ECHANICSVILLE – A first-grader at Mechanicsville Elementary School and his mother have joined in sharing Dr. Temple Grandin’s story with all 15 elementary schools in Hanover County Public Schools. Dylan Gilbert and his mom, Candice Gilbert Ramsey, have successfully placed a copy of “The Girl Who Thought in Pictures” in the schools through the efforts of donations. Candice explained that her son loves to sing,
draw, spend time with his cousins, and be silly. “He also has autism.” With the addition of the book, she said all of the schools agreed to read and include the book during the Dec. 4-8 observance of “Inclusive Schools Week” with the purpose of bringing attention to inclusion in the classroom. “All of our kiddos deserve to feel accepted and included in the classroom because being different is what makes everyone so neat,” she added. Candice is a member of the Special Education Advisory Committee for HCPS. Inclusive Schools Week is observed the first week of December, so she “wanted to do something for Hanover County Photo submitted by Candice Ramsey Gilbert to bring awareness.” Since the designation is late in the year, Candice Dylan Gilbert is shown with Mechanicsville see BOOK, pg. 7

installed four grazing systems, three of them through the Virginia Agriculture BMP Cost-Share and Tax Credit program. His herds are regularly moved to maximize the quality and quantity of forage growth and have been excluded from more than two miles of streams, creating more than 20 acres of buffers along those see SWCD, pg. 4

In addition to the best management practices on his pastureland, Wingfield also plants multi-species cover
crop mixes during the fallow season to prevent soil erosion, scavenge excess nutrients, and improve soil health. He implements continuous no-tillage techniques on all of his cropland and works closely with the SWCD staff to manage nutrients applied to his cropland, a practice essential to avoiding excess nutrient runoff.
Over the past two years, Covenant Woods has been implementing a landscaping safety and beautification project with the leadership of resident Dick Gibbons, Landscape and Garden Committee member. The continuing care community collaborated with Landscape Architecture students at Virginia Tech to create a design, conducted a charrette
with residents, and secured a landscape design architect to create a phased master plan. In 2016, Covenant Woods applied for urban cost-share from the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program (VCAP) to fund several portions of the master plan, essentially a suite of urban best management practices interlinked around the original retention
pond area. To date, the funded practices include impervious surface removal, an expansive native plant installation, a butterfly garden, and permeable pavers for a pergola area. In July 2017, the Covenant Woods Native Landscape Demonstration was accepted into the Virginia Treasures Program. The declaration

By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News Hello Pinterest, it’s me, Roslyn. I know it’s been awhile since we’ve spent much time together, and I want you to know that I’m sorry about that. I do regret deleting your handy app off my smart phone, too, but after “the incident” with the glue gun last Easter I thought we needed some space (obviously, the firefighters agreed). Now, however, it’s the Holiday Season, and I could really use some help. I’ve got so much stuff to buy, to wrap, and to bake, and I just don’t think I can do it on my own. I’ll be honest: Before I met you, I felt pretty confident in my ability to wrap a Christmas present reasonably well. But now I realize that I was a fool. Just searching you for the term “gift wrapping” produced such a blindingly brilliant array of perfectly turned-out presents that I began to wonder why I’d never thought to hand-paint delicate holiday scenes on my own handmade organic wrapping paper. I thought a present was “wrapped”
simply because there was paper on all sides of it, never stopping to consider the relative merits of choosing a “rustic,” “minimalist,” or “Hawaiian Luau” motif. Seriously, Pinterest, what have I even been doing all these years? Also, yes, I may have attempted once or twice over the years to bake a cookie or pie on my own, typically ending up with what I assumed were perfectly edible results. Oh, how blind I’ve been. I now understand that a cookie with less than 14 ingredients is a sad addition to any dessert buffet, worse even than a one-layer cake. And, as we all know, a pie with a name your average native English speaker can pronounce is pretty much just another way of saying “Why bother?” No, Pinterest, I realize now I was wrong to ever think I could give you up. Faced with the prospect of simply going out and purchasing a bunch of things I’m pretty sure my family members would like, I realize that it is far more prudent to stay up half the night reading your list of suggestions entitled “126 Perfect Presents for the Man in Your
Life Who Has Everything, Hates Fishing, Refuses to Pick Up a New Hobby, and Doesn’t Like To Travel.” Pure magic, that one. So, now that we are back together, I want you to know, Pinterest, that I am really looking forward to hearing your suggestions on how to festoon my mantle, host the perfect Norwegianthemed holiday cocktail party, and make the Christmas season super special for my dog. A festive alpaca sweater and handmade antlers, you say? He’ll love it! (Actually, he’ll hate it, but the photo is sure to grab a bazillion likes.) I have to go back to work now, but I promise we will be spending much more time together as the big day approaches (only 17 shopping days left, yay!). Until we talk again, keep coming up with all of those 47-step projects and ways to turn old stuff I was going to throw away into new stuff somebody else will throw away. I’m sure my glue gun is around here somewhere. Roslyn Ryan is editor of The Goochland Gazette.

I must have an eternally annoyed look on my face by nature. As I stood third in line at a local drug store, a customer at the register pulled

Resident doesn’t want zoning in SSA changed I do not want existing neighborhoods in Hanover County damaged by developers that buy up and knock down existing houses for sale, and then build multiple houses on the single home lot, next to existing single home lots, thereby ruining existing suburban neighborhoods. That is what is happening in Berkeley, California. Do not change the zoning for existing neighborhoods in the Suburban Service Area (SSA). Your next door neighbor can sell their house to a developer and they will build 3.5 houses on it, next to you, in the SSA? Is this an incorrect assumption? Suburban Service Area (SSA): “Suburban General Land Use (1.5 to 3.5 dwelling unit per acre density). “The Suburban General designated land use includes attached and detached single family dwelling residential development within the SSA. “This designation is intended to accommodate the housing expectations and changing trends for existing and future residents and projected population increases through flexible lot sizing, variable density, provision of recreational areas, and preservation of open space. “Compatible Zoning Districts: RS (B-i, BO may be considered when immediately adjacent to an existing non-residential land use designation) Suburban High Land Use (3.5-8 dwelling unit per acre ).” Thank you for your serious consideration of the impact of this change. Candice said she has delighted in receiving photos of kids reading the book, as well as presenting it to vice principals. “It’s been a huge thing for the committee and the school board, she added. She is hopeful that the observance and the book’s placement in all the elementary schools will bring more attention to inclusiveness. “Some parents may not know that their school has the book. Candice encourages parents to ask: “Are you reading this book to my student’s class? A goal is to bring more awareness to the fact that the book is available. RICHMOND -- A Hanover County dentist pleaded guilty last Wednesday in a four-year health care fraud scheme that netted more than $783,000 from Medicaid and four dental insurers. Maryam E. Zarei, 47, of Glen Allen, the owner and operator of Atlee Station Family
Dentistry in Mechanicsville, mission of claims to insurance pleaded guilty to one count companies for reimbursement and, from of health care fraud. She Maryam E. of adventure, the love of a family and heroism. I am hesitant to provide too much detail regarding the man’s biography for fear of intruding uninvited in a grieving family’s private memories, but, suffice it say, the widow’s description was accurate but lacking in many of the deceased accomplishments. The man was a talented illustrator with his work displayed at numerous state museum sites and landmarks. That career had followed a stint as a navigator on a B-17 at an Army Air Corps bomb group stationed in Britain during World War II. Just as his widow said, he was listed and recognized in the American Air Museum in Britain. After learning a small portion of this man’s life story, it struck me how life goes on around us and we perform our routines oblivious to the trials and tribula-
tions of the people who surround us. While my day had been generally good, this poor woman in line had just buried her husband and was probably headed home to sit alone and contemplate her future, alone. Through her devastation, she mustered strength and energy to let a small group of strangers know the story of her husband. Her loyalty and love are inspiring and offer a message of dedication and loss for all of us. I didn’t enter that store expecting to learn anything or gather any information that could be considered useful. The lady’s words were an unexpected gift on a routine day, and the story of her renaissance man won’t be forgotten. It also reminds me that we should never be too busy to listen, or lend a thoughtful ear of compassion to those around us who may be suffering. She told me his story . . . And I told you.

one dollar bills and coming back for double bagging, the widow stopped just short of the exit and told us, now a group of four or five persons in line, the name of her husband, complete with phonetic spelling. “He was a hero in World War II and flew some of the first bombing missions into Germany,” she said. “Look it up. You’ll see.” Now, I’m not sure if some others in line paid attention to her words, but I’m quite convinced some others didn’t believe or care about the story. But, the name of her husband stuck in my mind, and I returned home and searched what I had heard on my computer. First of all, the gentleman had just passed days earlier and was buried that very day, just as his widow had relayed. I also learned of a life well lived, full

Survey: residents enjoy high quality of life, feel safe By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Residents of the Town of Ashland enjoy a high quality of life and feel safe, according to the results of a survey conducted by the National Citizen Survey Results. Damema Mann, representing, NCSR, presented the survey results to Ashland Town Council during the Dec. 5 regular meeting. This was the third time that Ashland has had NCIS conduct a survey on its citizens. The The survey’s key focus areas included: safety, mobility, natural environment, economy, built entertainment, recreation and wellness, education and enrichment, and community engagement.
previous years it has conducted the survey include 2011 and 2014. NCIS performed the survey on a scientific sample of 1,500 households, of which 417 households completed surveys, with a margin-of-error of plusor-minus five percent. The survey’s key focus areas included: safety, mobility, natural environment, economy, built entertainment, recreation and wellness, education and enrichment, and community engagement. Mann’s presentation provided the key findings of the survey’s results on these differ-

ent focus areas. The results showed that most of the people living in Ashland feel safe. “Virtually all residents said they feel safe in their neighborhoods, and that they feel safe in Ashland’s downtown and commercial areas,” Mann said. Showing their findings on mobility within town, the presentation explained how mobility shines in Ashland, and residents prioritize transportation improvements. In other business, Mike Davis, director of public works, reviewed snow emergency routes with council mebers. The information is available at www.town.ashland.va.us. Town Manager Joshua Farrar and Clerk of Council Joseph Collins discussed the town’s five-year financial plan with council. Resolutions recognizing two longstanding Ashland Parks and Recreation Department employees, as well as the retirement of an Ashland Police Department investigator, brought a crowd of proud families and friends to the meeting. The two resolutions recognized Davis and Steve Trainham, a longtime and devoted laborer in the department. Davis was hired as the director in 1987. For 30 years, he has led Ashland public works, as well as serving the town in many other roles when needed. He has served as interim town

Silent auction, concert benefit church Shiloh UMC hosts events at Montpelier Center for Arts & Education By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local MONTPELIER – Dancing and live music were among the festivities on Friday, Dec. 1, when the Shiloh United Methodist Church held its “Shiloh Silent Auction and Cobalt Whiskey Concert” at The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education. Montpelier and Beaverdam area residents joined with other members of neighboring communities in partaking in the auction, as well as dinner. Purchasing a ticket for $1 was only required for those who wanted to bid on any of the items. The event was free for folks who only wanted to come and look. Coordinator Wendy Haupt said she was excited about the annual event and concert. She also serves on Shiloh UMC’s Administrative Council. “The Shiloh Silent Auction is always
the first Friday in December. The event is the one major fundraising event for our church; proceeds from the event are used for the continued functioning of our church and for local and worldwide missions,” she said. Shiloh UMC collected canned goods for WHEAT (Western Hanover Emergency Action Team), as well as coats that will be donated to Puritan Cleaners to then be distributed to those in need. “At the silent auction, you will find gift certificates donated by local restaurants such as The Houndstooth Café [at Hanover Courthouse], The Pasta House in Mechanicsville and Portofino Italian Restaurant in Montpelier,” Haupt said. There were many other donations such as houseware items, jewelry, Christmas decorations and automotive items. They also sold raffle tickets for a dollar each to win a queen-sized handmade quilt. “The quilt is reversible and handmade by our church member, Nancy Smith – it is absolutely beautiful,” Haupt said. Dinner, including pork barbecue,
hotdogs, sodas and multiple types of desserts, was on sale for attendees. “We also [were] excited to have [the] Cobalt Whiskey Band in concert at The Montpelier Center on Dec. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. while the silent auction [was] in progress. Cobalt Whiskey has a strong following in Hanover County as they are a great country band with Christian members playing music and having a fun time,” Haupt added. She talked about how the church wanted to bring the Cobalt Whiskey Band to the event as they felt it would draw a more diverse crowd and would allow Shiloh to reach out farther into the Hanover County community. Saying how they are a small, rural Methodist church, Haupt said, “We love our community and enjoy bringing Christ’s love into the community and to others in many different ways.” She was grateful for those who joined “Us in raising funds to continue to bring Christ’s message and love to others throughout Hanover County and throughout the world. We are one in Christ.”

Swim teams launch new season, swimmers By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Hanover County has long been the source of some of the best swim teams in the area – in part because Hanover County had one of the few school systems in the area that offered swimming as a Virginia High School League-sanctioned sport. This year, Chesterfield County joined the club. Despite the increased competition – which includes the benefit of real regional rivalries as well as postseason competitions with local teams instead of forced travel to Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Northern Virginia or the Roanoke area – the swimming tradition is strong and the talent at county schools is as deep as ever, though in some cases it is relatively young and inexperienced. Hanover Hanover, anchored on the boys’ side by University of Tennessee commit Patrick Townsend, starts the season as arguably the best team in the county. The Hawk boys finished second in the VHSL Group 4A state championships in both 2017 (to Jefferson Forest) and 2016 (to Jamestown). Time will tell if they have the depth to prevail this year. The task of winning a state title is made more complicat-

Other leaders among the Hanover boys include seniors Ross Newton (co-captain with senior Josh Altman), who was also a member of the champion 200 medley relay team; and senior Marshall Brooks, another member of the champion medley relay team. Promising underclassmen include sophomores Luke Daley and Jack Hufner, both of whom qualified for the Group 4A state championships last year. Daley finished sixth in the 100 backstroke in the state meet. The Hanover girls, captained by seniors Kayleigh Gordon and Bella Seip, should get a lot of points from senior Ellie Sherry, who signed with Southern Connecticut State University and freshman Natalie Culley, who posted the team’s second-fasted 100 freestyle time earlier this season. Hanover head coach George Massey expects a breakout year from senior Claire Grant, a state qualifier who was injured most Dave Lawrence/The Local of last year. Hanover senior Marshall Brooks swims to a third-place finish in the boys 100-meter backstroke in the Hawks’ swim meet against The Hawks got their season Patrick Henry at Randolph-Macon College’s Brock Center on Nov. 28. times,” Altman said. “We’ve only had two, three weeks of practice and a lot of people are showing improvement from last year, which is a big deal.” That being said, there are things they can work on. “It’s always the same,” Massey said. “Every year we talk about streamlining. Streamlining. Streamlining off the walls. They do great off the start, maybe the first turn, but when they get tired, it just falls apart a little bit because they get tired and they want to come up and get air real quick. Streamlining, and finishing races. Right now we’re not in the best shape, so our strokes break down at the end of the races some.” One can expect the Hawks will be doing much better at the end of the season, which is saying something given that they have started the season quite strong. Atlee The Raiders are relatively young, with 20 swimmers competing at the high school level for the first time. They lost a number of key contributors to graduation last year, but of all the county teams, they may be in the best position to challenge Hanover for county dominance this season. “We are fortunate that we have continually had lots of depth,” said Atlee head coach Karen Seeber. “While we lost some important players to graduation last year, we have such a quality pool of swimmers that we don’t any glaring holes or weaknesses in our roster.” Seeber said the Raiders are especially strong on the girls side – their girls team may be the best in the county. The boys team is also strong, but graduations hit them especially hard last year. Seeber’s challenge is to get the abundant newcomers acclimated to the Atlee system.

Dave Lawrence/The Local
Patrick Henry’s Melanie McAdoo swims to a secondplace finish in 1:12.53 in Hanover’s swim meet against the Patriots at RandolphMacon College’s Brock Center on Nov. 28. McAdoo, who is already making her presence felt in Patriot swim meets, is one of a number of talented freshman expected to contribute to the success of Patrick Henry’s team this season.
“We are a young team,” Seeber said. “That being said, our major focus is on our student leaders, both captains and non-captains, empowering them to step forward and embrace these first timers as they acclimate to our program. “With about 40 percent of our team being new to us, it’s important that we bring them on board quickly to continue forward with the team culture and traditions that have been established as a part of Atlee swimming for so long.” The Raiders’ senior statesmen will be senior Sonora Baker and junior Ashley Zicafoose on the girls team and seniors Trevor Gammon and Jared Jones on the boys. Gammon and sophomore Logan Amatruda are the only two Raider boys with state meet experience. Patrick Henry The Patriots, who have been in rebuilding mode the past two years, may be the smallest team in the county, but they have grown, and that growth should pay off in points in regular season and in qualifiers for postseason. “For the first time in a couple of years, we have a full allotment,” said Patrick Henry head coach Bob Flanagan. “The gentleman’s team, for the past couple of years, we’ve had only

11 swimmers. You have to have 12 in the water to not hand the other team points. So we’re really excited about the fact that we’ve filled the slots that we’ve needed to. … We’re headed in the right direction on that.” Patrick Henry’s boys team will likely be anchored by junior Ethan Spencer – a year-round swimmer – and freshman Paul Datovech, who has shown quite a bit of in Greater Richmond Aquatic League events. Another key swimmer is Ben Schubert, a returning team captain who swam well against Hanover on Nov. 28. “He’s dropped a little bit of time tonight and gotten reamped and excited about his future prospects in a couple of events,” Flanagan said. “We’re excited to see what he does with leadership.” Another team captain who shows promise is James Powell, who took a year off last year. On the girls’ side, the Patriots will be led by junior Claire Evko and sophomore Kayla Maxey. Team captains are seniors Shelby Nash and Rachel Walsh. Those are not all of Patrick Henry’s potential stars. “We also have some young swimmers. We’re excited to see what they’re doing, such as [freshman] Melanie McAdoo, who had a great meet tonight,” see LAUNCH, pg. 28

Wrestling teams reach for continued success By Monica Hunsaker For The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER – The 20172018 wrestling season is well underway in Hanover County. The Central Virginia Classics at Glen Allen suggested Lee-Davis will remain a favorite throughout. The challenge for the Confederates and other county teams will be staying healthy. When that is not possible, less experienced wrestlers will have to step into the breach. Lee-Davis The Confederates are arguably the best team in the county and one of the best in the Richmond metro area, an argument bolstered by their win in the Central Virginia Classic at Glen Allen High School on Dec. 2. The team is looking to build on last season’s momentum, where it finished fourth in the VHSL Group 5A state championships. Returning powerhouse Andy Aldridge, reigning Group 5A champion at 160 pounds, started the 2017-18 campaign in excellent fashion, besting Millbrook opponent Xever Lemieux in a 14-5 decision for the Central Virginia Classic 170-pound championship. Teammates Ned Anthony, Jonathon Conrad and Fisher Evans are also anticipated to continue as key players in helping the Confederates keeping a tight grip on the competition. Junior Noah Loving (132 pounds) also gave a memorable performance at the Glen Allen tournament, securing second place. Newcomer Dylan Montgomery nabbed third at 160 pounds in what was his first tournament for the Confederates. These two promise to bring a lot to the team this season.

Above, Atlee’s Terence Haynie wrestles Douglas Freeman’s Tyler Thomas in the 126-pound division in the Central Virginia Classic at Glen Allen High School on Dec. 2. Haynie lost a close decision, 6-4. Left, Lee-Davis 106 pounder Austin Montgomery scores more points in a 16-0 technical fall victory over Mlilbrook’s Cody Glover.
Sophomore Evan Buchanan is certainly one Raider to watch. The promising newcomer lost to a senior from Patrick HenryRoanoke, Theo Thaxton, to finish as Group 5A runner up at 113 pounds. This season Buchanan is off to a dominating start. Now competing at 120 pounds, he outpointed Grassfield’s Christian Schumaker (21-7) to Atlee he knows his guys are quality “I’m expecting every single win a Central Virginia Classic Though Gabe LaVey’s Atlee performers and will carry the one of these guys to step up this championship. another Raider to keep an eye on. The 285-pounder grabbed second place at the Central Virginia Classic, after his Millbrook opponent, Tavon Blowe, eventually bested him in overtime. Adelstein finished third in the state last year in the 220-pound weight division. Senior Stephen Call contributed to Atlee’s strong performance in the Central Virginia Classic, pinning Douglas Freeman’s Jake Liberatore to cinch the 170-pound division title. Even Atlee’s newer faces came to Glen Allen fired up. James Haynie (106 pounds) ensured the competition took notice of him, taking third by defeating Lee-Davis newcomer Austin Montgomery in a 15-5 decision. The Raiders finished second out of the 16 teams competing in the Central Virginia Classic, coming in second only to rival Lee-Davis. “My expectations for this entire team this season are high,” LaVey said. Hanover Hanover’s Hawks felt strong in the preseason, but were forced to shift their team dynamic entirely when injury rocked both senior champions. Coach Larry Allen said both 2017 4A State Champion David Hoover (145 pounds) and 2017 4A State Third Carson Allen (160 pounds) were sure favorites to win state titles this year, but both suffered devastating shoulder injuries just as regular season practice began. Coach Allen feels this loss on multiple levels, as Carson is not only a valuable athletic asset to his team, but is also the coach’s son. “When you’ve been doing this with your boy for so long, see REACH, pg. 28

ing crucial guidance to his lessexperienced teammates. This ability to lead is why he and Fox together serve as their team captains. “Wrestling really is a team sport, but it’s also up to the individuals whether or not the team wins,” Arnold said. “I think I picked some really good ones for this squad.” Another selection the Patriots got right was that of assistant coach, Jeremy Smith. Arnold said the Patriots can expect more involvement from Smith this season. “After 37 years, the kids are a bit too strong for me now, but Jeremy is energetic and has really been a godsend this season,” Arnold said. “He’s come in, taken his responsibilities and just run with them.” Monica Hunsaker can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

it hurts,” Allen admitted. “At the end of the day, it’s just wrestling and you move forward.” The Hawks are doing exactly that, utilizing Allen and Hoover’s expertise to rapidly build the Hawks young, yet hungry team. “The young guys really look up to them, so I keep them engaged as much as possible,” Allen said. “They’re always in practice; you can find them in the corner, coaching.” And the younger Allen has maintained the positive outlook engrained in him through the wrestling lifestyle. Instead of lamenting the abrupt end of his wrestling career, he’s focused his sight on a long-time dream to serve in the Marine Corps. His father’s pride in Allen for such an “honorable” choice, has replaced the sadness of missing out on a final season to coach his boy in the sport they love. As the only senior Hawk now competing, Aaron Huffman (152 pounds) will have to carry the team to some extent, as will juniors Tristan Halsey and Jordan Smith. Halsey placed third in his 138 division at the Central Virginia Classic, while Smith (126 pounds) is returning after he missed most of last season due to concussion. Jeremiah Hunsaker (113 pounds) is another junior who coach Allen noted showed great promise, due to the wrestler’s off-season dedication to sharpening his skills. Sophomore Josh Epperly (145 pounds) is expected to have a great season too. Allen believes the 2017 state qualifier can go even further than last year. Sophomore Will Gaugler (120 pounds) looks promising this season and is expected to find his stride. Newcomers Jack Epperly, Aden Halsey and Kole Kienzle have also helped cement their coach’s faith that the team can become a powerful force. “We’ll always be clawing for

Fox defeated Huguenot’s Isaiah Knight on Dec. 2 at the Warriors Stampede. Junior Chad Burger is set to be “a force to be reckoned with,” according to Arnold, who attributes Burger’s strong team leadership to a military fam-
ily background. Arnold said it’s been a valuable asset to the Patriots. Jacob Jenkins (160 pounds) has only this season left to leave everything on the mats. “Even with a lot on his shoulders, he does his job and I have nothing but respect for this young man,” Arnold said of the senior, who will join the army after graduation. Carolyn Patience Smith Tyler, 81, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 8, 2017. She died peacefully at home surround-
ed by her family. Carolyn was born in Tarboro, North Carolina, on July 1, 1936, to the late Thomas W. and Mary Burnette Smith and moved to Mechanicsville when she was a child. She graduated from Washington Henry High School and Smithdale Massey Business School. She married Edward L. “Lloyd” Tyler Sr. on March 23, 1957. Carolyn was a multi-talented person who lived life to the fullest. She loved singing and was a very gifted piano, guitar and ukulele player. In high school, she played basketball and softball and also was a cheerTYLER leader. Before starting her family, she worked as the secretary to the governor of Virginia. Her passion was to serve the Lord and her family, and she did both with absolute excellence. She was active in her local church all of her life. In 1989, she became a member of Mechanicsville Christian Center, where she served faithfully in the
Resource Room for over 25 years and sang in the choir and Christmas productions for numerous years. As a wife and mother, she served her family with all of her heart. She was a shining example of what a matriarch of the family should be. She was supportive and involved with all of her children’s activities and interests, including being a Girl Scout leader, little league sports enthusiast, and horse show administrator. She also was the accountant and secretary for the family business. She loved nature and animals, especially horses, dogs, birds and hummingbirds. She also enjoyed fishing, boating, going to the beach, flower and vegetable gardening, and horseback riding. She also was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. But what she will be remembered for most was her gentle, loving spirit, her total selflessness, her love for the Lord and her family, and her passion for studying the Word of God in-depth. Left to cherish Carolyn’s memory are her husband of 60 years, Edward L. “Lloyd” Tyler Sr., her four children, Debbie Thompson, Barbie Carman (Bill), Edward L. “Sonny”
Tyler Jr. (Melinda), and Terri Blake (David); grandchildren, Joshua Tyler (Sarah), Sarah Thompson, Nicki Clemson (Andrew), and Cory Tyler (Christa), and greatgrandchildren, Zachary Tyler, Emma Tyler, Cason Clemson, and Maiverly Tyler. She also is survived by numerous cousins, and close family friends Patty Jenkins, Frances Bales, Martha Duval, and Shelia Krzak. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home at 8014 Lee-Davis Road, with Pastor Carter Goolsby officiating. A reception will follow at noon at the Mechanicsville Christian Church. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, December 13, 2017) at the funeral home. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Kindred Hospice for their care and support of Carolyn in her final months. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mechanicsville Christian Center, 8061 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23111.
They said it’s a family-friendly production “that we’ve worked very hard on for the past few months.” Preparing for “The Nutcracker” started in August. Anne Wash owns the Central Virginia Dance
Academy and serves as director and choreographer. Rehearsal time as an entire company could last 12 hours some days, while other it may be six. Kaitlyn and Allie said the Mechanicsville area has been well represented for years
with the dance academy and “The Nutcracker” performances. “We encourage the community to support their dancers – it’s just a great holiday tradition to do with your family.” “I’m getting emotional that it’s my last year,” Allie said.
Kaitlyn added, “It’s a great time right before Christmas, with a lot of families [attending].” The girls took part in the 15-minute performance during the Dec. 1 Light Up the Tracks! event in Ashland. Performances at the Glen Allen Cultural Center start

First Baptist shares spirit of season with gift boxes By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- An internationally recognized charity program was carried out successfully at the First Baptist Church of Ashland this holiday season, with 4,006 gift boxes being shipped and delivered to children in need who are living in Third World countries. This year’s program proved to be an amount much larger than previous years. “Operation Christmas Child” (OCC), which is operated by Samaritan’s Purse, an Evangelical Christian humanitarian organization, strives to bring joy, spirit and the New Testament’s message to children who otherwise wouldn’t receive much, if anything at all for the holiday season. Churches, other organizations, private businesses and members of local communities across the United States and the globe participate, fill shoeboxes with items such as school supplies, hygiene products, toys, and pamphlet litera-
ture, “The Greatest Gift,” taken from scriptures in the Holy Bible. Debbie Haley and Pam Stiles, two members of First Baptist Church who coordinated the operation, talked about their excitement in obtaining so many shoebox donations. As for what they receive, Haley said, “It varies – here at First Baptist, we put supplies there [such as] a clothing item, a cup, a spoon, a ball of some sort, and literature.” Stiles said their church isn’t the only group that participates in Ashland, pointing out how Chik-Fil-A also uses its location as a collection center. “They have different distribution centers across the state where they process the boxes . . . Every box has to be [processed] to make sure there’s no inappropriate items in them, Stiles said.” She also said that OCC is very organized and that hundreds of thousands of people and volunteers are involved. Haley has travelled to

in our little room that we call ‘Santa-Land’ . . . It’s kind of like a clothing store.” They said they received 500 donations when they collected shoeboxes during a Sunday church service. “We would love to find a way to get more community involvement,” Stiles said. There’s a dropoff center at the First Baptist in Ashland for people who want to chip in on the holiday spirit next year and donate. Samaritan’s Purse offers tips for organizations to use
that will help them in getting community groups to share ideas and become involved with Operation Christmas Child. Some of these tips include: hosting a “packing-party” by inviting members of the public to join them and bring items to fill shoeboxes, promoting OCC as a service opportunity for their group, and by rallying their group around a shoebox goal as well as establishing a specific day to collect their boxes. “We do it because we have a heart for children who are in these countries with nothing – but the main reason is [that] we want to get them to understand why the reason we’re doing this – is because we want them to know about Jesus,” Stiles said. This year, First Baptist Church served as a collection site for shoeboxes during a period of seven days between Nov. 13-20. To participate next year, go to www.firstbaptistashland.com.
