Teen indicted in wreck that killed two By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

HANOVER — Nikolas Seth Fleming, 18, has been indicted on two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the April 23 deaths of Dylan Ballard, 17, and Elliott Hinton, 22, both of Mechanicsville. A Hanover County Grand Jury handed down the indictments on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Fleming was arraigned on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and released on a $20,000 bond. Sgt. James R. Cooper of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s

Office said, “Fleming was the driver of the 2001 Dodge pickup truck that crashed on Cold Harbor Road on April 23, 2016, claiming the lives of Dylan Ballard, 17, and Elliott Hinton, 22.” R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III, commonwealth’s attorney for Hanover County, said last Tuesday that “the next thing that happens is we will select a court date, but I have no idea as to when that will be until we find what available dates are with the court and the defense counsel.” Col. David R. Hines, sher-

iff, said, “I am very proud of our investigators who worked tirelessly to bring a successful conclusion to this investigation. We will continue to support the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as this case goes to trial.” The crash took place around 10:36 p.m. at 6089 Cold Harbor Road in Mechanicsville. Ballard and Hinton died when the 2001 four-door Dodge Ram pickup truck in which they were passengers Photos courtesy of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office struck a tree head-on. Law firm, council review rail opposition By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local

Ashland Town Council members continue to voice their opposition to a high-speed rail proposal after having contracted the Williams Mullen law firm to represent the municipality.

ASHLAND — Lobbyists from the law firm of Williams Mullen’s Government Group recently discussed with Ashland Town Council the municipality’s opposition with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT)

concerning the DC2RVA high-speed rail proposal. The rail issue topped the agenda for the Sept. 20 regular council meeting. Council hired the Williams Mullen firm in response to the potential addition of a third rail proposed by the DRPT. If approved, the high-speed rail would roll straight through Ashland alongside the

two existing railroad tracks that already pass through the town. Kenneth Hutcheson, director of government affairs for Williams Mullen’s Richmond location and vice chairman of the law firm’s government relations practice group, along with attorney and state

GLEN ALLEN — Do you have a desire to keep your own honey bees? Here’s your chance to learn how to get started for next year. The Ashland Beekeepers Association (ABA) is offering a one-day class, “Beekeeping 101,” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in “The Banquet Room” at Debbie’s Kitchen, located at 13155 Mountain Rd. in Glen Allen. Check-in time is 8:30 a.m. ABA president Ronnie Bolton said, “Both our state and county electorates have been buzzing with activity this year in support of honey bees. The Managed Pollinator Protection Plan and Limited Liability for beekeepers was passed by our state legislature. Both of these required the issuance of Best Management Practice plans, which will not only benefit the bees, but the general public as well.” Following that, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance in support of beekeeping in residential zoning, and

the Henrico County Board of Supervisors is considering the same. In June, a rooftop bee hive on the Oliver Hill Building at Capitol Square in Richmond was dedicated by First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe. “All of this is in recognition of the vital role honey bees have in our ecology and economy. Remembering that October in 1962

From the editor

Thinking of friends who won their battles We we prepare for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the lives of two friends — one in my hometown and one here — have been on my mind a lot lately. Both, thankfully, have come out of the fight as survivors. But, it’s been a rough road and their spirit is inspiring. The friend in my hometown learned two years ago she had breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. I had seen her just weeks before she learned the terrible news. Bubbly is a word to describe her. I don’t know that I ever saw her sullen or somber — and we’ve been friends for 38 years. She did endure the side effects associated with chemotherapy but remained optimistic and, most of all, held to her faith in healing. Today she’s pretty much back to her old self, as the saying goes, and has become a voice and support system for those facing the unknown when you hear the word cancer. The other friend, who I see often, never lost her determination to be the victor in the battle. She was one of the lucky ones in that her annual mammogram spotted the small spot early. And, I’ll point out, she has always been diligent in having her annual mammogram. So, she is proof that cancer can find its way into your body that quickly. She had a lumpectomy and then underwent chemotherapy and then radiation. There were weekends when she could hardly get out of bed. Between the exhaustion and nausea associated with the treatments, she was down but not out. She kept her routine, going to work every day. She even scheduled her treatments so that the side effects would be an issue on the weekend and not impact her schedule. I’m sure she could have taken short-term disability or made some arrangements with her company’s Human Resources Department, but she was adamant about sticking to her routine. As a wife and mother, she never wavered in her role with her husband and children. I was already proud to call these women friends, but their incredible strength in the face of adversity has made me respect them even more. The lesson here is don’t ignore the signs, do self-exams, get your annual mammogram. Be a survivor. I’m blessed to have two friends who are. Melody Kinser

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Like many Americans, I’ve pretty much tuned out the current campaign season, a victim of ad nauseam news coverage, overstated positions of politically charged commentators, and two candidates that have the highest negative ratings in American history. But, I do pay attention when I hear candidates speak of international confrontation with little regard for consequences or national security. And the casual talk of the use of nuclear weapons is a clear indication of a

nation with a short memory. For those of us who lived through the years of nuclear proliferation and Cold War close calls, the thought of renewed nuclear tension is the kind of phenomenon that many of us would like to forget. And few who lived it will forget the harrowing weeks in October 1962 when American sat on the brink of nuclear destruction. It was a crisis that arose not from the careless use of words or idle threats, but had more somber realities in its origin. Russian military officials strategically placed missiles in Cuba, only

90 miles from the Florida coast, and American intelligence discovered the offensive weapons as they flew intelligence missions over the Caribbean island. For days, the world held its breath as President John F. Kennedy and Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev assumed non-negotiable positions on the missiles. America could not live with the threat of nuclear distraction only minutes away, and Russia refused to be viewed as less than courageous in asserting its right to install the missee 1962, pg. 8

LETTERS | Reader Views

Reader writes in defense of managing editor’s opinion I’m thinking these letters to the editor are being a bit tough on Melody Kinser. All because she may be a Democrat and she don’t share your view. So what, being a Republican, you don’t share her view either — so looks like a tie to me. Twenty-eight years of past presidents that had no idea of what they were doing. A few lucked out and didn’t look so bad because of (in my opinion) a government approved Ponzi scheme that made everyone look good until the scheme eventually fell apart. The scheme was good and everyone was having fun, follow the leader so to speak. The president can do it so why can’t we? So much fun, in fact, that no one was watching the back door and allowed the USA to be outsmarted by a few dumb radicals who took over the USA for a few days and now we are paying for it forever. As taxpayers were getting part of the pie we really didn’t care what the guys in Washington, D.C., were doing, no worries, let ’em do what they want; we have plenty, they can’t hurt us! Really? So let’s do it all over again, elect one of two possible Caligulas running for office. Not because either one is qualified or not even because we believe either of them is capable but just because as a Democrat we want a Democrat and as a Republican we want a Republican, no matter the consequences.

And in case anyone gets the urge to jump ship for the other side it’s only a matter of tuning your TV to CNN or Fox, depending on your political DNA to get you back on track with your daily dose of political party propaganda. In case that don’t work you can always tune in to Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or that little fat guy Glenn Beck to get the ammunition you need to argue your political view the next day. And, if nothing else, you will feel better knowing you have helped those guys make their yearly multi-million-dollar paycheck just for telling you what you like to hear. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Gunner is a happy young dog that is full of playful energy. He was surrendered to the shelter last month. Gunner is very good with people and other dogs. He loves to run and does well on a leash. He might do best in an active home environment. Zeus, right, 447673, is a 3-year-old male pit bull/hound mix. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Zeus was surrendered to the shelter in July. He has come a long way. He has gone from somewhat timid to very friendly. Zeus loves to be around people. He loves to run and play outside in the shelter yard. He is getting better around other dogs. Zeus might be better in a single dog environment. National Day of Service As a member of the Scotchtown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, I was asked to head our Community Classroom program. Our National Day of Service is Oct. 11. This would involve showing our appreciation to those wonderful individuals who have chosen to make education their life’s work. I began to reflect back on my own school experience . . . It has been years since I sat in a classroom, but I still remember those dedicat-

siles. It was a crisis that captured the attention of almost every American, and those old enough felt the real threat that worldwide destruction might become a reality. Each evening brought questions of what would happen next and what the next sunrise would bring. I was just old enough to realize the devastating nature

ed teachers of my past: The ones who coaxed a shy girl to ask questions, fueled her love of history and literature, and never gave up when math seemed a foreign language. Many changes have occurred since my early school days, but one thing still remains constant: Teachers teach for the love of teaching! They make a difference, one child at a time. Teachers educate the youth of today, while shaping the future of tomorrow. A teacher’s job is not easy, but how rewarding it is to inspire students to be the best they can be. Mine inspired me to be a life-long learner, and for that I will be forever grateful. Teachers – thank you for of the conflict. I remember staring out of my window and watching small children play on my block, wishing I were young enough to not appreciate the seriousness of world politics. The crisis affected every aspect of life in America. School days were filled with air raid drills and reviews of routes of evacuation. As we lined up with our heads covered and nestled against our lockers, the reality of a nuclear-equipped

As many of you already know, the congressional districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia recently were redrawn. Hanover County used to be in the 7th District, but now we are a part of the 1st District. This means that on Nov. 8th, we will be picking between Matt Rowe and Rob Wittman to represent us in Congress. I have personally decided

to support Matt Rowe. Matt is happily married, has three children, and currently serves on the town council in Bowling Green. On his website (mattrowe. org), he states that he is running for Congress because he believes “we need a representative that will work tirelessly to improve the day-to-day lives of everyone in the district.” He goes on to state that we need something deeper than big government or small government; we need smart, efficient government. Matt wants to invest in our district’s infrastructure, because our nation has a D+ rating (not good) from the American Society of Civil Engineers. By modernizing our energy,

water, broadband, and transportation services, Matt would create thousands of new jobs for our district. Oh, and speaking of jobs, Matt also is strongly opposed to the TPP, or Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is a major international trade agreement (being championed by President Obama) that would send millions of jobs overseas and result in lower wages for American workers. Another major part of Mr. Rowe’s campaign platform is reforming the Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans are still waiting months at a time for urgent care in some VA facilities as they wade through the claims and appeals process. Matt wants to transform

the VA into a collaborative care model that integrates physical health, mental health, and substance abuse services. He also believes that the best care begins at home, and wants to increase assistance for families that are personally caring for veterans. The list goes on and on. But the main fact is that Matt has proven himself as a dedicated council member in Bowling Green, and now he wants to bring that passion and dedication to Congress. We all talk about how much our government needs to change, and now is our chance! Let’s usher in that change this November by voting for Matt Rowe! Joshua Briere Mechanicsville

world was ever present. After days of back and forth rhetoric with neither side agreeing to budge from their positions, President Kennedy issued the ultimate ultimatum. If Russian ships attempted to import more missiles to Cuba, the U.S. Navy would stop and board any ship suspected of carrying the weapons. It was clear what the warning meant, and a nation held its breath as Soviet ships headed toward the tiny island. The

nation exhaled a huge sigh of relief when the ships suspected of transporting the weapons, turned around and headed back to the homeland. In the aftermath, many Americans viewed the confrontation as a clear example of American strength and how Kennedy had forced Khrushchev to back down. In reality, the solution was much more complicated. The United States agreed to remove missiles based in Turkey that

threatened Soviet territory in exchange for Russia’s guarantee to remove the missiles from Cuba. In the end, the heated rhetoric had been replaced by reasoned negotiations that averted a world disaster. And the lesson was one well learned, and, for decades, the two world powers refused to allow confrontations to escalate to another Cuban Missile Crisis. For many, a time when the world came close was proof enough of the futility of nuclear weapons, and their dire consequences. The crisis confirmed

that the next war would have no winners, only losers. When I hear a candidate say “I would bomb the —— out of them”, it reminds me of that time decades ago when threats were taken seriously, and words brought this nation as close to nuclear destruction as it could get. Those who lived it realize that carrying a big stick cannot involve a nuclear go button, and a nation that once came close never wants to return to a scenario where millions of citizens face the real threat of destruction.

he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The CDC advises that such physical activity should include aerobic activity and muscle and bone strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity should take up most of kids’ daily physical activities and can include moderate activities, such as brisk walking, or more intense activities like running. Parents should make sure kids include some vigorous aerobic activity in their physical activity routines at least three days per week. Muscle strengthening activities do not mean parents should get their youngsters in the gym as soon as possible. Rather, activities like gymnastics or push-ups done three times per week can be enough to help kids build strong muscles. The CDC notes that as kids reach adolescence, they may start structured weight-training programs to strengthen their muscles. Jumping rope or running three times per week can serve as kids’ bone-strengthening exercises.

APD advises residents to be aware of suspicious activity Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – Officer Chip Watts said the Ashland Police Department is advising residents of two reports of suspicious activity that occurred late last week. While no criminal offenses

occurred and no threatening behavior is indicated, residents should be aware and alert out of an abundance of caution. On Friday, Sept. 23 during the morning hours, an adult male approached two juvenile females at a school bus stop and engaged them in conversation.

While it was reported that the male did not say or do anything inappropriate, Watts said the male was not known to the juveniles and appeared suspicious. He said the subject is described as a white male having gray hair, a gray beard and glasses, wearing a Carolina

blue colored t-shirt, khaki shorts, tennis shoes and white socks. On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24, an unknown subject of similar description approached a female and asked if she wanted to go to Kings Dominion. That subject is additionally described as a

white male in his 60s, with a gray beard wearing shorts and flip flops driving a red four door car, possibly a Hyundai model. Both of these incidents occurred in the Center Street and Maple Street corridors. Again, while no criminal

or threatening activity has occurred, Watts said residents are encouraged to be alert for suspicious behavior and report it immediately by calling 911. Anyone with information regarding these two incidents should contact APD at 804412-0600.

Ballard was a senior at LeeDavis High School. His number 28 from his football jersey was displayed prominently in his memory throughout the area. Hinton, who lost his life just days before what would have been his 23rd birthday, April 28, graduated in 2011 from Lee-Davis.

He used the

old family recipes for delicious pastries, breads, pies and cakes that his father had used since 1911 at Williams Bakery in Church Hill. His son, Ronnie, carries on the tradition. Bill lived a life of service to God. He was a founding WILLIAMS member of West Hill Baptist Chapel now Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Rockville celebrates Field Day of the Past

Economic Development, COTU partner to add ‘Origin’ Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

John Beebe for The Local

The annual Field Day of the Past was held the weekend of Sept. 17, with the Rockville community once again attracting people from miles around to the event, which started in 1992. While the celebration is held on the Goochland County side of Rockville, Hanover County’s Rockville residents joined in the food, fun, games, and, most of all, history. Thousands turn out for the historical aspect, as well as everything else that goes with Field Day of the Past and its years of successes. In the photo at left, youngsters found a unique form of amusement in a bin of corn kernels. At right, colors fill the night sky with beauty as folks stand in awe of the light show. Field Day of the Past provides an opportunity to go back in time and learn about the skills, crafts and trades that were commonplace throughout the area. As in years past, the 2016 version was deemed a success.

Heyda and Chris Vass from Highpoint Farms welcomed their first granddaughter Mya Sofia Gama, weighing 6.49 pounds and 20.5 inches long at 6:08 p.m. September 14, 2016, at Memorial Regional Medical Center. Mya’s parents, Ariana and Eduardo Gama, said they are overjoyed with their daughter. Mya was expected with a lot of love and excitement in different parts of the world in Mechanicsville by great-grandmother, Mimi (Gail Lawrence) and, in Brazil, by her paternal grandparents, Carl and Eduardo, aunts, Beatriz and Rafaela and, in Puerto Rico, by greatgrandmother Dolores, uncle Francisco and cousin Alejandro. “We are all thankful for the gift of this child from God and we pray that He will keep her safe, healthy and happy for the rest of her life,” her grandmother Heyda said.

of the Universe offerings, right in the heart of downtown Ashland. The Town of Ashland Economic Development Authority worked with the property owner and Ray Brothers LLC to help offset a portion of the cost to convert the building, a former antique store located at 106 S. Railroad Avenue, to a small brewery concept. “We are really excited about the potential this operation has to bring new people to Downtown Ashland”, said Darrell Leftwich, chairman of the Economic Development Authority, “This project represents the fruition of a great deal of work by the team at COTU Brewing, and we were happy to help them make this a reality here at the Center of the Universe.” Ashland Mayor James Foley

echoed these sentiments. “I am very excited that my favorite brewing company is opening a space in the heart of the Center of the Universe. COTU makes the best beers on the planet and I encourage everyone to come down and try one.” For many in Ashland, this is not only an exciting addition to the lineup along Main Street, but another locally owned business making an investment in the historic downtown area. “The Town of Ashland is a special place for many reasons”, said Town Manager Charles Hartgrove, “One of those is because of its innovative and diverse business community. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy and we are thrilled to add another thriving one to our Main Street District.” Joe Topham serves as the town’s business retention and expansion manager.

Dr. Elaine Bolte and her husband Mark recently traveled to Iceland and took along a copy of The Mechanicsville Local. They are shown in a very rare volcano that did not collapse after erupting 40,000 years ago. They descended around 600 feet into Prihnukagigur volcano to explore and photograph the many chambers visible inside.

In addition to representing the town with negotiations between Ashland and the DRPT, they have and will continue to be dealing with the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). At last week’s meeting, Hutcheson provided an overview of what their current perspective is in regards to Ashland’s issue with the addition of a third track.

He explained to council that their intentions for the presentation they introduced at the Sept. 20 meeting were to outline the lobbyists’ role in the case. On that same Tuesday, the CTB held a morning workshop as well as project tours later that afternoon to produce further conversations regarding the DRPT’s high-speed rail proposal. Speaking about the process in how the case may play out in later dates, Hutcheson wanted to give council an idea of how it may look in terms of their roles as the town’s representation. Further explaining their

ing, Hutcheson boasted that Ashland’s voice was by the far the strongest. “One thing that has been evident to us since we’ve been engaged is that the town is united. And that is tremendously helpful as we’re going forward trying to develop strategies, said Hutcheson. “This morning, it’s safe to say that Ashland dominated the public commenting period. The Town of Ashland and Hanover County were represented at the council meeting. Also attending were members of the Ashland Main Street Association and Families Under the Rail. Council member Kathy Abbott talked about how all those parties voiced their opinions to the CBT. Abbott and Vice Mayor James Murray were expected to echo Ashland’s position to the CTB again on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Atlee dominates Hawks in shutout victory By Kris Mason For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Although Atlee had a double-digit lead at half over rival Hanover Friday, they were not at all complacent. The Raiders were determined not to lose a double digit-lead for the second week in a row. The previous week against Douglas Freeman, the Raiders had a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter but was unable to hang on and lost on a last-minute touchdown. Friday’s second-half performance by the Raiders was the opposite of that week’s performance. Atlee outscored Hanover 21-0 in the second half on its way to a 31-0 win over the visiting Hawks. First-year Atlee head coach Matt Gray emphasized finishing strong in his halftime talk with his team. “We had to stay in the mindset that you’ve got to finish four quarters because, obviously, we let one get away from us last week,” Gray said. “We had to get the seniors to lead these guys and finish the game.” The Raiders were led by senior running back Clifton Woody, who rushed for a 145 yards in the game – including an 84-yard touchdown late in the game. Freshman quarterback Tyler Warren was a dual threat, throwing for 94 yards

Blue Devils spoil C-feds’ undefeated season 76-yard run off right tackle to put the Blue Devils ahead by the game’s final margin. A Trey Smith interception on the ensuing Lee-Davis drive sealed the deal. “We are trying to learn how to win. We’ve played tough football. We played a game two weeks ago we feel we should have won, but didn’t finish. Tonight we finished,” Brown said. Jones finished with 18 carries for 143 yards, while Coles rushed for 74 yards and added 56 in the air on 4-of-9 passing. For Lee-Davis, Hayden Walsh had 22 carries for 93 yards filling in as the lead back for Nathan Evans. Quarterback Zach Lass completed 11 of 27 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown pass to Rice. Jonathan Howard can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

By Jonathan Howard For the Times-Dispatch VARINA – Varina coach Stu Brown says the most important possession of a football game is the first one of the second half. Given the result of that possession — a blocked field goal attempt that led to a Lee-Davis touchdown and 9-point lead — his team could have folded. Instead, the Blue Devils rallied and scored the final 21 points of the game in a 31-19 victory. “We put ourselves in position to kick a field goal and go up by 1,” Brown said. “Next thing you know, we’re down by 9, and then we get the ball back and drive down and score.” Trailing 12-10 at the half, Varina (2-2, 1-0 Capital District) began the second half with a 55-yard drive to set up a Shane Barrett 37-yard field goal attempt. Lee-Davis (3-1, 0-1) broke through the line and blocked the kick, which was scooped up by Josh Rice and returned for the score. As the offensive line gathered around before going back out on the field, Brown said the group felt confident. “The biggest thing,” Brown said, “you just listened to the offensive line over there, they said, ‘We’re pounding them, Coach.’ ” The Blue Devils did answer the bell, embarking on a 56yard scoring drive, paced by a 30-yard pass play from R.J. Coles to Samond Pinchback. Coles, who drew the start at quarterback because of an injury to Brion Logan, finished the drive with a 1-yard run to draw the Blue Devils within 2 at 19-17. Coles also broke a 32-yard run for the game’s first score. “I did what I’ve always believed in — we put our best athlete at quarterback,” Brown

Patrick Henry stuns Henrico with late TD right in front of me. Set himself up perfect. And I just take a leap of faith, and I get this guy’s legs. I couldn’t breathe. “This is the biggest play I’m ever going to have.” Michael Harris recovered Jalon Jones’ second fumble of the game near midfield on the next play, and PH ran out the clock. Jones had 101 yards rushing and 145 passing, including an 11-yard TD to Robert Joseph in the second quarter. The extra point failed after a low snap forced a run. Hart, a former quarterback turned wingback in PH’s option offense, took over at quarterback to start the second half after starter Travious Tyler was injured. He had 84 yards rushing. “I knew probably about four plays total,” said Hart, whose helmet was ripped off on one run. “Direct snap go left, direct snap go right. “Henrico is one of the best 5A schools in the state. Something was different this year. We had a lot more confidence going into this game at our place. … We came into the game knowing we could battle.” Tim Pearrell can be reached at tpearrell@timesdispatch.com.

By Tim Pearrell Richmond Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – Patrick Henry’s Hunter Hart cramped, went out of the game, then came back. Much like Hart, his teammates wouldn’t go away against Henrico on Friday night. They battled, hung around — and then got the break they needed late in the fourth quarter and turned it into a 7-6 victory over the No. 9 Warriors at Patrick Henry. With PH trailing 6-0 with fewer than 5 minutes left, a high snap sailed over the head of Henrico punter Egan Alsheskie, setting up the Patriots at the Warriors’ 11. Two plays later, Hart found the middle clogged, went around the left side and scored from 9 yards to tie the game. That was the beginning of a wild sequence that included two extra-point attempts by Patrick Henry’s Aaron Martinez, a game-saving tackle by PH’s Jed Pinkston on a punt return and a fumble recovery on Henrico’s final possession. The Patriots improved to 4-0. Henrico fell to 3-1. “We said it in the locker room at halftime,” Hart said. “It’s going to have to be a special teams play for us to win this football game. “Thank God they snapped it over his head. We get it inside the 15, and we looked at each other and went, ‘This is our chance right here.’ We made the best of it, luckily.” The hard way. The Patriots were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after the TD. Martinez, kicking a 35-yard extra point, hit a low ball that wasn’t close. But Henrico, hurt repeatedly throughout the game by flags, was penalized for hurdling the line.

Mosavel-Lo’s record split gives ’cats win in relays By Dylan Garner Richmond Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – As he took the baton for Deep Run, senior Bashir Mosavel-Lo had an 11-second gap to make up to catch the leader from Patriot. Under cover of darkness, it took him less than a mile to seize the lead. With fans roaring from every side — as well as the cart leading him through — Mosavel-Lo crossed the illuminated finish line to take a victory for the Wildcats at the RVA Relays at Pole Green Park. “I think everyone gave it their all,” Mosavel-Lo said. “Each time someone passed, my heart stopped. … But in the end, you just get it where you get it, and you do what you can do. Luckily, it was enough. But (my team) killed it, honestly.” In the second edition of the night-time 5x2,500-meter relay race, hosted by MileStat.com, the Deep Run boys set a meet record in the boys ‘A’ race, finishing in 37:47, slightly faster than last year’s winning relay from Midlothian. Mosavel-Lo recorded the quickest split to take home the title — as well as the coveted event trophy, a backpack — clocking in at 7:06.

Shelby Lum/Times-Dispatch

Deep Run’s Zachary Levet closely follows Lee-Davis’ Lane Davis during the RVA Relays at Pole Green Park Saturday.

Zachary Levet, who ran the second leg for the Wildcats, made up significant ground and recorded a 7:12 split, which was the second best of every runner in the race.

“I just kept moving up,” said Levet, a senior. “I was really just thinking about how I could help the team. I knew Bashir, Mathias (Cannon) and Jacob (Speers) were coming behind

me. I was like, they can clean up, whatever happens.” Cannon added the fourthquickest leg, 7:25, to add to the balanced victory for Deep Run. It was shorter, darker and

louder than the traditional high school 5K race, but it added up to a thriller. “It’s so incredible, just running a relay in XC,” MosavelLo said. “And the way the race

went, everyone had a part. And it’s just so much fun to bring it home. It’s insane.” Lee-Davis, which led after the third leg on its home course, crossed the finish line fourth (38:30), and Glen Allen was fifth (38:38). Rachel McArthur carried Patriot to a title in the girls ‘A’ race, crossing in 44:49. Midlothian combined for a fourth-place finish (45:51), and Glen Allen was fifth (46:05). Patriot won the cumulative team titles for both the boys and girls, which included the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ races. After a team title at the Pole Green Classic, the Deep Run boys now have two big invitational titles before the end of September. Led by the top three of Mosavel-Lo, Levet and Cannon, the Wildcats are in prime position as October’s postseason draws closer. “It lets us know that whatever meet we go to, we’re (a team) to keep an eye on,” Mosavel-Lo said. “At all of our future meets, we’re going to go, ‘OK, we performed there, so I know we can do something at this race.’ ” Dylan Garner can be reached at dgarner@timesdispatch.com.

Lee-Davis boys, girls sweep district meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

Dave Lawrence/The Local

Hanover’s Rachel Crytser comes in well ahead of Lee-Davis runner Desirae Horsley to win the girls’ race in a Capital District cross country meet at Pole Green Park Wednesday.

MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover’s Rachel Crytser and Lee-Davis’ Patrick Sutphin won their respective races by respectable margins in a Capital District cross country meet at Pole Green Park Wednesday. The Confederates, in a tuneup for the RVA Relays Saturday, handily won the boys and girls team competitions. Their boys beat second-place Atlee 27-46,

and their girls finished 16 points ahead of Hanover, 29-45. While there were plenty of good individual battles – ending with sprints or near sprints at the finish line – both Crytser and Sutphin came across the finish with second-place finishers well back of them. Crytser, who finished in 21:05, said she changed the way she normally runs for the race. “I always end up running too fast for the first mile and then, like, dropping off,” Crytser

said. “So I tried to go slower the first mile. I think I executed that pretty well.” She was just behind the leaders in fourth place for that first mile, but she took the lead shortly after that milestone and held it the rest of the way. LeeDavis runners Desirae Horsley came in second in 21:10 and Nicole Van Ess third in 21:23. Sutphin wasn’t feeling too well before the boys race, but that changed. “I think it was because of

the weather,” Sutphin said. “But I felt good while I was racing, I guess.” Like Crytser, Sutphin took the lead after the first mile and held it the rest of the way. He said he was just running. “I try to clear my mind, actually,” he said. “I don’t like to think of other things, except for moving – and breathing.” While his mind was clear on the course, he had a goal firmly see SWEEP, pg. 36

Atlee, PH win cross-county boys volleyball matches By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee’s and Patrick Henry’s boys volleyball teams remained undefeated after two crosscounty matches Tuesday night. The Raiders swept visiting Hanover 25-11, 25-18, 25-21 in one match, while the Patriots successfully defended their home court against the Confederates 25-18, 25-21, 1925, 25-15. Atlee was led by Alex Field with 14 kills and 12 digs, Jake French with 12 kills and four blocks, Matt Wiggins with seven kills and 11 digs and Michael Norris with two kills and 31 assists. Atlee head coach Randy Jones said the Raiders still have work to do. “Of course, we have some things that we can work on,” Jones said. “The guys have high expectations of how they’re going to finish in this season being that they lost in the state semifinals in the last two years.”

Patrick Henry’s Luke Puckett spikes over Lee-Davis’ Aaron Milstead in the Patriots’ 3-1 win over the Confederates Tuesday.

Patrick Henry head coach Michael Townsend said the Patriots, who had a battle with Lee-Davis, rose to the occasion. “It was really the best that I have seen my team play this year,” Townsend said. “Our serve-receive was awesome that night. We ran the middles a lot. We ran the outside. … I felt like we had control of the whole

match.” The Patriots were led by a trio of sophomores: C.W. McIlhenny (three aces, 15 kills, 18 digs), Jarrett Carrano (three aces, 19 kills, seven digs) and Jaxon Delgado (10 kills, five blocks). Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

now. I’ve got to play well in the regional and then get to state and do it again. I’m going out with a bang.” Rathbone tied Cole and Irby with a 6-over 77. Patrick Henry head coach Dave Hudak said that Rathbone, a freshman, has plenty of tournament experience that helps her stay focused during a round. “She’s very level-headed. She’s tournament-tough,” Hudak said. “Nerves don’t really come into play with her because she plays so many tournaments, or she has prior to this season. She’s about as steady as they come.”

Rathbone and Wheeler both qualified for the regional tournament as individuals outright. But Wheeler’s teammate, Bryce Tackett, along with Albemarle’s Robert Brozey, Jack Burris and Ryan Porter and Orange County’s Colby Ramasco – all of whom shot a 79 – had to submit to a playoff for the remaining two individual berths in the regional. Tackett and Brozey emerged from the playoff looking forward to another week of golf. Randy King of the Roanoke Times contributed to this report.
