Homes for Our Troops, R-CI partner for soldier By Rachel Lindsey for The Mechanicsville Local
Melody Kinser/The Local
Isaiah Hannah Childers, center, offers a salute to show his military spirit at the July Community Breakfast sponsored by American Legion Post 175 in Mechanicsville. He has become a familiar face at the breakfast since becoming friends with Richard “Dick” Bowen, left, a member of the Post. The two met at a fast food restaurant and struck up an immediate bond, with service to country a big part of their conversations. Isaiah, who suffers from Alopecia, is a favorite among the Post members. They bring him special gifts that often have a military theme. Also shown is Isaiah’s mother, Lori. For more on the special friendship Bowen and Isaiah share, turn to page 4.
MECHANICSVILLE — The nonprofit Homes for Our Troops held a Community Kickoff event on Saturday, Aug. 20, signifying the start of the build process for a specially adapted home for Army Sgt. James “JP” McGuire. R-CI Builders is the official build partner for the project. McGuire was injured while serving his second tour in Iraq. On Dec. 13, 2007, McGuire was serving as a combat engineer on foot patrol in Tunis, Iraq. While walking through the sand, he noticed copper wire. One of the soldiers didn’t see the wire, so McGuire pushed him out of the way. In doing so, McGuire stepped on the pressure plate of an improvised explosive device (IED). As a result, his right leg had to be amputated above the knee, halfway up to the thigh. A close friend also was killed in a secondary blast that day, dying in Sgt. McGuire’s arms. For his actions that day, McGuire received the Purple Heart. He also was awarded a Bronze Star with Valor. “So many people have told me I’m a hero,” McGuire said, “but I was just doing my job.”

HCSO: Hostage type situation ends peacefully at local home Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office deployed its SWAT team and crisis negotiators Sunday evening in response to what had been reported as a domestic situation in the
8300 block of Orchard Lane in Mechanicsville. Sgt. James R. Cooper, speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, said officers arrived t the scene around 6:30 p.m. While they were en route, it was learned that a male subject was making threatening statements and was possibly armed with a firearm.
“Once deputies arrived on scene they were able to safely get the other occupants out of the house,” Cooper said. “Due to the belief the subject inside the residence was armed, the Sheriff ’s Office deployed the SWAT team and our Crisis Negotiators,” he added.
“Once on scene, negotiators were able to establish communication with the male subject.” After communication was established, the sergeant said the subject agreed to exit the residence and was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation.

ANOVER – “The Parsons’ Cause – Prelude to Revolution” will be presented by the Parsons’ Cause Foundation Inc. at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Historic Hanover Courthouse at 13182 Hanover Courthouse Rd. in Hanover. According to the Foundation’s website, http://www.parsonscause.org/the-2016-shows. html, “On December 1, 1763, a country law-
yer from Hanover stepped from obscurity into the forefront of legal and political circles in Virginia. His name was Patrick Henry. The event that shaped his destiny was the trial of The Parsons’ Cause. Henry challenged the two most potent entities of colonial Virginia — the King and the clergy. The case proved to be one of the opening salvos of the revolution, and started Henry on the path of becoming the ‘Voice of the Revolution.’ ” For more information, visit the website at www.parsonscause.org.

L-DHS to hold Post 175 veterans welcome boy as honorary American Legion member event for freshmen By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
M
ECHANICSVILLE — That smile never seems to leave his young face – and he obviously enjoys the camaraderie he has found as a regular at the monthly breakfast of American Legion Post 175. As a matter of fact, the veterans have pretty much adopted Isaiah Hannah Childers, as one of their own. First impressions, however, can be deceiving. The boy with the broad grin is bald, which makes one first think he must be undergoing chemotherapy. Wrong. The 6½-year-old son of Kent and Lori Childers suffers from Alopecia, an auto-immune condition that makes his body attack his hair follicles, causing him

to be bald. A rising first grader at Cool Spring Elementary School, Isaiah first became acquainted with Richard “Dick” Bowen of Post 175 at a fast food restaurant. The two started talking while ordering their food. After they sat down to eat, Bowen asked Kent to show him photos of the USS Wisconsin, where he served. Isaiah wanted to show his new friend the photos and they continue to talk.

Bowen invited Isaiah to breakfast at the Post and the Childers family has made it a tradition. As Isaiah prepared to leave the restaurant during that first encounter, he said goodbye to Bowen and then saluted the veteran. This is a frequent occurrence between the two. At the July breakfast, Isaiah was surrounded by military memorabilia that veterans throughout the Post bring to him. The youngster said he looks forward to seeing Bowen every month at the Community Breakfast. Isaiah will probably be out Saturday when Post 175 sponsors the breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at 8700 Bell Creek Rd. in Mechanicsville. And, if you salute, chances are he will return the gesture.

In some cases, you make lemonade
From the editor
We’re approaching a very scary election As Nov. 8 draws ever closer, there’s a frightening rumble moving across the country. Some say it’s a scenario of the lesser of two evils when talking about the presidential candidates. To the amazement of many, Donald Trump blew right past the opposition in his quest for the Republican nomination. (Pause and take a deep breath.) OK, here’s a wealthy man who has never held any public office and he’s seeking the most important one in the world. This had led me to believe that — since I have no qualifications — I should seek public office after I give up the newspaper life. Actually, having covered countless governmental meetings through the years, I may have a few qualifications. That still may be more than The Donald. What is the appeal of someone who rants and insults and demeans and infuriates? Where are the solutions to the issues? Trump hit an all-time low when he ridiculed a physically challenged man. Sure, it’s easy to be the bully — but what about creating jobs and welcoming all who wish to call the United States home? Am I saying that Hillary Clinton is the answer to our nation’s woes? No — but at least she brings a lengthy political resume to her campaign. Is she under scrutiny for emails and Benghazi? Yes, we know she is. A wise move on her part was selecting Virginia’s own Tim Kaine as her running mate. Unlike most of us, I doubt there are any skeletons in his closet. And, be honest, how many of you had ever heard of Mike Pence? Ted Cruz, Newt Gingrich, Paul Ryan, Mario Rubio — those are just a few of the “known” GOP leaders who are household names. If you favor building a fence/wall to keep Mexicans out of our country, don’t tell me because I don’t want to know you. And don’t even get me started on deporting Muslims. For the record, I’m a born-again Christian. I’ll close with this by Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Those words are on the Statue of Liberty and still hold true. Let’s keep it that way. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist The child chuckled only slightly, hardly discernible from the father’s position across the room, but just close enough for him to hear. It was a televised public service announcement for a support group consisting of people who stutter, and the man representing the small group was having plenty of difficulty getting his message across to the patient host. “I want to tell you a story about a little boy,” the father said to the uninterested room. He told a tale of a small boy who remembered a day when he began to struggle with what seems to most like the simplest of tasks: speaking.
It was as distinctive a recollection as any in his childhood, and was patiently stored in a memory bank that included that first ride on a two-wheel bicycle, or that first Little League game. He told them of a kid who spent most of his first years in school afraid and trembling at the thought of being called on in class; a kid who repeatedly was placed in remedial reading not for an inability to understand the material, but for not being able to shape the words that confirmed that knowledge. The stuttering became a major part of this child’s life, requiring him to devise ingenious plans to avoid public speaking in any form. The telephone became an enemy that stalked
the youngster in his own home. As relatives called and spoke to every member of the family, this youth felt an anxiety that only increased as each speaker finished their flawless conversations and his turn arrived. “Did the boy not know what he wanted to say?” one of the children asked. I assured them he did. After years of cruel remarks and insults, endless oral book reports that resulted in anxiety almost indescribable, the boy learned to cope. He used every trick in the book to cover his interrupted speech, and only those who knew him best were aware of the daily struggle. His girlfriends ordered food at restaurants and carry-outs, and his sister see LEMONADE, pg. 8
LETTERS | Reader Views
Political campaign yard signs being stolen and defaced I was asked to write a letter concerning political yard signs being stolen and defaced here in the community. I do not write this as a Trump supporter, and I do not write this as a Clinton supporter. Instead, I write this letter as a supporter of free speech. It’s an annual problem across the country as we hold elections for many different offices each year. Of course, this year we are in the midst of a presidential election that will see a high turnout of voters. See, in our great country, we have the liberty to demonstrate our freedom of speech in various ways, one of which is displaying a campaign sign in our yards. Unfortunately, there are those who attempt to censor this display of free speech by either stealing or defacing a campaign sign that does not belong to them. Both of which are illicit acts. Those who do steal campaign signs are people who are so immature and close-minded against an opposing set of beliefs to theirs that they must attempt to censor someone else’s views and freedom. I encourage our community to condemn those who steal displays of freedom of speech, regardless of our friends and neighbors’ political affiliations.
This is not about Democrats and Republicans. This is about being for free speech and being against theft. And if you do experience theft of your campaign sign, I encourage you to be more inspired to go out and vote for your candidate! Do not let others keep you silenced because of their immaturity and selfishness. Contact the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office for any experience or witness to a campaign sign being wrongfully taken or vandalized. The Sheriff ’s Office phone number is 804-365-6110. Planning Department wins award from VACo HANOVER — The Hanover County Department of Planning has received a 2016 Virginia Association of Counties’ (VACo) Achievement Award for its Strategic Zoning Initiative. The Strategic Zoning Initiatives incentivizes property owners with land holdings in areas designated for commercial and industrial development to rezone for speculative commercial or industrial purposes, while deferring many of the costs normally associated with rezoning to later in the land development process. Implementation of this process change has resulted in rezoning approximately 213 acres of land located in prime economic development corridors. I said. He picked up a telephone and ignored the predictable laugh on the other end of the line that always followed a verbal stumble on his part. Like numerous stutterers who preceded him, he learned that an inability to talk was in no way related to an inability to think. The boy, now a man, learned that most people are compassionate human beings, and only a misguided few judge a person by how they look, talk or worship. As the years passed, the stuttering only made brief, but still uncomfortable appearanc-
es in the boy’s life. Oddly, the man embraced the affliction and was almost thankful for the role it played in shaping his life. Somehow, all the physical trips taken in order to avoid a phone call, the countless missed opportunities and the numerous frustrations seemed almost worth it. “Does the man talk now?” another child asked. “Oh, yes. He speaks to everyone, orders his own food and uses a phone without hesitation,” I answered. “And some of the people who are the closest to him don’t even know he stutters.
More importantly, he doesn’t care about the ones who still chuckle at his momentary lapses.” The father explained that the boy no longer remembers the faces of the countless kids who laughed, the adults who equated a speech impediment with stupidity or the fools who openly expressed their distaste at his inability to speak. He remembers the friends and family who supported and loved him, and never stopped talking to him even if some of those conversations took longer than normal. “But, not the ones who laughed,” the child said.

Council OKs CUP for Penske sales, leasing site By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Penske Truck Leasing LLC has been approved for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) by Ashland Town Council for the construction of a Penske Truck Services on South Hill Carter Parkway. The action took place at council’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Earlier this month, the Ashland Planning Commission recomAMOS mended approval of the CUP to town council under eight conditions the planners said needed
to be met. Located on South Hill Carter Parkway near Junction Drive, the company’s intentions for the site are to construct and operate a business for Penske truck sales and leasing. Nora Amos, director of Planning and Community Development, said the building would serve as a private fueling station. The future land use designation for this portion of land is office/industrial, with smaller portions being commercial. “We feel that it’s compatible with the future land use map. It fits under the commercial/business district as well as industrial; it’s maintaining an existing business and expanding its use as well as highlighting the existing transportation infrastructure that’s in place,” Amos said.

ONTPELIER — As leases are being signed, and the rest of Montpelier continues to grow, the old-style values that make the small rural community unique are standing their ground. Among those familiar “faces” is the Montpelier Pharmacy, which has been providing pharmaceutical services in the area for decades. Dan Hamilton, the original owner, first opened the business in 1962. He passed away after battling cancer. The site at 17128 Mountain Rd. (Route 33) in Montpelier has been the sole location of the pharmacy since its founding. No other

In addition, the caller ID number used by this scam is a legitimate Virginia State Police Area Office phone number. She also said it is a mitigating impact to the Sedgefield neighborhood, and that was one of the items in particular they looked at when analyzing this CUP to assure it would be buffered from noise, lighting, or any other negative affect that could come from this use. Council agreed with the Planning Commission’s eight recommended conditions that are now required of the company since being issued its CUP.
In the conditions, it states that inoperable vehicles being serviced may only be allowed to remain on the property for no longer than a 60-day period. Amos added there would be “a maximum of 10 inoperable vehicles allowed on the property. Any signage must be monument style and must conform with town standards. If a wash station is to be built, it must be built indoors and must be drained into a sanitary sewer system rather than the storm water sewer system. The conditions also state that the private fueling station
may only serve Penske-owned vehicles; the owners of the business must be in compliance with all laws; the business must make its record system viewable to the Town of Ashland; and the applicant must participate as necessary in the recordation of this CUP with the Hanover County Circuit Court. The last condition, which was added to the list after the last Planning Commission meeting, said there is to be no overnight idling of vehicles. Vice Mayor James Murray asked, “Is overnight an adequate definition if someone
decides they’re going to stop from 2 to 4 a.m.? Would that still be considered overnight? A note was added to Council’s motion to include that “overnight would be defined as 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. The vote for the CUP for Penske was unanimous. In other business, Police Chief Doug Goodman followed up on the Thompson Street speed limit reduction that was addressed at the first meeting of the month. He said most of what was discussed was the police department essentially sharing citizen concerns.

Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free or reduced price meals for their children. Applications also are available at the principal’s office in each school and at the central office. To apply for free or reduced price meals, households must only fill out one application per household and return it to the school division. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. The information households provide on the application will be used for determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. For school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced price benefits, households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) only have to list their child(ren)’s name and SNAP or TANF case number and an adult household member must sign the application. Households who do not list a SNAP or TANF case number, including WIC households, must list the names of all household members, the amount and frequency of the income received by each household member, and the last four digits of the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. If the household member does not have a social security number, the household member must indicate that a social security number is not available. The application must be signed by an adult household member in order to be approved. Under the provisions of the free and reduced price meal policy, Adam Russo (director of Food Services),

ASHLAND — Hanover County Public Schools has announced its policy for providing free or reduced price meals for children served under the National School Lunch, and/or School Breakfast Programs. Each school and/or central school nutrition office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. Household size and income will be used to determine eligibility for free or reduced price meal benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines, shown below, may be eligible for either free or reduced price meals. Children who are members of households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may be automatically eligible for free meals. Children who are homeless, migrant, or runaway may also be automatically eligible for free meals. Foster children, who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court, are eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. Children who are members of households participating in WIC also may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals based on the household’s income. The chart by which meals are determined is based on household size, maximum household income for free meals, and household income for reduced price meals. 1— $15,444; $15,444.01 to $21,978. 2— $20,826; $20,827.01 to $29,637. 3— $26,208; $26,208.01 to $37,296. 4— $31,590; $31,509.01 to $44,955. 5— $36,972; $36,972.01 to $52,614. 6— $42,354; $42,354.01 to $60,273. 7— $47,749; $47,749.01 to $67,951. 8— $53,157; $53,157.01 to $75,647. This is known as “spoofing” and enables the caller to disguise his true identity. Spoofing is often used as part of an attempt to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity or sold
illegally. U.S. law and FCC rules prohibit most types of spoofing. The IRS phone scam is common and often preys on senior citizens. One individual reported to State Police Wednesday (Aug. 17) that she had just sent the caller $2,000 in gift cards. Just last week the Fredericksburg Police
Department reported a 72year-old resident was targeted and scammed out of more than $12,000. Common characteristics of the IRS Phone Scam are as follows: Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves. Scammers may be able
to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security number. Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls. Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site. After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers
hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do: If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1-800829-1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a
payment issue – if there really is such an issue. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800see SCAM, pg. 21

Some voicemail services are preset to allow access if you call in from your own phone number. A hacker could spoof your home phone number and gain access to your voicemail if you do not set a password. Information submitted by Corinne N. Sept. 2 deadline set to enter some fair competitions Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com DOSWELL — Stop dreaming of becoming a blue-ribbon winner, and make it happen. You have two more weeks to enter the State Fair of Virginia arts & crafts and horticulture competitions. Last year 2,500 participants submitted more than 8,000 entries. This year there are more than 2,300 classes — 400 of them in the adult Arts & Crafts division. Whether it’s yard art, fancy woodworking or a detailed pen-and-ink drawing, there’s a category for just about everybody. If you think you have what it takes, then enter by the Friday, Sept. 2, deadline. The competitions are open to adults and youth, so you could even make it a family project. “These competitions are an opportunity to let individual talents shine,” said Stuart Sanders, educational programs coordinator at The Meadow Event Park, where the fair is held. “And with over 200 individual scholarships offered, there are multiple opportunities to earn funds
for further education.” New categories include doll quilts, pin cushions, postcards and miniature rooms or scenes. And if you have a bunch of corks lying around,

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Q. Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Lucky, 449582, is a 2-year-old female spayed pit bull. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Lucky was surrendered to the shelter in late July. She has been spayed already. Lucky has a lot of playful energy and loves to run. She seems to do well with other dogs with which she comes into contact. Lucky might do best with an owner who likes to stay active. Missy, 451319, is a 2-year-old female Turkish Van feline. She has had her first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Missy was surrendered earlier last week. Sadly, her owner passed away. Missy is a sweet house cat who is very social. She is well litter trained and clean. She will make a great indoor only cat. For more information on this great pet, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http:// hanovercounty.gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.

Domenech holds off Whitehouse for win By Brad Bess Richmond Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – Diana Domenech had a stellar week of golf. The rising Mills Godwin junior posted a 36-hole even par 144 to win medalist honors at the 16-team Independence High School Invitational on Wednesday. On Thursday, she finished 18-holes at Magnolia Green with an even-par 72 for co-medalist honors in a quadmatch with James River, Cosby and Chantilly. On Friday, she finished what she had started a week prior, winning the 18-hole girl’s mini regional sponsored by Hanover High School at Hanover Country Club. The girl’s miniregional is an 18-hole tournament in which players played nine holes at Queenfield Golf Club on Aug. 12, then finished on the front nine of Hanover Country Club Friday. Domenech entered the final round with a two-stroke lead and shot a 1-under 34 to compile a 1-under 70 for the tournament. Atlee senior Erica Whitehouse finished second with 74, and Patrick Henry freshman Jessica Rathbone finished third with 78. Hanover’s Bella Seip finished sixth with 94. “I try to just come out here and just have fun and just try my best,” Domenech said. “Today it

It helps her to focus and lock in on a few holes at a time, as opposed to thinking of the nine-hole round or the 18-hole tournament. “Instead of thinking it’s an 18-hole tournament, I just played it as two individual ninehole (rounds). And I just cut those in half, so I’ll be like, ‘OK, you’re done with five, you have four holes left. Just try your best and just try to maintain your score,’ and that’s what I’ve been trying to do these past two Fridays.” That thought process doesn’t equate to an added amount of pressure she puts on herself. “I don’t try to put as much pressure on myself. Yes, on those putts that I have to make or have to get, yeah, I’ll put some pressure on myself, but with the girls and everything, I just try to have fun, and just talk to them. … They’re great people so it’s good to have some friends here and there.” Friday wasn’t a team tournament, but she hopes her individual success turns into more success for the Eagles, and maybe gives her a chance to Nick Liberante for The Local Mills Godwin’s Diana Domenech tees off on the final day of the girls mini-regional golf tournament at Hanover Country Club Friday. play at the next level. “Right now, I’m just trying a couple of strokes out on bogey on the par 4 second hole, the last four holes 1-under with my best and trying to help the worked out that way.” It was her third year playing the course, “but I’ll take the 1 but the lead became two again a birdie on the 94-yard par 3 team out in the best way that I when Domenech parred No. 4. eighth. in the tournament and second under.” can,” Domenech said. “So I’ve Domenech was a fan of the Whitehouse cut the lead to Each birdied the 362-yard par time winning. Drivers feed speed needs on the Southside By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MIDLOTHIAN – Brad and Tyler Davis have always liked going fast. So has Chris Beazley. The three Hanover County residents don’t just dream about speed, though. They do something about getting it, feeding their need for speed by racing cars at Southside Speedway. And two of the drivers are within striking distance of claiming a trophy at the track’s Championship Night Friday. Brad Davis, the elder of the two Davis brothers at 26, is ranked fourth in the points standings in the Late Model division and has a numerical chance of claiming a third-place trophy Friday night. Beazley is fourth in point standings in the U-Car division. He is the highest ranked rookie in that division and has a chance of earning rookie of the year honors with a good performance Friday night. None of the three started out as huge auto racing fans – but they all were a fan of going as fast as possible. “We always liked to go fast,” Tyler Davis, 21, said. The Davis brothers, who attended Hanover High School, started out racing go-karts and dirt bikes with their father, Jeffrey, on the dirt roads around their home. A family friend talked Jeffrey Davis into trying go-kart racing at Capital City Speedway in Ashland in 1997. Brad Davis started the next year to cement what was becoming a family tradition. The bothers summed up their family’s involvement, with Brad Davis starting, “We went from never seeing a racetrack before …” and Tyler finishing, “... to every weekend seeing a different state.” Tyler Davis was too young to

drive when his brother started racing in 1998, but he wasn’t too young to help out, even when Brad Davis moved into stock cars with the Allison Legacy Series in 2004. “I was working on them probably a few years before I even started racing – I was too little,” Tyler Davis said. He was more than a go-fer. “He was probably our biggest help,” Brad Davis said. “He never stopped. When we moved into race cars he did all the work
Beazley said. “We checked it out one Sunday and the following week we went and bought all the racing stuff.” Beazley briefly tried stock cars early in his driving career, on them, pretty much. We just but he enjoyed the atmosphere took all the credit. When he of go-kart racing – where he would come home from school won a number of state and he would get under them and clean them, help us get them ready and load up.” Like the Davis brothers, Continued from pg. 34 Beazley – a 37-year-old Caroline County native – was introduced to go-kart racing by a family been trying to focus a little and member in 1993. national titles – more. He began both driving at and helping his brother Mike, owner of Capital City Speedway, at the Ashland track. Last year, however, Chris Beazley got the itch to drive stock cars again. While he couldn’t afford to run his own car, he arranged a deal to drive for Steve Little of Allstar Motorsports with additional sponsorship by Capital City Speedway and Whittaker Trucking. While all three drivers would love to reach NASCAR’s ranks, they are all realistic about their prospects of making it with the resources they have. They all say they are happy continuing to compete where they are. “If this is as far as I do go, I’ll be satisfied with that,” Beazley said. “I’m just going as far as I can go and seeing what we can do,” Tyler Davis said. “I love racing. I’ll run anything.” Gates open and qualifying begins for Southside Speedway’s Championship Night Friday at 6 p.m. Races will start at 7:30. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Ashland Main Street gets ready for 7th Chalk Walk ASHLAND – The Ashland Main Street Association is calling for artists of all ages to participate in the 2016 Ashland Chalk Walk, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in the downtown historic district. Professional, amateur, and aspiring artists of all ages are invited to participate and demonstrate their skills to an appreciative public. New for 2016: This year artists are encouraged to create sidewalk art throughout the downtown. A new pathway for artists and families to explore throughout the historic district streets called “Yellow Brick Road” is being planned. Also new for 2016, artists will be competing for five (5) $100 prizes at the event. The prizes will be awarded to winners in the following cat-
egories: Children and Family Artists: Kids ages 6-11 (must be accompanied by an Adult Family Member) Middle School Artists: Ages 12-14 High School Artists: Ages 15-18 Young Adult Artists: Ages 19-22 Adult Artists of All Ages: Ages 23-up All participants must preregister for the event and can find registration information, guidelines and tips, and review photos from previous years’ events by visiting the Ashland Main Street Association website at www.MainStreetAshland.org Pre-registration is open now through Sept 15. The reservation fee for one 3x3 block is $5 and one 6x6 block is $10. Payments can be made through PayPal on
the web site, or paid by cash or check on the day of the event. Pre-registered artists must check in at the Ashland Library Plaza on Sept, 17. All chalks are provided and the images should be family friendly. Artists must bring a photo or drawing of their intended chalk masterpiece, which will be approved at check-in. Sidewalk space will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Events like the Chalk Walk would not be possible without the sponsorship support of local businesses, residents, and community organizations. Sponsorship information can also be found on the Main Street website: www. MainStreetAshland.org.
