HANOVER — Finding common ground among the opposing views that surround the recent high-speed rail controversy isn’t easy, but a recent white paper released by the Hanover Chamber of Commerce outlining its position on the status of the project seems to contain talking points that both sides can embrace. In a resolution presented the Hanover County Board of Supervisors at last month’s meeting, Chamber executive director Melissa Miller read from the text of that document.: She said chamber members and local residents who could be potentially affected by the
proposed alternative western route “have raised many questions about these proposals, the Tier II Study as a whole, and the meaning of the high speed rail classification. And Hanover County, the Town of Ashland and our members have called for more information on possible routes and how these new or improved rails will be used.� Miller said the resolution is the result of an extensive White Paper study conducted by the Chamber. In initial Department of Rail and Commerce documents, a red line was drawn through western Hanover outlining a possible western for the envisioned high speed rail line from Washington, D.C., to Richmond. Although freight service is not addressed in those initial studies, some Ashland residents contend the project is an effort to increase the amount of freight

Growth has been the word since, with the festival first moving to the grounds of Battlefield Park Elementary School and then settling in at Pole Green Park. Greg Sager, director of the Hanover County Parks and Recreation
Department, spearheads operations with the Hanover Tomato Festival Committee. The 2016 festival will get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday and run until 4 p.m. at Pole Green Park at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville.
