ECHANICSVILLE – Oscar Watson and Robby Dodd would have been proud. Watson and his beloved Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department started the Hanover Tomato Festival in 1978. Dodd of Dodd’s Acres Farm has supplied the famous Hanover Tomatoes for the event since the beginning. Both are now deceased but the tradition continues and even expanded this year with more Friday evening events, including the Papa John’s Pizza Run. Food vendors were available too. Saturday kicked off with the Hanover Concert Band performing from 9 to 10 a.m. on a stage provided by the E.J. Wade Foundation. The late Henri Moore Jr., who served as assistant fire chief for Hanover FireEMS, was honored with the festival being dedicated to him for his service to the county. County commonwealth’s attorney reviews laws that took effect July 1 stitutional, amendments were enacted to Virginia’s D.U.I. laws that took effect on March 16, 2017. There is no longer a criminal penalty for refusal of a blood test. However, one may consent to the test or the officer may secure a search warrant to obtain a blood sample. The breath test is legally permissible as it is a search incident to the arrest and criminal prosecution is permissible for refusal to submit to a breath test. The refusal may be used as evidence in the D.U.I. trial. A second offense of refusal of a breath test is reclassified to a Class I misdemeanor from a Class II. This increases the financial penalty and doubles the possible jail sentence. The loss of license for refusal of a blood or breath test, second offense in 10 years, remains at 3 years. Presumptive levels of intoxication will apply to blood obtained by a search warrant. Search warrant applications for blood test are to be given priority by magistrates. All of the amendments to driving under the influence statutes will now be conformed with sections dealing with juvenile DUI, commercial driver DUI and boating DUI. The business records hearsay exemption has been expanded to criminal cases. This change permits business records to be introduced by written certification as opposed to live testimony. Government records may now be authenticated by digital signature. Hunting licenses may now be carried by electronic or computerized means. A state junior bear hunting license was created for those under 16 years of age. A sling bow can be used to hunt deer and small game when the hunter is licensed to hunt with bow and arrow. Hunters may wear blaze pink instead of previously required blaze orange. An individual who agreed to a first offender disposition on a domestic violence charge may no longer appeal a conviction resulting from violating the terms of first offender agreement. A defendant has 14 days to withdraw from his initial plea. Protection for health care providers against assault and battery was expanded to include personnel of any clinic or facility rendering emergency care.
Persons with violent felony convictions are not eligible for first offender domestic violence disposition without the approval of the prosecutor. Retained lawyers in criminal felony cases may withdraw within 10 days after charges are certified from the district court. Written notice must be provided to the client, the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Circuit Court. The court or the clerk is required to issue a transportation order for a defendant to be brought to court from a correctional facility upon request of the Commonwealth’s Attorney or counsel for the defendant. Testimony in a preliminary hearing or sentencing hearing by an analyst for results in a certificate of analysis may be conducted via two-way video. The requirement that a building be “public” has been removed for purposes of charging maliciously activating a fire alarm. Sub-contractors are permitted to work without a license if the job is valued at less than $2,500 and does not require a specialized license. It is a Class I misdemeanor (up to $2,500 fine and/or up to 12 months in jail) to use an electronic device to trespass on property to peep or spy into a dwelling or occupied building. This prohibits the use of a drone to perform what one cannot do in person. It is permissible to use electric personnel delivery devices (robots) on sidewalks, shared-use paths and crosswalks unless prohibited by the locality. Virginia is the first state to pass such a law. The fine for a second or subsequent farm use vehicle violation is now $250. Previously, it was up to $250 regardless of the number of previous violations. Drivers are now required to move a vehicle to the side after a breakdown/ accident/emergency that did not result in an injury and driver is capable to do so. Failure to drive on the right side or observe traffic lanes will result in a set fine of $100.00. Purpose is to address “left-lane bandits” who drive too slowly in the left hand lane. see LAWS, pg. 21

(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Hanover County Commonwealth’s Attorney R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III. “My thanks again for the privilege of serving as Hanover’s Commonwealth’s Attorney,” Chalkley said.) As always, on July 1, 2017, new legislation took effect in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The following article is a summary of new legislation that I believe is of interest to the citizens of Hanover County. Not every piece of new legislation is addressed and those laws noted are only summarized. Please contact the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office should there be any questions. A law enforcement officer or animal control officer may now determine if a dog is dangerous. The owner now has 30 days time to secure CHALKLEY the dangerous dog registration certificate and comply with other provisions. When a defendant owes restitution to a victim of a criminal offense, money collected from the defendant will be applied to restitution first, then to fines and costs. To assist in combating the opioid problem, the Department of Health is permitted to distribute naloxone to drug treatment providers after training has been received. A pharmacist may dispense naloxone to one who has a standing order although there is no patient-specific prescription. A prescriber registered with Prescription monitoring Program (PMP) must check PMP prior to issuing an opioid prescription that will last more than 7 days (was 14). Opioid prescriptions must be submitted electronically. No longer is the driver’s license suspension mandatory for one convicted of 1st offense possession of marijuana unless the possessor was driving. In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Burchfield v. North Dakota, wherein criminal penalties for a refusal of a blood test were found uncon-

Time and again, we learn it is a small world By Melody Kinser Managing Editor One of the greatest rewards of writing is being recognized for your work. Last Thursday, a very kind gentleman called in to compliment the column I had written about my father. He said he and his wife had moved from Florida to be close to family in Mechanicsville. He said he enjoys reading The Mechanicsville Local and keeping up with what’s going on in and around the community. Then he started talking about their ages. He said he was 87 and his wife was 83. In the background, a voice was quite pointed in saying, “82.” I told him my mother would be celebrating her 87th in November. He then proceeded to tell me he was from Bluefield, Virginia, and his wife was from
Crumpler, West Virginia. Although he detected a certain accent in my speech, he didn’t know I was a native of the Mountain State. Small world #1 — I told him I lived and worked in Bluefield, West Virginia, for seven years. Crumpler is located in McDowell County where an uncle worked for U.S. Steel. Small world #2 — I had stories to share about McDowell, which, like my home county, has suffered greatly with the demise of the coal industry. (People there are still waiting on those promised jobs.) While I had heard of Crumpler, I had never been there. I also never visited Caretta or Coalwood, where NASA engineer Homer Hickam (“The Rocket Boys”) was raised. The gentleman chuckled now and again at my accent (I keep thinking it will fade — even just
a little — after 12 years in the commonwealth). He wants me to meet his wife, expecting we have stories to share. I got the impression he also wants to hear the similarities in accents. It was a gracious and most pleasant conversation and he and his wife are exactly the type of people we want to welcome to our little piece of the world.
They did it again! Once again, all those involved with the Hanover Tomato Festival exceeded all expectations with their preparations and success in organizing another memorable event. It’s a yearround process and one which takes an incredible amount of planning. Thank you! We are looking forward to No. 40.
The Fourth of July reminds us of the ties that bind By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist There’s no shortage of news that consistently reminds us of what divides us as a nation, and it often seems like we are a country that has huddled in to two distinctive schools of thought. I’m not sure whether it’s a case of clashing philosophies, the advent
of media that often over probes and magnifies the differences or the ad nauseam amount of coverage it all receives. I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s all part of an ebb and flow that exemplifies the freedoms we enjoy in our democracy. The arguments are not new, and the opposing views have traditionally been viewed as a sign of strength, an affirmation of a system

Recent events appear to have widened a gap that always existed, and some say the current environment revealed a wound that has festered for years. Does all of the political discourse equate to a nation who has lost its collective respect for those who don’t
agree? Of course not. The history of our country offers assurance that partisans have always passionately defended or promoted their given cause or belief. After having just celebrated the Fourth of July, crowds of Americans gathered around the nation to celebrate the birth of a nation. They sat see FOURTH, pg. 8

Countering letter about Democrats Thomas Williams, in his June 8 response to Toni Radler’s May 17 letter, demonstrates his clear understanding of the “Tell a lie often enough and some fools will believe it” principle. “How about Mrs. Clinton giving the Russians 20% of our uranium production?” he asks. In fact, then-Secretary of State Clinton didn’t give the Russians or anyone else any uranium at all. To be sure, the Secretary was a member of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. when the CFIUS approved the purchase by Rosatom, a Russian firm, of a controlling stake in a Canadian uranium mining company that operated in the US. But Clinton was only one of nine Committee members, and had no power to approve or veto the deal on her own. Further, no uranium actually left the US because neither Uranium One nor Rosatom had an export license. So claiming that Secretary Clinton gave the Russians “20% or our uranium production” is not true. What about “... Obama telling the Russian ambassador that he could do more for them after the election?” During a 2012 event with Dmitri Medvedev, then President of Russia, Obama told him that after the election he would have more flexibility to resolve issues related to missile defense because he would be in a better position politically as a lame duck President. But he did not tell him that he could “do more for them after the election.” Saying so is, also, not true. Finally, and most egregiously, Mr. Williams falsely accuses Ms. Radler of claiming in her letter that the Russians put President Trump in office, or that she would “have us believe” that Russian President Vladimir Putin or see LETTERS, pg. 6

Russian agents were at the polling place to tell him “how to vote.” Ms. Radler accused Trump of firing FBI Director Jim Comey in order to “sidetrack the investigation into Michael Flynn and others with unseemly ties to Russia and Vladimir Putin.” She did not make any claims of any kind about Russian influence on the election, much less that the “Russians [put] President Trump in office.” Saying she

Secretary Clinton lost to Donald Trump for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that we still choose a President using an outdated Electoral College designed to protect slavery in the original Southern States (slaves couldn’t vote, but they counted as 3/5 of a person for allocating Electoral College votes). Russian meddling arguably cost her the election, but Toni Radler did not make this claim in her letter, and Mr. Williams should not say she did. In any event, Republicans
have lied about the Clintons for more than 30 years, and Mr. Williams simply repeats some of the right wing’s antiClinton greatest hit falsehoods in his letter. “Tell a lie often enough and some fools will believe it” indeed. In any event, Mr. Williams’ letter is a great example of how conservatives spend a lot of energy challenging the honesty of Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party — but they have to lie to make their case. As we sat on lawns and enjoyed the splendor of a warm summer night and a sky filled with fireworks, it was easy to see that we are not a nation
divided, but a nation diverse and accepting. While our political discussions may become heated, the ties that bind us are much deeper than a partisan desire. While we are Italians, Catholics, African American, Asian, LGBT and everything else we are Americans first and foremost. We traverse our daily lives
I served on the Facilities Work Group for Hanover County Public Schools in 2014. The purpose of our group was to evaluate existing facilities and plan for future population growth. The fly in the buttermilk was the large number of developments that had been approved but not built. A request to David Maloney, director of the Hanover County
Planning Department, produced some surprising results. There are enough approved developments already in place to achieve the 1% growth rate for the next three years. There is an eight-year inventory of recorded lots and zoned approved lots just waiting for the developer to complete the necessary paper work. We are all aware that growth has overwhelmed the ability of existing infrastructure to handle the traffic, let alone everything else. We all know that the
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) cannot keep up with road work. We all know who is going to get the bill for road work. It would seem that the county would see that an eight-year inventory is more than enough to maintain a 1% growth rate. They choose to ignore these facts. It is time to put the on the brakes and give infrastructure a chance to catch up. Larnie Allgood Mechanicsville
enjoying interactions and relationships with fellow citizens who may or may not agree with our political views. Soldiers defend our nation daily with no regard to the political or social views of the brave colleague who sits beside him or her on the front line. Yes, it’s the ties that bind that we celebrated on the Fourth of July, not the petty
political differences that make us different. We celebrated as Americans, grateful residents of a nation that allows the freedoms that shape more than just our political affiliations. The unity is affirmed each and every time a flag passes, or a fallen soldier is remembered. It’s displayed in that lump in your throat or chill in your spine that accompa-
nies the playing of the national anthem. More importantly, it’s exhibited in the fairness, charity and respect we display daily for fellow citizens who might not agree with our personal or political views as we live in a nation that accepts diversity, but strives for unity. A divided nation? Not even close.

reaching out to those in need. He stayed in close touch with people that were sick, grieving, or experiencing difficult times, reaching out with daily phone calls, cards and regular visits. Many times it was simply a call to say, “How are you doing today?” His demeanor was that of a true “Christian Southern gentleman” with a sincere desire to make everyone feel special. Ben looked forward to the day when Christ would call him to his Heavenly home and reunite him with his sweet Mabel. As his health declined in recent years, his famous words were, “Everything is going to be all right.” God bless his caregivers who have loved him and gone beyond their duty to help him in his home. LCDR DARL JEWELL SR. LCDR Darl W. Jewell Sr. (USN, Retired), took his last flight on June 13, 2017, for a festive reunion with his soul mate and wife of 59 years, Patricia (“Pat”). He was one month shy of his 90th birthday. Known by all as “Ace” since he was a child, he left behind many who loved JEWELL and admired him, including his sons, Darl (“Deuce”) Jr. and his wife, Dianne, William (“Trey”) and his wife, Annette, Michael (CAPT, USN, Retired) and his wife, Carole; grandchildren, Anna, Travis and Carrie; his sister, Jean; beloved nephew-like-brother, Ken (“Spiz”) Kennedy; brother-in-law and fellow naval aviator, Joseph (“Joe”) Strabala, Esquire; a gaggle of boisterous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families; and dear friends, Joyce Broad, Beverly and Betty Miller and Jean Brehmer. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Rosa Lee (Jenkins) Jewell; his brothers, Boyd, Randolph (“Randy”), William (“Punk”) and Kenneth; and his sisters, Mattie, Bette and Shirley. Ace was a 1945 graduate of Fort Hill High School (Cumberland, Maryland),
where he quarterbacked the football team, delivered strikes from the pitcher’s mound, and served as class president. He enlisted in the Navy toward the end of World War II, qualifying as an aviation machinist mate 1st class with service as a rear seat gunner in the SB2C Helldiver (U.S.S. Essex). After the war, he attended Potomac State College for two years followed by aviation cadet training at Pensacola, Florida. He was commissioned Ensign with Wings of Gold in 1950 and ordered to fighter squadron VF-113 (U.S.S. Philippine Sea) with whom he flew two combat tours during the Korean War. Following Korea, he was a proud member of squadrons VF-54 (USS Kearsarge), VA-54 (USS Bonhomme Richard), VA-56 (USS Midway), VF-124 (NAS Moffett Field, California), VF111 (USS Midway, Vietnam war deployment), VA-127 (NAS Lemoore, California), and VRF-31 (NAS Norfolk). He also served as flight deck officer on the USS Ranger. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander after 23 years of active service flying fast and waving them aboard those “rolling postage stamps in the ocean.” He was decorated with a Distinguished Flying Cross earned during a raid in North Korea in 1952. Ace remained active in retirement, serving as chairman of the Bedford County Air Industrial Park (Bedford, Pennsylvania) and overseeing construction of a new regional airport. Golf was the outlet for his athletic talents. He was happiest, however, sharing his life with his darling Pat, puttering around in the garden, browsing through neighborhood yard sales, entertaining friends and attending the occasional squadron reunion. They met when they were both young Navy officers, he an ensign and she a lieutenant junior grade. Though she had to resign her commission when they married, she always out-
ranked him, but he knew he was his best with her by his side. They were inseparable until Pat left us unexpectedly in 2010. Ace never met a stranger, drawing everyone in with his tall tales, bawdy jokes and skill mixing stiff drinks! Stories of mischief, mayhem and practical jokes, with he and Pat taking the lead, were legendary. This force of nature ultimately was slowed down by arthritis, emphysema and heart failure. He found allies in Dr. Hillary Hawkins (Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers), Dr. Johnny Wong (Pulmonary Associates of Richmond) and Dr. Dean Caven (Virginia Cardiovascular Specialists), each of whom managed to pull him back from the brink on multiple occasions. His innate resilience, fueled by a deeply rooted stubborn streak, helped him overcome his frailties longer than anyone expected. Thanks are extended to the staff at Covenant Woods continuing care retirement community in Mechanicsville for their devotion to him, whether he was laughing or growling! We will celebrate his life later this summer. Those wishing to remember Ace are encouraged to make donations to charities supporting military service members and their families.

Second rail hearing, altered photo top council talks By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The proposed high-speed rail that would roll through the Town of Ashland continues to dominate meetings of Ashland Town Council. During the July 5 regular session, held a day later than usual due to the Fourth of July holiday, Mayor James Foley talked about the second public hearing of the Department of Rail and Public Transportation. He also addressed a Richmond TimesDispatch photograph that had been altered and posted to social media. Opponents appeared at
a meeting of the Virginians for High Speed Rail (VHSR) VHSR is a not-for-profit organization that strives to educate and advocate for a reliable rail service that is both fast and frequent, in hopes of connecting the commonwealth of Virginia to the entire East Coast. “Some Ashland citizens attended [the meeting] with their ‘No Third Rail’ signs – we are not opposed to VHSR, we support VHSR, but we were making sure that the threat to our town is known and visible,” Foley said. Two Ashland residents who were holding the signs at the meeting were verbally confronted by another woman who was supporting
VHSR. She was described as being annoyed that they brought signs opposing the construction of a third set of railroad tracks through Ashland, referring to one of the options that is currently being proposed as an alternative for the DC2RVA high-speed rail project. Supporters of the high-speed rail carried their own signs at the meeting, and Foley explained how “there was some great coverage where our citizens were holding up signs and it was PhotoShopped out, to show [them holding the supporters’] signs and posted on sites. We had a lot of media coverage on that – thank you to the media for that.” The tampered photo, originally taken by R-
TD photographer Jim Mahoney, was uploaded to VHSR’s Facebook page. During the Town Manager’s Report, Joshua Farrar, who also attended the VHSR meeting – went deeper into the high-speed rail conversation. He outlined the summary of the meeting and what the town is currently hopeful for as leaders and residents prepare for the next meeting this month. The third meeting will be held July 28. The remaining sessions are scheduled for Aug. 28 and Sept. 25. The public hearings are designed to focus on see RAIL, pg. 22
Fourth means patriotism and parade By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local
A
SHLAND — Proudly showing their national red, white and blue spirits on the Fourth of July, Ashlanders gathered to celebrate Independence Day in the historic train town. Residents and those who came to the town to join in the festivities lined the railroad tracks in the Center of the Universe to watch the annual old-fashioned Fourth of July event, and to take part in the patriotic activities taking place before the parade and the reception afterwards. “We had a great turnout, I would say we probably had more people than we normally have. The last time that we had a crowd that big was two years ago when there was zero humidity,” said Sarah Holloway, executive director of the Hanover Arts and Activities Center (HAAC). The parade stepped off

spectators standing along the tracks and underneath tents or sitting on blankets and lawn chairs applauded the marchers. As the parade lined up at 10:15 a.m., the majority of
the crowd hung around the front section of the Arts and Activities Center. HAAC, a non-profit organization, sponsored the family-oriented event. To help kick off their
patriotic celebrations, the Center had many activities to entertain parade-goers. The property was filled with food, music and old-fashioned lawn games. There was a van selling ice
cream and Boy Scouts had a tent where they offered snow cones and other snacks. Ashland Boy Scout Troop 793 recently moved its meetsee FOURTH, pg. 18
Hanover school board needs accountability In Hanover County, decisions on hiring school administrators and employees, and hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars, are routinely based on political connections. It’s damaging our school system and its reputation. Our school board members should be elected by the people, not appointed as political favors by board of supervisor members. Having an elected school board — accountable to the citizens that fund the enormous amount of money they appropriate — would go a long way in preventing the type of cronyism and self-dealing that is becoming more common in recent Hanover County Public Schools administrations. I hear people ask, “Why change to elected members if we have a good school system?” I believe this question is asked of those who had children in Hanover schools in the distant past. Many of us that currently have children in HCPS — especially those that attended HCPS as students — see problems. According to HCPS’ own budget, student enrollment is already dropping in our schools, while Chesterfield and Henrico schools are projecting student growth. New families are finding those counties’ schools preferable to Hanover schools. And we all know unhappy teachers in Hanover are fleeing to surrounding school systems in greater numbers. Public officials who are appointed only have to do what’s best for one person — the person that appoints them. If the school board as an
Taking issue with engineers of 360 changes I really hope I never meet the moron(s) that designed the complete Charlie-Foxtrot that is the new Bell Creek Road/ U.S.360 intersection. I won’t be held responsible for my actions if I do. Admittedly, the original intersection had some problems, but by far the biggest wasn’t in the intersection itself, it was thoughtless, selfish drivers — people getting into the outside (far left) left turn lane on the north side of Bell Creek, and then when the light changed, racing the inside left turn lane traffic or trying to merge through that traffic to reach the on-ramp for northbound Interstate 295. Some minor changes to the original intersection, along with proper signage and an adequate enforcement effort to back up that signage, would have corrected those problems, for far less money, time and frustration. Instead, the new design has
isolated several businesses — I know that IHOP has had to lay off staff due to the significant drop in business and I wouldn’t be surprised if they close, along with the Shell station and the cluster of businesses in front of WalMart — and created a nightmare of traffic confusion and a huge potential for wrecks at the new intersection. Meanwhile, other needed fixes have been postponed or skipped for lack of funds, or just being unaware of the need. The intersection at Cold Harbor and Catlin is in desperate need of a stoplight, as are some others in the area, but instead we get this Bell Creek fiasco. It’s ridiculous. Steve Sneed Mechanicsville

watching the non-motorized parade to puckering up for watermelon seed-spitting or participating in an apple pie contest and a patriotic pet contest, the scene was allAmerican. The Hanover Concert Band performed a patriotic concert and sing-a-long on the lawn of HAAC. Different creative units have always been a part of the parade, but there was never a full marching band. “We’ve always had requests for a marching band, but it’s always been impossible to
get the high school marching bands to participate because their band leaders have such a short vacation time,” Holloway said. However, this year, the nonprofit group, with much help from Ashland resident and Randolph-Macon College biology professor Jim Foster and Felix Stevens, the finance director for the Town of Ashland, created a Facebook page that succeeded in enrolling volunteers that made up the parade’s first community marching band. The community band,
which was notably christened “Cacophony of The Universe (COTU) Marching Band, performed for the crowds after holding only one rehearsal the night before the event took place. If this doesn’t concern you, how about the insulting of the Gold Star family whose son was killed in Iraq saving his squad’s lives? If this doesn’t concern you, how about the mocking of the physically-handicapped reporter (like a fifth-grader in elementary school would before being spanked for it)? If this doesn’t concern you, how about the (bragging about) “private-parts grabbing” or “having sex with her even though she was married” or the fun made of (a Fox News anchor’s) menstruation cycle? If this doesn’t concern you, how about the reality show type wrestling with a photoshopped CNN reporter (which clearly incites violence). If this doesn’t concern you, how about the “usage of public office for private gain” Trump

Sooner or a later, if you keep on defending a criminal and if you keep spewing hate at a female candidate or a black president, I’m wondering about your integrity and patriotism. I also wonder how it is that folks like you still overlook (and even continue to defend) all the vile, vulgar, childish behavior like that of Trump. You also need to take out a dictionary and look up the word “vicious” because you certainly do not have a grasp of vocabulary skills. Trump did say he “loves the uneducated.” Race hate groups in this country have exploded in numbers ... with Trump’s blessings. This is most likely of no concern to you. Further, if you want to talk about “do-nothing Congress members” I’d look past Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and look towards the “little dormant Dave Brat.” Here’s a little history for you: Who said, “In this hour I would ask of the Lord God only this: that He would give His blessing to our work, and that He may ever give us the courage to do the right. I am convinced that men who are
created by God should live in accordance with the will of the Almighty. No man can fashion world history unless upon his purpose and his powers there rests the blessings of this Providence.” Yes, this sounds like one you would adore and it may sound like an ideal leader ... but that speech was given in 1937 by the Chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler. Look it up! You’d better stop your hate and read Mathew 7:21-23 for your own good. I was going to let this latest hate-spew pass but it shall continue to be my duty to call out neo-Pharisees who misuse the “red-font” words of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because when you cite Him as you do in one breath then spew further hate in the next you are committing three abhorrent behaviors: 1. Usurping the Word of God as to love thy neighbor. 2. Destroying any Christiancurious person’s potential walk with Christ. 3. Using God for your own vile purpose. Some use God for money; some for power and some (maybe that dude in your mirror) for hate spreading You’d better think but I know you will not and I see your hate runs in the family as well! Holloway said the parade is organized volunteers. “The head of our committee is Paige Christy, [who] has been doing this Fourth of July in Ashland for many years, and we absolutely appreciate everything she does because she works very hard on this parade.” Christy, who serves as

considering new alternatives to the two original options that the Town of Ashland and Hanover County were dealt: the western bypass or through Ashland. The proposal to design the route of the high-speed railroad through Ashland is highly opposed by the town and its citizens as it would be an additional third set of tracks placed on top of an already developed train town designed for two sets of tracks. While the western bypass option is more favorable to Ashland as a town, they still wouldn’t be far away from its placement. In fact, they’d be seeing its effects only about a three-minute drive up West Patrick Henry Road (U.S. 54), or even a short drive westward on Ashcake Road as it begins to transition into Ashland Road, where the farmers, rural residents, and those living in the outskirt suburbs of the Ashland
zip code would feel it most. “The focus of this meeting was going through the alternatives at a – I would say — very high level in saying why many of the alternatives were dismissed, as we went through some significant discussions of the eastern bypass options, limited digression of western bypass options and discussed a little about the options through town,” said Farrar. He added, “… and a number of county representatives, as well as the town supported DRPT in reviewing, in further detail, some of the options that they had dismissed — in particular, some of the eastern bypass options because they went through WashingtonLacey Park.” The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) is the state department that proposed the DC2RVA project and its underlying route alternatives for Ashland and Hanover. “At the time of the meeting, the county expressed interest in reviewing these options if that
was the sole purpose [for why] they were dismissed – to allow these options to go through the screening process so we could evaluate them further without that limitation,” he said. The town manager said there had been a lot of talk of wetlands and about cultural resources at the meetings. “I think we have a better idea of the process of which they went through while screening, but maybe not as many details as we’d like to see.” Responding to Farrar’s remarks, Foley said that “most people walked away from that meeting pretty frustrated and not happy, but it was a learning experience of how they came to those poor decisions.” In explaining his reasoning for declaring their decisions as poor ones, he stuck to the same message that Ashland has been going with from the get-go, in which putting a third rail through the Center of the Universe isn’t logical. “Deciding not to pursue some of the eastern options is just not understandable to me and to

think that they could fit a third set of tracks through Ashland – I will never understand how they ever even came to that possibility,” the mayor said. Wrapping up the discussion, Farrar said it is the town’s hope that they will come back with some additional analysis at the next meeting. “We’re hoping to see some of that further analysis of the other options that were presented as well.” In other news, three new appointments were announced after council, in a closed session, discussed considerations and interviewed prospective candidate(s) for the appointment to the Ashland Parks and Recreation Committee and the Town Planning Commission. Council members then went into a public work session in which they interviewed Patricia Temple for a seat on the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA). She is a board-member on the BZA, but her term expired last month. She was unanimously reappointed to retain her seat and serve another term. Other action items pertaining to the town’s Boards and Committees included Lou Ann Jewell’s reappointment on the Planning Commission, and Vice Mayor James Murray’s motion to nominate Judith McKinney to the Parks and Recreation Committee. Jewell is the chairperson of the Commission, and McKinney was nominated to fulfill Monica Klisz’ unexpired term on the committee, which will end in December of this year. Town Attorney Andrea Erard motioned to the town council for the official appointment of Scott Rowe to the Ashland Planning Commission; as it was technically unofficial until the recent formal resignation of former Commissioner Felix Stevens, who decided to vacate his seat on the commission after being hired as the town’s finance director.

certificates and checks to the winners: Sammy Parker (first place, prize of $100); Sydney Dudas (second place, prize of $75); and Ragan Michalski (third place, prize of $50). The contest, which ran from January to February, was open to all fifth grade students in Hanover County in public and private schools and interested homeschooled students. Advertised in the local newspapers and through the Pamunkey Regional libraries, the students were asked to sub-
mit an essay based on the 4Way Test. A committee of club members read and evaluated the 23 entries. Mona Guilford, the classroom teacher of these students, explained how the essay provided an opportunity to learn about the proper way to write one. She also said that the prizes awarded are added incentive for the students to do their best. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements from Rotary is the 4-Way Test. From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned

He came up with a simple 24-word code of ethics for employees to follow in their business and professional lives. It became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers in his company. The survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy. Atlee Little League claims District 5 title By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor HENRICO – Two Atlee pitchers, Anthony Gabello and Cole Elrod, combined for a no-hitter to lead their team to a 4-0 victory over Tuckahoe American and a Virginia Little League District 5 Majors championship at Tuckahoe Little League Friday night. Atlee, which earned a bye in the tournament’s first round, defeated Tuckahoe American in the winners’ bracket semifinal on July 3. The team advances to the Virginia Little League championship tournament, which begins on July 20 at Fuller Heights Park in Triangle. Gabello dominated Tuckahoe batters. He struck out 15 of the 17 batters he faced before reaching his pitch-count limit and yielding the mound to Elrod with one out in the sixth inning. His only baserunner came on a walk to his opposing pitcher, Tuckahoe’s Colin Estrada, in the first inning. Elrod struck out the final two batters to complete the nohitter. Atlee head coach Jamie Sanford praised his starter. “Anthony, he’s a great pitcher. I rely on him a lot,” Sanford said. “I usually don’t start him, but in a big game like this you want to go with your big guns. I knew he could do it and get us to the end of the game.”

Atlee Little League’s Hayden Rollison slides safely home in the fifth inning of Atlee’s 4-0 win over Tuckahoe American at Tuckahoe Little League Friday. With the win Atlee claimed the Virginia Little League District 5 Majors tournament championship.
Atlee got a lot of help from the bottom of its batting order, with the diminutive Jack Bowles, batting in the eighth position, going 3-for-3 with a double a run scored and a RBI, and Connor Custalow, in the nine spot, going 1-for-2. Sanford praised Bowles.

“Jack’s a little, unique kid,” Sanford said. “You look at him when he comes to the plate and you think to yourself, ‘This kid’s little, he’s not going to do much.’ “But I tell you what, he’s a battler. All day long he will fight and claw you, tooth and nail.
When it came to making subs, I was, like, ‘I can’t sub for him.’ He is just on and on. I think he batted 1,000 for this tournament, which is just incredible.” Custalow was also hot throughout the tournament, batting .900, Sanford said. A number of other local

Post 137 gets past Post 175 for second time By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – For most of the 2017 American Legion season, Mechanicsville Post 175 has found a way to beat its District 11 opponents. Except for one team. For the second time this season, Mechanicsville went up against South Richmond Post 137 in a game Sunday at LeeDavis High School. For the second time, this season Post 175 came up short, falling 5-4 after rallying from a four-run deficit. The loss means that, if the two teams finish the regular season this week tied at the top of the District 11 standings, Post 137 (10-2) will get the top seed in the district tournament which begins Saturday. The loss was extra disappointing for Post 175 (9-2). It trailed 5-3 when it had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. It could manage only one more run. “We were right there again,” said Mechanicsville manager Brandon Powers. “We lost some opportunities. We had opportunities early on.

“That last inning hurts. We were sitting pretty. We were right there. … That’s a tough game to lose.” The game began as a pitchers’ duel. Post 137 starter Grant Squyars yielded just three hits, two walks and one run before having to leave in the seventh inning as he reached his maximum pitch count. He struck out eight Post 175 batters. Mechanicsville pitcher Matthew Holler likewise got off to a good start, giving up six hits, two walks and two runs while striking out seven South Richmond players. As his pitch count got high in the seventh inning, he yielded the mound to Carson Box, who gave up three hits, three walks and three runs. “We had the one bad inning and we weren’t able to come back from that,” Powers said. GRAL teams fine-tune as season wanes appearance at Burkwood. Atlee bested Old Church 974.5-704.5, while Burkwood dominated Twin Hickory 1939.5-1010.5. But the emphasis in both cases was on improving individual performance, not so much on team points. “We’ve got quite a few new, young kids, which is awesome,” said Old Church head coach Courtney Hurtubise. “And they’re improving, so that’s always fun. That’s the goal.”
Atlee head coach Thomas Curley said his team is strongest at the middle school level, but he is seeing a lot of improvement in his 8-and-unders. “Our 13-14s are probably, I would say, the strongest age group we have and they’re probably the strongest 13-14 age group in all of GRAL. I think I’ve got, maybe, 13 kids making Champs in that division,” Curley said. “We just had our first 8-and-under make

They’re starting to swim faster.” That trend is apparent at Burkwood as well. “We’ve been real excited this year. The kids are continuously dropping times through the season,” said Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber. “So we’re looking really good for Champs.”

The term “barbecue” comes from the Spanish “barbacoa,” a wooden structure used by the Arawak people of South America to roast meat. These Native Americans ate a diet of fish and wild game, including snakes, rodents, bats, worms and birds. These days, however, barbecue usually just refers to pork – the meat of a pig.
