Reformation’s 500th anniversary observed with sales, blood drive By Melody Kinser Managing Editor MECHANICSVILLE – St. Paul Lutheran Church will be observing the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on Saturday with a blood drive to signify, as Pastor Rodney Bitely said, “the shed of Jesus’ blood on the Cross of Calvary.” He said the Lutherans are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, which was “when Martin Luther on Oct. 31, 1517, posted his ‘Ninety-Five Theses’ on the chapel in Wittenberg, Germany.” “He wanted to have a debate about what was going on in the church (Roman Catholic) at the time that was ultimately known as the Reformation,” Bitely said. With the 500th anniversary, he said churches throughout the Richmond area are taking part in a blood drive, which
will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The church, located at 8100 Shady Grove Rd. in Mechanicsville, also will be holding its Annual Spring Yard Sale from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bitely said the sale is unique in that everything is being sold for $1. The rain or shine event will feature clothes, books, toys, baby items, NASCAR memorabilia, and lawn and garden items. Hot dogs and drinks also will be available for purchase, as well as baked goods. The pastor also said that the “all for $1 sale is an idea they picked up from another Lutheran Church in Northern Virginia to help folks in need.” With Virginia Blood Services on-site, Bitely said “People can shop and take part in the sale” and then take advantage of an “easy opportunity to stop by and give a unit of blood.”

Christian school hosts virtual race to benefit autism group Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE — Students, staff and community members from the New Hanover Christian School teamed with Reaching 4 Autism Miracles Inc. by hosting a virtual race to celebrate Autism Awareness Month. The charity event began in March and ended on April 29 with a medal ceremony to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments. This virtual race could be completed anytime, anywhere during the race window — March 7-April 25. Participants of any age or ability could walk, jog, run or bike the distance of their choice.
Any distance could be completed at the gym on the treadmill, outside, walking a dog, using a pedometer’s daily steps or at another racing event. The race did not have to be completed in one day. Participants could choose to do a 5K in one day or spread out that 3.1 miles by doing one mile a week, biking ½ a mile on the weekends, etc. During the virtual race, students enjoyed tracking their steps on the playground and even challenged their teachers. Students took their virtual race with them on their weekend and spring break trips to places like Kings Dominion and Disneyworld see VIRTUAL, pg. 4

where over 6 miles were logged in one day. Preschoolers also logged miles biking at the beach and in their nieghborhoods. It was a great opportunity to show the school families how to help others while also spending time together exercising. Staff and community members challenged one another on who could get the
most steps in one day, did laps around the school together, and were surprised at how many miles they were able to log doing lawn work, going to Costco, at the beach, and walking their dogs. Some participants were seasoned runners who combined local road races and challenges with the virtual race for charity, while others who aimed to hit a 5K (3.1mile) mark were surprised and proud to be able to hit marathon distance (26.2
miles) by the end of the race. Participants were emailed their ongoing mileage totals after submitting proof to the race coordinator and also checking the race board at school, which displayed the participants racing on a track. The students said they loved walking by the board each day to see who was winning. Overall, all participants logged over 1,595 miles total — all to help raise Autism Awareness through NHCS’s

chosen charity — Reaching 4 Autism Miracles Inc. Reaching 4 Autism Miracles Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded by the parents of a child who was diagnosed with autism at age 3. After his diagnosis, they learned that there were resources and programs available for their son but were surprised at the costs of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy (O.T.), summer camps, and Autism Advocates. These resources helped their own child learn to communicate verbally by age 4, and this organization was created to award grants to families so that more people can afford them. New Hanover Christian School decided to team with Reaching 4 Autism Miracles to help build their grant pool and reach more families who may qualify for financial assistance. The race registration was completely tax-deductible and will help families who need financial support for the therapy, camps, classes and advocates of their loved ones who have been diagnosed with autism. The spectrum of verbal and nonverbal abilities, challenges and set-backs is so large that autism cannot be labeled into one category. Educate, Advocate, Understand, and Love were 4 of the puzzle pieces that were addressed during this Autism Awareness Month culmination, and the hope is that more people have had a chance to think differently about autism and learn from it. The students were reminded that their race helped other children their age be able to go to special camps and that they should be proud that they helped others. New Hanover Christian School is a preschool for ages 2½ through age 6 and would like to invite other area preschools and local celebrities to participate in their virtual race next year. Vendors and businesses who would like to donate their goods or services to next year’s event are invited to join in the early planning process. Interested parties can look at the public Facebook page — Running 4 Autism Miracles and send a participation inquiry. Rino Balducci makes sure city remembers impact of Italians By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local RICHMOND — “It’s great to be back in the old neighborhood,” Rino Balducci said as he worked his way through a small crowd of acquaintances gathered at Ann Hardy Plaza at Pollock Park to recognize a portion of Highland Park that played a vital role for Italian immigrants living in Richmond at the turn of the 20th century. Adjacent blocks of the community that surrounds the Plaza were once home to a community of Italian immigrants who settled in Richmond. Some were stonemasons and artisans from Tuscany, while others brought their unique knowledge of food and opened restaurants in the Richmond area. Rino’s father, Umberto, was one of those early immigrants who migrated to

The elder Balducci built a 17-room villa on the property to accommodate his 12 sons and daughters. “It turned into a flourishing villa, typical of villas in Italy,” Rino told the assembled group at Pollock Park. “He planted all kinds of fruit trees … and grew all kinds of vegetables and herbs,” explaining that his mother used the herbs in delicious recipes your taste buds will thank you.” Pole Green Park is located at 8996 Pole Green Park Lane in Mechanicsville. “As you enter the park, about ½ -mile down, look for the multipurpose fields on the left hand side, the Food Truck

On Sunday, a group of former residents of the old neighborhood gathered for the unveiling of a state historical marker recognizing the accomplishments of this segment of Richmond’s population. Saying ‘Thank you’ to those who matter
Mom takes unique approach in how they celebrate
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor He was dressed in camouflage fatigues sitting quietly in the waiting room when he caught my eye. As my mother was getting seated, I approached him and said, “Thank you.” He seemed surprised and asked, “For what?” I immediately responded, “Your service.” He humbly, with his head tilted a bit downward, said, “Thank you.” Coming from a family filled with military veterans, the conversation launched with me talking about my uncle being on the USS Raleigh when Pearl Harbor was bombed and a female cousin
breaking that glass ceiling in the late 1970s or early 1980s by becoming a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. I then asked him if he had served overseas. Again, with his head somewhat bowed, he said “Yes” in a hushed tone. I did not pursue his military service as it was obvious he was comfortable talking about veterans and the sacrifices, but his story was one he did not seem prepared to share. So, in a moment that is so not me, I did not ask him anything else about his service. Mom and I continued to share stories about the service in my father’s family. I can never resist telling about the heroics of Dad’s oldest brother at Pearl Harbor and the second eldest who did
everything he could to avoid service (he even jumped in a river about 30 miles from our hometown in an attempt to escape). The soldier, whose last name eludes me a little more than a week later, was a true gentleman, a fine example of our country’s military. It was a pleasure to talk with him and when Mom was called back into the doctor’s exam room, I stood and once again thanked him. This is probably the third time I’ve written about such encounters. With each, I’ve received a blessing in acknowledging their efforts. Like the “I love you” theme in last week’s column, add “Thank you” to your routine when you see someone who has or is serving our country.

For they are the very reason I celebrate, having them defines me. I proudly wear the title even after I am long gone. I bet you’ve never really thought about it, but it’s been on my mind a lot lately. For the past 12 months, I’ve watched my son’s ability to walk steadily decline, and each step has become more labored and difficult. For every Duchenne patient, this is a time in their life when the disease (Muscular Dystrophy) begins a process of taking things away from them.
Things they once knew and loved, enjoyed and treasured are snatched from them one by one until there is nothing left. We’ve lived with the knowledge that time would eventually claim Jack’s ability to walk, and other things would follow, but I’m not sure I ever took the time to appreciate or fully inhale the steps he’s taken up to this point, each one with a dogged determination and gutsy approach that can only be described as heroic. But, life goes on day-to-day, and,

each morning, my two girls and Jack would prepare for school and take the long walk from my condo to the car and eventually to school. Although the walk from my front door to the parking lot is less than a block, the girls often leave Jack and me in the dust as our pace gets slower and slower. I noticed him struggling more and more with the walk, leaving him exhausted and weak when completed. So, we had a talk several months back.

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Maya, 476136, is a 1½year-old (estimated) female pitbull. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm check negative. Maya is a special dog. She came to the shelter last month after being kicked by a horse. Luckily, the veterinarian determined that she did not receive any serious injuries. Since then, Maya has been absolutely great. She loves to run and play around with other dogs. She also does great on leash walks. Maya will do well with anyone looking for a playful pet. Savannah, 476627, is a 7-month-old (estimated) female domestic short-haired feline. She has had her first set of vaccines. Savannah is a sweetheart. She came to the shelter as a stray. She has a playful personality. She loves human interaction. Savannah is well domesticated and litter trained. She might do better as an indoor cat. Human trafficking problem tops Community Resources program ASHLAND – Human trafficking is the second fastest growing criminal industry in the United States. A harrowing statistic presented by the Hanover County Department of Community Resources on April 25 during a panel program was that one out of every six runaways could become victims of the sex trafficking industry within 48 hours of leaving home. Jen Miller of Safe Harbor, an organization providing support to survivors of sexual and domestic violence, shared statistics proving the issue is close to home. In 2015, there were 4,136 cases of sex trafficking reported in Virginia, with Richmond being among the top 20 cities. One major reason is Richmond being in close proximity to the Interstate 95 and Interstate 64 corridors. Young people are often the victims of this crime. “There has never been a harder time to be a kid between the ages of 11 and 18 then
right now,” Miller said. “Just being in this age group puts kids at higher risk.” She noted the insecurities that come along with being that age are magnified by social media, which heightens insecurities predators tend to use to their advantage. Signs that parents should be on the lookout for with their own teens that may put them at greater risk or indicate possible signs of sex trafficking include history of sexual abuse, history of running away, signs of physical abuse, unstable home environment, presence of older boyfriends or girlfriends, substance abuse of harder drugs, unexplainable presence of gifts such as new clothing, makeup, cell phones, etc., withdrawal or lack of interest in previous activities, and gang involvement, especially in girls. There are certain red flags that may indicate someone is a victim of human trafficking, Miller said, and should be reported to law enforcement. These could include:
The person being fearful, anxious, depressed, submissive or paranoid; Signs of physical abuse; Few or no personal possessions; They also may not have control of their own finances; Seemingly they cannot speak for themselves. Spreading the word and helping to dispel myths about human trafficking will also help. The panel, which included FBI Special Agent Melvin Gonzalez, Jen Miller, and Mary Hampton Cook of Gray Haven, was organized by the Department of Community Resources in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Gray Haven provides support for survivors of human trafficking, helps with victim intervention and identification and collaborates with other organizations to help fight human trafficking. WILLIAM GERMANI William Austin Germani, 19, of Crozet, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born on January 30, 1998, Austin graduated from Western Albemarle High School, class of 2016, and was a freshman at Christopher Newport University. Austin’s smile was as unmistakable as his wit. Old and new friends alike note that his warmth was felt by all those in his presence. His smile was described as lighting the room, ever-
present, and contagious, while his hugs were warm and freely-given. At a CNU memorial service for Austin, the Vice President of Student Affairs remarked that Austin already understood the importance and responsibility of distinguishing himself during his time on this earth, which he chose to do in the GERMANI pursuit of helping others, often before himself. Examples of Austin’s humanity include sitting up at night to help fellow students with their homework, helping one friend reverse their decision to drop out of college, and learning to help another friend control their panic attacks. The enormity of his loss is palpable in the voices of those who knew and loved
him. Austin is survived by his brother ,Colton Germani, his mother, Ginger Pomfrey Germani, of Crozet, and his father, Alan Edward Germani, of Richmond, as well as his grandparents, who include his maternal grandmother, Sandi Slate, of Richmond; his maternal grandfather, Ron Pomfrey, of Mechanicsville; his paternal grandfather Tony Germani of Louisa County, his paternal grandparents, Harriet and Don Taylor of Midlothian; and his maternal great-grandmother, Virginia Slate of Richmond, as well as special aunts, uncles and cousins. He also is survived by his girlfriend, Darby Stephens, whom he met at CNU and proclaimed the “woman of his dreams.� A memorial service to honor Austin’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at the Crozet United Methodist Church. Les answered the call to serve his country during World War II as a Technical Sergeant, assigned to the 351st Bomb Squadron. In 1950, after the war, he graduated from Virginia Tech. Les was a Mechanical Engineer for the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department for many years, retiring in 1985. He was an avid bridge player. Les is survived by his wife, Betty La Place; children, Leslie La Place (Thomas Gould), David Lacy (Joyce) and Angie Willis (Stuart); grandLA PLACE children, Douglas Gould, Caroline Willis and Luke Willis; nieces and nephews. ECHANICSVILLE — The WashingtonHenry Elementary School PTA 8th Annual Earth Day Festival was described by organizers as “a smashing success despite the uncooperative weather, which drove the event inside the building.� In its eight-year history, this is the first time the event was held indoors. “We’ve been very, very lucky with the weather in years past,� said Jennifer Bateman, event dhair, “but this year, with the call for rain all day and the possibility of thunderstorms, we could not risk everyone’s safety. The administrative staff was incredibly supportive as we figured out where to put 24 activities, 46 vendors, entertainment, food trucks, and a petting zoo.� The school saw great crowds throughout the
day as people from all over Mechanicsville came out to enjoy what has become a spring tradition. The family-friendly event does not charge tickets or an entry fee so children (and adults) were free to play games, make crafts, and pet animals as much as they’d like. Food trucks and a variety of vendors had items for sale. The event could not have gone on without the support of volunteers from Atlee High School, Deep Run High School, Hanover High School, Lee Davis High School, Boy Scout Troop 544, Girl Scout Troop 557, and the parents and staff of WHES. That indicates how important it was for my children to understand their heritage,” Gordon said. “It’s like being a part of living history so we’re excited to be here.” William Martin, director of Richmond’s Valentine Museum, said immigrant communities like the Italians in Highland Park added to the fiber and culture of the city. “All of the immigrant communities that have come to Richmond have made this a special place,” Martin said. “It’s added to our food, our culture, our architecture, and is part of Richmond’s history.” Martin said this event would open the door for exploration into other Richmond communities with special ethnic histories. “We’ve got so many of these

areas all over town — people who came here braving amazing odds and made contributions to this city that we don’t know. It’s time for all of those stories to come together,” Martin said. It’s a long way from Vicopisano, Tuscany, to North Highland Park, and the descendants of the families who made that perilous trip who stood and took pride as the marker was unveiled, and a piece of Richmond’s cultural history became permanent. What resulted has brought a cultural diversity to the city that most appreciate, perhaps best expressed by Hare in his remarks from the podium. “As my friend from the Valentine said, this would be a very boring country without Italians. What would we eat? What music would we listen to?”

For Rino, it’s an overdue symbol that finally notes the accomplishments, camaraderie and values of a group of people who fought discrimination and alienation to become an integral part of Richmond’s history. Jim Hare, director of Survey and Register for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, said the new marker was the result of the community’s involvement and generosity, and thanked the groups involved in its placement. He noted the Italian influences that dot the city, including the State Capitol building designed after a Roman temple. Like Rome, Richmond is situated on seven hills. “We owe that heritage to Italy,” Hare said during a brief ceremony at the Plaza Sunday.. The event also was attended by Signora Catherine Flumiani, First Counselor for Consular and Social Affairs at the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C. She told attendees she was honored to represent Italy at the ceremony and noted the importance of understanding the heritage. “It’s important for human beings to be proud of where they came from,” Flumiani said. Brenda Giannotti Stankus and Ray Garjulio were instrumental in researching and applying for the marker, while Rino provided the funding for

After constructing the villa on Young Street that became the hub of the Italian community, Balducci sponsored numerous Italian families who moved to Richmond and lived in apartments in Shockoe Bottom and eventually transitioned to North Highland Park. Italian immigrant and master artist and sculptor Ferrucio Legnaioli arrived in Richmond about the same time as Balducci and joined him in those efforts. Establishing a small studio in Scott’s Addition, Legnaioli and his 35 employees provided decorative stonework for many of the city’s iconic buildings. A statue of Christopher Columbus at Byrd Park is just one of the many local examples of his work. He, too, felt an obligation to share his good fortune and sponsored Italian immigrants. Jesse Gordon brought his daughter Grace to witness the unveiling. He’s the great-grandson of Umberto, and said the

Ashland approves $15.1 million budget for 2017-18 By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The Fiscal Year 20172018 of $15,123,700 (General Fund, $9,296,100, and CIP, $5,827,600) was approved last week by Ashland Town Council. Members also agreed to the appropriations resolution. The budget is the financial plan for the coming year’s expenditures, and the funds to be used that are identified in the budget are authorized by the appropriations resolution.
The FY1718 budget needed to be adopted before July 1, or Town Manager Joshua Farrar’s proposed budget would take effect by FARRAR default. Town staff had recommended adopting the budget and correspond-
ing appropriations resolution. On Tuesday, May 2, council members also voted in support of the 2017 Ashland Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Clerk of Council Joseph Collins outlined the master plan at an April 14 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting. “I really appreciate the amount of effort that went into this, [there was] a lot of detail, and I know that there’s some expertise on our parks and rec committee, and a lot of good thought
out ideas … this looks like a good workable [plan], but a foundational plan as well,” said Councilman Steve Trivett. Collins told council the most “eye opening” result from community engagement meetings that the parks and recreation department had with citizens of the town was that Ashlanders want to see an expansion in regards to the connectivity of trails, sidewalks and bike trails within the town’s limits.
A bike lane system also seemed to be of high interest in their findings, but, more importantly, the connectivity of these town-wide pathways. “We’ve had several comments about connecting Stony Run Trail to Dejarnette Park,” Collins told council. Ginna Cullen, a lifelong artist and art educator whose experience includes teaching grades, providing art professional development in several school districts, and teaching book arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, brought the credentials to serve in the juror role. She also serves as the Central Virginia coordinator for the master of interdisciplinary studies as well as a supervisor for student teachers. Cullen has hosted hundreds of workshops for educators, including presentations for the National Art Education Association in New York, Boston and Chicago. She also received the 2016 Central Virginia Advocacy Award for Art Education even after she retired from teaching at Louisa County Schools. She continues her work with school superintendents and administrators to protect and promote the programming of art education. Wayne Waldrop, president of the Board of Directors at the Center, welcomed guests

As a way to celebrate the arts by taking a closer look at a few of the many forms that art can take, guests observed artists portray their knowledge and passion in specific artistic expressions. The April 29 event included three demonstrations that focused on loom weaving, pastels, and raku pottery. Demonstrations included artists such as weaver Gigi Spicer giving viewers a closer look into the weaving process, Nancy Tucker exploring the use of pastels, and award-winner Betsy Taylor examining the methods and techniques of raku, an ancient Japanese form of firing glazes. Tucker is a member of the James River Art League, Metropolitan Richmond Artists Association and the Central Virginia Pastel Society. She exhibits locally with all these groups. Bowen said the Center is going to bring back “Music Under the Stars,” an outside event with a live band and food. “Music Under the Stars” programs are scheduled for July 21 and Aug. 25.

As the financial year comes to an end, the directors look at the funds available – holding a certain amount to run the Faire for the following year, donating the rest to local non-profits. “We take a vote, and disperse the ‘extra’ funds.� The last year they had extra funding, Foley said each director received an application for a grant-for-work that was
As the Ashland Strawberry Faire prepares for its 36th year, it’s important to realize that what started out as a “humble strawberry festival� in 1981 – has grown into a large event that celebrates the strawberry harvest in the region and provides sufficient support to local nonprofit organizations. Every year, nonprofit organizations can set up their booths at the Faire for a fee. If the nonprofits aren’t selling anything at their booths, they only pay a small administrative fee. The Faire also gives away what they call “grants-forwork� each year, where the nonprofits can work the day of the event to earn money for their groups. Foley said applications are offered by the directors to nonprofit organizations. “The main long-term grants are for the work done by Ashland Fire and EMS, Boy Scouts from Montpelier who help vendors set up and take down, and Comfort Zone Camp whose volunteers help run the Kid Zone,� she said. To date, fhe Faire committee has donated over $75,000 worth of funds to nonprofit organizations in the area. As a requirement for allow-

The Faire continues to offer 10 scholarships each year to Hanover County high school seniors,� she continued. Gillis attended R-MC, and served as the mayor of the town for 20 years. He initiated Ashland’s popular nickname, “The Center of the Universe.� She said four of the scholarships are given in memory of Tafi Yourtee. One senior from each of the county’s high schools who are planning to major in one of the performing arts are selected for the honor. Yourtee moved to the community after performing on Broadway in New York, and

will offer kisses by “a loveable pooch.� “This is the perfect photo opportunity for dog lovers,� Foley said. People can pay $1 to the Hanover Humane Society anytime between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to have a memorable moment in the kissing booth. The Humane Society also will be returning with dogs that are available for adoption. “Wouldn’t it be great to find your new furry friend at the Faire?� Foley asked.

In memory of Jay Pace, another four scholarships are given out to four seniors, one from each of Hanover’s schools that are planning to major in journalism once they graduate. Pace was the editor and publisher of the Herald-Progress, and received many awards during his tenure. The 10th and final scholarship is in honor of Norman Bugge, and awarded to a student attending Hanover Building and Trade School. “Norm worked for the telephone company that is now known as Verizon. In his spare time as a volunteer he was instrumental in getting the Faire’s stage built and the electrical panel wired among many other things,� Foley said. Each of the scholarships given out by the Faire committee is selected by the individual schools. They send out all the committee’s information to the guidance or subject departments at the schools, and they choose the winners. Betty LaPlace, board member of the Ashland Strawberry Faire, oversees the scholarships program. Foley said families and visitors are welcome to bring their own dogs to the event, so long as they are friendly and on a leash. Official Faire parking lots can be found east of the intersection of Patrick Street and Henry Street. From there, visitors attending the event can ride a trolley into the Faire. There will be two trolleys transferring people to and from the parking lots and the fairgrounds throughout the day. The Henry Clay Inn and the Mason Civic League sponsored both trolleys. Hanover Havoc Girls Basketball, which was established in 2013 to give girls the opportunity to play beyond the recreational leagues, has accumulated a number of accomplishments. It was started by TC Wilson with one team and has grown into five teams, with plans to add more. Seventy-five girls from Hanover County spread out on a 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and high school-aged teams. The girls play in area tournaments in addition to playing for their middle and high school teams. The 7th grade team will play in almost 50 games by season’s end in late June. The Havoc’s high school team recently went 4-0, winning the Zero Gravity’s Rumble in Richmond at the Siegel Center. They beat the Northern Neck Titans 55-34, led by Hanover High’s Emily Carr’s 19 points. The Havoc team is coached by Brandon Mayhew and Rebecca Parramore. Hanover County’s annual volunteer appreciation event is
more than an acknowledgement of award nominees and honorees, it is a gathering of community members who share a common commitment to service. Centerpiece creations in past years have been described as “amazing” and one of the highlights of the event.
“To capture the diversity of volunteer engagement within our community, we encourage you to create/donate a centerpiece representing your department /school/ or organization,” Lisa Adkins of Community Resources said. “They will decorate the tables throughout the celebration reception area

On Target Archery classes being offered ASHLAND — Has your child taken to the stories of Robin Hood and his expert bowmanship? Do the archery skills of Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games intrigue you or your youngster to
be just as precise? The On Target Archery classes are perfect for adult participants and children ages 6 to 12. Participants will learn about safety rules and equipment used in archery, instructed through proper shooting techniques, and have lots of time to practice their newly learned skills on the range. Plus, as an added bonus, youth archery students will receive a bow and arrows, plus safety gear to take home after the final class.

Adults may bring their own equipment if they have it, or gear will be provided. Classes will be held at three locations throughout Hanover County with pre-registration required. The schedules are: Pole Green Park from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays , June 6 through July 20 for youth, or 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, June 10 through June 24 for adults. Poor Farm Park classes for adults is held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays., July 3 through July 17. And the final location is
Courthouse Park for youth classes held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Fridays, July 7 through July 21. Youth classes are $75 per participant and adult classes are $45 per participant. Balducci, Hawks shut down Atlee offense By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – For a while, it looked like Atlee might give Hanover a run for its money when the two teams met on the Hawks’ home diamond Friday night. Then Hanover pitcher Antonio Balducci stepped up to the mound. Balducci, in 5-2/3 innings of relief, struck out six while giving up three walks, two hits and one unearned run to ensure the Hawks held on to a 7-2 victory over the Raiders. The Raiders had two on base with one out in the top of the second inning when Balducci switched position from first base to the pitcher’s mound. He struck out the first batter he faced, then walked the second to load the bases before getting J.T. Fitzpatrick to ground out to end the inning. It was the second of three times the Raiders loaded the bases without getting more than one run across the plate. Balducci said he focused on giving his defense something it could handle. “In that situation, because I’m a sidearm pitcher, I try to roll a lot of ground balls – give my defense a double-play ball and get us out of the inning,” Balducci said. MECHANICSVILLE – Heading into Wednesday night’s matchup against No. 1 St. Christopher’s, No. 2 Atlee was coming off of its first loss of the season, at Douglas Freeman on May 1. Little more than three minutes into Wednesday’s game, the Raiders found themselves down three goals on their home field. But they fought back to tie it before the end of the quarter and kept the game tight throughout. Then finally, with 3:57 to play, Atlee got the breakthrough it needed. Bartal’s last-second stop saves Hawk victory By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – As Hanover’s boys soccer contest against visiting Atlee entered injury time, Hawk goalkeeper Connor Bartal was sitting on a 3-1 lead. But the Raiders had not given up, and it took a lastsecond, diving save by Bartal to secure a Hanover victory. As injury time began, Atlee broke away down the left side of the pitch. Bartal came out to meet the Raider attack and got called for an illegal tackle inside the box to set up a penalty kick. Bartal moved to the right, the ball went to his left, and Atlee needed just one more goal to tie it. With less than 30 seconds to go, the Raiders broke free again. Hawk defenders tried to thwart the attack, but one Raider got off a shot. Bartal dove to his left and trapped the ball. “I’m a senior. But that margin lasted less than a minute as St. Christopher’s (9-5) senior midfielder Sheldon Towell responded for the Saints to put the game in its fifth tie, 8-8. Later in the quarter, Atlee found what it was looking for. It

was a man-up play, but Rice said it wasn’t the look typically seen in that situation. Rice said teammate Drew Miller, a sophomore attacker, saw an opening for a pass, and then he just caught it, looked and turned for the shot. “Once the ball went in, and you heard the noise, you really could feel the win coming,” said Rice. “We knew at that point that we just had to hold it.” Crawford said that his team didn’t kill the clock like it should’ve against Douglas Freeman. But it was a different story Wednesday as the Raiders

Inside-the-park homer caps perfect outing By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Peyton St. George threw a perfect game. But Kelly Warren may have earned the highlight of the game in Atlee’s 11-0 shutout over host Hanover Friday night. Warren, who already had a triple earlier in the evening, took advantage of a shallow Hanover defense in rapping a three-run inside-the-park home run in the top of the fifth inning. Shortly after, teammate Casey Barret, who had a 3-of-4 outing, hit a two-run home run to put the Raiders ahead by 11. The mercy rule was invoked and the game ended after St. George struck out the Hanover side in the bottom of the inning. With two on and two out, Warren showed bunt when she began her at-bat in the fifth inning. The Hanover defense adjusted to defend against the small ball, and Warren took advantage of its configuration when she hit her home run. “The infield was playing in and the outfield was playing in, so I knew I had to try hard to slap it out of the outfield,” she said. “I hit a line drive, I’m pretty sure to the right-center gap, and I just kept running.” The Hawks tried to make a play, but the throw to the plate was too late. innings. “Once we settled in and went through the lineup one time, got settled in and made some adjustments to what we were doing, we were ready to hit the ball hard,” McIntyre said. “We talk about it all the time – if we’re going to take a lead we might as well hold it. When you’ve got a defense like [ours], you’ve got an outfield that plays hard like they do … it gives you

Hanover scored three runs in the first inning to give Balducci a cushion to work with. “They did what they needed to do. We made mistakes. MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover’s girls tennis team closed out its regular season with 8-1 victory at Lee-Davis Wednesday. Now the challenge for the Hawks is to keep to its winning ways through the Conference 20 team tournament, which began after this edition went to press. The Hawks are well positioned to continue its success,
however, as they return all but one of their top six from last year’s state finalist team. “That’s where our [strength] is,” said Hanover head coach Lindsey Hein. “From one through seven, we’ve got some good talent.” The best match of the day might have been the No. 3 singles in which Mattie Moon held off Lee-Davis’ Mary Crawford 2-6, 7-5, 10-8. “Both did a great job of playing through,” Hein said.
