MECHANICSVILLE — After nearly three years of planning and fundraising, and lots of volunteer hours, the Pole Green Dog Park is finally a reality. The public is invited to attend the grand opening of the dog park at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. Grand opening festivities will include speakers, a ribbon cutting ceremony, live music and a vendor area. After the ceremony, visitors will have the
opportunity to speak with dog park volunteers and representatives from Hanover County Parks & Recreation, Hanover County Animal Control and the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. The park was made possible through the efforts of Friends of Hanover Dog Parks, a nonprofit organization whose stated purpose is “promoting the health and welfare of companion animals and their owners through education and recreation.” The dog park sits on 1.2 acres located inside Mechanicsville’s Pole Green Park, just adjacent to the equestrian center.

Pedestrian hurt in hit and run; IDs of suspects needed Staff Report news@mechlocal.com The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects involved in a hit and run crash involving a pedestrian. According to Maj. Michael J. Trice, deputies responded to the 8300 block of Westerden Drive in the Brooks Hollow subdivision in Mechanicsville around 7:35 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, for the report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Witnesses reported that a dark colored compact model pickup truck, similar to a Ford Ranger, struck a female pedestrian on Wetherden Drive and fled the scene at a high rate of speed toward Brooks Hollow Parkway. Trice said that the suspect vehicle was occupied by an
unknown driver and a white female passenger. Under Virginia law, Trice added, drivers have a duty to stop and report traffic accidents involving injury or property damage. If the driver fails to stop and report the accident, every person 16 years of age or older in the vehicle with the driver at the time of the accident has the same duty to report the accident within 24 hours of the incident. Anyone with information about this incident, the identity of the driver or passenger, or the suspect vehicle is asked to contact the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office at 804-365-6140 or the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. Citizens also can text Crime Stoppers at 274637 (CRIMES), using the keyword “iTip” followed by their tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.

the parking lot adjacent to the free-standing emergency department provided by HCA Virginia. The beer garden will feature all of the brewery’s yearround beers, both in cans and on draft, as well as its seasonal Oktoberfest beer. “I mean, this is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing to be a part of. Even though we will be there in a working capacity, we are looking forward to hanging out and watching the professional racers go by,” said Chris Ray, co-founder of Center of the Universe. “It’s something truly unique, and with school being canceled I know my family is going to be out there and a lot of our neighbors as something fun to do.” The race that is taking place on the day of the Hanover Bike Fest is the Men’s Elite Individual Time
Trials. The Elite Men will begin their “Race of Truth” at Kings Dominion and make their way down U.S. 301, directly in front of Rutland Commons, allowing attendees to get a front row seat to the action. “It’s a pretty big deal to have this coming to Richmond, and I don’t think everyone realizes how big bike racing is across the world,” David Donaldson, COO of HCA Virginia, said. “Hopefully the festivities we are putting together will be unique for the community members of Hanover and they will get front row viewing of what’s happening.” HCA Virginia owns the small patch of grass in front of Rutland Commons where Hanover residents will be able to watch contestants speed past. The organization also will
have a group of volunteers helping with the event. Also at the Hanover Bike Fest, The Arc of Hanover, a nonprofit organization that serves adults and children with developmental disabilities, will be selling $5 tickets for three chances to dunk a politician or candidate for political office. Hanover legislators and candidates participating in “The Dunk of Truth” include: Delegates Chris Peace and Buddy Fowler; Faye Prichard, Glenn Millican, Toni Radler, Web Stokes and Debbie Repp. The dunking book will be located near Dunkin Donuts at the Rutland Fan Zone. OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
Cyclists bring a new kind of excitement “Get your motor runnin’. Head out on the highway.” No, wait, wrong kind of bikes. OK, then, think Lance Armstrong. That won’t work either — the whole doping issue after seven consecutive victories in the Tour de France placed him in the disgraced category. Seriously, though, let’s look at what is taking place throughout the region. The 2015 UCI World Cycling Championships are bringing a unique excitement, as well as — and let’s all say “Thank you” — revenuegenerating opportunities to the Greater Richmond area. We’re rolling out the welcome mat in a huge way for this event, and, while there will be some changes in routines due to traffic pattern changes, the idea of such a major sport literally rolling through here is incredible. Ch-ching will be heard all around the metro area. And thank you to Hanover County government leaders — led by the board of supervisors — for making sure we are spotlighted and playing a role in the event. To all the supporters of the cycling championships, we extend a sincere thank you. With the realization of what it means to Hanover County and the other localities in and around Richmond, we are thrilled to join in showcasing the best we have to offer. We’re organizing our schedules to coordinate with the time frame in which the cyclists will be going down U.S. 301 near our offices today. But, without question, we welcome their arrival. Steppenwolf and Armstrong aside, this truly is an event that shows the world what makes the place we call home so special. Ride on!

They run for the kids who can’t By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Watching football is probably the last thing on the to-do list of parents who have children with muscular dystrophy (MD) … most of the time. On Saturday, Sept. 26, most of them will make an exception and tune
in to see coaches from around the country unite for one cause. And while winning and losing are usually foremost on the minds of these competitive leaders, they’ll embark on a mission that brings new meaning to those words. Each September, coaches from across the nation wear armbands with the words “Coach to Cure” on
them. It’s an effort to raise awareness and money for muscular dystrophy research and treatment, and represents a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Parent Project for Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). PPMD is a nonprofit organizasee RUN, pg. 8

All lives matter must be words that we all live by As a retired Officer of the Court who worked with many law enforcement officers for over 20 years, I have seen my share of crime scenes. It does not matter the color of your skin, your gender or your religious beliefs. When a family loses a loved one to criminal activity, there is a pain and hurt that cannot be described. Baltimore, Maryland, as of this date has had over 212 homicide victims in the city. This surpasses the total for all of 2014 with about four months still left in this year. Across the United States, cities have been experiencing a surge in murders and violent crimes. Milwaukee has already topped its 2014 violent crimes mark. Ask the families of those victims: Do the lives of their loved ones matter? Dr. Ellen Page, a Northwestern University criminologist, states that the day when all human beings begin to accept each other as human beings without labels and socioeconomic lines, then crime and murders will decrease in the future. Yes, all lives matter! The only known planet that humans live on is earth. If we cannot accept each other as human beings and continue to commit crimes and murders, then this is a waste of human existence. John T. Boyd Jr. Mechanicsville
Local resident praises HCSB, HCBOS relationship I attend almost all Hanover County School Board meetings as well as Hanover County Board of Supervisors and I do not believe a better working relationship exists anywhere than between these two boards.
Every supervisor supports Hanover County Public Schools 100 percent all the time. Under the excellent leadership of Bob Hundley [chair] and the hard work of and outstanding staff, the Hanover County School Board produces budgets that reflect good judgment and restraint every time. Supervisors Sean Davis, Canova Peterson and Wayne Hazzard [chair] do not deserve any criticism for commenting on a policy when the issue became public. This issue was dealt with in an appropriate and timely fashion. Everyone but the education (teachers’ union) lobby moved on. A teacher turnover rate of 7 percent is three points below the state average. Very good for a work group this size. The total compensation package for teachers is so good it can be called generous. The Hanover County Board of Supervisors gives the Hanover County Public Schools every penny they ask for. My one complaint is a weakness on math and English in the core curriculum. These two subjects are the foundation on which all worthwhile learning rest. The entire Hanover County Board of Supervisors supports the Hanover County Public Schools completely all the time. see LETTERS, pg. 8

I was glad to see the young lady quote Socrates. When he speaks of filling our vessel he means fill it with what you have to know, what you need to know and what will serve you well when you have to do real critical thinking. In a time of need if you reach into your vessel and pull out anything banned by any Hanover County School Board policy and try to apply it to any real life issue you will make a big boo-boo. If you fill your vessel with knowledge that has served mankind well for thousands of years when you pull something out, it will serve you as well. Prime rib in, prime rib out, garbage in, garbage out. There is a difference. It’s time to turn the page and move on. This issue was not important in the first place. To see Plato, Aristotle and Socrates brought into conversation is a joy. These giants of philosophy are as relevant now as they were in their lifetime.
and me. My son Jack suffers from Duchenne, the most critical form of MD. PPMD offers a glimmer of hope for families like mine where sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and maybe, more accurately, hopeless. During the week leading up to the Coach to Cure Saturday, teams invite MD patients to their practices, interact with the kids and get a first-hand look at real life challenges. They quickly realize that challenges on the field are only minor when compared to the daily struggle that MD kids endure. For the past four years, Coach Joe Fowler’s Goochland Bulldogs have hosted a Coach to Cure event, and Jack serves
as honorary guest. He spends time with his favorite football team and flips the coin to open the contest. It’s an emotional experience for me as kids who have spectacular muscles that work better than OK take a moment to know a kid who will never score a touchdown or make an important tackle. The players realize that, and, somehow, they share their enormous abilities with Jack — and watching them run somehow makes him feel better. I’ve often said they run for the kids who can’t. Words fall woefully short of expressing the personal appreciation and admiration I have for Coach Fowler, his team and the whole GHS family for caring about Jack and
other kids suffering from MD. It’s a special evening for him, but, more importantly, it’s an opportunity for the Bulldogs to show their true character and compassion. The team takes on Randolph Henry for this year’s Coach to Cure event, but they’ll be challenging a much more intimidating opponent in their minds as they fight and win for kids, except for Jack, they have never met. Please join us on Friday, Sept. 25, for this year’s Coach to Cure game. It’s homecoming at Goochland, so come early and stay late. I’m sure the Bulldogs won’t disappoint with the final score, but, in reality, they are winners in my mind long before the opening whistle sounds.
I also was glad to see Dante brought into the conversation as well. Can anyone believe teachers employed by Hanover County Public Schools have abandoned all hope? Hanover County teachers have it made. Only the education (teachers’ union) lobby would dare make any such claim. When I reflect on Dante, I think of his “Inferno.” Dante’s “Inferno” would be a good place to put liberal education policy, liberal social policy, liberal energy policy, liberal economic policy, political correctness and the education (teachers’ union) lobby. If we did this, the ambience of the “Inferno” would be enhanced and the earth would be a better place. While we are at it, we should throw in the administration at the University of Virginia. I have never seen so much incompetence, bad judgment and serious mistakes made in so short a time. After all, nothing happened. After the lawyers get through with these people, into the “Inferno” they go.
Let us not forget recent events at Virginia Commonwealth University. They were forced to revise their policy on “relationships” between students and professors. It seems these professors were taking unfair sexual advantage of our children and grandchildren. The “Inferno” was made for these “professors.” In the secular progressive world of the modern college campus some words are considered impediments to the implementation of their agenda. Ethics, morals, judgment, responsibility, accountability and professional conduct are just some of these. Just insert all traditional American values. Secular progressives hate them all. They prove it every day. Just look at UVa and VCU. Larnie C. Allgood Mechanicsville
“Superintendent search moves into high gear” causes me once again to ask, “Why waste the money?” How many times in the past have we spent the money only to find that the best person for the job has been in Hanover County Public Schools the whole time. I predict this time will not be different. When was the last time someone was hired from the “outside?” Never may be the answer. We all know that if we hire an outsider, they may not be inclined to be as good an insider as an insider we already have would be. Lord help us if we should look outside and end up with an absolute genius from somewhere else in the U.S. I understand geniuses can be difficult to work with. How about this? I have made the prediction. Give me the $25,000 and if my prediction does not come true, I will give back $28,000 to the county, a $3,000 profit for doing nothing. Ted Mentz Old Church

Logistics of Light Up the Tracks project clarified Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – The proposed Light Up the Tracks project took center stage during the Tuesday, Sept. 15, regular meeting of Ashland Town Council. A marketing event, Light Up the Tracks aims to transform Ashland’s downtown railroad corridor into a “postcard of holiday lights,” high-
lighting commercial structures in an effort to generate more foot traffic and economic activity for businesses and the town. This project will target the areas north of Myrtle Street and south of Henry Clay Street and College Avenue. When Dan Bartges, one of the project leaders and a member of the board of the Ashland Main Street Association, previously approached
council about the initiative, the main concern was who would pay for the lights and who would install them. Since that meeting, town manager Charles Hartgrove has met with Public Works officials and employees to assess concerns about the structural details of the 18 buildings that would be decorated, how the lights could be strung without causing damage to the buildings and
liability issues. The town’s insurance company, for liability reasons, is not comfortable with town staff and employees working on private property to put up the lights, Hartgrove said. In an effort to curb some of the liability concerns, Bartges has spoken with a private contractor, Terrell’s Tree & Lawn Service, which would see TRACKS, pg. 17

SHLAND — Scary movie fans in Central Virginia have a unique opportunity on Saturday, Sept. 26, when legendary horror movie host, the Bowman Body, comes to the big screen at the Ashland Theater for a special onetime showing of two new Shock Theater episodes shot in August. During the 1970s and 1980s, Bill Bowman played the Bowman Body, a charmingly optimistic ghoul who hosted movies that were often more horrible than horrifying, but he and his audience had great fun with even the worst of the lot. The character was on in three different Virginia markets, but is best remem-

be willing to string the lights on the buildings using a bucket truck, volunteers and staff. Glen Terrell, owner of the company, said he estimates the lights could be installed on all the buildings in three to four days for a cost of $4,000, Bartges said. “We’ve also, I think, talked to every shop manager and, I think now, every building owner and we haven’t had one disparaging word about this,â€? Bartges said. “Everybody seems so excited about this idea; they all seem to share the vision that this will truly bring a lot of new people and shoppers to the town.â€? To help spread the word about the event, Bartges also is in talks with executives from CSX and Amtrak. We are “asking Amtrak if they can bring their weight to work with the national media because we frankly don’t have the gravitas for that, but they do, and certainly CSX does,â€? Bartges said. ‌ “The rumor is they [CSX] just think this would be one of the coolest things to see from a small town in celebration basically of train travel.â€? In addition to buying the fixtures to hang the holiday lights, Bartges also would like to hire in a certified electrical engineer to meet with Terrell’s Tree & Lawn Service to ensure all parties know what needs to be done in order for the lights to work well and be installed safely. Terrell’s Tree & Lawn Service would remove the lights after the event is over, most likely leaving the fixtures in an effort to limit structural damage, Bartges said. The Ashland Main Street Association has budgeted for the cost of the lights, Bartges said. But with the cost of extension cords, timers and other small, unexpected expenses, he asked that town council set aside $7,500 for the project.
“I think this would be a oneof-a-kind experience because of our unique downtown and how special that is, and I think it would clearly be a viral opportunity with mass and social media, Hartgrove said. “I think the overall concept’s a great idea; I think it would be very aesthetically pleasing; I think it would be a great interest in a lot of our downtown businesses and just Ashland in general. I’m very appreciative of the time that our volunteers have put into this. As part of the Light Up the Tracks event, there also will be a tree illumination on the area of land in front of

Ashland Coffee and Tea, which is owned by Randolph-Macon College. The college has said it would provide water to sustain the tree and electric outlets for the tree’s lights. Mike Hildebrand, one of the owners of James River Nursery, has volunteered to take down the selected holiday tree from its original location, transport it to town, erect it and stabilize it, all at no cost, Bartges said. The shrubbery around the tree will be lit with five tiers of white lights and the holiday tree will be decorated with oldtimey colored lights. As far as the request to council for $7,500 to support the project, Hartgrove said there is no amount in a line item to provide the funds. Bartges said he does not
anticipate the project will require the entire $7,500 amount. “We are going to make a big effort to get the community to donate, and I see no reason at all why that money shouldn’t come back for repayment, he said. “This particular event will come back so many times in excess of what we would spend on it that it would be absolutely worthwhile to pursue, added council member James Murray. “I think one of the things we have to think about longterm is what we’re going to do in terms of making sure that this continues over the long haul and part of that is going to be figuring out a long term budget, said council member Faye O. Prichard. Town attorney Andrea Erard said she was comfortable with the liability aspects of the project and town council passed a motion “to provide an amount up to $7,500 to Main Street Association for reimbursement of expenses related to the Light Up the Tracks event. After discussion, local resident Ragan Phillips and his wife Phyllis Theroux pledged $500 in support of the Light Up the Tracks project. In other business, Hugh Joyce, executive director of the Ashland Main Street Association, provided an update on the organization’s activities and initiatives, and Ashland Police Chief Douglas Goodman reminded the community about emergency preparedness steps they should take to ensure their safety during unexpected situations. The consent agenda was approved, which included a referral of ORD2015-18, Motel Revisions/Zoning, to the Ashland Planning Commission. The next Ashland Town Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Town Hall, located at 101 Thompson St. in Ashland.

Skate park improvements set Drug Take-Back Day to be to get underway on Monday held at two locations Saturday
M E C HA N IC S V I L L E — Hanover County Parks and Recreation invited the public to share their input on changes they’d like to see at the counties only skate park. After a month of online and in person feedback, the Pole Green Skate Park will have modifications to the elements beginning on Monday, Sept. 28. The skate park is located at Pole Green Park at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville. The department has a lim-
ited amount of money, but will be making modifications that have the most impact. Dan Smith, the department’s deputy director, has these changes earmarked: One quarter pipe that is damaged along with a portion of the 90-degree hip will be removed, a new side rail will be installed. Part of the adjustments will include making space for future improvements to the facility based on feedback that was provided by users. The skate park is a place where people will be able to
experience the elements that they helped design and have input on. The skate park will be closed from Monday, Sept. 28, through Friday, Oct. 2. For more information, contact Hanover County Parks & Recreation at www.hanovercounty.gov, 804-365-7150 or parksandrec@hanovercounty. gov. Information submitted by Nikodemas M. Reikalas, recreation coordinator, Hanover County Parks & Recreation.

donors, our Hanover churches that helped move our mission forward, ‘Putting God’s love into action,’ our schools, our Hanover government officials
and employees, our community-minded business leaders and on and on.” He said that his work with Hanover Habitat and the Hanover community “has been the highlight of my 30 years in the nonprofit sector.” “After eight years, leaving is bittersweet for me,” Bowring added. “The timing is right for me and the organization. I am a social entrepreneur, a creative, out-of the-box thinker. My strengths are startups and turnarounds. The organization is now very stable and needs management-based leader-
ship.” He said that he was “so sad to be going but very excited about the future. In the short term I will be consulting with the Habitat for Humanity Virginia State Support Organization. This will give me time to pursue another of my passions, radio. Over the years I have hosted three different weekly radio shows. I have had the honor of interviewing a vast array of amazing people from Gen. Barry McCaffrey, President Clinton’s drug czar; artist Xu Bing, who is considered one of the most
important Chinese artists of his generation; as well as the best of VCU’s School of the Arts professors and artists.” In leaving Bowring said, “I wish Hanover County and Hanover Habitat for Humanity all the best as they strive to meet the growing need for affordable housing for all of Hanover’s residents.” As for Bowring’s departure, John Hodges, president of the board of directors of Hanover Habitat for Humanity, said, “We appreciate him for his service and the accomplishments, the most recent ones being the
completion of our first subdivision, Bailey Woods, and the second being both the moves of the ReStore and Habitat office to Atlee Road.” Marisa Booker is currently serving as interim executive director while Hanover Habitat for Humanity searches for someone to fill Bowring’s position. A job description has been posted on ConnectVA, a virtual nonprofit and civic hub, according to Hodges. Hanover Habitat hopes to fill the vacancy within two months.
citizen and work hard,” Abasiu Muhammad said. “We’ve been through so much, we came from Afghanistan, so we came from a civil war, my parents went through very difficult times, not just financially but just security and safety. Coming to the United States and feeling safe and secure and welcomed — you know welcomed by this country — it’s a big honor,” Abasiu Muhammad’s sister Ossai Muhammad said. “I had an opportunity to go to school; I’m currently in Pharmacy
School,” she said. “My brother who never had education, he was able to get his GED, go to school. … All the doors are open, you know. I came here, we didn’t speak English, we didn’t have education, but we [are] working towards it, so it’s a great honor to be here.” For the second year, Daniel Johnson, board member of the Montpelier Arts and Activities Center, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Johnson said his favorite part about being involved in the naturalization ceremony is
seeing “The little children, they don’t know what’s going on, but to think the new life that’s going to be afforded them, I love seeing the little children,” he said. Following their naturalization oath, Magistrate Judge David J. Novak congratulated the new American citizens saying, “As former president Teddy Roosevelt stated, ‘Americanism is a question of principles of idealism of character, it is not a matter of birthplace, or creed, or line of descent.’ So today you have sworn an oath of allegiance to
far more than a government; you have confirmed your belief in opportunity and unlimited horizons, a fundamental belief that all people are free, free to pursue their dreams.” Dozens of students from Trinity Episcopal School also attended the ceremony, and, following the Pledge of Allegiance, congratulated each new United States citizen and gifted them with a small American flag. Parents seek prayer for daughter Jazelle Marie McCormick suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm on Aug. 2 Staff Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – Jazelle Marie McCormick of Mechanicsville recently suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. Her parents, Danny and Vanessa Conyers, are asking the community to remember their daughter in prayer. On Sunday, Aug. 2, Jazelle collapsed and was unresponsive to paramedics. She was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. According to her mother, when she
arrived at the hospital, her survival rate was considered “slim” as she remained in a comatose state. “Although Jazelle is still in critical condition,” her mother recently told The Local, “we have seen improvement. As our daughter goes through the McCORMICK next several weeks, she will continue to have more medical
procedures; therefore, we’d like to ask you to continue to lift her up in prayer.” Vanessa added, “We have already experienced two of God’s miracles and truly believe Jazelle will survive and be a walking testimony for God’s mercy, goodness and grace.” A registered nurse, Jazelle is a single mother of two, a 16-year-old son and a 1year-old daughter. Vanessa said that there is a Facebook page, Jazelle’s Journey, and a Go Fund Me account, where updates are posted and donations and prayers are accepted.

Hanover goes south to pound Blue Devils By Arthur Utley For The Mechanicsville Local HOPEWELL – The Hanover Hawks traveled deep into Central District territory for the second time this year and discovered playing without quarterback Clayton Cheatham in the lineup is not so different from having him running and passing the ball. The Hawks, currently ranked No. 5 in The Richmond Times-Dispatch Top 10, opened their season with a road victory over fellow 4A South member Dinwiddie on Sept. 4, but Cheatham, one of the metro area’s top players, broke a bone in his right leg late in the game and is likely to miss six to eight weeks. Running back Marcus Bazala, the other half of Hanover’s one-two backfield punch, took over at QB last week and guided the Hawks to a victory over J.R. Tucker. Bazala was even better Friday night against Hopewell. A 5-foot-8, 200-pound senior, Bazala carried the ball a Cheathamesque 37 times for 246 yards and three touchdowns to lead Hanover (3-0) to a 24-19 victory over Hopewell (2-1) at Merner Field. “I’m exhausted, but it’s a great team win. We really played our hearts out. We played four quarters. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Bazala said. He had 16 carries for 112

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Randolph-Macon finished the first half even with host Methodist (North Carolina), but despite an offense that gained more total yardage than the Monarchs, the Yellow Jackets could not hold on for the win. Methodist took advantage of a 14-point third quarter to stake itself to a two-touchdown lead, which it successfully defended with a 31-24 victory. Randolph-Macon (12) reached the red zone in the fourth quarter three times, but managed to convert only one of the three opportunities for a score. The Yellow Jackets saw their final chance to score end in an interception in the end zone. Randolph-Macon was led by quarterback Billy see R-MC, pg. 33
Errant pass ends Atlee rally against Rebels By Weldon Bradshaw For The Mechanicsville Local RICHMOND – The postgame delirium was in full swing, but Mike Henderson stood calmly amidst the revelry and explained the formula for his Douglas Freeman Rebels’ 21-14 victory over No. 9 Atlee on Friday night. “Stop the big play,” the veteran coach said. “Don’t turn the ball over on offense. “We knew if we did that, we’d win the game.” Success didn’t come easily or quickly, however, against the Raiders’ high-octane, no-huddle offense. Quarterback Rasharrd Harris lit up the home team with 27 completions in 43 passing attempts for 324 yards and two touchdowns. “We didn’t stop him,” Henderson continued, “but we slowed him up enough. We gave up 14 points against a high-powered offense, and we scored a touchdown. “Great defensive effort. Bent but didn’t break.” The Raiders (2-1) scored first on a 38-yard connection from Harris to Justin Hall at 5:46 of the initial period to end a six-play, 65-yard drive. As the second quarter began, they were threatening again, but Freeman cornerback

Dominic Elyardo picked off a pass at the 1-yard line and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to enable the Rebels to pull even. “I was backpedaling,” Elyardo said. “I read the quarterback’s eyes. Once the ball got
in the air, I knew I couldn’t give that chance up.” Unfazed, Atlee responded with a 10-play, 79-yard drive that ended with a 33-yard TD pass from Harris to Hall and sent the Raiders into halftime up 14-7.
Freeman (3-0) struck again late in the third period. On the first snap of a drive that began on their 27, quarterback Trey Laughlin scrambled 28 yards to the Atlee 45. On the ensuing play, Jordan Smith raced 18 yards to the 27.
Then, the Rebels went deep – Laughlin to Elyardo – and the 6-foot-2, 178-pound senior leaped high despite the coverage to haul in Laughlin’s pinpoint offering. “We went from a spread look,” Elyardo said. “Everyone
the second half. Hanover’s grind it out offense ran the ball more than 50 times against the smaller Blue Devils. “We’re built off our offensive line. Our line is amazing. They push us; they’re the heart of this team,” Bazala said. Hanover’s defense kept Hopewell’s versatile offense from breaking any big plays. The Blue Devils rang up 477 yards of total offense last
week against Powhatan. They scratched out 295 against the Hawks, but junior quarterback Cameren Hill had his bell rung a couple of times. A safety and an 11-yard touchdown pass from backup QB Jacob Rockwell to Ronnie Walker late in the fourth quarter ended the scoring. “The plan was to stick with what we’re doing. We knew we had to get better on defense
and we did. Offensively we were trying to get after it. Trying to pound the ball,” Hanover coach Derek Stoudt said. “[The Blue Devils] did a great job at first. They were fast, they were shooting gaps. They were disrupting everything…we made some subtle adjustments and let our guys up front wear them down.” Arthur Utley can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

just goes deep into the end zone. “Trey and I looked at each other. We knew. He trusts me. I trust him.” After Freeman stopped Atlee three-and-out, the Rebels launched a quick, 70-yard drive that included a 39-yard Laughlin-to-Adam Adulewicz connection and ended with a 20-yard slant off the right side by Smith at 9:57 of the final quarter. “We were trying to use the motion to space ‘em out. That allowed us to run inside,” said Laughlin. “And also, we found out matchups on the outside. We have some great receivers, and we got some matchups that we thought were favorable. “We just found a way to win. That’s what we’ve done all season.” As the clock wound down at William E. Long Stadium, the Raiders launched one final assault, but on first-and-10 from the 14, the Rebels forced Harris to throw incomplete as time expired. “The defense was great,” said Nick Ackies, a tackle in Douglas Freeman’s 4-3 alignment. “We never give up. We’ll always keep going. We never stop fighting.” Weldon Bradshaw can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

Wilkinson’s 35 lifts Hawks past Raiders, Patriots By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor GLEN ALLEN – Hanover golfer Ward Wilkinson, with 1under-par 35, gave the Hawks just what they needed to edge a remarkably consistent Atlee on the Raiders’ home course in a match that included Patrick Henry on the front nine at The Crossings Thursday. The Hawks rolled a 156 to Atlee’s 159. Patrick Henry came in third with a 173. The other three Hanover scorers – Cole Hodges with a 39 and Robert Martin and Jack Proctor with 41 apiece – rolled a combined score of 121. The Raiders’ final three scor-
ers – Erica Whitehouse, Timmy Shields and Daniel Anderson – each rolled a 40 for a combined score of 120, one stroke better than Hanover’s lower trio. The difference between the two teams lay in the score of the teams’ top scorer, with Atlee’s Jacob Harmon four strokes back of Wilkinson. “It’s not too bad, but it could have been better,” Wilkinson said of his score. “That’s how golf goes.” Wilkinson said he likes the pressure of playing against other top golfers, such as Atlee’s Whitehouse and Patrick Henry’s Andrea Dill, who finished second with a 2-over 38. “It was a lot of fun play-

ing that well,” Wilkinson said. “When you’re playing with people that are good, you especially play better. Erica’s good. Andrea’s good. They’re both very good competitors.” Atlee coach Steve Thompson expected a close match. “It was close last time,” Thompson said. “It’s a great matchup and it’s going to be great for both teams going into the conference [tournaments].” He said the Hawks overtook the Raiders on the final holes. “Everything was going pretty evenly throughout and then they got us on the last couple of holes,” Thompson said. “It’s a learning experience and, like I said, it’s great going forward because that’s the kind of pressure they’re going to be under in the conference tournament.” Patrick Henry coach Dave

Above, Hanover’s Ward Wilkinson hits a drive on the first hole at The Crossings in a match against Atlee and Patrick Henry Thursday. Wilkinson’s 1-under par 35 lifted the Hawks to victory. Left, Atlee’s Erica Whitehouse hits out of a bunker on the third hole.
Hudak said the course, while not as hilly as the Patriots’ and Hawks’ home course at Hanover Country Club, is challenging in its own way. “You have to have all your shots,” Hudak said. “You don’t have to go banging it off the tee. You have to be smart and keep it in the short grass, or you can get some big numbers.
The highlight of the day, however, happened to Hanover’s Jimmy Hill. Hill didn’t make the Hawks’ top four, but he got the day’s top shot – and ace on the sixth hole. He teed off with a 7iron and it cleared the 153 yards to the green, taking two hops and rolling into the hold. It took Hill a while to realize what happened.
“When my dad started jumping up-and-down, everybody started screaming, I was in shock,” Hill said. “I couldn’t believe it.” Hill had never seen a holein-one other than on television. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Former Hanover High School baseball player Trevor Denton received a Gold Glove award from the American Baseball Coaches Association and NJCAA on Sept. 1. Denton, who typically played third base at Hanover, has been playing catcher at Pitt Community College in Greenville, North Carolina. In his freshman year for the Bulldogs, Denton recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage. In 117 total chances in 23 games, he finished with 103 putouts and 14 assists, and threw out eight of the 22 base runners who attempted to steal on him.

MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover and Patrick Henry engaged in quite the slugfest to open their boys volleyball match on the Hawks’ home court Tuesday night. Hanover won the first game 36-34, but the Patriots took over afterward, playing evenly while the Hawks struggled to regain the momentum in their favor. In the end, the steadier

team won the match, as Patrick Henry edged its hosts 34-36, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19. Patrick Henry outside hitter Cole Carrano said there was no lack of fight in either team. “Both teams fought real hard in the first game. It was a great first game,” Carrano said. “We lost it – the other team played great – but we came back with a vengeance. We worked hard Dave Lawrence/The Local the rest of the three games. Raiders overwhelm outguned Confederates By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee, currently ranked No. 2 in the Times-Dispatch boys volleyball poll, was doing everything it wanted on its side of the Raiders’ home court against Lee-Davis Tuesday night. The less experienced Confederates, hampered by an injury to one of its starters, struggled to keep up. Unfortunately for Lee-Davis, they could not put enough runs together to seriously challenge Atlee as the Raiders swept the match 25-11, 25-10, 25-20. Atlee head coach Nick Robinson said the Raiders, who made it to the state semifinals last year, have been able to pick up this season where they left off last year. “We returned four starters from last year, so that’s a big part of it,” Robinson said. “We really didn’t lose a lot from last year, so that helps us. Our learning curve wasn’t quite as steep as I think some of the other schools are going to have.” He added that the newcomers to the starting lineup have had an impact immediately, particularly middle blocker Jacob French. “He’s a real standout player,” Robinson said. “He’s really brought something to our team that we worried we might not be able to replace from last year. He stepped right in and has

didn’t let up, ever, and got the lead and didn’t give it up.” Patrick Henry head coach Michael Townsend though the Patriots (5-3) let the first game slip away. “We had two five-point leads and we gave up both of them,”
done a fantastic job for us.” French finished with six kills against the Confederates. While the Raiders (6-2) have found that last year’s momentum has carried over, Lee-Davis (1-5) has struggled as its newcomers grow into their jobs. “We did a lot of things well,” said Lee-Davis head coach Nick Brown. “We just couldn’t quite put a run of points together it seems like. We seemed to side out pretty quickly. … I have three seniors starting out of eight, nine guys playing a lot. There is a lot of youthful mistakes that we make at times. But these guys are working hard. They’re getting better.” In addition to score, Atlee dominated in the highlight department. In addition to French’s six kills, Eric Rohr had five aces and nine kills and Chui Elliott had seven kills.
While Lee-Davis struggled against Atlee Tuesday night, the Confederates won’t have to worry about Atlee spoiling their bid for a postseason berth in the Conference 11 tournament. Both Atlee and Patrick Henry have moved to Conference 12, which had six teams to begin with.
If they teams had not moved, Conference 11 would have had 10 teams in it. Only the top four teams from each conference advance to their respective playoff tournaments. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
Townsend said. “I think we kind of kept them in the game – our passing went downhill.” Hanover head coach Hilary Cassil said the Hawks (4-6) have struggled with consistency. The Patriots, on the other hand, after the loss in the first game, got refocused and kept a step ahead of Hanover. The last three [games], we
passed well, we blocked, we did everything we needed to do,” Townsend said. “I always focus on passing, which in volleyball it’s the most important thing. I tell that to the kids the first time they walk on the court in JV … and we did that those last three games.” Carrano finished with four aces and 18 kills for Patrick
Henry. Austin Spencer had 10 kills and four blocks, and Adam Lane recorded 57 assists. Hanover was led by Lee Olenyik with 13 kills and five blocks, Andrew Moore with four kills and five blocks, and Turner Cole with nine kills. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
