Panel seeks answers on rail options By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Those attending last week’s fourth meeting of a Community Advisory Committee (CAC) hoping for some definitive answers left less than satisfied as they exited the Blackwell Auditorium at RandolphMacon College. The committee is tasked with identifying alternative options for a proposed high speed rail project from Richmond to Washington, D.C. The Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) is holding the meetings to gather public input and come up with recommendations to the Commonwealth Transportation Board. That state agency will make final recommendations to the Federal Railway Administration (FRA) in December regarding the controversial project. On Monday, Aug. 28, DRPT director Jennifer

CSX representative Randy Marcus said that option would not work for anticipated freight traffic and would cause substantial delays. “Our team has taken time to go back and look at the modeling and it shows significant freight delays in places like Newport News, Petersburg and Emporia,” he said. “The two track option is not one we could support.” DRPT staff introduced an additional option in the underground category, a trench through downtown Ashland (three tracks) with a partial covering that would allow pedestrian access to the downtown area. That option would also eliminate the crossing at U.S. 54. Foley said he would take that idea to his council and constituents in an upcoming meeting, but said the new plan

does have some merit. It also has some drawbacks. The construction time on the project would take about two years, an extended period of time for downtown businesses and residents to be inconvenienced or affected negatively. The latest option seemed viable to some members, but most said more information is needed and public input gauged. Marcus said CSX is involved in the construction of a similar partially covered

project on Virginia Avenue in Washington, D.C., and offered to share that information with interested parties. The group did make limited progress in eliminating some options on the table, including eastern bypass alternatives that included utilizing the Buckingham Branch Railroad and a third rail above ground through the town. Those BBRR options were eliminated due to speed restraints on the BBRR and substantial impact contained in those plans to Interstate 95. All of the eastern alternatives were “screened out” early in the process by DPRT staff, but reinserted when some residents requested that those options be considered. Mitchell asked the panel regarding the least desirable options in each group, includ-
ing eastern bypass options, western bypass alternatives and through town choices. Hanover county administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. asked if all the options were on the table. “Is there anything on this list that is not viable?” Mitchell said the CTB would consider cost, community impact and other factors, but she noted that any plan that disrupted traffic on I-95 presents approval challenges. “It would be a big hurdle for the CTB,” she said. Carrie Carlisle, another Hanover County representative, said she could not in good conscience prioritize western bypass alternatives since one of the plans would seize her property. Stanley said he would prefer more time before eliminat-

Welcome back! Gill maintains continued focus
(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Dr. Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools. The 2017-2018 term started Tuesday, Sept. 5.) Greetings, The beginning of the school year is always filled with excitement, and we are eager to welcome our students. Whether it is a senior anticipating his final year, a kindergartner arriving for the first time, or a student learning how to use a locker in middle school, our goal is to provide all students with the support they need in order to be successful and achieve their highest potential in a safe and healthy learning environment. Our division-wide focus this year and for many years to come will be to provide our students with the most relevant, equitable, and innovative education possible. We will provide relevance by seeking to engage every learner authentically with lessons that have a direct application for success in life. From an equity standpoint, we recognize that each student is unique, and our approach to education cannot be “one size fits all. Rather, we will seek to challenge every student in order to provide the most rigorous educational opportunities appropriate to their needs and abilities. Finally, we will empower our students and staff alike to dream, create, and thrive in an environment that inspires innovative thinking — a spirit that has defined our country since its inception. Hanover County Public Schools continues to enjoy a deep-rooted tradition of excellence, and we remain a leader in education. In addition to our dedicated staff and students, community partnerships have proven vital to upholding our strong tradition. Parents, civic organizations, businesses, county leaders, the faith community, and more continue to be key ingredients to our success. As a result, I invite you to partner with us, whether by volunteering in a classroom, serving on an advisory council, becoming a business partner, or simply attending one of the hundreds of events held at our schools throughout the year. Together, we will help prepare the next generation of leaders in our community. In education,

OPINION | The Local Views From the managing editor
Every little bit helps — give what you can By Melody Kinser Managing Editor A profound sadness fell over me last Tuesday when I submitted a donation to the American Red Cross. The images of what we had been seeing for days taking place in Houston resurfaced in my mind and brought a chill. This disaster hit close to home for the Richmond Suburban News family. Laura McFarland, news editor for Powhatan Today and Cumberland Today, is a native of Houston and most of her family resides there. She is a woman of faith and has a strong resolve, but being that far away from family at a time like that was nerve-wracking. She shared details of what was taking place on her newspapers’ social media sites. Laura offered up a personal perspective as to the emotions
being experienced and the prayers requested. She amazes me often, but she has the support of her RSN family and the readers of the communities she serves. As the managing editor of RSN, I am so very proud of the relationships this staff has formed, making us familiar faces and trusted journalists. It has filled my heart to read the posts of support and encouragement Laura has received. She is an integral part of our group and we continued to monitor the situation and her status throughout the devastation. Just hours before I stopped working to submit an online donation to the Red Cross, I checked in on Laura. Her family was fine; only one sibling had any water even nearby. She also was receiving emotional support from a group
of people on social media with ties to Houston. Their stories have probably been similar, but they are blessed to have one another. Back to donating. The Red Cross and The Salvation Army always answer the call during an emergency and Harvey has continued with that commitment. As I fight back tears with thoughts of the people in Texas and Louisiana, I urge you to please donate. The Red Cross will accept a minimum of $10. Hopefully, you can give more. This is the real America. It isn’t about fighting over monuments or possibly shady political deals — it’s about neighbors helping neighbors. We don’t need to make America great again. She already is.
There must be a place where all the lost socks can be found By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When I first moved into my apartment, I would hear water running in the unit above me at regular intervals at odd times of the night. After establishing a friendly relationship with the elderly gentleman who lived in the upper abode, I quizzed him on the late night mystery. He explained that once a week he
washed his socks in the bathtub and it took several runs of water to rinse them. “Why?” I asked. “They always get lost in the washing machine or somewhere in between the hamper and the washer,” he laughed. Now, I’ve learned not to question the wisdom of elderly gentleman, and John was the type of man whose gentle nature commanded an immediate

respect ... and affection. So I didn’t question his sock philosophy. I could, however, commiserate with the former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer turned resident supervisor at the University of Virginia. In his years in Charlottesville, he mentored thousands of students while guiding them through their college careers. He later explained that’s where his sock paranoia began. Each day the laundry room contained dozens of
unclaimed socks, all matchless and seemingly bunched with no consideration for rhyme or reason. I realized that I, too, was the victim of whatever or whoever was responsible for the theft of millions of single socks, making lives miserable for millions who hop around the floor on Monday morning looking for a match. In our house, the hope for a solution provides a sense of eternal hope

and optimism, and we have bags, boxes and suitcases filled with socks that no longer have a companion, or even more frightening have a match located oh so close in one of the competing storing options. All orphans to be sure, but we often talk of our plan to pour all the socks on the floor and match the ones we can and toss the ones we can’t. Problem is we never do it, and I’m beginning to believe that sock sorting prompts procrastination. But what about that bottom drawer that contains dozens of black dress socks, all of them with some unique distinct quality that makes them unfit for a match, at least in that location. Or that group of white ankle socks that all appear similar at first glance but on closer examination have their own distinct brands or markings. Only the luckiest of this unfortunate group will find true happiness with a match, and most will eventually suffer a fate worse than Goodwill. see SOCKS, pg. 8

APD: remember school is in session ASHLAND – With the 2017-2018 school year having started on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Ashland Police Department reminds residents that school buses and children will once again be travelling the town’s streets and sidewalks. Ashland Police officers will be conducting proactive patrols of school zones and bus stops to insure the safety of students and motorists. Motorists should keep these tips from the National Safety Council in mind when approaching school buses and school zones: Virginia law requires traffic in both directions to stop on undivided roadways when students are entering or exiting a school bus. School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing to stop to load or unload children. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign arm signals to motorists that the bus is stopped and children are getting on or

off the bus. The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit. Stop your car far enough from the bus to allow children the necessary space to safely enter and exit the bus. Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks. In a school zone when a warning flasher or flashers are blinking, you must stop to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or at an intersection with no marked crosswalk. Drivers should not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. Do not stop with a portion of your vehicle over the crosswalk. Blocking the crosswalk forces pedestrians to go around your vehicle and puts them in a dangerous situation. Be alert. Children are unpredictable. Children walking to or from their bus are usually very comfortable with their

Children boarding and exiting school buses must be especially careful around the school bus “danger zone,” which is the 10 feet in front, behind, and on each side of the bus. Posted school zone speed limits must be obeyed when signal lights are flashing. There are enhanced fines for speeding in school zones. APD officers will be conducting traffic enforcement the week prior to school to serve as a reminder for drivers to slow down in school zones. So, where do all these socks

‘Music Under the Stars’ attracts large crowd to The Center By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local MONTPELIER — A free summer concert series in Montpelier, once a past favorite of the community, kicked off for the first time in several years on Friday, Aug. 25, at The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education. The Center is located at the corner of Mountain Road (U.S. 33) and Clazemont Road in the tiny rural village of “Montpelier Proper.” About 10 years ago, The Montpelier Center hosted the same free summer concert series, “Music Under the Stars,” on an annual basis due

to its popularity among the community – but was then discontinued. At the Aug. 25 event, there were activities set up for kids, in addition to a frozen yogurt truck and tents selling food; such as hot dogs and hamburgers. Beer and wine sales were made available at 6 p.m., and the music started at 7. East of Afton, a local bluegrass band from Richmond, performed, according to their website, “an energetic mixture of ‘newgrass,’ originals and classics.” “We’re a bluegrass band with a strong respect for the greats while also loosening up

to play something new.” This is in addition to including the
band’s own original works. The recent Montpelier
performance attracted a large turnout, according to Pauline
Sumner, executive director of The Montpelier Center. Sumner is new to The Center, and Montpelier, but was enthusiastic about reviving the Music Under the Stars concert series and her involvement with the nonprofit. She succeeds Theresa Bowen in the position. In the past year, the community showed The Center a strong interest in bringing Music Under the Stars back to Montpelier – and it was back, and larger than ever before. King William superintendent: ‘excited for new year’ By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local KING WILLIAM — As students who attend King William County Public Schools begin to head back for the 2017-2018 academic year, they will be met with some powerful new approaches to their education that the school district has in store for them. King William Public Schools Superintendent David O. White, Ed.D., said he is excited about the upcoming school year. Classes got underway yesterday (Tuesday, Sept. 5). Taking over the superintendent position on May 1, 2016, this will be his second full year in King William County. White formerly held the position of chief secondary officer for Stafford County Public Schools. “I’m really excited for the
school year. One of the things I really like, that I do have the full support of the [King William County] School Board [on] is that they are buying into the vision that we are setting here, which is really to start a whole new way of doing things here in King William,” White said. Last year they started a vision statement throughout the district. “Not a vision statement, but a visioning statement,” he emphasized. He said their visioning statement can be described as a sort of a litmus test for everything they do. Its intended message is that “we take learning personally.” “I want to make sure that the experiences our children have – is that we stood up for them, we gave them a personal education – it’s not about the lecture, and it’s not about the homework necessarily. All of those things are important,
DR. DAVID O. WHITE but it’s about [them having] an experience that they can attest to that was a learning experience.” White said the main vision for the upcoming school year is really about the teachers set-

ting the environment for the students. “Educators have a lot of power to really instill motivation in the students, so that’s what we’re trying to move toward.” He pointed out how teachers are the ones who set the mood in the classroom, and repeated a quote by psychologist Haim Ginott that he read aloud to the teachers at a recent employee gathering. At the end, White said what he would really like to get across is that “Teachers can be a tool of torture, they can be an instrument of inspiration; they can humiliate, humor, hurt, or heal.” He explained how it is his responsibility to decide whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated, and if a child is humanized or de-humanized. White said they want to try to create a continuum
throughout all three levels of public education: elementary school, middle school and high school. As an example, he said a lot of people have different educational experiences throughout their youth, both good and bad, but how the good and the bad are consistent with the particular levels of public education they went through. “We’re trying to create that continuum, and what I like to call ‘banks on a river.’ We have our standards that we will all adhere to, but how [they] navigate your individual strains – you know – we’ll give [them] the latitude to do that, but we have some ranges that we want them to work within,” White said. White also talked about some other updates that are going to be implemented into the district this year. The population of English

are dependent on pollinators like honey bees to fully develop their fruits. Production of other crops such as soybeans, sunflowers and even peanuts receive benefit from pollination by honey bees and other insect pollinators. In fact, pollination by honey bees contributes more than $15 billion to the value of U.S. crop production each year. To acknowledge the work of those harvesting honey and the value of honey to the Commonwealth, Gov. Terence R. McAuliffe has proclaimed September as Virginia Honey
Month. “Honey Month is a time to celebrate the products of the hive such as honey, beeswax and the bees,” said Keith Tignor, State Apiarist at VDACS. “Every Virginian can help honey bee populations by providing flowering plants around their homes and supporting local beekeepers.” Tignor suggests the following actions to help sustain Virginia’s honey bee population: Plant a pollinator garden using a diversity of nectar and pollen sources to help feed bees and other pollinators Become a beekeeper. C-feds open 2017 with win over Godwin By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – One question facing Lee-Davis at the beginning of the season was how well its offense would fare without lynchpin Nathan Edwards, who graduated last year after a successful multidimensional career. The answer came back with an emphatic “Quite well, thank you,” after the Confederates hammered host Mills Godwin 30-0 Thursday night in LeeDavis’ season opener. Lee-Davis quarterback Zach Lass completed 16 of 23 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown and running back Josh Rice had 15 carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Rice, who doubles as a defensive back, also had two interceptions. Rice was modest about his accomplishments. “It was a team effort,” he said. “I couldn’t run without my O-line.” Rice was also helped by his fellow running back, Jamir Johnson. The tandem – both of whom could advance the ball – made it impossible for the Eagles’ offense to focus on just one back. “With Nathan leaving, everyone thought we had no tailbacks coming back,” Rice said. “Everyone thought, like, ‘They’d have to pass the ball.’ … Being able to have two talented

tailbacks is a great advantage.” But if the Confederates would have to pass, they would have plenty of chances. Lass connected with seven different receivers, with the main target being tight end Jalen Hargrove, who had four catches for 72 yards. The Confederate defense did its job – well and often. Mills Godwin showed some offensive sparks in the second quarter, but Rice intercepted a

Sean Bowers pass just before halftime to send Lee-Davis into intermission with a 10-0 advantage. “I just played it in the air,” Rice said. “I knew they were going deep because there was only, like, 30 seconds left, I think. They kept throwing hitches to get first downs and drive down field, but I knew they didn’t have enough time to throw a hitch.” Rice bookended halftime
with his interceptions, with his second pick ending the Eagles’ opening drive of the second half. The Lee-Davis defense got its own score in the fourth quarter when defensive end Ty Mills stripped Bowers of the ball, which bounced toward the Mills Godwin goal line. Linebacker Ned Anthony scooped it up and scampered 38 yards for a touchdown. “I came up, wrapped
[Bowers] around, knocked the ball out with my other hand,” Mills said. “I saw my buddy Ned Anthony take it to the house.” The Confederate defense keep the Mills Godwin offense on its back foot for most of the night. “We emphasize in practice every day hustling to the ball,” Mills said. “We do a pursuit drill. We do drills to run to the ball. When it comes to gametime situations, we’re all at the
ball.” Lee-Davis head coach Ryan Turnage made his share of gutsy, including going for a fourth-down conversion on the Confederates’ first drive of the game – and coverting it. “We liked the looks we were getting,” Turnage said. “We felt like we were going to make a statement right there. … We got it. We made a nice play.” Lee-Davis (1-0) scored on its first drive, driving from its 30yard line before Joseph Hudnall ended the drive with a 22-yard field goal with 5:38 remaining in the first quarter. A few minutes later, Lass and Anthony, who doubled as tight end, combined for the Confederates’ second score, a 21-yard pass with 1:04 left in see C-FEDS, pg. 34
Raiders fall to Deep Run in season opener “We need to get both of them ready as if both of them were starters because our best kids have to play. Tyler not being able to play the whole game, absolutely it hurts for a variety of reasons. … T.C. stepped into both roles and had a really, really good night.” Atlee got two more possessions after its TD, but the Deep Run defense, led by middle linebacker Jacob Hutchinson, who had a couple of sacks, made the plays necessary to claim the victory. Gray said the takeaway for the Raiders was “we have to be really good on defense. I thought defensively we did some good things. We gave up some things we shouldn’t have. I think overall we did some good things offensively. You’ve just got to keep connecting all the pieces. I like this team; the way the guys fight. … There’s a lot of football yet to be played. The character of our football team will be revealed as the season continues.” Arthur Utley can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
By Arthur Utley For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – For the first time in at least eight years, the Atlee Raiders football team is 0-1 after its traditional season opening game against Deep Run. A check of the record book shows Atlee, the home team in Thursday night’s meeting, had won every time since 2010. Deep Run’s ball-control offense; two touchdowns from transfer Dylan Schwarzmann in a 68-second span at the outset of the second half and timely defense in the face of an Atlee rally in the fourth quarter carried the Wildcats to a 13-7 victory. The Raiders are playing a number of sophomores this season, and some of the mistakes Thursday night were “the kinds of things that reveal themselves with a young football team such as ours,” Atlee’s second-year head coach Matt Gray said. “My charge to the guys [at Friday’s practice] was, you can’t play like 10th graders, you’ve got to play like varsity kids. … I told them about being a very aware and a very good situational football team.” Both teams made the playoffs in different regions last year and lost in the first round. This year, both are in Class 5, Region B. Both had returning quarterbacks, and both QBs were injured during the game. Atlee’s Tyler Warren, a sophomore, got shaken up in the first quarter and was held out the remainder of the game as a precaution. Deep Run’s Aiden Wheeler, a junior, went down with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter with the Wildcats leading 13-0. Up to that point he had rushed 18 times for 91 yards and had thrown a 26-yard touchdown

pass to Schwarzmann. That was Deep Run’s only pass completion. Neither team scored in the first half although Deep Run had first-and-goal at the Atlee 4yard line just before the half, but penalties pushed the Wildcats away from the end zone. Deep Run had the ball the last 2:52 of the second quarter. Wheeler returned Atlee’s second-half kickoff 32 yards, and six plays later he connected with Schwarzmann for a touchdown at the 8:10 mark of the quarter.
A personal foul on Atlee on the touchdown and an offside against the Raiders on the ensuing kickoff gave Deep Run field position that led to a successful onside kick. Schwarzmann scored from 8 yards out on the third play after the recovery with 7:02 on the clock. Gray said the series of events that led to Deep Run’s two scores was frustrating. “The third quarter we didn’t get the chance to get the offense out there until after they had scored twice,” he said. “They were able to sustain some
drives.” Atlee’s only possession in the third quarter lasted 2:33. “Our offense is to try to maintain the ball and just run the clock and burn it up. We are going to play teams that are bigger, possibly faster, stronger, all that stuff … that’s what we do; we want to manage the clock,” said Deep Run head coach Chad Hornik. Wheeler’s injury seemed to give the Raiders a spark, and with the help of a personal foul and a pass interference call, Atlee finally got on the board
Warren, to John Johnson with 9:14 left in the game. Brian Marcos booted the extra point. “T.C. is one of our captains and you can see why. He stepped up and led by example. He was very vocal and he played his heart out, and at the end of the day, that’s all you can ask,” Gray said. Warren plays football, basketball and baseball. On the football field, he’s a two-way player as is Nance. Warren also punts.

Cavaliers in learning mode as season starts Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor King William High School’s football team began it season in unfamiliar territory – 0-2 – but head coach Dylan DeHart expects the team to be a contender for a postseason slot as the Cavaliers’ younger players gain much-needed experience. “We’re young. We need to learn to play with some more energy,” said King William head football coach Dylan DeHart. “I think the kids have good, positive attitude. They’ve got good character. They’re just inexperienced on the varsity level. We’ve got a lot of sophomores starting. We’ve just got to get them more experience.” The Cavaliers are not just short in terms of experienced players, but also in terms of coaches, too. “I’m short on coaches,” DeHart said. “I’m actually calling the offense and the defense this year, which is very, very tough.” To add to the Cavaliers’ challengers, they’re missing one significant eligible player who decided to focus on another sport: Ryan Huffman. Huffman decided this summer to focus on basketball, the sport that is more likely to be the one to help carry him through college and beyond. While Huffman made his decision late in the summer, DeHart said he had been expecting it for some time. “He took a lot of hits the past two seasons as starting quarterback,” DeHart said. “We’ve always known baseball was his love and his main focus. … I think he would have liked to have played [football], but he’s focusing on his dream and I can’t blame him for that.” The Cavaliers began the season having to replace more than half their starters on both

Field hockey teams begin season with questions classmen generating highlights for Atlee, too. Sophomore forward Taylor Bates and junior midfielder Sarah Reutti – pushed up to forward to help in Anna’s absence – both have the ability to generate goals.
By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – Hanover county field hockey teams begin their season with a number of questions. Can Patrick Henry repeat if not improve upon its success last year? Can Atlee and Lee-Davis weather early season injury issues? Can Hanover’s experienced quad meet the expectations of a new coach? And, of course, which team will prove itself the master of the county by the time the season ends? Patrick Henry Last year’s Patriots set a high bar for their successors by earning their first win in regional play with a 1-0 defeat of Wakefield in the first round of the Region 5A North tournament. This year, the Patriots play in a new classification – dropping from the Group 5A level last year to Class 4, Region B (along with Hanover) – this year. Given that it lost a handful of seniors, including Aiden Rossman (19 goals, 11 assists), to graduation, the team seems to be poised for another postseason run – albeit in a Virginia High School League landscape that will not have conference/ district tournaments. “We have a large senior class. We have eight seniors, so we have some really great leadership,” said Patrick Henry head coach Abbie Rossman. “They’ve been with me, some of them since eighth grade when I was the JV coach. “I’m very comfortable. They know me well. I know them well. They’re very capable of stepping up into and filling that [leadership] role.” Seniors Molly Enright and Caroline Quigley, who combined for 27 goals last season,
Lee-Davis Injuries and players on family vacations hampered the Confederates’ ability to put together a cohesive team by the time the regular season started last year. The Confederates are struggling for the same reasons this year. The absences leave LeeDavis struggling to find its identity early on. “We usually spend the first month of the season trying to find the optimal place for everybody to play,” said Confederate head coach Merridee Gibson. “That’s been a little bit of a struggle.” One big absence is junior midfielder Casey Carnohan who is recovering from an injury. Dave Lawrence/The Local “She plays right-mid, or Patrick Henry’s Molly Enright (4) maneuvers the ball around the Louisa defense in the Patriots’ 6-0 win on Aug. 22. has played right-mid for us,” Atlee’s key offensive player, strength, though, is in the mid- which is unusual,” Farling said. R-MC has growing pains, but still gets win By Brad Bess Richmond Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – Growing pains are to be expected from a team as young as RandolphMacon’s football team. But in the Yellow Jackets’ season opener, the growing pains appeared few and far between. Three different running backs scored, the defense kept Dickinson out of the end zone, and Randolph-Macon began its Old Dominion Athletic Conferene championship defense with a 41-6 win over the Red Devils on a soggy Day Field on Saturday. “I think that we’re definitely young, but we do have some ability and some guys that can play,” Randolph-Macon coach Pedro Arruza said. “I think we’re going to have to experience some growing pains. Certainly, that wasn’t the best that I’ve ever seen us play. We’ve got a lot of room for improvement, that’s for sure. But I’m excited about the guys we have.” Tre Frederick, the reigning ODAC offensive player of the year, led the Randolph-Macon ground attack with 97 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. His first score from 3 yards out gave the hosts the early 70 lead. His second came from 21 yards out midway through the fourth, putting RandolphMacon ahead 34-6.

Randolph-Macon’s Tre Frederick dives to cap a 4-yard touchdown run in the Yellow Jackets in a 41-6 win over Dickinson Saturday.
J.P. Redmond (Monacan) added 35 yards and a score on six carries. Marcus Bazala (Hanover) rushed for 21 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter that gave the game its final result. The Yellow Jackets had success through the air and on special teams as well. Burke Estes completed 17 of 22 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown to Sean McDonald, who made a
diving catch in the back of the end zone midway through the second quarter. Freshman Chris Vidal made field goals from 24 and 35 yards out. Eric Hoy, the team’s leading receiver with five catches for 69 yards who finished tied with Frederick for a team-high 113 all-purpose yards, said having a plethora of backs will be huge for the Yellow Jackets. “We have a ton of different
backs that we can rotate in, and I think that’s a big benefit,” he said. “It’s phenomenal having them all out there.” Calvin Whitehead, a sophomore safety from Hermitage, led the Yellow Jackets with 12 tackles, including one for a loss. De’Angelo Barr, Bryan Sullivan and Jake Pinkston each recorded 10 tackles. Sullivan and Pinkston each recorded a half sack. Sullivan led the team with 2 1/2 tackles for losses
and forced a fumble, one of six Dickinson cough-ups, five of which were forced and three of which were lost. The Red Devils moved the ball effectively in the middle of the field but were held to a pair of field goals in five trips to the red zone. Whitehead said the camaraderie developed over the summer makes up for the lack of experience. “It starts with the chemis-

two starters lost to graduation. Their defense is loaded with experienced seniors, and firstyear head coach Noelle Najjar Wheaton will rely on them to stop opponents as well as to help their forwards generate offense. Wheaton will rely on junior forward Kora Kane and senior
midfielders Ciarra Ashworth and Lauren Didlake to lead the offense. “They lead our offensive corners,” Wheaton said. “They’re definitely the driving force in our offense.” They should get help from junior forward Brandilyn Williamson and sophomore
forward Allison Moore – a transfer. “She’s pretty amazing to watch,” Wheaton said. “She’s definitely helping lead the offensive team.” The defense will be anchored by junior goalkeeper Avery Ancarrow. “Our defense is strong,”

try,” he said. “We’re always eating, doing everything together. It’s just a big brotherhood, and that helps us out on the field. I had 10 other guys out there, who were working really hard this summer, pushing me to get better. Holding each other accountable. It was just really good, and we worked hard, and that’s the result.” Starting the season out with a win is “awesome,” Hoy said, but the Yellow Jackets aren’t resting after Saturday’s performance. “Great to start off 1-0, having that first step done, (those) first-game nerves (gone), stuff like that. But we need to come out a lot better. A lot of mistakes were made. We definitely need to get better for the next game.” His coach agreed. “We won. That’s a positive,” Arruza said. “But I think we’ve got a long ways to go.” Brad Bess can be reached at bbess@timesdispatch.com. Dickinson R-MC

Wheaton said. “Addison Michael is a senior and Alexis Slicker is a senior. They’ve both been playing five years and they’re kind of our goalie’s backup. They’re really strong getting [the ball] out.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
