meredith Rigsby News Editor MECHANICSVILLE — The Atlee Station Family YMCA has named Holly Austin as its new executive director, replacing Andrew Dyson, who is moving to the Goochland Family YMCA. Austin began serving in her new role on June 22, bringing 13 years of experience working with numerous YMCAs to the position. What makes the position at this YMCA location so appealing for Austin is that she, AUSTIN for the first time in her YMCA career, is able to work for the community in which she lives. “I’m really super-excited because this is my own community,” Austin said. “My husband and my daughter and I moved into Hanover about a year ago. Being at a nonprofit where you’re serving the community, it’s so awesome to be able to impact your own community.” see AUSTIN, pg. 24

A lifetime of work ends with John Talley retiring By Meredith Rigsby News Editor MECHANICSVILLE — After working for a meat company for 14½ years, John Talley, born and raised in Mechanicsville, found himself unemployed as the company transferred
from Richmond to Pennsylvania. Having always had an interest in cars, Talley then worked at a local salvage yard until securing a spot at a Mechanicsville Ford dealership, which was owned by Ted Fowler, in 1971.
HANOVER – The Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved a rezoning request that paves the way for a multiuse project on the 103 acres currently zoned A-1 at the southwest corner of the intersection of U.S. 301 and New Ashcake Road. Despite the objections of a list of residents who expressed their opposition to the proposed project, board members said the application meets county requirements and is

MECHANICSVILLE — A recent Church of Creator mission trip team harvested broccoli for needy families . . . and fellowship for the more than 30 youth and adults who participated. This year’s weeklong trip to the Northern Neck community of Tappahannock was to support Harvest of Hope. Harvest of Hope, sponsored by the national hunger relief organization, The Society of St. Andrew, partners with people of all faiths to serve together feeding the hungry. The Biblical concept of gleaning means collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they have been commercially harvested or collecting where it is not economically profitable to harvest. Since 1983, the Society of St. Andrew has salvaged fresh, nutritious produce from American farms — produce that otherwise would be left to rot — and delivered it to agencies across the nation that serve the poor. The group from Creator spent the week gleaning broccoli. Those participating agreed that their hard work throughout the heat of the
June days was well worth it. “We gleaned more than 13,000 pounds of broccoli,” said Father Bill Burk. “That equates to nearly 42,000 servings. God has been calling His people since the dawn of creation to serve one another, care for each other, love each other, we decide if we are going to answer that call or let it go to voicemail. Our parish has decided to make our answer a priority in our lives and as a Parish, we proclaimed it 42,000 times last week.” Through the group’s gleaning efforts, Northern Neck Food Bank, the Central Virginia Food Bank and a local food bank were supplied with the fresh vegetable. “It is so spiritually uplifting to participate in something like this,” said Katherine Earls. “Throughout the days, you could hear singing in the fields as we rejoiced at the good weather, our ability to serve, and the beautiful broccoli plants we were finding.” To learn more about Church of Creator’s mission activities, call 804-746-8765 or visit a Sunday morning service at 8 or 10:30 a.m. Episcopal Church of Creator is located at 7159 Mechanicsville Turnpike in Mechanicsville.

From the start, Talley was a successful car salesman, selling 44 cars in one month. After 9½ years, the Ford dealership moved to Richmond, but was unable to stay open. Talley took over the old spot where the Ford dealership used to reside in Mechanicsville. In March 1980, he purchased the sales portion of the building, and by the next year also owned the service section of the business. Eight years later, in 1988, Talley was able to build a Nissan dealership, but had plans to sell it. Following about two months of negotiations, he was able to sell the property to Victory Nissan. While he was setting up plans to sell his second property, Talley bought a third property that belonged to his cousin.

located in an area designated for development. In addition to the proposed 115 single-family homes and 131 town homes, 286 apartments are planned for Caldwell Park along with retail and other commercial space that includes a grocery store. Residents said the project would drastically alter the atmosphere of the Ashcake Road corridor and increase traffic along the two-lane road. The proposed development consists of two major portions separated by Topototomy Creek and Dominion power lines. The tracts will be connected with a walkable path connecting retail and office with single- and multi-family dwellings. Jim Theobold, an attorney representing the applicants, said the project would be
come from the individuals, some came from maybe repossession and stuff like that, but most everything I did I bought at sales.” Talley ended up selling his third dealership to Sheehy Nissan because of his age and having to battle with spinal stenosis. If he were 10 years younger he would have never sold it, he said. “I like work, I love work, I was raised on a farm and I’m a workaholic, 65 hours per week for 40 years,” Talley said. “And that’s one of the only reasons I was successful in the car business, because I worked at it so hard and stayed with it. You can’t work 40 hours a week in the car business and survive.” Although he loved working as owner and car salesman of John Talley Motors, being able to be independent also meant a great deal to Talley – it gave him the ability to run his busi-
ness they way he saw fit. “I’ve always been a very conscientious person when it comes to service for people. If I see there’s a need, and — even though sometimes I didn’t think I have to do it — I did it anyways just to please that customer and make them happy,” Talley said. “And it helped a lot with me because 65 percent of our business was return customers. And also I gave six months, 7,500-mile warranty on everything I sold.” Talley was able to retire from the business, having been a successful car dealership owner and car salesman, but he said he couldn’t have done it without the residents of Mechanicsville that have supported him throughout the years. “I want to be sure that people understand that I appreciate what they have done for me over the years,” Talley said.

resents the Chickahominy District where the proposed project is located, and said she understood the concerns of the residents. “It is our intention to maintain and preserve the rural character of Hanover County,” Kelly-Wiecek said. “I want to ensure everyone that we are watching the growth rate, but we are going to grow whether we like it or not.” Kelly-Wiecek said that managing the growth is the real challenge. “We can grow willy nilly and chop up our farmland into one- or five-acre parcels, or we can designate that growth into areas that currently have the ability to handle it,” she said as she moved for approval of the application. Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley, whose Beaverdam District adjoins the proposed site of the project, said he was concerned about traffic and joined Sean Davis, Henry District, in opposing the request, which passed by a 5-2 vote.
“I pulled the house down and built this place. And then I sold this one to the other Nissan dealership,” Talley said. “This is my actual third location, built two dealerships.” Talley gave a portion of the business to his two sons, David and Doug, but all three eventually sold the entire business to Sheehy Nissan in Mechanicsville. Both of his sons are still salesmen at John Talley Motors. Over the course of his career, Talley’s favorite part about being a car salesman was getting the cars serviced and ready to be displayed on the lot. “That’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do is just buy cars and get them ready,” Talley said. “Just about every car I’ve bought and sold, I’ve bought myself. I kept 100 cars. Most of them came from Harrisburg Auto Auction, some of them

ing residences. “The staff believes the prof-
fers meet the intents of the Planning Commission approval,” David Maloney, planning director, said. Henry District supervisor Sean Davis said he could not support the request, and indicated the unknown factor was too high in knowing what might happen on the property. “I’ve never seen anything like this. It appears to be carved out,” Davis said. “This let’s do it now and see what happens later is not the way government is supposed to work.” A number of residents spoke in opposition to the rezoning from an A-1 designation to M-2 a change they described as too drastic. Others spoke of a disruption to their neighborhood that would alter their lifestyles. Linda Holland Allen, the
daughter of property owner and applicant Richard Holland (deceased) said enhancing the property’s marketability could produce jobs and future development along the U.S. 1 corridor. “One hundred to 500 jobs could be put on this site if it was developed correctly,” Allen said. “The tax revenue to the county could be phenomenal. This property could be instrumental in increasing your tax base,” she added. Edwin Gaskin, Hanover County’s director of Economic Development, supported the application, explaining that it fits perfectly in the county’s recently endorsed strategic zoning initiative that allows landowners to retain the tax advantage of keeping their

HANOVER — Citing the Hanover County’s recently revised land use policy initiative, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved rezoning 118 acres off U.S. 1 and Cedar Lane for M-2 uses. After the Hanover County Planning Commission approved a request to rezone 118 acres on Route 1 with some limitations last month, the applicant removed the 10 acres directly adjacent to the Elmont Woods subdivision. The request utilizes the county’s new land use policy that allows landowners to rezone their property to make it more marketable to potential investors. Lee’s novel evokes memories of father
From the editor
Growth can be viewed as a slippery slope here When it comes to deciding whether to develop and grow or maintain that rural country feel, this writer does not envy the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. Members must determine what may be considered what is best in “the big picture.” So, last Wednesday, the majority of the supervisors (note the word unanimous was not used) agreed to projects that will see the construction and addition of homes and businesses. That being said, we could look at the bottom line, which is more tax dollars coming into the county. And, with additional sources of income, our renowned school system will continue to flourish and services such as law enforcement and fire-rescue will receive much-needed support. Having never resided in what would be described as “the country,” I can’t say I agree or disagree with those who value that lifestyle. This ol’ girl is a creature of convenience. Home has always been in close proximity to businesses that offer the necessities of life, in addition to entertainment choices. Just because the rural life is foreign to yours truly is by no means the opinion of many county residents. They love their open spaces and, I suppose, communing with nature. So, where is that balance? The supervisors moved forward on development projects in a couple of areas of the county (articles on pages 1 and 5). One would expect they weighed the pros and cons as they voted on what areas should see growth in the immediate future and whether some projects could be delayed for more study. It’s full steam ahead at this point. While there is a sense of sympathy for those who do not want what many simply refer to as progress in their back yard, it does come down to the funds that will benefit our county’s strengths. We have a positive reputation for welcoming new businesses and residents and certainly want to keep that moving forward. Again, it may be a slippery slope of sorts but the monies for the future hopefully will ease the transition for those who oppose development near their homes. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Older Americans are seldom recognized and today’s headlines often reflect a predominantly youthful society. When’s the last time you noted a news story that involved someone over the age of 80? That all changed this week with Nell Harper Lee’s release of a longawaited sequel to legendary masterpiece, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Who knows why Lee never attained or desired to repeat the level of acclaim that accompanied “Mockingbird,” or the generational influence it possessed for millions of Americans. It did not surprise me to learn that Atticus Finch, the central character in Lee’s first novel, is portrayed as a
racist in her latest release, “Go Set a Watchman.” Lee, along with noted author Truman Capote, grew up in rural Alabama, and the lasting influence of their childhood clearly influenced their literary pursuits. Each viewed society with a twinge of skepticism and the not-so-apparent legacy of defeat that was still evident in the South mid-20th century. I grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, in a time of immense change and tension, a time when the legacy so many of us treasured was under attack from all angles. It was a time of true awakening for a region that had long ago lost its swagger and always felt like America’s red-headed stepchild. Finch always reminded me of my
father with his quiet dignified presence and economic use of the English language. My father’s soft-spoken nature could never be confused with weakness or fear, but he did evoke a sense of quiet confidence that provided us as children with an unquestioned sense of security. He also was the product of years of racism and segregation living in a city that made no apology for the way things were. Although I’m sure he, like Finch, held racist views deep in his psyche, views never expressed in my childhood, but evident as I look back on my time with him. Truth be known you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Montgomery, or anywhere else in the South who wasn’t afflicted with a fair amount of see NOVEL, pg. 8
LETTERS | Reader Views
Responding in defense of Confederate heritage Over the decades I have had many letters published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, with a number of them awarded Correspondent of the Day and with one awarded Runner-Up Correspondent of the Year for a letter published in 2007. Although the Times-Dispatch publishes no more than a third of letters received, 80 to 90 percent of my letters have been published, making it clear that in the editor’s view I do not write junk letters. My respect for the printed word and the responsibility it incurs flows from the life of my own late father, F.X. Reardon, who was the Times-Dispatch’s first editorial cartoonist and a cartoonist there for 22 years before becoming internationally syndicated with the Chicago Sun-Times. He also was the creator of the first pantomime comic strip, a fact never disputed. My book, “Whistling Down the Halls,” available over the Internet, contains his biography and some 800 of his cartoons. I myself held a cartoonist position briefly with a short-lived Richmond paper. Although I have had a fair number of letters published in The Mechanicsville Local, I normally avoid writing letters of a too controversial nature to it, since it and other community papers usually publish letters from every Tom,
Dick and Harry, letters which too often are vicious and that would never make it into the Times-Dispatch. One writer of such letters to The Local is atheist Steve Sneed, with his latest rant published in the July 15 issue. I have often wondered why readers bother to answer his letters, since it simply gives him another opportunity to spread more poison with his replies. I might add that I admire greatly the letters of Raymond Germeroth, who courageously stands up to such bullies no matter how viciously he is attacked, while never himself getting vicious and always maintaining his dignity. see LETTERS, pg. 8

property in land use while
This one and only reference to Sneed’s letters is due to his ignorant attack on our Confederate heritage, which I also take as an attack on my 12 ancestors who fought for the South, with most wounded, with loss of limbs, with one killed, from the Seven Days Battle to Gettysburg to Cold Harbor. Six of those brave young men were part of the approximately140 cavalrymen who foiled Union Col. Ulric Dahlgren’s raid on Richmond in March 1864, which Dahlgren intended to burn to the ground, and then tracked him down and killed him. My own greatgrandfather returned from Appomattox, wounded, to his home at Old Cold Harbor, to find the property totally devastated by the Union Army. His father, the owner of the Cold Harbor property, owned no slaves but employed five free blacks, who lived on the property. Unlike the South, the North waged total war against the civilian population, burning, looting, and leaving a wide path of devastation wherever it went. A fourth of Union soldiers were recent immigrants from Europe, and the North could not have won the War without them, in spite of its otherwise overwhelming numbers. Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, assistant secretary of the United States Treasury under President Reagan and former associate editor of the Wall Street Journal wrote, in part, in a recent column: “The South was forced into war by an act of Northern aggression – an invasion of the South. The South was fighting a war of secession, a war of independence. Corrupt historians misrepresented the war as a civil war in order to cover up the North’s aggression and in order to present the war in

could be Hanover’s most marketable area of development. “It’s our current strength,” Gaskin said. Attorney Andy Condlin, representing the applicant, said the revised land use policy would increase Hanover’s list of available property for development. “Developers are looking for zoned property,” he said. “They don’t want to go through the process because they are unsure of what the process would look like and it costs time,” Condlin added. Many residents said they could support the 90-acreplus portion of the project that fronts U.S. 1, but spoke against the portion that borders their residences. “If they want to develop the 90-acre section of the property to M-2, that would be appropriate,” Elmont Woods resident Shannon Crone said. “The back 33 acres could be some sort of transitional development . . .

racism, a reflection of the community that reared them and sent them into a world where their views were not always not endorsed, but seldom scorned. So, how could a racist like Atticus Finch defend Tom Robinson in such a clearly heated racially-based trial? I suppose it’s the same innate quality that allowed my father to routinely visit poor black neighborhoods in Montgomery to distribute food. Maybe it was the same amount of integrity that moved him to pull over and help an older gentleman of color change a tire on a country road. I certainly don’t hold it against him. I’m not sure I even

In reality, all of us are a combination of values, mostly good but always flavored with a hint of bad. All of us have prejudices and preconceived judgments, some of them voluntary and some the result of the people who influenced our lives. Identity corrected Thank you very much for printing my acknowledgment of the fine work Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office deputies provide on a daily basis. I made a grievous error that I recognized quickly when the letter I wrote was printed in a recent paper. The officer who responded with Officer Danay Osborne to a road hazard with a dog on July 5, 2015, was Officer Bryan McIntee and not Seth Mahler, who I gratefully acknowledged from an earlier incident. Please, Officer McIntee, accept my apology — you did an amazing “dog whisperer” strategy with the hound on Rural Point Road on July 5, 2015, and prevented injury to the animal and a potential accident on the road. Disputing letter about Civil War Steve Sneed, I’m glad I humor you. I aim to please; “Mirth is King!” However, I have read the entire Declaration of Secession from South Carolina. You, sir, are speaking half-truths. I suppose when you saw the word “slavery” you stopped reading. My letter to the editor did not deny that slavery was an issue in the war for Southern Independence; I chose not bring it up for the reason that see LETTERS, pg. 13

Retired captain left behind a legacy in law enforcement By Meredith Rigsby News Editor
I
n August 1979, now retired Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office Capt. Richard Farmer began his career in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff. Farmer grew up in Hanover County and always knew he wanted to go into law enforcement, but first tried the traditional college route: It wasn’t for him. “I was 22 years old and it’s like ‘Alright, it’s time to settle down and if you’re going to be a police officer now is the time to do it,” Farmer said. Farmer was originally interested in a career in law enforcement because of “the excitement.” Back in 1979, however, there were only three men working in the department, and they relied on their people skills to get information about things going on in the county. In addition, at the time, communication was limited.
They didn’t have two-way radios and they didn’t have cell phones. Instead, they had all of the local pay phone numbers memorized because that was how police officers stayed in touch with each other. However, “Hanover County has always afforded their officers very good equipment,” Farmer said. “Even in 1979 my car was better equipped than the surrounding areas.” Farmer worked in uniform patrol for nine years before being assigned to the Hanover County Narcotics Investigation Unit in 1988. A year later, when Col. Stewart Cook came into office as sheriff, Farmer was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration as a full-time task force officer. “I was sworn in through department of justice to have federal powers at the United States and I worked exclusively with them for two years in Henrico, but we traveled all
over the U.S. enforcing federal laws,” Farmer said. “And that task force is still in existence

nothing had changed, he said. Farmer worked the evening shift for about two years before being given the responsibility to set up and form Hanover County’s first High
Risk Entry Team (SWAT) in 1994. “I was the first SWAT team commander, I had to work with Richmond, Henrico and learn all about SWAT, and then we selected the seven original members that we trained and I stayed in that capacity, dual roles, for 14 years,” Farmer said. In 1995, Farmer got back into narcotics and was assigned sergeant-in-charge for the unit. A year later, he was assigned sergeant-in-charge of uniform patrol for the midnight shift. After serving for two years in that capacity, Farmer was promoted to the rank of command sergeant. That same year, he was assigned as commander of vice/narcotics and street crimes where he stayed for two years. In 2000, Sheriff Cook created a new program known as youth services, which Farmer was in charge of as commander for seven years.
“During that time I had to go around and survey every one of the schools, get all the action plans together, and I did all those things,” Farmer said. From 2007 to 2009, Farmer served as commander of investigative operations and in April of 2009 was promoted to the rank of captain. He then worked until 2011 as commander of personnel, training, fleet and budget before becoming commander of special operations to include all special teams, youth services and animal control. “Animal Control is great; that’s the fun part of my career was getting able to get involved in something and watch it flower,” Farmer said. Over the course of his career, Farmer also attended a 10-week program at the FBI National Academy in Quantico. There he trained and learned with police executives from all around the

County mourns ‘servant leader’ By Laura Kebede Richmond Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE — In the lobby of Memorial Regional Medical Center, a bust of Charles Edward “Charlie” Horner is among the tributes to people who were instrumental in bringing the hospital to Hanover County. Horner, 75, of Mechanicsville died Wednesday, July 22, at the same hospital after becoming ill from an infection he contracted the previous weekend at the Rappahannock River. He was known to many as a servant leader who steered clear of the limelight and rarely said no to friends and strangers in need.
His wife of 53 years, Carolyn Horner, praised the doctors and staff at the hospital for their care of her husband. “They did everything they possibly could. It was such a loving experience,” she said. “He thinks of everyone as his friend. ... I think that comes from his God and his love for people.” Horner was on the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation’s first board of trustees along with 18 others in 1998 to manage the buildings and facilities vacated after the hospital’s joint venture with Bon Secours began. He served on the board until 2006. see LEADER, pg. 29

Declaration of Secession: (The entire article, which makes the same argument I have made, can be found at avalon.law. yale.edu/csa_sarsec.asp#) “We, therefore, the People of South Carolina, by our delegates in Convention assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, have solemnly declared that the Union heretofore existing between this State and the other States of North America, is dissolved, and that the State of South Carolina has resumed her position among the nations of the world, as a separate and independent State; with full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent States may of right do.” Mr. Sneed, our revisionist historians call it a “Civil War.” However, it was another Revolution for the South to over-through the second coming of King George: Lincoln. Given current events, such as the Supreme Courts of both Virginia and the United States overturning referendums and state legislation concerning healthcare and gay marriage, do you understand now what an over-bearing federal government is? Probably not. I have already demonstrated my “own lack of that knowledge” concerning the war for Southern Independence, and I suppose all else. By the way, did any of your ancestors serve in either of the aforementioned wars? If not, you haven’t a “dog in the fight,” let alone any room to comment. In closing, I would be remiss if I did not address your grouping of the Sons of Confederate Veterans with the Ku Klux Klan, etc. Quite frankly, this shows your own ignorance of our purpose and truly does not dignify a response. However, to quote a good friend of mine, who is a former SCV national chief of heritage defense, “We
sleep on our sheets; we don’t wear them!” The SCV certainly does not condone the actions of a lone lunatic like Dylann Roof, who is not a member of the SCV, but you associate him with the SCV simply because you saw a picture, one picture, of him with a Confederate Battle Flag. Furthermore, our State Division has gone so far as to issue a formal proclamation condemning the actions of radical organizations such as “The Virginia Flaggers,” who are contrary to our cause of reverently preserving the legacy of our American Confederate ancestors. In tennis, I believe they call this “Game, set, and match.” Andrew Bennett Morehead. Mechanicsville
Property defended I am writing in reference to Steve Sneed’s letter “Taking issue with the role of slavery in the Civil War” in the July 15, 2015, issue of The Mechanicsville Local. I can’t believe he complains about others lack of knowledge about history and the Civil War and then goes on to show his own historical ignorance. Yes, the root cause of the war was slavery, a completely legal institution under the U.S. Constitution in 1861. The state of Virginia was a sovereign state recognized by the 1783 Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War, and when it voted to join the union in 1787, it reserved the right to withdraw or secede. This was accepted and Virginia was allowed to join the Union. South Carolina was a similar sovereign state, and when it seceded and the Union army would not withdraw from Fort Sumter, a critical fort guarding the entrance to Charleston, the war began. So the cause of the start of the Civil War was the Union
army’s refusal to vacate a fort that no longer belonged to the U.S. government, since it was located in a state that had just withdrawn from the United States of America. There was an excellent article on this subject on July 15, 2015, in the RTD written by Walter Williams. Mr. Sneed, please read this and maybe you can learn a little bit of U.S. history: http://www.richmond. com/ap/commentary/article_f07a6e07-23ea-5708-94acb0ec52f2c391.html Sneed also goes on to state the Confederate states committed treason, but fails to state that as his opinion since not one of the leaders or any other southerner that I know of, was ever put on trial or convicted of treason related to the Civil War. But I guess the facts are just “the nonsense you’ve read or heard.” Mr. Sneed, please show me where in the U.S. Constitution that succession is unconstitutional. My Virginia ancestors fought for the Confederate States of America (CSA) because their state had been invaded and they really had no choice if they wanted to try to defend their property from being pillaged, farms destroyed, food and personal belongings stolen by the Northern aggressors. It didn’t matter if they were pro- or anti-slavery. Sneed then goes into a rambling diatribe, even bringing in the Koch Brothers, who I don’t think were involved in the Civil War, and really shows his true colors. Amazing! Richard C. Smith Mechanicsville
Slavery still dividing nation Steve Sneed certainly does have a lot of opinions about a time (the 1860s) and a man (Andrew Moorehead) he doesw not know. But I’ve always heard that “. . . Opinions
are like armpits, everybody has a couple but some just smell worse than others.” I, thank God, have a different “culture and world view” from Mr. Sneed’s and find his generalizations and political position founded in hate and not respect for others’ opinions. Mr. Sneed excludes all other reasons for the War of Northern Aggression but slavery. Such a myopic view fits perfectly into his apparent view that the majority were oppressed by some “aristocracy” that manipulated weakminded “poor people” into starting a war to maintain slavery. Really, would that work on you, Mr. Sneed? I interpret from Mr. Sneed’s references to the Koch brothers that he is not a free market capitalist. He is certainly entitled to his opinion (there’s that word again) but he is not entitled to his own facts. The South had every right to secede and the Constitution would not have been ratified without that guarantee. Virginia would not have seceded had Abraham Lincoln not called for 75,000 volun-
teers to attack and force the other Southern states into Mr. Lincoln’s Union. Calling Confederates “traitors” is unjustified hate speech. But Mr. Sneed seems more than capable of hate speech with his references to generalizations about who “. . . love and respect this country,” live in a “little world” and “. . . escalate from shaming and ostracizing to intimidation and threats” He even mentions “church burnings, racist cops . . . and similar actions.” In closing, the revisionist belief and propaganda that the War of the 1860s was only about slavery fits well into the progressive mindset that aims to divide this country. What better way to justify the naked aggression against the South than the demonize the region for an institution (slavery) that was still legal in the United States until the fall of 1865, months after Lincoln had died and the South defeated. If the Union hated slavery so much, why did it not outlaw slavery in 1861? Berk Jones Mechanicsville

Main Street’s status questioned by Prichard By Meredith Rigsby mrigsby@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – Faye O. Prichard, a member of Ashland Town Council, has asked that the Ashland Main Street Association submit a presentation about what the organization is doing and where efforts have been placed. “While we certainly have been talking in local terms about Main Street eventually becoming selfsustaining, we have not PRICHARD given them any direction from when that should happen that I’m aware
of,” Prichard said. She made the request during the Tuesday, July 21, regular meeting. Last week’s meeting was “business as usual,” with the consent agenda being approved and all town bills being paid. Council member Steve Trivett did ask about town council’s annual $23,000 donation to the Ashland Main Street Association and if the expectation will be that the group becomes self-sustaining. A change to Council Policy COU-548: Paid Time Off (PTO) was approved, effectively moving the accrual date from July 1 to June 25, the day that payroll is run, in an effort to make it easier for staff to see how much paid time off they have at any given time. see PRICHARD, pg. 22

The film is the first of what members of the organization said they hope will be one of many more to come. Crew members are from all over Virginia, while the cast is made up of over 40 members from various states, including Georgia and Florida. Ashland was selected as a filming location because of its small town feel. “The film takes place in a small town called Homer, Alabama, and so we were really trying to find a location where we were really able to recreate that small town charm,” Waters said. Filming has taken place all over Ashland, including downtown, the park and the train
of Community Housing and Development and has, for several months, been working with Waukeshaw Development Company to complete the study. A July 22 meeting was scheduled between Waukeshaw Development and the association in an effort to finalize the feasibility study, Hartgrove said. Going forward, Hartgrove recommended that the council potentially meet with the Main Street Association, Economic Development Committee or Theatre Committee, whichever is most appropriate, schedule a work session with the potential developer to discuss how the
project should progress and schedule a community input session in the very near future. At this point, there are no definite timelines for the project. Mayor George Spagna gave his report, noting that the Bluemont Concert Series is set to begin in August, that there are new businesses and restaurants opening around town, and that the Town of Ashland recently was awarded the Voice of the People Award by the National Research Center. Dallin Kimble, clerk of council, detailed the award, saying the town received recognition for its education and enrichment programs, spe-
cifically how it relates to cultural activities in preschool. He added that these are areas where the town’s improvement and overall score ranked among the very best in the country. The Finance Department reported that it is getting ready for its yearly audit, taking place Aug. 11-14 and invited council members to come to the office at any time to speak with auditors. Farrar also said the department recently completed replacement of its office floors. Nora Amos, director of planning and community development gave the Planning Department report, introduc-
and the current president of Kiwanis International is a woman.) The Kiwanis Club of Ashland, Hanover’s only Kiwanis club, was established in 1923 and has been in continuous operation for 92 years. With an average membership of 60 to 70, Ashland Kiwanis actively sponsors and provides member involvement and financial support for Key Clubs in four area high schools, a CKI Club at Randolph-Macon College and the Aktion Club for adults with disabilities. The club’s perfect atten-
dance program involves four area elementary schools. The club also has a reading mentors program at Henry Clay Elementary School and a fouryear college/technical school scholarship program for eligible, selected Key Club graduates. The club also plans and runs the annual Ashland Old Time Holiday Parade, conducts quarterly highway trash collections along stretches of Route 54, and provides both adult and Key Club volunteers for Ashland Train Day. To raise funds to support the sponsored youth service organizations and other service
projects, Ashland Kiwanians can be found working at the Ashland Strawberry Faire, Ashland Street Parties and the Hobo Diner on Train Day. The club also partners with Market Ashland Partnership to hold “casino” night events. “To learn more about us, visit our website, www.ashlandvakiwanis.org, or give me a call at 804-798-8959,” Whitehorne said. “We’d love to have you be our guest at one of our twicemonthy dinner meetings at Estes Dining Hall at R-MC, or, better yet, join us for one of our service projects,” Whitehorne said.
station. The crew also filmed in Richmond and Petersburg. “Shooting the Prodigal” is not a typical investment-type film, with a few donors giving large amounts of money. Instead, Belltower Pictures received financial support from local churches, groups and individuals. “First Baptist Church has given the film a ton of support,” Waters said. “Other churches from various denominations have given their support, which is kind of one of the
messages of the film: bringing people together from various backgrounds and denominations.” The faith-based comedy was written by David Powers, Debora Hocutt and Greg Womble. Powers also is directing the film. Belltower Pictures filmed for about a month before moving on to post-production. The goal is to have the film finished by early November and to be in theaters by the first quarter of 2016 in the spring.

ing Joe Topham, the new business retention and expansion manager. Amos also notified council that the planning commission will take up a conditional use permit (CUP) request in August from Grant’s Garage to operate a garage and tire sales repair and service just east of Interstate 95 on the southern part of Route 54. Filming of the movie, “Shooting the Prodigal,” just wrapped up, Amos said, but, because of increased requests of that kind, the planning commission will work to formalize the process for people who
wish to film in Ashland. The Ashland Police Department gave its monthly report, reminding everyone of construction in its parking lot and saying that officers have increased their Adopt-a-Senior visits due to the heat. Council adjourned for an executive session, consulting with legal counsel concerning litigation between R-CI Builders and Green Acres Associates, North Ashland v. Ashland BZA, or REZ20150313. The next town council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The winner of battle of the bands was Blue Rooster, which raised $895 for Young Life Capurnum. The total amount raised for all of the participating charities was $5,108.31. Center of the Universe Brewing Co. did not create a special beer for the event, but on hot days like the ones on both days of the festival, the Sling Shot Kolsch is the best seller, according to Porter. “It’s a good beer on a hot day, it goes down nice and smooth and easy, he said. The Atlee Station YMCA and the Patrick Henry YMCA are partnering to send the kids to camp, which costs $170 per camper, per week. “They get swim lessons four days a week, which is really cool because that’s a life skill they may not otherwise get,” Austin said. “They get breakfast and lunch every day and they get transportation to camp.” The Atlee Station YMCA also is raising funds for its Bright Beginnings program, which supports 23 youths from Washington-Henry and Mechanicsville Elementary

The shopping trip is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 12. “We believe through Bright Beginnings that empowering the youth with a set of new school clothes and school supplies will help them to achieve academic success,” Austin said. “They are starting school on the first day side-by-side on the same playing field as their peers.” As executive director,

Because of the Metrocash program, local workers also saved a total of more than $622,000 in tax preparation fees. “This savings is important for people with very

Often individuals and families are not aware of this credit causing this money to be “left on the table.” This is money that struggling families could use to get out of debt or pay household expenses. The EITC dollars represent 37 percent of the total refunds that working families and indi-

CORRECTION In an article that appeared in last week’s edition about Patrick Henry’s residence off of Rural Point Road and its “History at Sunset” event to be held on Saturday, July 25, the property was incorrectly referred to as “Pine Splash.” The correct name of the property is Pine Slash. Henry and his wife, the former Sarah Shelton, received the property from her parents upon marrying in 1754. We apologize for the error.

The Cold Harbor Ruritan Club presented three individual 1,000 scholarships to three local students during its annual family picnic on June 23. The recipients were Josselin Cruz, left, and Nichole Anderson, right. Ryan Cross also received a scholarship. Club officers shown are, from left, Donald Rozell, president; Tony Griffin, treasurer; and Keith Rigsby vice president. The club gives at least two scholarships every year to deserving local students. This year members were able to award three scholarships due mainly to the huge success of their Shrimp Festival. “We wish all three great success in their future,” Rozell said.
Dr. Joseph Elrod, Jr. and Dr. Bryson Dunham are excited to provide their patients with “gentle dental care” in a comfortable and relaxed environment. As they stay focused on the most current trends and technologies, they are proud to offer:

GRAL swim teams wrap up regular season By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – The Greater Richmond Aquatic League wrapped up its regular season Tuesday night, but for most teams the focus was on the future. For the Rockville Racers and the Atlee Gators, their final meet of the regular season was no exception. Atlee outscored Rockville 1,217.5-769.5 in a GRAL Division 3 contest, but both teams cared more about qualifying more team members for the league’s Champs meet, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at SwimRVA. Events begin at 9 a.m. each day, with swimmers 12 years old and younger competing Saturday and those 13 and older competing Sunday. Atlee head coach Matt Elliott was ecstatic. “We swam awesome,” Elliott
