with other entries for a coveted spot on the governor’s holiday tree. The Town of Ashland was previously informed by the Virginia Municipal League (VML) that the theme for ornaments to be placed on the 2015 governor’s holiday tree was “Localities of the Commonwealth.” The Ashland Main Street Association (AMSA) then took over as facilitator of the selection process, set up guidelines for the ornament according to those provided by the VML, and launched the competition. Artists and residents who wanted to participate in the competition were asked to make a Christmas ornament that represented the Ashland community and its spirit. to oversee a shooting range in western Hanover County. In 2005, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors modernized those restrictions and added some restrictions for operation at the club, including guidelines for hours of operation and a limit on the number of memberships the group could accept. Last week, the club approached the supervisors and asked for some of those restrictions to be revised, allowing more special events, unlimited memberships and a go-ahead for the construction of an indoor shooting range on the property. Brennen Keene, an attorney representing Cavalier, said that limiting the number of shooting stations would accomplish the same goal as a membership ban. While the relationship see GUN, pg. 8

The 172-page book is her first novel, and falls into the popular “Young Adult Fiction” category. Experimentals follows Macie Anderson, one of a group of children and teens who are adopted by the government and live in a lab, where they are experimented upon daily. While Macie understands her life is different, she doesn’t consider it bad until a new drug is introduced that starts killing the lab residents one by one. Hannah recently was profiled in an article in The Mechanicsville Local. The article may be found online at this

MDA’s work offers hopeful season
From the editor
Are you ready? Santa is coming to town The countdown has begun: Santa Claus will arrive in the Village of Mechanicsville on Sunday, Dec. 6. Thanks for the Mechanicsville Rotary Club and the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club, this is one of the most enjoyable events of the year. Streets are lined with spectators and marching bands, floats, community and business leaders, civic organizations, elected officials, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches, business — just about everybody you can think of is in the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade. There’s such excitement in the air as participants line up for the official start at 2 p.m. While we don’t need to discuss my age, it’s one of those events that makes you feel like a kid again. The excitement is contagious. We’re proud to be part of the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade and extend our thanks to all the volunteers who work so diligently to make it a success every year. And if you see some scouts selling concessions, help them out. You know they’re raising money for a good cause. Without question, we’ll be there ready for a good time and getting photos as the parade passes by us. So, be prepared to smile for the camera. Yes, life in the Ville is good and we’re eagerly awaiting another Christmas parade filled with the spirit of the season. Oh, and did I tell you Santa Claus will be there? In other words, it’s time to get on the nice list if you aren’t already. Hmm . . . wonder where my name is this year. Just kidding — I’ve done my best to be nice. I came from coal country and a lump of coal is the last thing on my wish list.
Speaking of Christmas If you would like to share photos of your home and its Christmas decorations, please do so. Send them to mkinser@mechlocal.com. You also can post them on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/mechlocal. See you Sunday in the Village. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Six years ago, I sat in a doctor’s office and received the most devastating news any parent can hear — a diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy for my son Jack. It came accompanied by a particular dismal prognosis. For the next few weeks, I struggled with thoughts of what might happen, or could happen, or, inevitably, would happen. Since the diagnosis, we’ve depended on the strength of the DMD community for support and guidance through some trying times. When I first walked out of that doctor’s office, I was filled with a sense of hopelessness, and felt helpless to combat such an overwhelming and devastating disease. As the years have progressed, that
hopelessness has been replaced, and I have been inspired by the efforts of a group of parents who have refused to give up on their children’s future. In recent years, they have been a vocal and vital voice for change, lobbying the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to reform approval methods and time periods for drugs that might offer hope to our community. Those efforts have resulted in a resurgence of efforts to find cures and treatments for DMD. Dr. Laura Hagerty, the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s scientific program officer, recently updated progress on three major drugs that are in their final stages, all of which offer real hope for treatment and cure of DMD. She wrote in a recent article: “It’s taken MDA 65 years of unwavering resolve, $209 million
— more than any other organization aside from the federal government — as well as countless hours in the labs and clinics, and in the lives of MDA staff, researchers, clinicians and the families fighting this disease, to get to where we are today. Closer than ever. Closer to treatments. Closer to cures.” I urge my fellow members of the Duchenne community to accept the promising news and allow that element of hope in to their lives. After years of heartbreak and dismay as progress seemed painfully slow as we watched time run out for many who we knew and loved, it’s time to let hope work its magic. An 11-year-old boy is naturally inquisitive, and my son Jack is no different. Aspects of his disease he’s see HOPEFUL, pg. 8

Dead animals on roadway become cause of frustration I have become weary and frustrated with dead animals on Mechanicsville roadways for extended periods -- up to two weeks -- the last three were hit on Lee Davis Road and the lingering smell was disturbing just driving between Pole Green Road and the Lee Davis intersection. I felt sorry for the kids at Stonewall Jackson Middle School and Lee-Davis High School arriving and departing school -- plus all the folks who live along that route, including those at Hanover Green. Finally driving down with my windows closed and holding my breath, I called the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office dispatch and asked about the removal. I was told it was the responsibility of the Virginia Department of Transportation but she did not have a number -- so I went online, found a Richmond number, then was given another number to put in a work order, which, FYI, is 1-800-3677623 -- and I also reported a board in the same intersection for over a week, which was a safety obstacle. The debris was removed by the next day and roads are clean again. I am mystified why deputies and other county officials are up and down this road daily and not one of them made
the call -- they should have that number in their speed dial -- part of everyone’s job is to keep our town clean and safe, but it is a top job for county officials. It’s troubling to explain to 3-year-olds in the backseat not only what is on the road but the cause of the smell. Perhaps if everyone kept the number with them, we can all help, but, sheriff [Col. David R. Hines], please give this number to your deputies so that when they are patrolling, they can report issues to the right department. Thanks. Patsy Lassiter Mechanicsville

by Oct. 4 and a decision was made by a panel of judges by Oct. 7, according to Caroline Coronado. After the judges had made their decision, Nancy Cozart, who acted as the point person for the process, contacted the Coronados to let them know the ornament they created, a sterling silver and Austrian Swarovski crystal replica of the Ashland Theater, had been selected to represent Ashland on the governor’s holiday tree. “I probably would have said work quickly in a base metal, but, for Alvaro, it was the Governor’s Mansion, sterling silver and that’s it,â€? said Caroline Coronado. “It was, you know, the elevation, in any design we match use with materials. ‌ The elements and quality were as important as the aesthetics. It wasn’t
about creating an illusion; it was about quality, just like Ashland.â€? Because their decision to create an ornament was last minute, the Coronados worked literally around the clock, sleeping for only about two hours during the two days it took to design and construct the piece. Alvaro made the ornament entirely from scratch, melting bars of silver, cutting out metal pieces by hand, and putting together wires to secure it. Caroline and Alvaro Coronado made it to Gallery Flux, where ornaments were submitted, a mere 10 minutes before the deadline cutoff. “We ran out of here literally ‌ we grabbed the umbrella, it was pouring, it was windy and we actually thought it would be faster if we just ran down to Gallery Flux,â€? Caroline Coronado said. ‌ “It was kind of funny because we were running down the
street and we both took the umbrella and turned face on to the theater, looked up on it and we go ‘Yeah, let’s go.’ We turned around and ran the rest of the way. When the Coronados learned that their ornament design has been selected to represent Ashland on the governor’s holiday tree they were both surprised and honored. “We know almost every artist in Ashland and Hanover [County] and we know the caliber of talent that’s out there, Caroline Coronado said. When brainstorming ideas for their ornament concept, Alvaro and Caroline chose to depict the Ashland Theater because it seems to always be at the center of activities, festivals and people’s conversations in town. “There’s no reason to create something when there are see ORNAMENT, pg. 8

Now that their ornament has been sent to the Governor’s Mansion, the Coronados are working, order-by-order, on an adaptation version of the decoration. “We did not have a plan for making a version that people would want to purchase, but, in the promotion, in the press releases with regard to the one on the Governor’s Mansion, people said ‘I want one, I want one, how do I get

the kindness of the numerous strangers and friends who have supported us in this journey have provided immeasurable strength to endure and continue to fight, both for Jack and me. Their thoughts, their kindness have provided a sense of Thanksgiving that only a community that cares can provide, and that’s a message of goodwill and charity that keeps hope alive, for all of us.

Nativity display fundraiser continues at Catholic Church of the Redeemer By Sheila Talley for The Mechanicsville Local
M
ECHANICSVILLE — Eight years ago, an idea was born at the Catholic Church of the Redeemer in Mechanicsville by Nancy Malone, a parishioner. The idea — “No Room at the Inn” — was to present a Nativity display as a fundraiser to help those who are homeless in the way Jesus was at his birth. At that time, I’m sure many wondered how this would work and wondered if it would be successful. Since then, many parishioners have jumped on the bandwagon and helped in all areas of this annual event. It takes a parish to bring all the many facets of this project to success. In the past eight year over $89,000 has been raised and given to organizations, who aid the homeless. This event is now more than a fundraiser. Some families look forward each year to beginning their Advent Season at the church. Parents and grandparents bring children to the children’s activity room to dress up in the costumes of Nativity characters. There are nativities to play with, crafts to do or take home, and games to play. They also may take part in a “find the Nativity” hunt in the nativities exhibit to locate unusual or special ones from 350 different nativity scenes on display. This may be Jesus with a cat, how many turtles or polar bears, or a shepherd pointing to the sky. (They find answers and learn more about the Bible).

Others come each year to walk quietly among the nativities and recall Christmases past and dream of Christmases to come. Many say this is the beginning of their feelings of Christmas spirit. Not only are they helping others, who are less fortunate, they are meeting friends they haven’t seen in awhile. They are enjoying a few moments away from the rush of the commercial side of Christmas. The Preview Gala will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, featuring silent and live auctions, music, food and fun and cheer. You can come dressed up or casual; with a date or solo or with your best friends. This is the time to bid on the silent auction and laugh as you watch or bid on items in the live auction.
“No Room at the Inn” will be open with a Preview Gala, which will be presented from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Catholic Church of the Redeemer in Mechanicsville. The photos include, from left, top, wise men on llamas from Peru; the coconut and nativity from Hawaii; from left at left, papier mache nativity from Haiti; and the word “Peace” as a symbolic reminder of the birth of the Christ Child.
Guests are in a celebratory mood. Friends become competitive as they bid against friends on vacation cottages, dinners at their home; tickets to concerts, memberships to gyms and much more. It’s all a surprise for the guests of this event because those committee members find new and different venues each year. Tickets to this magical evening are $25 in advance or $30 at the door plus allows visiting the exhibit over the weekend. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are

toppers created by the design experts with all freshly cut greens. Pine Grove Farm features a 1905 barn, which is heated with a wood stove. Hot chocolate, tea, coffee, cider and plates and plates of homemade goodies will be provided. In keeping with the spirit of “green,” special Deck the Halls! mugs are used. The entry donation is $30 for adults and $10 for children through today (Wednesday, Dec. 2). Carolyn Peart said the entrance donation is less than the typical cost of one wreath or one centerpiece or any fresh holiday decoration. According to Carolyn, the farm has been in existence since the 1700s though the main house was not built until 1910 on top of the foundation for a small two-story one-
room building, which was built in 1854. The outbuildings – the original smokehouse, work shed, bunk house, and food and dairy storage shed —- are still being used, as well as the barn, which dates to 1905. The barn was renovated in 2002 and turned into Jerry Peart’s art studio, preserving the original heart pine loft flooring and as much of the original structure as possible. “We try to share the blessings of this beautiful farm for charitable causes,” Carolyn said. “The event is held in the backyard, a huge open space bordered by the outbuildings on one side and beautiful tall pines on the other,” she added. The Pearts moved to Ashland from Chicago, Illinois, permanently in 2003. In September 2004, Carolyn and her sister, Patrice Richman of Richmond, were trimming boxwoods. Carolyn turned to Patrice and said, “Don’t folks
in the South use this stuff for Christmas decorations?” “And,” she said, “that’s how it began.” Patrice was a volunteer for Hilliard House and they decided to hold a small fundraiser for that charity. They postponed the trimming until December, added greenery from Carolyn’s holly, cedar trees, hemlocks, pine trees, magnolia, got donations of ribbon and wreath forms from Vogue Flowers, got help from Ashwood Gardens and invited Carolyn’s new friends and the families of Patrice’s Girl Scout Troop. Thirty-five people came, made wreaths and swags, made cash donations to Hilliard House. Through the years, Carolyn said they have seen these attendance numbers: 2004, 35; 2005, no event; 2006, 70; 2007, 125; 2008, 225; 2009, 250; 2010, 380; 2011, 420; 2012, 385; 2013, 185

ASHLAND — While this past summer is still fresh in our minds, the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department is planning for summer 2016. Positions of recreation supervisor, recreation aide, therapeutic recreation aide and leader-in-training are open and waiting to be filled. The recreation supervisor position closed on Nov. 16. The recreation supervisor position is a challenging yet rewarding position. The supervisors for 2016 will be more involved in the camp and program plan-

of it and the traffic it would put on the roads at night. That road is dark at night and can’t handle the amount of traffic that would be there.” Boondock Lane is a narrow, winding dirt road that provides the only access to Cavalier. Some neighbors who live along the road have erected speed bumps to slow traffic entering and exiting the facility. Keene said Cavalier has attempted to reach agreement with the neighbors regarding the upkeep and maintenance of Boondock Road with the club agreeing to pay 80 percent of the upkeep. Those negotia-
ning during the off-season, so the Parks and Rec Department is starting the hiring process much earlier than has been done in previous years. Supervisors will have the opportunity to plan, research and coordinate the day to day calendar of activities for the entire summer. From in-depth craft projects to stimulating large and small group games, the supervisors are getting a head start for what will be an amazing, safe, adventurous, fun and fulling summer camp season for next year. plans for the original ornament once it is returned to the Coronados at the close of the holiday season, but the couple said they have a few different ideas in mind, including offering it as an auction item at a
town fundraising event. “I think you have a social responsibility — Alvaro and I both agree on this — that there’s a social responsibility to the community when you use something that’s in their
likeness, their image; you’re representing them,” Caroline Coronado said. “So I think we are open to ideas about that.” The Coronados own and operate a jewelry store, Alvaro Coronado Inc. in Ashland.
tions are ongoing. Dan Canter, a Cavalier member, voiced his concerns regarding unlimited memberships and the “infinite” amount of traffic it would create in the future. “When you institute an infinite membership and one child is injured from the infinite traffic, you cannot unring that bell. You can’t unvote that vote,” he said. But, the number of people who spoke in opposition was doubled by the number of enthusiasts who showed up to speak up in favor of the new guidelines. Mike Gladstone spoke in favor of eliminating the membership restrictions. “It took
four years for my application to be approved. I ask that you take that restriction off and let the market determine the membership.” Ten-year Cavalier member Randy McFarland urged the board to support the requested changes, especially the expansion of Shooting Range #5. “This is a matter of operational efficiency. The current design has a basic flaw. For parts of Range 5 to be used, other parts need to be shut down,” McFarland said. “We need to keep out of each other’s way out there.” Other speakers pointed to expanded training and safety procedures the changes would facilitate. Proponents and opponents of the revisions mutually agreed that Cavalier has been a valuable member of the community, sponsoring events like the Taste of Hanover and the Montpelier Wine Festival. Supervisors chair Wayne Hazzard, South Anna District, also lauded the club for its good deeds in the communi-
ty, but amended their Special Exemption Permit request slightly before moving for approval. Sunday operational hours will cease at 3 p.m., allowing neighbors quiet time, and no lights will be placed on the side of the new indoor range that would affect neighboring residents. Hazzard also suggested limiting new memberships to 10 percent annually, or 70 new members per year. The supervisors agreed unanimously, and approved the club’s request with the modifications. “This is a community effort,” Hazzard said. “It’s important that we work together. The new guidelines will be included in a new Special Exemption that would eliminate the current CUP while leaving in place its restrictions. That action now goes back to the Hanover County Planning Commission for approval, but Cavalier can immediately proceed with the improvements.

Local teen taking talents to Texas By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `

Hanover runs out of magic in region semis By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch NORFOLK – With 5:27 left in the game, Hanover’s magic ran out. The Hawks’ offense had been clicking. It converted fourth-down attempts and onside kicks. After being blown out in the first half, they were suddenly down by just 8 points and within striking distance. Then Marcus Bazala’s pass on a fake punt zipped through his receiver’s hands, Lake Taylor scored six plays later, and Hanover lost 37-22 on Friday night in the 4A East region semifinals. Lake Taylor (13-0) will oppose Courtland in the 4A state semifinals. Hanover ends its season 9-4. Lake Taylor scored on its first three possessions and led 22-3 at halftime. At that point, it looked as if the Titans would run away with victory. But the Hawks chipped away in the second half. They strung together an 11-play touchdown drive in the third quarter, then a nine-play drive in the fourth. Both touchdowns were scored from 1 yard out by junior quarterback Clayton Cheatham, who finished with 105 rushing yards and 100 passing yards. There was no major change in the game plan, Hanover coach Derek Stoudt said. Just a few tweaks to the offensive line and the defense.

Hanover quarterback Clayton Cheatham earns yards in the Hawks’ 37-22 loss to Lake Taylor in a Region 4A East semifinal Friday.
“We just executed,” Stoudt said. Down 11 points, Hanover converted an onside kick by senior T.J. Allen. Then the Hawks orchestrated a 15-yard scoring drive that ended in a 31-yard field goal by freshman John Dustin. Along the way, the Hawks converted two fourthdown attempts. All of a sudden, the Hawks were down just 8 points with 6:23 to go. Then they stun-

ningly pulled off another successful onside kick, their second in two tries. They’re well rehearsed plays, Stoudt said, that have been in the playbook since August. Hanover had the ball and a chance to tie the game. But just three plays later, it faced fourthand-7. The Hawks lined up to punt, but there was no chance the Hawks would give the ball away. The ball was snapped directly to Bazala, who quickly
turned and fired the ball. But the pass went high, and Hanover turned the ball over on downs. Its run of good fortune was over. Six plays later, Lake Taylor scored again and put the game out of reach. Dazmine Palmer recorded three touchdowns and rushed for 185 yards on just 10 carries for the Titans, who are the defending 4A state champs. While Lake Taylor’s offense moved in big strikes, Hanover’s
was more plodding. The Hawks dominated time of possession 33:55 to 14:05. Hanover ran 82 plays to Lake Taylor’s 33. Twice Lake Taylor scored on the first play of a possession. “Sometimes you can score too fast,” Lake Taylor coach Hank Sawyer said. “But you got to match a score with a score, and we did that.” Hanover graduates all five
Atlee football coach Roscoe Johnson informed his players Tuesday that he won’t return to the team next season. Johnson has accepted a position as an administrator at Chickahominy Middle School in Hanover County. In the three years before Johnson was hired, Atlee went 4-26. During his nine years there, Johnson compiled a record of 56-42. After losing more games than he won the first two seasons, the Raiders won five or more each of the next seven years. County basketball teams have room to grow champion Henrico still around, success won’t come easy. “Keys to success for us will be attention to detail in all phases of the game,” Bishop said. “We will be a much better defensive team this year and will rely on that to turn into offense.”
By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – New seasons bring plenty of uncertainty to high school teams, and this winter season is no exception to Hanover County’s basketball teams. In addition to the usual turnover due to graduation, Atlee moves to a new conference and region, where it will join Patrick Henry in Conference 16 and Region 5A North. The Lee-Davis boys have a new coach. Many of the teams will face the usual challenges: scarcity of experience and lack of size, especially on the girls teams. The three teams with the most experienced rosters are Hanover’s boys Atlee’s boys and Atlee’s girls. Whether that experience translates into deep runs into their respective conference playoffs remains to be seen. Boys Teams Hanover Hanover head coach Darren Thornton is bullish on the Hawks’ chances in Conference 20. With five seniors returning, including two of the area’s top two scorers – senior guard/forward Alan Dabney (21 points per game) and junior guard/ forward Jason Wade (17 ppg) – he might have good reason for optimism. “We have a lot of experience returning from last year with two of the top ten scorers in the area,” Thornton said. “Our versatile players with the ability to play numerous positions helps us create mismatches and apply pressure defense.” One of the team’s biggest challenges will be “protecting guard Robert Jenkins (16.7 ppg), guard Andrew Foster and the paint,” Thornton said. forward Andrew Dages, all of whom share duties as team capAtlee The Raiders have three expe- tains. “How our season goes will rienced seniors returning: point
Patrick Henry Patriots head coach Randy Anderson expects his team to finish in the middle of the Conference 16 pack, but with just two starters – junior guard Marcus Holman (10 ppg) and senior guard Sawyer Boyd – returning, the rest of the team will have to grow into their roles on the court. They may have to grow, period, as Anderson notes the Patriots lack height and bulk. But they should be in good shape in other areas. “Our guard play should be good and overall better team chemistry,” Anderson said. Dave Lawrence/The Local
Above, Henrico’s Jason Wade (left), shown here in a drive against Henrico’s Monte Buckingham in January, was one of the Hawks’ leading scorers last season. He and Alan Dabney, Hanover’s top scorer last year, return to lead the team in its 2015-16 campaign. utes played at the varsity level, this is one of the most inexperienced teams we’ve had here but I really like the team chemistry and the leadership provided by our three senior captains.” The Raiders will have to compensate for a lack of size, however. “We will be a very small team so our rebounding, especially on the defensive end, will be crucial,” Reynolds said. “We will be a good ball-handling and depend a great deal on these passing team and we expect to three players,” said Atlee head be a good solid defensive team coach Phil Reynolds, who noted again this year.” that the amount of varsity expeLee-Davis rience declines quite a bit after The Confederates begin the those three. “In terms of min-

They begin the season with a lot of inexperienced players, too, with senior guard Irving Jones bringing the bulk of the team’s leadership this season. “We will be very young so will rely on our senior Irving Jones to lead us in practice and in games,” Bishop said. The Confederates will be in a new Conference 11 lineup, with Atlee off to Conference 16 and Highland Springs off to Conference 12. But, with defending Group 5A state

Girls Teams Atlee With four starters returning, Atlee may be the most experienced girls team in the county, but it may be hard to tell whether that experience will translate to success in an unfamiliar Conference 16. Still, Raiders head coach Michael Rawlings is pretty confident about his team’s chances. “I suspect we will make a good showing in the area. Offensively, we will be very capable,” Rawlings said. “Hopefully, team defense can help with the lack of quickness and exceptional athleticism.” Senior guard/forward Ashley Weaver returns. She averaged 19.9 points per game last season, and Rawlings suspects she’ll do even better this one. Junior forward Alyse Armentrout, who see GROW, pg. 33

Five-minute Captains’ burst dooms R-MC By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – RandolphMacon’s men’s basketball team held its own against visiting Christopher Newport for the first 15 minutes of the first half and for all of the second half. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, they stumbled the final five minutes of the first half, letting the Captains slip away from a 27-27 tie with 5:13 left in the half to stake an 11-point lead at intermission and eventually claim a 74-65 win over the hosts in Crenshaw Gymnasium Tuesday night. Christopher Newport’s Justin Hampton ignited the 154 run that gave the Captains the big halftime lead with a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 4:41 left. The burst that followed proved costly to RandolphMacon (1-3). “You always want to go into halftime with the momentum,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Josh Merkel. “They punched us in the mouth, not early, but late in that half and it ended up being the difference in the game. I thought we competed better in the second half, but we can’t have stretches like that. Playing against a good team, a

well-coached team, a veteran team, there’s less room for error. We’ve got to be better.” Christopher Newport head coach John Krikorian said the Captains (3-0) work hard to go into halftime with the edge. “We kind of pride ourselves on that point in the game,” Krikorian said. “As you saw we try to apply a lot of pressure. We have some depth. We try to play a lot of guys. Our hope is that by the end of that half, some [opposing] guys are getting a little bit winded, their shots are a little bit shorter. That’s what happened. “Macon came out of the gates, I thought, making some really difficult shots. We know they would – it’s that kind of a game. But I thought at the end of the half those shots were a little shorter and they were a step shorter, and our rotation allowed our guys to be a little fresher.” Christopher Newport played 13 players while the Yellow Jackets played only 10, but those 10 fared better in the second half, outscoring the Captains 34-32. “Offensively, when we did trust each other and make two, three passes, make the extra pass, I thought we really did
while Cheatham was injured. What the offense will look like next year, Stoudt couldn’t say just yet. Cheatham will return, but he’s suffered injuries the past two seasons after taking the bulk of the carries in a physical, downhill running attack. When Cheatham did play, he put up big numbers and moved his team down the field one bruising carry at a time. Eric Kolenich can be reached at ekolenich@timesdispatch. com.

“Their youth and inexperience, maybe they weren’t quite as aggressive or able to execute when they had cut it to six or seven,” Krikorian said. “I think our guys, with that experience, we were able to execute on offense which is not something, you know, we’ve been great at over the years.” Merkel does not use the word “rebuilding” to describe a season in which a team has lost a lot of experience – but the Yellow Jackets did lose quite a bit of experience and size to graduation last year. He said it will take some time for this team to gel, and that it is getting better. “We’re a work in progress. I think that shows in our score,” Merkel said. “But also there are some positives to take away Dave Lawrence/The Local from this game. best year under Johnson was 2013, when they went 11-2 and reached the third round of the 5A South playoffs. Before coming to Atlee, Johnson was the defensive coordinator at Robert E. Lee in Staunton. He wanted a head coaching job, and he sort of stumbled upon the Atlee position. “I was looking, and it just popped up,” Johnson said. “It was almost like God sent me here.” It was funny, he said, to go from Lee High to Atlee High. From the beginning, he was confident he could change foot-
ball at Atlee High School. He got participation numbers up and increased school spirit. The atmosphere at football games has changed a good deal. Now there’s a big screen television at concession stand showing team highlights and a skybox in the south end zone. “I always tried to step back and think big picture,” Johnson said. One high water mark, Johnson said, was beating Patrick Henry in 2009. It was a feat his school hadn’t accomplished in 16 years. “It was a tribute to the hard work of the kids,” Johnson said. His 56 wins are the most by a football coach at Atlee, which played its first season in 1991. He also coaches baseball

MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee’s football season may be over, but senior lineman Andrew Tilton’s season has a couple of weeks to go. Tilton was one of 90 high school seniors selected to participate in the Blue-Grey AllAmerican Bowl at the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday, Dec. 20. Tilton was selected after a series of combines: first a regional combine at the Washington Redskins training camp in Richmond in May, then at a super combine at AT&T Stadium in June. He said it was a surprise to be selected out of 8,000 athletes who competed for one of the 90 spots. “It was different,” Tilton said. “It was weird because I was going up against kids from all over the United States. I just went out there and I tried my hardest.” The selection process was rigorous. “I had to do a workout with 40-yard dash, bench [press]. I had to do the shuttle,” Tilton

But one of those guards, sophomore Whitney Hopson, still averaged 7 points per game last season.
