The iconic Holiday Illumination of the two structures at the Historic Polegreen Church on Heatherwood Drive at Rural Point Road has fascinated visitors, passersby and the Mechanicsville community for many years. And, for the first time, this year the costly display, which runs through the first week of January, is now underwritten though a generous grant from M&T Bank. Jennifer A. Corey, vice president and regional manager for M&T Bank, is shown presenting a check for the illumination to Dave Fuller, treasurer and board member of the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation.

HANOVER — After years of planning and a healthy delay due to challenging economic conditions, Hanover County cut the ribbon last Wednesday on a new 115,000-square-foot, $36 million courthouse. Originally envisioned in 2006, the project was shelved when the economic downturn occurred in 2008 and supervisors renewed the plans in 2013.
Chief Circuit Court Judge Overton Harris and Hanover County Board of Supervisors chairman Aubrey M. “Bucky” Stanley, Beaverdam District, provided opening remarks for the ceremony. “Many, many people have been responsible for building this building,” Stanley told an assembled group of about 200 people. “This is a special building behind us.” see COURTHOUSE, pg. 4
HANOVER – Members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors have opted to advertise a public hearing for a comprehensive plan amendment that would establish a commercial node near Montpelier to accommodate a project that would eventually contain a gas station, outdoor movie facility and a special events park. The panel delayed action last month when Planning Director David Maloney suggested the county extend the rural village line to include the property in question and allow the project to move forward. At that time, some supervisors viewed that as spot zoning, or changing classifications for a particular project or request. Also at that meeting, South Anna District supervisor Wayne Hazzard made it clear it was up to the neighbors to decide the see HEARING, pg. 9

County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr., photo at left, welcomed visitors to the official ribbon cutting for the new courthouse. Hanover County Circuit Court Judge Overton Harris provided opening remarks and provided a historical background of the site where the new courthouse sits.

Stanley was on the original committee that envisioned a new courthouse in 2006, and said the new building will allow citizens better access to records and court-related matters, and also would allow several departments to utilize renovated space in the vacated old court buildings. “That’s an important part of this. Some of those folks have been in a building that is more than 100 years old,” Stanley said after the ceremony. Judge Harris said he is looking forward to starting work in the new building on Jan. 3, and said the new facility is the latest in a series of courthouse constructions near the current site. “This dedication itself is an historic event. Here in Hanover,
we’ve constructed court facilities only three times before,” Harris said, noting the county had built previous courthouses in “1735ish,” 1965 and 1978. Following the ribbon cut-

Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, said many of those new and advanced features equate to better security and citizen safety. “It’s just safer all around,” Hines said. “It makes it safer
transferring inmates and conducting business in the court. This will be safer for everybody. It’s something we had to have.” Stanley said that safety factor was a prime consideration when the project was designed. “Safety in courthouses is a big concern and we’ve built that into this building, not only for the judges and employees, but for the citizens of Hanover,” Stanley said. Former assistant county administrator John Budesky said seeing the finished product was satisfying. Before moving to Goochland as county administrator, Budesky piloted the program through bidding and into construction. “It’s great to have been part of this project that will mean so much to this community,” Budesky said. “It’s great comsee COURTHOUSE, pg. 35

ing back and seeing how well the finished product turned out.” Also there from day one was David Butler, Hanover’s deputy director of General Services. He was putting the final touches on the project by conducting tours for the public following the ceremony, but took time later to comment on the completion. “This new courthouse represents the culmination of many years of planning and design, the involvement and cooperation of almost every department in the county and the generous and unselfish support those departments have shown me in helping to deliver to the citizens a new courts building that will serve their needs, safely and securely, well into the future,” Mechanicsville District supervisor Canova Peterson noted the project had defied the
“these days” odds in coming in on time and under budget. “It’s a beautiful facility and a great place for the public to access everything in one place without having to run around. It’s more convenient and customer-friendly,” he said. County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. said the facility was built with present and future capacity in mind. “We tried to build this facility not only for the current needs, but also for the county’s future needs,” he said. “We have some unfinished space that can be sued for additional courtrooms. We have a lot of flexibility going forward as we plan for today and tomorrow’s citizens.” And, though the building will feature more than 100 county employees when it opens early next year, Harris said the real stakeholders in the building are even more numerous. “This is the citizens’ building.”

But, a group of Beaverdam residents thinks the price for that service is too high and also expressed concerns regarding the confidentiality of data collected for the project. In 2013, school officials applied for and were granted a $42,000 grant by Leader in Me. Pam Hawkins, recording secretary for a group called Concerned Stakeholders at Beaverdam Elementary School, said the school obtained the program through non-routine methods that did not include a bidding process for the service. Hawkins said parents and other interested citizens began an inquiry regarding Beaverdam’s relationship with Leader in Me after discovering a $6,000 annual fee associated

They all have higher test scores.” Beaverdam is the only Hanover school utilizing Leader in Me, but the group contends other schools are being considered in the county. Six schools in Henrico County currently use the program. Dale Taylor, another member of the group and longtime Beaverdam resident, said her concerns are centered on data collected and sent to the program’s headquarters regarding Hanover children. “From my perspective, and many others as well, the issue of data mining causes me the most concern,” Taylor said during a public comment period at the school board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 13. Giving truly is better than receiving
Habitat homes are full of joy and hope
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Wow! Have you noticed the pages of names of donors to the 2016 Hanover Christmas Mother program? The list goes on and on. So, what does this tell us? It’s obvious: The people of Hanover County really care about helping those in need during the holiday season. What a blessing to read over the lists and realize how many fellow residents donate to such a worthy cause. Some families depend on this program to ensure a merry Christmas in their homes. You are making that a reality by contributing. I also see many of the same names every year and think “Bravo!” and “Thank you!” for remembering the work of the Christmas Mother. Congratulations to this year’s honoree, Ginger Stanley, as she continues to raise money and
spread the word about the Christmas Mother program. She is representing our county well. The Doswell Ruritan Club is the central organization in coordinating the county-wide fundraiser. Thanks to the members for their dedication to making sure Christmas is memorable and enjoyable for all. It’s not too late to give. You can send your donation to Hanover Christmas Mother, P. O. Box 39, Doswell, VA 23047. The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Hanover County and we commend all those affiliated with the efforts to bring joy to every child and family. This is where we excel as a community.
EMS, but when you witness first-hand how professional, caring and kind the career and volunteer members are, you gain a new perspective. On Friday, Dec. 9, an accident at home found this writer calling 911 for aid. Within minutes, four firefighters, who also are paramedics and emergency medical technicians, arrived. Their compassion in the time of injury was most appreciated. Don’t ever take for granted the emergency services personnel that we have in Hanover County. We are triply fortunate with Fire-EMS, the Sheriff ’s Office and Emergency Communications.
A special thank you
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas 2016, here’s hoping you and yours have a very Merry Christmas.
We often praise the work of Hanover Fire-

Making the Midnight Run with Uncle Dudley By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist (Editor’s note: Contributing columnist Jim Ridolphi has received several requests to repeat his holiday column about his Uncle Dudley. We agree with the Hanover County folks who asked to read this true story again.) I suppose every family has their
own version of my Uncle Dudley. You know, the eccentric one who never quite reached his full potential careerwise, but far exceeded expectations in the game of life. Dudley treated all of his nieces and nephews like his own kids, but that changed for me when I was 9 years old. I lost my father on Christmas Eve 1960, and, from that day forward,

Dudley assumed more than just the role of an uncle. He made long and frequent trips from his Maryland home to guide me through some fairly tough and confusing months following my dad’s death, and stayed long after to offer the wisdom normally provided by a father. I would often hear of my aunts
and uncles dismay over Dudley’s lifestyle and his “waste of genius.” He attended Georgetown University and was president of his class. Upon graduation, he accepted a big job at the State Department but lasted only two weeks. My mother told me he just couldn’t conform to a 9 to 5 schedule. see DUDLEY, pg. 8

“A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul.” — Phillip Moffitt And, I would add, when the home “provides boundless joy.” And, as many of us know, one of the most human of joys is the warmth and security that comes from your home. Recently, in Ashland, a husband and wife, and their two older children, moved into their new Habitat for Humanity home. Present at their house warming were the family, the dedicated staff from Hanover Habitat and many of the wonderful folks who volunteered their time and skills to build this home. The warmth and friendship in their home on that cold, autumn afternoon came to everyone present. This family will celebrate this Christmas in their own home. It is, truly, a universal joy. Hanover Habitat for Humanity is in the business of building affordable homes and of providing “joy.” Since the founding of Hanover Habitat in 1990, 60 homes have been built and sold (that’s right, “sold”) to qualified families. The mortgage payments are recycled back to Hanover Habitat and used for construction of the next home or for the purchase of property. Property taxes, paid by the homeowner, revert to Hanover County. It is a business model that works for the long-term benefit of families in need and for Hanover County. To qualify for a Hanover Habitat home the prospective homeowner must meet several criteria: 1) live or work in Hanover County, 2) have a need for cost-effective housing, 3) have the ability to pay a reasonable mortgage payment, and 4) make a commitment to “partner” with Habitat. This commitment requires the family to engage in “sweat equity” during the see LETTERS, pg. 8

praise for the program. “We have been thoroughly impressed,” she said. “Students are greeted with a handshake from teachers. Leader in Me is purely a character building and leadership skills building program,” White said. She said the program hits several important benchmarks. “It teaches children how to think effectively, work together and how to behave in a normal society,” White added. She said the Leader in Me lessons are integrated with other subject sessions and do not disrupt the normal school day schedule. Several board members expressed support for the program, and chairman John Axselle addressed the list of speakers in an unusual move from the board. “The school board and board of supervisors are impressed personally and is in full support of Leader in Me.”

for their families, are faced with monthly payments of nearly one-half of their income. In partnership with individuals, businesses, local government, the faith community and other nonprofit organizations, Hanover Habitat for Humanity coordinates the resources of the community to purchase and develop land and build safe, affordable homes. It is both common sense and a proven fact that stability of homeownership will have a significant, positive impact on the overall quality of life, including health, education, and income. Responsible homeownership builds stronger families with a reasonably secure future…families that will contribute their skills and time to the Hanover community. The Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity International recently wrote: “As many people … prepare to celebrate the holiday season, we at Habitat for Humanity are taking time to reflect … we
know there is more work than ever ahead of us. Far too many families are in urgent need of safe, decent, affordable housing … we’re focused on building and renovating as many homes as we can.” That message holds very true in Hanover County. Please take a moment from your daily schedule and learn about the excellent … and joyous … work being accomplished by Hanover Habitat. Visit www.hanoverhfh.org or, even better, make a personal visit to the Hanover Habitat offices and/or the Habitat ReStore, both located at 9161 Atlee Rd. in Mechanicsville. The ReStore, a key element of the Hanover Habitat operation, sells really good home furnishings, building materials and hardware, and entertainment items at excellent prices. Together our community can make miracles happen, not only during this season of peace, joy and love, but throughout the entire year.
You can have a meaningful part in providing homeowner keys to the next safe, decent and affordable home for a deserving Hanover Habitat family. The act of helping these families will bring a selfless joy to you, your family, and your organization. In closing let me add this: The work performed by Habitat is much more than just the building of houses. Over the year ahead, Hanover Habitat will tell the human interest aspect in a series of real stories about the folks who purchase and live in a Habitat home. Be sure to read about these heart-warming journeys leading to home ownership. I urge you to take time to find out about the work accomplished and the challenges ahead for Hanover Habitat for Humanity. Trail network tops parks and rec survey results By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – Joshua Farrar, interim town manager and finance director, and Joseph Collins, clerk of council, presented the results of a community engagement event and survey held by the Town of Ashland. They reviewed the findings at the Dec. 8 meeting of the Ashland Parks and Recreation Committee. In the survey’s results, it was revealed that Ashland residents wish to expand the town’s existing trail network in hopes of connecting as much of the trail network as possible. Their interest in community trails was “by far the clearest take-away from this survey,” according to the survey results, which can be found on the town’s website at www.town.ashland.va.us. Their survey also acknowledged how it was clear that several individuals believe the playgrounds need to be replaced or maintained better, particularly the playground in Carter Park. As an alternative, their presentation also mentioned that they received comments related to improving the playgrounds. The overall take-aways from the community engagement event, which included an interactive trails game with the map of Ashland, were the numbers of comments they received that related to expanding the

specific comments from residents about connecting Stony Run Trail to Dejarnette Park. Improving inclusivity of the park system also was among residents’ comments during the community engagement event. Overall, Farrar and Collins reported that the community engagement event was a constructive one, and the results suggested that the participants overwhelmingly agreed with the Parks and Recreation The committee’s six objectives include: funding to replace park equipment every eight years, expand and facilitate programming, expanding the town’s trail
system, constructing a park that is unique to the commonwealth of Virginia, ensuring that all residents live within a 10-minute walk of a town or county park, and diversifying the park system. The survey also asked participants to order the committee’s six objectives by what they thought was the most important; with “one” being the most important, and “six” being the least important. “Twenty-six people gave ‘expanding the trail system’ a number one vote … so it was overwhelmingly by far the favorite objective by everyone who was taking the survey,” said Collins. Their presentation also gave updates regarding ongoing construction projects taking place in the town, including the Carter Park Pool renovations and the Ashland Trolley Line. They advised the Parks and Recreation Committee that the construction start date for the kiddie pool at Carter Park is expected to be in early January, and that Brooks & Co. had made a great deal of progress on the pool’s bathhouse. There will be a kickoff, or scoping meeting that will be held on Nov. 30, 2017, for the revitalization of the Ashland Trolley Line. parison of other gifts received. The process took the eternal procrastinator months or preparation, retrieving just the correct wrapping paper, meticulously scrubbing the 50-cent pieces that would provide his signature to each package for his “kids.” We usually arrived at my grandmother’s house in Maryland on Christmas Eve with a car full of similarly wrapped presents. Our entry
always found Dudley in what looked like Santa’s workshop set up in my grandmother’s dining room. He wrapped in a methodical, deliberate method, each end folded neatly with tape hidden under the seams. Problem was, the wrapping didn’t end until well after dinner. And, there was still the delivery, the most exciting part of the process in my mind. Around midnight, Dudley and I would venture out into the cold Maryland night,
load that cab full of presents, and evoke on a country dash rivaled only by the fat man himself. A quick dart to Southern Maryland where my cousins were still awake and waiting. Another dart to Alexandria and a drop-off for my sister and her kids. Chevy Chase, Arlington, Olney, Rockville and then finally back to Gaithersburg for the final deliveries at around 4 a.m. Each house left us cookies, or cocoa, or candy for our continuing journey. It felt like
Christmas. Our last stop was an old Victorian house owned by my Aunt Mary and Uncle John. They were long asleep when we arrived to a warm and toasty living room with a huge decorated tree, still glistening in the dimly lit room. The smell of warm cookies provided our final snack as we climbed back in that Diamond cab for the short drive to my grandmother’s. I climbed into bed exhaust-

supervisors and the applicant arrived at this alternative plan that modifies the current Comprehensive Plan. “Just for clarification, the commercial node is encompassing an area that is already commercial,” Hazzard said during a comment period. “It’s not just his parcel that would be commercial.” Maloney said there are other businesses located along that corridor on Mountain Road, including a plumbing supply business and a garage. “So, this is still a request for a Comprehensive Plan amend-
ment but instead of extending a rural village, we would have a commercial node,” said Chickahominy supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek. Ashland supervisor Faye Prichard said she is not a fan of Comp Plan amendments that occur outside the normal update window, but could support a motion to advertise. “In this case, where I don’t see any citizens complaints … I think I would consider this as positive.” Maloney pointed out the process is subject to a public hearing. “I’m not going to try to predict the outcome of what that process may produce. I can tell you my office
has received quite a number of phone calls in opposition to the request to add a commercial node.” While expressing his support for commercial development, Hazzard said the ultimate decision should rest with the people who live in that area. “It’s not in my backyard,” Hazzard said. “All this does is authorize a public hearing and people can come forward. I’ve told the applicant if this amendment is not approved, then it’s over. We are not going to do spot zoning.” Mechanicsville supervisor Canova Peterson said he’s always anxious to hear from
the public, but questioned the wisdom of considering a Comprehensive Plan amendment so close to a formal update of the plan scheduled to begin early next year. The motion to advertise a public hearing regarding the proposal passed unanimously and the matter will be placed on the planning commission agenda and eventually make its way back for board consideration.

Pets of the Week
Continued from pg. 15 Photos submitted by Andrew Q. Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Annie, 231431, is a 14-year-old female setter. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Annie is a sweet old girl who surprisingly has a lot of playful energy. Annie was surrendered to the shelter at the beginning of the month sadly because her owner passed away. She is super sweet and loves people. Annie might do best as an only dog or along with her sister. Scruffy, 327238, is a 9-year-old female chow/ Labrador retriever mix. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Scruffy was turned in with Annie at the same time this month. Both dogs were in the same household. Scruffy, like Annie, is a very sweet dog. She is not as energetic but she does great with people. Scruffy does great on a leash and loves to walk. She also does well with new dogs she comes into contact with. Scruffy will make a good house dog. For more information on this great pet, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://hanovercounty.gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.

Dawn of Victory: Breakthrough at Petersburg, March 25-April 2, will be presented at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Tavern. Edward Alexander will talk about his book, “Dawn of Victory: Breakthrough at Petersburg, March 25-April 2.” “Dawn of Victory” tells the story of the men who fought and died in the decisive battle of the Petersburg campaign. Readers can follow the footsteps of the resolute Union attackers and stand in the shoes of the obstinate Confederate defenders as their actions decided the fate of the nation. Since 2011, Alexander has worked at Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg, and previously with Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Tuesday, Jan. 24 An Evening of Colonial Dance will begin at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Tavern. Those attending will experience a night of learning and fun as they “kick up their heels and explore dance in the colonial period.” Local author Joshua LeHuray, an educator at the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, co-director of the Janesville, Wisconsin, Fife and Drum Corps, and an adjunct history professor at Rappahannock Community College, will kick off the evening with a presentation on his new book,
“Virginians Will Dance or Die! The Importance of Music in PreRevolutionary Williamsburg.” Music was everywhere in preRevolutionary Williamsburg — from the public musical events enjoyed by the masses to the lavish private concerts and dances of the elite classes. Drawing on contemporary newspaper accounts, this book is the first to explore how some 18th-century Williamsburg citizens experienced the growing musical world around them. After hearing about dancing and its place in colonial society, the Colonial Dance Club of Richmond will take center stage to give a live demonstration of the popular steps of the 1700s, along with live music and audience participation. Following the interactive demonstration, LeHuray will be available to sell and sign copies of his book and guests will have the chance to tour historic Hanover Tavern by night. Light refreshments will be served. Cash bar available. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for the general public.

Sheriff shares safety tips for those holiday shopping HANOVER – Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, has released a list of holiday safety tips for residents during the Christmas shopping season. He recommends the following: When leaving your residence, be sure you pull the door shut and lock the deadbolt along with making sure the windows are locked (the doors should be locked when you are home as well). If you will be returning after dark, leave a light on. Inform a family member or a friend of your travel plans. When you leave your residence to travel during the holiday season, please leave your lights on a timer. And they should be set up in “your” living pattern. Always choose parking spaces in welllit areas, as close to busy entrances as possible. Do not park near anything that can conceal you from observation. When shopping don’t leave valuables inside your vehicle. Cell phones, laptops, pock-

There is safety in numbers. Always have your keys in your hands as you transition from one safe place to another. (Home to car, car to store, etc.) Once you’re in your vehicle, lock your doors immediately and move on. Always lock your car, even if you’re leaving if for only a short period of time. And make sure all windows are completely closed, even if your vehicle is parked at your residence. Never lay packages or your purse on top of your vehicle. When shopping, keep your purse close to your body and keep a firm grip on it. Stay alert, pay attention to your surroundings, be aware of anyone around you. NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Dave Ramsey says that more than 4.5 million people have positively changed their financial future through his Financial Peace University (FPU). He said the nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for longterm financial success. The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Ramsey on DVD followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, see FPU, pg. 23

In this day and age of ordering presents of the internet, be careful of delivery people. Make sure you are expecting something to be delivered. Confirm their identity. This means check their company identification and also check out the vehicle they are driving before you open your door. After the big day of celebration and the trash is ready to go out, try to put all the boxes inside of a trash can/ bag. This will hide any and all descriptive packages of “your family’sâ€? gift receiving. Please remember to contact the Sheriff ’s Office immediately if you see or hear about suspicious activity by either calling 911 or 804365-6140. Information submitted by Sgt. James R. relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing. FPU will be held in Mechanicsville at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Messiah Lutheran Church and School located at 8154 Atlee Rd. in Mechanicsville. Contact the organization for more information or to register. Through common-sense principles and small-group accountability, Ramsey said FPU gives people the tools they need to change their behavior and succeed financially. On average, Ramsey said that families who complete FPU pay off $5,300 and save $2,700 in the first 90 days. Following the class, he said nearly 94 percent of those families budget regularly. “FPU will not only transform the way you handle money, but also your marriage and other areas of your life,” Ramsey said. “This isn’t a boring financial class. We make learning about money fun and easy to understand so people in every situation can benefit from the information.” He said he knows first-hand the pain that financial stress can cause. After creating a net worth of more than a million dollars by age 26, he quickly lost it all.
Since then, Ramsey has helped families and individuals across the country learn how to get control of their finances and avoid debt so they don’t have to experience the same pain he did. FPU lessons also include guest speakers Rachel Cruze, speaker and daughter of Dave Ramsey, and Chris Hogan, counselor and speaker for the Dave Ramsey organization. After purchasing a membership each participant receives a workbook, Dave Ramsey’s Complete Guide to Money, an envelope system and an audio CD library. Participants also will have access to budgeting forms and MP3s of all the lessons. For more information, or to purchase a membership, go to www.daveramsey.com. About Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey has authored five New York Times best-selling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership and Smart Money Smart Kids. “The Dave Ramsey Show” is heard by more than 11 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations and digitally through podcasts, online audio streaming and a 24-hour online streaming video channel. There are 50-foot trees, an 80-foot tunnel of lights, dancing snowmen, singing Santas and Christmas trees and more fun surprises. New this year is an additional 150-foot light tunnel. The expanded light show covers two miles of The Meadow’s property. Along with the dazzling light show, Santa’s Village will be open throughout the event. New this year is a Christmas Bounce Fest in the Fun Zone! Several inflatables of different sizes and shapes, along with a

There also are vendors for gift shopping and food and drinks available for purchase. “We are expecting a good turnout throughout the season, and we look forward to welcoming guests of all ages,” Pierson-Jolliffe said. “Come early — weekdays are always best — and make your holidays bright all season long!” For more information and to buy discounted tickets, visit IlluminateLightShow.com. North explodes for Big River Rivalry win By Wayne Epps For the Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – One week after winning the 5A state title, Highland Springs quarterback Juwan Carter and three of his teammates continued their winnings ways. They capped their high school careers as part of the North team in the Big River Rivalry high school football allstar game at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon. The North team defeated the South team 59-14. Carter led the North with 244 yards passing and three touchdowns. He was joined by teammates Jordan Wall (linebacker), Mekhi Becton (offensive line) and Aaron Motley (defensive end). “It was really icing on the cake,” said Becton. Saturday marked the fourth iteration of the Big River Rivalry, which features area seniors from north and south of the James River. The North has now won three of the four games. Henrico’s Gerald Glasco, coach of the North squad, said that the players picked up the offense well in practice, finishing with 448 yards in the game. And, in addition to Carter’s numbers, St. Christopher’s quarterback John Damgard added another 105 yards passing and two touchdowns. “They just understood what

They were excellent to have.” The quarterbacks certainly didn’t have a problem spreading the ball around. Ten receivers caught passes. Hanover’s Kirk Shaffner had two receptions for 49 yards and Atlee’s Queshon Baker had one for 11 yards – and he threw one completion for 42 yards. “It seemed real natural,” Glasco said of the chemistry between the quarterbacks and receivers. “But, again, that’s why they’re all-stars. They all came
to work every day, and they all worked hard throughout practice and it kind of clicked on, if not day one, the second day for sure.” The game was tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the North blew it open in the second as it outscored the South 36-8 on rushing touchdowns by Hermitage’s Jordan Hall and Varina’s C.J. Jones, touchdown passes from Carter to Dobrucky
and from Damgard to Andrews and a 50-yard interception return for a score by Douglas Freeman’s Ja’Kari Williams. Jones’ touchdown was set up by Baker, who converted an interception on a pass intended for him into a fumble recovery – and an effective gain for the North. MECHANICSVILLE – The youth are in charge on Hanover county’s gymnastics teams this season. While each team has a handful of seniors, most teams are dominated by talented – yet frequently experienced – younger athletes. Last year, Patrick Henry’s team went farthest, advancing to the Region 5A South tournament. All four county teams had representatives at the Virginia High School League Group 5A state tournament last February. Despite graduations, all four teams hope to build upon those successes this year. Confederates dominate in holiday tourney By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – LeeDavis sent six wrestlers into the final round of its Lee-Davis Holiday Classic tournament Saturday. Brooke Point, hard on the Confederates heels, likewise sent six wrestlers into the final round. But Lee-Davis made the most of its opportunities. Of its six finalists, five finished as champions while only four Black Hawks finished with titles, and the Confederates easily clinched the team championship by a margin of 242.5 to 195.5. Two other local teams finished among the top 10. King William was sixth with 86 points. Patrick Henry was ninth with 81. Hanover finished 17th with 51 points. “We had a good tournament. I’m definitely pretty happy with the way the guys wrestled,” said Lee-Davis head coach Craig Spruill. “We had two guys who weren’t at their best, but we had other guys step up – so really, we just competed as a team.” Spruill noted that the Confederates had a good lead going into the final round, in part because f the bonus points generated by Lee-Davis 138pounder Garrett Plummer, who led the way with five pins in

tion, so I had to do anything and everything to get the ball back,” Baker said, who wasn’t surprised he got the ball back. “When he caught it, it was already loose, so I stripped it out from him.” The North carried a 42-14 lead into the half and never trailed. “We were focusing all week,” said Damgard. “It didn’t feel like an all-star game, like we felt as
if we were a team, like bonding with the guys. And feels great that we put some points up.” Baker agreed. “It was great. It was fun, being out there with other teammates, with other guys from other schools just getting to know the guys,” Baker said. “Great people. Great coaches. Just a great team to be on.” On defense, the North gave up just one touchdown, on a
4-yard run by James River’s William Noble in the first quarter. The South’s second and final touchdown of the game came on a fumble recovery by Petersburg’s Huckeeve Bailey that was returned 39 yards in the second quarter. Lee-Davis’ Jamon Coffey was part of a secondary that helped shut down the South offense with one of four interceptions by the North squad.
“I just had to represent my school the best I could,” said Coffey, who had to juggle basketball practice – he is a leader of the Confederates’ squad – with preparation for the Big River Rivalry. “I’d go to basketball practice, then come straight to all-star practice, so it was a bit tiring, but I got through it – and I’m pretty satisfied with the results.” Among the other defen-

L-D girls, Hawk boys get seconds in meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Western Albemarle came out the big winner in the Hanover Hawks Holiday Swim Invitational at Collegiate School Aquatic Center Saturday, sweeping the boys and girls championships. The Warrior girls just edged second-place Lee-Davis 292286. Western Albemarle won the boys title in more convincing fashion with a 52-point margin over second-place Hanover, 401-349. Atlee finished fifth in both the boys and girls standings. Hanover’s girls finished seventh and Patrick Henry’s girls finished 12th. Lee-Davis finished seventh in the boys standings and the Patriot boys finished ninth. Western Albemarle head coach Dan Bledsoe said his team enjoys coming to the Hawk Invitational – and that pays off in points. “It’s a good opportunity to get a prelims and finals meet in a championship-type pool,” Bledsoe said. “The kids look forward to it. They get to spend the night at a hotel and have fun. It’s a great team-bonding experience. You see the energy come out in the races.” The Warriors dominated team standings through depth,
but local teams had more winners. The Lee-Davis girls had several multiple winners. Their 200-yard medley relay team of Lacey Kramer, Katelyn Vieni, Molly Sheffield, and Sara Gaston opened the girls competition with a win and a new meet record in 1:50.41. Sheffield set two more meet records with wins in the 200 individual medley (2:09.56) and 100 butterfly (2:09.56). Kramer had three more wins: in the 200 freestyle (1:54.32), 100 freestyle (53.22) and as part of the 400 freestyle relay team (with Gaston, Morgan Boyle and Autumn Angus) in 3:43.66. Gaston had another win in the 500 freestyle in 5:06.86. Atlee’s Olivia Fisher finished with three wins and three meet records: in the 200 freestyle relay with Kenly Norton, Ashley Zicafoose and Sonora Baker with a time of 1:41.26; in the 50 freestyle in 24.06, and in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.58. Her teammate Baker set a meet record with a win in the 100 backstroke in 58.38. Hanover’s Patrick Townsend also had three wins: in the boys 400 freestyle relay with Marshall Brooks, Jonathan Moss and Ross Newton with a time of 3:20.67; in the 100 butterfly (51.14) and in the 100 backstroke 51.65. Hawks fall to Trinity, beat Hopewell in TDIT Staff reports sports@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – Hanover’s Hawks surprised No. 9 Hopewell Saturday at Clover Hill High School with a 71-60 upset to advance to the fifth-place game in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament. The Hawks faced Highland Springs – itself a 71-62 upset winner over defending TDIT champion St. Christopher’s in a consolation-round game at Clover Hill Saturday – in the Richmond Coliseum Monday after this edition went to press. Hanover had three doublefigure scorers in its win over Hopewell: Ryan Payne with 18 points, Nick Zona with 17 and William Fahed with 13. Hopewell had faced a quick turnaround after going three overtimes Friday night before falling to Benedictine 92-91. Malik Jefferson had 17 points, Faizhon Taylor scored 13 and Tyquan Young scored 12 for Hopewell. The Blue Devils’ Jalen Jefferson left the game with an ankle injury. The Hawks entered the consolation bracket after falling to

Jaylin Ross scored 11 points, and Ryan Payne chipped in 10 to lead the Hawks. Hanover led briefly against a team which featured former Hawk Jason Wade, jumping out to a 3-0 lead early before Anthony Kayode knocked down a 3-pointer for the Titans to tie it. Trinity went on to a 157 lead after the first quarter. The Titans scored 31 points in the second quarter for a 4618 lead at halftime before cruising through the second half for their eighth win of the season. on numbers, but makes up for it by a versatile squad. “I have quite a few allarounders this year,” Foster said. “That’s kind of nice.” The Confederates lost a trio of high-impact seniors to graduation – Madison Godsey, Brooke Morris and Kylie Stonebraker – but they already had a core group of younger athletes ready to step up into the leadership. Among them was Britney Blowers, who showed a lot of promise as a freshman last year. With just two seniors – Heather Cline and Sarah Rice – and three juniors, Lee-Davis expects its sophomores and
freshmen to shoulder a lot of the burden in building a successful season. New Raider head coach Lee Withers takes over a team that lost three seniors – including state participant Hailey Hulser – to graduation. They’ll also be missing another state participant, sophomore Elizabeth Bosley, who begins the season out because of injury. Atlee seniors Jordan Gilardi, Nikki Johnson, Lexi Martin and Addie Scarborough will anchor a complement of 16 gymnasts – but which lacks all-around competitors. “We don’t have a lot of allarounders,” Withers. “We have
a lot of girls that do one or two events, and they do well at those events.” Hawks second-year head coach Caitlin McIntire begins the season with a squad that has zero seniors. They lost two seniors – Katelynne Gillis, a state competitor, and Bridget Davis – to graduation. This year a quartet of juniors will lead the team: Kaley Albert, Emily Holcomb, Devin Roberson and Kameron Stanley. She has a number of talented sophomores and freshmen who have helped the Hawks win one meet and finish as runner-up in two others so far this season. “We’re actually a pretty

ATLEE LITTLE LEAGUE 2017 Baseball & Softball Registration
Hello Hanover Families! Do you know why we celebrate Christmas every year?
It’s because God sent his perfect son, Jesus, to be born as a person in this life and to become the Savior of the World! The Bible tells us that if we believe in Jesus Christ to be our Savior, we can be saved and have a home in Heaven. At Truth Baptist Church we offer many children’s activities and family church services! We would love for you to join us on Sunday!
