The Supreme Court of Virginia sided with Hanover County on Thursday in a drawn-out disagreement between an RV dealership and the county over a digital sign connected to a planned outlet mall. The state’s high court affirmed a circuit judge’s September 2014 decision to dismiss a lawsuit filed by EMAC LLC against the county. EMAC, which owns land where McGeorge Rolling Hills RV Supercenter is located, contended that the Board of Supervisors discriminated when it extended a permit for a large LED sign on neighboring property but denied a similar request from EMAC. In its lawsuit against the county, EMAC sought $6.9 million in damages. “We are very pleased, said Hanover County Attorney Sterling E. Rives III. “We hope that the conclusion of this litigation will clear the way for the construction of the new outlet mall and for the successful development of Northlake
Park. Rives and William H. Shewmake, a lawyer representing EMAC, argued their cases in front of the justices in early November. In 2012, the supervisors approved a conditional-use permit for two large LED signs 3,000 feet apart at Northlake, which includes the planned 400,000-square-foot Outlets at Richmond and the RV dealership. One sign would be on the north side of Northlake and the second would sit to the south where EMAC is located. Northlake Land Investments Inc. and outlet developer Craig Realty applied for that permit jointly. The permit has to be used within a year but the signs can’t be built until construction on the outlets starts. The permit was renewed once, but in 2014 EMAC sought to extend the permit for the southern sign separate from Northlake and Craig Realty. The county approved the extension request from Northlake and Craig but denied the extension request from EMAC. The county argued that Northlake and Craig Realty
were best positioned to advertise the Outlets at Richmond as well as the other retailers located within the business park, which is the intended purpose of the signs. “The reasonableness of the board’s decision not to grant EMAC an extension is fairly debatable, and as a result, the circuit court did not err in granting the defendants’ ‌ motion to dismiss,â€? Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn wrote. Goodwyn established that EMAC and Northlake “are not similarly situatedâ€? because Northlake applied for the conditional-use permit while EMAC did not. In oral arguments, Shewmake, the lawyer for EMAC, characterized the supervisors’ decision as a “stark example of a locality impermissibly discriminatingâ€? against two similarly situated landowners. The opinion also noted that the county required the outlet mall to be a prerequisite for the construction of the signs and that the initial application “contemplatedâ€? that EMAC would sell the part of its property where the southern sign was to

A community meeting about the proposed Big Oak at Bell Creek mixed-used development project attracted several residents last week. Among the concerns addressed was increased traffic on Pole Green Road.

Residents: traďŹƒc a concern at proposed development site M E C HA N IC S V I L L E — Concerns about increased traffic on Pole Green Road dominated resident comments during the Jan. 11 community meeting held at American Legion Post 175 in Mechanicsville about the potential Big Oak at Bell Creek mixed-use development project. Spearheaded by Big Oak Development Company LLC and including members of Stanley Shield Partners, another developer, the Big Oak and Bell Creek project seeks to rezone 63 acres north of Pole Green Road, between
Bell Creek Road and Bartram Springs Drive, and adjacent to Bell Creek Park from A-1 Agricultural to M-1 Industrial and R-M Residential designations for the purpose of constructing residential mixed-use housing and a commercial area. Residents said they were concerned that the planned development will cause the already-congested area of Pole Green Road that leads toward Interstate 295 to become even more congested. “People want to live simply, a resident said. Residents want to “come out of their driveway and get to A, B, C not try to figure out how to get to A, B and C, just get there.
Residents said they also are worried that the increased traffic density caused by the proposed development will negatively impact the ability to make a left hand turn at the Pole Green Road and Bell Creek Road intersection due to a “bottleneck on Pole Green Road. To try and alleviate some of the residents’ issues with potential traffic increases cause by the Big Oak development, proffers were added to the project plan to provide for specific road improvements. Some of these proffers include: optimizing traffic signal timings at the Bell Creek

Donald Trump will not be president
From the editor
What would you have done with the money? With the world watching, and lottery machines spitting out tickets left and right, we saw a record $1.5 billion Powerball last week. Folks from three states — California, Florida and Tennessee — awoke Wednesday, Jan. 13, to life-changing wealth. So what happens now? We all think about what we would do if we struck it rich — whether through a lottery or an unexpected inheritance. This writer has discovered through aging (and hopefully maturing from a financial standpoint) that impulse buying may have been OK (it really wasn’t) when I was much younger — but there’s this thing called retirement that has a very strong appeal. Surprisingly, our needs and wants change as we age. So, what would you do with unexpected riches? The simple life has a great attraction: a beach, an ocean breeze and fruity drinks (non-alcoholic, thank you). But what about sharing the wealth? I’d like to believe I would review charities and how those organizations raise funds and distribute them. As we’ve seen in the past, there are abuses within at times, but, by the same token, some merit as much help as possible. How much money do we really need to live comfortably yet not excessively? Do we think about those who struggle daily? Do you ever wonder if the person in front of you at the grocery store is having to decide which purchases are within the parameters of a set budget? What about the homeless? Do you ever stop and just hand someone $5, $10 or $20 and urge them to buy a meal? Yes, it’s easy to think about the mega-house, luxurious automobile, exotic travels and closets full of clothes, shoes and purses. But, at the end of the day, where is the satisfaction? There are so many rewards to helping others. My late sister was very generous as she became more successful professionally. She was a member of a women’s philanthropic organization. I used to call her “Reasonable Robin,” a title she was quite proud to have. I’m convinced she would be impressed that practical and justifiable spending have become part of my life. In reality, wealth comes in far more ways than a bank account. Giving is better than receiving. Melody Kinser

By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News A word of warning: What I am about to say may break a few hearts and elicit a few angry letters —but I am going to say it anyway. Donald Trump is not going to be president. He is going to be — and apparently already is — a force to be reckoned with, and he is going to be a thorn in the side of many. And, of course, he is going to be entertaining. But he is not going to win the presidency. Listing the reasons why would
take up more space and ink than we have available, but to do so also would overshadow one very interesting point about the fact that someone like Donald Trump (a man who has managed to stay relevant for the past several decades by ingeniously turning himself into walking, talking, oddly-coiffed caricature) has captured the attention —and the steadfast support — of so many. At the very least, the fact that a Donald Trump presidency is being discussed outside the realm of comic strips and late night talk show parodies tells us one simple fact about the American public: A lot of us are very,
very angry. To a man, just about every person I know who sincerely supports Trump’s alleged bid for the presidency has become enamored with him largely due to the billionaire’s somewhat pugnacious attitude toward, well, just about everyone. “He tells it like it is,” they say, pointing to the fact that Trump “doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything or anyone.” In a world that had become uncomfortably politically correct for many, Trump wantonly insults see TRUMP, pg. 8

Resident: County businesses are the best
es, to keep our community the best place to call “home!” Cindy Spott Mechanicsville
My husband and I moved to Hanover County 26 years ago, and it was undoubtedly one of the wisest decisions we’ve ever made. Many reasons and people help contribute to that belief, but today I want to thank the businesses in our county. More specifically, Michael Cohan, owner and managing partner of RiverBound on the 360 corridor, and Marty’s Grill over on 301. Having been involved in my children’s schools as a volunteer, PTA board member and substitute for the past 20 years, I can attest to the dedication that he has always shown for our Hanover students and their programs, as well as other fundraising events that benefit our community. Do his businesses benefit from donating food and time from these requests? From a publicity standpoint, absolutely! But he gives it right back – with no hesitation! So Michael, I just want to thank you, for everything you do for our Mechanicsville/Hanover community. It would not be the great place that it is to live and raise children if it were not for the extremely generous supporters such as you, backing it all up, making it happen! You don’t just “Talk the Talk,” you actually “Walk the Walk” . . . Thank you! And not to be remiss, there are many other businesses in our county that offer the same support for our citizens in Hanover County. I encourage all our residents to support those business-

In addition to traffic congestion issues, residents said they were concerned with the developer’s plan to include rented apartments in a portion of the residential area of the development. The Big Oak at Bell Creek development project proposes the construction of 27 detached single-family homes, 94 attached single-family townhouses and 214 multi-family apartments. The planned apartment complex will be designed with garages for tenants and will include a clubhouse with amenities and a pool. In an effort to reduce the number of school-age children living in the development, the four-story buildings will only house one- and two-bedroom units. There are expected to be 72 apartments per unit at rental rates ranging from $1,050 o 1,100 for one-bedroom units and $1,350 to 1,400 for twobedroom units.
Additionally, apartments will have interior corridors, providing elevator access to top floors. Tenants will be able to enter the apartment units only via secure key fob access. “We wanted to provide a higher quality building that we’re proud of having in Bell Creek for the long-term,” Rob Lanphear, a member of Stanley Shield Group, said. Residents at the meeting said they believed the multifamily apartment complexes “seem to be out of character” for the area and they “do not enhance the quality of life see TRAFFIC, pg. 8

The proposed development project also includes a proffer stating that no more than 50 percent of the single-family detached homes may be constructed and no more than 50 percent of the single-family homes may be constructed prior to the commencement of construction of at least 50,000 square feet of commercial space within the M-1 area. The Big Oak at Bell Creek development plan is expected to be presented to the Hanover County Planning Commission
at its Jan. 21 meeting. At that meeting, the planning commission will decide to defer a decision about the project or vote whether or not to recommend approval of the project to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. If the project is recommended for approval by the planning commission, the board of supervisors will hear a presentation about the development project within approximately 30 days. One resident pointed out that there is already a lot of
traffic generated from people in the Tappahannock area who use the entire length of Pole Green Road to get to Interstate 295, causing traffic backups and delays. Among those representing county government at the meeting were Angela Kelly-Wiecek and Canova Peterson, Chickahominy and Mechanicsville District representatives on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, and David Maloney, director of the Hanover County Planning Commission.

“In the present case, neither party has identified any difference in the properties, other than the ownership,” Powell wrote. It could be “fairly inferred”
from the permit application, she continued, that Northlake was “acting as EMAC’s authorized agents” when the permit application was submitted.

women, minorities and fellow presidential hopefuls, burnishing his self-styled image as a man whose vast wealth has made him untouchable. For people fed-up with the smarmy charm of career politicians, Trump offers just the opposite: He is perhaps the most unapologetically uncharming candidate in recent memory (need proof? During a recent debate, he made the typically boorish governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, look almost demure).
Trump, his supporters feel, is a brawler — and he’s fighting for them. When it comes to Trump, there is certainly more to be written. But who will be the one to address the rising tide of anger and dissatisfaction among certain segments of our population is anyone’s guess. No, I’m not concerned about Trump sitting in the Oval Office, or about him having access to the Nuclear Codes. I’m more concerned about what his potential candidacy says about us. ECHANICSVILLE — Kersey Creek Elementary School is once again a finalist in the Scotties Trees Rock video contest. Students, administrators, faculty and staff are trying to win the grand prize that eluded them last time around. K.C. Comet (Krista Loucas of KCES) said, “We came close, but need your help to do it all again!” “Reach out to your circle of friends, colleagues and acquaintances who can best spread the word about the contest and help our entry get as many votes as possible. Friends who are most active
online will be the most helpful,” K.C. added. Some tips include: Online voting started Jan. 11 and continues through Feb. 7. All voting is done online at www. scottiestreesrock.com Each person may vote only once a day. Voters have to register on the site the first time they vote — after that they will be able to go right into the site with an email address only. Send an email with links and contest information to your friends. Make it easy for your friends to click and vote. Be prepared to send this email several times during the voting period. Post the Scotties link on your
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Instagram pages. Please consider sharing the contest and our school video on your Blog. Most importantly, ask your friends to share it as well. You may want to change your home page to Scotties for 30 days as a reminder to vote every day. “We are proud to be representing our state as the only school from Virginia in the top 10. Getting out the vote is so important,” K.C. said. “Remember, you may need to send your message out multiple times to encourage the maximum amount of sharing and voting. The video with the most votes will receive $10,000 for their school. Please help push KCES to first place!”

Jimmy Hardy with Archery Addicts 365 recently presented the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office with a $400 donation to the Project Lifesaver Program. Archery Addicts 365 raffled off a bow provided by Jeff Buttloth, owner of Shooters Archery. The donation was accepted on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office by Maj. Tom Woody and Sgt. Tim Sutton. Project Lifesaver is a program offered at no charge for participants. It is designed to serve those who have cognitive disorders and are prone to wandering. Each participant receives a personal transmitter, which is worn around their wrist or ankle and emits a signal. In the event that the client goes missing, this device assists the Sheriff’s Office to locate them more quickly, saving valuable time and lives. For more information about enrolling a loved one or contributing to this important program, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 804-365-6110, or visit: http://www.hanoversheriff.com/232/ProjectLifesaver.

They stopped to say “Merry Christmas” and extended their thanks for the Sheriff’s Office’s assistance when Robert became lost in the fall of 2011 in the North Anna Battlefield Park. “This was truly a demonstration of the cooperation we share with our public safety partners, the partnerships we share with our citizens, the compassion and faith of our community and the dedication we all have to serve those in need. Seeing Robert is another reminder of how blessed we are to be a part of this community,” Hines said.

ASHLAND/WESTERN HANOVER | Also serving the communities of Montpelier, Beaverdam, Rockville and Doswell
‘Counting Our Blessings’ theme of Women Build Week Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND — From Nov. 11-14, as part of Women Build Week, Hanover County women worked together to build affordable homes, hope and opportunity for hardworking and deserving Hanover families. Women Build Week is Habitat for Humanity’s program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. This program brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. In November, the women of Hanover County were building in honor of Thanksgiving, with the week’s theme being “Counting Our Blessings.”
Participants included groups of women from Capital One and Atlee Community Church. These dedicated women volunteered their time to work alongside homeowner and single mother, Larissa Wilkerson, to build a home for her and her son. Hanover Habitat for Humanity holds Women Build events four times per year. Hanover Habitat’s next Women Build Week, “Home is Where the Heart Is,” will be held Feb. 10-13, 2016, in honor of Valentine’s Day. To volunteer for this event, contact Erica Velander at volunteer@ hanoverhfh.org. Hanover Habitat for Humanity extended its thanks to Lowe’s, which sponsors Women Build nationally. Thanks were also extended to Subway and Homemade’s by
Suzanne for lunch donations for Women Build Week. Behind-the-scenes look at Gifted Program slated Staff Report news@mechlocal.com MONTPELIER – A behind-the-scenes look at the Gifted Program at South Anna Elementary School will be provided at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, in room 42. Principal Alicia Todd said the presentation is geared towards parents of non-identified students. Parents will leave understanding more about: Differentiation at South Anna The Hanover County Gifted Criteria How to refer or submit
parent portfolios Who should come? Parents who want to know more about how things work. Learn who receives gifted resource time and why. Parents of students who are currently being referred. Get tips for filling out paperwork and submitting a parent portfolio. Parents who think that their child might be gifted and are interested in referral. Learn how gifted students at each grade level are performing in language arts and math. see GIFTED, pg. 17
Gifted and Talented referral deadline: The spring testing window is open until Sunday, Jan. 31. A teacher or a parent may refer a child for gifted screening. If your child exhibits gifted behaviors and is performing above level, your child’s teachers may refer your child as a good candidate. Teacher referrals most often occur during the spring testing window. This allows teachers time to get to know children and to collect work samples. Parents also may refer students for gifted testing. “We encourage parents to discuss their child’s performance with their teacher as they will have insight into gifted characteristics and above level benchmarks,” Todd said. If you would like to refer your child for testing to determine if they would be eligible for gifted services, submit the referral form by Jan. 31. For more information, contact ege’mmill@hcps.us.

and participants were able to choose a book. This month, the school is reading folktales, fairy tales, legends, tall tales, myths and fables. A folktale is a short story that has been passed down from generation to generation. Fairy tales, legends, tall tales, myths and fables are all different kinds of folktales. Fairytales are short stories that feature fantasy characters such as fairies, elves, giants and mermaids. Legends are semi-true stories that have been passed from person to person. Tall tales are stories that are exaggerated. The narrator often tries to tell you a “true” story that is obviously twisted or unbelievable. Myths are made up stories that explain the existence of a natural phenomenonsuch as where thunder comes from or why snow falls from the sky. Myths often involve gods and goddesses. Fables are short stories that involve personified animals and teach a lesson or moral.
Students are encouraged to keep reading fairy tales, fables, folktales, tall tales, legends and myths in January for your chance to win. The story map is due to Hillary. Billingsley by Friday, Jan. 29. Todd released the following upcoming events and dates of importance: Thursday, Jan. 28 – 1 p.m. early closing Friday, Jan. 29 – SCA Spirit Day (wear a jersey for your favorite team); 1 p.m. early closing. Lead Teacher Specialist John Trott issued its recommendation at a meeting last week. The study group considered options such as requiring student athletes to maintain a 2.0 grade point average, but decided to leave the current policy in place until they gather more information and meet to issue a final report in the spring. Among more than 700 athletes who participated in fall sports in the county, only 13 would be affected by the changes. The small percentage of students not making the 2.0 mark was not, in the committee’s mind, a sufficient number of athletes to affect a change in policy. Hanover and Chesterfield counties currently regulate academic requirements utilizing VHSL guidelines, while Henrico County and the City of Richmond have instituted 2.0 GPA minimums. Lead teacher specialist John Trott headed an 18-member committee comprised of students, parents and teachers that studied the effects of raising academic requirements for Hanover County student athletes. The committee recommended leaving the current policy in place and will issue a final report in the spring. The Hanover County School Board agreed.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has two wonderful pets available to a good home. Asher, 427327, is a (estimated) 1-year-old male American Staff Terrier. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Asher has been in the shelter since Christmas. He is a super friendly guy. He seems to do well with other dogs and is good on a leash. Shelter employees have been treating Asher for his skin but he seems to be responding very well to treatment. Joe, 427804, is a 5-year-old male domestic short-haired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Joe was surrendered to the shelter earlier this month. He is a nice, calm cat. He is very friendly around people, loving to be scratched on the head. Joe looks to be a great candidate to be an indoor cat. For more information on these two great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. sibility tinged with light-hearted humor. “I’m starting my 33rd year as a Hanover County board member, and I assure you I will not be here 33 more years,” Stanley joked. “I’m honored to serve as your chairman for 2016, and, by the way, I still only get one vote.” The veteran supervisor said he would depend on his fellow board members to address issues in their respective districts. “Whatever comes up in your districts, I am going to let you take care of. If you need help, I’ll
be there to help you out when needed,” Stanley said. “If county issues come up, I won’t be hesitant in forming another committee.” Hazzard expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve the county. “I would like to thank the board for putting up with me for the last year,” Hazzard said. “It has been interesting to say the least. I have enjoyed the cooperation I’ve gotten.” Hazzard emphasized the importance of the board’s vision to work together to accomplish the county’s goals. “This board and this staff work as a team. From the bike race, to the courthouse and all
the other accomplishments, it all happened in spite of me,” Hazzard said. “I appreciate you all putting up with my mistakes and giving me the opportunity to sit in this chair and represent you. Thanks to all of you and it’s an experience I will not forget.” Anglea Kelly-Wiecek, Chickahominy, was appointed vice chair, and had high praise for the new chairman as she placed his name in nomination. “He is an example of hard work, humility, honesty and a true public servant,” Kelly-Wiecek said. Last week’s meeting was the first for incom-
ing supervisors Scott Wyatt, Cold Harbor, and Faye Prichard, Ashland. Wyatt was immediately tasked with selecting the Cold Harbor District’s new Planning Commission representative. He recommended former Lee-Davis High School student and James McGHEE Madison University graduate Fred McGhee to fill the chair of outgoing see STANLEY, pg. 27

Atlee’s Weaver joins thousand-point club By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Ashley Weaver waited nearly four years for the milestone she reached last week. From the day she joined Atlee as a freshman, the Raider guard/forward wanted to join the 1,000-point club. With a layup in the third quarter of a 111-39 loss to No. 1 Highland Springs, she did just that – and she smiled as she did so. “It’s kind of crazy. It’s kind of surreal,” Weaver said. “It’s been my goal since my freshman year, so, I don’t know – I kind of expected it, but it still feels awesome.” Many people expected it. Weaver averaged 11.6 points per game in her sophomore year and 19.9 points per game last year. It seemed only a matter of time this season, and a certainty after the previous week when she was less than 10 points shy of the mark. Weaver said it was nice to have it over with, though. “It is a huge stress,” Weaver said. “I worried about it every single game, worried about whether I would get it or not, so it’s definitely nice to have it over with. … It’s a huge relief.” Weaver was inspired by Stephanie Staples, her predecessor in the Atlee 1,000-point club who, coincidentally, reached that milestone in Weaver’s fresh-

The Atlee girls basketball team celebrates Ashley Weaver (back row, third from right), who scored her 1,000th career point in the Raiders’ 111-39 loss to visiting Highland Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
man year in a loss to Highland Springs. “We saw a little something in Ashley then as a freshman,” said Atlee head coach Michael Rawlings. “So Stephanie asked Ashley, ‘Carry my jersey, because I feel like you’ll be the next 1,000-point scorer. Lo and behold, that’s been the case.”
The goal began to look more like reality last year. Weaver said Kylie Eastman fed her the ball on the basket that put her over. “I think it was Kylie who passed me the ball,” Weaver said. “So I knew that me and her were going to have a connection hopefully and she would just get
it to me and it would be awesome. So, it worked out well.” Highland Springs head coach Franklin Harris, who has had seven 1,000-point scorers in his career so far, said it is a big accomplishment. “Even if you play four years, even if you started as a freshman, 1,000 points in
high school is big,” Harris said. “You’ve got teams on nights when you’re not going to score, you have nights when you’re going to shoot bad, so 1,000 is still a goal for every basketball player. That’s an accomplishment. Think of all of them that see WEAVER, pg. 30

ASHLAND – It may have been swimming, but it came down to two rounds of rock, paper, scissors. After Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry swam to a team 168.5-all tie in their dual meet at Patrick Henry YMCA Friday night, Patriots head coach Bob Flanagan pounded his right fist into his left hand. Lee-Davis head coach Stuart Bernstein immediately picked up the cue. The first round ended in a pair of scissors. In the second round, Bernstein chose a rock, which Flanagan covered with paper. So you can say the Patriots won, sort of. The Confederates had to make do without some see SCORE, pg. 31

Hawks, C-feds split basketball doubleheader By Kris Mason For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – It was all Hawks even before the game began. During warmups before Hanover’s boys basketball game with Lee-Davis Friday night, a Lee-Davis player dunked the ball and was assessed a technical foul, giving the Hawks two free throws to start the game. That set the tone for an 8752 Hawk victory in the second game of a varsity doubleheader at Hanover High School Friday night. Hanover senior Alan Dabney led the Hawks (8-8) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Ryan Payne scored 12 points, including three 3-pointers. Junior Jason Wade, however, was the motional lynchpin of the Hawk performance, with 18 points, eight rebounds and a pair of exhilarating dunks. One dunk beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter and solidified

Right, Hanover’s Jason Wade (20) drives through Lee-Davis defenders in the Hawks’ 87-52 boys basketball victory over the Confederates Friday. Above, Lee-Davis’ Avery Cooper (21) gets caught picking up her dribble as Hanover’s Keri Kane (4) applies defensive pressure in the Confederate girls’ 60-42 win.

spot for the Confederates, leading them in scoring with 22 points. While the Confederates lost the nightcap, the Lee-Davis girls won the opener of the doubleheader 60-42. Things looked hopeful for the Hawks early on. Led by Rachael Metzger and Sarah Wright, Hanover was able to jump out to a 12-4 lead. The Hawks still led at the end of the first quarter with a 16-11 lead, but the Confederates made
a run in the second quarter and gathered momentum going into halftime, even though Hanover still led 24-22. Lee-Davis (4-10) dominated the second half, outscoring the Hawks 38-18. The Confederates were led by Whitney Hopson with 16 points. Codie Heilig had 15 and Indya Branch added 14 as Lee-Davis was able to keep their composure after trailing early in the game. Lee Davis head coach Alvin Puller said the team’s ability to

“We always knew he was a special player, even from his freshman year. He’s really becoming that dominant player around the area and if you ask me he’s one of the top players in the state as a junior.” Thornton said a key to the Hanover performance was their full-court press that forced the Confederates (3-11) to pick up the pace. “Hanover likes to play a fast pace,” said Lee-Davis head coach Chad Bishop. “We are not a fast paced team and we tried to play with them, simple as that. When we run our stuff we get good shots, and that’s part of what we need to do in our brand of basketball.” Irving Jones was a bright

‘R.J.’ has fourth-quarter impact in Atlee win By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – Patrick Henry had a slow start in the first quarter. Atlee had a dud of a third quarter. Both teams had a furious fourth quarter. But in the end, the Raiders had Robert Jenkins Jr., and he – with 11 fourth-quarter points – gave Atlee the edge it needed to escape the Patriots home gym with a 47-42 victory. Jenkins finished with a game-high 28 points, despite the fact that the Raiders managed just two points as a team in the third quarter. “They’re a good defensive team,” Atlee head coach Phil Reynolds said of Patrick Henry. “The difference was … R.J. is the best player, and he stepped up big at the end.” Jenkins said the Patriots – who tied the game several times in the second half – put a scare into the Raiders as they clawed back from a 26-16 deficit. “It’s never a good feeling to go up by a lot in the first half and then in the third quarter score as little as two points,” Jenkins said. “Meanwhile the other team is making a huge run. It’s never a good feeling.” The Patriots switched to a more expansive zone in the third quarter that seemed to throw the Raiders off their game for a bit. “Sometimes they would trap on the wings, sometimes they wouldn’t, so it would kind of throw our men off,” Jenkins

said. “Then again, we held the ball a lot on offense. We usually stick a guy in the middle, but nobody would go there, so it was just us passing the ball around the perimeter.” Reynolds said the Patriots’ zone should not have been so mystifying to the Raiders in second half. “They went to a very extended zone that we acted like we had never seen before,” Reynolds said. “I told our guys we can’t just run our regular zone offense and stand around – they’re really pressing. We had to be more active with it.” The Raiders’ response contributed to a collision on the court that resulted in two players leaving the game. Reynolds asked his son, Les, to set a screen. Patrick Henry’s Davon Carter didn’t see it and plowed into the Atlee player. Both were sprawled on the court while trainers attended to them, eventually determining that both needed stitches. The loss of one Holman slowed the Patriots’ offense down, and the loss of another – Marcus Holman, who fouled out – may have given the Raiders the edge in the fourth quarter. Still, Patrick Henry head coach Randy Anderson said the Patriots’ slow start put them in a position to fade at the end. “We put ourselves in situations … where we spend so much energy trying to fight,” Anderson said. “It’s always little points in the game where that
did really well tonight. I was very pleased.” Patrick Henry’s boys – led by Scotty Mizelle, Dalton Nash, and Ted Schubert – edged LeeDavis’ boys. Lee-Davis’ girls – led by Sarah Gaston, Hannah Ikenberry and Lacey Kramer – edged Patrick Henry’s girls by

Patrick Henry, Atlee get top 10s in Tiger tourney By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor HENRICO – Patrick Henry and Atlee wrestled to top 10 finishes in the Tiger Invitational wrestling tournament at J.R. Tucker High School Saturday. The Patriots, with three wrestlers in the finals – and two champions – finished third and the Raiders finished ninth in the 16-team field. J.R. Tucker won the meet with 196 points, followed by Nansemond River with 171. Patrick Henry finished with 167 points, followed by Glen Allen (166) and Western Branch (162.5). Atlee finished with 93 points. Patrick Henry’s two champions were Brendan White in the 160-pound division and Scott Toms at 182 pounds. Both won by second-round pins. White defeated Tucker’s Matt Powers in 3:20, while Toms defeataed Monacan’s Martiese Phipps in 2:49. White was in quite a scrap, with the two wrestlers tied a 7-7

in the first round. “It was a wild start,” White said. “I got in a couple of weird positions, didn’t necessarily secure a position that I had got put to my back once – same for
him. I rolled out and ended the period 7-7.” White started the second round in the down position and couldn’t at first, break Powers’ hold.
“He was doing really well on top,” White said. “I was trapped on bottom and he shifted to the side to work a turn. I managed to gain the advantage on that shift.”
Toms’ championship match started equally close, but without the fireworks of White’s match as neither wrestler could get the other down at the start. But Toms, a senior, used his greater experience and endurance to his advantage in the second round. “I’ve definitely been working on my cardio and on what I can do the second period to win matches,” Toms said. “I’m more of a second- and third-period wrestler.” While he avoided making mistakes the first round, he pounced quickly in the second when he saw his chance, with the pin quickly following a throwdown. “I was aggressive and I knew what I could do,” Toms said. The Patriots other finalround wrestler was Jeremy Roup, who lost a 6-1 decision to Midlothian’s Michael Dunn in the 145-pound division final. Patrick Henry had three third-place finishers: Luis Sagal (126 pounds), Christian Sanchez (138 pounds) and
Tanner Krump (170 pounds). Garrett Altizer finished fourth in the 220-pound division. Atlee’s best individual finishes were fourth place: Brick Haynie (120 pounds) and Cohen Call (152 pounds). The Raiders’ head coach, Eric Monger, said the result wasn’t quite what they were expecting, but there were still some bright spots among a depleted roster. “We wrestled some good matches,” Monger said. “We definitely didn’t wrestle to our potential. We’re dealing with a lot of illness right now, so we weren’t able to bring the full lineup that we were expecting to bring. We’re still dealing with some nagging injuries as well. … “The wrestlers we did bring came out of the gate very strong. Their first matches were very good. We ran into some hiccups along the way.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
Confederate gymnasts edge Patriots By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILE – Not much separated the performances of Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry gymnasts in a duals meet at Stonewall Jackson Middle School Wednesday. One team held a slight edge in one event, such as the Patriots on the balance beam or the Confederates on the floor performance. But in the end, Lee-Davis eked out enough points on its final event, the floor performance, to edge the Patriots by less than two points, 139.575137.8, to claim the team victory

for the night. For both teams, the meet was an important step in preparing for the postseason, which will begin in two weeks. “We’re feeling pretty good,” said Lee-Davis gymnast Madison Godsey. “We’ve had a few bumps in the road, obviously, but I think this meet kind of showed us that we can do it, we just have to pull it all together.” Godsey, with a strong floor performance, managed to finish a close second to Patrick Henry’s Sierra Baxter in allaround standings. Baxter scored 36.35 points overall, while Godsey finishing with

36.1 points. Baxter held on for the win despite struggling on the balance beam – an event that tripped up quite a few gymnasts on both teams. “I fell in my series,” Baxter said. “But the rest of my routine I felt like I got up there and finished really strong. I stuck my back-tuck and my leap series.” Brooke Morris had two individual wins for the Confederates in the uneven bars (9.3) and vault (9.45). Godsey won the beam (9.15) and Baxter won the floor (9.6). Everyone is focused on getting ready for their respective conference tournaments. For
Baxter, a sophomore, a lot of her preparation is mental – an area in which she has made a lot of progress this past year. “Since last year I have improved a lot, just from being really nervous as a freshman to now being where I can just relax and compete,” Baxter said. Godsey, a senior, said the Confederates need to work on the mental aspects of the sport, too. They had several falls on their next-to-last event, the balance beam – something that seemed contagious. “We definitely need to work on keeping ourselves together after we make a mistake,” Godsey said. “Last year we went
