ECHANICVILLE — Camp Unplugged, a program of Tad’s Kids, a Richmond based nonprofit, will run its second year of Camp Unplugged Friday through Sunday, Aug. 18-20, at Camp Hanover in Mechanicsville. Camp Unplugged is a meaningful and fun outdoor experience that allows kids to get back to being kids in an “unplugged” environment while providing tools for selfesteem, stress, resiliency and social media “smarts”. All kids are “at-risk” of bullying, safety issues and even addiction that the new world of social media brings. The camp will be held for kids who attended middle school this past year. Future camps are planned for high school kids. There is no cost to attend. Testimonials from camper parents include: “I wish that this was available to my older

RICHMOND — Certified farmers can now use a modified Virginia Grown logo to promote their farm products as both locally grown and produced by U.S. military veterans. For more than 15 years, the Virginia Grown label has helped promote locally-grown produce and farm products. Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the new joint logo on Wednesday, July 26, as part of his administration’s efforts to support military veterans

and Virginia agriculture. The Virginia Grown symbol has been added to the Homegrown by Heroes logo, which is the official farmer veteran brand image developed in 2013 by the national Farmer Veteran Coalition. A sample image is available at vdacs.virginia.gov/vagrown/ homegrownbyheroes.shtml. “There is a groundswell of support for veterans, and there is a dire need for new farmers,” said John Fant, chairman of the newly formed Virginia chapter of the FVC. “We worked with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer

Services to develop this logo to demonstrate that a product is grown by veterans here in Virginia.” Fant, who also is a cattleman and retired U.S. Army colonel, said the joint logo is just one effort to support current veteran farmers and encourage more military veterans to begin farming. “From a food security perspective, the average age of a Virginia farmer is 58½ years. So as current farmers transition into retirement, we need to replace them,” he said. “We think many veterans have the see VETERANS, pg. 4

A good education is the only path

97th District race attracts citizen request for debate

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor I was flabbergasted by a recent comment criticizing an advanced education. How can anyone be too educated? To practically crucify someone for being highly educated is enviable but not an issue to vilify. My sister achieved a Ph.D. in chemistry, while I, on the other hand, did not take advantage of the opportunities our parents afforded us in terms of higher education. With a high school diploma in college preparatory studies, the obvious move was to apply to Marshall University. I was accepted. There was a time when you had to be accepted; there were no guarantees that, because you

wanted to attend that university or college, you would be welcomed as a student. While I don’t have any regrets due to the career I “fell into,” I chose to stay in my hometown and attend the local community college. Yes, there was a young man involved — but that’s not a story worth repeating. I studied general courses my first year and then turned my academic attention to secretarial science. I had excelled at typing, so I took an advanced course and even learned shorthand. As a matter of fact, I can still use shorthand. I think it’s gone by the wayside like cursive writing. I graduated in the top 10% of my high school class, which, since I didn’t really apply myself to studying, made me wonder about the other 90%.

I was so proud of my sister’s accomplishments. She went back-to-back with her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and pursued her Ph.D. while employed by Philip Morris. I watched her accept that pinnacle in academia at the University of Delaware less than a year after our father had passed away. The bottom line is I praise and respect those who continue their educations and attain whatever level they choose. Hanover County Public Schools is an excellent start for any student to continue the path to success. Our school system continues to attract residents because of the education offered. Dream the dream and pursue it. As for me, this career has been most fulfilling.

Watch what you say because it is true that words can hurt By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s a universal irritant — those pesky phrases that are so overused that the mere sound of them makes us cringe. They happen in almost every avenue in life, whether it’s in the normal dialect of the office or repeated in almost every newscast known to man. Lately, I’ve heard the term “get out over my skis” dozens of times when

a person being interviewed doesn’t want to go far with an answer. It’s a phrase that took the news industry by storm, and I’ve heard every variation of the phrase. “I don’t want to out in front of my skis,” one commentator recently said as he attempted to reach a conclusion on a set of facts. Wow, that’s a variation of the metaphor that draws some pretty frightening images, and I suppose if one

is in front of one’s skis, he’s probably seconds away from being run over. I recently read an article about banned or should be banned phrases in the office. They included too often heard fragments like “go big or go home” or “circle back”. In addition, single words like synergy and ping also were frequent winners in the contest of most obnoxious office phrases.

Terms like “peel back the layers of the onion” are no longer viewed as clever metaphors to motivate, but annoying attempts at cuteness that fall short of the mark. Daniel Bukszpan of CNBC compiled the list and suggested some of the terms like “think outside of the box” have outlived their usefulness and I tend to agree. Now, I’m no expert on office lingo, see WORDS, pg. 8

The Mechanicsville Local is to be commended for printing contributed reports from both candidates for the 97th District seat at the Virginia House of Delegates months before Election Day. This is the first time in 10 years that the Democrats have nominated a candidate in a district that traditionally votes Republican. Based on voting history, our respected incumbent, Del. Chris Peace, should be strongly favored to win. The Democratic candidate, Cori Johnson, is making a courageous move to take on this campaign. Del. Peace and Ms. Johnson are likely to share many similar values, but are equally likely to have differing views on the issues affecting the 97th District. The 97th District, consisting of King William County, New Kent County, and the eastern half of Hanover County, is rich in history and American tradition. The American tradition is this situation would be to have a public debate on pertinent issues chosen by the candidates, so that the citizens of our district can make a fully informed choice at the polls. Del. Peace is well-known for his newspaper submissions to the Richmond Times Dispatch, printed side-by-side with those written by Democrat Jennifer McClellan, so this should be familiar ground for him, and candidate Johnson has publicly expressed her request for a debate. Council approves relocation permit for business By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Two action items and one public hearing were the focus of the Aug. 1 Ashland Town Council meeting. The action items included the approval of a conditional use permit (CUP) that was issued to a business, Select Recovery Agents, for relocation. In addition, Councilman Steve Trivett was elected vice mayor. He replaces James Murray, who resigned to attend law school.

She recently was appointed to the Ashland Main Street Association’s (AMSA) board, taking over a position that is responsible for handling promotions, including the association’s newsletter “Get Centered.” The promotions chair requires someone who is website savvy and a strategic communicator who can handle

their social media efforts, as well as producing and sending out the Get Centered newsletter. “They thought I’d be a good fit for that,” Foley said. Business Parks Association,” she said, referring to another condition that was added in addition with the planning commission’s earlier request. The vote passed 3-2, Councilwoman Kathy Abbott and Councilman John Hodges held the votes in opposition. Hodges was sworn in by Hanover County Circuit Court Clerk Frank Hargrove Jr. at the beginning of the night, marking his first meeting with a seat on council. Abbot expressed concerns with the designation of the business type not matching up with the intention of the zoning classification, as well as a fact that Police Chief Doug Goodman mentioned at the meeting, in which there is a high number of police presence at that company due to the nature of the business. Goodman explained how sometimes vehicles will be dropped off there that have contraband in them, so the owners must report that to the police, mentioning that they were nonemergency response calls. Ficarra met or spoke to representatives who attended a previous public hearing and is working on providing them with information to address the concerns they raised. Some of the concerns were that it was supposed to be a business park under the technology zoning recommendation and that his company didn’t fit the description. Although he said he felt skeptical when first introduced with the application, Foley said that the result of the conditions, proffers and buffers making most of the site not visible to the eye is what lead to his decision to feel OK with moving forward. Sidewalk Projects (Fiscal Year 2018) Town engineer Ingrid Stembjorn, focusing on the list of many projects on the sidewalk plan for Ashland,

property of the town. The discharge from the pipes on sidewalks creates unsafe conditions. Ashland previously requested for the pipes to be removed, but staff noted that the town ordinance gave them no authority to order the discharge pipe’s removal. Collaborating with Andrea Erard, the town attorney, staff drafted a new ordinance. It requires that property owners must apply for a permit if they are planning to install a drainage pipe which discharges onto town-owned property. With the passing of the ordinance last week, town staff will be able to review, comment on and give the final go-ahead for any such project in order to assure a safe environment that contributes to the Center of The Universe’s well-being. On a couple of recent occasions, there have been property owners who have installed sump pump pipes that dis-

proposed to council that the construction of some new sidewalks next on the list begin taking place. The locations being proposed for construction on the sidewalk plan include Caroline Street from Calhoun Street to Better Med Urgent Care on North Washington Highway (U.S. 1); and on Route 1 between the entrances of the current Martin’s Food Market shopping center. Town staff recommended the proposal for beginning the construction of these sidewalks based on previous discussions with the council, and requests from citizens and RandolphMacon College (R-MC), as well as the simplicity of the project. A petition was sent to the town from adjacent property owners to the site in discussion, and requested the sidewalk on Caroline Street along their road frontage. R-MC also agreed to construct sidewalk that the public can access on Caroline Street to the west of Calhoun Street. Goodman offered his input on the proposal, saying that he hears “a lot of those folks from those residential areas that have inquired with me that we need to lower the speed limit, because they have difficulty getting out of the subdivision [due to] the speed.” He also noted the safety concern that comes with not having sidewalks. “I fully support what Ingrid has proposed here tonight, and that we could move forward with exactly how we did on the western side of town on Thompson Street,” Goodman said. Drainage on Public Property (Ordinance 201708) During the public hearing, Stembjorn presented a proposal for an ordinance dealing with the discharge of sump pumps installed by property owners that have pipes which lead to sidewalks, which is the

DISMISSES Continued from pg. 1

Shumadine had no official comment for the press, but did provide background on how the judge ruled. He described the motion to strike and not allow the case to proceed to a jury as normal procedure. In a defamation case with a public official, the burden of proof is higher than normal requiring clear and convincing evidence. Also, the plaintiff has to prove malice on the part of Galuszka, meaning he knew the story was untrue when he wrote it. Judge Levy ruled that some of the statements contained in the story were not defamatory, some did not refer to Davis and others were opinion, and there was no actual malice on the part of the reporter. Reached by phone after the decision, Davis was brief, but expressed no regrets regarding his right to defend his reputation against what he consid-

ered false allegations expressed in the story. “I am extremely grateful for the many witnesses who, while under oath, testified that the information contained in the article wasn’t true,” Davis said. Davis also expressed concern regarding the abrupt outcome of the trial. “I do feel the jury should have been able to render a verdict — let the people decide,” he said. “Holding the media accountable is tough. For those who think the system was short-circuited, I say ‘Don’t be discouraged’.”

Day 3 Style reporter stands by story, sources Former Style Weekly reporter Peter Galuszka took the stand in a civil defamation trial that pits the Richmond magazinze and Galuszka against Hanover County

supervisor Sean Davis. In his complaint, Davis claimed a Dec. 8, 2014, article and two subsequent stories penned by Galuszka accused the second term supervisor of abuse of power and public malfeasance. In earlier testimony, Davis’ attorney, Steven Biss, called facts alleged in the story “patently false.” Called by Biss as an adverse witness, Galuszka testified that he utilized eight sources for the story and believed the story he produced was well sourced and accurate. Biss asked Galuszka why his comments accused Davis of abuse of power and malfeasance. “So, Sean was the target (of the article)?” Biss said. “I wouldn’t refer to him as a target . . . I didn’t accuse Sean Davis of anything,” Galuszka answered. Galuszka admitted first being contacted by Catherine Lee, the mother of two graduated Hanover students,

Subsequently, Cathy Easter shared a letter written by her to Attorney General Mark Herring outlining what she considered Davis’ efforts to use his position as a supervisor to influence decisions regarding Hanover County Public Schools teachers. In the letter, Easter requested a Virginia State Police investigation of Davis for his interference in Hanover County School Board matters. Biss contended that Lee had no personal “first-hand” knowledge of any of the accusations, and Galuszka admitted some of his sources “had strong opinions” regarding Davis, but defended his choice to pursue the story. He described the letter to the Attorney General as “coherent and detailed. It was my responsibility as a journalist to look into it.” But Biss said some of Galuszka’s main sources for the story, including Lee, Easter, Ragan Phillips and Phyllis Thoreaux were biased and had

no first-hand knowledge of the allegations cited. Asked about his reliance on sources that had not seen the acts they alleged, Galuszka said he “saw nothing wrong with that.” And Biss said the sources were not properly vetted or verified, but Galuszka said he displayed due diligence in the story’s preparation. “I confirmed they were all involved with the school system. Nothing in my research made me doubt them,” Galuszka testified. The veteran reporter told jurors the story “would have been better” with Davis’ comments and said he attempted to obtain answers from Davis. Galuszka testified he attempted to call Davis the Friday before publication to get “his side of the story.” When those attempts were unsuccessful, he sent an email the next day that included 12 questions for Davis to answer. “I gave him ample opportunity to respond,” Galuszka said. Davis did not address the specific questions in the email and responded with a short response. Biss introduced emails from Style Weekly publisher Lori Waran and editor Jason

Roop that indicated some concerns with the story before it was published. “Peter seems all over the place on this one,” Waran said in the email. Asked why he connected Davis to the complaints he was hearing from parents and students, Galuszka said the facts he gathered were consistent. “All of my sources kept referring to Mr. Davis,” Galuszka said. Style Weekly attorney Conrad Shumadine questioned his client in regard to the accuracy of his sourcing for the story. “Did you believe your sources?” Shumadine asked. “Yes,” Galuszka replied. Earlier in the session, Biss called several school board members who testified they were unaware of any interference by Davis in teacher discipline cases or other school matters. Bob Hundley, Marla Coleman and Norman Sulser testified that Davis had not contacted any of them; and they were not pressured by the Henry District supervisor regarding school-related personnel or discipline issues. Biss completed the plaintiff ’s case by calling several see DISMISSES, pg. 23

character witnesses, including Sheriff David Hines and Hanover NAACP vice chair Robert Barnett. His final witness was Lisa Davis, wife of the plaintiff, who testified the article had caused stress and anxiety for her husband. “He chokes up when he talks about the article, she said. “He takes his reputation very seriously.

Day 2 Davis takes stand, denies intervening in school issues Sean Davis, a member of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, spent three hours on the witness stand as the second day of a weeklong trial began earlier today at the courthouse. Davis is the plaintiff in a defamation suit filed against

Style Weekly and reporter Peter Galaszka. Plaintiff ’s attorney Steven Biss began his case in earnest by questioning Davis regarding his role in disciplining teachers, banning movies, or other school-related issues. Davis said he often receives comments from constituents regarding incidents at Hanover County Public Schools, but described his role as more of a facilitator by directing the complaints or comments to those best equipped to handle them, namely school administration of the Hanover County School Board. “If it’s important to a citizen, then it’s important to me, Davis said in response to his attorney’s inquiries. He denied ever taking any action to ban movies or have teachers disciplined, suspended, or removed. He also said he did not attempt to ban or discipline a teacher for showing the film “Roots of 9-11 as part of a 9-

11 lesson plan that also included footage of the attack and President George Bush’s speech at the site. “Many of my constituents were upset about it, Davis said. “The film indicated it was something America did that caused 9-11 ... and the film was trying to justify those actions. Biss also asked Davis about a letter he sent to county attorney Sterling Rives that outlined allegations against another teacher in 2012. The Henry District supervisor said, again, he was reflecting the concerns of his constituents. “Yes, I wanted the allegations investigated, Davis said. “I didn’t want the complaints to fall on deaf ears. In reference to a story by Galaszka published on Dec. 7, 2015, in Style Weekly that alleged Davis’ involvement in several censorship type issues, the father of three said the damage to his reputation was

Davis said he was called a “book burner” and once the story was published it became increasingly difficult to unring the bell. “It doesn’t stop,” he said. He contended that many people did not like the fact that a supervisor was “accusing a teacher of teaching trash to their students.” Davis defended his position on the film and said he corresponded with constituents who felt like school officials were not addressing some of their concerns. “Some felt their voice was not being sufficiently heard,” Davis said. Supervisor Canova Peterson testified that he also was concerned with the content of the “Roots” film, but, after further investiga-

tion, learned the teacher had included other material in the presentation to better balance the subject matter. “I still think it was a lousy film but I didn’t find any fault with the teacher.” Biss also called a list of school employees in an attempt to bolster his claim that Davis did not intervene in school matters, including superintendent Michael Gill, former school board member Hank Lowry, former Hanover High School principal Dana Gresham, former Del. John Cox and former superintendent Jamelle Wilson. The plaintiff ’s case is expected to conclude tomorrow with defense witnesses scheduled to begin testimony on Wednesday. Two women and seven men are impaneled to decide the case, but only seven will deliberate once testimony and closing statements are completed.

Basic is better for students’ dress code Enough is enough . . . get your heads out of the clouds. Let’s band together as one stepup and make Hanover County Public Schools lead the way and prove that what you wear or don’t wear does not make the person. It’s the equal and honest education each and every student should receive. “Basic is better” instead of this so-called dress code, which is such a disappointment that this solution was the

best solution that the Hanover County School Board could come up with; make us think another looks needs to be taken at them? What needs and should happen across the country — and I know it will be a hardship for some — is a uniform style dress attire, something that should have already been in place. To ease into that, start with high schools — simple transition for all boys (young men) and girls (young women) standard hemline for all no shorter than two (2) inches above the knee; a basic shirt (golfer shirt) or plain t-shirt style with school colors (optional). If you choose to adopt what we called Dress Down day, most choose Friday and

special holidays. “Yes” leggings with a shirt at the hip line. Sorry, no yoga pants or tank tops. Keep those for the fitness centers. This one’s for the girls. For boys who choose to show their underwear, there is a great accessory to help called “suspenders,” a pair of bands passed over the shoulders to hold up trousers. In doing this, it will empower students to concentrate on what’s important: their education. In the long run, it will cut down on some bullying and shaming. This does not pick up the genders Boys v. Girls. We need all students to be the best they can be. Starting with the high school also will help our young

men and women be better prepared for the workforce. In the long term, this will be more cost-effective. Reach out to local businesses that can help in the transformation . . . a “no-brainer.” Health factor: Allowing clothing finger-tip length that should be outlawed. That was truly dumb. The average person with that length standing but in a sitting position that length will rise at least another three (3) inches, leaving more exposed skin cells, bacteria and germs to generate. Germs, as a rule, remain on most surfaces for at least 24 hours. I’ve seen boys so many times with a runny nose or sweat tend to use their unwashed

hands to wipe across their nose, then wipe whatever on the backside of their leg. Yes, there are doctors who might say that’s not a health risk (time to get a new doctor), so why are so many of our children getting ill? That’s why we need more scientists in the field not depending on people from other parts of the world to solve what we can do here wth simple steps. Getting back to basics. In today’s market just learn new shopping techniques. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy slacks than shorts. Wear the slacks during the winter; in the spring cut them to the required length and hem them. Reserve that fabric if you want.

As the child grows, you can add inches back at a later time or donate it to a group that could refurbish those pieces into quilts for our homeless. We need more young men and women to step it up but we need to give a better set of tools. Clothes do not make the person, but a closed mind gets them nowhere. So, to the school board members who made the dress code, be brave enough to introduce the mandated code “Basic is better.” It’s simple and no reason why it cannot be fully implemented by the fall and then carried into middle school by the new year. Sheriff: National Night Out in county a success HANOVER – Last week’s National Night Out observance was declared a success by Col. David R. Hines, sheriff of Hanover County. He said over 60 communities took part “as we shared in great food, fun and fellowship” on Tuesday, Aug. 1. “National Night Out is an official night where law enforcement agencies celebrate partnerships within the community. Fortunately for the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, this is something we celebrate daily,” Hines said. “Partnering together and developing a shared vision of community has always been the key to a successful law enforcement agency. We are blessed to have such great community partners in Hanover

County,” he added. The sheriff also extended his thanks to all the participating communities “for the hospitality shown throughout the evening.” The event kicked off at 10 a.m. at the Target in Mechanicsville. Throughout the day, Hanover deputies and first responders visited Neighborhood, Business and Worship Watch communities. Hines said, “Partnerships were strengthened, and the outpouring of support reflected the great relationships we share with our community.” National Night Out in Hanover County is organized by the Sheriff ’s Office, and, Hines continued, “signifies our

unified stand against crime. It is formalized through our SHIELD program in partnership with our community watch programs: Business Watch, Neighborhood Watch, and Worship Watch.” Those programs connect the Sheriff ’s Office with the county’s neighborhoods, businesses and faith communities through continual communication, education, and working together. In these programs, citizens are afforded an opportunity to learn more about their Sheriff ’s Office, partner together and become better aware of events in their community. To learn more about the Hanover Sheriff ’s Office watch programs, contact Deputy Jim McLaughlin at 804-365-6110

es, cultural and community attractions, pedestrian-friendly streets and attractive public squares.” From updating AMSA’s website to keeping the community updated on Ashland events and news, Foley’s position focuses on promoting the “Center of the Universe.” “Part of my job is reaching out to the community, looking

for ways to spotlight businesses and individuals like artists and writing them up in the newsletter – basically [what I’ll] be doing is promoting Ashland,” she said. Part of that is to inform Ashland residents of what’s going on in the town, like events and other current news stories that are taking place, including the DC2RVA highspeed rail proposal to construct a third set of railroad tracks through Ashland. “I’ll be updating the weekend events every week on Tuesday, and keeping the Facebook page updated.” She’ll also be promoting the

town’s nonprofit organizations.

AMSA’s newsletter “sends out at the beginning of each month and includes a calendar, business and artist spotlights, and upcoming meetings and events,” Foley said. Examples of upcoming “meetings” featured in the newsletter include the ongoing sessions between Ashland government leaders and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) regarding the third rail, or other meetings such as two recent public input ses-

sions that took place between Ashlanders and town staff to brainstorm on the new Ashland Town Hall study. The third rail, which Foley described as the town and organization being “knee-deep in,” is one topic she said they certainly are trying to keep folks updated. “It’s a big thing for everybody – it’s like taking over Ashland right now – it’s the most important thing going on.” Get Centered reported in its “DC2RVA Update” that the last Town of Ashland/ Hanover County area community advisory committee

meeting regarding the future of the DRPT’s high-speed rail proposal was on Wednesday, July 26. The newsletter is delivered to its subscribers through an email marketing software called “Mail Chimp,” which is popularly used to send out newsletters to a mass audience. “We have a really large subscription database, so a lot of people get the Get Centered newsletter,” Foley said. Those who are interested in being kept up-to-date on Ashland events and news can subscribe to the newsletter on AMSA’s website.

Heartbreak in Kirkland: Atlee team DQ’d Snapchat post gets team ousted before World Series title game

Opinion: League has a failure to communicate By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

By Dave Lawrence Mechanicsville Local Michael Phillips and Paul Woody Richmond Times Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee Little League’s dream run through the Junior Softball World Series ended in nightmare Saturday morning just hours before they were to take the field in the World Series championship game in Kirkland, Washington. Little League officials disqualified the team from the championship game because of an inappropriate social media post. Atlee, which had been undefeated all week in the tournament in Kirkland, prevailed 1-0 on Friday in a feisty semifinal game against the host team from Kirkland. The event is for the best 12-to 15-year-old girls teams in the world. The Atlee girls, who went to bed Friday night expecting to

Robert Zullo/Times-Dispatch

Atlee Little League found a host of supporters awaiting their return from the Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington, on Sunday, August 6, 2017. Atlee manager Scott Currie said that seeing the support was “very, very good for the kids.”

play in the championship, woke up to find out they had been disqualified and that Kirkland would play in the championship in their place. Atlee manager Scott Currie disagreed with the decision to disqualify his team. “It’s a travesty for these girls,” he said Saturday afternoon. “Yes, they screwed up, but I don’t think the punishment fit the crime.” Before Friday’s game, a member of the Atlee team posted a photo on Snapchat show-

ing six members of the team extending their middle fingers. The caption made it clear the gesture was intended for the Kirkland team. Atlee coach Chris Mardigian said the post was a challenge to some members of the host team who had treated the Atlee girls with less-than-ideal hospitality – primarily taunting, which, like the photo itself, also is not in keeping with Little League’s pronouncements regarding good sportsmanship. Friday’s game ended in a

double play shortly after a baserunner from the Kirkland team was ejected for stealing signals from the Atlee team while on second base and relaying them to the batter. Stealing signals is against Little League rules. A Kirkland coach was ejected as well. Currie and his coaches learned of the post from tournament staff after the semifinal against Kirkland. They took action right away. see HEARTBREAK, pg. 33

The only undefeated team in the Little League Junior Softball World Series came home without a championship. Some members of Atlee Little League made a tragic decision to make an inappropriate social media post. The post was used by Little League officials to disqualify the girls from participating in the Junior Softball World Series championship game Saturday. Here was Little League’s statement regarding the decision: “After discovering a recent inappropriate social media post involving members of Atlee Little League’s Junior League Softball tournament team, the Little League® International Tournament Committee has removed the Southeast Region from the 2017 Junior League Softball

World Series for violation of Little League’s policies regarding unsportsmanlike conduct, inappropriate use of social media, and the high standard that Little League International holds for all its participants. The Tournament Committee will advance the Host Region from Kirkland American/National Little League to participate in the championship game, scheduled for Saturday, August 5 at 3 p.m. eastern time in Kirkland, Wash.” The photo in question involved some extended middle fingers. The post was directed toward the host team from Kirkland, Washington. Some of the Kirkland players had not been as hospitable as a host should, so there were some negative feelings. I get that. I have no doubt that the post violated some Little League policies. But what, see FAILURE, pg. 33

HEARTBREAK Continued from pg. 32

“When we saw the picture, we gathered all the girls immediately in one room, asked them about it and told them that anyone who had anything referencing it or posting it to remove it immediately,” Currie said. “Of course, by then it was too late.” Currie then arranged for the team to deliver an apology in person that night to the Kirkland players. “We wanted to do it faceto-face,” he said. “One of their coaches had a very gracious speech about how this is what the Little League is about, learning life’s lessons.” Kirkland manager Mikal Norman confirmed to the team’s hometown newspaper, the Kirkland Reporter, that they had accepted the apology. Not everyone happy At least one on the Kirkland side, however, seemed to have lingering issues with the incident. Sometime overnight Friday, Curt Towey sent the following email – which contained an attachment featuring the photo in question – to, among others, Junior Softball World Series tournament director John Chadwick. “Found this on the internet after today’s game,” Towey wrote. “What do you plan on

FAILURE Continued from pg. 32

specifically, are those policies? I have thrice asked Little League spokesman Kevin Fountain what they are: twice by email, once by phone. I have yet to get a response. I have (thrice again) asked the Little League spokesman what the stated penalties are for such infractions. Any proper policy, rule or regulation speci-

for youths feeling more than enough pain as it was. “The bad thing about the whole thing is just the ignorance that people on social media are spewing against 12- to 14-yearold girls,” Batten said. “Many people are just lynching these girls. I’m trying to refrain as much as possible from putting myself in the middle of it. … It just fuels the fire for people that have nothing better in their lives to do.”

Aftermath (so far) While Kirkland was falling to a team from Poland, Ohio, in the championship game Saturday afternoon in a 7-1 loss, the Atlee girls were dealing with the realization that they had disappointed their supporters. Batten released a statement late Saturday night about the softball team’s disqualification due to an inappropriate Snapchat post. “We are very sorry for the social media post resulting in the disqualification of our softball team contending for the 2017 world championship,” he wrote. “We are deeply disappointed this social media post did not reflect the core values of Little League International or Atlee Little League. We expect Little League International will take the time to fully investi-

gate the matter, and we will comply with this investigation by providing all information about unpleasant interactions including the social media post and the time leading up to that event – not all of which were on the part of those on the Atlee softball team. We desire to protect all youth who are recipients of inappropriate behavior both on and off the field, as we take very seriously our charge to impart the value of good sportsmanship.” Batten continued the statement with a plea for understanding. “It is important to remember the young women athletes involved in this unfortunate event are minors who are part of the fabric of this community that supported them and which they were honored to represent,” he wrote. “Those involved feel very deeply this lapse in judgment, and wish your consideration for their privacy at this time. These young athletes are part of Atlee Little League. As all young athletes are trained to do, they will brush themselves off after a loss, and try again – after having learned a most valuable lesson.” Despite Batten’s plea for understanding, internet savants were eager to lambaste the kids on various social media platforms and in the comment sections of news sites around the country that picked the story up. It proved painful reading

And whether Atlee was given a chance to file said appeal? Again, three more – oh, two questions, so six more – nonanswers from Little League officials. Keep in mind that Atlee’s infraction was not the sort that affects a game’s outcome, like the presence of an ineligible or juiced player. Certainly not like the infraction that got a Kirkland baserunner and the team’s manager tossed in the seventh inning of

their World Series semifinal against Atlee: They were stealing and transmitting Atlee signals – another no-no among Little League’s policies and procedures (at least I think they must be, but given the league’s lack of response to my other questions, I can’t be sure). I am appalled by Little League’s lack of transparency in this matter. In any event, a game was held, and the Central Region champion – from Poland, Ohio

– defeated Kirkland 7-1. The Poland kids earned their spot in the championship game, and I’m happy for them that they are the ones who won. As for next year, Little League needs to review how it handles such matters and clearly spell out what can and cannot be done – and spell out what the penalties will be for those who violate the rules. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Kirkland team did not respond to requests for comment. The Mechanicsville Local reached out to Little League officials to request an explanation of the range of penalties for infractions like Atlee’s, of the policies for handling such infractions, of why Little League International headquarters got involved so quickly, and whether Atlee had any avenue for appeal. Fountain, the Little League spokesman, referred back to the league’s statement. No more information has been forthcoming.

Communication breakdown Both Currie and Atlee Little League President Jamie Batten said that Little League officials in Williamsport did not contact any Atlee Little League official – either in Kirkland or in

Mechanicsville – prior to handing down the decision to disqualify the team. Atlee officials were not allowed to contact Little League itself until after they were told the team was disqualified. “I have not heard one word – not at the district level, state level or Little League International,” Batten said. Currie said he wasn’t sure what rule Little League officials invoked to justify the disqualification. Codes of conduct used by some Little League organizations recommend that discipline for unsportsmanlike offenses be handled first by a team’s coaching staff. Repeat offenses are generally handled at successively higher levels. There was no repeat offense in Atlee’s case. In addition, the tournament information packet for participants includes a statement of social media policy, but does not specify how violations are to be handled, or what the range of penalties is for infractions. Junior Softball World Series Tournament Director John Chadwick, when reached by cellphone, said his organization will not be commenting on the decision. Chadwick is based out of Kirkland. (Currie made it clear that Chadwick and his tournament staff were very supportive throughout the week, including after the disqualification.) Coaching staff on the

fies the relevant penalty for a misdeed. (I’ve been to one court or another enough times in my life to know that.) Even in sports, we specify the rules – and, more important, the penalties for breaking them. In football, unsportsmanlike conduct is worth 15 yards. In ice hockey, a foul deed is worth two, maybe five minutes in a penalty box – maybe less if the other team scores a goal while your penalty-killing unit is on ice. So, again, where does it say

that what the Atlee kids involved did merits a disqualification? I did note that some Little League codes of conduct specify that unsportsmanlike behavior should initially be handled by the coach. Repeat offenses are handled by folks higher up the Little League food chain. I pointed that out to the Little League spokesman. Again, no answer so far. Likewise, I asked (thrice yet again), what are the provisions for appeal of such a penalty?

doing about it? This is very disturbing and cannot and should not be simply swept under the carpet. It’s out there and everybody has seen it. A simple ‘We’re Sorry’ ....because we got caught......doesn’t cut it.” The message was passed on to Little League International headquarters in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Saturday morning, Chadwick informed the Atlee team that it would not be participating in the championship game. In response to a request from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Little League spokesman Kevin Fountain issued the following statement: “After discovering a recent inappropriate social media post involving members of Atlee Little League’s Junior League Softball tournament team, the Little League® International Tournament Committee has removed the Southeast Region from the 2017 Junior League Softball World Series for violation of Little League’s policies regarding unsportsmanlike conduct, inappropriate use of social media, and the high standard that Little League International holds for all its participants.”

Homecoming The team returned to Richmond International Airport Sunday afternoon – to a sizeable crowd of supporters. Currie, his coaches and players were grateful. “I think it was a huge, huge help for all the community that was there at the airport to meet us,” Currie said. “I think the girls really, really, really appreciated that. I know I did. I know the other coaches did. It was awesome to see that support out there. “After sitting up all night and all day reading all the stuff on the internet, all the posts, all the negativity behind it, to see these people at home that know these girls and know that they’re not bad girls … for them to come out and support us was very rewarding – very, very good for the kids.” Dave Lawrence, can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
