MECHANICSVILLE – Jack Frost may have made his way onto the nice list this Christmas since he stayed away on Sunday as the streets of the Village filled with the holiday spirit for the Mechanicsville Rotary/Ruritan Christmas Parade. Minor injuries were reported along the parade route when two falls took place. Hanover Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Gregory Martin, who serves as public information officer, said the incidents occurred in
separate locations. “One incident, at approximately 3 p.m. on Atlee Road, involved an adult walking in front of a parade float. Their pants leg was pulled by the fender of a parade float, causing them to fall. The initial report of the parade float running over the adult was incorrect. The adult sustained a leg injury and was transported to a local area hospital, Martin said. “The second incident, at approximately 3:18 p.m. on
Strain Avenue, involved a child who was running, fell and sustained a minor injury. The child was transported to a local area hospital for evaluation, he said. In both cases, Fire-EMS personnel immediately responded as many crews were taking part in the parade. Taking home trophies for their parade entries were: Kim’s School of Dance, Best in Keeping with the Theme (Christmas Eve Magic); Grace Christian School, Judges’ Pick; Silver Stirrups, Best Equestrian

BPES named National PTA School of Excellence Award recognizes leadership in building strong, effective family-school partnerships MECHANICSVILLE – Battlefield Park Elementary School has been named a 2017-2019 National PTA School of Excellence. BPES is one of only 143 schools and PTAs from 29 states across the country to achieve this prestigious status this year. “We are very appreciative of the strong partnership with our PTA president, board, and general membership who always put our students first to help keep our mission and vision alive. They invest significant time and resources into providing our students, staff, and families with fun, engaging, and relevant experiences throughout the year. I am equally appreciative of our outstanding teachers and support staff who are com-
mitted to our unwavering focus of equity and the success of all students,” Judith Bradley, principal, said. “The PTA is thrilled to accept this exciting award on behalf of our beloved school. Many of us are BPES alumni, and we are proud that our children are sitting in the same desks and classrooms that we did many years ago. The sense of family is obvious when you walk in our doors, and we thank Mrs. Bradley and Mrs. (Jaclyn) McCaleb (assistant principal) for their constant support throughout this process. We humbly accept this award, which represents the positive climate and culture that is evident at BPES,” Stacey Giles, PTA president, said. The National PTA School of Excellence designation rec-

Vaccines will be administered at a cost of $8 per dog or cat. The next rabies vaccination clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Hanover County Administration Building at 7516 County Complex Rd. at Hanover
Courthouse. The final rabies vaccination clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 at the East Hanover Rescue Squad at 8105 Walnut Grove Rd. in Mechanicsville. At each of these clinics, the veterinarian will administer the shots to the pet at your vehicle; do not bring pets into the building. You will complete your registration inside the facility and return to your vehicle. Drive to the area designated for vaccination. You will be expected to leave the vaccination area as soon as you are done. see RABIES, pg. 4

Santa Runs continue in county HANOVER – Hanover Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Gregory R. Martin, who also serves as public information officer, has released the schedule of Santa Runs for the various departments and also explained there will be changes to this year’s routes. “Due to challenges in the past, we are making modifications to the routes that we usually travel. These modifications are: Focusing our efforts towards our target audience of elementary school age children. Improving customer service and Santa visibility by using pre-established elementary school bus routes. “In the past, we have attempted to travel all the roads, including the cul-desacs, in Station 3, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 14’s districts. As the county has grown, this has been a significant challenge to maintain,” Martin said. “To continue our focus on the elementary age children, we will follow the 2017-2018 Hanover County Elementary School bus routes. This will allow for safer and continuous travel throughout the neighborhoods. Our biggest concern will always remain the public’s safety,” he said. In an effort to better communicate, Martin said each company will be assigned a separate Twitter account, which can be used to update Santa’s progress and estimated arrival time. The Twitter accounts are: Station 1 – Hanoverfe_elf1; Station 3 – Hanoverfe_elf3; Station 7 – Hanoverfe_elf7; Station 10 – Hanoverfe_elf10; and Station 12 – Hanoverfe_ elf12. There is magic in the air this holiday season
| Reader Views
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor OK, I’ll confess: I’m a 61-year-old kid when it comes to the Christmas season. I love how we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. I love the songs. I love the decorations. I love the magic that the season brings. I love the sparkle of amazement in the faces of little ones. This year will be especially delightful for this old kid. I have a great-nephew who is 14 months old (that counting a child’s age in months always threw me off -- part of never being a parent, I guess). Anyway, Bailey is so smart and funny. But I’m especially impressed by how inquisitive he is. Our extended family plans to get a minibus later this month for the Tacky Lights Tour. This
will be more enjoyable with a toddler absorbing the sights and sounds. Mom is eager to watch is reactions as we make the rounds. So, the house is decorated and, even though the tree won Round 1, Mom and I bested it by doing a little cheating with the connections of lights. We always reminisce as we go through the boxes and boxes of ornaments -- so many have a story associated with them. There are memories of loved ones who are no longer with us and good times with travels. The icing on the cake was Sunday’s Mechanicsville Christmas Parade, which, as always, attracted a large turnout into the Village. Only the Hanover Tomato Festival draws more people into our community.
Watching from the judging area (certainly one of the best seats in the house as it were) brings the full effect of the holiday into perspective. With floats, some religious, marching bands, businesses, and lots of children, it’s an afternoon of wonder, regardless of age. As a member of my high school’s marching band, I fondly remember the enthusiasm of the spectators as we made our way along the parade route. It’s the same here, with so many talented students taking part. Yes, the holiday season is in full swing now, so get out, shop local, and remember the reason for the season. This is a time when age doesn’t matter because there truly is magic in the air.
Nov. 22, 1963 -- a day that took away innocence By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Sitting in Ms. Adams’ fifth period English class was never easy. The class came at the end of a long day for students who were just becoming accustomed to changing classes and assuming roles as bonafide students. And, on Fridays, the minutes on the clock above the blackboard seemed to move painfully slow as the anticipation of a weekend without
school increased with each passing second. The small speaker below the clock crackled once before any voices could be heard, and often it cracked followed by silence and no announcement ensued. But, this time was different and our principal, B.T. Doyle, began searching for words to describe the unimaginable to his student body. “President Kennedy was shot today in Dallas,” Doyle began. He didn’t provide the details or the ulti-

mate terror of the final result, but the announcement was like no other in my memory, and Doyle’s voice indicated a seriousness that I’d seldom heard in my short life. “Yeah, I pulled back on my trusty slingshot and let go a shot right at the president,” joked our class clown who always had an inappropriate comment for almost any situation. No one laughed, and the teacher quickly told him to shut up. I wonder to this day if that person
realizes the stupidity of his comment at such a period in our nation’s history. I never forgot, and, when I see this guy even today, I can only think of his stupid words following the news. The scope of the national tragedy was not evident to us as eighthgraders, but the tears in our teacher’s eyes provided a clue that the next few days would be surreal, almost otherworldly. see NOV. 22, pg. 8

Comp Plan has obscure concept for ‘complete streets’ The draft Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan) contains a new “active and healthy living” section centered on an obscure concept: “complete streets.” Don’t be fooled. Complete streets has nothing to do with completing road improvements to Atlee Station Road, Mechanicsville Turnpike, Pole Green Road or any Hanover road that has been burdened by traffic or broken by development. “Complete streets,” and related “traffic calming” and “road diet” concepts, are planning speak for narrowing roads, eliminating travel and turn lanes, and adding bike lanes, speed bumps, signalized cross walks, and mini-traffic islands. These concepts are appropriate in highly urbanized, densely populated counties, not Hanover. The National Complete Streets Coalition (NCSC), a private public partnership, sets policies, details requirements, and grades jurisdictions on how they implement the ten elements of a complete streets policy. The elements include a complete streets vision, apply to both new and retrofitted roads, direct use of the latest and best design criteria, and establish performance standards with measurable outcomes. The Comp Plan’s elements and strategies reflect NCSC mandates. Not surprisingly, Arlington is the only Virginia county that is a NCSC partner. In Arlington, the Metro system, major urban commercial development, a national airport, and the federal government impose staggering auto, bus, pedestrian, bike, and mass transit demands on a small county. see LETTERS, pg. 8

Arlington taxes are high and pervasive. Hanover County has nothing in common with Arlington. Like the misguided trial balloon to sacrifice the established Spring Meadows community to a “mixed use” future, Hanover does not need big planning, a graded partnership with NCSC, or unfunded complete streets mandates to retrofit roads or relieve massive urban transit stress. Complete streets will slow traffic and make it worse, divert resources from pressing road, schools, and water-sewer infrastructure needs, and further divide our county. In Hanover, complete streets is a flawed solution to a non-existent problem and must be eliminated from the Comp Plan. Bob Nelson Mechanicsville
Peace offers thanks, looks at new year Continuing in service as your state delegate to the Virginia General Assembly is a great honor and privilege. My family and I were deeply humbled by the impressive victory given to us on Election Day. These results provide us the encouragement to continue to work hard to represent all residents of the 97th District with grace and dignity which you have come to expect. Please accept my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all my volunteers who spent hours going door-to-door, and especially to you, the voters, for your overwhelming support. Regardless of whether you voted for me, it remains my intention to continue to earn your support as your representative in Richmond. I pledge to continue in my role as a principled, common sense conservative. I will
always maintain a respect for those with whom I disagree and a compassion for those who cannot help themselves. Please do not hesitate to contact me during session at DelCPeace@house.virginia. gov or by phone at 804-6981097. You may always follow me at @DelCPeace on Twitter or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/delegatepeace. Shortly after the election, I attended the annual House budget committee retreat in Portsmouth. Please allow me to share some of the information that I believe will shape much of the debate in the 2018 General Assembly Session. Balancing our state budget will require a continued emphasis on conservative, prudent budgeting, as well as a focus on cost savings and efficiencies across agencies and services. While the economy is showing signs of sustained growth, Virginia’s revenue levels remain sluggish at present. As a result, our Committee is predicting mandatory spending requirements will outweigh available revenues in each year
of the biennium unless we make tough decisions to fulfill our constitutional obligation of a balanced budget. It is still my hope that Federal tax reform would further boost a robust marketplace; however, our primary budgeting goal will be to ensure consistent funding for core services and programs while strengthening our revenue reserves for any potential economic down-turn. Weak revenue growth and disruptions from the federal government including the failure to reauthorize funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or continued defense spending cuts pose significant challenges. Re-benchmarking, the process by which the state updates Direct Aid funding for K-12 education every two years, is expected to be a major cost driver at approximately $600 million. Public schools are a critical part of our community. I remain committed to fully funding the Standards of Quality and will work to ensure

that each of our counties receives its fair share of state aid. Our children and those who educate them deserve the best educational system we can provide. Elsewhere, the state’s share of costs for Medicaid are expected to continue to grow, with an even greater cost burden if CHIP is not reauthorized by Congress. Preliminary budget requests from agencies submitted in October totals $1.1 billion in FY19 and $1.3 billion in FY20, not including major cost drivers, such as the Medicaid forecast and retirement and health insurance rate adjustments. In closing, please keep our Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, the legislature and my family and I, in particular, in your thoughts and prayers as we try to resolve these weighty matters in the best interests of your family, our district and the Commonwealth. I always welcome a visit to the State Capitol, and especially invite your input and advice on these important matters or others of importance to you and your family. Ruthanna Rudolph Wilkinson, formerly of Hanover, died in her daughter’s home in Front Royal on November 19, 2017, at the age of 96. Born on September 29, 1921, in Findlay, Ohio, to Charles and Kizzie Rudolph, she was the youngest of their six daughters. Ruthanna graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, with undergraduate degrees in English and music education. She moved to Richmond after her college mentor, Wendell Sanderson, who had become
director of music for the Richmond Public Schools, invited her to join his teaching staff. She soon became the alto soloist for the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church choir in Richmond, where she met her future husband, Clyde Wilkinson, the choir’s baritone soloist. Ruthanna was dedicated to music and to teaching, and her home was filled with the tools of her craft: oatmeal box drums, recorders, autoharps, xylophones and the family piano, and with her art music played on any available instrument and song. After a hiatus from teaching to raise her family, and meeting the challenge of being an adult student WILKINSON before adult education was in the mainstream, she was awarded her M.A. in music education from VCU and returned to teaching music in Richmond’s elementary schools. Along with her husband and several other accomplished musicians, she formed the Mutual Friends of Music, a madrigal group that performed in the Richmond area during

initiated in March with a kickoff event. As of Saturday, Dec. 2, those walk-up services are available in Hanover to those who need them. Hanover’s efforts are the result of a statewide effort called STEP (System Transformation Excellence and Performance), a multi-year plan to address challenges in the CSB system. Hanover’s initiative is a three-pronged attack that includes collaborative documentation, a procedure that allows patients to discuss and analyze results with officials. Centralized scheduling also is a major portion of the STEP program in Hanover, and there is a pilot program in place that seeks to ensure quicker access to services and greater efficiency. “This centralized process allows for more immediate client access to a scheduler for appointment changes and greater efficiency for staff being available for any time their schedule allows . . . not spend-
ing clinical time negotiating that schedule,” Hanover Community Services Board executive director Ivy Sager said at a recent meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. The redesign efforts also are geared to provide same day access for clients seeking services, but Sager told supervisors the expanded effort would require additional staff resources. With front desk staff duties expanded with centralized scheduling responsibilities, the department has been awarded $270,000 from the state to expand its staff. The department was seeking a $202,000 appropriation for FY 2018 to support the new positions required to improve access. The Commonwealth provides about 80 percent of that funding. “Four positions are being requested to support our same day access efforts at Hanover’s CSB,” Sager said. The positions include two administrative assistants, an outreach and intake specialist, and a clinical supervisor for access. Same day access will allow clients to complete applications
and background forms on the same day they arrive, receive an assessment and, within seven days, are meeting with a clinician and receiving treatment. “As an agency, staff have been very focused and committed over that last year in developing the same day model. We see it as a best practice in behavioral health care and are eager to offer this level of service to our residents,” Sager said. Jeanie Edwards, chairperson of the Hanover County Community Services Board, also thinks the new same day access will enhance services. “As a Boarb, we are really excited about this important step and think it will be very beneficial to county residents,” she said. Supervisors had some questions regarding flexibility of the program and how Hanover’s department can adjust to improve efficiency if the current alignment does not yield results. Sager assured them the program will be closely monitored to make sure it is achieving the desired results, and offered to provide a six-month update on the program next year.

Ashland lights up the tracks to boost visitors and sales By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The Town of Ashland continued its holiday festivities on Friday with the third annual “Light Up the Tracks!” event at the Hanover Arts & Activities Center. “We had a full crowd at the beautifully decorated Center to enjoy music, dance and theatre performances. Central Virginia Dance Academy performed selections from ‘The Nutcracker,’ [and] The Whistle Stop Theatre Company performed a couple of scenes from their production of ‘Little Women,’” said Lorie Foley, who manages public relations for the Ashland Main Street Association. Foley also said that 804 Dance Place performed various dance numbers, and the all-male chorus of “Hanover Harmony” sang holiday-spirited songs. “They even got the audience to join in with them,” she said after the event. “After the main program, Santa and Rudolph stopped by to visit with the children. It was a quintessential Ashland event – magical and lovely,” Foley said. The Whistle Stop Theatre Company also presented an exclusive sneak peek of its

newest adaptation, “The Little Match Girl.” Audiences were delighted as the classic work of Hans Christian Andersen was brought to life in time for the holiday season. “Light Up the Tracks!” is sponsored by AMSA, but the nonprofit organization partnered together with HAAC for the Dec. 1 event. Starting off the month-long celebration with “Light Up the Center,” and throughout the rest of December until New Year’s Day, the portion of town that lines the railroad tracks, including downtown Ashland businesses, Randolph-Macon College and trackside residences, will be decorated with sparkling lights from one end
of town to the other. There will continue to be holiday-focused events throughout that time as well. On Saturday, Dec. 2, Santa Claus strolled through down-
toric downtown portion of the “Center of The Universe” to enjoy the holiday lights, as well as to shop and dine in Ashland’s trackside shops and restaurants, the Main Street

AMSA encourages local business owners who have shops in downtown Ashland to consider booking an event or two under the umbrella of “Light Up the Tracks!” The local organization, part of Virginia Main Street, will help those companies’ marketing efforts for their holiday events and activities. “The Gingerbread Trail” has returned this year to produce more gingerbread creations to be displayed in downtown businesses and dining establishments. Throughout the winter, locally grown and grass-fed beef, chicken and pork are usually available, as well as seasonal vegetables and hydroponic lettuce and greens. In addition, you’ll find cage-free eggs, homemade breads, cookies, pies, biscotti, scones, and granola, plus homemade jams, jellies, pickles and artisan soaps. Everything is produced within a 30-mile radius. The Renegade Farmers Market was started in 2008 by Keenbell Farm, a multi-generational family farm that has been in Hanover since 1951, according to Charles Isbell. They began selling their meats at the Ashland Farmers Market that same year. “We offer a variety of 100% grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, and free-range eggs throughout the year. yeast and sweet breads, including sourdough, deli rye, peppery cheddar, asiago, and herb breads. They also produce organic dried herbs, teas and garlic. Other regular winter market vendors include Delli Carpini (fresh produce), Dragonfly Farms (grass-fed beef and lamb, and vegetable, herb and bedding plants), and Rina Factory Home Baked Goods, (biscotti, scones, sweets, etc.). “We’ve seen a steady increase in the number of people who visit the winter markets since we became vendors here about five years ago. For some reason, I began to cry with her as we lamented the fate of a young president with a young family, and the senseless nature of the crime. The days that followed seemed almost dream-like with no semblance to normalcy as a nation grieved an almost unthinkable end to a presidency. Even the President’s opponents seemed shocked with the unbelievable set of events. Local dentist faces federal health care fraud charge By Frank Green Richmond Times-Dispatch RICHMOND -- A Hanover County dentist is facing federal charges in a scheme that allegedly netted almost $800,000 in fraudulent billings to Medicaid and four private insurers. Maryam A. Zarei, the owner and operator of Atlee Station Family Dentistry, was named in a five-page criminal information alleging health care fraud filed in U.S. District Court in Richmond last week that seeks the forfeiture of at least $616,680 in proceeds made from the offense. request for comment Thursday. No initial court appearance or a defense lawyer have been posted in the case. The U.S. attorney’s office alleges that from January 2013 through last December, Zarei billed Medicaid and the insurers for services that were never rendered including purported crowns, restorations, surgical extractions of baby teeth and root canals. Some of the services allegedly billed for were said to have occurred at times when Zarei was out of the country while some insurers were billed for services performed after the
patient’s coverage had ended — but the claims were backdated to make it appear they were covered. One alleged example cited in court filings was that, in May 2014, Zarei submitted a bill for $614.40 claiming that fillings were performed on four of a patient’s teeth when the patient only had two fillings in the nine years she had been treated at the practice. Nor had the same patient been given four fillings and a root canal in July 2014 for $1,094.40. Zarei was out of the country on both dates the pro-

A small plane crashed around 3:42 p.m. last Wednesday at River Road and Williamsville Road in Hanover County. Sgt. Keeli L. Hill, public information officer, Virginia State Police, Division 1, said the preliminary investigation reveals that the pilot, Merlin Wayne Myers, 77, of Mechanicsville, had to make an emergency landing due to mechanical issues with the engine. In the course of the landing, Hill said the plane sustained significant damage and rested upside down in a field. Myers sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) was notified and responded to the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the VSP.

A group of Vietnam veterans were invited to participate in the recognition of the 35th anniversary of the Vietnam Wall honoring the 52,000-plus veterans who died serving our country during that war. The First Union Baptist Church veterans were asked to participate in the recognition by reading the names of their deceased brothers during the ceremony. The honor of calling names started on Tuesday, Nov. 7, and lasted until Friday midnight. First Union veterans, Rev. Lewis R. Yancey, pastor, and friends chartered a bus to travel to the memorial to be a part of this honor. The entire group gathered in front of the wall. George Crockett, chairman of the church’s Diaconte board, is shown in the photo on the left below and Rev. Yancey is on the right. They joined in reading the names.

As always, the event wrapped up with an appearance by Santa Claus, who was atop a fire truck from Station 7. He waved and greeted young and old alike before he makes his return on Christmas Eve. Marching bands, cheerleaders, JROTC groups, churches and custom vehicles were among the participants participating in the 2017 parade. Chairman Ronnie Planz said he was pleased with the weather and turnout as blue skies and sunshine welcomed spectators and participants.

Basketball teams can expect improvement By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local
C-feds win Classic
The good news: It’s a near certainty that the boys basketball teams at Hanover County high schools will improve their collective record in 2017-18. The news that’s better or worse, depending on how you view the water in the glass, is that there’s still much more room for improvement after that. The leading returning scorer at Atlee (4-19 in 2016-17) is sophomore Tyler Warren. LeeDavis (3-19) will start the season with two sophomores in its starting lineup. Patrick Henry (3-19) gets back five players from last season, with its top returner, junior guard Devyn Coles, returning from a serious facial injury. Meanwhile, the two area schools that finished .500 or better last year, Hanover (1414) and King William (15-6), will be breaking in a host of newcomers. In other words, there should be a wide range of outcomes is in play. Here’s as much sense as we can make of things.

Dave Lawrence/The Local
Lee-Davis’ Adam Bartley (12) blocks a shot by King William’s Cameron Cooksey (3) in the Confederates’ 61-42 win Friday.
Atlee Warren, a 6-foot-5 forward/ center, is drawing high majorcollege football interest as a quarterback, but he averaged 10 points and six rebounds for a team that struggled to compete with bigger opponents. Joining
him in the projected starting lineup are three seniors, including guard Carson Miller, who averaged eight points last year. That’s about it for the proven commodities at Atlee. Two seniors who are likely to
start, forward Kyle Karabiac and guard Cameron Smith, combined to average three points per game last season. The fifth starter, junior guard Jayce Catterton, played on the junior varsity last season,
as did rotation guard/forward Alan Williams. Juniors Andrew Cook and Jackson Baitinger will be asked to contribute more after playing limited roles. With Warren the only player taller than 6-foot-2, the Raiders
will be smaller than most teams. How well they adapt to new coach Rally Axselle’s system will determine if they can overcome that size deficit. see BASKETBALL, pg. 28

GLEN ALLEN – The Lee-Davis and Atlee wrestling teams finished first and second, respectively, in the Central Virginia Classic at Glen Allen High School Friday and Saturday. The Confederates handily outscored the opposition with 237.5 points. Atlee scored 169 points, followed by Grassfield (164.5), Powhatan (139) and Prince George (136.5). Hanover finished sixth in the field of 16 teams with 133 points. Lee-Davis had four winners: Jonathon Conrad at 145 pounds, Fisher Evans at 152, Andy Aldridge at 170 and Ned Anthony at 195. Lee-Davis overcomes slow start to beat Cavs By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – There was no lack of effort on the floor when King William’s boys basketball team traveled to Lee-Davis Friday night. Experience and, on King William’s side, size were another matter. Both teams scrapped and ran and – despite trailing the entire game – the Cavaliers kept the score close until the Confederates’ greater height and deeper bench gave LeeDavis an edge in the fourth quarter in their 61-42 win over their neighbors. Lee- Davis head coach Chad Bishop laughed when he heard the game described as “scrappy.” “Yeah, apparently it was pretty scrappy,” he said. “The guys have to learn to play with their feet, defend with their feet. … We’ve got to do a better job of being in the passing lanes instead of trying to steal the ball from the ball-handler – get in the passing lanes. That was what we talked about at halftime.” The attempts to steal sometimes worked. They certainly got the Cavaliers to rush their offense and frequently turn the

We wore them down and came away with the win.” But the Cavaliers – which feature a lot of guard-sized freshmen and sophomores – likewise committed their share of fouls, sending the Confederates to the foul line numerous times. Lee-Davis made King William pay, converting 28 of 41 free throw attempts. “This year, every game is a learning moment,” said King William head coach Joe Harper, whose team features only one player with significant playing time last year. “There’s no reason to get mad and upset and scream and yell because most of these kids are sophomores – a few freshmen – sophomores and juniors. … They have to learn. So you have to be patient, motivate them – especially keep them motivated – and it will be all right.” Harper likened the growth Dave Lawrence/The Local stage his team is in to that of a King William’s Kyle Lynch (34) cannot keep Lee-Davis’ Avery Fusco (23) from scoring two of his 12 points in the Confederates’ 61toddler learning to walk. 42 win over the visiting Cavaliers Friday. A trio of guards, senior Jaylin Ross and juniors Will Fahed and Josh Blue, are the most pedigreed of the returning players, but Thornton will lean on his team’s depth as he did during last year’s playoff run. That includes three talented freshmen in guard D.J. Sims and forwards James Stephens and Trevor Brooks. The downside, like at Atlee, is a lack of size – at 6-foot-6, sophomore newcomer Stephen

Uncertainty reigns as girls teams take court excellent on the defensive end. When they’re playing at a high level, it raises everybody else’s level.” Rohr also has high hopes for athletic freshman guard/ forward Julia Mardigian, while juniors Ellen Palya and Emily Carr return after getting experience as the Hawks went 13-11 last season. But he saves some of his biggest praise for Johnson’s efforts to improve during her short basketball career. “She had never played before her freshman year and she’s turned herself into a really solid post player for us,” he said. “She’s in the gym constantly working. She’s playing year-round now. She’s really solidified that middle for us and given us some size that we haven’t had in a while.”
By Chip Knighton For The Mechanicsville Local Hanover and King William girls basketball teams occupy a state of uncertainty entering the 2017-2018 season, with numerous teams young and looking to gel and improve. The biggest shoes to fill are at Atlee, where center Alyse Armentrout and her 18.6 points, 15.3 rebounds and 8.7 blocks per game have moved on, along with eight other seniors. Here’s a look at where area teams hope to improve in 201718. Atlee As noted above, Armentrout, an all-state selection in 2016-17, leaves a massive hole for coach Michael Rawlings that hasn’t been filled the way he expected thus far. Freshman guard Kelly Ayer averaged 20 points over the first two games, which might be fitting for a team without a senior in the rotation and two other key freshman contributors in guards Khari Rucker and Laci Miller. Rawlings is pleased with Ayer’s production but hopes to get more from his upperclassmen to diversify his offense. “Freshmen scare me because I see all of them hit a wall,” he said. “Some of the best players I’ve had since I started coaching here, some of those 1,000-point scorers, have hit that wall as the season has gone on.” That doesn’t mean the Raiders are completely lacking in experience – junior guard Aya Yousef returns after starting last year and averaging 10 points per game – but they are short on size, with junior center Addison Raso the only real source of height. That’s quite a contrast from last year, when Armentrout dominated the paint in a 22-7 season.

Lee-Davis’ Madison Williams completes her breakaway with a basket to give the Confederates a 17-14 lead with 2:30 to go in the second period of their 44-35 win over host King William Friday. Williams finished with nine points.
“Our rebounding is our No. 1 issue now,” Rawlings said. “We’re young and we’re small, and we can’t rebound well enough against most teams, so we’re trying to find ways to overcome that deficiency. We’re
boast two upperclassmen with good size to lean on. Senior point guard Rachael Metzger (5-foot-10) and junior center Sarah Johnson (6-foot1) boast size and experience, Hanover The Hawks, in contrast, while sophomore guard Jordan
hoping that hustle, grit and determination can get us some of those 50-50 balls that can make a big difference.”

The Mechanicsville Local
Lee-Davis Codie Heilig, meanwhile, is the engine for the Confederates in her second year as a team captain. The versatile, 5-foot-11 junior plays all over the wing and can score in multiple ways. “She rebounds well,” coach Alvin Puller said. “She can shoot the 3-pointer. She can drive to the basket and finish. If you need points, she’ll get points.” That’s important for a team that can struggle to put the ball in the basket at times and has only one other returning starter in forward Megan Brooks. Senior Shaniya Bond transferred in from Spotsylvania and is expected to help anchor the Lee-Davis defense along with junior guard Madison Williams. Puller hopes his teams can find a more consistent second option behind Heilig as he works in freshman Carlee Harding and waits on the arrival of middle-school standout Madison Butler next season. see UNCERTAINTY, pg. 30

Heilig leads Lee-Davis to win over Cavaliers
plan and by issues with his own players. “Our hope is to be able to play up-tempo and pressure people this year,” Puller said. “But with the injuries and foul troubles we had tonight, it made us slow down and focus
on half-court play.” The Confederate offense suddenly came alive in the second quarter, reeling off six straight points to pull within one of King William at 11-10. King William head coach Kerry Johnson called a timeout
to try to stop the Lee-Davis momentum, but it wasn’t enough. Heilig drained a threepointer to tie the game with just over five minutes left in the first half. Then, with 4:17 left in the half, Sweeney sank a free throw to put her team up
for the first time in the contest. The Confederates would never relinquish their lead. “I would say most of our problems tonight were the result of inexperience,” Johnson said. “When we’re trying to get the ball up the court, everybody
is in a rush. They need to learn to slow it down and play the game.” Nearly half of Heilig’s points came from the free-throw line, where she went 10-of-16 on the night. Mallory Salmon led all King William scorers with 16 points, including going 7-of-13 from the line. Both coaches pointed to the need for more time on the court for their teams, and both believe that fans can expect improvement from each squad. “It’s a process. They’re getting there,” Johnson said of his young Cavalier team. “We’ve got some great players running around the court, so we’ll get there. I know that. But it’s going to take them some time to get it all to click.” Puller echoed those sentiments. “I think we’re going to get better throughout the season,” he said. “We need to get more familiar with each other. We’ve got a bunch of young girls that haven’t been playing together for too long. Once they gel as a team, I think we’ll be pretty good.” Andrew Spencer can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.
season turn into a nightmare last year when Aryna Taylor, now at Mount St. Mary’s, went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and the Patriots stumbled to a 4-19 record after winning 15 games in 2015-16. “That was a big blow to us,” Cobb said. “We had to start the rebuilding process a year earlier than anticipated. This year, we have a lot of inexperience, but I’m excited to have that youth at the same time.” The silver lining to that lost season came in the development of 5-foot-10 guard
JaBryah Haverkamp, now a junior expected to carry a heavy load for a team without a senior on the roster. Classmate Hailey Draper also brings experience, while Jamie Hughes got valuable playing time as a freshman and will be expected to hold down the post for the Patriots. Three newcomers – sophomore Blair Rhodes and freshmen Ava Smith and Sydney Miceli – bring defensive intensity as they gain experience. They and their teammates will be hindered by a lack of size, but not energy.
“Our goal is just to get better every single week,” Cobb said. “It’s going to be a lot of coaching and a lot of teaching, but we’re excited to work with these girls.”
being overwhelmed on the boards. Coach Kerry Johnson hopes to hassle other teams into turnovers to compensate. “We’re trying to use our speed,” he said. “We’re trying to double-team. We’re trying to press a little bit more and create a little havoc with opposing teams.” That starts with guard MiKayla Richardson, the team’s lone senior and the linchpin Johnson relies on to keep the offense humming. She’ll be relied on – along with junior KaDedra Temple, the leading
returning scorer and rebounder at 7.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game – to keep the younger Cavaliers on task. “They’re still making some of the same mistakes, but they’re learning from some mistakes,” Johnson said. “They’re learning not to force as many balls. They’re picking up on things here and there. They’re beginning to play as a team more than as younger kids. The chemistry is coming together.” Chip Knighton can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.
By Andrew Spencer for the Mechanicsville Local CENTRAL GARAGE – LeeDavis, led by 25 points from junior Codie Heilig, brushed off a slow start to earn a 44-35 victory over host King William Friday night. The hosts came out strong, pulling out to an early fivepoint lead at the end of the first quarter. Just as importantly, the Confederates found themselves in early foul trouble, with Emma Sweeney racking up three fouls in just the first quarter. But it was the lack of offense that concerned the Confederate faithful in attendance. LeeDavis only managed four points in the first quarter, two of which came on free-throws. Confederate head coach Alvin Puller attributed his team’s slow start to the King William offense. “We started off by trying to press them a little bit,” he said. “But they beat the press. So we slowed it down and sat back in a zone, and they had trouble handling that.” Slow play is not the preferred style for Puller and his Confederates, but he said that he was forced to slow it down both by the King William game

There were a lot of moments where we could have drove, but we stayed outside and shot the ball,” he said. “To [Henrico’s] credit, they played great defense and pushed the pace, so shots that looked like they were open weren’t good shots.” Brown finished with a double-double for Patrick Henry, adding 10 rebounds to his scoring total. Devyn Coles chipped in eight points and two rebounds while Melvin France scored seven points and Rory Ailor grabbed five rebounds. By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The year and players might be different, but Henrico boys basketball is still played the same way: hardnosed defense leads to opportunities on offense. Patrick Henry found this out the hard way on Tuesday night, turning the ball over 18 times and shooting 27.9 percent in a 65-36 loss to the Warriors in the season opener for both teams. The Patriots jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter using patient offense and tough defense on Henrico guard Timon Jones to take the early advantage. But, as Henrico began to settle in to its defense, Patrick Henry was unable to keep up. The first quarter ended in an 8-8 tie, and the Warriors opened up an eight-point lead in the second quarter by holding the Patriots without a field goal for the first 4:27 of the period. “We knew what [Henrico] were about. The crazy thing is, they have one returning starter and basically a whole new team. But, that’s them,” said Patrick Henry head coach Randy Anderson. “They know what they’re going to do, and they’re going to let that defense create the offense.

The Patriots broke the ice with back-to-back field goals to cut Henrico’s lead to 17-13 with 2:40 remaining in the half. But the Warriors answered down the stretch, finishing the half on a 9-3 run to take a 26-16 lead into the locker room. Jones

Sophomores Elijah Jones and James Wallace III join Christian in the backcourt, and how well those two can handle the point guard position will go a long way toward determining whether Lee-Davis can take a big step in Bishop’s third season. Juniors Dontae Baker, a transfer from Hermitage, and Tyler Berry will play key roles
in the press as the Confederates look to leverage their athleticism and make up for a relative lack of size – senior Stephon Sparks and junior Avery Fusco, both bench players, are the tallest players on the roster at 6-foot-4. “There’s no excuses for it, but we started two sophomores and a freshman,” Bishop said. “In this area, playing the teams we play, that’s not going to be a
recipe for success. But they took their lumps and stuck together and hopefully we’ll reap the rewards.”
Lee-Davis The Confederates are both experienced and callow, with eight returning players but multiple sophomores in the rotation. That has coach Chad Bishop hoping for continued improvement. This year, they’ll rely on do-it-all senior Cole Keech and junior guard Devin Christian,

Kontopanos paces Yellow Jackets in R-MC meet By Andrew Spencer for the Mechanicsville Local RICHMOND – Freshman swimmer Victor Kontopanos gave Randolph-Macon the highlight of its weekend by winning the 200-meter butterfly in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Collegiate School Aquatic Center Friday and Saturday. Kontopanos finished in 1:52.80, a record for both the meet as well as the Yellow Jackets’ men’s swimming and diving team. He shattered the school’s previous record by a full three seconds and helped Randolph-Macon to finish in the middle of the pack of nine teams in fifth place. Howard (1,333.5 points), Washington (1,323.5) and Catholic (1,241) took the top three places in the men’s competition. The Yellow Jacket women’s team (1,082 points) finished third behind Catholic (1,307 points) and Catawba (1,186). “We’re very happy with how the meet went,” said RandolphMacon head coach Brent Kintzer. “This is a training meet for us. are solid defensively and can get to the basket, but their experience may be their most valuable trait. The negative for the Patriots – and it’s a familiar one if you’ve read this far – is a lack of size in the frontcourt, where Shephon Wattie’s strength and toughness will be missed. Senior forward Noah Carroll, playing in his first year on varsity, will be asked to shoulder much of the interior load at 6-foot-3. That’s a tough sell against tough early-season foes like Henrico, Caroline and

with Kontopanos’ win. Finishing the 200 butterfly with a win was nice,” Kintzer said. “We’ve got a freshman who has a great shot at going to the NCAA championships. That’s great for us.” Kontopanos had a feeling
that a record was within his grasp. “I knew I was out fast, so I was happy about that,” he said. “And there were so many people at the end of the lane and they were screaming their heads off. I knew something good was

with replacing them are short on experience. For his 18th season, coach Joe Harper returns a total of six points per game in his starting lineup, with sophomore guard Marc Gresham representing half that output. He’ll be joined in the starting lineup by classmate Skylar Stone and 6-foot-5 freshman Ethan Gibson, whom Harper expects to be one of the top players in Conference 33 immediately. Seniors Hunter Goodman and Cameron Cooksey bring veteran savvy, if not established production, to the King William lineup, but there’s a lot of green behind them. Sophomore
Gavin Lipscomb will be the top reserve for a team that will rely on speed and hustle to overcome youthful jitters. “It’s like any kid when they learn to walk. They have to get up and fall down,” Harper said. “These kids have to learn what’s a good shot, what’s a bad shot, and they have to be in those situations repetitively until they learn what they can and can’t do. Overall, I think we’ve got ourselves in a good position to challenge those top swimmers.” The Randoph-Macon coaching staff came away from this year’s Invitational with an optimistic outlook towards the future of the Yellow Jackets program. “We’re in a good spot. We’ve got a lot of things that we’re going to build off of,” Kintzer said. “Meets like this help us see what our training has done for our athletes so far this season. We need to make sure that we
continue to build in the weight room and make sure that our pace work gets us down to where we want our goal times to be. “But we saw some great swims in this meet, so we’ve got a lot of hope for all of our athletes.” Both the men’s and women’s teams will have some time to rest up and prepare before their next meet, which will be a trisquad meet with York College and Frostburg State at York on Jan. 13. Officials tour ongoing progress at Ashland Theatre By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Nearing its completion, the historical Ashland Theatre is advancing in its construction process to renovate the building into a treasure the town can enjoy, use and be proud of. For many years, the familiar but noticeably idle and underutilized building, which originally opened in 1948, is being renovated to include the uniqueness of the old-style theater, but with additions acceptable for venues to be held. The Ashland Theatre also has been upgraded to being completely Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)accessible. On Tuesday, Dec. 28, a hard-hat tour of the renovation’s status was hosted by the Ashland Theatre Foundation (ATF), as well as the project’s contractor, co-contractor and construction crew. Ashland Town Council advertised a special meeting
Nick Liberante and Logan Barry for The Local
Above, electricians work on the addition to the back of the Ashland Theatre. This new space will have dressing rooms, a green room and administrative offices on the second floor. At right, touring the ongoing construction at the Ashland Theater were, from left, Brent Chambers, the husband of Ashland Theatre Foundation board member Jen Chambers; Baxter Carter; Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Gill; Marilyn Trivett; and her husband, Vice Mayor Steve Trivett.
for which the purpose of, “was to show off what the Ashland Theatre Foundation has been up to and to introduce our newly hired executive director Douglas Love-Ramos,” Councilwoman Kathy Abbott said. Abbott’s serves as the council’s theatre liaison. “We invited other local offi-
cials as well. The tour was led by all of the Ashland Theatre Foundation board members,” Abbott said. Foundation board members taking the tour included: Clark Mercer, president; Hugh Joyce, vice president; Jen Chambers, treasurer; Madeleine Alderman; and Abbott.
Joyce said the new and improved theatre will be great. He talked about the Foundation’s purpose in renovating the theatre, saying how they wanted “to get involved with Ashland in every way we can to dig a little deeper and be a little more compelling than the other entertainment
options you might run into.” Contractors included Ashland-based ChopperDawson and Scott Brannon from F. Richard Wilton Jr. Inc. “Those two guys are working together to do the project,” Joyce said He said the theatre is leased and operated by ATF, and the
Theatre Foundation is renting the theatre from the Town of Ashland for a dollar … We are managing the construction, [and] we’ll manage the operation, ongoing when the renovations are complete.” He credited the Ashland Main Street Association (AMSA) for its role in the theatre’s restoration process. Joyce said “AMSA was very instrumental during our popup mode,” asking, “Remember, we ran the theatre for two years in pop-up mode?” Joyce said AMSA helped, along with the town, to get the theatre into pop-up mode, “which gave us a lot of information, and moved us to the next stage, which is the operations and renovations taking place now.” Anyone interested in learning more about the progression of the Ashland Theatre’s renovations, or has any questions for ATF, may contact the nonprofit organization by email at:cotutheater@gmail. com.
