Bon Secours gets new da Vinci Xi Robot, expands robotics program Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – Bon Secours Richmond Health System is the first hospital system in the Central Virginia region to acquire the da Vinci® Xi Robotic Surgical System, providing surgeons with superior real-time visualization, greater dexterity, and precision during minimally invasive robotics procedures. This next-generation robotic surgical system can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for highly complex, multi-quadrant surgeries in which instruments must be able to reach up and down and across large areas of the body, such as the abdomen or chest. Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico County
and Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Hanover County are the only locations in Richmond where the da Vinci Xi technology is
DA VINCI XI available. After introducing the system in mid-June, Andrew Vorenberg, M.D., colon and rectal surgeon and past vice chairman of department of surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital, was the first surgeon in the MidAtlantic region to successfully perform a minimally invasive
colorectal procedure with the daVinci Xi on June 23. Surgeons at Bon Secours are now using the robot to perform a number of procedures in the areas of cardiac, gynecology, urology, thoracic, bariatric, pediatric and general surgery. “In the hands of Bon Secours experienced specialists, the da Vinci Xi offers patients a minimally invasive surgical option while reducing complications and the time it takes to return to normal activities,” said Dr. Vorenberg. “It allows surgeons to operate in multiple areas of the body during the same operation without having to remove the instruments, undock it, place it into a different position — ultimately providing extreme precision and control.” Using a minimally invasive see DA VINCI, pg. 4

OPINION | The Local Views
Americans vocal in wanting change
From the editor
Put the phone down and focus on driving Our parent company, BH Media Group, recently recommended employees watch a video about distracted driving. Well, as was said by many coworkers through Richmond Suburban News, it was quite eye-opening and, most of all, tragic. The true story of a young woman who survived a crash that claimed the lives of her parents is shared by her and her boyfriend. She has had a struggle to regain some semblance of a normal life since the accident. We see the public service announcements and reminders from various apps about don’t use them while driving, yet some motorists continue to talk, text and surf while behind the wheel of a vehicle. The real-life story we watched went back to that fateful day when the new college graduate, traveling with her parents, was struck by a tractor-trailer that had avoided a car driven by a teenager. The teen was distracted by a call on his smartphone. He will carry the events of that day with him for the rest of his life — because he was the one at fault. We see it every day — and, admittedly, some of us have been guilty of checking email while at a stop light. That is on the not again list. My vehicle has Bluetooth, which is certainly convenient — but not a necessity in my life. While there has been that ongoing addiction to the iPhone (personal and business), whatever the call is has to wait. Leave a voicemail and I’ll get back to you. The ultimate frustration is seeing someone zipping through an intersection with a phone strategically placed between the ear and shoulder — with no consideration for the status of the lighting system. Yes, this writer has witnessed too many running red lights. We get into a vehicle and just assume we’re going to get from Point A to Point B. Well, that’s far from the truth. Sadly, the likelihood of being involved in an automobile accident is all too real. And sometimes they occur in the freakiest of circumstances. Distracted driving, however, is not acceptable and should not be the cause of any motor vehicle accident. Put down the phone and drive. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Change is a concept that is best described by the ones who are demanding it. Every four years, Americans are barraged with promises of change from a system that is broken. Problem is, the individuals making the promises have cried wolf too many times. And defining what change represents or how that possible change affects your personal life is more perplexing. Affecting and defining change are concepts whose meanings have become tired and clichéd, and, when politicians preach it, we turn a deaf ear. Something is, however, changing
in this year’s pre-election stampede, but it’s not in the routine rhetoric to which we have become accustomed. Has the American voter finally arrived at the point of no return, where talk of change will not take the place of real action and pragmatic policies? If the voices of early polls indicate anything, they tell us that a vocal and substantial group of Americans are demanding more than just talk when it comes to this group of potential candidates. Though Donald Trump’s rise to the top of the Republican heap is certainly not sustainable, it does reflect a genuine disgust on the part of a segment of voters who seriously question the direction of government in America — which brings me back to
change and a few comments regarding change and how to reasonably gauge its progress. It’s important to realize that any real transformation in the American system is unlikely, and real change comes within the restraints of our defined political system of government. That doesn’t mean oversight and management don’t require the constant vigil of the public, and there’s always a better way to build a mousetrap. Talk of eliminating legal immigration, forcing other countries to pay for our infrastructure on the border or demeaning other candidates is not change, or, better said, change that see CHANGE, pg. 8

Inviting urban sprawl in Hanover County In the July 29, 2015 edition of The Mechanicsville Local, there was an article relating to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors’ approval of a massive new construction, multi-use development plan for U.S. 301 near New Ashcake Road. This is a tragedy. After much contention, debate and despite a lengthy petition from citizens opposing this project, members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved this deal. To those members of the board that voted in favor of this, I, along with many other residents, am extremely disappointed in your decision. Mrs. Angela Kelly-Wiecek (Chickahominy District), among others, does not seem to understand that this level of development will not only significantly alter the physical landscape of the area but also will change the rural heritage of this county. In an email that I sent prior to the board’s approval, I posed several questions and concerns to members of the board. Not to my surprise, I never received a response from any of the seven board members. With this new development, we can expect traffic on U.S. 301, which is already horrendous, to increase signifi-
cantly. To my knowledge, no traffic studies have been completed nor have any studies been conducted to determine the long-term effects of this development to our county’s resources, including law enforcement and public schools. To add insult to injury, this all comes on the heels of pay/salary freezes for many of those county employees. Mrs. Kelly-Wiecek, if you want to live in a mega mixeduse commercial and residential-type area, then move to Short Pump. Hanover County citizens stay in and come to Hanover County to get away from the Richmond and see LETTERS, pg. 8

All of the other members that voted in favor of this project do not live near U.S. 301 or New Ashcake Road, so why should they care about this development? It certainly won’t affect their daily lives, which is exactly why they did not hesitate to vote in favor of this despite serious opposition from residents. After listening to the Bible Lesson and scriptures, this young man took it upon himself to take the lives of the nine people due to hatred. The family members of the nine people who were killed extended forgiveness to this young man. The act of forgiveness is one of the highest acts of Christian faith that can be shown to another person. Thank you, Melody, as I would also like to know, “When will skin color stop being an issue in today’s society?” J.T. Boyd Jr. Mechanicsville
But the voice of a substantial segment of American voters cannot be ignored, and their support of Trump represents more than confidence in a billionaire to run the greatest nation on earth. They are looking for
authenticity in a candidate that speaks their kind of language, straight, unfiltered and to the point. The oversimplified platform appeals to many voters who have lost trust in the system and the people who run it.
Sadly, real solutions are never simple, and loud boisterous debates usually result in limited results. Is there a message in the recent madness of party politics? Yes, but only if the politicians running get the message that Americans are tired of the same old thing, and innovative
thinking is required to maintain our valued way of life. A Howard Beale/Network approach like the one we are witnessing now does little to resolve the country’s real issues. But, it should highlight the fact that Americans are ready for change, and we’re not just talking this time.

This scripture in the Gospels leads to the event in the Bible called the “Good Samaritan.”

These behaviors are taught based on one’s perception of a race being more superior to another race. She said she thinks Trivett will be “pleasantly surprised” when Main Street representatives address council. “I think Steve Trivett will be pleasantly surprised at what all that Main Street does. When I think about Main Street, we’re not talking about direct value in the way that you think Main Street will bring in a new business, bring in ‘X’ number of tax dollars. That’s just not what you’re going to see,” Prichard added. “What Main Street is tasked with is growing and enhancing the downtown business environment. It’s to make downtown a place where people want to shop and want to live and want to be. And I think Main Street is doing an amazing job at that,” she said. With the Ashland Theater becoming a highPRICHARD light in the town, Prichard pointed out the role the Main Street group has taken by being actively involved in its revitalization and growth. She praised Main Street as being “actively involved in all the things that make downtown a place where people want to come.” She called the members “the real supporters of business.” In acknowledging the $20,000 annual contribution, Prichard said that is “a minimal amount of money for what we get in return. The members and the citizen volunteers put in so many hours and so much time and effort that you couldn’t begin to imagine the dollar value of their contributions.” “So, basically, the $20,000 pales in comparison to what those folks put in,” she said in reaffirming her support of the Ashland Main Street Association.

know. That’s kind of the point of this life. And I realized again I needed to learn how to sway But this time with the needs of my kids That’s one thing to say Another to do And since then it’s been my challenge each day. I don’t like the saying That teachers change lives Because lives are constantly changing For good or for bad or to feel something new Our lives show the sum Of the choices we’re making As a teacher my goal is not to change lives But to help students recognize those choices
To help them to realize Their future is theirs And it will reflect the shape of their effort. Have I achieved this, With even one student? Only they will ever really know. I’ve certainly tried And taken notes for next year It’s been an instructive ride. So you ask what’s been different Then what I’ve expected And I suppose my answer is everything But I think that’s the point It’s why we’re all here It’s the nature of life And of teaching.

commissions, committees, and neighborhoods. Seminar sessions feature guest speakers, interactive demonstrations from town staff, group discussions, activities, case studies and other topic-related exercises. I could do great things in that arena.” At the University of Missouri, Wulf met his wife Ellen, who was also getting a journalism degree, and they both began working at the college news station, KOMU-TV, an ABC News affiliate. After graduation, the pair both got jobs at another ABC affiliate, WCBD-TV, located in Charleston, South Carolina. “It’s a great town, but, at the time, it was like the number one per capita murder rate in the world and so I spent a lot of time covering crime and lots of crime,” Wulf said. “So I kind of lost . . . the journalism thing kind of lost its veneer, actually having to work every day in a newsroom environment where you had to get something on the air and the more sensationalistic the better. So it was a little disillusioning, but I’m still a huge fan of broadcast
journalism and the power that it has.” It was the early 1980s, and Wulf possessed a skill that very few in the world had experience with: video technology. During that time most television stations were still using film cameras, and video technology was just coming onto the consumer market, according to Wulf. After their stint in South Carolina, Wulf and his wife quit their jobs and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where they secured positions at a small company that was opening its first dozen super stores. That company would eventually evolve into electronics giant Circuit City. Wulf spent 12 years working for Circuit City. During his first two years with the company, he was in video sales before being promoted to a management position. While in that management position, Wulf moved to different locations around the coun-
try to help open stores and train staff, including Nashville, Tennessee; Pompano Beach, Florida; and Austin, Texas. He was then offered a management training position in Richmond, where the company’s headquarters was located, and decided it was time to plant some roots. His wife had just had their first child, a son, and Wulf didn’t want to have to keep moving his family from place to place. Following 12 years with Circuit City, Wulf took a job with CarMax, a subsidiary of Circuit City at the time, as assistant vice president of store operations and management. “I saw the writing on the wall. There were things that Circuit City was doing back in the late ’90s that didn’t make sense to me, Wulf said. “They stopped doing customer surveys. They dropped their centralized training department, and the one thing that made Circuit City different from its competitors like Best Buy was
the people who were working at Circuit City actually knew something about the product they were selling. When you lost that training you lost your competitive advantage.” At CarMax, Wulf was responsible for internal video production, managementtraining, sales training, customer relations and event planning, among other tasks. He stayed with CarMax for another 12 years before, in about 2009, he had the opportunity to start his own production company, WulfTeam Productions. “I really love the video work and — when an opportunity came up for me to start my own company — I took advantage of that,” he said.
When Wulf took his position at CarMax, he had already been spreading the Circuit City story for years. He thought Circuit City’s evolution was a great story about how to build a solid company. He would share with people a story about a guy that moved to Richmond from New York, opened up a television sales shop on Broad Street that eventually grew to become the nation’s largest electronics retailer. However, in the end, the family left the company and things started to go downhill. “It’s like the rise and fall of Rome, watching Circuit City,” Wulf said. “But, it was a great story. I realized that when I left
CarMax. There was nobody to tell that story anymore because I was like the last person to move from Circuit City over to CarMax when the company first started growing.” Wulf called the former CEO of Circuit City and told him he was interested in telling his family’s story. He interviewed the son of the original owner of Circuit City, as well as other people he had known throughout his time with the company. Wulf put together a documentary about the rise and fall of Circuit City and it was well received by the community. “A Tale of Two Cities: The Circuit City Story” first see WULF, pg. 19

Lightning is being considered as the cause of a house fire July 27 in the 10000 block of Jennings Branch Court in the Kings Charter subdivision. No injuries were reported but two people were displaced.
The two left homeless due to the fire are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. Williams said the Hanover Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine what caused the fire. Based on witness state-
ments, investigators suspect the fire was caused by a lighting strike. “Hanover Fire-EMS reminds all citizens to have a fire escape plan, Williams said. “If a fire occurs in your home, get out and stay out. Call 911 from a safe location and wait outside for the fire department to arrive.

The winning ticket correctly matched all five white balls, 20-30-62-65-74, plus the Megaball, 01.
The ticket had an annuity value of $153 million or a cash value of $91.8 million, less 25 percent federal withholding. Peloquin, a professional truck driver for nearly 30 years, purchased the ticket at Penn 80/Flying J Travel Plaza at 1460 N. Ridge Road, Milton, Northumberland County, while traveling through Pennsylvania for work. The plaza, a lottery retailer since September 2010, earns a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Peloquin didn’t check his ticket for several days. “I was getting ready to turn in last Saturday night when I went online to check my numbers,” Peloquin said. “Needless to say, I didn’t get to sleep that

night.” He then took a photo of the ticket and shared it with several close relatives, who con-
firmed that his ticket matched the winning numbers. Peloquin said the jackpot win will enable him and his
wife to retire early and spend more time with their family. On July 29, Peloquin presented the Mega Millions ticket for validation at lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County. Lottery officials confirmed it was the jackpot-winning ticket after examining the ticket and executing proprietary security measures. The odds of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot are 1in-258,890,850. The odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are 1-in14.71. The Pennsylvania Lottery joined the Mega Millions multi-state game in early 2010 and has awarded two jackpots
for the game. The first was a $149 million annuity value jackpot sold for the May 20, 2014, drawing. It was claimed several months later by a couple from the Pittsburgh area who took the $86.8 million cash prize. The Pennsylvania Lottery has sold 17 jackpot-winning Powerball tickets since joining that multi-state game in 2002. The largest prize ever awarded to a single winning ticket in Pennsylvania was a $110.2 million Powerball jackpot cash prize from the May 8, 2004, drawing, which was claimed by a couple from Skillman, New Jersey. Mechanicsville wins Little League state title By Dylan Garner Richmond Times-Dispatch HENRICO – Every superhero deserves a cape. The players on the Mechanicsville National all-star team got theirs in the form of a banner congratulating them on a Little League state title. “I feel like as a team, we’re like Superman and nobody has our Kryptonite,” Mechanicsville player David Snead said. Mechanicsville National cruised to a 15-1, four-inning victory over Central Loudoun National for the Virginia State Little League Tournament championship on Tuesday afternoon at the Tuckahoe Little League field. The team will represent Virginia at the Little League Southeastern Regional beginning Aug. 7 in Warner Robins, Georgia. The winner of that regional will represent the Southeast at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in late August. The 14-run rout was the final act for a Mechanicsville National team that was unmatched through the state tournament — particularly on the offensive end. After belting three home runs in Monday’s 17-2 semifinal win, Mechanicsville drove four more over the fence in the championship-game win, including back-to-back homers in the first inning. Despite the display of super-

hero-level strength, going for the fences isn’t something that Mechanicsville manager Brian Colgin and his coaches stress to players. But Colgin said he considers it the result of a good approach at the plate. “I’d rather have 100 line drives than 100 home runs, but we tell them if you hit the ball hard, good things are going to happen,” said Colgin. The consecutive home runs were off the bats of Tyler Warren and Brett Allen, part of a five-run first inning. Warren’s two-run homer was the first spark for the Mechanicsville

offense. He also pitched well, going all four innings and striking out four. His only blemish came on a solo home run by Central Loudoun’s Grant Barberich in the fourth. No other Central Loudoun hitter managed more than a single off Warren, a 6foot-tall, 13-year-old lefty. “I was just focusing on throwing strikes and hoping my
defense would make plays,” said Warren. “And they did throughout the entire game.” After a 1-2-3 second, Mechanicsville loaded the bases in the third. Caden Plummer cleared the bases with a grand slam to left-center, increasing the lead to 9-0. Mechanicsville continued to build on its lead in the fourth, tallying six more runs. The final
two were driven in by Coleton Payne with the team’s fourth homer of the game. Plummer led the team with six RBIs on two hits. Allen finished 3 for 3 at the plate, scoring each time. Mechanicsville is now a handful of victories away from a berth in the Little League World Series. Tuckahoe’s Little League team advanced to the final of
the Southeastern Region in last year’s tournament before being eliminated. Mechanicsville will open the eight-team, double-elimination Southeastern Region on Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. against the Georgia state champion. “It’s every kid’s dream to do this,” Colgin said. “It’s got to be see TITLE, pg. 32
Errors cost Post 175 dearly in Legion tourney By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch FREDERICKSBURG – The day began at 7 a.m. when the Mechanicsville Post 175 team assembled at Atlee High School and carpooled north. The players were half awake, running on less than five hours sleep. Thursday night’s game in Fredericksburg didn’t end until 12:30 in the morning, and by the time they were back in their beds in Hanover County, it was nearly 2 a.m. So at 10 a.m. Friday, they were back on the field in search of two wins to advance in the American Legion state tournament. They won the first against Fredericksburg Post 55, but collapsed in the ninth inning of the second, losing 15-8 to Albemarle Post 74 at Riverbend High School. Albemarle won the state crown for the third consecutive year and advances to the regional tournament in North Carolina. “It’s pretty outstanding to win it three years in a row,” Albemarle’s Dylan Shifflett said. Entering the ninth inning, Mechanicsville held an 8-7 lead. It needed just three more outs to extend the tournament one more day and force a winnertake-all championship game today. But Mechanicsville was undone by its own mistakes. It committed three errors in the ninth, then allowed three consecutive hits that brought in four runs. When the inning was over, 11 batters had come to the plate and eight runs had scored on five hits. Defense continued to be an issue for Mechanicsville, which committed 12 errors in its final three games. “We were gassed,”

Mechanicsville manager Tyler Kane said. “Once you lose one game, you’re in a hole. You have to play a bunch of games.” Mechanicsville’s brightest spot was relief pitcher Justin Bishop, who went 6.1 innings. He scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, striking out eight. With Mechanicsville deep in the tournament and desperate for pitching, Bishop kept his team afloat. “He keeps hitters off balance,” Mechanicsville manager Tyler Kane said. “We’re very fortunate to have a lot of good arms.” Albemarle played Friday under an interim manager, Al Landino, who runs the King George team. Albemarle’s nor-
mal manager, Mike Maynard, was suspended from Friday’s game following a verbal altercation between players and fans Thursday night. Landino came to the field Friday morning intending to be a spectator. When Maynard was informed that he wouldn’t be allowed to manage, he asked Landino, a longtime friend of his, to take his spot. “I was asked to fill in, so I did,” Landino said. In the first game, Post 175 cranked out 16 hits and swamped Fredericksburg Post 55 17-3. Mechanicsville benefitted from six walks and four errors by Fredericksburg. The game ended in seven innings thanks to the slaugh-
Mechanicsville Post 175 rolled through the first two games of the American Legion Virginia State tournament, clobbering Winchester Post 21 14-2 Tuesday and shutting out Vienna Post 180 5-0 Wednesday. But Thursday night, while facing Albemarle Post 74 in the winner’s bracket at Riverbend High School, Mechanicsville ran into a team it could not beat: itself. Post 175 (20-3) committed six errors – three allowing Albemarle to tie the game in the fourth inning and another allowing Post 74 to load the bases and set up the winning run in the ninth – in a 4-3 loss to Albemarle. Mechanicsville now has to –
ter rule. All nine batters in the Mechanicsville scored at least one run. Josh Lam had five RBIs and socked a two-run home run into the trees beyond left field. That made the score 14-3 and essentially guaranteed the game would end two innings early. Andrew Sergent scored three runs and reached base in all five at-bats. He had only one hit, but walked once, reached base on two errors and was hit by a pitch. Jacob Weis pitched five innings for Mechanicsville, allowing three runs on four hits. go through Fredericksburg Post 55 this morning before getting another shot at Post 74 and the state championship. Mechanicsville has to beat Albemarle twice to earn the title. “We didn’t lose that game because we had lesser players. We didn’t lose that game because we had lesser talent,” said Post 175 manager Tyler Kane. “We lost that game because we made too many mental mistakes, and that’s from the first inning through the ninth.” Mechanicsville has made its share of mistakes this season, but usually the team produces more than enough offense to compensate for any defensive lapses. But Post 74 starting pitcher Parker Heinemann held Post 175 to just four hits in an 8-2/3 inning outing. “That’s the best I’ve ever seen him thrown,” said Albemarle manager Mike Maynard. “That’s the best team he’ll ever face this year. I’ve seen [Post 175] get 15 runs a game. He held them to three runs.” Heinemann had his moments where he looked vulnerable, and Maynard came out to the mound several times for a chat. “He just told me to settle down, throw my game – which I did,” Heinemann said. “Ever since I’ve been in high school, coach has told me, ‘A pitcher’s nothing without his defense.’ The seven men behind me gave me the opportunity, and I … threw my game and ended up with a nice win.” Heinemann lasted until Post 175’s Haiden Lamb hit a twoout double in top of the ninth inning. Maynard turned to a second-baseman Eli Sumpter, to get the third out. Sumpter did, and Post 74 took advantage

Marlins jump to fourth-place finish in Champs By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Mechanicsville’s Marlins made a big jump in the standings on the second day of the Greater Richmond Aquatic League Champs swim meet Sunday. The GRAL Division 2 team had to leap over a number of Division I opponents, including cross-county rival Burkwood, to move from seventh place after the first day Saturday to finish fourth overall in the meet. “The fact that we were fourth just is amazing. They did great. It was cool, really cool,” said Mechanicsville head coach Ari Brothers. “We should have been 10th or ninth.” Brothers said it is surprising to move up so much on Sunday, which is traditionally the final day of the meet. “A lot of times Sunday is peoples’ strong day,” Brothers said. “The kids are older. They know how to swim. … To move up on
that day is a lot harder than it is to move up on a Saturday.” Brothers said the Marlins boys teams did a lot of heavy lifting to get them into fourth place. “Our 11-12 boys were amazing. They swam so well. They worked hard all year, and yesterday was their day,” Brothers said. “Today, our 13-14 year old boys. Brendan Farrar, he had three, four personal bests. That was great.” Mechanicsville had one triple winner: Ashton Herndon in the varsity divisions of the 1112 boys 50 freestyle, the 11-12 boys 50 butterfly and the 11-12 boys 100 freestyle. The Marlins had two double winners: Aidan Langford in the junior varsity divisions of the 11-12 boys 100 individual medley and the 50 freestyle; and Trevor Gammon in the varsity divisions of 13-14 boys 100 individual medley and the 13-14 boys 100 backstroke. Mechanicsville’s other winners included: Claira McMillion
James River Aquatic Club, and 10 years of swimming in the GRAL. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” Bernstein said. “Between coaching in GRAL and James River, I’ve met some amazing people, amazing kids, and a lot of them have gone on to do amazing things. It’s definitely something that I’ve enjoyed.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com. Team scores: 1. Canterbury 1,063; 2. Wyndham 784; 3. Hungary Creek 590; 4. of their final at-bat in regulation to get away with the win. Albemarle’s rally began win an inning-opening single by Toby Collier. Dylan Berry, while trying to bunt Collier over to second, instead lined out to Post 175 reliever Justin Bishop. Cody Spencer, after a long battle at the plate, walked; and then Chris Hughes hit what should have been a fly out along the left field line. Unfortunately for Post 175, left fielder Hayden Moore – whose vision was obscured by drifting fog – could not bring the ball in. It bounced off his glove in fair territory and the bases were loaded. Albemarle’s leadoff batter,
Dylan Shifflett, battled Bishop to a full count. Bishop’s last pitch was up giving Shifflett a walk as well as the game-winning RBI when Collier trotted across the plate. — Dave Lawrence Eric Kolenich can be reached at ekolenich@times-dispatch. com.

BLUEMONT Continued from pg. 24
In the event of bad weather, the concerts will be held indoors at the Randolph-Macon College Blackwell Auditorium. Everyone is welcome at these family-oriented concerts. Employing renowned musicians across NYC’s diverse jazz, roots and world music scenes, Matuto features guitar, accordion, bass, drums and various Brazilian percussion instruments: the alfaia (a large, wooden, rope-tuned bass drum), the pandeiro (a Brazilian tambourine), the berimbau (a single-string on a bow struck with a small stick),
and the agogô (a pair of small, pitched metal bells.) In May 2013, the band released its second full length album, “The Devil and the Diamond,” on Motéma Music. This recording reflects the inspiring live show that the band has developed over hundreds of performances around the world. Appalachian fiddle tunes bounce with a Northeastern Brazilian lilt while the one string Berimbau resonates with a strangely effective blues riff. Long chromatic melodies are spun over intricate arrangements and infectiously funky folkloric rhythms. With an honest love for roots music, genuine Brazilian styles
