ECHANICSVILLE – A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for a 21-year-old man battling cancer will be held

from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 26) at the Black Creek Baptist Church at 6289 McClellan Rd. in Mechanicsville. Grayson Davis was diagnosed with cancer earlier see MEDICAL, pg. 4

ANOVER — Following the opening of Hanover Tavern’s Coach House earlier this spring, activity at the Hanover landmark has been brisk. The new educational and event center is already attracting a lot of interest, and Tavern executive director David Deal said the increased interest is welcomed. “We’ve already had six wedding receptions and a couple of business meetings,” he said. “This is going to give the Foundation a whole new source of revenue and we’re already seeing it.” A steady stream of brides, parents and industry specialists filed through the building on a recent weekend, taking full advantage of a bridal open house.

Jim Ridolphi for The Local

The Coach House at the Hanover Tavern is already receiving rave reviews from wedding parties who have used the new facility. An open house recently was held for prospective brides and the professionals who support those ceremonies. A steady stream of interested parties viewed the Coach House and several contracts were written. The building is multi-functional and also will enhance educational programs at the Tavern.

“We wanted to let people in the business and anyone interested in planning a wedding see what we have here, to introduce them to the new area,” Deal said.

The event resulted in more signed contracts for the facility, but Deal is ready to show the new building off to the public. The Foundation held two

of its “Tavern Live” series concerts on the landing of the new building, but the real unveiling will coincide see TAVERN, pg. 5

with the county’s role in the upcoming UCI World Cycling Championships scheduled for the area next month. As riders pass by the historic site, spectators will be at the official Fan Zone located at the Tavern as it hosts its “Bikes, Brews and BBQ” viewing party. The time trials will offer Hanover residents a chance to view world class cyclists at their best, and Deal said it’s important for the Tavern to be involved in this once-in-a-lifetime event. “The Tavern was selected as an official timing location of the trial,” Deal said. “We felt strongly that we should offer the Tavern’s grounds as a place for the community to gather and celebrate this international racing spectacle which literally takes place at our doorstep.” The riders will be in Hanover on Wednesday, Sept. 23, and the Tavern will host its

party beginning at 11 a.m. People who attend the Fan Zone are reminded that U.S. 301 will be closed during the trials, so folks should come prepared to spend the afternoon. Attendees are urged to park in the county parking lot across the street from the Tavern, so the site’s parking lot can serve more visitors. Food and beverages will be available. “We plan on turning this place into a real Fan Zone,” Deal said. “This will be a great way to watch the race.” Deal said the race is an important opportunity for Hanover to showcase its wide variety of venues and historical sites. “This event has great potential for Hanover County,” Deal said. “Thousands of people will come and see our county. OPINION | The Local Views

College tuition: feeling the pinch

From the editor

Hello . . . what’s happened to having a conversation? Guilty. Before going any further, there has to be full disclosure. The headline is one this writer must ask herself. In a world filled with emails, texts and direct messages, the idea of engaging in conversation seems to be lost. With family and friends in states across the country, you’d think we’d want to actually talk. But, no, there will be that chime from the iPhone at various hours of the day and night. My mother’s generation may be onto something by clinging to the notion of — get this — making a phone call. Oh, yes, you read right. They use telephones to have conversations. Imagine that! I am not of the generation that has grown up with cell phones and smartphones, but family and friends — some older than me — have embraced the no talking concept. For those who know me, I am a talker. There’s always a story, a memory, an opinion to be shared or offered. Suffice it to say, there are days when that chime sounds and frustration sets in. “Pick up the phone and make a call” roars through my head to whoever the sender might be. These days, if a conversation is taking place, it’s probably via a mobile device. It’s common for us to see people with phones seemingly glued to their ears as they walk or linger on the street or in a store. And then there are those who are driving and talking on a speaker or through Bluetooth. What has happened to a face-to-face “How are you doing today?” conversation? I will readily admit I am addicted to the technology that pretty much consumes our lives. But, there’s something about looking someone in the eye and simply talking — technology-free. Social skills — or the lack thereof — might be traced to the dependence we as a society have on our electronic communication devices. I’d rather be known as a chatterbox than one who lacks the confidence and ability to just strike up a conversation. I definitely relate to the latter. We’re going through this life once — let’s make the most of it and talk, talk, talk. That’s one of the best things about living in the South: We’re friendly and you can always expect a greeting when we pass. Chat it up. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When I entered VCU in 1972, the full time tuition for a Virginia resident was less than $400 a semester. Like many students of that era, I worked my way through college and graduated with less than $1,000 in student loans. While the value of the dollar has changed since the ‘70s, the tuition costs were manageable for most qualified students, and few did not attend college for lack of funds. Today, the value of a college education has dramatically increased in a

technologically demanding job market where good jobs are plentiful for those with the right degree. Experts will tell you that — even with today’s inflated college tuition costs — a degree is still a bargain viewed in the long term. The extra compensation computed over a lifetime far outweighs the seemingly burdensome debt incurred by many students today. My better judgment tells me that college costs that equate to tens of thousands of dollars in student debt might deter some students from getting a higher education.

Even if the financial burden is somehow justified as a means to a better end, the moral responsibility of entering the workforce with enough debt to fund a small yacht is even more intimidating for some. It’s a dilemma that has garnered the attention of some presidential contenders with a few going so far as calling for universal free college for all citizens. It’s an ambitious and lofty goal that seems unattainable in a time of economic uncertainty. But, it’s hard to argue that approach — as dramatic see TUITION, pg. 8

Paving paradise never a good idea I am a 1993 graduate of Atlee High School. I left for college, moved out of state, moved back home, married and relocated as a newlywed to the Hampton “Crowded” Roads area of Virginia. That is where I resided and raised my young family for the past 10 years. Every time I would come home for a visit, I would notice the gradual changes. First it was the American Family/Kroger (which, by the way, is probably going to become another Marketplace.) Applicant Lillie Kreynus is requesting to rezone 15 acres along Route 360 near its intersection with Compass Point Lane from Agricultural, A-1, to General Business, B3, which was “way down” on 360 back then, next the magical appearance of a shopping center on Pole Green Road where a beautiful farm once stood, and then the Rutland mega-center with hundreds of town homes in tow. As I watched little pockets of Mechanicsville fall prey to the same “ideology of convenience” as the suburban area I was residing in near Chesapeake, I became distraught as I realized the sweet charming little town of Mechanicsville in which I grew up was succumbing to the same fate as so many other quaint little communities. After my husband found a job in Richmond last spring, I was finally able to relocate back home. However, home is much different now. There are several new neighborhoods, schools, restaurants and roads.

Some people say it’s progress and that there are so many more options and choices now. I would strongly disagree. They are the same choices that you’ll find everywhere else and a short 5- to 10-minute drive up or down Interstate 295. The “chain stores” will eventually live up to their nickname and have the little mom ’n’ pop stores locked and “chained.” Truth be told, you don’t have to “build high-end townhouses and apartments to keep Hanover’s young adults from relocating.” We know how to “flip” houses, repurpose and shabby chic just about anything … remember, we’re the Pinterest generation. Right now things look pretty harmless. However, I am see LETTERS, pg. 8

Parents of all economic means are feeling the pinch of educating their children, and, nationwide, student debt is at record levels. Locally, there is relief for parents and students who plan early to take advantage of programs that allow college classes while attending high school. In programs initiated in local school systems, Hanover, Goochland and Powhatan offer Advanced College Academies that allow students to graduate high school with an Associate’s Degree and a slew of recog-

nized credits that transfer to colleges across the state. It’s a program that requires dedicated and hard-working students who don’t mind the extra assignments to gain an edge. But, the real value lies in the savings to families who virtually bypass two years of tuition costs, a savings that can add up to thousands of dollars. Point is, investing in our youth by providing them with higher degrees that ensure their future is an investment worth making. In pressing eco-

nomic times, it may be a tough sell in a country where the messenger often takes the most criticism. At the very least, localities working to initiate programs like the College Academy are an important step in addressing an issue that only grows larger each year. After all, the promise of a good education and rewarding career choices only makes a nation stronger. Funding that lofty goal might be a harder nut to crack.

The Foundation, formed in 1990, was organized with a vision of saving the historic tavern. “We have saved the building, implemented vital educational programs and now this building is complete,” Deal said. “We’ll have great food, drink and prizes for people

to win at the Gala, and we want everyone who wants to support the Foundation to attend.” Tickets are available on the Foundation’s website, http:// hanovertavern.org/foundation. “This will be our first fundraising event in the new building,” Deal said.

feared their right to property, or in this case slavery, was threatened. As this issue escalated, the South frequently responded with a call for secession. The federal government then responded with the call that secession constituted treason, a claim against the individuals even though the state was that which would or had seceded. Henry Clay, The Great Compromiser, was frequently there to bring about compro-

of “growth” and “increasing the tax base” is reflected in a quote by Jerry Bailey, the district’s planning commissioner: “If Kroger isn’t there, something is going to go there.” How about we keep the grass, trees and farms there? Isn’t that why we chose to live or relocate to Mechanicsville in the first place? The above mentioned proposal will go before the Hanover County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, Aug. 26. mise when the slavery/secession/treason issue arose. With the election of President Abraham Lincoln, actual secession occurred. South Carolina was the first state to separate or secede from the Union. In 1868, in Texas vs. White, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Union is indissoluble which was previously noted by President Andrew Jackson and President Abraham Lincoln. (See Robert V. Remini in A Short History of the United States.) This court is the final interpreter of the U.S. Constitution. Our Pledge of Allegiance uses the word indivisible. The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution uses the opening phrase “in Order to form a more perfect Union.” In reading Journal of the Federal Convention Kept by James Madison, edited by E.H. Scott, it is clear that secession

was one element the writers of the U.S. Constitution were trying to prevent by creating a perfect union that would be perpetual and indivisible. Whether or not a state has the right to secede under the U.S. Constitution may be an academic question particularly in light of the fact that many states did secede. The federal government considered having the citizens of these states sign loyalty signatures before rejoining the Union four years later. The signatures were not required. However, the seceded states were required to ratify the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution before rejoining. These Amendments are well known to generally address citizenship and voting rights for African Americans. Also note that Amendment 14 states “All persons born or naturalized in the United States … are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” This Amendment, upon ratification, has the effect of claiming citizenship at both

the federal and state level. … Once again, an act that supports indivisible, this time at the individual level. If whether or not the right to secede is an academic question, the appropriate next step may be to look at what happened upon secession in 1860. The Federal government viewed Fort Sumter as federal property. This property was in the seceded state of South Carolina. It seems that the underlying cause of the Civil War was slavery; the tipping point that caused the war was the attempt at provisioning Fort Sumter by the federal government. We all know this is considered the War of Northern Aggression even though President Lincoln notified the governor of the upcoming actions. New initiatives to light up, provide history of town By Meredith Rigsby mrigsby@mechlocal.com

Jim Ridolphi for The Local

King Edward and the BD’s have been rocking Richmond for almost 50 years and have been staples at the Ashland Street Party since its inception in 2004. The band performed Saturday, Aug. 15, as the summer series continues. For more on the summer event, turn to page 23.

ASHLAND — Rosanne Shalf, president of the Ashland Museum, unveiled plans for the museum’s new exhibit concept, “Ashland Museum Inside Out,” during the Tuesday, Aug. 18, meeting of Ashland Town Council. Some of the biggest challenges the museum faces is that it has many historical assets that it does not tell people about and its exhibits have limited visibility due to museum hours, according to Shalf. In an effort to combat some of these challenges, Shalf and museum staff came up with

the idea for Ashland Museum Inside Out, which would bring

available to community members and tourists at all times. With the new exhibit, the Ashland Museum also hopes to reach more audiences via mobile devices, reach those who may not be able to walk some of the museum’s tours, promote heritage tourism and drive economic activity, Shalf said. As part of the Ashland Inside Out exhibit project, the Ashland Museum plans to place four area signs and 20 historic building signs around town. The four area signs will be located at the Visitor’s Center see COUNCIL, pg. 25

Procedurally, how can federal and state property and services be separated? It seems too entwined to be easy. Clarke Mercer, another ASP organizer, said the group is already busy preparing for the international crowd. “We’re gearing up for the September party when the bike race comes to town,” he said. “But, tonight’s crowd for the August event is awesome. Atlee, Glen Allen golfers overcome C-feds By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MANQUIN – Two of the better golf teams in Conference 11 visited Lee-Davis at Queenfield Golf Club Wednesday, and both – despite some struggles on the deceptively simple course – demonstrated how good they were. Atlee, led by Erica Whitehouse, and Glen Allen, led by Celadon Ramsey, both posted a 165 to top the Confederates, who posted a 181 on the day. And Whitehouse and Ramsey – who both competed in the Virginia High School League girls golf championships last year – tied for medalist honors at 39. Just four strokes separated the top four for the Raiders and Jaguars. Atlee’s Ben Shields finished second at a 4-over par 40. Glen Allen’s Cameron Moore finished third with a 41. The Jaguars’ Holden Davis finished in a tie for fourth Lee-Davis’ Bryan Diehr at 42, and Atlee’s Spencer Talley and Alex Freeman and Glen Allen’s Cameron Cook finished in a three-way tie for fifth at 43. While Queenfield is fairly flat, the narrow fairways lined with trees often proves a challenge for golfers. “This is always a tough course for us for some reason,” said Glen Allen’s golf coach Brendan Rossner. “I think to

bers. I figured the Glen Allen girl would be No. 1.” Rossner was pleased with Ramsey’s finish. “Celadon is an exceptional golfer,” Rossner said. “She really played well last year – the end of last year – and she’s carried that momentum into this season. We definitely look for big

things out of her.” This is the last year that Whitehouse and Ramsey will go head-to-head at the high school level. Whitehouse is in her senior year at Atlee, while Ramsey has more time left at Glen Allen – and, like Whitehouse, a lot of responsibility.

“She’s a junior this year, but she’s definitely one of the leaders on the team,” Rossner said. “At times, she looks like one of the best golfers in the state. She can play some great golf, no doubt about it.” Thompson said the Raiders are doing pretty well given the profusion of new faces – includ-

ing his as coach – on the team. “We have a bunch of young kids out here,” Thompson said. “We only start one senior at any time out of six. So it’s young, and me being a new coach, everything’s kind of new. So I can’t complain. We placed fifth at Chesdin. We won one at [The Crossings]. We won yesterday out at Thomas Dale. And to tie today is fine. Not bad.” Lee-Davis coach Kenny Lewis said 180ish seems to be the Confederates’ average in a nine-hole match. “Other than the anomaly – the disaster – at The Crossings, it’s been our number,” said Lewis, whose team had posted a 199 Monday in a match with Atlee, Patrick Henry and Henrico. “That’s been our number. It’s not a pretty number, not one we’re comfortable with, but [180 has] been our number.” Lewis has been rotating the order of golfers as he tinkers with his lineup. “We’ve just moved a few kids. The difference between them is negligible, just a stroke or two,” Lewis said. “The kids don’t care about the order. They’re trying really hard to lower their scores. I think it’s just a matter of getting that golf game to come around. They’ve been playing baseball and wrestling and doing other things.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Boys volleyball teams face new conference lineups By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover boys volleyball teams face a changed conference landscape, and the lineup at the beginning of the season may change yet again before conference tournament play begins in October. This year, Atlee and Patrick Henry officially begin their season in Conference 11, along with Deep Run, Douglas Freeman, Lee-Davis and Mills Godwin. There is a chance that the Raiders and Patriots may be reassigned to Conference 12 with Highland Springs, Matoaca, Prince George and Varina – a move that, if it happens, will allow more strong teams from both conferences to earn berths in their conference tournaments. Atlee Atlee head coach Nick Robinson hopes the Raiders and Patriots will be able to make the move to Conference 12. They cannot play in Conference 16 because there are too few boys’ volleyball teams there, and it’s already pretty crowded in Conference 11. “Conference 11 already has eight teams in it, which, adding us and Patrick Henry to that, would give it 10 teams, six of which are pretty good,” Robinson said. That really doesn’t work out best for anybody, in my opinion. There’s some teams that belong in Conference 11 that might not make the playoffs because of us and Patrick Henry-Ashland, and it’s not fair to us that don’t really play in that Conference throughout the year to have to get put for post-season play, either.” Robinson said Conference 16 has only six teams, so their move there would balance out

34

the lineups and benefit the better teams in the region. “Traditionally, the teams that are left in Conference 12 are not ones that have long postseason runs, with the exception maybe of Highland Springs,” Robinson said. “Manchester and Clover Hill … have traditionally been the better teams in Conference 12, and those schools are gone now [to Group 6A], leaving a void there of their top two teams. Moving us and Patrick Henry there would not be a bad thing for us, for sure.” The Raiders lost four starters from its Virginia High School League Group 5A state semifinalist team to graduation last year, but return four to form the core of yet another strong Atlee squad: middle blocker/outside hitter Chui Elliott, opposite/outside hitter Jacob Rehmer-Stephens, outside hitter Eric Rohr and setter Owen Ward, all seniors. “I feel our team this year may be a little stronger than last year’s team, actually, just based on the personnel I have returning,” Robinson said. “I’m Dave Lawrence/The Local returning my setter. County field hockey teams begin 2015 campaign By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – While school won’t start for another two weeks, all four of Hanover County’s field hockey teams go into regular season action this week. This year, two of the teams, Hanover and Patrick Henry, have new head coaches. Atlee hopes for a return to the Virginia High School League Group 5A state tournament, and Lee-Davis hopes to make a decent run in the playoffs. Atlee The Raiders advanced to the state semifinals last year. While they lost five starters to graduation last year, they return a strong squad with a good chance at a return visit to the state tournament. “We’ve got good strength coming up,” said Atlee head coach Alyssa Farling. Farling said the Raiders will most miss midfielder Jamari Blackwell. “Jamari Blackwell, our center midfielder, is about the fastest person I’ve ever met,” Farling said. “She’s a noticeable loss. Her speed – she was all over the field. We’re playing with two center midfielders right now, an

You don’t see that a lot with sophomores, but it’s a group that comes and works hard every day.” He also has some key returning players, including senior setter Clayton Marshall. “Clayton Marshall is a great senior leader,” Brown said. “He’s one of those guys who makes everyone around him better and can help push those

offensive and defensive center mid, and that’s working out.” One key returnee is goalkeeper Numa Rehmani, who looked strong in a scrimmage against Clover Hill Thursday. “I think we look strong,” Farling said. “We’re in good condition, well-conditioned in the off-season, so we don’t have to worry about that. We just focus on strategy and skills, and I think we look good. And we’re communicating.” Hanover The Hawks begin the year with a new head coach, Sarah Rowe, who begins the year with a bit of butterflies. “I’m anxious about the season, that’s for sure,” said Rowe, a former varsity field hockey player who is in her second year of teaching at Hanover. “I’m definitely new to coaching.” Despite her butterflies, Rowe’s Hawks won a scrimmage at New Kent last week, so she’s feeling OK – so far. She said the team brings a lot of its own motivation. “They really enjoy the game and really don’t like losing – as much as I don’t,” Rowe said. “So they work really hard and they want to do well. It’s really nice to have a team that’s like that.”

Lee-Davis The Confederates had a relatively young team last year. But even with the graduation of three starters, they begin the year again with a relatively young team, with three seniors – forward Lauren Wolfgang and defenders Kayla Currie and Hailey Graves – returning. Still, the Confederates are rebuilding in the critical middle of their lineup, where they lost yet another starter, Lane Courter, to a knee injury. They will get some help there from a senior exchange student, midfielder Justine Anneveld. “She’s got a lot of experience – plays a little bit like Lane, so that helps,” Lee-Davis head coach Merridee Gibson said of Dave Lawrence/The Local Anneveld. “But we’re young, young. We start six sophomores Atlee goalkeeper Numa Rehmani stops a tiebreaker shot by Clover Hill’s Calista Yost in a scrimmage at Atlee Thursday. Conference 11. The profusion of strong boys volleyball teams in that conference meant the Patriots were left in the cold at playoff time. “This year, in the last three years, it will be my second district and third conference,” Townsend said. Townsend said his team needs to focus on the skills most other teams need to focus on: ball control and passing. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
