STOPS AT EVERY HOME IN TOWN
Pole Green Road’s forecast: busy By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER – The Hanover County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a request to rezone 39 acres located off Pole Green Road from agricultural to RS, a designation that allows single-family homes. The developers plan to locate 103 homes on the proposed subdivision named Bishop’s Park with a density of 2.6 units per acre. Land use plans allow up to four units per acre in the designated zoning,
and open space is required. The current plan allows seven acres to be reserved for open space, and the development will feature walking trails, sidewalks and street lighting along Pole Green Road. MALONEY Planning director David Maloney said a traffic
study indicated the new subdivision would not affect Pole Green’s current rating. During peak hours, the road rates a D on the Virginia Department of Transportation grading scale, the least acceptable grade for Hanover roads. Maloney said the traffic problem on Pole Green Road was the center of discussions when planners met with the community in a required meeting, but only one citizen showed up at a public hearing held last week. Robert Alexander, the owner of the
adjacent farm, said the land in question once belonged to his grandfather, and he has no objection to its development, excepting a hint of sentimental remorse seeing the land developed. But, he did express concern over the current traffic conditions on Pole Green Road. Alexander not only owns property on the heavily traveled corridor, he lives on the thoroughfare near Verdi Lane. “During rush hour, I can’t get out of my driveway, Alexander said.

Referring to the impact of the proposed development, Alexander said, “It’s got to affect the road.” Several supervisors also voiced concern over nightmarish traffic on Pole Green Road. Canova Peterson, Mechanicsville District, said he considered voting against the project for that very reason, but decided to support it after surveying the specific stretch of road being considered. “This particular development is situated on three lanes … and that eased some of my concerns,” Peterson said. Scott Wyatt, Cold Harbor District, also askrated road could not affect the rating. He pointed to studies that predict the road could gain an “E” rating by 2019. Improvements to Pole Green Road are on the county’s long-range drawing board, but real improvements in the foreseeable future seem remote. “Unless we have millions of dollars and can immediately enact condemnation and eminent domain for everybody from Rural Point (Road) all the way down to (Interstate) 295, I don’t know that Pole Green will ever be widened,” Henry District supervisor Sean Davis said as he moved for approval. Davis pointed out that this development is on the low end of the allowed density and contains almost 20 percent open space and sidewalks. He also pointed out that the $600,000 in transportation proffers offered by the developer is more than three times the required levy. County administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. said there is a plan to improve Pole Green Road, but not in the immediate future. “Pole Green (Road) is in our traffic plans for the 20year horizon,” Harris said. “We have made application to the state, the TPO (Transportation Planning Organization) and others, but it is not within the time frame that Mr. Alexander or any of us would like. The

Notifying residents of foreclosure actions By Public Notice Research Center for The Mechanicsville Local Almost all states require significant notice to the public before courts or foreclosure trustees can take the extreme action of kicking people out of their homes. The poignant images of the millions of people who lost their homes as a result of fraudulent practices of Great Recession are vivid today. Although foreclosures have slowed since the peak of 2.8 million in 2010, there were still more than a million foreclosure filings in 2015, according to RealtyTrac. http://www.realtytrac.com/news/ foreclosure-trends/realtytrac-2015year-end-u-s-foreclosure-marketreport/ In Virginia, foreclosures may occur through power of sale clauses agreed to by borrowers when a loan is executed (often without providing the borrowers a choice) or by court action. Lenders may require a very short period of notification. Virginia law guarantees a scant three days of public notice when lenders insist upon a short notice period, and it can allow a lender to seize a prop-

erty in only a few months. Virginia’s foreclosure period is one of the shortest in the nation. Some states permit up to 1,000 days to give residents the maximum opportunity to keep their homes. The short period means that effective and broadest possible notification to the general public is essential to provide borrowers (and innocent renters) a fair chance to save their homes or move before they are kicked out. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission have ordered significant changes in mortgage underwriting practices of past to help protect the public. But even when all goes well, many are still at risk of losing their homes when they lose jobs, suffer health setbacks or face rising interest rates that they did not expect. Public notice of foreclosures is an important tool for communities to protect residents and their homes. zIt gives residents time to assemble resources to redeem the property before they are removed; see FORECLOSURE, pg. 8 `

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When news first broke earlier last week of an impending monster snowstorm headed for Virginia, I greeted the news with my usual dose of cynicism. Even though the forecast predicted a 100 percent chance of significant snowfall, I figured the estimates were overstating what could happen. Besides, forecasts that are issued days before an actual weather event are notoriously faulty. As the week progressed, and forecasters stuck to their guns regarding the storm, I decided to stock up on supplies. It’s probably the first time I’ve taken the warnings so seriously.
I suppose it’s a bit of old age that makes me think more of preparation for events like power outages. It’s the same motivator that requires me to carry a Kleenex in my pocket everywhere I go. But, I digress. In numerous trips to the store, I found myself among the masses fighting for bread and milk, searching for elusive ingredients to make vegetable soup and listening to conversations that all centered on one thing: the big storm. Deep down, I was still skeptical. And I wasn’t alone. While waiting in line on one of my treks to the store for more supplies, I encountered a lady whose thoughts mirrored mine exactly.
“It doesn’t snow around here like it used to when we were kids,” she said. “I can remember storms when we couldn’t get out of our front door.” I completely agreed as my mind wandered back to weeks off from school and roads that seemed impassable for days. “You’re right,” I said. “we haven’t had snow like that in decades.” As the storm began on Friday, I silently snickered to myself as the light snow turned to rain and then ice and then quit with inches on the ground. I was even a little disappointed when I awoke Saturday to local forecasts of an additional inch or two of accumulation expected during the see SNOW, pg. 8 `

Is history repeating in Hanover County? It only had been a few years ago that Hanover County lowered the property assessments due to the collapse of the government-sponsored Ponzi scheme owned, operated and profited by real estate mongrels, mortgage companies, financial institutions and local governments. How can you participate in a taxpayer rip-off of that magnitude, which put some local residents into bankruptcy, admit your mistake by giving the over assessments back and then start it all over again? How can you forget so fast? Again, what does the sale price of someone else’s property have to do with the neighbor’s property value? Nothing!! Nothing!! Nothing!! Governments and real estate companies should not try to predict the future by raising the value of your house before it sells. Hanover County failed by using bogus information and trying to predict that everybody’s house was worth up to twice the value. Now they are at it again. Why can’t they learn from past mistakes? The Virginia Law they quote requiring them to assess using the “Realtor told me” method is a man-made law that can be changed anytime. The law is not one of the Ten Commandments, but, if it were, I assume it would be an extension of Commandment #8 and God would have also said, “And furthermore, gov-
ernments shall not unnecessarily increase their own wealth by taking advantage of the poor souls who feed them.” Here are a couple things that make me wonder why they would even consider an increase to our taxes. 1) The new Hanover County Board of Supervisors (2012) right off squashed the proffers as they considered them as unfair, unpopular, unnecessary and unspendable. As years of proffer money could not be spent I assume it is lying around somewhere? 2) The new board of supervisors (2012) found that the county budget approved by the 2009 board of supervisors was $30 million a year over funded/padded and the new board knocked $30 million a year out of the new budget. That’s $30 million a year not wasted and should be in the see LETTERS, pg. 8 `

When the snow finally stopped late that night, I thought of venturing out to get some photos of the brilliant snowscape. I quickly discovered the snow had covered half of my front door, trapping me inside for a few more hours. I glanced out the window and noted that the blanketing looked like what me and that lady in the checkout line would
describe as an old-fashioned snow. In the future, I’ll have a far more healthy respect for weathermen and women, and I might even heed their calls when the next monster storm hits. For now, it’s another day of mindless activity and searching for novel methods of entertainent. But, things could be
worse, but not by much. I’m not sure when schools will reopen and life returns to normal around here, but I’ll approach the rest of the winter with less skepticism when dealing with weather forecasts. On the bright side, I’ve still got enough food for a month and my house is cozy and warm, and … I still have a Kleenex in my pocket.

When VDOT assures us the existing roads can handle the proposed new development they sound more and more uncertain. Anybody that drives on our roads is well aware that VDOT could spend a billion dollars on our roads and not solve all the problems. VDOT is not going to spend a billion dollars on our roads. There is little doubt that money earmarked for projects in other parts of the county is going to be diverted to solve
traffic problems near these new developments. When VDOT does a traffic study and says the roads will handle the traffic increase they seem embarrassed. There is little doubt development will cause traffic problems. Money to solve these problems will not be there unless other parts of the county are shortchanged. Two-year-old Levi Miles was all smiles when Amanda Miles took his photo out in the snow. Garrett and Scarlett took a break from playing in the snow for this photo submitted by Celesta Caveness.

Waukeshaw Development’s proposal sought to utilize the IRF grant in conjunction with $500,000 of the town’s own money to turn the Ashland Theater into a for-profit, multi-use entertainment venue with a restaurant located on the adjacent property. application process.” Since that time, town staff has been working with the DHCD “hand and glove” to figure out how the nonprofit plan could better address some of the concerns laid out by the DHCD, Town Manager Charles Hartgrove said. In its letter to the town, the DHCD listed the items that it feels “vary significantly
from the original application” and “do not meet the funding threshold.” These include: A reduced scope, with regard to the extent of the renovations within the theater building, and because the nonprofit plan does not include the purchase and renovation of the adjacent property. An outcome that will create fewer and lowerwage jobs due to reliance on volunteers and donated
time. A lower increased revenue via taxes by using the 501(c)(3) foundation, which will result in a net budget loss for the project to the town’s finances. A lack of economic impact compared to the forprofit plan, by utilizing the theater as a community space rather than a tourist destination. Financial viability due to unrealistically reduced expenses resulting in the the-

Hartgrove and Nora Amos, director of planning and community development, met with DHCD staff on Tuesday, Jan. 5, to discuss the concerns expressed in the letter and received further instruction, according to Hartgrove. Amos and Hartgrove have since met with the nonprofit foundation and they are working specifically on the proposed business and operations plan to try and formulate a response to the letter and instructions received. “As we transition from a potential private sector partner to a potential nonprofit entity that changed the dynamics of our grant application and the awarding of that grant,” Hartgrove said. … “Right now we are very hopeful that we can find the middle path that allows us to continue to work with DHCD and utilize the grant funding if we can.”

Frank and Carolyn Leimberger celebrated 50 years of marriage on January 29, 2016. They met 51 years ago when Frank had his tonsils removed at the hospital where Carolyn was a nurse. Their wedding day was the Blizzard of 1966. Many of the invited guests that were able to weather the storm had to be pulled out by a church member’s tractor. The Leimbergers remember the helped provided by Stanley Baldwin, who is now deceased. The Rev. George Robinson, also now deceased, the founder of the Hanover Friends Church, officiated for the wedding. He also was Carolyn’s brother-in-law. Frank and Carolyn were the first couple to be married in the newly founded church. The couple has two sons, Daniel (wife Chris) and Mark (wife Alyssa). They have four grandchildren, Ben, Ellie, Cash and Cruz. The Leimbergers said their recent trip to the Holy Land is among the many highlights of their marriage. They said they wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Lord for His mercy and grace over the last 50 years. The photo at left is their wedding day and, above, they are shown in Israel.

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Q. Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Cecily, 428476, is a (estimated) 3-year-old female domestic short-haired feline. She has had her first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Cecily came to the shelter at the beginning of January. She has turned out to be a very sweet and gentle cat. She seems to do well around other cats and is very well litter trained. Cecily will make a nice family companion. Jake, 426953, is a (estimated) 4-year-old male canine hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Jake arrived at the shelter as a stray just before Christmas. He has a friendly personality. Jake was more than likely an outdoor dog before so he loves to run and has playful energy. He interacts well with other dogs and is not timid around new people. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://hanovercounty.gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.

Montpelier man killed in Colonial Heights crash Staff Report news@mechlocal.com COLONIAL HEIGHTS — A 21-year-old Montpelier man died in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday on Interstate 95 in Colonial Heights. According to Sgt. Stephan Vick of the Virginia State Police, Kirk R. Carico was the driver and sole occupant of a 2007 Chevrolet Impala that ran off the road and struck a tree on the northbound side of the interstate, just north of the
Temple Avenue exit. The fatality occurred around 4:55 a.m., Vick added. Vick said Carico, who died at the scene, was not wearing a seatbelt and speed is being considered as a factor in the crash.

HANOVER — All dogs and cats (including so-called “barn cats”) are required by law to be vaccinated for rabies at four months of age. For dogs, you also must have tags and a valid license proving the vaccination. Hanover Animal Control makes it easy for people to get their pets vaccinated by holding rabies vaccination clinics in the fall and winter. Vaccines will be administered at a cost of $7 per dog or cat. A clinic will be held: Saturday, Feb. 6, at the East Hanover Rescue Squad from 10 a.m. to

The vaccination is good for up to three years unless the pet has never had a rabies vaccination before, in which case it is good for one year. L-D Hall of Fame welcomes Class of 2016 By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The overarching themes of the third class of the Lee-Davis High School Athletic Hall of Fame are perseverance and taking advantage of opportunities. Nathan Boettcher couldn’t get cleared to play football, so he founded the Lee-Davis cross country program and ran all the way to Virginia Tech. Antoine Lee, a backup running back pondering a position switch, stepped in for a teammate and earned an all-state spot. And Henry Keeton took every opportunity available to him to become the first star athlete when the school was new. Sometimes those opportunities to be the best came off the field, too. In high school, Kim Fields set records on the track and earned honors from her classmates before becoming an executive with the NFL. The late Gary Edwards put his football career on hold to serve his country in Vietnam. And Henry Keeton followed in the footsteps of the coaches who shaped his own athletic career by spending three decades as an educator and coach. These are the inductees of the class of 2016.

The Lee-Davis Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 was honored at halftime of the Confederates’ boys basketball game against Patrick Henry Friday. Lee-Davis, but couldn’t pass a physical due to lingering effects from a car accident. Football coach Buddy Gregory wanted the enthusiastic Boettcher to find a sport, so he suggested cross country. There was only one problem – Lee-Davis didn’t have a cross country team. So Boettcher recruited some friends and they set out carving out the school’s Nathan Boettcher course and forming the team. Boettcher (class of 1969) had “The only thing I had designs on playing football for run was in the eighth grade,”
Boettcher said. “I had run the half mile and the mile. I didn’t really know much about cross country. They said we needed to make a pass through the woods and the fields and the streams and make it two miles, so that’s what we did. “Nobody really knew anything about the sport at the time. It was a new sport. So we went out and ran and had fun.” Boettcher also won – a lot. He reeled off three state cross country championships,
in 2014. While football was his main sport at Lee-Davis, as well as the sport that he continued at Ferrum Junior College and the University of Richmond, he also earned letters in track and field and basketball. Edwards played fullback and linebacker at Lee-Davis, leading the state in touchdowns and scoring as a senior in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969 and picked up right where he left Gary Edwards Edwards (class of 1966) died off, earning All-America honors
in addition to two 2-mile state championships in indoor track and one in outdoor track. He won so much he earned a spot on the team at Virginia Tech, where he competed in three NCAA championships and set school records in the 3-mile, 6mile and cross-country course runs. “It took me to places I’d never dreamed I’d go,” he said.

Hawks, Raiders split basketball doubleheader By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The free throws started falling at the right time, and in just the right amount, for Jason Wade and the Hanover boys basketball team on Friday night. Wade, who missed his first five shots from the stripe and eight of his first 10, sank a big pair of free throws after dishing out two crucial assists. Alan Dabney racked up 34 points and 15 rebounds as the Hawks won 82-75 at Atlee to sweep the season series with their Route 301 rivals. “It was a gutsy performance,” Hanover coach Darren Thornton said. “I told him this was the last time he was going to play Atlee at Atlee, and that kind of lit a fire in him. He had a great game tonight.” Hanover’s six-point lead after three quarters matched the biggest lead of the game to that point, and while the Hawks opened up the fourth period on a 6-3 run, the breathing room didn’t last. Andrew Foster buried a 3-pointer coming out of a timeout to touch off a 10-2 run that pulled Atlee (7-9) within one with four minutes remaining and led Thornton to call a

timeout of his own. The stoppage, like Atlee’s before it, worked perfectly as Nick Zona hit a 3-pointer of his own to push the lead to four points. The Raiders had one more run left, cutting their deficit to two on another Foster 3-pointer at the two-minute mark, but Wade found Dabney and Ryan Payne for inside baskets on back-to-back possessions. He then buried his two free throws with 25 seconds remaining, then put the capper on the game by stealing the ball from Robert Jenkins Jr. at midcourt and ending matters with an emphatic dunk. “I had to put the exclamation point on it because the crowd was talking,” Wade said. “It was an intense game, so I figured that would be a good way to end it.” Wade had 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals and Zona chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds, but the big man of the evening was Dabney, who put his 6-foot-5 frame to good use against a small Atlee team that got smaller when Andrew Dages and Jack Fahed got into foul trouble early on. She’s the NFL’s chief strategy officer of football operations, and it’s easy to see why – her academic credentials are impeccable. She graduated fifth in her class at Lee-Davis, then earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Virginia’s challenging engineering school. ing for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. But it still means a lot to her to receive an honor from the place where it all began. “My high school years really laid the foundation to a lot of things I’ve been able to do post-high school, whether in college or professionally since then,” Fields said. “The lessons I learned then, whether it was discipline, integrity, have been a huge help.” At Lee-Davis, her exploits on the track were just as mindboggling. She broke six records in track and field during her
high school career, dusting the competition in the 100meter high hurdles, 55-meter high hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump. She was also captain of the cheerleading squad as a senior, a natural progression from a childhood filled with gymnastics, ballet and baton twirling. But what stood out the most was her speed, which carried her to four Capital District championships and an all-state nod. She credits her former coach, Steve Ikenberry, for helping her unlock her athletic potential,
and it was Ikenberry who represented her at the induction ceremony. “In gym class, I would always beat a lot of people in those physical fitness tests,” she said. “In middle school, they asked if I’d ever thought about running track, and I said, ‘No, not really.’ I started running my eighth grade year and never stopped.” Courtesy of the Lee-Davis Henry Keeton, Athletic Hall of Fame Committee Henry Keeton (class of 1962) Kim Fields clears a hurdle

was the first true star athlete at Lee-Davis. Part of the first class to go through all four years of high school at the then-new school, he was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball and a three-year letterman in track and field, and the team MVP in all four sports by the time he graduated. That busy schedule led to a few conflicts. Keeton said he had to put a baseball game on hold to get to the track and run in an event. Afterwards, he ran back, jumped the fence and took his spot in center field, and the game resumed. Keeton earned all-district honors in all four sports his final three years of school and

He scored all the school’s points in the state track meet his senior year before moving on to Ferrum Junior College, where he played football and basketball and ran track. Keeton stayed in sports after leaving Ferrum, spending 30 years as a coach and educator. He didn’t have a whole lot of influence to draw upon from his time at Lee-Davis, where he played for different coaches every year at the fledgling school. “I never played for the same football coach two years in a row,” he said. “Hardly ever the basketball coach, hardly ever the baseball coach. The Patriots trailed until the 12 second mark, when Holman again stepped up and sank one of two foul shots to give the Patriots the edge. But an illadvised foul with three seconds left gave the Confederates new life as center Sam Tanner made one of the pair to tie the score again. Just when it looked like the teams would going for another overtime, a Lee-Davis foul on the inbound pass sent Patriot forward Ryan King to the foul line. The home crowd was doing everything possible to distract him, but King sent both foul shots through the net, killing any hopes of a Lee-Davis victory. MECHANICSVILLE – On a night where Lee-Davis was honoring its athletic heroes from years past, the Confederates were also hosting their longtime rival, Patrick Henry, in a boys and girls basketball doubleheader. In both games, the contending teams both had chances to win. In both games, LeeDavis led at halftime. But in both games, the Patriots made the adjustments needed to claim victory: 39-31 in the girls opener and 49-47 in the boys nightcap. In the girls game, the Confederates came out strong, with freshman forward Codie Heilig making the first of her two 3-pointers. Moments later, sophomore guard Whitney Hopson made a nice jump shot to give Lee-Davis the lead, which they would hold until late in the third quarter.
Cobb credited his whole team for the victory, but singled out junior forward Christa Graf ’s 24 rebounds and 11 points on the night as instrumental. In the boys’ game, it initially looked as if the Confederates would avenge the girls’ loss. Senior guard Irving Jones’ first 3-pointer gave Lee-Davis the early lead, just as Heilig’s had done in the girls game. But the scoring went back-and-forth during the first two periods, which featured two ties and four lead changes. The Confederates were clinging to a slim lead in the fourth quarter, helped along by Jamal Jenkins’ accurate shooting from the floor. But with 32 seconds left in regulation, Patrick Henry’s Marcus Holman nailed a jump shot to tie the game and send it into overtime. During the extra frame, LeeDavis nabbed the opening tip and jumped out in front with a

Taylor, Yellow Jackets drub Virginia Wesleyan By Brad Bess Richmond Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – Michael Taylor is one of seven players who was on the RandolphMacon roster last year, when Virginia Wesleyan ended the Yellow Jackets’ season at Crenshaw Gym in the NCAA Division III Elite 8. He hadn’t forgot about that entering Wednesday’s game against the Marlins, also at Crenshaw in Ashland. Taylor went on to score a career-high 24 points, Daniel Noe added 19 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs, and the Yellow Jackets defeated the Marlins 88-59. Montese Adams added a career-high 12 points for Randolph-Macon, which snapped Virginia Wesleyan’s four-game winning streak. The Yellow Jackets were playing their first game in seven days. when Hanover (10-8) missed 18 free throws, he made all but one of his and came up big in the post time and time again. “To beat a bigger, stronger team, you’ve got to play smarter,” Atlee coach Philip Reynolds said. “We had stretches where we did not play good offensive basketball. We played tough on defense the whole game, and hard, but offensively we really rushed things and that was the difference in the game.” The Raiders hung around largely on the strength of their long-range shooting – Leo Reynolds came off the bench to bury five 3-pointers, while Jenkins added three. Those two scored a team-high 17 points each, while Jenkins led Atlee

But the Raiders had no answer for Dabney, who had 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Hawks hang on. “There’s no need to shoot 3s when you can push the ball inside,” he said. Girls: Atlee 53, Hanover 21 A leaky roof and melting snow meant that it was briefly raining in the Atlee gym before the Raiders’ girls matched up with Hanover on Friday. It rained 3-pointers for a short while after that, but when the dust settled, Atlee asserted itself in a 53-21 victory. foot-5 junior. Taylor was the key to an efficient Yellow Jackets offense that overcame a Wesleyan defense that was allowing just 69.7 points per game entering Wednesday. Taylor hit 7 of 11 shots from the field, including a 3-pointer, and went 9 of 10 from the foul line to lead a Randolph-Macon offense that never seemed to take a bad shot. He said his shots came in the rhythm and flow of the offense. “My teammates got me open, then I was able to convert from there,” he said. He went 5 of 7 from the field in the first half and scored 11 points before the hosts took a 38-32 lead into halftime. Randolph-Macon shot 63 percent as team in the half. The Marlins shot 54.2 percent. At the start of the second half, the efficiency of the Yellow Jackets’ offense continued while their defensive intensity
increased. They started the half on an 18-4 burst to take a 20-point lead and never looked back. Randolph-Macon made shots at a 55.2 percent clip after halftime while holding Virginia Wesleyan to 29 percent. It finished the game at 58.9 percent and made 8 of 18 attempts from 3-point range, but the second-half defense provided the separation. The Marlins didn’t score their first second-half basket until more than 4§ minutes into the period. “First-half defense wasn’t great,” first-year RandolphMacon coach Josh Merkel said. “We weren’t super happy with it. We had given up nine layups, we were letting number 33, Poe, get to the rim. “We just challenged them again (at halftime). We showed them that we had only gotten three stops in a row just one time. Our goal is three per half.
away off a Keri Kane offensive rebound. That was part of a barrage of triples from both teams in the first quarter, which didn’t even include the three free throws Atlee’s Ashley Weaver swished after being fouled while shooting from long range. Problem was, the Hawks (215) didn’t have much beyond the long ball. They made just two field goals from inside the arc on the night as the Raiders pitched a shutout in the second quarter while putting the game away with a 26-4 run that spanned the first three quarters. After Weigle and Weaver hit from downtown to stake the Raiders (7-10) to their early lead, Alyse Armentrout went to work inside. The junior forward finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.
“That’s proven to be an advantage in a number of our games this year,” Atlee coach Michael Rawlings said. “So coming into this game with Hanover, we wanted to work inside out. It worked out pretty well.” Armentrout had plenty of support from Atlee’s senior class, with Weaver and Weigle scoring 11 points each. Weaver added six rebounds, while Weigle chipped in with three steals as the Raiders won their fourth consecutive game following a 3-9 start. “We got off to a slow start, but we’re committed to a 10game winning streak,” Rawlings said. “We feel like we’re going to finish the season strong.” Sarah Wright led Hanover with 15 points. Chip Knighton can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
We showed them we had given up 54 percent (shooting). We talked about guarding the arc. I think we did a good job of that both in the first and second half.” Randolph-Macon held the Marlins to 2-of-13 shooting from behind the arc for the game. The game featured less from two Moores. Macon’s Lamont Moore was tied for highest scoring average in the conference at 18.4. Khory Moore of Virginia
Wesleyan was second at 18.1 entering Wednesday. Lamont Moore scored 9 points while Khory Moore scored 7. The ODAC loss was Virginia Wesleyan’s second of the season, leaving them tied with Roanoke at 7-2 atop the conference. Roanoke fell to Randolph in overtime on Wednesday night. The win left RandolphMacon 5-3 in the ODAC. There are four others teams with three conference losses.

Randy Anderson complimented the Confederates. “My hat goes off to Coach Bishop and the whole LeeDavis team,” Anderson said. “That game could have gone either way. quit. Lee moved back to the backfield, and a season that began with him as an unknown receiver ended with him sharing Richmond Times-Dispatch player of the year honors with teammate Joe Elrod, a member of the inaugural class of the LeeDavis Hall of Fame in 2014. Two years later, Lee is joining Elrod in Confederate immortality. “It’s a really great feeling,” Lee said. “Shocking, a little. It just shows that people really noticed and appreciated what I brought to the football field.” Lee and Elrod were also teammates at the University of Richmond, and while it was
football that brought them there, Lee was also a track standout at Lee-Davis. He was an all-district and all-region performer on the track, and his time of 22.34 seconds in the 200-meter dash still places him third in the school’s record book. But it pales in comparison to that one magic football season in 1991. Making things even more meaningful was the presence of Lee’s daughter, Deja, who joined him at the induction ceremony. “I’m very excited to share this experience with her,” he said. “For her to be able to share this memory with me, not knowing what I accomplished before, makes it that much more special.” Chip Knighton can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
