ECHANICSVILLE – Usually, Hanover County Public Schools students are rooting for the Beaverdam area to stay snowed in and give them another day off from classes. After Saturday’s snowstorm dumped as much as 8 inches of snow in the eastern part of the county, they were rooting for the Cold Harbor – or possibly the Old Church – area to extend their weekend. With the nudge of dangerously cold temperatures moving into the area Sunday night, Hanover County schools joined nearly two dozen other area school systems in eliminating the suspense of waiting for an announcement regarding school closings on Monday. Instead of forcing eager children to wait until Monday

Hanover Historic Bus Tours now booking for May 20
T
he ever-popular Hanover Historic Bus Tours are back and are now taking reservations for the May 20 tour. Throughout Hanover County lie dozens of state historic markers and historic sites that have been preserved to tell the stories of the earliest Native American inhabitants, the rich colonial history, the struggle for religious freedom and the fight for independence from the British crown. Hanover also has been the site of a number of Civil War battles, including: The Seven Days Battles of the Peninsula Campaign and Gaines’ Mill, Battle of Cold Harbor, Battle of North Anna and the Battle of Haw’s Shop. From battlefields, churches, homesteads, farms and, of course, the well-known Hanover Courthouse, Hanover has something for everyone — for the casual visitor to the avid American history buff. With so much history, the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department invites you to explore the county and learn what makes Hanover so historically significant and special. Tours are being offered of Hanover County that are generously supported by the Richmond Region Tourism office and Hanover County. Each tour includes a boxed lunch, snacks and water. Transportation for the day will be via chartered bus and tours are led by Richmond Discoveries. When registering for tours, be sure to note any special dietary needs on your registration form. The next historic tours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, and are $20 per person. Participants will board the bus at the Hanover County Government Complex at 7497 County Government Complex in Hanover.
There are two tours to choose from include: Towns of Eastern Hanover: Learn about the settling of Old Church before its Civil War history, and how Mechanicsville got its name. Tour Ashland and learn about the development of the town with the railroad and the college. Meet Judith McGuire, a Civil War refugee, and hear about her time in Ashland during the Civil War, including the excitement that occurred when Union troops set fire to the train depot. As a special treat, enjoy a tour of Center of the Universe Brewing Company. Towns of Western Hanover: Many of the towns of western Hanover developed around the railroads as settlers moved away from the rivers. Explore the development from the mid-19th through early 20th centuries of Doswell, Beaverdam, Montpelier, Ashland and Atlee with the guide. Visits Pop’s Country Store (Beaverdam), Sycamore Tavern (Montpelier) and the former Mt. Hope Methodist Church in Doswell. In Ashland, meet Judith McGuire, a Civil War refugee, and hear about her time in Ashland during the Civil War, including the excitement which occurred when Union troops set fire to the train depot. Lunch will be hosted by the staff at Church of Our Saviour in Montpelier where you also will hear the unique story of how the church was founded. Those interested are encouraged to come alone or bring a family member or friend. Trips typically fill quickly, early registration is recommended. We’ll see you on the bus. Questions can be directed to Hanover County Parks and Recreation at 804-3657150, parksandrec@hanovercounty.gov and trip details and registration may be completed at: www.hanoverparksrec.com. Unique resolution: being wrong more often
| Reader Views
By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and, more importantly, you’re doing something.” — Neil Gaiman When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, I typically embrace most of the same ones everyone else does. And so, like many others, I usually find myself this time of year making promises to lose some weight, stick to a budget, be more organized, and do at least a half dozen other things that will help turn the me of 2016 into a healthier, less stressed, more productive version. This year, however, even while I grudgingly
promise to pay some mind to health and budget, my real focus in on different, never-beforeattempted resolution: This year, I would like to be wrong more often. Maybe that didn’t come out quite right (especially since I’m already wrong about plenty of things, every single day — just ask my husband). What I actually mean is that, this year, I would like to make sure that I spend more time and energy challenging the things that I already believe to be true. I would like to learn more about things I have only a passing understanding of, and have more discussions with people who don’t think like I do. I would like to have my own assumptions tested and, in the case that they are based on misinformation, misjudgment or just plain old factual inaccuracy, I’d like to correct them. The spark for this idea, I’m happy to say, came from one of our readers who was kind enough
several months ago to point out that I had been getting something quite wrong, quite often, in these weekly columns. As Alice Araks explained, I had erred several times when I referred to the United States as a democracy, when in fact it is a Constitutional Republic. Ms. Araks was, I must note, incredibly gracious in her email. And, while I am a bit embarrassed that I went for so many decades embracing this nugget of incorrect information, I thanked her profusely for taking the time to set me straight. It was the first of many changes to my thinking that I hope will occur as I try to embrace this New Year’s resolution, one that will likely lead to some discomfort, sure, but also growth. And if that isn’t the goal of all resolutions, I’m not sure what is. Roslyn Ryan is editor of The Goochland Gazette.

Atheists claim ‘great’ Christmas
Just a few words regarding a flash spot on TV news – a high sign post – don’t remember where by the American Atheist Association: “Make Christmas Great Again – Skip Church.” Now, I realize that many believers do neglect the Christ of Christmas; however, do you have any opinion as to what the atheists could mean by “Greater Christmas?” What/ how would they be celebrating? MLK Day to celebrate city’s history Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 16, Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site invites the public to a special program celebrating the city’s unique and diverse history. At 2 p.m., Kitty Snow, author of Up & Down Church Hill and From a Richmond Streetcar, will share photographs of Richmond taken by her great-grandfather, Harris Stilson, 100 years ago. This one-hour presentation will take place in the park’s visitor center, located at 600 N. 2nd St., and is free of charge. In early 1917 America was a nation on the verge of modernity, with Model Ts and

streetcars vying for space on Richmond’s bustling streets. Stilson was a middle-aged streetcar operator who captured thousands of pictures of Richmond just as America entered World War I.
“He recorded AfricanAmerican recruits leaving for boot camp, troops returning from France, and the people they left behind,” noted Snow, who inherited his collection of over 3,000 photographs. Snow has been hard at work organizing and sharing her great-grandfather’s collection with the Richmond community and compiling oral histories to accompany the images. Following the presentation visitors are invited to take a tour of Maggie L. Walker’s home, which is open for the holiday from noon to 4:30 p.m. For more information about this event and the site, visit www.nps.gov/mawa or on Facebook at www.facebook. com/MaggieL.WalkerNHS/.

by Sager throughout the years of his battle. But, those who knew him best realized quickly that Sager was much more than a fashion statement, and his commitment to the game, and, more importantly his dedication to family, quickly overshadowed his tendency to wear outlandish jackets. Those who knew Sager best said the premiere broadcaster didn’t need prompting to pull and display pictures of his five children from his briefcase. Weeks before his death, Sager was more concerned about making it to his son’s basketball game than the ultimate and untimely end that was lurking around the corner.
So, for us who don’t follow the NBA and knew Sager only from his other stints in other sports, or stopped flipping channels just because we noticed a guy wearing a coat that shouldn’t have been stitched, Sager’s legacy involved much more than a stellar professional career. Every life has a message, and Sager’s passing reminds us that there’s often much more to a person than what we see on the surface. When Sager received the Jimmy Valvano courage award last year, he didn’t liken his diagnosis to the death sentence it actually represented, and explained the news only
enhanced his zest for life, love for family, and desire to contribute each and every day. And there were certainly some tough days for Sager and his family and he struggled through treatments and operations, always with a goal of returning to work and life with his family. Sager’s message lives on in the many lives he touched in more than three decades of broadcasting. More importantly, his courage and dedication will serve as beacons for those who suffer, and persevere. I’ve heard all my life about an old saying that states clothes make the man, but, in Craig Sager’s case, nothing could be further from the truth.

For more than three decades, he displayed a professionalism and thoroughness that almost made viewers forget the unforgivable designs from his sport coats that seemed to attack the camera. Sager was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014 and underwent three bone marrow transplants and more than 20 full rounds of chemotherapy during his struggle for each and every day. Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Q. Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Peaches, 461973, is a 6-year-old female pitbull. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Peaches is a sweetheart who has been in the shelter since mid-November. Sadly, her previous owner passed away. Peaches is a playful girl who does well with people. She is very playful and energetic. Peaches does very well on a leash. She will do best as an only dog at her new home. Tommy, 466404, is a 2-year-old male domestic short-haired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Tommy has been in the shelter for about a week now. He was surrendered by his owner. Tommy has been mostly an outdoor cat but could adjust well to indoors based how he has acted at the shelter. He uses the litter box very well. Tommy is a little skittish but has gotten much better with handling. He will benefit best with someone who can give him a lot of TLC (tender loving care). For more information on this great pet, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. ASHLAND — Seven student-athletes from the Patrick Henry High School (PHHS) boys’ and girls’ cross country teams recently traveled to Hoover, Alabama, to compete in the United States of America Track and Field (USATF) 2016 National Junior Olympic Cross Country championships. The small group of Patrick Henry’s committed long-distance runners competed in four races at the Junior Olympic national championships. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams competed in a 4,000-kilometer (4K) race and a 5,000-kilometer (5K) race. Competing in separate events by gender, the 4K races consisted of boys and girls ages 13 to 14; while the 5K races consisted of boys and girls ages 15 to 18. The boys’ and girls’ 5K race, which is the standard length for high school cross country, combined two age groups into each event.
Those on the Patriots boys’ cross-country team who ran in the national competition were: Carter Burcham, freshman; Noah Campbell, junior; Blake Mason, junior; and Braham Raso, sophomore. Finishing the boys 5K race with a time of 17:40, Campbell placed 27th overall out of 331 runners in the nation for his age group, nearly two spots away from going All-American. “Junior Olympics was good, I thought I did pretty well myself,” said Campbell, reflecting on his proximity to becoming an All-American athlete in high school. Also running in the same race were Mason and Raso, finishing in 168th and 180th places respectively, completing the course with times of 18:16 and 18:20. Campbell’s team finished third overall. Asked if he was considering his potential in long distance running as a future in college once he graduates, Campbell said “Oh, yeah, you know, it’s funny I never really gave it thought see CROSS, pg. 17

before this year — before I actually started getting better at it. But the more and more I run, the more I realize how much I love it.” “I’m still a junior, so I’ve still got a year,” he said. Campbell said he hopes to continue improving his times throughout the remaining track seasons of his junior year, and is looking forward to his next, and last, cross-country season in high school. “This race was a mixture of two age groups, [I’m] not
sure why,” said Patrick Henry cross-country coach Jeremy Dobrinski, referring to the 5K events. Burcham, the freshman on the boys’ Junior Olympics squad, competed in the 4K race, placing 322nd out of 429 runners and finished with a time of 15:04. Athletes from the Patriots girls’ cross-country team who competed in Junior Olympics were: Jennifer Macias, junior, and Alycia Richardson, sophomore. In the girls 5K, Macias finished the race with a time of 22:46. The 5K race for the girls
also was a mixture of the same two age groups as the boys (ages 15 to 18). Landing at 96th place in the nation, “she was only one spot away from All-American status for 17-18 year olds,” said coach Dobrinski. “It wasn’t too cold or hot, and we didn’t get any rain, so the conditions were pretty decent,” Macias said. Macias said she plans to attend college after she’s finished with high school, and said that she wants to wait and see how her next two years as a long-distance runner go before making any decisions
about running at a collegiate level. Running in the same race of 146 girls, Richardson placed 120th with a time of 23:53. Emmy Joyce, an eighthgrader attending nearby Liberty Middle School also runs with the Patriots. Patrick Henry allows for eighth-graders attending nearby Liberty Middle that are interested in running cross country or indoor track to practice and compete with the high school teams. While eighth-graders’ scores don’t count at meets during the regular seasons,
they are still able to compete privately at events such as ones run by USATF and Junior Olympics. Joyce ran the girls’ 4K in 16:35, finishing 264th out of 376 of the most qualified athletes from around the country in her age group (ages 13-14). Aside from being employed as a physical education teacher at nearby Liberty Middle, Dobrinski also serves as the head cross country coach at PHHS. He also is the assistant coach for the long distance teams during the high school winter (indoor) and spring (outdoor) track seasons.

Del. Peace launching new mobile-friendly website Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – Del. Christopher K. Peace (RHanover) will launch his state of the art redesigned website, www. chrispeace.com, today (Wednesday, Jan. 11) to coincide with the start of the General Assembly Session. Peace invites citizens and constituents to visit and sign up for his newsletter if you are not already receiving it. You may sign up at the new website using a simple form. “I am very pleased to announce my new website,” Peace said.
“This new site is a state-of-the-art platform designed to communicate with residents of the 97th District and the Commonwealth. The site will feature detailed information on important public policy issues, which may be considered by the General Assembly and regular updates related to state government. I will continue to utilize social media and to regularly send my e-newsletter to keep citizens up to date on issues of importance to our community.” The site integrates social networking pages (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), along with legislative and campaign updates. Peace said he will highlight legislative efforts that advance
realistic and workable solutions to the challenges currently facing Virginia. The new streamlined site was designed by Hanover County native Taylor Pace, owner of Taylor Pace Web Development, http://www.taylorpace.com/. In addition to the delegate’s new website, www.chrispeace. com, he can be found on Facebook (Christopher K. Peace), on Twitter (@DelCPeace), and on Instagram (delcpeace). Peace represents Hanover, King William and New Kent counties.
Senior Advocacy Day to be held Jan. 25 at General Assembly Senior Advocacy Day set for January 25th at the Virginia General Assembly RICHMOND -- Annual Senior Advocacy Day at the Virginia General Assembly will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Senior Advocacy Day is an opportunity to support senior issues and concerns. It also is an occasion to learn about the work of Virginia legislators and policy makers. During the 2017 session, advocates for Older Virginians are urging members of the Virginia General Assembly to protect funds in the state budget for care coordination
and other essential services for older adults. Members of the General Assembly are asked to take note of the growing older population throughout the Commonwealth. On Senior Advocacy Day, advocates will visit members of the General Assembly to thank them for supporting programs that help older adults remain in their homes and communities. Support from the General Assembly ensures that older Virginians are able to continue to live in their communities. Communities are continually assessing livability as a key concern.
Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) play important roles in creating livable communities by providing home delivered meals, friendship cafés for lunches/activities, transportation, adult day care, personal care, respite support for caregivers, in home care, homemaker assistance and related services. Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging and the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging (V4A) invite advocates for older Virginians to join Senior Advocacy Day in support of essential services for older adults, persons with disabilities

Armentrout passes 1,000-point milestone By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – On the same night Atlee’s Alyse Armentrout was honored for a scoring feat, she also played hero. The Raiders’ senior received pre-game praise after scoring her 1,000th-career point in a Tuesday-night victory over Varina, then scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had eight blocks in a 65-59 win over rival Hanover Friday. Hanover led Atlee at the half, but Armentrout dominated the third quarter, knocked down a pair of fourth-quarter free throws to extend an Atlee lead to two possessions, and recorded a game-clinching block to seal the victory. “I feel like a lot of players on the team look up to me to pick up the energy when we get down, but really it’s a whole team effort,” Armentrout said. “If I’m the only one who is picking it up, or the only one that’s not, we’re not going to advance forward as a team, so it’s truly a team effort overall.” After falling behind 16-10 in the first quarter, Hanover used the hot shooting of Jordan Davis and Sarah Wright combined with tough interior defense against Armentrout to take a 25-24 halftime advantage. But in the third quarter, Armentrout was able to assert herself on both ends, helping

rebounds. Armentrout was humble in speaking of surpassing 1,000 career points. “It’s such an honor to reach that standpoint and that mark in my career,” she said. “When I came in my freshman year, I was really nervous and shy. I didn’t really know my position at all. Just being able to work with my teammates to get this goal was a great accomplishment.” In the boys game that followed, Hanover’s Ryan Payne scored 30 points to lead the Hawks to a 64-55 victory over Atlee. The senior forward hurt the Raiders inside and out, scoring on a variety of jumpers and highlight reel dunks. “We knew that he was a good player. We knew that we were just waiting on him to get healthier. … Now he’s healthy and he’s starting to get that hunger,” Hanover coach Darren Thornton said of Payne. “He’s been doing it the last couple of games. This was the big game, but for the last couple of games he’s been the big difference maker for us. Patrick Henry, Lee-Davis split doubleheader ASHLAND – Those hoping for singular bragging rights from the Lee-Davis at Patrick Henry girls and boys basketball games Friday night left disappointed as the two schools split the double-header along gender lines, with the Confederate girls and Patriot boys each emerging victorious against their crosscounty rivals. In the girls’ game, the Confederates were much better from the free-throw line than they have been in recent games, converting 76 percent of their attempts en route to claiming a 46-32 win. “We’ve been working on free throws a lot during practice,” said Lee-Davis head coach Alvin Puller. “It was an area we needed to improve, and we showed improvement in that area tonight.” The improved free-throw performance was complemented by a monster effort by LeeDavis center Codie Helig, who contributed 20 points (including one 3-pointer and eight of 10 free-throws). She proved a juggernaut the Patriots couldn’t contain. “Tonight was about playing aggressive,” Puller said. “We wanted to play an aggressive game. We came out slow, but we made some adjustments and got aggressive.” The Confederates trailed after the first quarter, but a dominant defensive performance that featured a handful of blocked shots by Helig and contested rebounds by the Lee-Davis defense shut down the Patriot attack in the second quarter. The Patriots managed only a single field goal in the entire quarter while the Confederates put 19 points on the board. The boys’ game was almost a
mirror image of the girls’ game, with Patrick Henry coming out strong and shutting down the Lee-Davis offensive attack in a 60-34 Patriot win. The Confederates only managed 11 points in the first half and followed that performance with a 3 point third-quarter. “We’ve been preaching defense from the beginning of the year, and it’s finally starting to come together for us,” said Patriots head coach Randy Anderson. “It looks like it’s finally coming together for us.” While the Patriots played a stifling full-court press on defense, the Confederates played with a lack of focus and intensity. “They punched us in the mouth at the start, and we didn’t respond. You’ve got to come out ready to play every single night, and we just didn’t do that tonight,” said Lee-Davis head coach Chad Bishop. “We were finally playing relaxed and having fun out there in the fourth quarter, but that was too little too late.” The outcome was no surprise to the Patriots’ Anderson. “We’ve been having great practices since the new year,” he said. “The kids have been pushing each other and challenging each other, and this is the final product. This is the potential this team has had all along.” “One of our goals this season is to win the county,” Anderson said. “We fell short against Hanover, but we’ll see them again. I just couldn’t be prouder of these guys, though. They played tough tonight and I’m proud of them.” Bishop echoed that pride in his own team’s spirit. “They kept fighting down to the end,” he said. “Plus we had some guys who hadn’t played a lot of minutes this season, they played really hard. Yellow Jackets win close one against Marlins By Jordan Bondurant For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — RandolphMacon and Virginia Wesleyan have played some memorable regular season and postseason contests through the years, and on Wednesday night another meeting between the Yellow Jackets and the Marlins produced another memorable result. A Daniel Noe 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in regulation gave Randolph-Macon a twopoint lead. When Wesleyan’s Andre Banks missed the potential go-ahead 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, Macon’s Jermaine Johnson was given a golden opportunity to ice the game. Johnson, a 5-foot-10 junior, took full advantage. He made both free throws, giving the Yellow Jackets a 67-63 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win. “I’m very proud of the effort our guys showed,” said Randolph-Macon head coach Josh Merkel. “We expected to come in and win this ballgame. Our guys went out there and made the big shots when they needed to and found a way to come out on top.”
Nick Liberante for The Local
Randolph-Macon’s Michael Taylor takes a shot in the first half of the Yellow Jackets’ 67-63 win over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday.
The Yellow Jackets (7-5, 30 ODAC) extended their winning streak to four games. The win was also the team’s ninth in 11 meetings with Virginia Wesleyan (8-4, 1-2). Tempers flared early on the court. Marlins senior Khory Moore drove to the basket, but was met in the paint by Randolph-Macon’s Boris Ngundji. Moore didn’t take
kindly to Ngundji’s hard play, and both Merkel and Virginia Wesleyan head coach Dave Macedo quickly stepped in to make sure cooler heads prevailed as the two exchanged words and shoves. “I think this game brings a lot of excitement from both sides,” Merkel said. “Our guys just had to remember to keep their composure and focus on
winning the game.” Despite shooting 44 percent from the floor after 20 minutes, the Yellow Jackets took a 29-24 lead into the halftime locker room. Still, the lead never got larger than six before the Marlins came back to tie and eventually take a brief lead. Wesleyan built a five-point advantage with 7:26 to play in
regulation, but the Yellow Jackets managed to keep the Marlins within striking distance. Leading 63-62 with less than a minute to play, Wesleyan generated a turnover and a 2on-1 fast break going the other way. Moore, who finished with a game-high 27 points, missed the layup underneath. Johnson secured the rebound for Randolph-Macon as the
Marlins called timeout. Johnson drew attention under the rim on the ensuing possession, but found Noe wide open. Noe drained the 3-pointer, giving the Yellow Jackets the 65-63 lead. “[Noe]’s just a great shooter and a really talented basketball player,” Merkel said. “We know he can make those big shots, and that’s what he did.” Noe finished with a teamhigh 20 points. He added six rebounds and four assists. Johnson was the only other Yellow Jacket in double-digits. He tallied 12 points, grabbed seven boards and had two assists. It’s all ODAC opponents from now until the end of February for the Yellow Jackets, who play two of its next three games in Crenshaw Gym. But Merkel says he and his team aren’t looking further ahead than whomever’s next on the schedule. “We’re taking things one game at a time, one possession at a time,” he said. “I’m just excited to get back to practice and getting ready for our game at Bridgewater on Saturday.” Jordan Bondurant can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.
Young, multitalented roster leads Patriots to gymnastics win By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Youth took the lead in a gymnastics tri-meet at Hanover High School when Patrick Henry junior Sierra Baxter claimed wins in three out of four events as well as the all-around title to lead the Patriots past Atlee and Hanover Wednesday night. In the Patriots’ case, the team is young and small, but

multitalented. “We only have 11 girls, whereas I think Atlee has 17 girls and I think Hanover has 13,” said Patrick Henry head coach Kylie Foster. “We have way less girls, but all of our girls do most events. They are not specializing in just one event … which is kind of nice.” The Patriots had several serial placers. Baxter won the floor performance, balance beam and uneven bars and finished third

in the vault. Jennifer Flores was second in the beam and in a four-way tie for second in the vault and finished fourth in allaround points. Madison Spence won the vault and finished in a tie for third on the floor. Baxter has been one of the leaders of the Patriots’ squad since she was a freshman. Her growing leadership skills has been a boon to Foster – in her first year as a gymnastics coach, not just as a head gymnastics
coach – as Foster adjusts to the new team and sport. “She has the best attitude. She is uplifting,” Foster said. “I’m thankful more for that than her skill level.” Atlee’s Bell Beregeron finished second in the all-around standings, with Hanover’s Sophie Vota third. Patrick Henry’s Brianna Dorsey and Kayleigh Bohn were fifth and sixth, respectively. Beregeron finished second
in the vault, third on the beam and in a tie for third on the bars. Fellow Raider Haley Frost finished second in the vault and fifth on the bars. Vota finished fourth on the floor, bars and vault and sixth on the beam. Her Hanover teammate Maddison Klump finished second on the bars and fifth on the beam. SHLAND – With all the events that take place in “The Center of the Universe,” it’s no surprise that this year’s Ashland Musical Variety Show will be using the theme, “Ashland Loves a Parade.” Rehearsals will get underway Monday, Jan. 16. The Hanover Arts & Activities
Center sponsors the every other year show. The Ashland Musical Variety Show takes the stage at the Blackwell Auditorium on the campus of Randolph-Macon College. noon Sunday. The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office responded to 79 motor vehicle accidents. Sgt. James R. Cooper noted that none resulted in serious injury. From midnight Saturday, Jan. 7, to midnight, Jan. 8, the sheriff ’s office received seven calls requesting the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Deputies responded to 75 traffic complaints and 63 disabled vehicles. “Due to the timing of this winter storm occurring on a weekend, citizens were able to make a conscious decision to stay home and off the roads. I am very thankful for this as it allowed our deputies to safely respond to emergency calls for service”, said Col. David R. Hines, sheriff. Battalion Chief Jason Williams, speaking on behalf of Chief Jethro Piland of Hanover Fire-EMS, said their departments/stations responded to 59 storm-related incidents, ranging from traffic crashes, falls, frozen pipes, and fire-related incidents. The information was gathered from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.

Lyle Alexander, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, said that, while it is not unheard of for the southeastern part of the county to get more snow than the northwestern part, the normal pattern is usually otherwise. “It happens more often that your heavier snow is to the north rather than to the south,” Alexander said. “It’s very common for Richmond to not get as much snow as the western part of Henrico County. … The official Richmond tally [from Richmond International Airport] is usually several inches less than what they might get in Short Pump or someplace like that.” The storm produced headaches for forecasters. Throughout the week, snowfall predictions for much of the county were increased from 1 to 3 inches earlier in the week to 4 to 8 inches by late Friday night. Much of the eastern part of the county received snowfalls at the upper end of the range. Most of the models were predicting the heaviest band of snow to roll through the southeast corner of Virginia, with Norfolk to Virginia Beach getting the bulk of the snowfall. surprise, with warm air aloft shoving that band of snow northward. “The warm air aloft got farther north than we planned on,” Alexander said. “One model … forecast that freezing line up at 10,000 feet to get all the way up to Norfolk. That was kind of a surprise. “As that happened, that meant the heavier snow that occurred to the north of that warm air aloft also got pushed to the northwest. So you had sleet in Norfolk and you had heavy snow pushing up into Hanover County as well.” According to a National Weather Service graphic, most of the eastern part of the county received 6 to 8 inches of snow. The far northwestern part of the county fell in the 1 to 3 inch range. The storm was significant, but no recordbreaker. The National Weather Service reported a one-day snowfall of 7.0 inches at Richmond International Airport and in Ashland – a tie for 25th place since the weather station was established at the airport (formerly known as Byrd Field) in 1930 and a tie for 26th place since Ashland’s weather station was established in 1893.
