16-member committee agrees there are no easy answers to rail impact By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local

HANOVER — There are no easy answers. That’s the consensus as 16 members of a Community Advisory Committee (CAC) wrapped up its first meeting to discuss the impact of the proposed Washington, D.C., to Richmond Southeast High Speed Rail (DC2RVA) project. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) has received additional time to devise options to increase rail capacity through

the Ashland-Hanover region before making a formal recommendation to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The FRA is scheduled to release a draft environmental impact study for the entire corridor next month, but recommendations for the Hanover portion of the project will not be included until the citizens advisory meetings conclude. DRPT director Jennifer Mitchell convened the first of six scheduled meetings and told see DPRT, pg. 5

ASHLAND – Paula Drumheller, a school counselor at Henry Clay Elementary School, has been selected as the 2017 Hanover County Public Schools Teacher of the Year. She is the first school counselor in the division to receive this distinguished honor. The announcement was made during a mock staff meeting. Drumheller received a surprise visit from Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Schools, who presented her with the award. Drumheller was joined by her family who also took part in the surprise. Drumheller has been employed with Hanover

County Public Schools since 1996. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Wheeling Jesuit College and Master’s degree from Radford University. Drumheller said, “I am humbled and honored to be chosen as the first school counselor to represent Hanover County as Teacher of the Year. While I may not be a traditional teacher, I believe this shows the importance that the faculty and administration at Henry Clay, as well as our division leaders, place on social and emotional learning. These skills are the basic foundation of academic and career success, and it is a great privilege and responsibility to be part of an educational

environment that strives to educate the whole child.” “Paula puts the student first and foremost in every situation. No matter what she has going on, she approaches every child with patience and empathy. And while dealing with multiple situations, she still manages to run classroom guidance and small groups to incorporate a comprehensive counseling program. Paula is a consummate professional and fully deserving of Teacher of the Year,” said Karla Allen, coordinator of Counseling Services. Teresa Keck, HCES principal, said, “Mrs. Drumheller is an exemplary school counselor whose passion for supporting children, teachsee TEACHER, pg. 18

DPRT convened its first of six community advisory committee meetings last week at the Hanover County Administration Building. The panel is tasked with exploring alternatives to a plan that increases rail capacity and affects passenger and freight train volume in the county.

rails for passenger trains. Although rail demands for freight are expected to increase, Pete Burrus, DPRT’s chief of rail, said the improvements in the corridor are targeted to increase passenger capacity. “The demand is already here … the capacity we are adding is for passenger use, but more freight will be running up and down this corridor.” A single train car can carry four cargo containers, or the equivalent of four truckloads of freight. Tunnel expansions in Northern Virginia have allowed CSX to stack containers, doubling its hauling capacity. The high-speed rail project is designed to remove truck traffic from already congested roads in the corridor. The committee is comprised for four Hanover representatives, three employees from CSX, three from Randolph Macon College and three from the Town of Ashland. Also included on the panel are one representative from the Richmond Regional Transportation Planning Organization as well as three representatives from DPRT. County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. and Beaverdam District supervisor Aubrey M. “Bucky” Stanley

are joined by Carey Carlisle and Linwood Attkisson on the panel, while Ashland Mayor Jim Foley and Town Manager Josh Farrar are joined by Kristin Reihl to comprise the town’s representation. They are tasked with studying alternatives for the Hanover route or identifying new options and then reaching consensus with a recommendation to DRPT. The agency will then formulate a recommendation for submission to the FRA. Consultant Carey Burch said the options are varied from the no-build option that leaves future options limited or build options that could include additional tracks, bypasses, or diversion of freight trains to an optional route like the Buckingham Branch that runs from Doswell to Richmond on old RF&P tracks. DPRT staff also considered tunneling through the Town of Ashland or running a line down the medium strip on I95. All of the options provide their own set of unique challenges and costs. DPRT hopes to submit a final Environmental Impact Study for the Hanover corridor

that includes route options to the FRA by fall. Since the department first announced the Tier II study in 2014, various citizens groups have formed to oppose the expanded rail lines. While Ashland residents have strongly opposed the third rail option, western Hanover stakeholders are equally against the western bypass option. Stanley took time at the conclusion of the meeting to express his concerns. “This has always been sold as a passenger project, but I’m hearing a lot about freight,” Stanley said. “I don’t see any benefits to the citizens of Hanover County or the Town of Ashland with this. That’s where I’m at right now.” But CSX representative Randy Marcus said this project is a passenger-centered effort. “We have capacity to handle our current freight and provide for our projected freight growth.” It all boils down to options according to DPRT director of policy Chris Smith. “What we are looking for here is better service,” Smith said. “We want to provide more train options for Virginians and we want to cut down travel times and give people more choices.”

the 16-member panel,” Tonight will be a lot about education, a lot about presenting you all with information and allowing you to ask questions.” Recognizing the amount of public concern and community interest, DRPT acknowledged the need for the advisory committee in an effort to gain insight and comprise alternative. It’s a tough needle to thread as stakeholders examine impact to the community while still considering the need for increased rail capacity through the region. Even with the concerns, Mitchell said the need is well defined exemplified by one look at the traffic on Interstate 95. “We are working across the state to increase passenger rail,” Mitchell said. “The Commonwealth is looking for mobility in this corridor (I95), but also to make passenger trains more viable and offer more capacity in the future.” The committee is examining a stretch of the corridor that extends from U.S. 295 in the south to Doswell in the north. Mitchell said the Commonwealth’s rail goals include increased reliability, better frequency of service and improved travel times. The committee is tasked with researching alternatives to the proposed three-rail proposal through the Town of Ashland or the alternate route identified as the western bypass, among others. “Really, what we are trying to do is make sure we’re applying a very structured, transparent process,” Mitchell said. “One of the things we heard during the draft of impact statement was that there was a real need and desire from the community for more information and for more opportunities to provide input as well.” CSX owns the tracks that run through the center of Ashland and Amtrak leases the

Wulf explains why he is stepping down as AMS chief (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Tom Wulf, executive director, Ashland Main Street.) Dear Ashland Main Street Stakeholders, Thank you for allowing me to serve as full-time executive director for the Ashland Main Street Association for the past seven months. I believe that now is a great time to transition to a new director. Permit me to offer a little background on the position and explain why I have reached this decision. I joined the Main Street board in 2010, serving as chair of the Promotion Committee and subsequently as vice-president and president. The board created a part-time executive director position and selected me to fill it in late 2012. The new organizational structure helped us earn a Virginia Main Street Designation in 2013. In 2016, the town helped us fund a full-time director position as we continued to grow our organization and expand our programs. The board graciously allowed me to continue to serve as direc-

tor with full-time pay. I also currently serve on the board of the Ashland Museum and as vice chair of the Pamunkey Regional Library Board of Trustees. I continue to maintain valued partnerships with Randolph-Macon College, the Market Ashland Partnership, the Hanover Arts and Activities Center and the Hanover County Black Heritage Society. I have committed to several joint projects with them, and I believe my community involvement has been invaluable in building the success of the Main Street organization. The Town of Ashland has recently drafted a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Main Street that further defines the requirements of the executive director position and expands its responsibilities. I believe the additional responsibilities add value, and that the Main Street board should try to ensure those are fulfilled. With my current schedule, workload, and commitments to other organizations, I believe Main Street and the town will be better served with new talent in the director position. A fresh perspective

and a singular focus on the MOU requirements will help bring Main Street to the next level. As the role is now funded full-time, we can attract a successor at a competitive salary and I can provide transitional support. The prosperity of the Ashland Main Street Association is an important personal legacy for me, and I will do whatever I can to assure the organization’s continued success. In the next few weeks, the town will assist the Main Street board in posting the executive director position and accepting applications. I plan to be a part of the selection process, and I am confident we will find a highly-qualified candidate to serve our downtown. I want to thank the board, our sponsors, Randolph-Macon College, the town and our business community for making my time with Main Street extremely rewarding. I look forward to continuing to help Main Street make further contributions to Downtown Ashland in a different role.

Memorial Day brings back memories of special friend By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Trent Goodrich was the best athlete in our neighborhood. Whether it was a sandlot baseball game or a pick-up football game, the talented lefty always was the first picked and the side that got him usually won. Unfortunately, Trent grew up in an

era where the choices for coming of age males were limited. Well, at least, they were limited in a sense. If college was not your choice for a continuing career, the U.S. Army offered a persuasive alternative: a twoyear stint almost always ending with a tour in Vietnam.

When Trent got drafted, our neighborhood gang didn’t worry, because Trent came out of every situation smelling like a rose, and a few combatants in the jungle wouldn’t deter him or scare him. Months after Trent left for Southeast Asia, I got the disturbing news that my number had come up,

You know how it goes . . If it ain’t broke Very interesting article in the Richmond Times Dispatch about a move to have members of the Hanover County School Board elected. As the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” What school system in the Central Virginia region that has 30 or more school and all of its schools are SOL (Standards of Learning) accredited? What county school in the state of Virginia ranks first, second or third in the five major categories that are used in grading the performance of school systems? You guessed it: Hanover County Public Schools. see LETTERS, pg. 8

HCPS student advisory council seek real solutions ASHLAND — Student advisory councils are nothing new in Hanover County Public Schools. In fact, elementary advisory groups have been meeting on local campuses for more than a decade. But, there’s no denying that school officials and Hanover County School Board members are placing more emphasis on obtaining that unique and important point of view on important issues, and Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of schools, has emphasized the

ing more engaged and relevant as we prepare for them to be college and workplace ready,” Melton said. Dr. Robert Staley heads the secondary student advisory council and Dr. Melton leads the elementary side of the project. After wrapping up this year’s series of meetings in anticipation of the summer break, both educators said the process yielded good results and increased interactive communication between faculty and students. Melton said the panels are focused on customer service

Dr. Michael Gill, photo at left, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, said the student meetings were fun and informative and offered Hanover students “permission to dream.” Dr. Tricia Melton, Hanover County Public School’s director of elementary education, headed a student advisory group that established better rapport between students and teachers.

importance of the interactive meetings. “Under Dr. Gill’s leadership, we’ve had a new and improved process this year,” Dr. Tricia Melton, director of elementary education director, recently told school board members. She said the premise of this year’s meetings was “If you ask them, they will tell you.” “We wanted students to tell us what would make their schools better, to make learn-

with students being the customer portion of that equation. “We know that students and staff working together can make the best decisions about teaching and learning.” Students are divided into three groups and facilitators filter questions and answers designed specifically for their panel. When the session concludes, each group presents its best ideas or questions and group discussions occur. Responses to those ques-

tions are shared with Gill and school board members. “The results are also shared with all school principals,” Melton said. Questions include asking students to provide ideas that would enhance their school experience. The elementary student advisory council meets twice a year and the secondary panel meets three times annually. Two students from each elementary school comprise the 28-member panel. Four students from each county high school and two representatives from each middle school comprise the secondary student advisory panel. The focus of their meetings included relevance, innovation, creativity and collaboration. Melton said students were asked questions like “Is what you are learning in school helping you in your everyday life?” The students also designed plans for their vision of the classroom of the future. Some of those plans were quite innovative, including suggestions for movable desks and chairs, fun areas, labs and snack areas. At the end of the session students prioritized items that meant the most to them. Their number one concern was relevance in the classroom, followed by a desire for enhanced technology. Better restrooms and playgrounds also were high on the wish list. On the secondary level, the first meeting focused on relevance in the classroom while the second meeting addressed technology issues. A third meeting reviewed focus areas for the entire year and devised plans for next year. “Students want to be

always with the top down. On the surface, it appeared Vietnam has not changed Trent, or diminished his incredible talent to perform any task with stellar proficiency. He was a gifted graphic artist and obtained a job at a local firm doing what he loved. But something about Trent was different. Somewhere in a sticky jungle in Southeast Asia, a part of Trent had been left behind. It’s something he never talked about. But, those who knew him best realized the toll that war had taken on this soldier. He told me years later of

his experience as a tunnel rat in Vietnam. Trent’s agility and athleticism made him a prime candidate to enter the maze of enemy underground routes and scout them out for munitions or combatants. The work was harrowing, and one never knew what lurked around the next corner. It was a white-knuckled existence where one could only hope that your number didn’t come up. It was in one of those dark tunnels that Trent’s tour of duty ended as he approached one of those blind corners, placed his hand down on the damp ground and promptly felt the sting of a bullet in his lower forearm. He told a story

with poignant words that stuck in my mind for a lifetime. For Trent, life after the war seemed routine, but he noticed a decreasing energy level he attributed to age. After a day of work, he returned to his one bedroom apartment near Carytown and decided to take a nap. He never woke up. Some blamed the death on exposure to Agent Orange or other chemicals encountered in the jungle. To me, the cause was unimportant. On every Memorial Day, I think of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, soldiers who served and died for a way of life.

But, I also think of the ones I call silent soldiers who served and eventually made that same sacrifice for their country. Their long hair and beards stood in stark contrast to the sharply dressed and well groomed recruits we salute on this day; but their patriotism and commitment to freedom make them brothers in arms. I represent only one in a thankful nation that takes time each year to recognize and memorialize the service members across the globe and throughout the ages who gave their lives for their country. Words fall woefully short in expressing appreciation for extraordinary efforts and heroics that will go unknown to most. But, Trent’s sacrifice won’t go unnoticed — a tribute to all who served and committed their lives to a cause, to a nation.

What county school system has its board members focused in providing the best education for every student instead of wondering if their vote will please their constituents or will they be re-elected next term? You guessed it: Hanover County Public Schools. There also is another old saying that goes something like this, “Trying the same thing over and over again that did not work the first time is called stupidity. Well, trying something that is not working for other school systems I think you also can call stupidity. Look at the school systems in our area whose students are failing, schools are receiving warning or not being SOL accredited, constant fighting within the school board and/or in constant battle with other elected officials. What county has a waiting list of people wanting to

become its residence because of its outstanding school system? You guessed it: Hanover County. Now, folks, don’t let us be stupid and jump on a bandwagon that has time and time again led to destruction. That not only will be stupid, it will be dumb, dumb, dumb. Dan Johnson Montpelier

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Q. Hodnett

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Charlotte, 479192, is a 1-year-old domestic short-haired female feline. She has had her first set of vaccines. Charlotte came to the shelter a few days ago. She has turned out to be a sweet and loving girl. She loves to purr and rub against people. Charlotte seems to be well litter trained. She might do best in a single cat household. Nova, 476021, is a 12-year-old (estimated) female hound. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm check positive. Nova has been at the shelter for over one month. She is absolutely the sweetest dog. She is gentle and wants nothing more than to be by your side. Nova is older but that does not slow her down. She can run around and play with the best of them. Nova did test positive for heartworms and that will have to be treated. Please consider adopting this sweet girl. She will make a great pet. For more information on this great pet, as well

engaged in their learning,” Staley said. “Simply put, learning should be fun.” Secondary students on the panel wanted “hands-on and varied activities”, and appreciated teachers who were excited about their subjects. They also placed relevance high on their list of priorities. “Simply put, students wanted to know how their learning connects with the real world,” Staley said. Students also expressed a desire for collaborative projects and improved technology. Staley said the students genuinely appreciated the opportunity to express their thoughts and work with Gill regarding solutions.

“Our students overwhelmingly thanked Dr. Gill for the opportunity to serve on his advisory panel,” Staley said. “Their voices have been heard. Already action has been taken to incorporate what we learned from our students.” Gill described the five meetings this year as fun and informative, and said — although some of the ideas may seem far-fetched — the process was the real winner. “Our students need permission to dream. The thing that I noticed when they were coming up with ideas that may seem a little far-fetched, they were excited about coming to school.” He said the county would be unveiling some new classrooms that reflect some of the ideas expressed by the students. “You may see some of this become a reality.”

County officials kick off Comprehensive Plan update ASHLAND — In what might be described as a first step in a long process, Hanover County officials kicked off the 2017 Comprehensive Plan Update last Wednesday at Randolph-Macon College. Members of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors were joined by the Economic Development Authority and the Planning Commission as planning director David Maloney provided an overview of the process that included some of the major consider-

ations the plan would address. Like all localities in the Commonwealth, Hanover County is required to update its plan at five-year intervals. The Comprehensive Pan provides a blueprint for county officials to gauge and plan for future economic and residential growth and provide services that meet those community needs and services. “Traditionally, the Hanover County Comprehensive Plan is a plan that looks out 20 years into Hanover’s future,” Maloney said. “The purpose of this meeting is to set the table

The meeting produced only one action item, a reduction of the projected growth range to 1.0 percent to 2.0 percent versus the current rate of 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent. Maloney said population growth must be considered. “Based on the past 20 year trends and what we have been experiencing in more recent years, staff is pretty confident that using an average growth rate of 1.5 percent over the

Some members of the group questioned the association with age-restricted communities and the aging demo-

will approve the level service in the a.m. and p.m. peak hours. These improvements are all being made at the expense of the developer and constructed with the first phase of development,” Theobald said. “This is an opportunity to significantly improve this section of Atlee Station Road without the expenditure of public funds.” While some opponents accused the board of trading density for road improvements, some board members didn’t see it that way. Community meetings were held in July and October of last year and as recently as May 9 of this year. While the latest adjustments changed some neighbors minds regarding the project, others remained committed in their opposition. Bob Nelson, a Honey Meadows resident, expressed concern regarding time requirements and the improvements, citing the signal that was promised at the Honey Meadows intersection and, 14 years later, remains unfulfilled. He also estimated that with 8,000 Hanoverians living along Atlee Station Road, the traffic is sometimes “intolerable.” Several board members credited involved citizens with the changes to the project that reduced density and addressed traffic concerns. Cold Harbor supervi-

sor Scott Wyatt and Ashland supervisor Faye Prichard voted against the rezoning. “I do think this is a better proposal, but I don’t think it’s the best proposal,” Prichard said. In other matters, current Cold Harbor school board representative Norman Sulser was the only nominee for the upcoming open seat on the panel. Sulser has served for the past four years and is credited spearheading efforts like the College Academy and 10-point grading scale. Several speakers spoke in favor of Sulser’s reappointment. Sue Dibble also is seeking reappointment in the South Anna District but does face opposition in the form of two other candidates who offered their names for consideration. Dibble currently serves as vice chair of the school board and is completing her first four years of service. Lakisha Greenhow and Clara James Scott placed their names in nomination for the seat and asked supervisor Wayne Hazzard for consideration. Hazzard said he would meet with all three candidates and make a decision before the June 28 meeting when the appointments will be announced.

quality of life issues. Planning director David Maloney said the developer lowered the density to 2.93 units per acre and proffered significant traffic improvements that would address current and future congestion problems in the area. Jim Theobald, attorney for the Cool Springs Co., outlined a number of improvements, including a dual left turn lane on Honey Meadows Road at the intersection with Atlee Station Road. Maloney said those improvements, coupled with an already proffered and funded traffic signal at the intersection in question, would raise traffic levels from an F rating to a B in the a.m. peak hours. The signal light was proffered when Honey Meadows was built, but the county had been unable to obtain Virginia Department of Transportation approval for the project. Earlier this year, Hanover received a VDOT waiver approving the signal and that work will proceed. Theobald said the proffered improvements amount to approximately $1.5 million of road improvements at no cost to county taxpayers. “These road improvements

that only when it’s a top government position do people get defensive. I am neither a Democrat or a Republican but I do feel that all employees, whether they are members of the public or private sector, should be treated and held to the same work standards, rules and regulations. Members of government also need to have the same work standards, rules and regulations as their constituents. Why are people defensive? FBI

Director James Comey was just treated like someone in the public sector. I’m sorry for FBI Director James Comey for the public humiliation this must have caused him and his family, but I’m also sorry for all those in Hanover County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States who had to experience the same humiliation of losing their jobs due to firing or being laid-off. Who was indignant when it was done to the people of this country? Cindy Thomas Mechanicsville

Lee-Davis boys win region championship By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor GLOUCESTER – Last year, the Lee-Davis boys track team had a disappointing outing at the Region 5A South track and field championships. Coming hot off a Conference 11 championship, the Confederates faded in the sweltering heat at Gloucester High School and settled for second place. This year, the heat was just as harsh. The Confederate boys were feeling it, both literally and figuratively – again they carried the weight of another Conference 11 title on their shoulders. But this year, they didn’t fade. Lee-Davis did what it needed to do, outpointing secondplace Prince George to claim the Region 5A South boys team title. The Confederate girls likewise did well, finishing eighth despite its relatively small roster. Connor Scott led the Confederate boys with two wins: in the shot put (56-5.5) and discus (157-5). Scott, a senior, is not yet satisfied with his season. “Sweeping states has always been my goal since, like, probably sophomore year,” he said. “Last year, when I won the shot, I really wanted to sweep with disc, but it didn’t happen. So my last year I’d really like to do that.”

Lee-Davis runner Jeremiah Hankerson takes off on the anchor leg of the boys 1,600-meter relay in the Region 5A South track and field championships at Gloucester High School Saturday. The Confederate boys won the regional championship.

The Confederate girls also had a winner among their throwers: Megan Mann, a freshman, won the discus with a throw of 118 feet, 4 inches. “I’m feeling really, really excited,” Mann said. “I knew that there were other girls who are potentially – well, currently

– better than I am, but as far as everything went, my throws were able to get me where I really, really wanted to go.” The Confederates’ other winners were Nicholas Corbin (boys 110-meter hurdles) and Alex Slinkman (pole vault).

Region 4A East PORTSMOUTH – Thanks to another strong regional performance, Hanover will send its largest contingent to the VHSL Group 4A state track and field championships for the second year in a row. All three Hanover girls relay

teams qualified for the state meet after their performances in the Region 4A East championships at Woodrow Wilson High School Friday and Saturday. Rachel Crytser won the girls 3,200 run for the Hawks at the

MIDLOTHIAN – Less than midway through the first half of Monday’s Conference 20 girls lacrosse final, top seed and host Midlothian found itself in a three-goal hole. That’s when, with 13:27 to play in the half, Midlothian coach DeVoe Reagan called a timeout. Third-seeded Hanover had been having success in the draw circle, and so Reagan made some adjustments. He said he also tried not to tell his players what they weren’t doing up until that point. He said that, with this team, it’s more about keeping the players positive. “What we talked about see LACROSSE, pg. 26

Confederates win Conference 11 softball title By Brad Bess Richmond Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – Lauren Taylor and Kayley Scott were aware of their all-conference honors before facing Glen Allen at Deep Run on Friday in the Conference 11 softball championship. It wasn’t the individual accolades that added a touch of pressure. “The fact that we were the only-ever conference champs added pressure,” said Scott, “but I trust my defense and I have a lot of confidence in them.” Taylor broke a scoreless tie with a two-run triple in the fifth, hit a solo homer in the seventh and Scott allowed three hits while striking out six in the Confederates’ 7-1 win over the Jaguars for their fourth straight conference championship. “It’s always exciting,” said Lee-Davis coach Jackie Davis. “Every year is different.” Davis said the Confederates talked about working Jaguars starter Julia Fritz (the conference player of the year), making her throw strikes and driving the good pitches they saw. Lee-Davis was making good contact, “we were just hitting the ball right at somebody for the first couple innings, so it took a little bit to break through. But once we broke through, I think that just pumped them up,” said Davis. “They got a little bit more hyped and they went up there with a lot more confidence later in the game.” The Confederates had two hits in the game before Hayli Wagner drove a one-out single up the middle with one down in the fifth. Heather Childress followed with a double off the right-center field wall. Taylor followed with a two-RBI triple in just about the same spot. “I just knew that I had to do

Taylor led off the top of the seventh with a blast over the left-field wall. “I was hyped. I knew I wanted to hit that thing over somehow,” she said. Hanover girls earn berth in 4A East regional By Billy Fellin Richmond Suburban News MIDLOTHIAN – The Powhatan girls soccer team’s defense has been its hallmark all season long and showcased many of its strengths against a formidable Hanover attack during the Conference 20 semifinal at Hanover High School Thursday. Powhatan’s Kylie Maiolo grabbed save after save and the backers blocked passing attempts and through balls that frustrated the Hawks’ offense. The Indians kept away almost every attacker. Every attacker, that is, except Rachel Andrzejewski. The Hanover sophomore scored two goals – in the 13th minute and the 62nd minute – to lift the Hawks to a 2-0 win over Powhatan and clinched a berth in the Region 4A East tournament. “Rachel had her best game of the season,” said Hanover head coach John Andruss. “She stepped up tonight. by the Hawks defense. In the 26th minute of play, the game was suspended for over an hour due to a thunderstorm that started to rumble over the stadium. Once the lightning and rain stopped and the skies cleared, the teams resumed play. Hanover continued on the offensive until halftime, which was abbreviated due to the lengthy delay. “It’s always a little difficult,” Andruss said of the lengthy delay. “We were kind of expecting it to begin with because we had checked the weather beforehand. It wasn’t that bad.” The Hawks continued to throw the ball toward the Powhatan defense and time and time again they were able to deal with the onslaught. Hawks fall to Midlothian in league semis By Andrew Spencer for the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Midlothian, employing a stifling defense anchored by an excellent performance from goalkeeper Hemza Abadneh, ended Hanover’s season by shutting out the Hawks 1-0 on Hanover’s home pitch in a Conference 20 semifinal Wednesday night. The lone goal came in the first half, when Midlothian’s Chase Hebert headed in a perfectly positioned feed from Max Miller with 6:30 left to play in the half.

Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities, but the Hawks saw their chances miss by mere inches. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the goal,” said Hanover head coach Laurent Body. “We had many opportunities, but we couldn’t put it in.” Abadneh was spectacular in goal for the Trojans, stopping everything that came at him. More than once he benefitted from near-misses by the Hawks’ offense. Late in the first half, Hanover’s Connor Gilchrest launched a rocket from 25 yards

out that caught Abadneh out of position. But the shot ricocheted harmlessly off the crossbar and was cleared by another Trojan defender. In the second half, with time running out on the Hawks’ season, Steven Chick’s potentially tying shot just missed the net. The ball bounced off the left goalpost and right into the arms of Abadneh. “It really was a game of inches tonight,” Body said. “A couple of inches in one direction or another on a couple of shots, and we win this game.” It was a physical game by

both teams, and unfortunately for Hawks’ fans, that physicality resulted in the ejection of Hanover senior forward Carson Harris, who received his second yellow card of the night with 19:32 left to play in the second half. That meant a red card and automatic ejection from the game. Hanover’s John Dustin and Ashton Poythress also received yellow cards in the second half. Hanover claims top seed for regional By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover gets to claim top seed out of Conference 20 in the Region 4A East baseball tournament which began this week, but the Hawks had to settle for the title “co-champion” with Dinwiddie in the final year of the league’s existence. The Hawks won their semifinal against visiting Midlothian in a commanding fashion 6-0 at Hanover Friday night. Dinwiddie likewise won its semifinal, but – because of weather-related delays – the two teams decided against holding a conference final over the weekend as the regional playoff began Monday (after this edi-

tion went to press). The Hawks get the top seed because they have a higher power rating than the Generals. The Hawks jumped on Midlothian early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Trojans seemed deflated after Hanover picked up two more runs in the fourth inning. Three Hanover pitchers – Antonio Balducci, Jack Dragum and Camden Grimes combined for a no-hitter, with Balducci picking up the win. Hanover head coach Charlie Dragum wasn’t worried about the lack of a conference trophy. “It’s not a big deal. We’re the No. 1 seed, so we’ll be hosting and Dinwiddie will be traveling,” he said. “We’d like to have the trophy, but hopefully we

They scored just 18 seconds after, as senior Caroline Wilkes found the back of the net. And the goals kept coming. Midlothian took its first lead less than three minutes after that timeout and never looked back, going on to defeat Hanover 18-9. “I just had to get my girls pulled back in and get them pointed in the right direction, and then things turned from there,” said Reagan. It was the Trojans’ third consecutive conference title in its third straight conference final against Hanover. Hanover coach Taylor Woolard said her team came off the bus ready, before it jumped out to its early 5-2 lead. “Winning the draws was huge,” she said. “We won control, and we moved down the field and we saw the goal.” But after that pivotal timeout, Midlothian (11-3) held Hanover (8-8) scoreless for the rest of the first half. Natalie Webster had four of her game-high six goals in the first half, all after that important timeout. She also had an assist.

In the 65th minute, a corner kick produced two close chances for the Indians, but they were unable to convert. Similar chances in the 73rd and 74th minutes also put a lot of pressure on the Hanover defense, but the Hawks rose to the occasion and kept the shutout alive. Hanover clinched a Region
