ECHANICSVILLE — Sunny skies and tons of Christmas cheer greeted the several thousand people who lined the streets Sunday, Dec. 6, for the annual Mechanicsville Rotary Club/Mechanicsville Ruritan Club Christmas Parade in the Village. Temperatures in the low 50s and an almost cloudless day set the stage on for a great parade, said announcer Harold Padgett, past president of the Rotary Club. “This is a beautiful day – about as close to a perfect day as I have ever seen for the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade,” he said, adding it was a huge improvement over the frigid weather spectators

HANOVER — “This Wonderful Life” by Steve Murray opened late last month and continues through Sunday, Jan. 10, at Hanover Tavern at 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road in Hanover. The production is being presented by the Virginia Repertory Theatre. The classic denizens of Bedford Falls come to life in this one-man, stage adaptation of the iconic screenplay “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Richmond favorite Scott Wichmann skillfully inhabits every character from Bedford Falls as he reprises his role from Virginia Rep’s 2008 production. He most recently starred in “Peter and the Starcatcher” as Black Stache at Virginia Rep’s November Theatre and “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” as Barney Cashman at Hanover Tavern. Other Virginia Rep credits include “Say Goodnight Gracie” (RTCC Award for Best Actor), “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Fully Committed,” and “The Producers.” John Moon returns to Virginia Rep to direct the production. Recent directing credits include “The Maggie Walker Story,” “Treasure Island,” “Vanya” and “Sonia and Masha” and “Spike” (Virginia Rep), “You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running” (Swift Creek Mill Dinner Theatre), and “August: Osage County” (Company of Fools). For ticket information, call the Box Office at 804-282-2620 or email www.va-rep.org. Full price tickets are $38. Discount group rates and rush tickets are available. U-Tix for college and high school students are $10. They are available the day of the show by phone or in person. A student ID is required. Performances are scheduled for: 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday and second Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s beginning to smell like Christmas
From the editor
’Tis the season — it’s great to be in Hanover OK, I’ll admit it — when it comes to the holidays, especially Christmas, I’m a big kid at heart. I love the music, the decorations, the festivities and, of course, celebrating the birth of the Christ child. Hanover County is a wonderful place to be this time of the year, because you can’t say there isn’t something to do or see or take part in any day or weekend. We are full of Christmas cheer and enjoy sharing it. Such was the case last weekend as the Mechanicsville Rotary Club and Mechanicsville Ruritan Club joined forces once again for a spectacular parade through the Village of Mechanicsville. With staff from The Mechanicsville Local serving as judges, including yours truly, we have one of the best seats for viewing on the grandstand. (Thank you to Tommy Thompson of Mechanicsville Drug Store for always being so gracious and accommodating on parade day.) Just up the road, the Town of Ashland was the scene of Light Up the Tracks! on Saturday and Sunday was filled with the Santa Train, Deck the Halls! and a guided Christmas walking tour. Talk about a full schedule. And we were out and about in both areas of the county making sure our readers of The Mechanicsville Local and The Hanover Local received plenty of coverage from the village and the town. For other communities in Hanover County, if you’ve got something planned, give us a call at 804-775-4622 or send an email to mkinser@ mechlocal.com.
Christmas Mother donations, Santa Runs We so enjoy sharing the countless names of donors to the 2015 Hanover Christmas Mother program. How inspiring to see all these folks giving to such a worthwhile cause. And it’s not too late. If you want to donate, send your contribution to Hanover Christmas Mother, P.O. Box 39, Doswell VA 23047. Take note of the Santa Runs schedule. We’ve had some inquiries and we know your children don’t want to miss his visit in your neighborhood. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
O
ver the years, I’ve written about every aspect of the holiday season imaginable multiplied by a dozen. Most of those reflections have centered on the little things, the family and friends that make our time together at the holidays special. When most of us think of our childhood and remember important events in our lives, many of them involve the holidays or family gatherings. Last week, it suddenly dawned on me that I’ve never described one of my most precious and treasured memories. Miss Lilly’s Whiskey Cake was already a legend when I had my first bite as a child. My grandmother had made the
cake all of her life, won numerous blue ribbons with its secret recipe, and served it at every family reunion, birthday and holiday gathering I can remember. The cake contained a decadent mix of goodies that, when blended just right, produced a pound cake that was indescribably good. As an impatient and bothersome teenager not entirely happy being at grandmother’s house in Maryland, away from my friends, at Christmastime, I ventured into her large kitchen as she was just retrieving a huge mixing bowl from her pantry. “What are you making?” I asked. “Whiskey cake,” she replied. With hesitance, she allowed me to sit at the kitchen table and watch her perform her magic with flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla and a healthy shot of Jack Daniels whiskey.
Since her death, many have tried to duplicate her success with the cake, and many came close. The best version and closest recreation came from my high school girlfriend’s mother, who got the recipe from my mother. Truth be known, I didn’t think about Nannie’s whiskey cake for years, as traditions are lost and new ones installed. At some family gatherings, some relatives would make an attempt at the cake, but no one in this generation could make Miss Lilly’s whiskey cake. When I had my first child and the holidays rolled around, I decided it was time for me to attempt the seemingly unattainable. But, I had a secret weapon that was given to me straight from the see SMELL, pg. 8

Sheriff clarifies points made in letter about road hazards In reference to a letter written by Patsy Lassiter in the Dec. 2, 2015, edition of The Mechanicsville Local. Thank you for taking the time to share your story. It’s an excellent example of how easy it is to get involved in making a positive difference in our community. I will clarify some of the points to which you made reference. My deputies regularly report all road hazards to the Hanover County Emergency Communications Center via their in-car radios. The Hanover County Emergency Communications Center will then contact the appropriate agency to address the hazard. In your case, the Virginia Department of Transportation was the correct agency. Let me also clarify, neither the Hanover County Emergency Communications Center or the Virginia Department of Transportation are staffed or managed by the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. The Hanover County Emergency Communications Center ultimately falls under the leadership of the County Administrator. I am aware a supervisor from the Hanover County Emergency Communications Center has spoken to you about this matter and has shared your concerns with us.
Regardless, your genuine concern for your neighbor’s safety and the appreciation you have for clean roadways was clear in your letter. If I or any member of my staff may assist you with any future issue, please call us directly at 804-365-6110. I’m confident we will be able to address your need in a timely manner or direct you to the responsible agency. Sincerely, Col. David R. Hines Sheriff

Text 911 is a complement to existing voice-based service, according to Shaffer, and citizens are encouraged to call when it’s possible. It’s the first, best option. But, in, some situations, Shaffer stressed, “Call if you can, text if you can’t,” the catch phrase used to raise public awareness and educate those who could benefit from the new service. “It’s noteworthy how this will assist our hearing impaired community as this service will offer them true mobile access to 911,” Shaffer said. Text 911 is available throughout Hanover County and includes the Ashland area. Shaffer said that the county had successfully tested the service over the past two months with the wireless communi-

ty, and began offering it on Tuesday, Dec. 1. He outlined scenarios where Text to 911 could be used. They included: Emergency use by deaf or speech impaired citizens. Persons in a situation where calling 911 is not a safe option. Medical emergencies that make calling impossible. Emergencies that occur in areas where 911 phone access is limited. The new service will be available on most providers, including Verizon, Sprint,
AT&T and Cricket. Shaffer also outlined how to text to 911 and urged users to use simple words to alert personnel of your location after typing in “911” in the “To” field. Responders will employ an abbreviated protocol when dealing with text messages, but will respond with simple and important questions. Messages from text to 911 are received directly by Hanover’s call center. The service is available to anyone who has cellular service. Texting also is a viable option when phone lines are overloaded in emergency situations. “Once the connection to 911 is established, it cannot be terminated by anyone other than the 911 call center so there is a communications path between the sender of the message and the 911 center. We won’t lose connection,” Shaffer said. Shaffer said the success of the program depends on community outreach making residents aware of the new service, and identifying technology issues that could arise with the new system.

chef ’s hands to mine, a handwritten set of notes explaining how to make the cake, with all the little details and Miss Lilly’s helpful hints. My first attempt didn’t work out well. Honestly, the first dozen or two cakes missed the mark, purely edible but not similar to the classic. I’ve been making the cake for years now, and the result is an amazing facsimile of Miss Lilly’s creation, always the first to disappear at gatherings or parties. That faded sheet of paper with Nannie’s recipe is long lost and probably hidden in the middle of an outdated cookbook. But, the recipe is strong in my mind, and, Thanksgiving night, my daughter Emma put me to the test and asked to help make the famous cake.

MECHANICSVILLE – Heritage Green Assisted Living and Memory Care has announced the expansion of its assisted living community and building upgrades in the memory care community. This expansion will include one-bedroom apartments, companion suites and studio apartments. Heritage will expand its capacity to serve seniors in its assisted living community, which will have 20 additional apartments. Its current memory care neighborhood, called Evergreen, will have six new apartments for seniors. Heritage Green was originally built in 1999 as a memory care community. In 2008, renovations took place to offer more assisted living services. “Heritage Green has a proven track record for providing expert care for those
senior adults requiring assistance in everyday living as well as those requiring a secured memory care environment,” said Holly Carson, marketing director. The renovations will include a new
health and wellness center, offering physical, occupational and speech therapies. The community also will include an exam room so a physician can visit patients. The new building will be open-concept, so residents are free to enjoy their independence in their own home. “We are excited about the renovations to our community and are looking forward to welcoming new residents,”
said Christine Smith, executive director of Heritage Green. “With this expansion, Heritage Green will have all the options seniors are looking for, from fun-filled activities, to health and wellness classes and nutritious and delicious meals prepared by our culinary staff. It will be the perfect location to call their home and enjoy a happy and worry-free lifestyle.” The expansion construction, as well as building upgrades, is slated to be complete by late summer 2016. “Our residents and families appreciate the kindness and dedication that each staff member and caregiver shows,” said Carson. “It is our belief that one generation plants the tree, another sits in its shade. We have built an experienced team of staff and caregivers that will continue to offer the expert, loving care that we have always provided for our seniors.” see HERITAGE, pg. 15

My mind flashed back to that afternoon spent with my grandmother in that big old kitchen with the aroma of that whiskey cake permeating the room. Standing there with Emma as we splashed flour in all the wrong places, it suddenly seemed like the holidays, and, somehow, my grandmother was still an important part of the celebration. The cake turned out perfect and didn’t last long around here. I stopped counting how many slices I had due to my limited math skills. My grandmother taught me many things that endure in my beliefs as a man and a father, but she also left me something a little tastier, and much more fattening. And don’t worry, I’m writing the recipe down for Emma, the designated keeper of one of our family’s most valued possessions — Miss Lilly’s Whiskey Cake recipe.

ASHLAND/WESTERN HANOVER | Also serving the communities of Montpelier, Beaverdam, Rockville and Doswell
Council moves forward with Ashland Theater By Meredith Rigsby News Editor ASHLAND — After months of discussion, Ashland Town Council, at its Tuesday, Dec. 1, meeting, approved a draft resolution stating that the council would support the operation of the Ashland Theater by a nonprofit organization by providing financial assistance annually in
future budgets beginning with fiscal years 2016-2017; that Ashland Town Council would retain ownership of the Ashland Theater for at least 10 years and that Ashland Town Council would repay the full amount of the Industrial Revitalization Fund (IRF) grant in the event that the operation of the Ashland Theater by a local nonprofit should fail to meet the requirements of the Virginia Department
of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). In 2014, council submitted an application to the DHCD for a $500,000 IRF grant, proposing a plan that would allow the Ashland Theater to be operated by a for-profit entity, based on a $25,000 Feasibility Study conducted by Waukeshaw Development. After overwhelming citizen
input against the for-profit plan, the Ashland Theater Committee submitted a separate proposal to operate the theater through a nonprofit entity, the Ashland Theater Community Foundation (ATCF), a registered 501(c)(3). At last week’s meeting, Town Manager Charles Hartgrove explained that he and town staff have been working with committee members and its
leadership, as well as with DHCD staff to see if the DHCD would consider allowing the town to keep its originally approved grant funding under its new concept, which shifts the proposal from a private sector partner to a nonprofit partner. Representing the Ashland Theater Committee, Clark Mercer addressed see THEATER, pg. 17

Museum tells Ashland’s story through walking tour By Meredith Rigsby News Editor ASHLAND — The Ashland Museum hosted a Holiday Walking and House Tour on Sunday, Dec. 6, through Ashland’s historic downtown. During the guided tour, attendees walked through different areas of Railroad Avenue and stopped at various historic landmarks, including the Ashland Train Station, the Henry Clay Inn, the Iron Horse Restaurant and Tiny

Tim’s Toys. A guide taught tourists about the history of various buildings along the downtown corridor, about the architectural styles used in some of the structures, and about the fire of 1893 that destroyed an entire block along Railroad Avenue. While learning about the structures along the downtown corridor, it was revealed both Tiny Tim’s Toys and the Iron Horse Restaurant still feature

SHLAND – About 3,000 people gathered along the train tracks Saturday, Dec. 5, in the Town of Ashland’s downtown corridor to experience the first of what will now be an annual event known as “Light Up the Tracks.” Around 5:30 p.m. emcee Hugh Joyce led a countdown and plugged in a milelong display of lights along the railroad tracks that run through town, highlighting the commercial structures in the district and creating a “live postcard” for those travelling through Ashland on CSX and Amtrak trains. In addition to the light display along the train tracks, Randolph-Macon College allowed the town to use an area of land across from Ashland Coffee and Tea for a holiday tree illumination. Accompanying the light display was a group of about 130 volunteer carolers who gathered on the steps of the Henry Clay Inn providing holiday music. The idea for the “Light Up the Tracks” event was thought up months ago by local resident Dan Bartges, who would not have been able to bring his idea to life without the enthusiastic and helpful citizens of Ashland. “It’s just a wonderful creation of an awful lot of people in town,” Bartges said. “I was thinking today, there were

The Town of Ashland started a new holiday tradition Saturday evening, Dec. 5, with “Light Up the Tracks.” This event celebrates the relationship the town has with CSX and Amtrak trains. About 5:30 p.m., a Christmas tree lighting ceremony was held and carolers welcomed the holidays with favorite songs for the season. The town will remain in its “Light Up the Tracks” mode through the new year.
probably close to 300 people in Ashland who stepped forward to help out either as singers, or planners, or doers. It really has been wonderful to see that happen.” Bartges also was able to get executives from both CSX and Amtrak involved in the special holiday event. Amtrak recently shot a portion of its holiday video in Ashland that was to be released Tuesday, Dec. 8, and highlight the town as well as a couple other stations in Amtrak’s system. “It’s so much fun to come through here and really get into the spirit of the season. People will enjoy it because it’s always fun to be coming down the railroad looking out the window just
relaxing and enjoying things, you never know what you’re going to see,” Matthew Hardison, executive vice president of marketing and sales for Amtrak, said. “Now, you’re going to come through Ashland and see this spectacular Christmas scene, I think it’s just going to be a lot of fun.” The “Light Up the Tracks” event is not only highlighting Ashland’s downtown corridor and providing a postcard type holiday scene for CSX and Amtrak riders, it also celebrates the long-standing connection that Ashland has to the railroad. see LIGHTS, pg. 21
council, saying that staff had met with DHCD staff at the end of October to discuss the nonprofit plan and that DHCD staff expressed three main concerns regarding the nonprofit proposal. 1. Whether the Town of Ashland was committed to remaining the owner of the theater for the life of the IRF grant, which is 10 years. 2. Whether the Ashland Theater would remain a community center and theater for the life of the IRF grant and not be turned into condominiums. 3. Whether the Town of Ashland in some way would be willing to commit money to the theater moving forward. “The two biggest things that the state has expressed a desire for is that this plan has the same economic impact and scope as was in the original
proposal plan, Mercer said. Council’s approval of the draft resolution following discussion provides the DHCD with that documentation. “I think what we have is a solid basis to move forward,” council member James Murray said. The DHCD is expected to provide town staff with an answer as to whether it will allow Ashland to use the $500,000 in IRF grant money towards the proposed nonprofit plan by Dec. 3. In other business, Joshua Farrar, the town’s finance director, provided a Compensation Plan Update saying that although updates and modifications have been made over the years, the current system is basically meaningless. “Essentially in 2015 it’s a Frankenstein version of the 1994 plan,” Farrar said. Farrar requested that council approve a proposed plan which would create five pay bands, each providing a mini-
mum, midpoint and maximum salary for positions in each band that are similar but not necessarily comparable. Under this plan, the pay band minimum, along with salaries of each employee within that band, would automatically adjust to the equivalent of the average change of the highly comparable positions in the Richmond region. The one-time cost to the town to change to this type of compensation plan would be approximately $91,500. Ashland Town Council unanimously approved the proposal, allowing for the plan to be placed into the budget document and into the town’s five year plan draft budget. No citizen input was received at the meeting and the consent agenda was approved. The next Ashland Town Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Ashland Town Hall located at 101 Thompson St.

application,” Mercer said. Theater committee members met over the Thanksgiving weekend to provide answers. A line item was added to the nonprofit plan proposal in pro forma, saying the nonprofit will raise $50,000 per year in charitable contributions and showed that it has equity investment in the project by already by having raised $90,000 to put toward a $200,000 total to provide seed capital for the life of the IRF grant. The organization has $40,000 from pop-up events held at the theater over the past year and $50,000 in donations. Mercer also said the nonprofit operating the Ashland Theater would sell seats and sidewalk stars to bring in equity and that there are already other organizations “waiting in the wings” to support the organization. The DHCD also wanted to see documentation that the town supports the nonprofit

OKMS girls’ tennis team goes undefeated this season Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com M E C HA N IC S V I L L E — The Hanover-Henrico middle school girls’ tennis season ended Oct. 29, with Oak Knoll Middle School in Mechanicsville taking the district champion title. The team completed an undefeated season with 10 wins overall. Kaylee Moore, sixth grade, Alexandra Meyers, eighth grade, and Elizabeth Row, eighth grade, each hold individual records for an undefeated season. Oak Knoll, the number one team in Hanover County, played Moody Middle School, the number one team of Central Henrico, in the final match of the post-season and defeated Moody, 6-3. Oak Knoll’s singles players —
Raine Weis, Nina Violi, Kaylee Moore and Alexandra Meyers — each defeated their opponents early on, and Moody’s numbers two, three and four doubles teams had each earned wins for their team. As the OKMS Knights led 4-3, each team knew it could go either way. Oak Knoll’s number five doubles team was tied 5-5 and their number one doubles team was down 1-5. Oak Knoll’s number five doubles team, Sidney Chesley and Danielle Woolard, defeated Moody, 7-5; and soon after, their number one doubles team, Elizabeth Row and Kylie Williams, made an incredible comeback from 1-5 to defeat Moody, 7-5. Oak Knoll’s team captains, eighth graders Alexandra Meyers and Elizabeth Row, led the team as not only skilled players, but also and more
importantly, as team players. Oak Knoll tennis coach Amber Miller, said, “This team’s record is impressive, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s not really why these girls had a great season. I received an email the day after the season ended from a parent stating ‘My daughter has found a new passion and LOVES tennis. She woke up this morning crying because the season was over. She truly made some wonderful friends.’ That explains our team’s success perfectly to me. The most successful teams whether as a family, business, or a sports team, are the ones that work together.” “We were not just a group of people playing tennis, we were a team. I was very lucky to have such great teammates that I knew I could count on. Our see OKMS, pg. 24

Heritage Green Assisted Living community grows Local Wreaths Across America Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE–Heritage Green Assisted Living and Memory Care has announced the expansion of its assisted living community and building upgrades in the memory care community. “Heritage Green has a proven track record for providing expert care for those senior adults requiring assistance in everyday living as well as those requiring a secured memory care environment,” said Holly Carson, marketing director. The renovations will include a new health and wellness center, offering physical, occupational and speech therapies. The community also will include an exam room so a physician can visit patients. The new building will be openconcept, so residents are free to enjoy their independence in

It will be the perfect location to call their home and enjoy a happy and worry-free lifestyle.” The expansion construction, as well as building upgrades, is slated to be complete by late summer 2016. Heritage Green is managed by Heritage Senior Living, located in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Heritage operates senior living communities in the Mid-Atlantic region. Heritage Green offers assisted living and memory care services to seniors. Located at 7080 Brooks Farm Rd. in Mechanicsville, Heritage Green offers residents a retirement community on an affordable month-to-month lease with no buy-in fees. Resident services include chefprepared meals, housekeeping, social events and transportation. While Hanover County has no direct control over VDOT projects, Peterson suggests that citizens follow McNabb’s advice and make their concerns known directly to VDOT. Peterson said, “Many voices will hopefully speed up correction efforts on the part of VDOT’s contractors.”

Carlson was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to four years’ incarceration. Meg Menzies was 34. Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor, who paraphrased words she had recently heard from a pastor, said last week that — while the loved ones of victims were gathered to mourn losses — they must also consider themselves a recipient of a gift. “A gift that God has given us, to know that we had that loved one in our lives. Whether it be three years or 30 years, it was a gift that God gave,” Taylor said.

MECHANICSVILLE— Internationally acclaimed Christian recording artists Wayne and Elizabeth Goodine will hold a choir clinic on Saturday, Dec. 12, and a Christmas performance at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at Life Church at 8378 Atlee Rd. in Mechanicsville. The singing and songwriting duo will teach and perform songs fit for a Virginia Christmas holiday. The Goodines live in the Jackson, Mississippi, area where they have served as worship pastors. Throughout their ministry, he has served as chairman of the Music Department at various Christian colleges where she has also been on the faculty.
In addition, their unique calling to write, compose, and direct Christian music has led them throughout most of the 50 states, Canada, Japan and a ministry tour in November to West Africa (Nigeria and Togo). “In a time where most of our country is getting bogged down with the drama of a fast approaching presidential election, there’s nothing that can warm people’s hearts more than beautiful, spirit inspired Christmas music. We are blessed to have such pillars from the Christian worship scene make their way to Mechanicsville, Virginia,” said Robin Thompson, director of Music Ministry at Life Church. The choir clinic and presentation will allow a focused opportunity for the singers and
musicians of Life Church to spend time receiving vocal and instrumental training from leading figures in the Christian music industry. The clinic will culminate in a performance Sunday morning, Dec. 13, before hundreds of congregants and guests from Hanover County and Metro Richmond. Although artists such as The Gaither Vocal Band, Selah and The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir have recorded their songs, Wayne and Elizabeth Goodine said they still love working with local churches. In September, the Goodines visited Life Church and said, “Having the opportunity to worship at Life Church was an amazing experience for both see LIFE, pg. 30

Freshmen set records in Yellow Jacket meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – The field was bigger and better, but Randolph-Macon, helped by a pair of freshmen who broke program records, held its own at its Yellow Jacket Invitational at Collegiate School Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday. Nick Burton, a freshman distance swimmer, was in a record-breaking mood both days. On Friday, he outpaced a 46-swimmer field in the men’s 500-yard freestyle. His time of 4:40.16 broke the program record of 4:43.71 set by Hunter Morris in 2012. He then out-swam 27 other swimmers Saturday in the men’s 1,650 freestyle Saturday, finishing in 16:25.98, which was a program record, meet record and an Old Dominion Athletic Conference record. Kata Kylliainen finished second in women’s 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:47.23 – breaking the program record of 18:13.97 set by Rebecca Stevenson in 2013. “We had a lot of really good swims that we can be happy with,” said Randolph-Macon head swimming coach Brent Kintzer. Washington and Lee swept the men’s and women’s competitions in dominant fashion. The Generals’ men out scored second-place Washington College

Generals head coach Kami Gardner. “On both the men’s and women’s side, we’re really deep in almost every single event.” Gardner said the Generals have more than numbers, though. “Our kids are racers. They’re gamers,” Gardner said. “They like to get up and they like to
compete. … Even if they’re tired or sore or whatever, they’re going to get up and give their best. I think that’s indicative of our team right now.” The Randolph-Macon men came in fifth with 413 points and the women were seventh with 302. The men dropped a few spots from their team finish last year.
“Last year [our men] were second. This year, we graduated some very top-end talent that made this a little bit harder, but we had a lot of our guys respond and swim fast,” Kintzer said. “Our women’s team is stepping up and doing better than they did the year before.” Washington and Lee’s men were led by Noah Schammel,
who won in both the 100 and 200 butterfly and who was part of the Generals’ winning 200 medley relay team – with Colin McKinnon, Tommy Thetford and Andrew Botelho. Thetford also won the 100 freestyle. Emily Rollo led the Generals’ women with first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke. She was also part of Washington and Lee’s three winning relay teams: with Ellie Chancey, Jordan Watson and Elisabeth Holmes in the 400 freestyle relay; with Chancey, Cassidy Fuller and senior Sarah Schaffer in the 200 freestyle relay; and with Watson, Fuller and Holmes in the 800 freestyle relay. Chancey also claimed firstplace finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Fuller also finished first in the 100 butterfly. Randolph-Macon had several other winners. Robert Redenz won the 100 breaststroke in 58.62, another school and meet record. Mohamed Saleh finished first in the 100 backstroke. A Yellow Jacket team of Burton, Redenz, Ivan Fadeyev and Daniel Whitehead finished first in the 800 freestyle relay. Kintzer said the Yellow Jackets did well despite a disadvantage in numbers. “We only had 13 guys on our side,” Kintzer said. “On the see RECORDS, pg. 34

game. “We have a great ball handler in Wallace Washington,” Spelsberg said. “The majority of our offenses you can play against any type of defense. As long as you practice that and know where you’re supposed to be, you can be effective. And it doesn’t hurt to have a great shooter like Nick Parks who can stretch the defense out.” Washington, normally the two-guard, directed the show from the point in place of Gregory Parham, who is nurs-
ing injuries to his right wrist and thumb. “We watched film,” said Washington, a 5-10 junior, “and we wanted to push the tempo because we saw that they got back slow. We’re a running team, so we knew that if we could push the ball in transition, we’d get easy buckets.” Two spurts were the Hawks’ undoing. The Chiefs opened the second period with a 13-2 surge on the strength of two 3-pointers by Parks and one by
Peterson. Then, at the beginning of the third, they used two more strikes from behind the arc (by Parks and Trejvon McFail) to open a 17-point lead from which the Hawks could not recover. “It means a lot to get a good start to the season,” Parks said. “We have some tough games coming up. This builds up our confidence.” Weldon Bradshaw can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

MECHANICSVILLE – Early season jitters? Butterflies? Ragged play? No way. Not for Monacan in its 78-66 victory at Hanover on Friday night in what projected to be a closely contested matchup between two of the top boys basketball teams from Conference 20. “We shot the ball well, we passed the ball well as a team, we came out with a lot of energy, and we ran our stuff that we’ve been practicing,” Monacan coach R.J. Spelsberg said. “This is a great group of guys. They like each other. They like to share the ball and play for each other.” Nick Parks (23 points), Darian Peterson (15) and Wallace Washington (15) were the Chiefs’ top scorers. Parks, a 6-2 senior guard, opened the scoring with a dunk, drained four long 3-pointers and finished it by calmly sinking a pair of free throws. “My teammates were setting great screens and kicking it out,” Parks said. “When we drove, they were collapsing and trying to block shots, so we knew the kick-out would be there for me or any other guy. From the tipoff, we just came out faster than them. They were a step slower, and we picked up the tempo and never let it go down.” Monacan (2-0) led 18-13 after the first quarter, then outscored Hanover 37-25 over the next two periods to carry a comfortable advantage — and considerable momentum — into the fourth. Try as they might, little the Hawks (2-1) threw at the Chiefs defensively — man-to-man, full-court pressure, half-court traps — slowed their running

Fourth-period swoon proves costly to Raiders By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee led after the first three quarters of its game with visiting Mills Godwin Friday night. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they couldn’t hold on to that lead in the final eight minutes. The Eagles, taking advantage of deadly shooting by guard Sara Puglisi, outscored Atlee 134 in the fourth quarter to steal away with a 32-29 victory over their hosts. Offensive fouls cost the Raiders dearly, giving Mills Godwin extra chances to catch up. In a critical stretch that began with Atlee ahead 27-21, Puglisi took advantage, nailing back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game. “I just figured that, like, somebody had to step up,” Puglisi said. “But we have a great team. We have some really good seniors that lead the team – Meaghan Sherman and Lexi Barshinger. Our whole team was trying to rally back. We had some really good defensive stops from our post. I just had the shots. I had some good looks from my post.” Puglisi said she took advantage of tunnel vision on the part of the Atlee defense. “When the other guards, like, passed it out – because [the Raiders] were really focused on just trying to shut us down in one spot – having them do that and drawing all the attention [to the baselines], I was left wide open,” Puglisi said. When she took the shots, the junior said she was perfectly calm. “Our coach, [Jim] Bettis, he trains us each and every day to go in and practice like it’s your game,” Puglisi said. “We play really competitive against each other. We are put in these situa-
34
tions for these reasons.” Atlee took a 17-10 lead at halftime, only slightly yielding any advantage to Mills Godwin in the third period, which ended with the Raiders still ahead 2516. Puglisi’s 10 fourth-quarter points was more than twice what Atlee managed to net in the final quarter. Atlee head coach Michael Rawlings said both teams were equally guilty of offensive fouls. “I think they called offensive fouls both ways,” Rawlings said. “There was a lot of, I would say, illegal picks, illegal screens, what have you. … It was a pretty physical game. The screens, illegal screens, that I saw – I think they even had more than we did.” Rawlings did not think the offensive fouls put the Raiders at any disadvantage. Instead, he said lack of offense was their primary problem. “I just think we didn’t perform today,” Rawlings said. “We finished with 29 points, and I have a player that averages 20. That just says a lot right there.” The Raiders leading scorer – Ashley Weaver – averaged 19.9 points per game last season. She scored just 14 points against the Eagles Friday night. The loss to Mills Godwin was Atlee’s second loss of their season. “We’re off to a slow start,” Rawlings said. “We’re struggling right now to find our offense. I have seven, eight, maybe nine kids who can score the ball. I think when we find ourselves, and we start to score the ball, it’ll be a different team on the floor. Rawlings said they are missing the leadership provided by Jamari Blackwell, who graduated. “We lost our leader last year,” Rawlings said. “Somebody needs to step up and take the lead. It’ll happen – sooner than later, I hope.”

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Local wrestlers got busy pounding the mat last week, with all four county teams working on building upon the successes of their past. While many of the faces are the same – most of the faces, in fact – county teams face a new postseason landscape with Atlee moving from Conference 11 to Conference 16 to leave Lee-Davis as the sole county team left in Conference 11. Hanover loses two opponents – Glen Allen and J.R. Tucker to Conference 11, while getting a strong competitor in Powhatan in Conference 20. Atlee’s move to Conference 16 isn’t the only change affecting Patrick Henry, as both will have to contend with Patrick HenryRoanoke, a former Group 6A team, in their league. While none of the teams can control the neighborhood they wrestle in, they can control how hard they work, and all four teams plan to work hard and – they hope – continue having an impact at the state tournament level.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, concern yourself with substantive actions and not empty promises. This will make it easier for you to make decisions about pressing issues.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, make the most of an opportunity to move forward with your goals. You have plenty of energy, and your mind is focused. Hang around with like-minded individuals as well.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Act now, Virgo, or you might get left behind. You can’t sit around and wait for things to unfold. Sometimes you have to take charge, and this is one of those times.
SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Try not to spread yourself too thin, Sagittarius. If you do, you will not be able to put your best foot forward. If you feel yourself getting stressed, step back.
CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, now is a great time to take a step back and exhale. Avoid taking on any additional responsibilities. Instead, take some time to recharge. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, let friends know how much they mean to you because you might not say it often enough. Others will appreciate your candor and generosity. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you tend to hold your feelings inside and that can be unhealthy. Share your feelings more often so negative energy will not build.
