‘A little nudge’ County to honor veterans led educator to Sean Davis be keynote pursue HCSB tospeaker for By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

MECHANICSVILLE – “I had had a little nudge in the community and that’s how I really became aware that the opportunity was coming around [to serve on the Hanover County School Board] like it does every four years,” Marla Coleman, who has represented the Henry District since July 1, said. She was appointed by Sean Davis, who represents that district on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. “I gave it some thought. If not now, when? Whenever would I have an opportunity to offer my name? I called him [Davis] up and we talked about it and I offered my name,” she recalled.

Local man guilty of crashing into, killing tow truck driver By Brandon Shulleeta Richmond Times-Dispatch HANOVER — A Mechanicsville man was found guilty last Wednesday of fatally crashing into a tow truck driver on the side of Interstate 295 in Hanover County last year. After a three-day trial, a jury found Dwayne Gray Miller Jr., 32, guilty of aggravated involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The jury recommended that Miller be sentenced to nine years in prison for the manslaughter conviction and two years for leaving the scene. The victim, Jason E. Bailey, 22, of Henrico County, was

Bailey was standing in harm’s way without a safety vest. After Miller crashed his SUV into the side of the tow truck, pinning Bailey against the two vehicles, the SUV continued forward until overturning at an embankment, according to prosecutor Stephen B. tremendous support that we receive from our parents, volunteers, community, business partners, and county leaders. Together, this helps to ensure that our school division remains exceptional,” said Dr. Robert F. “Rick” Richardson Jr., interim superintendent. “The school board is very excited to hear the great news regarding our division’s accreditation. As always, our students continue to impress us with their ability to achieve within the classroom. We are extremely proud of the dedicated teaching staff and administrations within each school, whose commitment to excel-

lence in teaching cannot be sufficiently underscored. And, we thank the community for its part through volunteering, PTA, fundraising, internships, and other ‘real world’ connections that help provide relevance between our students’ school work and their future endeavors. Hanover is a special community, and it is only through this mutual effort that an accomplishment such as this is achieved,” said Robert L. Hundley Jr., Hanover County School Board chairman. seat, Coleman said she did so “on my resume, but I did feel confident in my resume.” After being appointed to the seat, she immediately accepted the responsibilities with determination and gusto. “When I get thrown in, I go to work to master all the concepts, the relationships, the duties. I try to understand what is expected and how I fit into it.” “You have no idea how highly regarded Hanover County [school division] is across the state and country,” Coleman continued. “We offer an opportunity to take good to another level. And I would like to say that we are positioned to become a great educational school system.” “Everyone in the past has led from a position of strength, commitment and vision, and I think it’s really important that we recognize that every teacher, every partner, every

citizen and every employee of the school system has contributed to bring Hanover County to where it is.” “We should be able to pick among the very best of candidates and pick well,” she added. As the newest member of the school board, Coleman said she expects her first year to be “a smooth one. We are ready for what comes next. We do need to keep a vision and a long-range vision and I hope to be part of building that.” A retired educator and administrator, she said, “I think it’s an asset because I come in knowing a lot of the language, knowing the people. Whenever I would find myself not growing in my job or in a place where I had restricted opportunity to grow, I always had a question — ‘What else can I do that will enrich my life?’ — whether it was in the

school or out of the school. In one particular case, it had to be out of the school system.’ She started conducting workshops for the Virginia Department of Education. She said it “offered a wonderful opportunity to develop the DARE program; the Cadre program, A community-based prevention organization; statewide programs. I was a team leader.” Coleman said she was “on loan from Henrico County Public Schools” when she was working for the state. She said there are four things in life one needs to help towards “where you’re really supposed to be: the personal ability, willing to have an adventure, take a risk while being flexible, and creative.” “If I had not sought a positive way to renew myself

Supervisors move to sale site of former playground By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER — For years, an area intended for use as a tot playground has been an eyesore for residents of The Villages at Beaverdam Park. Deteriorating playground equipment and overgrown weeds created a neighborhood nuisance, and, last week, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors took action to resolve the issue. An ongoing discussion between the homeowners association and county officials produced no results, and care and upkeep of the property fell to the county. “The Homeowners Association is essentially defunct,” said Mechanicsville District supervisor Canova Peterson shortly before mak-

ing a motion for approval of a request to vacate the designation and return the property to the county for future sale as a buildable lot. “The goal that the county is moving toward is to eliminate the nuisance on this property which we could not do until they came into ownership of,” said county attorney Sterling Rives. “This has been a continuing issue for years,” Peterson said. “The homeowners were asked four times to take care of this. The county is only one that has gone in there to take care of things.” The Homeowners Association seemed unwilling or unable to form and provide upkeep on the lot, so county officials asked the supervisors to approve the vacating pro-

cedure that clears the way for sale. “We gave them every chance we could,” Peterson said. “The idea now is the property will come to a use that will be cared for.” Peterson recommended approval, citing a concern for safety and a desire to get the property cleaned up. “It’s in shambles right now,” he said. “I’m confident that this property will be a lot better cared for and better used,” Peterson added. The original plat was filed in 1977, and the board’s action removes the designation of recreation or tot lot on the document. The designation now will identify the property as a buildable lot.

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

Thank our veterans for the freedoms we enjoy At 2 p.m. next Wednesday, Hanover County will continue a tradition of honoring our military veterans. We applaud all those involved with organizing and participating in this much-deserved Veterans Day memorial ceremony for those who served our country to protect the freedoms we value and embrace. Somber and emotional, it’s an event that merits your attendance if possible. As the numbers dwindle of those who returned home from World War II, our nation still remembers their sacrifices as the Greatest Generation. Since the 1940s, our nation has been involved in battles in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East. We have military personnel continuing to fight the evil in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. And, remember, it is for us that these men and women literally lay down their lives. As has been stated frequently, it is with great pride that many of my family members have served and continue to do their part for our country. In recent years, it has become a habit to thank a man or woman in uniform. All have been quite humbled by the acknowledgement. It certainly is the least I can do is to offer a sincere “Thank you for what you do.” Again, if you can take the time to attend the county ceremony at Hanover Wayside Park, we encourage you to do so. You will truly experience a moving and memorable tribute. To all of our veterans, let us join in saluting them. Most of all, we extend our heartfelt thanks.

And it’s over Despite the years of covering elections, it seems as if no one are alike — and that seemed to be the case with yesterday’s General Election. We go to press on Monday evening, so all the results will appear in our Nov. 11 edition. But you can check out our Facebook page — www.facebook. com/mechlocal — because we were diligent last night in keeping up with the State Board of Elections website. We would be remiss if we didn’t say “Thank you” to Voter Registrar Teresa “Teri” Smithson for all her help to us this election cycle. Melody Kinser

‘Can you hear me?’ Sadly, yes By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist The lady arrived at the overpacked dentist’s waiting room and searched for a seat, finally landing in the last available space located on a crowded sofa. As people read the ample supply of magazines waiting their turn to see the doctor, and others amused themselves with video games or worked on their computers, the lady removed an oversized cell phone from her bag and began calling. The tranquility of the waiting room was only disturbed by the constant beeping sounds emitted from her phone as she dialed number after number, finally connecting with

someone on the other end. She was wishing someone a happy birthday, her voice breaking the silence of a room. “Tell me what you are doing today,” she continued, as her conversation suddenly became everyone else’s in the room. I’m no expert on cell phone etiquette, but it seems the popular device has allowed folks to ignore the laws of common courtesy and share their business with anyone within listening distance. Should it bother me? Probably not. But, honestly, using a phone as entertainment and calling endless numbers just for the sake of killing time seems symptomatic of a culture that is losing its politeness.

With each call, her voice got louder, and, finally, the entire room was involved with her conversations. Each call required an additional amount of volume from her end, and conversations ran the gambit of subject matter from weekend plans to her friend’s birthday party. There are no rules regarding cell phone use, but a good rule of thumb to follow is that if you feel you are doing something inconsiderate or obnoxious, then you probably are. Honestly, no one wants or needs to hear about your trip to the shoe store or the way someone’s hair looked at work today. It’s way too much information. So is it rude to carry on consee HEAR, pg. 20

One resident who lives adjacent to the property said she has been trying to get the property for years. “I’ve been trying for over 20 years to get this piece of property, said Catlin Road resident Karen Geoff. “I’ve tried everything I can think of over the years to get this property. Now, you are going to charge an arm and a leg because you think you can build on it. I don’t think that’s fair. Chairman Wayne Hazzard, South Anna District, said it is the county’s financial responsibility to sell the property at its highest price for the citizens of Hanover. “It belongs to all the citizens of Hanover County, he said. The lot was originally intended for use as a common area for the subdivision, but Rives said numerous efforts

to have the Homeowners Association maintain the property were futile. “County staff has tried for years to get the Homeowners Association to undertake the maintenance on this property and use it for its intended purpose and has continually been unsuccessful in those efforts, he said. “This was the only recourse to eliminate what I think everybody in the subdivision considers to be an ongoing nuisance. In other matters, deputy county administrator Jim Taylor presented an annual report on the county’s Human Services. Demands for service were up in most categories. The report includes the Department of Social Services, the Community Services Board, the Department of Community Resources, Juvenile Court Services

and the Hanover Health Department. Dr. Tom Franck, Chickahominy Health District director, said premature deaths in Hanover County rose slightly over the past five years while most areas in the state recorded lower numbers. “Those are people who died before their time, Franck said, referring to suicide rates and early deaths. Taylor said programs like Healthy Hanover will address those issues in an effort to prevent an increase in premature deaths. More than 21,000 volunteers assisted in the delivery of Human Services. “One in five residents is volunteering with the county in some capacity, Taylor said. The Department of Social Services serves about 6,400 people monthly, down slightly from last year’s numbers.

M E C HA N IC S V I L L E — Brewville Growlers and Gourmet To Go is a brand new full service growler filling station and gourmet shop that opened early last month in Rutland Commons. The new business is located at 9357 Atlee Rd, Suite 1105, right off U.S. 301. For those who ask: What is a growler or even a growler filling station? The answer is a growler is a glass vessel that was popular back at the turn of the century before bottles and cans were the means of enjoying your favorite ale or lager. People would take their jugs (eventually coined growlers) with them to the pub to have their beverage of choice filled so that they could then take it home and drink it there. As the craft beer movement has exploded in the last decade, the growler has come back into popularity as a means of again getting great craft beer from breweries and growler filling stations that you can’t typically find in six packs or cases at your regular

grocery store. Growler filling stations and or stores became a reality again. A growler filling station is a place, like Brewville, where you have a selection of great craft beer that’s typically hard to find elsewhere all in one place and available to fill your growlers. The business was started by Justin McDonald and Michael Cohan, the owner of Marty’s Grill. After seeing the success of the craft beer movement at the restaurant and the need in the area, McDonald said they decided there was a need and want in the local community to get better access to local, regional and national craft beer. Brewville Gourmet and Beer to go is a package store. “The way it works,” he said, “is you come in, try a few samples of beer and then once you’ve made your selection or two you fill up one of our 32- or 64- ounce growlers and take it home to enjoy with friends and family.” “We also fill growlers from all of the local breweries and

other growler filling stations,” he added. “The important thing for us was creating something that worked in our community, so we tried to create an environment that appreciates and fits Hanover County. We used a local artist to create the mural and artwork that’s in Brewville to create an environment that showcases the beauty of both the beer and the area we live in.” McDonald has a background in food and culinary arts. He said it was important to him to make sure that, along with creating an amazing selection of craft beers, “we featured a good selection of locally sourced grocery items and high-end meats and cheeses that would pair well with any number of the beers.” He also said that he “knows how important it is to create a welcoming environment with a great staff that is both inviting and knowledgeable.” Brewville features 56 rotating taps of beer made up of lots of Richmond staples such as Hardywood, Strangeways, Ardent, Center of the Universe, Legend and more, along with a

selection of beer and ciders from all over the state. Not limited to just draft, Brewville also features a collection of high-end hard-toget package beer that rotates seasonally with their tap selection. McDonald said the proper glassware for each style of beer is available for purchase at Brewville, as well as soft merchandise such as t-shirts and hats. Brewville is open seven days a week – from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday , 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. MARY DALLAS Mary Weeks Dallas, 78, of Western Henrico, departed this life unexpectedly, but surrounded by family on Thursday, October 29, 2015. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband and “Honey” of 57 years, David L. “Dave” Dallas Sr.; their four children, David Jr. (Susan), Donna Dallas, Dana Dallas (Lloyd Gregory) and Deborah Mohr (Doug); 10 grandchildren, D. Lee III, Rebecca, Haley, Parker, Kenley, Crew, Callad, Jake, Zeke and Faith; and innumerable friends. Mary was raised in Hanover County and graduated from Henry Clay High School. ing bridge with friends, cheering for her family in sports and life, watching birds from her sunroom and rooting for favorite teams. Mary also enjoyed travel with Dave as an empty nester and hosting gatherings for any reason. Her macaronia and cheese, lemon Jello cake and other specialties enticed everyone, but remain culinary mysteries to all but her beloved mother-inlaw, Maude C. Dallas. “Sweet Merry” Mary will be remembered as a petite and elegant Southern lady of immense heart, energy, compassion and determination, who charmed all who came to know her. A memorial service honoring Mary’s life will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Derbyshire Baptist Church at 8800 Derbyshire Road, with a reception following. train passengers, crews, visitors and those who live there. There will be a countdown and the giant Christmas FOLEY tree and other lights will be turned on at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5.

Lorie Foley and Sue Watson, with music director Fred Horn, are gathering a large Community Volunteer Chorus to lead the music during the 30-minute sing-along that will follow the lighting of the tree. “We encourage anyone who can sing, young and old — kindergarten age and up, to come to the only rehearsal for this program, at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in the sanctuary of the Ashland Christian Church on South James Street across from Henry Clay School,” Watson said.

“There will be a song that requires harmony, singing in parts, and other songs that will be sung all together.” “Since there will be only one rehearsal, attendance at this rehearsal is essential to be a part of this choir,” she added. “We encourage good singers of all ages (kindergarten and up) to come and help lead the entire greater Ashland community in our giant sing-along.” For more information, contact Lorie Foley at 804-339-6175 or Sue Watson at 804-798-5686.

statements, according to several witnesses who testified. Cooley had argued that Bailey’s blood might have ended up on Miller’s SUV when Miller tried to dodge Bailey’s body that was, in his theory, already at rest in the interstate and blood splashed onto the SUV. However, Royalty showed a series of pictures of the SUV with horizontal blood streaks on the passenger side door near where the side view mirror was knocked off. No blood was found on the SUV tires or at the bottom of the vehicle, where blood would have more likely splashed if Miller had merely been driving through the crash scene, Royalty argued. Family members described the victim as a caring, unselfish man who would go out of his way to help others. “He always did for others,”

his mother, Wendy Bailey, said in an interview after the verdicts were reached. She said her son would stop to help people on the side of the road when he wasn’t working just to be kind. Bailey had a son, Jamison, 2, who relatives say was the center of his father’s world. Friends described Miller as a polite family man and former electrician with a wife and two young daughters. Deavon Patterson, one of Bailey’s three siblings, said she had long believed that seeing Miller be brought to justice would provide some relief but felt little relief after the guilty verdicts were read. “I actually feel worse knowing that his children will grow up without their father,” Patterson said. “I pray that he someday he forgives himself.” Miller will remain in custody before appearing before a judge Jan. 25 for sentencing.

in the 1870s. Photographs and stories tell about when Randolph-Macon College came to Ashland in 1868, spurring residential and commercial development in what is now Ashland’s National Historical District. After the turn of the 19th century, Ashland felt the booms, the busts, the evolution, and development that the rest of the nation experienced. There was an Equal Suffrage League in 1916, a Liberty Day Parade in 1917, and Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918.

Like the rest of the country, Ashland fell in love with the automobile, and car dealerships sold Fords and Chevrolets. Engaging exhibits of photos and maps, dresses and clothing patterns, tell the story. All will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Ashland Train Day, Saturday, Nov. 7.

Dr. Wehman’s major focus now is on expanding the partnerships with businesses of all sizes so that more persons with disabilities will gain entrance into the workplace and retain employment. versations in public places? Apparently not if one considers how many folks are doing it. But, I’m not sure that makes it acceptable or changes basic common courtesy when it comes to cell phones. But, to the person sitting there having to listen to your conversation, it’s beyond rude. Cell phones are not unique, and most Americans have one so the need to display yours as a badge of courage long ago became passé. I asked a younger friend if there was such a thing as cell

phone etiquette, and the reply was not encouraging. “I don’t think so.” I questioned my own perceptions of what is rude and what isn’t, and quickly realized that it’s a moving target. Things that Emily Post outlawed many years ago are now acceptable behavior. It used to be unacceptable to wear a hat inside, but it’s common behavior now. Want to call someone after 9 p.m.? Not a problem. Maybe I’m overreacting to a problem that doesn’t exist and it’s just my grumpy nature that is causing the problem. So I turned to the afore-

mentioned Emily Post Institute for guidance on what exactly is accepted behavior regarding cell phones. The rules listed on their website are strict, and I fear all of us are at least one-time violators — most of us habitual offenders in disobeying the Post guidelines. The Emily Post Institute lists the following as rules for good cell phone etiquette. Read ‘em and weep: Be in control of your phone, don’t let it control you! Speak softly. Be courteous to those you are with; turn off your phone if it will be interrupting

a conversation or activity. Watch your language, especially when others can overhear you. Avoid talking about personal or confidential topics in a public place. If it must be on and it could bother others, use the silent ring mode and move away to talk. Don’t make calls in a library, theater, church or from your table in a restaurant. Don’t text during class or a meeting at your job. Private info can be forwarded, so don’t text it. Never drive and use your phone at the same time.

where I was, then these other doors would not have opened, Coleman said. “I opened the door to my own renewal and other doors opened and I tend to open through doors. I don’t look back. I just think selfrenewal is a really important part of life. Look inside yourself and see it’s time to do that. Since taking office, she has attended training provided for teachers. She is especially interested in what she referred to as “what kinds of shifts have occurred in the training through the years. Her priority list includes emergency discipline strategies and re-victimization. “We have to have a bigger view of discipline strategies. Without question, she is a cheerleader for Hanover County Public Schools. “This school system has a vision and

pathways available at the high school level, including: The Specialty Center with a health sciences focus (new for 2016). The Advance College Academy (new for 2016). The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology. The International Baccalaureate

definitely is preparing. Coleman has met one-onone with fellow school board members to discuss their goals. “The board works in a broader fashion. My personal goals were: No. 1, to get caught up to where the other board members were. There was a lot to learn and very quickly. The community has been absolutely positive and I’m trying to be accessible and I’m in the schools. Sean and I actually did the rounds the first day of school (seven schools). I enjoy exchanging ideas with people. A native of North Carolina, Coleman said, “I went a mile down the street to my hometown college, Louisburg College, where they taught me how to study and really opened my life towards a love of learning that has never gone away. She described it as “a small school, residential (twoyear), the oldest in the United

program. This year was the first that the school division presented the expo. The first of the two was held Oct. 20 at Hanover High School. It attracted a large crowd. A free dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome, but the expo is con-

States. These days, she serves on the Board of Trustees at her alma mater. She continued her education at UNC at Chapel Hill, where she received her Bachelor’s degree English and then went on to East Carolina University for her Master’s as a guidance counselor. Coleman has taught English, art and journalism in public schools. She started at Colonial Heights and went to Washington County, North Carolina. Her husband Ned’s family was in Dinwiddie so they returned to the Richmond area. She grinned, saying what really brought her back here was Santa Claus. “I had the good fortune to meet the real Santa Claus and got a phone call from him, so what’s better than to come back?! She said her husband, who

Atlee ensures playoff spot with Varina win By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – To get a firm grip on a playoff berth in Region 5A North, Atlee desperately needed a win when it hosted Varina Friday night. Fortunately for the Raiders, they got it. Quarterback Rasharrd Harris persisted through a tough night full of dropped passes, getting enough completions – 10 – to keep Atlee’s offense moving and Varina’s defense off-balance, and eventually picked up 182 yards and a touchdown in the air to lead the Raiders to a 24-15 victory over the Blue Devils. Historically, Atlee has struggled to beat Varina, a perennial powerhouse that, like Atlee, is having something of a down year. “We just came out and practiced hard all this week,” Harris said. “That’s what happens when you practice hard. You come out with a victory.” The bonus points from the win over Varina, a Group 6 team, should give Atlee extra cushion to protect its playoff berth as the Raiders go into their final regular season game against Armstrong this coming Friday night. Barring a series of miracles, however, the Raiders will have to go on the road in the first round of the 5A North playoffs.

Atlee quarterback Rasharrd Harris (7) scores on a keeper in the Raiders’ 24-15 victory over visiting Varina Friday.

Defensively, Atlee (5-4) got stops when it needed. Though Varina’s C.J. Jones found plenty of room to move on the field – he led all rushers with 20 carries for 339 yards – but the Raiders held him to just one touchdown, a 74-yard run early in the second quarter. “I’m excited for the guys,”

said Atlee head coach Roscoe Johnson. “Defensively, we were able to keep [the Blue Devils] down a little bit. … They practiced well all week and it showed today in the game.” The Varina (4-5) offense nearly doubled up Atlee’s yardage gains, finishing with 547 yards total offense to just 280

for the Raiders. But, after Jones’ touchdown, the Blue Devils could not get across the goal line until the final two minutes of the game when quarterback Jalon Jones connected with receiver Samon Pinchback for a 27-yard score. Varina head coach Stu Brown said his offense couldn’t

take advantage of what his defense was offering in the second half. “We rushed for 500 yards. We did what we wanted to,” said Varina head coach Stu Brown. “The biggest possessions of the second half, we had to get stops see ATLEE, pg. 29

VIRGINIA BEACH – The conditions were less than ideal for golf: cool, windy and rainy. But Richmond-area golfers made their mark at the VHSL Girls Open tournament at Red Wing Lake anyway Monday and Tuesday, with three finishing at the top of the 61-girl field. Mills Godwin’s Diana Domenech and Atlee’s Erica Whitehouse finished in a tie for second place with a two-day total of 148, and Glen Allen’s Celadon Ramsey finished in a three-way tie for third with Centreville’s Jenny Cho and Galax’s Sirena see OPEN, pg. 28

Henrico stand snuffs L-D’s bid for victory By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch HENRICO – Dormant for most of the game, the LeeDavis offense finally roared to live in the fourth quarter. Chase Mummau had thrown a long touchdown pass and engineered a long drive into Henrico territory. With less than a minute to go, No. 7 Lee-Davis stood just 6 yards from the end zone, trailing by a touchdown. A game that had felt like a blowout was once again with its reach. Lee-Davis running back Nathan Evans took the handoff and charged forward. Suddenly, the ball was on the ground. Alert to the situation, Henrico defender D’Andre Walker dived on it and recovered the fumble. Lee-Davis’ comeback was interrupted, and the victory Friday night belonged to No. 9 Henrico, 21-14. “I just saw De’Andre come out of nowhere,” Henrico linebacker Kadofi Wright said. When Walker saw a run coming, he left his coverage assignment and blitzed forward. “I saw the ball on the ground,” Walker said. “I was like, thank you, God.’” Once again, Henrico (72) had a victory thanks to its defense. It forced three turnovers and kept Lee-Davis (7-2) from converting a first down for 27 minutes from midway

through the first quarter until late in the third. “I’m all right with us leaning on our defense,” Henrico coach Gerald Glasco said. “We’ve got some horses out there.” The defense is a veteran group that includes senior

college prospects like Wright, Kysheen Myrick and Kevonte Demery. But it was the junior, Walker, who recovered the fumble and snagged an interception Friday night. Everyone knows their job, Wright said. Typically, Walker’s

job is simply to guard receivers and stop touchdowns. Friday it became much more. “Do your job,” Walker said, “and everything will be all right.” Lee-Davis jumped out the gate and scored four plays into

the game. Nathan Evans scored on a 10-yard run. But not again until the fourth quarter did LeeDavis’ offense have much pop. Evans finished with 69 yards on 20 carries. Mummau completed 11 of 24 passes for 162 yards, a touchdown and an inter-

Domenech shot a threeover 75 Monday, then improved upon that performance with a 73 Tuesday. The sophomore, who had bested her score in the Girls Open last year by nearly 30 strokes, was justifiably pleased with her result this year. “I feel good about my scores,”

Domenech said. “[Tuesday] was a fun day. I think I did my best and put forth my best effort.” Whitehouse, a junior, was surprised to finish so high. Her first-day score Monday was a four-over 76, which left her in 11th place as quite a few girls handled the conditions – temperatures around 60 and winds

around 15 miles per hour with gusts around 25 – fairly well. She roared back into the medalist mix with an even-par card Tuesday. Whitehouse said her play was pretty solid for the most part Monday, with a few notable exceptions. “I was pretty happy with

[the 76], other than two holes yesterday,” Whitehouse said. “If I could had those back, it would have been better, but it’s still good.” She said the weather posed something of a challenge. “The weather was definitely different than what I’m used to because it was cold and windy

Lee-Davis had one last chance to score when it got the ball on its own 21-yard line with 5:32 left in the game. The Confederates drove 73 yards before fumbling in the final minute. Ultimately, their two and half quarters of lethargy was too much to overcome. “I was nervous for a second,” Glasco said of the last drive. The Henrico offense had an uneven performance. At times, the Warriors’ wing-T attack moved fluidly down the field. The Warriors distributed the ball among three backs, Xavier Goodall, Kobe Chavis and Rayquan Andrews. Goodall scored two touchdowns, but Andrews was the most effective, rushing 17 times for 50 yards. Andrews had his best effort after missing a number of weeks with an ankle sprain. But then the Warriors were shut out after halftime. “Our offense came out a little stagnant, got going, then was stagnant again later,” Glasco said. Henrico’s effort was marred by penalties. The Warriors committed 22 penalties and were docked 176 yards. “We’ve got to get better,” Glasco said. Eric Kolenich can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

Hanover done; Lee-Davis advances in field hockey By Billy Fellin For the Mechanicsville Local MIDLOTHIAN – Consistent and quick pressure was the name of the game for the Powhatan Indians during the Conference 20 field hockey semifinals on Oct. 26. The Hanover Hawks were unable to keep up. Fueled by four first-half goals by junior forward Hannah Adams, the Indians took down the Hawks 5-1 at River City Sportsplex, ending Hanover’s season. “Overall, I think we had a lot of hustle out there, but we weren’t near as aggressive as we could be,” Hanover field hockey coach Sarah Rowe said. “At least next year I know that we have some things to work on.” Defending set plays were one weakness that Powhatan was able to exploit Hanover on. Adams scored two of her four first half tallies as a direct result of corners. The Indians crashed in on the Hanover goal several times and were able to find the back of the net to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. “They connected their passes really well,” Rowe said. “They were dodging and cutting in front of the ball really well. That’s something we’ve been working on all season. That’s something we’ll just have to get better at.” When Hanover was able to flip the field and put some

and score. We got four straight stops, and then we couldn’t move the ball. That was the biggest part. In the first half [the Raiders] had two plays and was winning the ball game after we had rushed for 300-plus yards.

pressure on the Indians defense, goalie Gatlin Snyder was able to come up with some key saves that stopped the momentum from going Hanover’s direction. The Hawks lone goal came with 5:30 remaining in the first half, when senior forward Margaret Delaney beat Snyder off of a corner opportunity. But, the Hawks were stymied by Adams’ fourth goal of the half occurring just before halftime and Brie Burgio scoring 10 minutes into the second half, putting the game out of reach for Hanover. While the season ended

early for the Hawks, the roster remains strong for next year. Delaney is one of five seniors to be departing, along with Jennifer Schumacher, Mia Andruss, Delaney Daniely and Kristen Yeager. The Hawks roster remains loaded with juniors that have now had the even more playoff experience, such as keeper Rachel Weis, midfielder Mia Andruss and forwards Brianna Searles and Breanna Kim. All of that collective expereince will pay dividends next season. “I’m excited about next year. I’m sad to lose some of the seniors. We only have five,”

Rowe said. “We have a pretty young team. I’m not losing too many people. We’ll still be really strong next year.”

“The bottom line is, I feel like we just didn’t execute. [Atlee] got a lot of yards, too, but when you rush for 500 yards, you’re supposed to win a football game.” Johnson said the defense was well prepared for Varina. “Coach [Omar] Kizzie and the rest of the defensive staff did a great job … of preparing

the kids,” Johnson said. “We felt comfortable coming into the game with some of the things that [the Blue Devils] did. [The defense] showed it out here. They had a great understanding of what they were doing and they played hard.” Atlee’s first score came late in the first quarter on a 37yard field goal by Ethan Ratke.

Mid-way through the second quarter, Queshon Baker caught Harris’ only touchdown pass of the day, a 58-yarder, to give the Raiders a 10-7 lead that they would never relinquish. Atlee’s final two scores came on a 1-yard run by Clifton Woody just before halftime, and a 17-yard run by Harris early in the fourth quarter.

Conference 11 RICHMOND – Deep Run blanked Lee-Davis 5-0 to win the Conference 11 field hockey title for the second consecutive year Friday night at Douglas Freeman High School. “It’s just a great way for us to end the regular season. The girls really wanted it,” said Deep Run coach Rachel Haislip. “They really wanted to repeat from last year. I think it was a great way for them to end the

season.” Almost halfway through the first half, junior Summer Powers put the Wildcats on the board with assists from senior Cora Every and senior Olivia Mazey. Powers scored again shortly after on a short drive in the penalty box after another Every assist. Then, on Deep Run’s 10th and final penalty corner seconds before halftime, freshman Allie Kelleher received the ball from Every in the penalty box and found the back of the net. Early in the second half, sophomore Allie Kelley grabbed the ball on the right post and slid it into the goal to score for the Wildcats. Mazey scored their final goal with a high driving shot on an assist from junior

Lauren Heffron. “We played very well as a team,” Mazey said. “The first half we were a little slow and we had to get used to the field, too. But then in the second half, we really worked together.” Every said: “It’s awesome to end our senior year. We’ve come together this season and it feels like it was worth it.” Deep Run will play L.C. Bird and Lee-Davis will face Prince George in the first round of 5A regionals on Monday night. “I think we should do well in regionals,” Haislip said. “We haven’t played L.C. Bird, but we played Prince George in the regular season and we beat them and did well against them so we’re hoping to go far in regionals.” — Katrina Spinner-Wilson

Davis, Moses finish in front of league pack By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – They went out together. They came in together. And when they crossed the finish line of the Conference 16 cross country championships at Patrick Henry High School, they proved themselves the top two boys runners in the conference Wednesday. Patrick Henry’s Grant Davis took off from the start with Atlee’s Connor Moses on his heels to start their race on a drizzle-dampened field. While Moses was not quite on Davis’ heels at the finish, both were well ahead of the rest of the pack. Davis finished in 17:04.16, followed by Moses in 17:16.57. Moses’ teammate Kameron Helminger was third with a 17:28.47 finish. Albemarle’s Jonathan Muhler (17:31.48) and Atlee’s Chad Foltz (17:35.59) rounded out the top five. Atlee’s Jake Dehetre finished seventh in 17:44.12. The Raiders won the boys title with 30 points. Albemarle (39) came in second, followed by Patrick Henry (83), Patrick Henry-Roanoke (87), Orange (150) and Halifax (165). Davis came in nearly in a sprint at the end. Despite his strong start and finish, he said he does get tired in the course of a 5,000-meter race. “You do get tired,” Davis said. “It’s just a huge amount of insanity that comes with keeping that pace. It’s no easy task.” Moses did a good job keeping up, though he wanted to do better than just keep up. “The whole time I was thinking I was going to try to beat him,” Moses said. “It didn’t happen today, but I knew he was going to go out hard, so I had to go with him. … Then he started slowing down a little

Donovan’s and Owen’s performance led the Raiders to a second place finish with 58 points to Albemarle’s 23. Patrick Henry-Roanoke was third with 74 points, followed by Patrick Henry (109), Orange (125) and Halifax (173).

Patrick Henry’s Grant Davis (left) and Atlee’s Connor Moses (247) finished where they started: ahead of the pack in the Conference 16 boys cross country championship at Patrick Henry Wednesday. Davis won in 17:04.16, with Moses second in 17:16.57.

“It helps to have competition as great as Connor, and just a whole lot more fun,” Davis said. Moses finds Davis’ presence helps him do better on the course. “I always see Grant up ahead. Every time, I’m like, ‘I’m going to get him. I’m going to get him,’ ” Moses said. “It hasn’t happened yet, but maybe at regionals it’ll happen.” Albemarle handily won the girls race with six runners in the top 10: Ryan Helmers first Dave Lawrence/The Local with a 19:41.98 finish, Kenzie Lee-Davis’ Mackenzie Wright gets a spike past Glen Lloyd third (20:11.39, Gabbi Allen’s Myah Massenburg in the Confederates’ 3-0 victory Bock fourth (20:34.64), Jenn Thursday. (21:10.68) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Patrick Henry’s Ashli Cole was the only other area runner to crack the top 10, with a 10th place-finish in 21:20.64. It was a good finish for Donovan who has had some health issues sap her performance since the end of last year’s cross country season, but she would rather be in the top form she displayed last fall. “I know I can do better,” Donovan said. “I still don’t feel good about my races.” She doesn’t let those feelings that she should be doing better weigh her down, however. “I just run for my team,” Donovan said. “I know that they’re counting on me. … If I ever want to give up, I just look at them. I see them and I just want to do better.”

Conference 11 MECHANICSVILLE – LeeDavis had a disappointing day in the Conference 11 championships at Pole Green Park Thursday, as neither the boys team nor the girls team qualified to advance to the Region 5A South championships. Still, all seven of the Confederate boys and six LeeDavis girls will make the trip to Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake today. Glen Allen, with five boys among the top 10 in their race, edged Douglas Freeman 37-44 for the boys championship. Deep Run was third (83 points) and Mills Godwin fourth (90). Those four teams will advance to the Region 5A South meet. Douglas Freeman’s Waleed Suliman handily won the boys race in 15:41.27. Glen Allen’s Bashir Mosavel-Lo was second in 16:19.58 and Lee-Davis’ Jack Ikenberry third in 16:22.21. In the Conference 11 girls race, Deep Run easily beat Glen Allen 32-51. Douglas Freeman was third with 99 points, edging J.R. Tucker by just one point. Henrico’s Ashley Brown won the girls race in 18:59.68, just ahead of a pair of Glen Allen runners Rebecca Fagan (second in 19:04.93) and Caroline Robelen (third in 19:26.42). Maggie Morgan was the Confederates’ top finisher in the girls race. She came in 13th in 21:00.29. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Yellow Jackets grind out win against Shenandoah By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – RandolphMacon’s football team has had a challenging season, but one might not have been able to tell from the way it played Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets put together the most well rounded performance of its season to defeat Shenandoah 31-13 at Day Field. It was just the second win of the season for RandolphMacon – its first against an Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent. While the Yellow Jackets (26, 1-4) were not perfect, they were much more solid on both sides of the line of scrimmage. “I thought we ran the ball pretty well,” said Patrick Henry head coach Pedro Arruza. I thought [quarterback Joe McBride] made some throws when he had to make some throws. I thought we played a lot better overall.” The Yellow Jackets gained 260 yards on 57 carries, picking up two touchdowns on 1-yard runs by Dom Kaopua and Yonis Blanco. McBride, fighting his way into the starting quarterback slot following an injury to Bubby Morgan earlier this season, completed 13 of 16 passes

Parker was in a tie for 11th with a 153, Durham was in a tie for 21st with a 159, and Cook in a tie for 24th with a 160. Patrick Henry’s Andrea Dill finished with a 170 – 85-85 – and Cosby’s Abby Gschwind with a 172. Dill’s teammate, Shea Burch finished with a 188, but her score was a win for her. Her

for 174 yards and two touchdowns – one a 3-yard strike to Steven Quinn and the other on a 25-yard pass to Christian Redman. Randolph-Macon’s defense held the Hornets (4-4, 1-4) to just 244 yards total offense. While the Yellow Jackets gave up the occasional big play, they stopped Shenandoah’s offense when they needed to. Of the nine Hornet drives not ended by a clock, the Yellow Jackets forced five punts, forced one turnover on downs and got an interception. “It was the type of game that Randolph-Macon likes to play,” said Shenandoah head coach Scott Yoder. “They’re going to run the football, play good defense. “You’ve got to tip your hat to them. We knew what was coming and we still didn’t have an answer that could get us off the field consistently. They made the plays when they needed to and their defense slowed us down and they won the game. They deserved to.” Running back John Byrd led the Yellow Jackets on the ground, gaining 125 yards on 24 carries. Eric Hoy had 12 carries for 81 yards. But the star of the RandolphMacon offense had to be McBride, who has given the

Yellow Jackets a bit of stability late in the season. “I think we’ve had four quarterbacks play [this season]. I tell you, for the guy who coaches those guys it’s been a little bit unsettling,” Arruza said. “With an experienced quarterback, you kind of add stuff every week

and, by the time you get to this point in the season, you’re clicking. … You’re really on the same page with your quarterback. We haven’t had that opportunity.” But with two weeks of McBride in the backfield, that seems to be improving. “I felt a lot more comfortable

first day card was a 102, but she turned in an 86 Tuesday – a 16stroke improvement. “I think just my attitude changed. I had a big shift last night,” Burch said. “The early tee time was quite difficult, but after that I kind of – I got in a groove. There was no pressure. I knew I wasn’t going to come in in the front, so I just played and had fun today.” Dill and Burch both ended their high school golf careers Tuesday.

“It’s gone by so quick, but I loved every minute of it,” Dill said. “It’s a little bitter sweet. You know you want to come out her and do good the last round, but it is what it is. I’m happy with how I played the past four years.” As for Domenech and Whitehouse, they both have a good chance of returning to the Girls Open next year. Whitehouse is also a repeat contender – this was her third appearance in the tournament.

Whitehouse said the prior experience helps. “It definitely gets easier the more times you do it” Whitehouse said. But it is also fun. “It’s states. I made it. It’s all good!” Domenech said. “I’m just happy I’m here and got to play. I have a bunch of friends here. They’re all leaving me, so it’s kind of sad. But it’s fun.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

with Joe. I’m sure that he felt a lot more comfortable with me today than we did last week,” Arruza said. “I like Joe. I think he’s a good decision-maker. I think he’s got good leadership qualities. He’s a tough kid and he’ll do what he asks you to do.” McBride’s counterpart on

the Hornets’ squad, Hayden Bauserman, led Shenandoah offensively, completing 17 of 29 passes for 108 yards, but he was also sacked three times for minus 22 yards. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
