Trucker found guilty in bicyclist’s death feet behind Goodrow when he first spotted her — was actually a bad estimate that he had given in the heat of the tragedy. It was probably more likely 150 to 180 feet, giving him perhaps two seconds to react, he said Tuesday. However, Hanover Circuit Judge J. Overton Harris said he didn’t believe Hardin’s altered account of the events and noted that his accounts were inconsistent. He found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter and scheduled a sentencing hearing for June 23. “It’s a horrible, horrible case,” Harris see GUILTY, pg. 8

MECHANICSVILLE — Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center has received Healthgrades’ 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. MRMC and Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital are two among 260 recipients nationwide to receive the prestigious honor, placing them in the top 5 percent of hospitals that deliver high-quality care in the nation across at least 21 of 32 common inpatient conditions and procedures, as evaluated by Healthgrades. The two Bon Secours facilities are the only hospitals in Central Virginia named to the list. “Having not one, but two of our

During the 2016 study period (inpatient stays from 2012–2014), Healthgrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence, as a group, had a 26.5 percent lower risk adjusted in-hospital mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals. It’s the latest in a line of similar projects undertaken by Echelon, most of them involving dilapidated, historic vacant buildings. It’s not the first time the question of conflict of interest has surfaced regarding Gaskin. A project in Cape Charles that Echelon developed prompted similar questions from a competing bidder. Gaskin openly recognizes that his activities might be atypical, serving the county while making some personal real estate investments, but denies any implication that private business was conducted on county time or has ever conflicted with his role serving Hanover.
And, county officials also are aware of Gaskin’s private real estate investing. When first considered for the job, the situation was reviewed and several guidelines were put in place to avoid any actual conflict or appearance of conflict. “For many years, I’ve owned a family company called Echelon Resources, Gaskin said. “That company has redeveloped more than $50 million worth of historic properties around Virginia. During the hiring process, officials were made aware of his active developer role at Echelon. “When I took the Hanover [County] position, we discussed this and agreed that I would convert more to an investor role and other partners and family members would take care of most of the day-to-day requirements of

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor
As 60 nears, it’s time to check off ‘bucket list’ Lord willing, yours truly will celebrate the big 6-0 in July. A few birthdays seem to have special attention. For example, when I became 18, I could vote and, in West Virginia, drink alcoholic beverages. At 21, I could drink alcoholic beverages in other states. (No, there isn’t a pattern here — and I never had a drinking problem. Just pointing out the significance of those ages as we enter adulthood.) Thirty was memorable because my sister and brother-in-law filled my apartment with “Over the Hill” balloons and streamers. When 40 rolled around, co-workers in Bluefield decorated all three floors of the building with signs acknowledging that age. I guess you’re officially “old” to younger generations then. Fifty was very special because the family gathered in a large (really, too large) house in Corolla, North Carolina, in the Outer Banks. And now, here I am looking at 60. I was born July 25, 1956, and, fortunately, my parents weren’t so quirky that they would consider naming me after a disaster that took place on that date. An Italian ocean liner, the Andrea Doria, sunk. Andrea Doria Kinser doesn’t have much punch — but I bet there’s a woman out there somewhere who got stuck with that name. As for the bucket list, I’ve checked off one item. The weekend of March 12 was spent not skiing at a ski resort. Wintergreen Resort is great and I highly recommend it. But skiing and tubing for this ol’ girl? Nope. I need to visit New York City. Will it be this year? Probably not, but it’s still on the list. A niece is in a five-story walk-up in Brooklyn. I’ve already told her to come see me at the hotel (whichever one it may be). And then there’s Hawaii — but I doubt that bridge is ever built. That’s a lot of ocean to cross by air. When I think about a bucket list, I guess I’ve been pretty fortunate to experience many of the things I wanted to do in life. I know that each day is a blessing and I am so fortunate to have a good family, friends and co-workers. You don’t need a bucket list to realize the positives — we live them every day. Whatever your age, look ahead. Regrets can’t be changed. Make a bucket list and achieve what you can. Is 60 the next 40?! Melody Kinser

Spring Break at Mrs. McLean’s By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Watching news reports of current students enjoying Spring Break at some of the most luxurious places on earth has awakened me to the realization that the annual rite of passage has changed since I wiggled my toes in the Florida sand. What remains the same is the internal urge that infiltrates youths across the globe as the first signs of spring appear, and intoxicate. Packing up and heading South has always been a favored avenue of relief for kids ready to make their first adult
adventure. In 1967, I embarked on my first Spring Break adventure. Like many of the best journeys in life, the opportunity was spur of the moment, but, late on the final day of classes before the weeklong break, I found myself behind the wheel of a 1967 Volkswagen headed down U.S. 301. A friend and I decided at the last minute to meet my girlfriend at her grandmother’s house in Ocala, Florida. She took the train from Richmond, and we raced it down the coast, arriving in time to meet her early the next morning at the old sta-
tion in Ocala. Once we arrived at her grandmother’s house, a nice little home in a typical Florida neighborhood with cypress and palm trees lining the street, Spanish moss waving in the pleasant breeze, we were faced with an uncomfortable reality. So, it was with some shock that I listened to the news that we would be staying at the other grandmother’s house in downtown Ocala. When we arrived at the huge old house, I must admit Spring Break was not looking as good as I had envisioned. see SPRING, pg. 8

Proffers help with cost of increased demand on roads Ted Mentz’s letter published in The Mechanicsville Local’s March 9 issue centered on his experiences with traffic and travel times on Pole Green Road and what proffers he would recommend on kids and vehicles that might be considered to fund road improvements in Hanover. Pole Green Road, in addition to serving subdivisions, businesses and the school along the route, is being used by traffic coming from east of Old Church as a bypass of Mechanicsville, which also contributes to commuting time and delays resulting in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s level of service rating of “D.” Level of service “D” is a high density flow of traffic that is approaching unstable flow, and speed and freedom to maneuver are severely restricted even though flow remains stable. Highway design manuals recommend a level of service “C” for minor arterial roadways such as Pole Green and additional traffic volume will lessen the level of service and will eventually require upgrading the roadway and adding lanes. Mr. Mentz’s recommendation to place proffers on kids and vehicles of families moving into Hanover County would have consequences and be problematic. People might have second thoughts about moving into the county if they knew they would be charged a “tax” for each child and each car that they brought in. What would happen if, after they moved in, they were to have
an additional child or bought another car, would they then pay more in proffers? If a child died or they reduced the number of vehicles they owned, would they get a portion of their proffer back? The legality of such proffers, and the problems of implementing and maintaining such a program would be difficult. I am not a big fan of proffers, but they are one way to help with the cost of increased demand on our roads and other infrastructure caused by new housing and businesses coming into the county. The county’s decision to remove proffers on housing last year was not the best for a county such as ours with limited funding for improvements to our local roadways. As far as Mr. Mentz’s decision to drive from Old Church to Ellerson via U.S. 360 to Central Garage, U.S. 30 to West Point, U.S. 33 to Interstate 64, Interstate 64 see LETTERS, pg. 8

to Interstate 295, and Interstate 295 to Meadowbridge Road, I would suggest an alternate route that is shorter and might be quicker for him. From Old Church Road at U.S. 360 take Studley Road to Atlee Road to Meadowbridge Road. This alternative is only 13 miles long or 63 miles shorter than the route he currently takes. Also, this Studley alternative is only four miles longer than that on Pole Green Road and has less than half the traffic volume. Bob McCarty, PE Mechanicsville
said before finding Hardin guilty. Goodrow was wearing black pants and a dark gray hoodie while riding a bicycle shortly before 11 p.m. in a section of the highway that was not well lit. Several witnesses specifically referred to that stretch of roadway as “dark.” Just three days before Goodrow’s death, Deputy Timothy Hallock of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office happened upon someone at a convenience store who told the deputy that he had almost grazed a bicyclist on U.S. 1. That prompted Hallock to search for the cyclist. He

described her as “extremely difficult” to see from afar but clearly visible once he drove closer to her. He said he drove ahead of her and waved her down once she entered a safe, well-lit area, Hallock testified March 22. Hallock said the woman was listening to music and wearing dark clothes. He warned her that if she wasn’t careful, she could be killed. After news of Goodrow’s death, Hallock said he recognized her face as the bicyclist he had advised just days prior. But prosecutor Stephen Royalty argued that Hardin could have avoided Goodrow based on Hardin’s own account that he saw her probably 400 or 500 feet before hitting her and
that she was riding on the edge of the pavement in a weavingtype manner. Royalty said that should have been a red-flag to Hardin, a professional truck driver for 20 years, and that he shouldn’t have continued onward at about 45 mph while trying to “thread the needle” between her and other potential vehicles in the left lane. He should have slowed down and passed her only when it was safe to do so, giving her 3 feet of clearance as required by law, even if that meant coming to a stop, Royalty argued. Police body camera footage showing Hardin being questioned by police shortly after the crash also raised questions about what Hardin had or had
not seen. At the time, Hardin said he thought he might have hit a bicyclist but wasn’t entirely certain. When he asked the officer how the bicyclist was doing, the officer informed him of her death. But Hardin’s reaction was “cool as a cucumber,” Royalty said. Royalty said Hardin’s question to the officer was a clear sign of deflecting liability for the accident, noting that Hardin had later written in a police statement that he had exited his tractor trailer and checked on the bicyclist prior to that interaction with the officer. Royalty insisted that it was impossible for Hardin to have
not known that Goodrow was dead. Several witnesses described the scene as horrific and one in which it was abundantly obvious that Goodrow was deceased. However, Hardin maintained last week that he didn’t believe at the time that he could get over any farther when driving past Goodrow without having driven into traffic in the left lane. He said he had little time to react and he initially wasn’t even sure that he had hit a bicyclist. “I don’t know why I said that,” Hardin said of the estimated 400 to 500 feet he had to react to Goodrow, adding that everything happened quickly.
The magic happened on the ground floor, where a big kitchen sat extended over a small backyard. The smells started early in the day as greens and beans cooked, biscuits baked perfectly, and huge cuts of meat simmered in the oven. It was all in preparation for the evening meal, where every man wasted nary a second once the bell rung. Women came and went with empty bowls, returning them filled with fresh vegeta-
bles, prepared the way only a Southerner could appreciate. The conversations were lively, and the appetites were large, but the food was always the hands-down winner, and Mrs. McLean seemed to take pride in seeing a table full of people as diverse as the pattern on the aged rugs below the table, sharing stories after dinner. As the week progressed, Spring Break lived up to all of my expectations. We swam and played at Silver Springs, took
day trips to Daytona Beach, and spent star-filled nights at the neighboring lake. At the end of the evenings, my girlfriend returned to her grandmother’s, and I returned to Mrs. McLean’s. Some nights were rowdier than others, but the tall tales always flowed freely, told from well-seasoned travelers from all corners of America. I remember the small jockeys as they turned in early, ate little, and hit the scales daily to
ensure their careers. They left before daylight and returned late in the day. Point is, I learned more about life in that week than any trip I’ve taken since. I can still see the hearty laughs at that table and hear Mrs. McLean making sure everyone had plenty to eat. I often wonder what happened to that old boarding house; and it’s most certainly gone by now . . . but the magic of Spring Break survives.

detached and attached singlefamily homes are located on 180 acres that slopes down to the Chickahominy River at the fall line. Condlin said 300 of those homes will be age restricted (55 or older) and that lessens impact on traffic and schools. Many residents in the Cedar Lane and Holly Hill area have longstanding roots with the community, and many came forward to endorse the proposed community that features walking trails, a clubhouse and community gardens. Some voiced their intention to live in the community. Condlin said the develop-
ment is not only unique to Hanover County, but is one of the first developments of its kind in the nation. The development is adjacent to a 10-acre farm site that will be professionally managed to provide produce to residents in Chickahominy Falls and others. The community farm could provide educational opportunities, retail opportunities and even a farmer’s market in future years. Although owned by the same landowner, the farm is not included in the rezoning request. The property outlined in the request is currently zoned
A-1 (agricultural) and the preferred RM zoning would allow private roads within the development. The 2.25 units per acre density is slightly above limits recommended on the Land Use Map, but Planning Director David Maloney said the development “respects the rural nature of the area.” Wayne Hazzard, South Anna District supervisor, moved for approval of the request and his fellow board members agreed unanimously. Chickahominy Falls is located within the Suburban Service District.

ty needs. Supervisors also approved a rezoning request for a proposed development located at the intersection of Holly Hill Road and Cedar Lane. Chickahominy Falls is envisioned as a unique living space for seniors, but the community will also provide housing options for all ages. “We feel being intergenerational is an advantage and makes it a better development,” said applicant attorney Andy Condlin. but, eventually, Echelon was tapped to complete the project by the Halifax County Board of Supervisors. Some Hanover County residents have expressed concern regarding Gaskin’s role in the Echelon project. “These are not things that I am ashamed of, and I do not conceal my real estate investment background.” Gaskin said. “This is my experience and when Hanover County hired me, they hired me — in part — because of my real estate development background. It’s a background and skillset that has benefitted Hanover in my role here.” He said he realized that made him “an unorthodox
candidate for the job.” Keeping his private investment activity separate from his public service also has been a priority for him in his tenure in Hanover. “I try hard to keep all of that (Echelon) out of what people might consider county time,” he said. “When required, I work mainly at night and on weekends making these investments, and I don’t think it conflicts with my role for Hanover County. I understand the concern and am not bothered by some having suspicions. I would welcome a dialogue with anyone who thinks that it might be a conflict or harm Hanover in any way.” Gaskin acknowledged there might be legitimate concerns raised regarding his “personal real estate invest-
ments” but was unapologetic regarding his company activities or his role as economic development director or any perceived conflict. “At any time, if county leadership has a more suitable person to occupy this role that can do better for the county, as a long-term resident of the county, I will gladly step aside. I took this job to better my community,” Gaskin said. He also welcomes inquiries regarding the latest project in Halifax. “If they want to understand, I am available for theconversation,” he added. “I’ve made it clear to the county administration that if my unorthodox background and atypical investment activity become an unproductive distraction, then it is time for me to move on.”

Victim’s wife: ‘You murdered one of the best men’ HANOVER — More than 19 months after taxi driver James Wells was stabbed and burned alive in Hanover County by a young couple, his widow is asking a judge to give the female comurderer the maximum sentence of life in prison. Malibu Star Wells also had another wish for Alisa Nicole Dejesus: “I pray that you are in prison for the rest of your life and you see my husband’s face every time you close your eyes, that you hear his voice begging you for help.” “I hope that it haunts you,” Wells wrote. “You murdered one of the best men this world has ever known.” She said she has been haunted by the death of her husband — a 26-year-old Navy veteran she describes as kindhearted, a helper and the love of her life — and that she has fought thoughts of suicide. Dejesus, who was 19 and pregnant at the time of Wells’ murder, has been convicted of first-degree murder, abduction and arson in his death. While it was Dejesus’ boyfriend who stabbed Wells during a dispute, authorities say Wells survived that part of the attack and that Dejesus could have helped him. Authorities said Wells had been stabbed at least once in the torso and pleaded for Dejesus to help him. Instead, she drove him to an isolated area, set the taxi on fire and left him to burn. It was not clear what other injuries Wells might have suffered before the fire, because his body was burned so severely, but a

for his son Ralph’s baseball team. The Fraternal organizations were closest to him. He was a 66-year honorary member and Past Master of Joppa Lodge #40 AF&AM and later served as Treasurer. He also was a member of The Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, ACCA Shrine Temple and its subsidiary, The Legion of Honor, of which he served as Commander in 1978 and The Royal Order of Jesters. In 2009, he lost his beloved wife, Phyllis, after 62 years of marriage. He also was preceded in death by his son, Richard, a Marine Corps Vietnam casualty. Richard was a Silver Star recipient. The most precious thing to Ed was his family. They include his daughter, Linda of Kissimmee, Florida; son, Ralph and wife, Lucy, of Mechanicsville; grand-
daughters, Jessica Strange of Kissimmee, Florida, and Elizabeth Couillard of Annapolis, Maryland; grandson, Richard Mitchum and wife, Tammy, of Denmark, South Carolina; and greatgrandsons, Ross Mitchum (USN) of Norfolk and Alex Mitchum of Denmark, South Carolina; and finally his constant companion, Max “Boo Boo” Strange. forensic pathologist said it was clear he still was alive after being stabbed and ultimately died from burns and smoke inhalation. Dejesus’ sentencing hearing is scheduled May 3. ----Dyshawn Divonte Simpson, who stabbed Wells, was Dejesus’ boyfriend and the father of their now 1-year-old child. Simpson, who was 20 at the time of Wells’ death, also was found guilty of first-degree murder last year and sentenced to life in prison as part of a plea agreement. He potentially could be eligible for geriatric conditional release at age 65. “While you were driving the injured love of my life around, trying to figure out where to finish him off, I was sitting up worried because he hadn’t answered my calls,” Malibu Wells wrote in a statement that she said was sent last week to a prosecutor handling the case and the judge who will be deciding Dejesus’ sentence. WELLS “While you were casually washing my husband’s blood off your shoes, I was calling every hospital, fire stations, and everywhere else I could think of within 100 miles praying that James was safe.” Dejesus admitted to sheriff ’s office investigators that Wells had begged her for help. But during Dejesus’ bench trial in December, prosecutor Shari L. Skipper said Dejesus instead drove Wells to a more secluded area and set his taxi on fire. Dejesus and Simpson had taken a cab from Hopewell, with by her husband of 44 years, Jonathan J. Vaden Jr.; her four children, Jamie V. Lee (Kevin), Heather V. Ulsh (Brian), Jonathan J. Vaden III (Erin) and Christopher R. Vaden (Jennifer); four grandsons, Nathan, Colby, Dustin and Micah; and two granddaughters, Addison and Breanna. She loved the outdoors, especially when she could plant flowers and spruce up her flower beds. She also loved to knit and crochet. She had a special place in her heart for animals, especially dogs. She loved her family and was happiest when surrounded by her husband and children’s families in her home. She also loved the Lord with all her heart. Bonnie was an active member of her church. plans to meet a friend in the Mechanicsville area. They didn’t have money to pay for the fare, so they planned to make a run for it once they reached their destination, according to an account Dejesus told investigators. Her story, however, changed multiple times. After Wells was killed early on Aug. 9, 2014, the young couple went to a McDonald’s to wash off Wells’ blood before eating at an IHOP restaurant, where other customers paid for their meal, Dejesus told Hanover Sheriff ’s Sgt. Christopher Stem in an interrogation. Meanwhile, Malibu Wells said she was trying frantically to contact her husband that night and the next morning when he didn’t answer his cellphone. She was notified in person at her home that authorities believed the charred remains were those of her husband. He had been wearing his high school class ring and his Navy dog tags. ----Wells was killed 11 days before the couple’s sixth wedding anniversary. Malibu Wells said in interviews that they were married just three days after they met and were deeply in love. She said she met her future husband in an online chat room see WIFE, pg. 26

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Beau, 433890, is a (estimated) 5-year-old male neutered Labrador retriever. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Beau came to the shelter as a stray but he looks to have been someone’s personal pet. He is a very sweet dog and well mannered. Beau loves nothing more than to be socialized. He does well with other dogs and loves meeting new people. Beau would make a great family dog. Einstein, 433646, is a 6-yearold male neutered Labrador retriever mix. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Einstein was surrendered to the shelter earlier this month. He is a family dog that does well with children, cats and other dogs. Einstein loves to go on walks and is very friendly with everyone. He also would be an ideal family dog. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. Madi Terry and her team, FAME Allstars SuperModels (ages 7 and 8) recently won their second National Championship of the season, the fifth National Championship title in her cheerleading career, which spans five years. The recent competition, Battle at the Capitol at the National Harbor in Washington, D.C., attracted hundreds of athletes to compete for the coveted National Champion jackets. She and her team won and also scored higher than 61 other teams in their level, earning them an invitation to compete in the U.S. Finals cheerleading championships in May. The training and dedication required to excel in allstar cheerleading is considered exceptional. Between team practices, tumbling classes, private lessons, Madi spends about six hours a week in the gym. In her home, school is the priority. Her mother, Jessica, said, “We are proud that, at a young age, Madi has learned life lessons that help her succeed in school and in the sport she loves.” Following an upcoming local competition in April (the last competition of the regular season), Madi and her team will continue their training to prepare to take on the best of the best in their division at the U.S. Finals competition in Virginia Beach. Madi is a second grader at Pole Green Elementary School where she is an honor student.

Hanover County actively enforces this state law throughout the county, and violators can be assessed a $100 fine per illegal sign. In her statement, Malibu Wells said Dejesus “ruined the lives of so many people over something as insignificant as cab fare, cab fare that you knew you didn’t have before you even called for a ride.” She said her husband had a history of helping people in need and would have gotten the couple where they needed to be. The Wellses struggled financially, so James Wells worked long hours, late nights and early mornings to make ends meet. They were living in a Hopewell motel at the time of his death. “There were many times he’d call and say, ‘Someone shorted me, we’ll need to figure out how to pay for the hotel another night,’” Malibu Wells wrote. Wells’ burned-out taxi was found Aug. 9 about 7 a.m. in the 6200 block of Watt House Road, not far from the Cold Harbor battlefield park. The sheriff ’s office had spent several months looking for clues that eventually led them to Simpson and Dejesus in Richmond.
Malibu Wells said she’s thankful for investigators’ tenacity. Dejesus had testified that James Wells was “cool” and had been joking and laughing with the couple before her boyfriend turned a knife on him; she said Simpson slit Wells’ throat. Simpson told police that an emergency flare was used to set the taxi ablaze. During that interrogation, Simpson had spent much of his time diverting from questions about the homicide and discussed his football skills. Malibu Wells said her grief is compounded by the fear of any burning smell. She said that she wishes that Dejesus could live inside her mind for five minutes, to know the torment and nightmares she endures daily. “James was one of the best men I have ever had the luck in knowing and I was lucky to be his wife,” Wells wrote. “It was always us against the world. I hold his pictures and talk to him daily. You ruined the best part of my life and are the cause of the nightmares I have every time I close my eyes.”

Meeting scheduled Monday to address high speed rail project ASHLAND — Hanover County will hold a meeting regarding the proposed D.C. to Richmond Southeast High Speed Rail project from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the auditorium at Patrick Henry High School. Representatives from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) have been invited to provide a project status update and discuss future steps, including future public input opportunities. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) identified the Southeast High Speed Rail cor-
ridor from Washington, D.C., to Florida with a goal to offer a viable, efficient transportation choice that is competitive with air and auto travel. DRPT is conducting a three-year study on the 123-mile D.C. to Richmond (DC2RVA) section, which is generally expected to follow CSX right-of-way. As part of its environmental impact statement, the DRPT is evaluating which proposed route through the Ashland/Hanover area is most feasible.

For more than 41 years, the club has been actively helping those with limited sight and hearing by providing eye exams and glasses, Leader Dogs for
the blind and hearing aids for the needy in the community. With the public’s financial support of White Cane Days, those donations have helped fund the soon-to-come Mobile Health Unit. The van will allow the club to screen for sight and hearing problems that affect so many in the community. During White Cane Days, the club will be collecting used eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Options for the Ashland portion of the rail include building a third track beside the existing CSX tracks through the center of Ashland; building a double-track bypass to the west of Ashland; or not building rail improvements, also known as “no-build.” The DPRT is evaluating which infrastructure options will work best on different parts of the rail corridor. No options have been chosen yet. The Environmental Impact Study is expected to be completed by the end of next year, and is required before federal funds can be used to
construct improvements The proposed DC2RVA High Speed Rail project is a portion of a larger effort to link Washington D.C.; Richmond; Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; and beyond to Florida, with a spur from Richmond to Hampton Roads. More information about the high speed rail project may be found at http://www.dc2rvarail. com/. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.

gally placed signs are constructed of inexpensive materials and they remain within the public right-of-way and neglected,” Maloney said. “They are very unsightly and become a form of litter.” He said that signs within the public right-of-way present many nuisances and dangers to motorists. “They become visual distractions to drivers and they can block sight lines, especially at intersections and driveways,” Maloney said. “The county’s goals are to keep our county beautiful and achieve compliance with this state law,” Maloney added. “We do not have a goal of col-
lecting fines, but we will do so where necessary to discourage businesses and individuals from posting illegal signs.” In an effort to enforce the regulations, the zoning enforcement staff periodically performs sweeps of the County’s roads to remove illegally placed signs. Also remember that signs may be posted on private property only with the permission of the owner and in compliance with the county’s sign ordinance. For more information about the requirements of the county’s sign ordinance, contact the Planning Office at 804-365-6171. Nerves, Jaguars fail to get the best of L-D By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor GLEN ALLEN – Lee-Davis pitcher Bryan Diehr may not have nerves of steel, but he had nerves enough to get the job done with the Confederate baseball team visited Glen Allen Thursday night. Diehr, who came in in relief of Lee-Davis starter Justin Sorokowski in the fifth inning, set up a heroic finish for somebody when he loaded the bases with two outs and the powerful Jaguars trailing by just two run in the bottom of the seventh. But he got Glen Allen batter Janinri Baylor to pop up to LeeDavis second baseman Austin Morris to get the Confederates out with a 6-4 victory. “I’m feeling pretty good. That was a good win,” Diehr said. “But there was a lot of anxiety going along with it in those late innings.” Sorokowski pitched LeeDavis into the bottom of the fifth inning, but could not keep loose enough during a long top of the inning when the Confederates pounced on the Jaguars for four runs to take a 6-2 lead. He left the game because of some mild cramping and Diehr, who had pitched a bit Tuesday, came in. He got Lee-Davis out of the fifth, through some troubles in the sixth, and gave up two runs in the sixth before shutting Glen Allen down.

Dave Lawrence/The Local
Above, Lee-Davis pitcher Bryan Diehr came on in relief in the fifth inning and held off a Glen Allen rally in the Confederates’ 6-4 victory over the host Jaguars Thursday. Diehr got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the victory. Right, Lee-Davis second baseman Austin Morris (25) scores the Confederates’ final run.
Despite the butterflies he was feeling when he faced Baylor, he felt confident. “I knew I just had to trust my defense,” Diehr said. “They still needed two runs just to tie. I knew that, even if they had a base hit, I knew my outfielders could get them at home.” In the scorebook, the two teams looked pretty even – in all

but the score. Both teams had five hits. Both teams committed three errors. Glen Allen pitchers gave up seven bases on balls and hit a batter for another free trip to first base. Lee-Davis pitchers gave up just four bases on balls, but came close to evening out the number of free passes by hitting three Jaguar batters.
But the Confederates did a better job of scattering those gifts. Diehr, in his gut-check moments in the seventh inning, hit one Glen Allen batter, and walked two – though those numbers would have been much less if not for a misplayed fly ball that, if caught, would have ended the game in a 6-2 Lee-Davis win.
The Jaguars concentrated most of their mistakes a fifth inning in which the Confederates scored four runs to break a 2-2 tie. Lee-Davis took advantage of three hits, three walks and one hit batter while batting around. “We kind of put ourselves in a bad hole, but a lot of that was Lee-Davis’ doing,” said Glen
Allen head coach Dave Savino. “We hit the ball OK tonight. It was our pitching that let us down. We walked in three runs, and you can’t do that against a quality team like Lee-Davis.” As for the Confederates, Diehr wasn’t the only one feeling a bit of stress during the Jaguars final at-bats. “I told the assistant coaches and I told the Glen Allen coaches that this is my second career game [as head coach] and it’s going to be a short career if all of them are like this,” joked Lee-Davis head coach Tyler Johnson. “It was a great game, but definitely some drama at the end.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
Lee-Davis wins battle of top 5s at Glen Allen By Brad Bess Richmond Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – Two topfive teams met on the Glen Allen softball field Thursday night. After seven innings, it was the Confederates who remained unbeaten. Kylie Stonebraker struck out 12 in a complete game effort, three Lee-Davis hitters drove in runs, and No. 2 Le-Davis defeated No. 5 Glen Allen 4-1. The game featured two of the area’s premier pitchers in Stonebraker and Glen Allen starter Julia Fritz. Fritz and Stonebraker both entered the game without having allowed a run in their teams’ first two contests. With one out in the top of the third, Jordan Trimiew doubled to left-center and came around to score on Elizabeth Hudson’s single through the left side of the infield, giving LeeDavis a 1-0 lead. The Confederates took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on Sydney Guess’ two-run double to center. Stonebraker struck out eight of the first nine Jaguars she faced.
Jesse Gentry drove in Trimiew with a single to shallow right in the top of the sixth to make the score 4-1. Lee-Davis coach Jackie Davis called the victory “a good team win.” “We had good production throughout our lineup tonight,” she said. “I thought that we hit the ball hard and made some things happen in the field, made them make some mistakes in the field by us putting the ball in play.” Glen Allen made three errors, while the Lee-Davis defense was perfect. “They put the ball in play more than we’ve had the ball put in play against us yet, so I thought we did real well,” Davis said. Stonebraker said she knew the Glen Allen lineup was going to be formidable. “When we went into it, we were saying, ‘They’re going to hit the ball, we need to have good D, good offense too,’” Joe Mahoney/Times-Dispatch Stonebraker said. “I think we Lee-Davis’ Jordan Trimiew connects for a double in the Confederates’ 4-1 win over Glen Allen Thursday. definitely capitalized on those, Glen Allen got its first hit Fritz followed with a single, but in the bottom of the fifth. Younger Dragum earning early notice at Hanover By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – Since he was 6 years old, Jack Dragum has been a part of the Hanover baseball team. His dad is the coach, so Jack tagged along at practice, fielding ground balls and shagging flies alongside the high schoolers. Now Jack’s a sophomore, and after years of watching, he’s at the forefront of the program. He threw six innings Wednesday at Deep Run, allowing one hit and
striking out 10 as No. 1 Hanover beat the No. 3 Wildcats 2-0. He pitched some as a freshman, too. He started three or four games, but served in a more ancillary role. On Wednesday, he faced one of the area’s top teams and came out on top. Yet, he’s just one of several quality arms Hanover will put on the mound this season. There’s Grey Lyttle, Hayden Moore and John Gregory, too. All will play baseball in college. “Hayden, Grey, Jack and
John — they’re all really good,” Hanover coach Charlie Dragum said. Lyttle started the first two games, and Moore picked up the save Wednesday, pitching a perfect seventh inning. Those guys can hit, too. Gregory smacked an RBI double in the first inning, scoring Dragum from second. And Lyttle socked a solo home run in the fourth. When Jack Dragum was just a month into high school, he took a visit to the University of
Virginia. The baseball program offered him a scholarship on the spot. A few months later, he accepted. Even though the recruiting process for high school baseball players has creeped earlier and earlier in recent years, committing as a freshman still makes Dragum stand out. “It’s definitely a little weird, because you have no clue what you’ll want in four years,” Jack said. But Virginia made sense. It’s in-state, and it’s one of the
top programs in the country; the Cavaliers won the College World Series in 2015. Jack said he’s not too concerned about living up to the reputation created by his commitment. He’s simply trying to have the best year he can. And Day 1 was a big victory, picking up a win against a highly ranked program in front of a sizable crowd. “It was a great environment,” Jack said. Eric Kolenich can be reached at ekolenich@timesdispatch.com
Joe Mahoney/Times-Dispatch
Hanover sophomore Jack Dragum, son of Hawks’ head coach Charlie Dragum, has literally grown up with the team. His skills on the diamond earned him an offer at Virginia his freshman year.

Man robbed after answering online ad to buy car Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – A man interested in buying a car that was posted on Craigslist became the victim of a robbery Thursday, March 18. According to Deputy Karen R. Godfrey of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, the victim went to the west end of Hanover County where he met a female suspect near the intersection of West Patrick Henry Road and
Taliaferro Lane. She instructed the victim to follow her to the end of Taliaferro Lane. When they stopped, two black male suspects exited the adjacent wooded area and struck the victim. They robbed him of his wallet, cell phone and keys. The victim was then placed in the trunk of his car and the suspects left the area. Soon after, he was able to free himself and went to a neighboring
home where he asked for help from the Sheriff ’s Office. Deputies responded to the incident around 9:14 p.m. in the 15000 block of Taliaferro Lane. At about 1:45 a.m. Friday, the suspect vehicle was recovered in the City of Richmond. That vehicle had been reported stolen on March 12 in the city. The suspects are described as a black female and two black males. No further descriptions were available.
The victim was treated and released with minor injuries. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office at 804-365-6140 or the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. Citizens also can text Crime Stoppers at 274637 (CRIMES), using the keyword “iTip” followed by their tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.

of eating a hamburger at the world famous McDonald’s or touring Wal-mart and your local mall. You might even cook an authentic Thanksgiving meal for them to sample or they cook food from their country’s cuisine.” She said there are a variety of programs that suit working and non-working
families. “You can choose an independent stay program where the students just live with you, a group stay program where the students live with you and go two days a week to activities, or our academic program where they are gone during the workday and spend time with families nights and weekends.”
Families receive stipends to help with expenses and the students bring spending money for recreation activities. “We can help work out transportation or vacation concerns,” Hardy said. For more information, contact her at 804-909-3190 or debbiehardy2003@yahoo. com.
