Walking Track points the way Photo submitted by Dr. Jeff Scott
A community with a healthy mind, body and spirit is the goal of the Northside Baptist Church in Mechanicsville. In recent years, church leaders and the congregation have installed a children’s playground, a nearly half-mile walking track and a senior adult exercise area for community enjoyment. They recently installed a series of uplifting signs along the track to encourage and inspire area walkers. Every 250 feet along the track, walkers will enjoy a positive message from the Bible selected by the congregation. “Within the first two days of their installation, neighbors who enjoyed the signs were already calling with words of thanks,” said Dr. Jeff Scott, Northside Baptist’s senior pastor. “We hope that many in our community will enjoy the walking track and the signs for years to come.”

Nicole Riley, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, recently announced that Sen. Ryan T. McDougle earned a score of 100 percent on the 20142015 NFIB/Virginia Voting Record. NFIB/Virginia is the commonwealth’s leading smallbusiness association, with 6,000 small-business members
statewide. “Sen. McDougle has stood up for Virginia’s job creators time and again on important issues such as providing tax relief, opposing the expansion of ObamaCare in Virginia and reforming Virginia’s regulatory structure,” Riley said. Small businesses account for 98 percent of the commonwealth’s employers and employ nearly half of Virginia’s non-government workforce, according to federal govern-

were able to meet and make connections with students that may one day be employees. “Tonight, students are having the opportunity to participate in a fairly rigorous exercise but more importantly this is a very relevant exercise,” Dr. Michael Gill, incoming superintendent for Hanover County Public Schools, said. “Any opportunity that we can give to prepare students beyond the brick and mortar of the classroom is one that we see as relevant and nothing can be more relevant than doing something that is going to serve them well no matter what career they decide to take place in.” Following brief speeches by
some of the event’s sponsors and supporters, teachers at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology separated into groups according to their field, which included automotive technology and small engine technology, carpentry and electricity, cosmetology, culinary arts and HVAC/R. Students went to the classroom that represented the field they are interested in to learn more about the education and training offered. Teachers explained and further elaborated on some of the valuable work skills that students who participate in the programs at The Hanover Center for Trades and

After Paris, now we’re really mad!
From the editor
2015 Progress: taking stock of county’s pluses Development. Growth. Progress. With Hanover County bursting at the proverbial seams, today we focus on what makes the place we call home so very special. And, without question, the list is topped by its people. Inside today’s edition is a special supplement, 2015 Progress, dedicated to the people in our community who give of their time on a volunteer basis or lead in the business community. Their stories, as well as those of successful industries and organizations are at the heart of this keepsake edition. For the first time in The Mechanicsville Local’s history, we published a Progress edition last year. This year, we get to boast a bit with the addition of The Hanover Local, which means we cover Hanover County in its entirely with a combined circulation of about 44,000. Through the special supplement, we are able to recognize and acknowledge all things Hanover County and the continued successes we enjoy. County leaders join in providing updates in their respective fields, including the county administrator, chairman of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools and the mayor of the Town of Ashland. We thank them for sharing their words with our readers. We also tell the stories of community and business leaders such as Woody Hogg, a name pretty much synonymous with real estate and Mechanicsville’s growth. The county’s economic development director has plenty to talk about when he reviews 2015 and looks to 2016. And then there are those like the good folks who volunteer their time and energy to MCEF. We are blessed to have so many churches involved in helping the needy here. So, as you sit down for your Thanksgiving meal tomorrow, remember your blessings and why we are fortunate to live in Hanover County. We are about development, growth and progress. And we are confident that the future is bright and filled with promise. Enjoy the reading experience. We’re pleased to bring you our 2015 Progress. Happy Thanksgiving! Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Those were the words on a homemade sign taped to the window of a pickup truck in Mechanicsville the day after September 11, 2001. In a few short words, the message captured the mood of a nation and described a unified reaction to the horrible reality of an enemy who followed no rules and knew no bounds and displayed a total disregard for human compassion or survival.
We stood united as a nation and pledged to defeat an enemy largely unknown to us at the time. We engaged in a traditional war in an attempt to defeat an unconventional enemy. In the end, the hornet’s nest was stirred sufficiently to fuel a renewed commitment to terrorism seldom seen in a generation. Somewhere along the line, we took our eye off the ball and other matters that seemed important took prominence over our war on terrorism. I wonder how mad our country is
after recent acts of terrorism rocked the planet and once again reminded us of an adversary who will honor no moral limits in its attempt to kill whoever they consider infidels. More than 200 innocents met an untimely and gruesome end when ISIS explosives most likely downed a Russian jet over Egypt. Others died in twin bombings in Beirut and more than a hundred souls perished in Paris when shooters targeted innosee MAD, pg. 8

Parent emotional and proud by SJMS’ tribute to veterans On Nov. 9, I attended a patriotic event at Stonewall Jackson Middle School that I will never forget — ever. It was not like ones I’ve been to at national monuments, military funerals, change of command ceremonies or welcome home parades. They were all nice, but this was different. I sat on a small hard plastic seat designed for some teenage kid to hurriedly eat their lunch in a middle school cafeteria, not a place I thought I would ever be again, let alone a place I thought would be part of an experience, an event, that I would never forget. I sat there next to strangers, veterans, from all walks of life but my mind was mesmerized by the simple sight of my hero father sitting between myself and my oldest son, a fine young man who is named after him. I could thank SJMS for just that moment, but that would fall very short of explaining what this time did for me. As I sat in the cafeteria and then lined up in the halls, walked into the gymnasium, and then sat among America’s heroes, I realized once again what America is to me. I was born 45 years ago on Veterans Day. I am named after my uncle who was a hero Marine that perished during fierce combat in Vietnam and my father a Vietnam veteran Naval gunboat captain and have always been honored and proud of my namesake and this nation. I have traveled to the far corners of this planet for 20 years and have been on every continent more times that I remember, but this land is the only one for me. I sat among men and women that are the 1%; the ones that like your students said made and continue to make
this nation the greatest on the planet. I always find it a challenge not to get emotional with thanks and gratitude when I am in the presence of such greatness, a greatness defined by a simple trait, selfless service to our nation, the most noble of accomplishments in my heart. My emotions run deep. Well, I can promise you that all those feelings were present on Nov. 9 and as I write you this short letter. I know that Stonewall staff and 8th graders are busy so I will make this part brief. Every lonely night, all the salt water in my mouth, every heartbreaking moment, all the miserable days of war and danger — it was all worth it thanks to you, and the kids, the coffee, the band, the flowers and, most of all, the thanks. I am the father of four past, present and future Stonewall Jackson Middle School students and this was the best, most rewarding and touching school event I have ever attended, bar none. see LETTERS, pg. 8

I thank you, the hero 1%, and the students. I pray that someday some of those very 8th graders also will be honored for serving our nation. How connected are we today? As a 21-year-old living in our culture of “connection” I am personally face the battle of technology everyday. of being present with those around them or simply enjoying the few minutes between classes. The article stated that teenagers spend an average of nine hours a day on media and children spend six. I am curious to know the average for college students and adults. In hopes to having a career in public education, I think
about what kind of art teacher I want to be everyday. What will my school’s policy on devices be? Will I allow my students to use their cell phones? Will I force students to turn off devices? These are just a few of the questions I must respond to. Everyone is affected by connection today. We live in a social capital built on social media and tech-
nology. I believe it is everyone’s responsibility to solve this problem: students, children, administrators and parents. I want to challenge you as an editor and citizen of Mechanicsville to act on this issue and focus intentionally on the present. Kind regards, Caroline LeRoux Mechanicsville
MAD
An advantage in weaponry and numbers don’t intimidate this group of cowards. Are we really mad yet? Maybe, but I’m not sure the terrorists are getting the message. They don’t understand the threats of diplomats and false promises by politicians do not equate to the fervent anger of a nation united and committed to a common goal. A mad dog has been released on our planet, a vicious killer who knows no humane boundaries, feels no human compassion or abides by the most basic of human values — a compassion for
their fellow man. It might be too late to consider what prompts this type of hate for a majority of the world’s citizens. Religion, in any form, does not condone nor endorse acts of terrorism that kill and maim innocents. As Americans, it’s time to demand a coordinated, sophisticated and intelligent plan to combat the jihadists who kill indiscriminately and threaten our very way of life. Pope Francis recently likened the recent attacks to a “piecemeal Third World War.” Those entrusted with our security must realize that the time of appeasement is lost.
Expecting others to perform the work also amounts to a pie in the sky approach. But, the real solution to a world threat of terrorism is the will of the American people. Once engaged and focused, it’s a populous that does not tolerate inhumanity and disregard for life itself. United, it’s a formidable group that remains resolute until a task is accomplished. Once that single gaze of attention is focused on ISIS or any other terrorist group, their demise will begin. Because, when we do get mad enough, the gloves will come off.
cent victims. As much as we would like to ignore the ominous signs, the simple fact is the threat is real. Although elusive, the enemy is dedicated to a global war, and it’s past time for a nation to respond to a conflict that will eventually reach our borders and terrorize our citizens. It’s not war as we know it, and a large military presence in the Middle East is probably not the solution, for this is an adversary who will not contest their existence on a battlefield.

Christmas Mothers join to share the holiday spirit Hanover County representative Kay Beazley said she learned about differences and similarities in programs By Laura McFarland for The Mechanicsville Local
P
OWHATAN — The dining room of the Foundry in Powhatan County had no Christmas tree, stockings, mistletoe or nativity set in sight, but it was still overflowing with Christmas spirit on Thursday, Nov. 12. The source of the cheer emanated from the 34 women and two men spread throughout the room, most of whom shared a common bond: either now or at one time in their
lives, they all have held the title of Christmas Mother. Hanover Christmas Mother 2015 Kay Beazley was one of several Christmas Mothers from across the region who attended the luncheon hosted by Gayle Walters, her counterpart in Powhatan County. Walters broke with the tradition of only inviting former Powhatan Christmas Mothers to share a meal and invited Christmas Mothers from other localities to join them at the annual event. A similar
program was held in 2011 by the Richmond Christmas Mother. Beazley said she attended to meet other Christmas Mothers and learn about what differences or similarities exist between their programs and the one in Hanover County. “You have some very large groups like Richmond and Chesterfield and some very small ones, but we are all trying to do the same thing for people: be a blessing for someone at Christmas,” Beazley said.
Laura McFarland/Powhatan Today
Nine Christmas Mothers from around the region joined 14 Powhatan Christmas Mothers, past and present, for a luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 12.
Laura McFarland/Powhatan Today
Christmas Mothers from across the region gathered for a luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 12 in Powhatan County. Regional 2015 Christmas Mothers who attended were, from left, front row, Katherine Wintsch, Richmond City; Gayle Walters, Powhatan County; and Jill Cruz, New Kent County; and, back row, Barbara Wilson, Louisa County; Dianna Gordon, Goochland County; Becky Goshorn, 2014 Henrico County; Thomas and Deloris Hooker, Dinwiddie County; Ruby Lee Dillard, Amelia County; and Kay Beazley, Hanover County.
In addition to Beazley, representing Hanover, there were Christmas Mothers from the counties of Amelia, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Henrico, Louisa and New Kent and Richmond City. They joined 14 Powhatan Christmas Mothers, past and present, to share a little about their programs. The experience was eye-opening for many who attended. “The one thing I took away was no two programs are the same, but they all work,” Walters said. Just hearing the variety of Christmas Mothers talk about their programs sparks ideas that the other representatives
can take back and possibly incorporate into their own programs, Beazley said. Some programs have parents come and “shop” among the donated clothes and toys for their children while other groups adopt families to be sponsored by individuals or organizations. In addition to families and children, many of the programs also serve elderly and people with disabilities. The number of people the different programs serve also varies widely, ranging from about 38 families in New Kent County to 1,600 families in Henrico County. In Hanover County, the
The Mechanicsville Local
2014 Christmas Mother program served 602 families and 1,156 children, Beazley said. The program gives out toys, boxes of food, and gift cards for clothes and groceries to local families. Hanover’s program has had more than 1,300 children signed up so far for the 2015 season, she added. “Unfortunately, it is going to be a big year, but our residents always rise to the occasion,” she said. The weeks ahead will be a busy time for Beazley and all of the Hanover program’s volunteers, she said. On see CHRISTMAS, pg. 20

Council toughens rules on long-term motel stays By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — For years, Ashland Town Council has struggled with the problem of homelessness and long-term rentals at the town’s 14 hotels and motels, and has considered numerous measures to combat the situation. Last week, members took action that begins to address the problem. Prompted by an increase in police calls to area motels regarding long-term residents
rooms or more and two floors must obtain an extended stay permit that allows long-term rentals of 30 days or less in 5 percent of the rooms on the site. The changes do not affect motor courts along U.S. 1 because they don’t have 25 rooms or two floors. Ashland Inn owners Siddharth Rangan told council members the new ordinance would affect his revenues, especially in the winter months when tourist traffic is down.
involved in crime, and a willingness of the local faith community to assist and fill gaps the new regulations might create, council unanimously approved new rules regarding long-term rentals at Ashland motels. The action does not target residents who are experiencing hard times and using the motels for transitional housing, but, according to Mayor George Spagna, put teeth in current ordinances governing the rentals. Lewis Rogers of Shiloh Baptist Church praised faith-based groups for cooperating and coming together to help homeless families in Ashland, but expressed support that would limit long-term stays at area motels and hotels. Rangan said he realized there is a problem and has contacted other motel owners in the area. As an initial step, his motel is notifying other owners of problem tenants in an effort to clean up. Shashi Zota, a co-owner, said they have invested $300,000 in improvements since they purchased the property in the past six months. Most who addressed council during a public hearing expressed compassion for those in serious situations that have forced them into a fulltime hotel existence. “We don’t want to put anyone out on the street,” council member Faye Prichard said. However, most of the speakers agreed with council’s proposed action, stating “that something had to be done.” It seems there is a small amount of renters causing the most amount of trouble, according to some speakers. Ashland police responded to 859 calls at the town’s 14 motels and hotels during 2014, a 52 percent increase from 2008. Town Manager Charles Hartgrove said the county studied plans in other localities, including Newport News and Hampton, and looked as far away as California for
answers. Hospitality officials and county staff have met seeking solutions, and Ashland’s faithbased communities have continued to increase their assistance to families in need. Council members said that is a key and vital element of any solution, and finding homes for families who now reside in the hotels is a priority. They also received a firsthand look at the people the new ordinances would affect when it takes effect June 1, 2016. Pauline Hart, a resident at The Apple Garden Inn, said it’s her only option. “If it weren’t for the Apple Garden Inn, I wouldn’t have anywhere to live,” Hart said. Christina Borland told council members some people choose to live in hotels while in transition. “I’m rebuilding my life,” she said and expressed support for long-term residents, stating that they had a vested interest in keeping the facilities safe and clean. Council member Faye O. Prichard referenced Hart as she made her closing comments before endorsing the new rules. “This town and this community cares about every member from the poorest to the richest,” she said. “We knew we
had to make changes because if, in fact, the economic base of this town is destroyed, we have no way to help anyone.” She pointed out the July effective date allows faith-based agencies to work with affected residents to transition them to other living arrangements. She also reinforced a concern that several speakers voiced during the public hearing. “We all know that hotels are not designed for people to live in,” Prichard said. The new measure also requires owners to provide an on-site manager and keep an accurate check in records. Council member Steve Trivett asked for a review of progress to trans-tion-affected residents three months before the measures are implemented. Vice Mayor Ned Henson called for an update a month earlier in March. Council member James Murray said the discussions regarding the motel issue represented “the most important issue I’ve looked at while I’ve been serving the town.” Several speakers identified themselves as pastors at local churches and expressed their commitment to continued efforts to help affected residents, and also praised the cooperation among area churches in the effort.

It was nearly demolished in the 1970s, but the Longmires saved it. They renovated the home to suit modern-day living without destroying the historic integrity of its architecture. Originally owned by the Charles Stebbins family, owners of the famous Stebbins Store in downtown Ashland, the home gave its name to Stebbins Street, which borders the property on the north. After stopping there, participants will continue down Center Street to Howard Street, the original southern border of the town before returning to the museum. The Historic Downtown Business District located along the railroad tracks has not changed in appearance since 1913. The new and old uses of these structures will be discussed. The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Roxy is a 2-year-old female pitbull. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Roxy came to the shelter last month. She is a very sweet and playful dog and does very well with other dogs. Roxy also does quite well on a leash and loves to go for walks. She also does well with new people she meets. Beamer is a (estimated) 10-month-old male domestic short-haired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Beamer has been in the shelter for one month. He is a playful and curious little guy. Beamer loves to play with his cat toys and explore his surroundings. He does great with people and loves all the attention he gets. He also is very well litter trained. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. Local teen taking talents to Texas By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Hawks slip by Generals into region semis By Weldon Bradshaw For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – Control the ball. Trust your defense. That, simply put, was the recipe for Hanover’s 23-17 victory over Dinwiddie Friday in the 4A East Region quarterfinals. Playing on their slippery home turf, the Hawks amassed 320 total yards, 222 rushing and 98 through the air. They ate up large chunks of time with their typical relentless running game and tossed in several well-conceived pass plays to keep the visitors off balance. “The biggest thing is the offensive line,” said quarterback Marcus Bazala. “They really open it up for the running game. “They’re the heart of this team.” Bazala, a 5-8, 200-pound senior, rushed 36 times for 142 yards and one touchdown from two yards out at 6:53 of the second quarter. Three minutes later, he threw a perfect strike to a welldefended Kirkland Shaffner, who hauled it in over his shoulder and on the run for a 34-yard TD to end a 10-play, 55-yard drive. “I rolled out to the right and made the read,” Bazala said. “Kirkland was running a post

backside. He made the play. It was a big momentum change.” Fifty-five seconds before halftime, John Dustin drilled a 32-yard field goal to send the Hawks into the locker room up 16-3 and very much in command. Early in the fourth, they went
up 23-3 when Ben Mahone raced 29-yards up the middle to conclude a quick 46-yard drive. It was on defense, though, that the Hawks were stellar, at least until the Generals (8-4) scored two late touchdowns to keep the crowd from leaving early on a very cold, damp eve-
ning. “The defense played lights out,” said Hanover coach Derek Stoudt. “We threw a lot of stuff at them as far as different cover schemes and different fronts. “They picked all of it up. It’s a very senior-heavy group. You know, I really believe in those
guys. The work they’ve put in culminated here on the field.” Known for a high-octane offense, Dinwiddie averaged 191 yards rushing and 173 passing before its junket to Eastern Hanover. The Hawks (9-3) limited them to 61 yards on the ground

and 100 by air before quarterback Bryce Witt engineered those two late drives that added 112 yards to his stats and resulted in TD passes of 35 yards to Donovan McCrea at 5:54 and 1 yard to Zyan Sturdivant at 1:38. “Dinwiddie’s a good football team,” Stoudt added. “They hit you where you’re not. “They do a good job of scheming you up. We knew we’d have some rocky times, but the kids adjusted and never quit.” The Hawks kept Witt on the run from the get-go, sacked him five times, and forced him to rush his passes numerous times. “We knew we’d have to bring the pressure on him,” said senior linebacker T.J. Allen. “We knew bringing the house on him would work. “In the second half, those sacks were huge. Kept the clock running. Big momentum plays.” Linebacker Tabb Patrick singlehandedly squelched two drives, first with an interception, then with a fumble recovery. “Our goal coming in was no more than 17 points,” Patrick said. “We wanted to limit big plays. We wanted two turnovers which happened. We wanted four punts, and they had plenty. “It was a good all-around effort.” Weldon Bradshaw can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

Douglas, Huskies end Raiders’ playoff run By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor LEESBURG – Tuscarora running back James Douglas made life difficult for visiting Atlee in the second round of the Region 5A North football playoffs Friday night. Douglas pounded away at the Raiders line, occasionally breaking deep into Atlee’s defensive backfield to lead the Huskies (12-0) to a 42-27 victory Friday night. Tenth-seeded Atlee (7-5) took a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and had a chance to turn the game into a rout as the Raiders threatened to score early in the second quarter. But Atlee quarterback Rasharrd Harris threw an interception to his Tuscarora counterpart, quarterback Daniel Smith who was doing double-duty in the defensive backfield. Instead of an Atlee score, the No. 2 Huskies marched from their 15-yard line to close the gap to 21-14 and turn the momentum permanently in their favor. “We had them in the first quarter,” said Atlee head coach Roscoe Johnson. “We made stops, we just never capitalized on the opportunities when we made stops. We were up 21-7 with the ball, ready to score again. We score on that, it’s 287. Anything can happen.” But the heroics that propelled the Raiders to victory over Mountain View the previous week failed to materialize – not for lack of effort, but rather because of the quality of the team they were facing. A large part of that quality was the running back, Douglas, who finished with 42 carries for 247 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 38 yards. Douglas is hard to bring

down, as he is built like a boulder with a low center of gravity. Any Raider unfortunate enough to hit him high usually went flying backwards. Most attempt to snag him with an arm tackle usually resulted in the tackler spinning away like a turnstile. Douglas said they practice every day on how to handle would-be tacklers. “We noticed that at the beginning when I first came here – we had a few games, they tried to take me at the top. It didn’t work,” Douglas said. “Mid-way through the season they started taking me low. Every day we practice, ‘James, they’re going to go low.’ We practice the chopping, at the knees. We practice all the time.” Johnson said the Atlee defenders repeatedly aimed too

high on Douglas. “He’s a big boy,” Johnson said. “You can’t hit him high. You’ve got to hit him down low. We were trying to hit him high when you can’t do that. And we just didn’t wrap up like we were supposed to.” Douglas gave Smith a chance to shine at quarterback and as a rusher, too, as the Atlee defense keyed on the big running back. Smith completed 13 of 21 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown. He ran 15 times for 76 yards and another score. On the other side of the ball, he got the only pick off of his Atlee counterpart while breaking up several other passes. But he said Douglas was the Huskies’ main asset. “James Douglas was phenomenal tonight,” Smith said.
“They couldn’t stop him.” Smith also praised his offensive line, which had gotten off to a shaky start. “Our offensive line, after that first drive, played really, really well,” Smith said. “We went into halftime and I told them, ‘Keep it going. Keep it going.’ They got some good running lanes for James. James made a couple guys miss, and I didn’t have to do much offensively tonight.” The Raiders’ offense was led by quarterback Rasharrd Harris with 13 of 27 completions for 164 yards and two touchdowns. While Atlee did not survive to play another week, Johnson was happy with the season. “It’s always a great season,” Johnson said. “We’re in the playoffs, the second week of playoffs, yeah, it’s a good sea-

ASHLAND – Marymount had some of the faster swimmers, but Randolph-Macon had the greater depth. By the end of their swim meet Saturday, depth is what mattered most. The Yellow Jackets women just edged Marymount 137-125, whereas the RandolphMacon men easily defeated the under-strength Saints 155-90. In both cases, depth proved an advantage for Yellow Jackets. “It was a team win,” said Randolph-Macon swimming coach Brent Kintzer. “It took a little bit more depth on our side to pull that one out.” On the men’s side, the Saints did not have enough swimmers to enter anyone in some of the events. “We literally walk away with free points in those events,” Kintzer said. The Randolph-Macon women started the meet on a winning note when Kata Kylliainen, Alexis Campbell, Rachel Leigh and Sierra Collins came in first in the 200-yard medley relay. ASHLAND – When a basketball team scored 80 points, it should expect to win. But it has to stop the other team from scoring first. The Randolph-Macon women’s basketball team got schooled on that concept Tuesday when it hosted Marymount University in Crenshaw Gymnasium. Despite an otherwise impres-
sive offensive output, the Yellow Jackets fell to the Saints 91-80. At the beginning of the season, Randolph-Macon head coach Carroll LaHaye said her team has struggled get a defensive mindset the past few years. “Normally when you score 80 points in a ball game, you shoot 55 percent from the floor, you out-rebound the other team, you probably have a pretty good chance of winning, LaHaye said. “But today it was
all about getting some stops, and we didn’t get those stops when we needed to or as often as we needed to. LaHaye thinks some of the Yellow Jackets’ troubles stem from a lack of commitment to defense. “My take on it – and believe me, we do teach this in the game, in our practices – but we’re just not committed to see OFFENSE, pg. 31

then you do a pretty good job of trying to prevent her from getting the basketball. … “That’s what we are trying to work on in practice, is to try to prevent the other team from doing what they want to do.” Randolph-Macon’s field goal percentage was 54.5 percent to Marymount’s 53.1 percent. Springers fend off determined L-D challenge By Arthur Utley For the Times-Dispatch HIGHLAND SPRINGS – While much of the attention in the Richmond area 5A South region football playoffs was focused on the Hermitage-L.C. Bird matchup, the region’s topseeded team, Highland Springs, survived a spotlight-worthy challenge from fifth-seeded Lee-Davis. The Springers (11-1) defeated the visiting Confederates 4134 Friday night and set up a rematch with Hermitage in next week’s semifinals. Hermitage defeated three-time defending state champion L.C. Bird 2112. Hermitage, the second seed, edged Highland Springs by a point in the season opener at Highland Springs. “Round two at our place … It’s only fitting we play the game here again,” Highland Springs coach Loren Johnson said. “We’re excited for the opportunity. It’s been a long time since Highland Springs played this deep into the playoffs so we’re just going to take it, relish it, enjoy the night and get ready tomorrow.” During the regular season, Highland Springs crushed LeeDavis 42-0 at Lee-Davis. The Confederates needed less than

Kemp was one of the game’s many stars. He wound up with 96 yards on four receptions, returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown in the high scoring fourth quarter and returned another kickoff 53 yards to set up the Confederates’ last TD. The Springers responded
to L-D’s first TD with two of their own. Quarterback Juwan Carter scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns, and tailback D.J. Anderson added the first of his two TDs to give Highland Springs a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Highland Springs led 20-14
at halftime after a Mummau TD pass to Miles Johnson and Carter’s second rushing TD. Neither team scored in the third quarter (one possession for each team) although LeeDavis tied the score at 20 on Nathan Evans’ 2-yard run early in the fourth.
The teams combined for 41 points in the fourth quarter. The Springers went up by two touchdowns twice, but LeeDavis kept coming before time ran out. “The seniors didn’t want to go home. Nobody wanted to lose. They didn’t want this to be their last game. They came out and gave us their best shot. They played the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” said Highland Springs wide receiver Greg Dortch. “We kept fighting. Once we got up we wanted to finish. And we finished.” Mummau completed 11 of 22 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Carter was 7 for 12 for 172 yards and a TD pass to Dortch. Anderson rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries. “Playing a team for the second time, we weren’t crisp, but you have to give a lot of credit to them. They played great football tonight … it was just a hard-fought second round playoff game,” Johnson said. “They attacked us and they got after us, and I’m glad our kids played well enough to be in the situation we’re in.” Now there’s the rematch with Hermitage. “Let’s go get it,” Dortch said. Atlee boys, Hanover girls fall a game short of state finals By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Neither of the two county volleyball teams left alive in the Virginia High School League playoffs this week got as far as they wanted. semifinals, but could not get beyond their opposition to earn a berth in the state championship matches at the Siegel Center last weekend. The Raiders, on the road in Virginia Beach, picked off a set from host Princess Anne, but still fell short to the Cavaliers 22-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-29 Tuesday night. The Hawks, also on the road

in Leesburg, fell to Loudon County 25-17, 25-16, 25-13 Tuesday. In Atlee’s case, head coach Nick Robinson said the team started playing to avoid losing. “[Princess Anne] had their two go-to guys, but we did what we practiced and were supposed to do in set one and won,” Robinson said. “In sets two, three and four, I think we
played a bit more timid, like we were trying to not make mistakes and just score points. When you do that, you give the other team all the momentum.” The Hawks were not giving away any momentum, but they were running into a Raiders team at its season peak. “Loudon County played an almost flawless game,” said Hanover head coach Karl Lippa.
“Their coach was, like, ‘This is the best match we played all season.’” Loudon County was nearly perfect in all aspects of the game. “They did not miss a single serve the entire match. … They didn’t serve a single ball into the net or out of bounds,” Lippa said. “We think that they missed maybe five attacks all night. …
It was almost the equivalent of throwing a no-hitter in a World Series.” The Hawks will lose the heart of its team this year – six seniors will graduate – as well as their coach, Karl Lippa, who is stepping down with the group he’s coached since they were in eighth grade. Atlee is losing three starters to graduation this year.
