Parents voice support for 10-point grading scale

By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — When Hanover County School Board members met last month, they discussed the possibility of transitioning from the current grading scale to a 10-point system.

Due to a lack of data regarding a possible switch, members took no action.

A recent VCU-based study that officials hoped would supply that data did not achieve the desired results and made no recommendations.

T. STEPHENS CHURCH – A Benefit Fish Fry and Concert will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, for Lindsey Fortune at the Shepherds United Methodist Church at 163 Fleets Mill Rd. and U.S. 36 in St. Stephens.

Lindsey was involved in a one-vehicle accident Sept. 3, 2015, on her way to work.

She sustained a hole in her aorta, a Class 5 laceration to her liver and a T11 spinal cord injury and became sepsis.

After 15 surgeries and five months in the hospital, she was released.

This benefit is to help Lindsey with the continued medical cost for her treatment.

Fuel assistance applications being taken by Social Services ASHLAND — The Hanover County Department of Social Services is accepting applications for the Fuel Assistance Program.

Fuel Assistance is a temporary program that helps eligible households with the costs of heating their homes.

The amount that is received will not necessarily cover all of the winter heating costs but will be a supplement.

Benefits are based on the availability of funds and the number of applications received within the state.

In order to be eligible for fuel or utility assistance, your household’s income must be less than the maximum allowed for the number of people in the home, and you must be responsible for paying the heating bill.

Applications will be processed as soon as

possible but no later than mid-December.

Funds are sent directly to the vendor beginning the first week in January. Hanover’s share of this statewide allocation is limited.

Applications for Fuel Assistance are available at the Hanover County Department of Social Services, 12304 Washington Highway, Ashland VA 23005 or 8475 Bell Creek Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23116.

You also can submit an Energy Assistance application online at www.commonhelp.virginia.gov, or you can call a Human Services Agent at 804-365-4100 to have an application mailed to you. A face-to-face interview is not required.

HCSO, APD, Public Works join in drug take-back HANOVER – The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, in cooperation with Ashland Police Department and Hanover County Public Works, will be conducting a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Mechanicsville Solid Waste Center at 7427 Verdi Lane in Mechanicsville and the Ashland Police Department at 601 England St. in Ashland. Those locations have been established as collection sites.

This is a free service to Hanover County and Town of Ashland citizens. It is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration Office of Diversion Control.

Citizens can safely surrender their expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceuticals and medications — no questions asked, no identification required.

These items include: Prescription medications and over-the-counter solid dosage

medications (e.g., tablets, capsules, pills, etc.).

Liquid products, such as prescription cough syrups (please keep sealed in original container).

The following are examples of items that will not be accepted: Intra-venous solutions, injectables and needles.

Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Wittman addresses federal decisions with local impacts

By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER — It’s not often that a member of the U.S. House of Representatives visits a meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors meeting, but that’s exactly what took place last week.

Rep. Rob Wittman, who represents the First Congressional District that includes Hanover County, provided an update on

several issues in Congress that have local implications.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be here today to update you on what’s going on in Washington. You know 99.9 percent of the time the best thing we can do is just stay out of your way,” Wittman said.

Gill pointed out the central office received comments from parents who also favored the current system, but suggested the issue deserves further review.

“The board heard there was significant interest about exploring moving from a seven-point scale to a 10-point scale,” Gill said. “Some speakers came out tonight and they have received a number of comments that displayed that is a topic of interest.”

Gill said the board heard the comments and reacted appropriately. “The board had a willingness to be responsive to an item of interest from the community.”

The superintendent placed no timetable on the focus group’s recommendations, but formation of the committee will begin immediately.

In other matters, the board heard a report by a committee formed to study the possibility of eliminating mid-term and final exams.

The group, comprised of educators, students, parents and interested citizens, studied the benefits and drawbacks of a system of testing that has been employed in schools for decades.

“The instructional benefits of an exam are minimal,” said director of secondary education Bob Staley, who headed the focus group.

He was joined by parents and teachers who supported the group’s recommendations.

Hanover’s 2016 Teacher of the Year Kelly Pace noted that the elimination of the exams would allow more instructional time for students.

In their estimation, the exams might have outlived their usefulness in a changing educational environment.

In addition to the four days allotted for students to take exams, four additional days of preparation are required, representing a total of 16 days a year spent on exams.

The group did not recommend eliminating final exams, yet, but suggested the board take a close look at the possibility for the 2018-2019 school year.

Should God and discipline return to our schools?

Dems: Where does Wittman stand?

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor My high school graduating class has a closed Facebook page, so I recently asked (to make sure my memories were correct) if we had a devotion/prayer and joined in unison in the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before classes started.

The 60-year-old memory was working that day — I was right. Students were selected to read a devotion or say a prayer and lead the Pledge of Allegiance on the principal’s intercom system.

As to my question, responses included one classmate noting that her elementary school had prayer before the day began, at lunch and before dismissal. When she got to junior high school, prayer was said at the start of the day and at lunch.

“We turned out blessed and thankful,” she said.

Many social media posts claim that part of today’s problems in schools is the fact that God was removed.

We also had discipline — as in paddles, not a “go sit in the corner time-out.” And, despite the lack of technology, nine out of 10 times parents knew about the incident before you arrived home.

So, there were those consequences to face too.

My question is: Should God and discipline be returned to the public school system? I’m sure there are some in our community that just screamed and possibly cursed me.

The question is legitimate. Would returning prayer and discipline to the classroom reawaken something that may be missing?

When children are being gunned down (no, I’m not anti-gun; I grew up in a home with pistols

and rifles owned by a member of the NRA), we need a solution.

Are children being properly disciplined at home? Contributing columnist Jim Ridolphi recently wrote about taking away his kids’ smartphones as a method of punishment. In today’s world, I’m sure that hurts.

Back in my day, losing landline phone (remember those?) privileges made the point.

I do hope you’ll take the time to write a letter to the editor or send an email response to mkinser@ mechlocal.com.

Your opinion matters.

In closing, Nov. 8 is fast approaching. Mark your calendar, set your smartphone, put a post-it on your computer monitor, whatever reminder works for you. We have too much at stake.

A younger brother sings the praises of having an older sister

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist No one ever writes a column about their sister. I can only wonder at what the reasoning is behind that oversight but, perhaps, sisters are too often taken for granted or underappreciated.

That is not the case pertaining to my sister and me for seldom a day goes by I don’t think of her and thank my lucky stars that I have more than

just a great friend — I have a wonderful sister.

Having an older sister is an advantage that only younger brothers can explain, but everything in life is easier as a child when you are following a female sibling who’s more experienced ... and smarter.

It also had its disadvantages. In high school, teachers would marvel at the difference between the two of us. While she was a straight-A

National Honor Society student, I was not as focused on my studies as a high school student.

“Are you Rebecca Ridolphi’s brother?” many teachers would ask as I entered classes a couple of years after her. When I replied in the affirmative, they seemed amazed at my shortcomings when compared to her stellar record and straight-A report card.

And even though we were on different sides of the academic land-

scape, we remained close and she never judged my misguided exploits or exposed my lack of aptitude. She often told me I was just as smart as her, but I knew that it was just an effort to build my confidence and instill a belief in myself.

Fifty-five members of the Hanover Democratic Committee recentday signed a petition demanding to know if Republican Congressman Rob Wittman will continue to endorse Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after the release of an Access Hollywood video showing Trump making disparaging, lewd and vulgar comments toward women.

For the past several months, you have continued to wholeheartedly support Trump even after his repeated statements disparaging minorities, immigrants and women. Now, we demand to know if you will continue to champion him after a video clearly shows candidate Trump objectifying women and espousing aggressive sexual behavior toward women.

Your campaign spokesman said that you “do not condone the objectification of women.” Our question is: Do you condone the man who embodies the objectification of women? Will you have the courage to disavow Trump, as some other Republican candidates have, or will you continue to go along to get along? We want to know the measure of your character; we already have the measure of Trump’s character, or more accurately put, the lack thereof.

We will continue to forward Mr. Wittman additional names of those who sign the petition as they come online or sign in person at our upcoming events. “ I am quite sure Mr. Wittman will find that his constituents in Hanover County do not approve. It’s not the first time we’ve been in touch. For many years, I feared Rebecca’s kindness would result in someone taking advantage of her, or some fool mistaking her kindness for weakness. But all who encountered her quickly learned a quiet demeanor and subtle style did not equate to weakness or lack of intensity, and she quickly rose to the top of her field.

Through the years, miles separated our families, but we still maintained that special brothersister relationship. She unashamedly claims me as her little brother, and I am glad to have her as my older and only sister.

It’s also hard to believe that this month, my sister turns 70 years old. For me, that’s hard to accept and I often think of our time as kids as we played on the swings or played kickball. I doubt either of us will be duplicating those feats this October.

As she gathers with her kids and grandchildren for the big celebration, my thoughts won’t be far away. For all the words of support, the love and kept promises, I’m eternally grateful to the best friend I’ve ever had in this world, my sister.

Wittman introduced the Accountability, Collaboration, and Transfer (ACT) now for veterans’ legislation, which includes measures to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits claim process and expedite veterans access to quality care.

This set of bills includes the Veterans Choice Accountability Act (HR 3883), which would expand veteran access to nonVA medical care and establish a review of the VA’s implementation of the Veteran’s Choice program; and HR 3885, which would require a military doctor to be a part of the evaluation for service-connected disabilities.

Wittman also is fighting for better transparency and accountability within the VA, and voted for Veterans Modernization Act

(HR 2556), which would direct the VA to report annually to Congress through the duration of 2016-2020 on its furnishing of hospital care, medical services, and improvement in these key areas.

Lastly, on the many recent visits Wittman has made to Hanover Count where I have attended with him, I have found him to be very concerned about the citizens, has given straight answers to questions posed to him, has fully explained his voting record and discussed the $20 trillion deficit this country has and what must be done to bring it back under control.

Kim D. Aguilar, 44, of Henrico, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016. She loved family, friends, animals and spending time at the beach.

She is survived AGUILAR by her loving husband, Jim Aguilar; daughter, Amaris Thomas (David); son, Anthony J. Delgado; mother, Faye E. Curlee; father, Ronald Hughes (Diana); brother, Jeff Hughes (Kristi); and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. IVY MAY BALLARD Ivy May Ballard, 92, a native of Dorset, England, passed away in Mechanicsville on October 15, 2016. During World War II, she witnessed the London Blitz and the invasion of Normandy, while serving in the Royal Air Force. She came to the United States as a war bride on the last voyage of the Queen Mary, known as The Gray Ghost during the war. She retired from Phillip Morris and enjoyed retirement in Topping. She was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed their fellowship.

Preceding her in death were

her beloved husband, Albert Herman Ballard; her parents; two sisters; two brothers; one brother-in-law; one sister-inlaw; and a son-in-law, David Shirey. Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughters, Velma Ballard Shirey of Mechanicsville, Margaret Ballard Harper and her husband William of Sandston, and Nadine Ballard Madison and her husband Daniel of Chesterfield. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Sam, Hunter and wife Jenny, Shawn, Brandon, and Heather; nine great-grandchildren, Destini, Sepp, Amber, Jillian, Ella, Alexandra, Savana, Gavin, and Aurelian. She also was blessed to have a very special friend, Melba Waldron. Ivy became an American citizen, however “home” was always England.

She loved primroses and bluebells, and the White Cliffs of Dover always brought tears to her eyes when flying in. She taught her family BALLARD about nature and the need to preserve it. Hilton Warner Goodwyn Jr., died October 6, 2016, at age 92. Born June 19, 1924, he grew up in Church Hill and Ginter Park, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Richmond.

During World War II, he piloted B-24s, flying bombing raids on Germany across the Alps from Italy. For his service, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. An accountant for Commonwealth Natural Gas, he had been forbidden

by his father to enter his real estate and mortgage business.

Thus, at his father’s death, Hilton was suddenly thrust into complete management, with the added burden of an IRS audit of his father’s estate that resulted in a 16year Tax Court case, which was finally won.

GOODWYN Under his leadership, Realty Industrial Loan Corporation, a regulated small loan company, found its niche in single-family first mortgages, instead of riskier second mortgages.

He improved the Richmond Shopping Center, the western anchor of Carytown, with a Ukrop’s Supermarket (now Martin’s/Publix), Ellwood Thompson’s, Walgreen’s 5,000th drugstore and CVS. He built parking decks at

6th and Main and Cary Streets and developed and leased other building and parking facilities around the city. His private H & H Foundation funded charitable grants to individuals in need before transferring its assets to the Children’s Hospital in Richmond. In February, he gave $5 million to benefit the Better Housing Coalition, in honor of his parents. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Erline Goodwyn; daughter, Rebecca Faye Goodwyn of Asheville, North Carolina; son, David W. Goodwyn (Susan) of Hampton; stepdaughter, Beverly Presser (Erich) of Richmond; grandchildren, Abigail Hockett (Jim), Hannah Goodwyn, Joshua Goodwyn (Devon), Zachary Goodwyn and Rachel Goodwyn; and great-grandson, William Goodwyn. There is a local packaging event scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville.

A number of organizations are joining the event with monetary donations and volunteers.

The groups include: members of several local Rotary Clubs, students from the RandolphMacon College Rotaract Club (a college level Rotary affiliate), students from the Lee-Davis High School Interact Club (a high school level Rotary affiliate), Scouts (Boys and Girls), and other organizations.

Additional groups are invited to participate.

This won’t be Lee-Davis High School’s first experience with a Stop Hunger Now Packaging event.

Bob Rodgers, special education teacher and Interact Club sponsor, has worked with the Interact Club students to host these events in the past.

A packaging event can be as small as 40 volunteers who can package about 10,152 meals in under two hours.

Some packaging events have over a thousand volunteers and the number of meals packaged is measured in 6 figures. The goal for the Nov. 5 packaging event is 29,160-plus meals.

Mrs. Slusser taught at Scott High School in Madison, West Virginia, from 1947 to 1948.

She and her family moved to Lexington in 1950. She later taught for seven years at Lexington High School before moving to Mechanicsville in 1967. In Mechanicsville, Mrs. Slusser taught mathematics for two years at Lee-Davis High School and 19 years at Stonewall Jackson Junior High, now Stonewall Jackson Middle School. She retired from teaching in 1988. She was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church.

One Ashland rezoning deferred, another approved

By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — The Ashland Planning Commission reviewed two rezoning applications at its Oct. 12 meeting, approving one and deferring the other.

Planning commissioners voted to defer the Bulifant Homes rezoning, and unani-

mously approved the Green Chimney rezoning with the proffers dated Oct. 4.

Along with the deferral of the Bulifant Homes rezoning, commissioners also deferred the applicant’s corresponding request for a conditional use permit (CUP).

She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Paris came to the shelter last month as a stray. She is a wide-open, playful gal. She has a very sweet temperament and loves to be around people. She also does well with other dogs. Paris will do best with an owner who can give her regular activity. Zeke, 450230, is a 4-year-old (estimated) male hound. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Zeke has been at the shelter for over two months now. He is a very nice dog. He does well with every dog he comes into contact with and also people. Zeke has a playful side and loves to run. He does very good on a leash. Randall “Brooks” White II arrived to an enamored Christin and Randy White on September 22, 2016, at 9:09 p.m. He was 20 inches long and weighed 5 pounds 13.5 ounces. His 5-year-old sister, Cadence, immediately claimed Brooks as her most treasured toy upon his arrival at home. Buddy, the family’s half-human boxer, sniffed Brooks twice and proceeded to guard his crib as he slept loyally by baby’s side for the remainder of the night. He joins an adoring extended family. “None of those things were thought out, and they are going to be applying for federal money. I believe if there is not a situation where there is agreement across the board, then they shouldn’t make the application.”

Wittman said his job is to make sure the DRPT (Department of Rail and Public Transpirtation) reflects you decision. “That’s my job ... to make sure we push back on anything that doesn’t serve

Widdick approached commissioners once his wife had finished her statement, saying, “We certainly support little league, it’s great when spring comes and those little kids are out there, it’s almost like all America right there,” he said.

He proposed a compromise, in that, while the season is in play, the signs should stay up. However, he said when the season ends they should be coming down.

Another local issue that requires an increasing portion of the county’s budget is new regulations regarding TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load), or daily runoffs of pollutants that flow into the Chesapeake Bay. For the past couple of years, state grants and matching funds have assisted the county in meeting the requirements, implemented in states over 15 years with clear target goals in place to reduce levels.

The measures require

upgrades in storm water management, runoff systems, water treatment and other improvements like creek bed restorations.

As a former supervisor, Whitman empathized with the county’s position of accepting federal unfunded mandates, like the TMDL requirements that could cost the county up to $30 million.

“First of all, where do we get the dollars?” Wittman asked. “Second of all, we’re being asked to do things that really haven’t been proven out to result in the things they want.”

19 citizens certified to respond to emergencies County graduates 10th CERT class with members trained to help HANOVER — Hanover County is preparing citizens to respond to emergencies in their communities by training them as a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Nineteen citizens recently graduated from the 10th Hanover County CERT class.

Graduates of the most recent CERT training class were: Jesse Atkinson, Bob Bolender, Donna Bryan, Lou Canulli, Beth Canulli, Janice Chick.

Classes are taught by professionals from Hanover Fire/ EMS, the American Red Cross and other agencies that are active in emergency preparedness.

The next CERT training class is tentatively expected to be held in the spring.

Raiders’ last-minute heroics net upset win

By Billy Fellin Richmond Suburban News MECHANICSVILLE – Just before a crucial fourth-and-9 from the Atlee 28-yard line, the Raiders called a timeout.

Atlee coach Matt Gray gathered his offense and prepared them for the next play.

“I said ‘You’ve just got to be smart,’ ” he said. “ ‘Keep your composure and do your job.’ ” The Raiders did just that and more when Connor Young found a wide open Queshon Baker for a 72-yard touchdown with 1:16 on the clock –enough to boost Atlee past No. 10 Henrico 28-25 on homecoming night.

“This is awesome,” Gray said.

“These kids have been fighting and battling and not getting the outcome that we wanted. We had a good week of practice and kept talking about composure, discipline and doing things the right way. If we did those things, we’d win the football game. And we did, those guys executed. I’m proud as heck of these guys.”

Baker, who was able to get behind double coverage on the final scoring play, had 112 receiving yards and the touchdown for the Raiders.

The matchup didn’t have the feel of one that would go down to the wire early on as the defenses dominated.

Varina dominates youthful Hanover squad Despite the bleak statistics, Stoudt is optimistic about the future.

“We’re in the process of putting together a new core group of young men, a group like the one that graduated last year,” he said. “We’re going to take the lessons we learned here tonight and the experiences we had as a team, and hold on to them for the years to come.”

The Hanover squad, which lost 19 seniors from last year’s squad, were outgunned when they hosted Varina Friday night. And it showed as the Blue Devils dominated the Hawks in a 41-0 shutout victory over the hosts.

The Hawks have struggled all season.

“We graduated the core group of a very successful team from last year,” said Hanover head coach Derek Stoudt. “That was a group of players who had been together for a very long time, and we’re missing that experience this year.”

The Blue Devils’ offense amassed 465 total yards, while their defense held the Hawks to 121 yards.

Hanover’s offensive problems were compounded by the loss of starting quarterback Clayton Cheatham to injury in the first quarter. Stoudt wouldn’t speculate as to the extent of Cheatham’s injury.

free safety David Daniels went to the ground in obvious pain.

He was taken off on a stretcher by paramedics.

The Varina defense, however, stepped up following Daniels’ exit, forcing a Hanover three-and-out. The Blue Devils only needed five plays after the Hanover punt to get on the scoreboard. The drive was high-

lighted by an 82-yard run by Varina running back C. J. Jones, who reached the 100-yard rushing mark with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Jones finished with 211 yards on 18 carries.

“When you play a lot of young people like we were forced to tonight, it’s a doubleedged sword,” Stoudt said. “On

the one hand, you’re playing inexperienced players. But on the other, you’re giving those players experience for the future.”

Sophomore Tyler Elrod took over running the Hanover offense after Cheatham was injured. Elrod found himself under intense pressure from the Blue Devils defense. He was

sacked once while completing eight of 21 passes for 61 yards.

Hanover struggled on the ground, too, gaining just 60 yards on 23 carries.

Despite the defeat, Stoudt praised the team’s character.

“We went through a lot adversity in this game,” Stoudt said. “But we kept fighting and the kids kept getting after it.”

I keep telling everyone, these two quarterbacks, the character of these guys and the way they embrace the challenge and stick up for each other … it’s a beautiful thing to witness.”

Gray noted that coming into the game, Henrico only allowed,

on average, 7.3 points per game and averaged 38 points per game on offense.

“That’s the challenge I put in front of the kids,” he said.

The win improves Atlee’s record to 3-4 this season and keeps the Raiders’ playoff hopes alive. However, the schedule doesn’t get any easier for them as they will travel to Patrick Henry Friday.

Suliman, Northcutt claim Milestat victories

By Dylan Garner Richmond Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – A poorly timed cramp was the last obstacle in Douglas Freeman senior Waleed Suliman’s way as he raced to the finish of the MileStat.com XC Invitational.

It wasn’t enough to stop the fastest race of his career – or the fastest cross country race by a Richmond high schooler.

With a time of 14:49, Suliman claimed school, course and all-time area records with a victory in the boys varsity ‘A’ race at Pole Green Park on Saturday morning.

“I came in with 15 meters to go, and I saw the clock, and I was like ‘Yes, I’m going to make it,’ ” he said. “It was amazing. I didn’t know what to do.”

Cosby sophomore Rachel Northcutt added a victory in the girls varsity ‘A’ race in 17:35, claiming back-to-back titles at the state’s largest invitational.

“It was exhilarating. ... It was kind of shocking. I was coming down the finish, and I was like, ‘I’m doing it again.’ ” Fifteen minutes has been a target for Suliman all season. With only two races (and two victories) for Suliman this season, coach Brian Reutinger wanted to make sure he approached the race aggressively.

According to Reutinger, he had “raced to win” in his previous efforts, but he wasn’t running away with victories to the degree he was capable of, which was the only way he was going to hit his goal Saturday.

“We race so few times that every time we race, we want him getting something out of it besides just winning,” Reutinger said. “So we prepped him over the course of the week to get out, be aggressive and be tough.”

The previous record by a Richmond-area high school runner in a 5K was by St. Christopher’s Charles Alexander at the 1981 Kinney Nationals in Orlando, Fla., finishing in 14:51.90.

Just more than two years ago, Suliman, now with an arguable claim to the title of the area’s all-

time greatest high school cross country runner, could barely speak English and had raw, untrained running ability.

Saturday was a proud moment for the senior, whose American journey continues to grow by the week.

“It’s absolutely awesome. Like I told you before, Richmond is now my new hometown, and I’m proud to make it a little better, faster. ... I’m proud it is my hometown,” Suliman said. “For records, I’m happy about it. I’m not gonna lie about that.”

In the girls race, Deep Run’s Lily Snow pushed the tempo early, leading Northcutt by a couple of steps by the first mile.

The Northcutt took over the lead by the time she reentered the course’s straightaway approaching the two-mile point. She fended off a trio of seniors, including Glen Allen’s Caroline Robelen, through the

end.

Last year’s victory, the first in her high school career, was on her mind as Northcutt made the last steps to the finish line, flourishing a wide smile.

She dedicated the race to her grandmother, who has been fighting lung cancer for the past three months. With the thought of her grandmother pushing her throughout the race, Northcutt is excited to tell her the result.

“She’s a motivation to me,” Northcutt said. “She’ll be very happy.”

In the team standings, Deep Run – led by Bashir MosavelLo’s fifth-place finish – finished runner-up in the boys race.

Cosby, led by Northcutt, placed third overall in the girls race.

Lee-Davis competed in the varsity ‘A’ races. The Confederate boys finished 13th and the Confederate girls finished 24th.

Jack Ikenberry was Lee-Davis’ best finisher, coming in 14th out of 295 runners in the boys ‘A’ race in 15:37. Desirae Horsley was the Confederates’ highest girls finisher with a 19:34 time.

Atlee’s boys finished second and Patrick Henry’s boys finished 24th in the varsity ‘B’ race.

The Raiders were led by Connor Moses (eighth place in 16:30) and Kameron Helmlinger (11th place in 16:37). Patrick Henry’s Noah Campbell finished 14th in 16:42.

Hanover’s girls finished 21st and Atlee’s girls finished 24th in their varsity ‘B’ race. Rachel Crytser led the Hawks with a 16th-place finish in 19:51. Laney Owen led the Raiders’ girls with a 21:22 finish. Hailey Draper led a small Patrick Henry contingent with a 22:31 finish.

HIGHLAND SPRINGS – Highland Springs was feeling its way early on offensively, but now the Springers seem to be feeling pretty good about the way things are going.

No. 4 Highland Springs rolled up 471 yards of offense, got three touchdowns from sophomore running back Shy’Re McKeiver, two touchdown passes from quarterback Juwan Carter and beat LeeDavis 49-21 on Friday.

The total could have been bigger had several plays not been negated by penalties in a game that included some chippiness.

Since an 8-7 upset loss to Meadowbrook, the Springers (6-1) have outscored their past four opponents 205-31.

“There was some immaturity early on,” said Highland Springs coach Loren Johnson, whose team had to replace several playmakers from last year’s state title team. “Guys understand what we need to do and what we need to do to be successful. Coaches, players, everybody had to manage things a little bit better. We kind of needed the loss to wake us up a little bit.”

Carter injured his knee in that game but hasn’t shown any lingering effects. He completed 13 of 20 passes for 196 yards, with touchdown passes to James Jackson and Isaiah Winstead.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – RandolphMacon’s women’s volleyball squad may be young, but the Yellow Jackets proved they were resilient when they hosted Washington & Lee in a battle of two squads who were undefeated in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

With less than an hour to go before the contest, former Hanover High School standout Miranda Hall took a ball to the head during warmups and was put on concussion protocol, forcing head coach Bill Rogers to change his lineup for the evening.

While the team got off to a slow start as the women adjusted to the changes, they soon found their footing and rolled to a 2125, 30-28, 25-20, 25-17 victory over the Generals in Crenshaw Gymnasium Wednesday night.

“We’ve been sick. … We’ve had two concussions this week.

We’ve had starters go out with ankles – and someone else steps up. It’s just next woman up,” Rogers said. “This is the most resilient team I’ve ever seen. Different players … find a way to make it happen. Taking Miranda out loses four points a set right off the bat, so someone’s got to step in and make up those four points.”
