Firefighters join forces for annual Fill the Boot campaign By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local RICHMOND — Under normal conditions, the site of a group of firefighters indicates trouble for an unfortunate citizen and also represents the dedication and commitment of the men and women who man those services. Firefighters from all over the region recently gathered at the James Center in downtown Richmond to celebrate another form of public service performed by local emergency workers. Representatives from the City of Richmond and Hanover, Chesterfield and Henrico counties joined Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones for the kickoff of this year’s Fill the Boot Campaign, an annual fundraiser that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Richmond City Mayor Dwight Jones, left, Chesterfield County Deputy Fire Chief Rick Edinger and Hanover County Fire Chief Jethro Piland joined forces with other metro fire officials for this year’s kickoff for the “Fill the Boot” campaign, a project designed to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Gov. Terry McAuliffe has declared August as Fill the Boot month in Virginia.

MD and other muscle diseases, and provides valuable money for research. Firefighters are no strangers to the plight of MD patients and their families. They have made assisting patients and families a tradition. “This is something we’ve done for years raising millions of dollars for MDA,” said Henrico Fire Chief Tony McDowell. “It’s something that is near and dear to our hearts. It’s not just children who suffer from these diseases, and our firefighters love getting out in the community and supporting this cause.” Hanover Fire Chief Jethro Piland said, “We have a personal connection with these families in Hanover and Richmond.” Chesterfield Deputy Fire

Chief Rick Edinger said the metro region companies share and support one another in many areas, and the Fill the Boot campaign is just another example of that cooperation. “This is a regional partnership and we all work together to make sure we raise as many funds as possible,” he said. “We look forward to this event each year and our firefighters really take it to heart and give it all they have to make it successful.” The hard work performed by these men and women result in real changes for families and patients with MD in the Richmond area. McDowell said seeing those results is a rewarding experience for his crew. His colleagues agreed. see BOOT, pg. 4

Henrico men charged in local larcenies Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – Two Henrico men were arrested Wednesday night and charged with multiple counts of credit card theft and larceny in Mechanicsville. AccordingtoSgt. James R. Cooper, deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office took Demontre Banks, 20, and Quincy Moody, 20, into custody BANKS after finding property belonging to residents in the Laurel Meadows subdivision. The men had the possessions on them and in their vehicle. A majority of the stolen property was

returned to the owners. Deputies responded around 11:50 p.m. Aug. 3 for a possible larceny from vehicles. Marks Family Dentistry The Best Care for Your Family From Our Family!

“I would not have thought I would be moved to write a review for a dentist — but my experience at Marks Family Dentistry has been so great, I want to let other people know! I have been going here for just a few years. Because of some particular difficulties I have with dental care, I actually researched for a dentist because I learned there were new technologies that would make it easier for me to have x-rays done. Marks Family Dentistry offered the technology I needed. But more than that, I am writing this review because everyone there is so incredibly kind. The Drs. Marks are very thoughtful, they pay attention to your comfort, and show concern for whether they are causing you unneeded pain or discomfort. Everyone on staff, including the hygienists and the business staff, have all been super. Tonight Dr. Marks called me at home at 8 pm to check on me. I can’t say enough good things about Marks Family Dentistry.”

$28,000 incentive grant for COTU, an allotment aimed at easing water meter upgrade costs. The board entered closed session to discuss the matter, and emerged for a 6-1 formal vote on the grant. Henry District supervisor Sean Davis posted the only opposing vote to the approved motion. Economic Development director Edwin Gaskin said incentive grants for businesses in Hanover County are unusual, but heartily endorsed the board’s approval of this request. “Hanover County Economic Development is sup-

We recommended they approve this incentive grant, and we are appreciative of their efforts to support expansion efforts by existing Hanover County businesses,” Gaskin said. Gaskin’s department conducts regular visits to existing Hanover County businesses and the COTU request resulted from one of those outreach programs. “We became involved with COTU during our normal outreach activities to Hanover businesses. During that process, COTU management made us aware of two possible expansions, one in the Town of Ashland and one at their curlife better for people who suffer from these diseases,” Edinger said. During those meetings, COTU identified needs associated with the expansion projects. “The business owners identified both the challenges and opportunities associated with the expansion opportunities, and we worked together to figure out what role – if any – that Hanover County could play to facilitate their expansion efforts at their current location,” Gaskin said. The grant is funded through a Public Utilities fund designed to accommodate such requests. “From my perspective, current Hanover GASKIN County policy allows for such incentive grants if approved by the board of supervisors, and the Department of Public Utilities has an Economic Development Fund that can be utilized for purposes such as this specific case (among other things),” Gaskin said. Davis said he has no objection to economic incentives, but questioned how this request aligns with current county policy. “I felt like this process did not adhere and was not consistent with Hanover County policy,” Davis said. “There was no return on investment analysis presented to the board.” The second term supervisor explained that most economic grants come with a clause that outlines the county’s expectations regarding the allotted funds. “There were no objectives stated or provided that the recipient must achieve,” Davis said. “I asked a number of questions that couldn’t be answered so I did not feel comfortable moving forward with an affirmative vote.” “When a decision is made that is outside of policy and the public knows of that decision, there’s a risk that citizens and businesses can lose trust and confidence in their governing body,” Davis said. He said he’s also concerned about the message this latest action

sends to other county businesses, some of whom have applied for assistance. “People don’t understand how we make decisions on issues like this,” Davis said. “Does this mean these funds are available to all businesses? Does everybody get a shot at this? What about businesses that have been here 20 years and need an upgrade? ” Gaskin said COTU has enjoyed enormous regional success and has provided a positive image of craft beer operations not located in downtown locations. “COTU is a wonderful Hanover County business, and has been growing by leaps and bounds since its inception,” Gaskin said. “In doing so, they have provided an immeasurable marketing benefit to Hanover County by promoting our community with every marketing impression they make.” Gaskin said COTU is playing an important role in Hanover County’s ability to attract regional visitors, and the effects of those visitors are far-reaching. “We in Hanover County have greatly benefited from these ‘tourists’ that come to COTU and at the same time experience the wider offerings Hanover County has to offer. Tourism is huge business in Hanover County, and COTU adds to our already impressive tourism offerings with another interesting experience for those who wish to come here.” County attorney Sterling Rives said the county considers several factors when evaluating economic incentive grants that include: Will it create attractive jobs? Will it provide additional tax revenue? Is the business a good fit or an enhancement to the county’s existing business community? Will it provide needed services, shopping or entertainment opportunities for Hanover residents? “County staff and the board have long considered Hanover’s primary economic development incentive to be low tax rates, combined with good public safety and public education,” Rives said. In addition to the Airpark expansion slated for completion this fall, COTU is planning an Ashland expansion for another project, reportedly a bar or restaurant in the downtown area.

OPINION | The Local Views

Saturday was the best day of the week

From the editor

Photos, songs bring back memories of being a teen The Throwback Thursday photos that inundate Facebook bring back so many fond memories of the teenage years. We were carefree and enjoying life to its fullest. We were invincible (or so we thought). Fortunately, the decade of the 1970s was a great time to be a teen. Even though the Summer of Love had come and gone and hippies were close to being replaced by yuppies, there was still an innocence that was somewhat reminiscent of “American Graffiti” (and if you haven’t seen the movie, you should — it was made by the same guy who was behind “Star Wars). Our summer breaks were filled with days spent at the pool and evenings cruising around the block. Gas may have been 35 cents a gallon, but I couldn’t even guess how much was used going between two drive-ins (curb service only) and around town and its two main streets. One of those drive-ins is still in operation — third generation. My parents went there when they were dating (they married in 1951). Hanging out was our social media. I guess you could classify passing notes in class as texting, because we were decades away from the technology that is commonplace today. There was an incredible sense of friendship hanging out on the curb at the drive-in, and the operators were so accommodating. The days at the pool (and we actually had two in our little piece of West Virginia) were spent mostly lounging in the sun and checking out the guys, who were usually trying to impress the young ladies. There were times we didn’t dare get into the pool for fear of messing up our hair or makeup. It’s funny to think about it now. I heard a song by KC and the Sunshine Band the other day and memories flooded back to a time filled with dancing, laughter, and good times. They were worry-free. As Bob Dylan sang, “Times They Are A-Changin’, there are days when I wish I could go back to 1972 and make changes in the direction my life took. But, then again, if I had, we wouldn’t be in this together today. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist I’m not sure what kids do on Saturdays anymore, but that special day of the week played a major role in my adolescent years. As a child, the lineup of television shows specifically aimed at kids was a rare opportunity to spend hours watching one show after the other, and a morning filled with Sky King and Penny was the absolute perfect way to begin a weekend. For many of us who grew up in this area, Saturday mornings changed partly due to our progressing age, but mainly due to a new bowling alley. Willow Lawn opened a myriad of doors when it came to local shopping, but the real gem for my group

of friends was Willow Bowl, a duckpin heaven located in the rear of the newly constructed shopping center. Edna Vassar and her Saturday morning youth bowling league provided a structured activity that quickly became a staple of Saturday mornings for hundreds of local kids. For most of us, it was our first introduction to a sport that had previously enjoyed enormous popularity but whose interest had waned in the early 1950s, especially in the South. The small pins and undersized balls presented its own challenges for a group of beginners, but some kids took to it with amazing speed and skill level. For me, the bowling was fun and the competition made it interesting, but the real attraction was more social.

It also didn’t hurt that a horseshoe-shaped snack bar served the best French fries I’d eaten up to that point of my young life, and I treated myself to a piping hot serving each Saturday. Again, growing up means a change of priorities and interests, and mornings at the bowling alley were quickly replaced by Saturday afternoon jam sessions at a place called The Sheik. All through my early teens, those afternoons were spent in a darkened nightclub, transformed from its usual atmosphere and clientele of adults and alcohol. Soft drinks and teenyboppers replaced the normal crowd, most of us experiencing our first real interactive experience at a real dance club. The sessions became so popular see SATURDAY, pg. 8

Law officers deserve respect, gratitude By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News Getting to talk to people about what they do, what’s important to them, and what they experience on a daily basis is among my job’s biggest perks. Over the years, I’ve met and interviewed people from just about every profession there is, and among those thousands of people have been more than a few police officers. As the events unfolded in Dallas, Texas, and then again in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, memories from the past decade drifted back into my mind. There were memories of officers directing traffic in the scorching heat, helping stranded motorists during blizzards, and just generally heading out into weather no reasonable person would want anything to do with. There was the deputy calmly but firmly assuring a man seriously hurt in a car accident that he was going to be OK, and that the deputy was personally going to make sure of it. There was the officer who had to break the news to his partner’s parents late one horrible night that their son had been killed while on duty. There have been countless other instances I’ve witnessed personally or been told about over the years, stories that drove home just how challenging the law enforcement profession can be. Day after day, shift after shift, these “regular people” are

asked to go out and deal with situations the rest of us are happy to avoid. No, not all officers of the law are perfect. And even the best in the profession stumble from time to time. But, having met so many and seen what they deal with every day, I can’t tell you how thankful I am that they are there. I hope our readers will join me in offering a heartfelt thank you to all the law enforcement officers in Goochland and beyond for all that they do to keep us safe. We owe them our respect, as well as our sincere gratitude. Roslyn Ryan is editor of The Goochland Gazette.

Sheriff: Be safety conscious with online, in-person transactions Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

Trust your instincts. Insist to meet at a public place. Consider having a friend accompany you. Tell a friend or family member where you’re going. Do not meet in a secluded area. Do not invite strangers into your home, and do not go to theirs. Be cautious when buying/selling high value items. Perform the transaction during daylight hours. If it sounds too good to be true, it normally is. Take your cell phone with you.

“We encourage everyone to also follow these tips if they plan to meet someone they have met on a social network,” Cooper added. and socialize when I grew up. I’m also thankful for those special places in the past that provide a lifetime of memories — places like The Sheik and Willow Bowl.

Sgt. James R. Cooper noted “How can you reduce your risk of becoming a victim of iden-

tity theft?” He offered the following advice? Be aware of scams and “phishing” schemes. Do not give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or over the internet unless you have initiated the contact. Protect your personal data. Use security software with firewall and anti-virus protection. Use strong passwords. Shred all documents that contain personal information. Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails. “How can you reduce your risk of becoming a victim during in-person transactions from online sales?” Cooper asked.

Angela in her new role.” Baxter said she is thrilled to have the opportunity and comes at the position from the vantage point of an experienced auditor who also has deep exposure to customer service and taxpayer concerns. “Working with the Treasurer’s Office has given me a sense of the importance citizens place on how their tax dollars are utilized,” Baxter said. “It’s a great opportunity for me to be their advocate to see that their tax dollars are used appropriately and to be a good steward of their money.” Hanover’s internal audit director reports to the board’s Finance Committee. The department performs operational, financial, performance and compliance audits of the county government and school system, the Pamunkey Regional Library and the Pamunkey Regional Jail. Internal audits are performed according to Government Auditing

Standards, issued by the Comptroller General of the United States. The department also performs special reviews as assigned by the board’s Finance Committee and the county administrator and assists the county’s external auditors. The Internal Audit office maintains a Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline for County employees and residents. This hotline (804-365-6813) provides a confidential means for employees and citizens to suggest improvements or report concerns involving fraud, waste and/or abuse of county and school assets or resources. The board announced Baxter’s appointment on July 27. Baxter succeeds Mike Taylor, who resigned in July to become director of Performance Audits for the inspector general for the Commonwealth of Virginia. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from

Mary Washington College in 1989, Baxter worked with the auditor of Public Accounts until 1995, reaching the position of local government audit supervisor. She was hired as an auditor by SunTrust Bank in Richmond in 1995 and was there through 2000, when she accepted the position of chief deputy treasurer by Hanover County Treasurer Scott Miller. As chief deputy treasurer, she directed the Customer Service, Collections and Accounting Divisions of the Treasurer’s Office. In 2006, Baxter was named Deputy Treasurer of the Year by the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia. Baxter has been a Montpelier resident since 2003. She and her husband Tim have a daughter, Sierra, and a son, Bryson, who attend Hanover County Public Schools. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Buddy, left, 446493, is a (estimated) 5-year-old male Walker Hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Buddy is a sweet and playful hound that has been in the shelter for about a month. He has lots of energy and loves to run. He also seems to do well around other dogs. Buddy would be a great family dog. Scotty, right, 447181, is a (estimated) 10-year-old male Bichon Frise mix. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Scotty came to the shelter last month as a stray. He looks to have had a previous owner. He has a sweet temperament and likes to be held and petted. He has an active temperament considering his age and he also does well around other dogs. Scotty does have some minor health issues such as tartar buildup, heart murmur and slight arthritis in his back leg but he really is a sweet dog. He would make a very good house pet. For more information on this great pet, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. National Night Out unites communities with law enforcement

Photos submitted by Teresa Parrish and Sgt. James R. Cooper

Hanover Hounds K9 Search and Rescue Team took part in National Night Out and made appearances at several locations. Rubber noses were distributed to those who wanted to be a hound for a day. Among those who chose to “become a hound” were members of Hanover Fire-EMS while at Sherrington. While in the Bell Creek Road area, Sean Davis, Henry District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, and his family became “Hounds for a Day.” They joined in the fun by wearing noses, a theme of the evening. A special thank you was extended to the Davis family, along with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Hanover Fire-EMS “for the continued support for our team and allowing us to be part of Hanover County.” In the photo at left, Capt. Rickey Dandridge is shown with some of the folks at Burkwood Robin Ridge. One of the “stars” of the evening was a bloodhound with Hanover Hounds K9 Search and Rescue. In the photo at right, Davis, on the right, is shown with, from left, Lisa Davis, Julianne Davis, Capt. Brian Parrish with Winn, and Justin Davis.

Col. David R. Hines, left, in the photo above, and R.E. “Trip” Chalkley, commonwealth’s attorney, took part in National Night Out. In the middle, Maj. 52 communities join in National Night Out festivities Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – Over 52 communities took part in National Night Out in Hanover County on Tuesday, Aug. 2. “We shared in great food, fun and fellowship,” Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, said. During their National Night Out event, residents of the Cool Spring Forest subdivision dedicated their new Neighborhood Watch sign. “We are excited to welcome them to the Neighborhood Watch program,” Hines said. “National Night Out is an official night where law enforcement agencies celebrate partnerships within the community. Fortunately for the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, this is

something we celebrate daily. Partnering together and developing a shared vision of community has always been the key to a successful law enforcement agency. We are blessed to have such great community partners in Hanover County. I would like to thank all the communities for the hospitality shown throughout the evening,” said the sheriff. Sgt. James R. Cooper said the event kicked off at 10 a.m. at the Target in Mechanicsville and, throughout the day, Hanover deputies and first responders visited Neighborhood, Business and Worship Watch communities. Partnerships were strengthened, and the outpouring of support reflected the great relationships we share with our

community. “Organized by the Hanover Sheriff ’s Office, the National Night Out event in Hanover signifies our unified stand against crime,” Cooper said. It is formalized through the sheriff ’s office’s SHIELD program in partnership with these community watch programs: Business Watch Neighborhood Watch Worship Watch “These programs connect with our neighborhoods, businesses and faith communities through continual communication, education, and working together,” Cooper said. “In these programs, citizens are afforded an opportunity to learn more about their Sheriff ’s see 52, pg. 15

Thompson Street speed limit tops council talks By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The speed limit on Thompson Street dominated last week’s meeting of Ashland Town Council, with Police Chief Doug Goodman updated a proposal about extending the 25 miles per hour area. Council recently addressed the issue, at which time Goodman recommended the extension, which would reach Chapman Street near Princess Cleaners. He said the Ashland Police Department had

conducted several speed studies over the past two years on that stretch of road. The study’s results showed that 85% of drivers passing through the area were travelling at average speeds of 30 mph, with 15% travelling above 35 mph. “It was not uncommon to see acute speeds reaching over 50 mph on this stretch of roadway,” Goodman said. Serving as an entrance to the town limits coming from neighboring Hanover County, it is a particularly busy section of roadway. Since 2013 when the APD first initiated

the studies, there have been 12 reported motor vehicle crashes, six of which occurred between Chapman Street (east) and James Street. In 2015, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Traffic Counts indicated that approximately 11,000 vehicles travel this portion of Thompson Street on a daily basis. Chief Goodman’s recent proposal prompted citizen input. Ross Herring, who lives on Henry Clay Road, approached council to voice his concerns with the current state of the roadway. Herring agrees with the proposal to

extend the 25 mph speed limit farther west on Thompson Street, which eventually turns into State Route 54. “My desire would be to see it go to John Street, which would be past Jake’s Place,” Herring said. Citing that a 35 mph posted speed limit to some drivers would be wrongly interpreted as it being all right for them to drive in excess of 40 mph, Herring enforced his reasoning for seeking the 25 mph extension. see SPEED, pg. 18

‘Town and Country’ solo exhibition now underway Staff Report news@mechlocal.com MONTPELIER – A solo exhibition titled “Town and Country,” featuring the paintings of Melissa Malone, is underway at The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education at 17205 Mountain Rd. in Montpelier. The exhibit opened with a reception on Friday, Aug. 5, and continues through Tuesday, Aug. 30. Malone’s works are described as “pastoral living

with a hint of nostalgia and the flavor of comfort food.” Malone starts from a point, positions herself as cartographer, drops a pin somewhere between the eyes, then builds space and an aesthetic of the body outwards. In “Pastoral Propaganda,” the bodies are farm animals and machinery, mapped over vast backgrounds of solid and vivid colors, suggesting portraiture where one expects landscape.

Miss Annie, her beloved great aunts, Joseph, her papa, and the other precious figures who shaped her childhood. After her subjects announce themselves, Malone gives the process over to their demeanor, finds them in her anthology of favorite tunes, and uses the canvas as their medium. In “Self Portrait, she sees herself and visits again with her mother, “Linda, at home in the same color palette. The machines represent

where the artist has lived or where her family is from. Everything is old, toned with nostalgia. Taking in the layered message from “Pastoral Propaganda of cow snouts, sheep eyes, a tractor grill, hay-

In addition, he said they will “provide a grace period for the new speed limit to take effect,” and clarified that it will only apply for offenses that aren’t outstanding or well above the old speed limit (35 mph). In response to Goodman’s updates, town council mem-

bers agreed that the process needs to begin moving forward and added the proposal to the action agenda their next scheduled meeting on Aug. 16. “It makes sense to me, for now, to at least do the 25 mph out to John Street. I live on Snead [Street], just a little bit up the street from the intersection of Henry Clay. I guess I

see a near accident at least once a week at that intersection. So I think it’s worth consideration,” said council member Steve Trivett. Ashland residents seeking more information regarding the Thompson Street speed limit proposal are encouraged to attend the Aug. 16 meeting. It starts at 7 p.m. at Ashland Town Hall at 101 Thompson St.

Premier League visit leaves lasting impacts By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – It’s not every that one of the elite soccer teams in the world comes to your town, but for the past three years, the Richmond Kickers have been able to bring members of the English Premier League over for friendlies. This year’s visitor was the Premier League’s only Welsh member, Swansea City AFC. The Swans, a century-old organization who finished 12th in the league’s 20-team field last year, played before an enthusiastic crowd of more than 7,000 local (and vocal) fans on a stormy Saturday night in July. The crowd that remained after a lengthy severe-weather delay went home feeling warm and fuzzy after Richmond’s 2-0 victory. More lasting, however, was the effect of the Swans’ visit on local soccer players and programs. “It encourages them to play,” said Lee-Davis head girls soccer coach Casey Paul of the impact on local youth. “It shows them [teams from] other places and how important [the game] is around the world.” Youth scampered all over the grandstand area at City Stadium the night of Swansea City’s visit. After the worst of the storm had passed – but before the game resumed – kids were busy kicking around soccer balls and

honing their soccer skills in the concession area above the stands. While the Premier League visits boosts fan interest, they also affect the development of local soccer organizations.

“Bringing that game here kind of opens the eyes of the local clubs, who put together their programs to mimic what they’ve done overseas,” said Manny Tavares, an assistant boys soccer coach at Hanover

High School and founder of the Mechanicsville United Football Club/Richmond Kickers Mechanicsville. He said the goal is to produce athletes capable of more than just fancy footwork. “England is obviously a big

area because they do these youth academies where they incorporate A-plus soccer to develop youth, so it’s not just focusing on sport alone. They educate see PREMIER, pg. 31

• ASHLAND – Patrick Henry High School will hold an all-day youth basketball camp from Monday, Aug. 22 to Wednesday, Aug. 24, for youths aged 6 to 14. The camp, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, will focus on improving basic basketball skills. Cost is $75. Atlee falls in TOSC semifinal By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Atlee Little League’s 10-11 baseball team got within a game of the Tournament of Champions title game. Unfortunately, the team got no further. Atlee, the Virginia state champions, fell to North Carolina 12-6 in the semifinals of the tournament, which was held at Elm Street Park in

Greenville, North Carolina, on Aug. 2. Head coach Jamie Sanford said the team ran out of pitching after having to use its top two pitchers in a 16-8 victory over West Virginia the day before. “We weren’t hitting well as a team,” Sanford said. “Pitching kind of died in one inning, and that allowed North Carolina to get by us.” Georgia, which beat Atlee

in the tournament opener, knocked off North Carolina in the final. It was still a good experience for the Atlee team. “I told them going into this thing it was a bonus for us to be playing in that tournament,” Sanford said. “I think they felt it was a big thing to be there.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

the children at the same time,” Tavares said. “It helps youth clubs focus on a bigger picture than just soccer alone.” Even within the sport, Tavares sees a long-term effect in the United States. He said that, while youth soccer clubs have focused on spotting and retaining kids with excellent technical skills, they have let the better athletes slip away into other sports, such as (American) football, basketball and baseball. “I think there is some disconnect between what these [youth soccer] coaches see as potential and what they see as talent,” Tavares said. “I think we separate the youth too early … We put too much emphasis on their technical skills and not look at the overall picture. “When England comes over hear and plays, they see a totally different athlete. They see an

athlete that’s complete, not just in soccer skills, but in strength. … You can always take an athlete and make them technically skillful in a sport.” Atlee head girls soccer coach Bruce Lovelace said influence of the Premier League visits is stronger for boys programs than for girls teams. “I know a lot of the guys watch Premier League, so obviously when you have a Premier League team come in, it excites them,” Lovelace said. “But in terms of the women’s side, I think the work ethic on the women’s side has been [established] in the United States. … If you look internationally, we’ve always been the premier level for women’s soccer.” Still, for Lovelace, it is nice to see top-shelf soccer in town. “Back in the day the only way I could see soccer was on black and white TV on PBS,” Lovelace said. “It’s nice to have it locally.” Both the Swansea City and

Invitational winners

the Kickers benefit from such friendlies as well. “It’s a big thing for us as a club,” said Swans chairman Huw Jenkins. “It’s just great for us to be part of this and allow our club to grow, not only [on the] pitch but also off the pitch, and to get our name a lot more well known in America than it has been.” It helps the Kickers become better known – and accepted by local fans – here. “We try to bring these teams is because we want to continue to show we have fantastic credibility. We’re a very, very good team,” said Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer Leigh Cowlishaw. “This is the future. … We’re on a roll right now and our goal is to be No. 1 sports franchise in Richmond. That’s going to happen eventually.” Cowlishaw seems plenty of signs that it is happening. “A lot of millennials are involved now. We’ve got a very young, new generation of soccer fans,” he said. “You look at the atmosphere. It gets better and better, week in, week out, year after year. Good times ahead.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

TAURUS • Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, tackle some slow and steady work this week rather than trying to be innovative or unique. There will be a time to innovate later on. Right now you need to prove yourself. GEMINI • May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you are in the mood to get started on something new over the next few days. Think about some tasks you have been putting off and develop a plan to address them.

CANCER • Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, take an intellectual approach to solving a problem that has been bothering you for quite some time. Ask a friend for advice if you find you need some help.

LIBRA • Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, things have been going your way for some time now. It’s exciting waiting for whatever is just around the corner. This unanticipated good fortune is just what you need.

CAPRICORN • Dec 22/Jan 20 Try to meet some new people, Capricorn. Add to your collection of networking contacts, which will help further both your professional and personal lives.

LEO • Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, approaching someone who has not done his or her share of the work can be di fficult. Tread gently because this person may have been distracted by something more pressing.

SCORPIO • Oct 24/Nov 22 Open yourself up to a new way of thinking, Scorpio. While your way of doing things may be right most of the time, adopting a fresh perspective may help you see things more clearly.

AQUARIUS • Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, relax when a stressful situation presents itself. Add some humor to the situation so you and others can handle it in the most positive way possible.

VIRGO • Aug 24/Sept 22 Your big ideas are highly valued, Virgo. Let others know what you are thinking and you may find that even more people are receptive to your ideas than you initially thought.

SAGITTARIUS • Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, try doing something on the spur of the moment. Spotaneity may give you a rush that you may not have felt in some time. This could be just the excitement you need right now.

PISCES • Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, if others are uninterested in being social, find creative ways to enjoy some alone time. This may include music or artwork.

THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS

ARIES • Mar 21/Apr 20 Everyone recognizes your ambition this week, Aries. Channel your energy constructively and don’t be ashamed to pursue your goals so strongly.
