Chamber issues rail resolution By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local

HANOVER — Finding common ground among the opposing views that surround the recent high-speed rail controversy isn’t easy, but a recent white paper released by the Hanover Chamber of Commerce outlining its position on the status of the project seems to contain talking points that both sides can embrace. In a resolution presented the Hanover County Board of Supervisors at last month’s meeting, Chamber executive director Melissa Miller read from the text of that document.: She said chamber members and local residents who could be potentially affected by the

proposed alternative western route “have raised many questions about these proposals, the Tier II Study as a whole, and the meaning of the high speed rail classification. And Hanover County, the Town of Ashland and our members have called for more information on possible routes and how these new or improved rails will be used. Miller said the resolution is the result of an extensive White Paper study conducted by the Chamber. In initial Department of Rail and Commerce documents, a red line was drawn through western Hanover outlining a possible western for the envisioned high speed rail line from Washington, D.C., to Richmond. Although freight service is not addressed in those initial studies, some Ashland residents contend the project is an effort to increase the amount of freight

MECHANICSVILLE — Virginia Cooperative Extension is hosting a family fun day from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 6) at the New Highland Baptist Church Farmer’s Market. A unique feature of this farmer’s market is that they honor Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Individuals that have SNAP can purchase fresh produce at New Highland Farmer’s Market to prepare healthy meals and move toward a healthier lifestyle. Money spent at farmer’s markets supports local farmers and the local economy. Additionally, purchasing your food directly from the producer allows you to inter-

act with those that are growing your produce, building a special trust that you can’t get at a grocery store. The day’s events will include a scavenger hunt for ingredients, cooking demos, and prizes. For more information, contact Laura Maxey-Nay at 804-752-4307 or lmaxey-nay@ vt.edu.

Documentary focuses on opiate addict ASHLAND — In an effort to educate the community on the growing epidemic of prescription drug and heroin abuse, the Ashland Police Department, Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office and the local offices of the FBI and DEA are offering a showing of the documentary, “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 11, at the Ashland Theater at 205 England St. in Ashland. This 45-minute documentary profiles the stories of several people who either abused opiates or had family members become addicts. The documentary also features interviews with medical and law enforcement professionals discussing the effects of the addiction, and how this epidemic is unlike any this country has seen before. “It is my hope that this event will raise awareness and provide those suffering with addiction, and their family and friends, with additional resources to combat drug use and get the help that these individuals so desperately need,” said Col. David R.

Hines, sheriff of Hanover County. “This epidemic does not discriminate; All across this country, it is taking good people from good homes and leading them down a trail that often ends in pain and sadness,” said FBI Director James Comey. “This film may be difficult to watch, but we hope it educates our students and young adults about the tragic GOODMAN consequences that come with abusing these drugs and that it will cause people to think twice before becoming its next victim.” “In addition to the toll on human life and devastation on families, we know that most of our property crime in the Town of Ashland has a direct nexus to opioid abuse,” said Chief Doug Goodman of the Ashland Police Department.

Although this documentary is targeted at educating high school and above students and young adults, all concerned members of the community are invited to attend this showing to further the dialogue on the issue. In addition to this viewing, community groups are encouraged to work with law enforcement to share this video with their neighborhood watch groups, civic organizations, faith circles, etc. The film also is available for free at www.fbi.gov/ ChasingTheDragon. Doors to the theater will open at 6 p.m. on July 11, with the documentary starting at 6:30 p.m. Law enforcement representatives will be available before and after the film to answer any questions and discuss ways we can continue this dialogue in our community. Parking is limited so plan accordingly. Information submitted by Officer Chip Watts, public information and community policing, Ashland Police Department.

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

This is the big week — let’s celebrate tomatoes With fingers crossed for good weather, and with the knowledge that the 2016 Hanover Tomato Festival is just days away, there’s a childlike excitement (no matter what your age) for the fun, food, entertainment and camaraderie of “the event” in Mechanicsville. A few weeks ago, the Town of Ashland and Randolph-Macon College joined forces with the Ashland Strawberry Faire Committee to once again fill the streets around the school with an outstanding day. You can expect the same on Saturday, July 9, at Pole Green Park. The Hanover Tomato Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — and there is literally something for everybody. (In the “I should avoid it category” is the funnel cake.) Of course, I’ll be getting some of those famous Robby Dodd Hanover Tomatoes for my mother. I’ve timed some vacation days in the past to take “our” tomato to friends in my hometown. Yes, they quickly became a favorite there too. The Hanover Tomato Festival Committee, with the help of the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department, continues to expand with activities. Once again, the festival will start with the Papa John’s 4K and Uncookoff competition. So, put on your running shoes and then go try the contestants’ entries in the Uncookoff. As usual, the Tomato Festival raises funds for the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department. I always think of the late Oscar Watson who was always so gracious an helpful. He was able to see a small event continue to grow under his leadership. While so many people volunteer their time and services to help make the Tomato Festival such a success, Oscar always comes to mind. He and the other committee members started planning the next event as soon as one wrapped up. And that tradition continues. Thank you to all involved in bringing this treasured event to our community. You say tomato — I say festival. See you Saturday on the grounds of Pole Green Park. Be sure to stop by our tent and say “hi.” Remember, the hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Melody Kinser

Advice to grads: Enjoy what’s ahead By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist To recent graduates: After endless pomp and ceremony, a seemingly infinite stream of parties and celebrations and a more than abundant amount of well intentioned advice for the future, I’ve decided to add my two cents on life after high school. Be advised that you have received ample warning, my words of wisdom are no more — and probably less — prolific than the meaningful words you’ve heard from others. Do what your parents tell you, and please consider their advice much more valuable

than mine. When I graduated from high school, there was an emerging philosophy that putting pressure on high school graduates was counter-productive, and selecting a career path could wait, sidelined for more important self-discovery. “You have to give them time to find themselves,” some disgruntled parent admitted. Back in those days, many graduates opted for some time off and a chance to discover the country they’d heard so much about. Taking off and heading to California in a well-decorated VW van almost seemed normal.

One of my closest friends packed a backpack and a bicycle and headed to Europe once he received his diploma. Cycling across Europe, he picked grapes in France and lived in a cave in the Greek Isles. He often told me the knowledge he gained in those short months of freedom from the norm supplied more wisdom than any education he’d experienced. About that time, a movie called “Endless Summer” provided the impetus for many more wandering souls to chase the sun on beaches in countries across the planet. see ADVICE, pg. 8

Thanks to deputies for respect at funeral As a resident of Mechanicsville, I wanted to write and let the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office know how proud I was of them today and every day for their faithful service to our community. In our busy lives I am afraid when we witness good deeds they are often left unsung, but today I witnessed an event that will forever stay in my heart and it involved Hanover County’s finest. My husband and I were returning home after running local errands and we passed by a local funeral home. The attendance at the funeral was clearly large and just as we turned onto the street where the folks were exiting the Hanover County Sheriff ’ Office kicked into gear. We were the first car to slow for the traffic coming out of the funeral home. One of the deputies escorting the procession immediately stopped the traffic for all members of the funeral entourage to pass. As the hearse went by, the deputy formally saluted the hearse, and, as it passed by our car, we realized a veteran was in the hearse. As a daughter of a Korean War veteran, I would like to thank the deputy that gave an appropriate honor when he saluted the hearse that carried the flag-draped coffin. In this crazy busy world of ours, it is so refreshing to see something so appropriate and fitting delivered by one of our county’s finest. I would like to personally thank the officer and the

other officers in attendance for their service to our community. God bless each and every one of you and thank you for what you all do every day and night for the folks that are lucky enough to call Mechanicsville home. Rebecca Cumins Mechanicsville

While the instructor was “instructing” us how to get into the kayak, my chin was already quivering (because I was frightened!). My husband, on the other hand, seemed eager to try something new and exciting. I didn’t want to disappoint our daughter, who actually, like myself, believed I’ve become more adventurous in my old age. (Not!) At first it seemed enjoyable. However, when we hit the last rapids, I saw I was headed for a huge rock. I tried to avoid it, but when I failed, an instructor said, “This is not good!” I felt safe with him, until my kayak, my paddle, and I were each in different places. With a helmet, life vest, and wet suit, I still went under several times. My husband, who’d

During his address to the seniors, Dr. John Wheeler, principal, asked the seniors who were going into the military after graduation to stand and be acknowledged. That touched my heart in a big way. Other than watching my granddaughter walk the stage and receive her diploma, acknowledging the seniors headed for the military was the most precious part of the event. Several seniors stood and the crowd broke out in a standing ovation. I am humbled to know that Atlee has a principal who recognizes the importance of the sacrifice these kids will make after entering the military, putting their lives in jeopardy to protect our freedoms and this great country. I am a proud and grateful daughter of a U.S. Navy World War II (Atlantic and Pacific) veteran, wife of a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and motherin-law of an active duty Army Reservist. I have a heart for veterans. I also am a member of the VFW Battlefield Post 9808 Auxiliary. Our mission is to help veterans and their families in any way we can.

ed kids then or now for that matter? But, it’s become apparent to me that the need for adventure, excitement and newness still burns in many youths today. Now, I’m not suggesting that you purchase a surfboard and head to Venezuela looking for that wave, but I am expressing a belief that everyone needs an adventure at some point in their lives. That adventure can come in a variety of forums, so make yours unique and inspiring and make sure it’s designed to fit the needs of one individual: you.

So, that’s my tiny tidbit of wisdom for graduates, young and old. I pre-warned you it was not as timely or practical as many of the other tips you’ve received during the graduation season. And one more thing: As for not choosing a career path early, I’m opposed. Find something you love to do and pursue a career in an associated field. The sooner you know where you are going, the sooner you will arrive. And, finally, don’t take any wooden nickels.

It is my honor to say thank you to Dr. Wheeler for his patriotism. In liberty because of the veterans, grandmother of an AHS graduated senior, Donna Bissey Mechanicsville

If I get behind the right 18-wheeler on 360 heading back to Old Church, I save fuel by knocking 15 minutes off my engine run time. The saying, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere,” means a lot more now that I get home faster. Anyway, supervisors, this is the kind of supervising we want. You may want to consider working closer with Chesterfield, Richmond and Henrico counties to get all our businesses, parks and other gathering places moved into those counties. What a great idea, all Hanoverians could overcrowd those counties by going there to shop, eat and play and afterwards come back to good ol’ Hanover’s wide open spaces to play with their grazing chickens, hum along with honey bees, and watch tomatoes grow. Hanoverians could truly be living in Utopia -- no more crowds, no more traffic, just enjoying the quietness and serenity of the neighborhood while having a good mint julep. What more could we ask for, knowing that our only exports are Town House chicken eggs, fresh subdivision bee’s honey and Hanover Tomatoes, all being made just blocks or a

Helping taxpayers I hope the Hanover County Board of Supervisors reads this paper as this may be the first and only time they hear me brag on them for something they’ve done that’s having positive results for the Hanover taxpayers. I’m talking about the lack of traffic on the roadways. I don’t know how those guys/ladies did it but thank God for small miracles. I think it began at 7:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, as I noticed the roads were clear, no traffic and smooth sailing, all the way from Old Church to Ellerson. The roads were at least 20 mph faster with no back up on Pole Green and no long lines at red lights on U.S. 360. Not only have you guys helped get us to work faster, you also are doing your part in cleaning up the environment by keeping us moving and not idling our fuel away with stop and go driving.

Hostetter was among those who arrived in Lexington on June 25. After pledging to speak French exclusively, he and the other students are eating, sleeping, and breathing francais. The students will learn, not in the ordinary way with textbooks and CDs, but by really using the language in the cafeteria, in the dorm, on the soccer field, as well as in the classroom. Academy participants attend creative classes such as French current events, the Francophone Americas, Phonetics, Poetry, and the Culture of Switzerland, Morocco, and Congo each morning, including Saturdays,

The evening will include a light dinner of all-American hot dogs and fixings, with music being performed by the Ronnie and Steve Band. This event is free and open to the public, however, seating is limited. RSVP by calling 804-746-7370. Heritage Green, which is undergoing an expansion

to encourage them to take an active part in their learning. The language immersion exceeds beyond the classroom with afternoon activities such as cooking, sports, and visual and performing arts. Students’ writing and photography skills are developed through journals, blog entries, a digital yearbook, videos, weekly newspapers, and a radio broadcast. Hostetter has completed four years of French and plans to take French V as a senior next year. His high school French teacher is Mitchell Hayes. Joanne Hostetter, Jordan’s mother, said a unique aspect of his background that enhanced his qualifications is the fact that they hosted three different French students through

the Compass USA program for three weeks per students for three summers. “The last student we hosted was from Marseille and we struck up a friendship with his family that resulted in an invitation to visit them,” she added. Last July, the Hostetter family spent eight days in Marseille with the Istria family. They celebrated Bastille Day, enjoyed excursions on the Mediterranean on their hosts’ boat, had a day trip to the French Riviera, and visited ancient forts and cathedrals. The Hostetters also toured Paris, including the Louvre, Musee Dorsay, Notre Dame, St. Chappelle, the Luxembourg Gardens, a riverboat cruise on the Seine and a day trip to Versailles.

and his recent letter, I don’t think the country is divided between banning all guns and having everyone carry them. That is simply a perception created by extremists who shout much louder than anyone else. I hope reasonable people are wondering why children and mentally ill people such as Omar Mateen and Adam Lanza have easy access to high-capacity weapons that can kill 49 people and wound 53 others in a matter of minutes. I also hope these same reasonable people will seek reasonable solutions and ignore the shouters who muddy the debate. Scott Bateman Mechanicsville

Miller named ‘Treasurer of the Year’ for second time

M. SCOTT MILLER

HANOVER — The Treasurers’ Association of Virginia has named M. Scott Miller, Hanover County’s Treasurer since 1996, as its “Treasurer of the Year.” This is the second time Miller has received the association’s most prestigious annual award. Miller was recognized for his years of continued service to the association and his creative leadership on a number of committees. Currently the chair of

the Richmond District of the Treasurer’s Association, he just completed a twoyear term as chair of the Continuing Education Committee and also served on the legislative and awards committees. He also is the chair of the association’s finance review committee and is involved in two special projects: working with State Treasurer Manju Ganeriwala on Local Government Investment Pool regulations and studying ways

to make the dog licensing process more citizen-friendly as well as efficient for local governments. Miller said he was surprised at receiving the award, which he also won in 2004. “I’m honored and humbled,” he said. “We have a lot of folks working hard at our organizational level, on our Legislative committee and on education and training opportunities. To be recognized for all of the things we’ve been doing the past year is quite an

honor.” Miller has served as president of the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia in 2005-2006. The Treasurer’s Association includes all elected county and city treasurers in the Commonwealth as well as numerous unelected town treasurers. Miller attained the title of “Master Governmental Treasurer” from the Weldon Cooper Center of the University of Virginia in

2000. “Master Governmental Treasurer” is the highest level of training and education available for local treasurers. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Virginia Tech and has over 35 years of financial and government experience. Miller has been re-elected five times. Tammy Billups of Mechanicsville Jazzercise at the Cool Spring Recreation Center said she recently went on vacation for two weeks. She had left her staff, which she calls her “Krew,” to handle classes in her absence. While vacationing in South Carolina, she learned that the recreation center was still without electricity. Robby Dodd of Dodd’s Acres Farm will continue the tradition of providing the tomatoes for the festival. He has been supplying 200 bushels of tomatoes since 1978. Proceeds from the sale of the tomatoes support the Black Creek VFD. Sager calls the festival “a constant. People in Hanover can depend on the festival being here in Hanover.” He also said the event “has the feel of a down-home family reunion.” The late Oscar Watson, along with the Black Creek VFD, brought the festival to life in 1978. That first year attracted 300 people and one food vendor. Mother Nature sometimes attempts to put a damper on the day (like last year’s sudden downpour), but it doesn’t impact the enthusiasm for a Mechanicsville tradition. “Regardless of the weather, we know that everything that truly makes the Tomato Festival special will be in place,” Sager said. So, whether it’s 90 degrees and sunny or we experience some refreshing

summertime showers, come on out and enjoy the fun!” After the incredible turnout in 2009, the Tomato Festival Committee and Parks & Rec coordinated with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office to ease any traffic tie-ups entering or exiting the park. A new plan was implemented in 2010 and has proven effective for motorists. Without a doubt, the spotlight is on the Hanover Tomato, but you’ll also find food, merchandise and live entertainment. The stage is again being provided by the E.J. Wade Foundation. To ensure traffic flow remains issuefree, Lt. Kenny Epling of the Sheriff ’s Office supervises deputies at points of entry and exit. Thanks to the Sheriff ’s Office’s efforts, in conjunction with the committee and Parks & Rec, the delays have practically disappeared. Epling makes sure that there are enough officers onsite to avoid any delays. He previously said that the Sheriff ’s Office’s role is “strictly traffic control and security

within the park.” He said Parks & Rec is responsible for parking and exiting. Festival-goers also should keep in mind the possibility of extreme heat, as well as the risks associated with exposure. When there is heavy humidity and high heat, people may develop symptoms of heat exhaustion and early heat exhaustion. The best remedy to avoid dehydration is to stay hydrated and watch for symptoms, including weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle aches and excessive sweating. Hanover Fire-EMS always has a strong presence at the festival for those with any health concerns or questions. Two festival events will be held Friday evening at Pole Green Park. Papa John’s 4K Pizza Run starts at 6 p.m. and the Tomato Uncookoff runs from 6 to 8 p.m. The Uncookoff showcases local tomato creations to sample, such as bruschetta, salsa and pizza sauces. Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization that conducts bi-annual charter bus trips to our national memorials in Washington, D.C. The Center Players ease on down the road with ‘The Wiz’

Jim Ridolphi for The Local

At left, nearly 50 students from Atlee, Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry high schools; Liberty and Stonewall Jackson middle schools; and Gandy and Henry Clay elementary schools were “off to see the wizard” as members of the cast of the musical, “The Wiz.” The musical was presented by the Center Players with the Hanover Arts and Activities Center and Hanover Tavern. Above, as the Cowardly Lion makes his entrance, the Scarecrow (Sloan Minor), The Tin Man (Takir McClain) and Dorothy (Kendall Wilkinson) huddle in fear.

Hanover teams claim Little League titles By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover County Little League teams have had a prolific postseason in the Virginia District 5 baseball championship tournaments this week, taking three of six district titles. Atlee Little League won both the 9-10 and Intermediate titles, while Ashland Little League’s Junior team won its championship. Tuckahoe Little League won the Majors tournament title. Chesterfield Little League claiming the Big League title and Central Chesterfield claimed the Senior baseball title. Only the 9-10 baseball title remains undecided, with just two teams – Tuckahoe American and Tuckahoe National – vying for the championship banner at the Mechanicsville Little League complex in a game or games scheduled after this edition went to press. Ashland Little League was the first county team to claim a title in the District 5 baseball tournaments. The Ashland juniors rolled to a 12-2 victory over Chesterfield in the third game of the two-team series at Mechanicsville Little League. Ashland won the first game 6-5 on June 25 on a wild pitch that came on what would have been the fourth ball of an intentional walk to load the bases.

Atlee’s Jack Bowles drives in three runs with a triple in the fourth inning of Atlee’s 12-9 victory over Tuckahoe Little League in the championship game of the Virginia Little League District 5 10-11 tournament at Mechanicsville Little League Friday.

“I alerted our runner at third base that the [Chesterfield] pitcher is a little wild – to get ready to run,” said Ashland manager Mike Michalowicz. “He did and scored on that.” Ashland out-hit Chesterfield the second game, but substitu-

tions to give some starters a rest weakened the defense and allowed the Southside team to get ahead. In the third game, everyone who needed rest had it. Pitcher Tristan Sheldon felt he had it in him to lead Ashland to victory,

so he asked Michalowicz for the ball and the manager let him have it. Michalowicz was not disappointed. “He was cool as a cucumber the whole game,” Michalowicz said. “He went the distance,

with 89 pitches. I knew from the night before that he was the guy I wanted on the mound, and he took us to the promised land.” Jack Pendleton led the Ashland offense by going 3-

Burkwood wins numbers game in GRAL meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Hungary Creek may have had the faster individual swimmers, but Burkwood had more fast individual swimmers, particularly in the novice and advanced divisions, and that numerical advantage allowed the Buccaneers to eke out a victory over visiting Hungary Creek in a Greater Richmond Aquatic League swim meet at Burkwood Wednesday night. “It’s a numbers game. You have to have enough to fill the lanes,” said Burkwood head swim coach Karen Seeber. “We had some strong performances tonight. We had over 102 time drops. … It’s real nice. [The swimmers] have been working real hard. We now have 46 qualified for Champs.” The win, by about 100 points, is Burkwood’s second victory in three weeks of regular-season swimming. Even though they didn’t win, the Marlins had a successful night as well, said Hungary Creek head coach Mollie Pawlowski. “We’re getting faster. A lot of kids are working hard,” Pawlowski said. Despite the Marlins’ greater numbers overall, more than 220 swimmers to Burkwood’s 180, demographics has been dulling Hungary Creek’s numerical

Big inning propels Mechanicsville past Post 201 By Billy Fellin Richmond Suburban News POWHATAN – A common theme for Powhatan Post 201’s season this year has been giving up one big inning. Mechanicsville Post 175 was all too happy to continue this trend. Boosted by a six-run fifth inning and the dominant pitching of Tyler Morgan, Post 175 defeated Post 201 8-1 on the road. “We strung a few hits together,” Mechanicsville assistant coach Tyler Kane said. “This team is very solid one through nine. We pride ourselves on getting the big hits when we need it and that’s really what helped us go out there and scratch a few runs that inning.” Powhatan 201’s James Heldmann had been holding Mechanicsville relatively at bay on the mound, allowing just four hits through the first four innings. Mechanicsville’s Hayden Moore knocked in the first run of the game for Post 175 in the top of the fourth inning. Brandon Crosby had gotten a two-out single, and then

a single. Both were brought home by another Moore single to make it 7-0. Mechanicsville would get its eighth run in the top of the sixth inning, after Foster reached after being hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI single by Austin Morris. Morgan’s pitching was lights out on the night. He struck out nine 201 batters and allowed just one run on one hit in six innings of work. “I was just doing my things,” Morgan said. “My pitches were working and I was letting them have it.” The future Longwood Lancer has been working on coming into his own as a starting pitching, with his time with 175 being invaluable for that experience. “When you’re starting, you have control of the game,” he said. “Say it’s a close game and you come in to relieve, that Billy Fellin/Powhatan Today pressure is on you. Tuckahoe built a commanding lead with a six-run second inning, but Atlee was unfazed, its offense scoring steadily throughout the rest of the game to earn a 12-9 victory as well as the 10-11 title. “I knew it was going to be a battle from the start,” said Atlee manager Jamie Sanford. “That Tuckahoe team, they’ve been

Cole Elrod led off with a double. Anthony Gabello reached on an error, and Nolan Williamson singled. Hayden Rollinson reached on an outfield error that allowed Elrod and Gabello to score. One out later Gunnar Stomberg loaded

the bases with another outfield error, then Jack Bowles – one of the shortest players on the team, cleared the bases with a huge triple to right field. “Jack Bowles is a competitor,” Sanford said. “Never count him out.” Atlee begins its state tournament in Honaker on July 14.
