What’s in a name? Group seeks changes at 2 schools By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- What’s in a name? To some, it’s a recognition of a long history of pride and a recognition of the men who fought those battles and preserved that heritage. MECHANICSVILLE – A community meeting to discuss a new park in eastern Hanover was well attended last week, and, according to Greg Sager, director of Hanover County Parks & Recreation, the reception to plans was positive. On Thursday, Dec. 14, 62 peo-
ple attended the meeting at Grace United Family Church on Beulah Church Road. Sager said the turnout was “packed,” with plans having been made for only 55. He said there was very little discussion about what to name the park, but the desire for trails dominated the talks. As for amenities, Sager said, see PARK, pg. 8

VDOT completes project Bell Creek Road and U.S. 360 relocation, widening done Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has completed a project to relocate the southern portion of Bell Creek Road at Mechanicsville Turnpike (U.S. 360) to the east to align it with the northern portion. Crews also widened U.S. 360 between Interstate 295 and Bell Creek Road from three to four lanes. Finally, a continuous through/right turn
lane was added in both directions between Bell Creek Road and Wynbrook Lane. The relocation project began in spring 2015 and now accommodates a higher volume of traffic and provides congestion relief. For more information on VDOT’s ongoing, proposed and recently completed projects, visit http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/richmond/default.asp. Memories flood in as Christmas Day arrives
| Reader Views
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor (Editor’s note: This column first appeared in the Dec. 24, 2014, edition of The Mechanicsville Local.) My sister was always the best on Christmas Day. Without disturbing our parents, she was so agreeable when her little sister bounded out of bed to rush into the living room to see what wonderful gifts Santa Claus had left under the tree. And, how impressive was this: Santa always had our gifts separated on either side of the tree to avoid any confusion. Although, with her being four years older and our wish lists being polar opposites, there was no question as to which gift was for her or yours truly. That anticipation and excitement of Christmas
Eve and Christmas morning changed with her death in 2011. I miss her every day and cherish the memories of our experiences. They seem more pronounced with family gathering through the holiday. Thanks to my brother-in-law, a tradition they established in 1986 continues with the Tacky Lights Tour. My sister delighted in spending time with her family, especially two nieces — now young women. The elder niece was the reason the tour became a Christmas staple. Memories of my father — who left us suddenly in 1992 — engulf us. He was such a big kid. Mom has shared the story so many times of the Christmas that Dad barely got the Barbie Dream House completed before their youngest child (yes, that’s me) would run to find that Santa had delivered it. Well, it was on the wish list.
And then there was the Christmas edition at my hometown newspaper that nearly had a typographical error that, thankfully, was caught just before we went to press. With a nice nativity scene, I had included Luke 2:11 (King James Version): “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Well, this writer had mistakenly submitted Davin instead of David. Coincidentally, a community named Davin is in my home county. Thank goodness for an eagle eye staffer. Having grown up in a home that attended church regularly and celebrated the birth of Jesus, there was always the knowledge of why we were exchanging gifts and joining for a feast at the dining room table. Merry Christmas!
There can be so much more involved a simple wave By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist I’m probably the least informed person on the earth regarding award shows of any variety, but a recent College Football Awards ceremony did catch my eye. The annual Disney Spirit Award recognizes amazing feats off the field that changed lives or created opportunities for less fortunate fans or play-
ers. This year the award went to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the University of Iowa football team and its fans. While I don’t know much about award shows, I am acquainted with Children’s Hospitals and have spent considerable time dealing with them in the past seven years since my son was diagnosed with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy. It’s a sad irony, or perhaps a bless-

I’ve often dedicated columns to the people who are my heroes — the men and women who research, treat, care for, and love a special group of
children who depend on their compassion. They hold the key to our childrens’ futures, and assist and support families like mine through the challenges of dealing with a chronic and cruel disease. And many of those heroes are found in Children’s Hospitals across the nation, the latest one opened last winter adjacent to the University of see WAVE, pg. 8

Resident takes issue with healthy lifestyle At the Dec. 5, 2017, Hanover County Planning Commission meeting, the new Active and Healthy Living Section (Bike Trails) of the new Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan) was discussed. In this discussion, David Maloney, director of planning, stated that Hanover County was not doing well on health outcomes. Mr. Maloney must have missed the report by Deputy County Administrator James Taylor back on Oct. 25, 2017, on health outcomes in the State of Virginia. Out of 133 Virginia jurisdictions, Hanover County ranked 19th on health outcomes and 18th on quality of life. Hanover County is a healthy and a great place to live. Hanoverians are managing their own health and wellness quite well thank you. We do not need Hanover County to mandate our lifestyle. What we need from Hanover County is action on the county needs to fund road and sewer-water improvements If the rush to develop continues, hundreds of millions of dollars will be required. Our board of supervisors has already approved enough development to provide a 1½% growth rate for the next eight years with no regard for roads or anything else. The only word to describe this is irresponsible. The words Rural Character were used to describe Hanover County. Very soon the only thing rural about our county will be our narrow unimproved roads full of bumper-tobumper traffic with no help in sight. Larnie Allgood Mechanicsville

“Everybody wants major trails, walking trails, places where they can jog – that was mentioned numerous times. We had a few folks that asked about whether our playground that we put out there will be accessible to those who have special needs or mobility issues.” “There were only a couple of folks that really weren’t thrilled with having the park located there. I think most of them are very accepting. Most of them seemed excited seeing it there,” Sager added.
The biggest concern appeared to be roads “and some issues that are obviously beyond our scope with the park,” he said. “They’re not happy with VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation), but they’re concerned about additional traffic to what they feel are roads that are not quite up to the quality they could be.” Sager said the new park spans 55½ acres, 40 of which had been owned by the Hanover County School Board. In comparison, Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville and Poor Farm Park in Ashland cover over 200 acres.

“It was designated for a future school in the eastern part of the county. Rhu (County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr.) went to the school board and asked about the possibility of conveying it back to the county and they did that in 2015. Soon after, we were able to buy the 15½ acres.” He did say that the county has a communications tower at the site. “The neighbors knew that was always a possibility that [the land] was going to be developed out there,” Sager said. “This is the new design in Hanover,” he continued, adding that the county will “be looking in the western part of the county in coming years.” As Parks & Rec develops more parks, they will be smaller than Pole Green and Poor Farm. Attendees did express concern about the water in the area of the new park. It isn’t in the Suburban Service
Area, which means the county does not provide water there. “A number of them (those in attendance) have had issues with wells over the years and they wanted to make sure whatever water we obtain for the park won’t take from the citizens and the local parks there.” He said there is “supposedly an abundance of water there [at the park site].” While multipurpose rectangular fields were discussed, Sager said “everyone understood” that aspect of the park. Lights for any athletic fields are not included in phase one of the project. Sager said the goal is to prove “ourselves as good neighbors before we add lights.” The other county parks, he said, are an example of how the county “can maintain a decent buffer and not impact those who are next door.” He said those attending the meeting “understand the need for the parks.” Scheduled for an hour,
the meeting ran for two, with those wishing to ask additional questions invited to stay. In addition to Sager, Scott Courtney, the contract engineer with Resource International, was at the session to answer questions. As for a time line, Sager said, “It will probably be a year from now before we look at beginning construction.” Interest was expressed in a splash pad for the new park. Sager said that takes a lot of water even if it is recycled. “We’ve heard from a number of folks, ‘Oh, a splash pad would be really cool.’ We might have to look at one of our county parks that has county water [for that].” The name didn’t attract much attention, so Sager said Parks & Rec staff will most likely meet with Scott Wyatt, who represents the Cold Harbor District on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, “and move forward on that in the next month or so.”

with enthusiastic and loyal fans, sidelines dotted with ultra talented athletes and coaches, and a group of special children watching from the adjacent window of Stead Children’s Hospital.
And, somehow, they are all connected. A simple post on social media made the subtle suggestion for fans to acknowledge and wave to the kids as they watched from the 12th floor or the adjacent Children’s Hospital. The post went viral and when 75,000 fans gathered for their first home game, a new tradition was born at 90-yearold Kinnick Stadium when the first quarter ended. In a simple show of compassion, love and friendship, the fans took a moment of their time to smile and wave and to show compassion and understanding for the kids who peer anxiously from the windows. I would imagine it’s safe to say a longstanding tradition was born that day, and the Hawkeyes won much more

of the Hanover County School Board. Rider contacted The Mechanicsville Local the following day with her concerns. “If they would research the history of Lee-Davis High School, they would learn that instead of saying the school name was in retaliation to integration of schools because of the timing, which is nonsense. The timing was that 1960 was just before the centennial of the war. Virginia was making a huge deal of it for the tourism and everything Confederate was popular. The name had nothing to do with race or desegregation,” she said. Rider said those who appeared during the public comment portion of the school board meeting on Dec. 12 had said “they had a 1,200-signature petition and a 300-signature -which was started by someone who has moved out of the state of Virginia -- generated from see GRADUATE, pg. 9
that a gridiron victory on that fateful afternoon. As Coach Ferentz accepted the award at the recent event, he noted that his players know who the real heroes are in this story and who are the special stars on those Saturdays. Now, that collective hug may not equate to earth-shattering news for many or even most college football fans. But, for families and those whose lives have been touched by special children like the ones at that Iowa hospital, it means everything. Congratulations to the team, coaches, fans and supporters of Iowa football on this special recognition, but, most of all, kudos to a special group of heroes who are on the 12th floor, hopefully peering through what I’d call a window of hope.

Lee-Davis current faculty and students. “The supporters of LeeDavis have approximately 5,000 signatures on our petition, she said. Rider questioned whether any of those who spoke before the school board had any children attending Lee-Davis. “I and my supporters have current students at Lee-Davis. Leave the students alone who only know of Lee-Davis High School being their school and are proud to represent the school. She also questioned the motives of those speakers. “Lee-Davis High School will be celebrating their 60th year in 2019, Rider added. She said that, in her opinion, “They have gotten their 15 minutes of fame and this should be the end of this ridiculous war against Lee-Davis High School. “I am a 1977 Lee-Davis High School graduate and I am very proud to say it and repre-
sent this fact. I am very visible at Lee-Davis and when I walk these halls that I attended many years ago I am very proud to hold my head up high and I am not alone feeling this way with the supporters and LeeDavis alumni in keeping the Lee-Davis name as it has and always will be, Rider said. “The Hanover County School Board has been very vocal as to issue a public statement that ‘They have no desire to change the school’s name’, she said.“This witch hunt has got to stop. Rider praised the academics at Lee-Davis, saying that the high school was among the four in the county selected to take part in the Advance College of Academy program. Twenty-five students each were chosen from Atlee, Hanover, Patrick Henry and Lee-Davis. “Patrick Henry and Lee Davis are the teaching schools for this college program. Lee-Davis athletes excel in the sports they participate in. Rider did say she will continue to support not changing the schools’ names and will take her cause to the school board if necessary.

Last week, Hanover code officials served a search warrant on the property searching for violations related to a number of residents housed in the facility. During a public comment period at the Dec. 13 meeting, a number of former patients and current residents expressed their support for the program. And its founder was not pleased with the county’s latest efforts to manage the facility and expressed that displeasure as he addressed the supervisors. Souces told The Local the latest search warrant was only one episode in a continuing series of attempts to close the facility, including fire department inspections. Shinholser told supervisors that local treatment programs are the key to addressing a national opioid abuse problem that has touched almost every community in the nation.. “We’re in a state of emergency, Shinholser said. “The
main solution for addiction recovery . . . is provided by authentic recovery support providers. “I know the county does not want us here because of the action of serving a search warrant on our house to count beds. How can you say it’s against the law to save lives? Shinholser asked. He contended the facility is protected by the Federal Fair Housing Act and told supervisors he is monitoring every action in the event a lawsuit is necessary. “Y’all reflect on what you are doing when you send the police and bureaucrats down there to infringe on our right to exercise our constitutional freedoms in this county, he said. “I’m irritated, but don’t think we can’t overcome this. Daniel Payne appeared before the board accompanied by his wife and two of his three children. “This is recovery right here — me, my wife and my children. This is what a product of
sober living looks like, Payne said as he pointed to his family. “I want to express my 110 percent support for sober living environments and housing in this county and I hope we have more, he said. Payne owns and operates a business in Hanover County, but “more importantly above and beyond any of that, I just recently celebrated 15 years of continuous recovery. Honesty Liller is the CEO of the McShin Foundation and also a former user who found recovery through Shinholser’s efforts. “I am a woman in longterm recovery, she said. “McShin saved my life. I had nothing and now my life is completely amazing. To be able to help in my hometown is an empowering feeling. Supervisors listened to more than a half dozen supporters or former residents who all voiced support for the women’s sober living facility located off Georgetown Road. Mackenzie Payne also is in long-term recovery and has
turned her life around thanks to sober living environments and the people who reached out to assist. She also voiced support for the Sober Living House operated by McShin. “It’s a beautiful house. There’s so much opportunity for these women and I am really thankful that they are here.â€? Chair Angela Kelly-Wiecek said anyone having questions regarding sober living facilities and the rules that govern them should contact county attorney Sterling Rives for clarification. “I believe I speak for the entire board when I say that the opioid crisis is something we take very seriously and we are committed to it,â€? she said. “We understand how important recovery community is, but we also understand that what we have to have is a set of laws that apply to everybody. ASHLAND — The Hanover Christmas Mother Program received two gracious donations from organizations in the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area, confirming the holiday spirit throughout the region and assuring families in the county who are in need will get helpful supplies this season. Cindy Balderson, the 2017 Hanover Christmas Mother, said she was grateful for the outpouring of support from around Central Virginia, saying it encourages others. The Richmond Area Bicycling Association (RABA), and students and their families who were involved in this year’s Junior Assembly Cotillion made contributions to the Hanover county Christmas Mother. “The Junior Assembly

Tours traverse historic areas in town Holland-Axselle site shows great promise for town A By Logan Barry for The Mechanicsville Local
SHLAND -- Two guided walking tours with receptions were hosted by the Ashland Museum on Sunday, Dec. 3, through some of the town’s downtown residential streets. Both tours included Ashland’s “Historic Race Course Addition,” an area of downtown near the railroad tracks that used to be a horse racetrack before the Civil War. The receptions, which followed the 2 and 4 p.m. tours, were held at Charles Sthreshley’s historic house at 402 Duncan St. This residence was the former home of Chris Chenery, the owner of Triple Crown winner Secretariat. The racetrack and jockey club were built in June 1860 by Edwin Robinson, president of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad (RF&P). Betsy Hodges, representing the Ashland Museum, said Robinson had been embezzling money to fund the racetrack. In addition to the other buildings, there was a grandstand. Hodges said she did not know the physical size of any of the buildings or the track. As for the location of the race course, Hodges said, “Tracks run due north and south, so it’s pretty parallel to the railroad tracks.” She also said they only had one map, and did not know the exact location of the course. Hodges added that rail-

road tracks aren’t exactly north and south, but that “somewhere between Duncan Street and James Street would have been the middle of the race course, and it would have probably run from Snead Street, south – maybe as far as Francis Street.” She said the horse racetrack was successful until a downturn in the economy, when they were forced to declare bankruptcy. “That area was used as a training ground for the cavalry during the [American] Civil War,” Hodges said. During the Civil War, besides being used as cavalry training grounds by the Confederate Army, it was used as a hospital for wounded troops.

After the war ended, RF&P put the race course up for sale. Also during that time, Randolph-Macon College opted to move its location to where it is now, which then used to be a hotel property. Eventually, “the RF&P started developing the race course property into a residential area,” where it was then divided into lots. Hodges said the turnouts for the tours were good, with “two full tours of 20 people each.” She also said participants “were interested in seeing the house. Charles [Sthreshley] has done a wonderful job of restoring the [home].” This year’s tours and receptions marked the
fourth year that the Ashland Museum has hosted the event. The tours, along with the walking tours of Woodland Cemetery, are fundraisers for the Museum. Money raised goes toward supporting the costs of developing new exhibits, working in their archives and the ongoing expenses for “Ashland Museum Inside Out,” a program that includes five walking tours, including the recent one. To learn more about Ashland Museum Inside Out, go to ashlandmuseum.org or call 804-368-7314. The Museum is located at 105 Hanover Ave. in the Town of Ashland, across the street from Ashland Town Hall.
ASHLAND -- A prosperous economic development opportunity recently coming to light in the Town of Ashland, known to the local government’s managing the process as the “Holland-Axselle site” or the “Holland tract,” is in a shovel-ready state, as officials plan for how to develop it. It recently received one of the highest designations in terms of site-readiness for a greenfield site in Virginia. Over the summer, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced phase two of the Virginia Business Ready Sites Program (VBRSP), which awarded
eight development grants for the most eligible properties throughout the commonwealth. McAuliffe’s VBRSP granted Ashland $29,500 that the town can use for site assessment and development. This includes: environmental assessments, wetland delineation, boundary survey, infrastructure design and development as well as other costs associated with improving the site. VBRSP declared the Holland-Axselle site as being eligible for a “tier four” classification. A news release on governor.virginia.gov described a see SITE, pg. 17

tier four classification level as meaning that all infrastructure is either already in place on the site, or will be deliverable within one year, as well as the property’s permit issues having already been identified or quantified. “The Virginia Business Ready Sites Program is a valuable tool that helps to identify and improve marketable sites for prospective businesses,” McAuliffe was quoted as saying in the July 19 news release. Tier four and tier five sites are designated as being more pad ready, and allow for the town and Hanover County to better promote these types of properties more effectively in terms of competition, as corporations and businesses want to move quickly when looking to expand operations. Background “The background on this property is that it’s been farmland, and still is actually,” said
rezoned to “light industrial” zoning (M-1). “[The town] proactively rezoned it to ‘M-1’ zoning – so that was a big step for us – to recognize that,” Topham said. Originally, he said the plans for the site were to develop it into a residential area. Later they came to a conclusion that there wasn’t a beneficial market for housing on that particular parcel. Topham said this is the “last, best opportunity for a greenfield development,” and thanked county officials involved, saying, “[They] have done a really good job at managing this process.” What comes next? Currently, the site’s preparations are being finalized for companies and businesses that are interested in looking more into the Holland-Axselle development’s future opportunities as they consider any potential investments. “Hanover County works very closely with the Town of Ashland on the market-
ing aspect of their major economic development sites. The Holland-Axselle site is a very important property for the town, county and now the Commonwealth of Virginia with the most recent grant award from the Governor,” said Linwood Thomas, economic development director for Hanover County. “Only eight localities in the commonwealth received a site-readiness grant, which Timmons Engineering Group has undertaken to bring the site from a tier two to a tier four designation. Tier five is the best possible designation in Virginia.” Topham also talked about the potential opportunities this site could have to offer under the desired circumstances. “This site can be transformative for good jobs for Ashland residents and Hanover residents surrounding [town],” he said. He said they’ve communi-

Joe Topham, business retention and expansion manager in the Town of Ashland’s economic development department, during a Dec. 7 tour of the Holland-Axselle property. Topham said the HollandAxselle site used to have a rural zoning designation, and that it had been annexed by Ashland in the1990s. Holland-tract’s land area – consumed by thick underbrush, forest and pastures – is on the town’s rural edge of its northern corporate limits with Hanover County along U.S. 1 (North Washington Highway). The vacant parcel sits directly across the street from The Supply Room Companies. “The gentleman who owned it has passed away and his daughter, [Linda Wright], is looking to develop the property,” Topham said. On April 5, 2016, Ashland Town Council approved REZ-1113, which included an amendment to the town’s Comprehensive Plan that allowed the property to be

schools. A number of speakers took advantage of a public comment period at the Dec. 12 Hanover County School Board meeting to express their opposition to the names of two county schools, Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School. One speaker acknowledged the sitting board had no influence on the naming of those schools, but said the responsibility to right those wrongs clearly rests in their corner. Others said the school names and mascots is a sad irony to the stated goals of the current school board, a list that highlights equity and access for all students. “These schools and mascot names were not bestowed during the Civil War era or for anyone who lived in Hanover, but during the era of massive resistance to desegregation to send a message to AfricanAmerican students and families that they were not welcome, said Hueina Su, the mother of two Hanover students and leader of a group called Together Hanover, one

Henry District representative and board vice chair Sean Davis made it clear that the board did not initiate the search warrant. “To the best of my knowledge, I had no idea that it had been issued, he said. “This was an administrative search warrant. I think Mr. [David] Maloney [planning director] as the one who petitioned that. Davis said he’s concerned about recent actions regarding Shinholser’s Sober Living House. “I think we’re headed down a road that is more than rocky right now and we have to figure
of the groups supporting the change. “C o n f e d e r a t e - n a m e d schools and mascots promote and support ideals representing white supremacy and the enslavement of AfricanAmericans, which by definition are not inclusive or welcoming, she added. Su suggested the board adopt a policy to address the name change and hire a consultant to guide officials through the procedure. The group presented school board members with a petition signed by its members, citizens from all seven magisterial districts, supporting a name change for the schools in question. A petition was signed by at-large citizens, many of them from the Lee-Davis and Stonewall Jackson community, also expressing a desire to change the names. History In a letter delivered to school board members earlier this year, a former Lee-Davis student named Mary Murrell provided an extensive history of how the names of the two schools were chosen. The new eastern high school was completed in out what is going on, he said. Davis said he was informed by Maloney that two deaths had occurred in that home, but could find no evidence of those passings. He said he also was concerned that administrative action was taken without the advice and consent of policymakers in the county. Davis said he was unaware of any action taken as a result of the search, but would continue to seek answers regarding exactly what happened. County officials have contended the facility is located in a residential neighborhood and has not been approved as a group home. The facility was opened
1958 and relieved overcrowding at two high schools in the area, Battlefield Park and Washington-Henry. Newspaper accounts from the period revealed that juniors at those existing schools were polled for their preferences regarding a name for the new school. The names of Robert E. Lee and William White, a former teacher at both schools killed in World War II were chosen, but B.W. Sadler, Henry District representative on the school board at the time, settled on the name Lee-Davis and it was approved. Despite the passage of Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954, Hanover County was one of several counties in Virginia that continued to support segregated schools until 1969 when the state’s massive resistance laws were declared unconstitutional. In that first year of limited integration, the Hanover school board named its new middle school in honor of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson. Impacts Another speaker recalled see NAME, pg. 20

Joan Powell Sherry, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, December 11, 2017. Raised in Emporia, she came to Richmond after high school to work at VEPCO (Dominion Energy) and remained employed there until her retirement. She enjoyed her leisure time and friends in Duck, North Carolina, and her golf group and her fantasy football league. She is survived by her brother, William J. Powell Jr. (Frances); nephew, Douglas Powell (Elke); two nieces, Susan Kratzer (Karl) and Nancy Norman (Bob).
sphere of separation and resentment that marred her high school experience that she described as “sad. “It’s been 50 years but I still feel the pain. Think about it. Davis said it was difficult to find allegiance with a campus that glorified the Confederate heroes, and said attending pep rallies was an especially degrading experience. “It was so humiliating because they would play Dixie and all the students would stand and clap their hands, Davis said. “I could only sit there and watch in horror. To top it off, there was always one student who would do the Rebel Yell and parade around the floor with a large Confederate flag. Manda Sesko is a 2010 graduate of Lee-Davis, and told board members the name does not reflect the diversity present in the school. “When you consider the name Lee-Davis and the roots from which it stems, it’s certainly not an accurate representation of all of its students, faculty or surrounding members of the community, Sesko said. “People of color and other minorities are an integral part
of this community and they deserve to be represented, no marginalized, she added. Another former student of both schools is a Hanover schools success story. Amanda Lineberry still holds the record for her mile runs at Stonewall Jackson and Lee-Davis, attended the University of Richmond on a scholarship as a result of her academic and athletic experiences at Lee-Davis and now attends law school at the University of Virginia. She urged board members to consider changing the names that she considers insults to minority students who attend the schools. “It is impossible to deny that Confederate symbolism is inextricably linked with white supremacist terrorism, Lineberry said. “Supporting this change does ot require that we all feel the same about the Confederacy. It require that you not force students to have “C-fed Pride, knowing that what white supremacists with “C-Fed Pride invaded a town an hour down the road and took the life of a a young woman. She noted that the change will require one important action on the part of the school board.
“It requires that you recognize and respect the dignity of those who disagree with you and foster an educational environment where they, too, can thrive. Lineberry said she realizes many of her friends and family will not agree with her position on the name change, but she listed a number of reasons for coming forward to support the coalition supporting the action, including her dedication to her alma mater. “I said ‘Yes’ because I cherish my time at Stonewall and Lee-Davis and it is out of this love that I hope to see them change for the better, Lineberry said. School board members do not respond to public comments issued during the meeting, but chairman Sue Dibble thanked the speakers for their remarks and said the board heard their concerns. One board member provided a statement indicating his intentions on a possible name change. Cold Harbor representative Norman Sulser said, “Speaking for myself as one board member, I do not plan to initiate any action to change the name of any schools in Hanover County.

cated with the property owner numerous times, and they’ve talked with the state and they’re working with county officials. “We want good jobs coming to Ashland, and we want steady revenues coming off the site.” Topham also talked about
the possibility of having darkfiber dragged to the site, which is located along CSX-owned railroad tracks, and how that could potentially raise the land value. While there is not a specific plan set in place yet regarding prospects for what will end up being constructed in the development, when asked, Topham reiterated a potential ideal option
that was discussed in 2016 during town council’s rezoning process – a medical park. “We do hope that something in the medical field will be looking in our area, and that this site would stand out to them.” He also mentioned advanced manufacturing – because it would provide good jobs for people who don’t nec-

So much of the project is simply getting the site ready for as many of the best users we can envision, and then marketing it to as many of those as can be found,” Topham stated. He said they are “Hopeful that we will see some movement on the site in the near future, but understand that finding the right fit may take longer. Right now, our focus is on having the site as technically prepared as possible for these possibilities.” Other benefits to economic development for the town, Topham said, is how “The tax revenues coming off the site will help the town in improving their interstate corridor and Main Street districts . . . The revenues from this are going to help us essentially underwrite the other projects we’re going to need to be [working on] for the next 15 years.” He said the town does have the ability to eventually have rail service to the site. “It’s a preferred option for us.” Topham said the state’s inventory of properties like
this is low. “When you hear about something big going on, they’re looking for sites like this. So, this is where it starts; this is where all those big things start, with pine forests and farms like this.” About 5% of Ashland’s corporate land mass is made up of the Holland tract’s 286 acres. Thomas also emphasized the importance of site-readiness, and was hopeful the property would generate jobs.
market their properties and to utilize the funds to get their sites closer to the development stage, where grant opportunities are available, as they have done with their strategic rezoning initiatives. “We must continue to build off that to include infrastructure investments to be more competitive,” Thomas said. That is, he added, the overall end goal for economic development. It is “To help grow the tax

Depending on which type of industry you attract there, Thomas said there was no way of telling right now. “You don’t know – they could bring 200 jobs, or they could bring 400 jobs . . . But at the end of the day, that is a site that we hope will attract good jobs – if we find a user that will fit the character of the county.” He said Hanover County’s plans are to continue working with landowners, helping them
base and create quality jobs for the citizens of Hanover County. Helping be a catalyst to develop and attract the best companies and corporations is a major component to what we are tasked with doing. We have a great asset with the Holland-Axselle tract and we are working hard to market that to a prospective end-user that will create good jobs and bring revenue to our tax- base,” Thomas said.

South clamps down in 36-16 Rivalry win By Andrew Blair For the Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – The South team, sparked by a dominant first half, rolled to a 36-16 victory over the North in the Big River Rivalry all-star high school football game Saturday at Randolph-Macon College. The South controlled the game from the start, building a 23-0 halftime lead. Monacan quarterback Syour Fludd, who showed moments of brilliance, delivered the dagger by finding Tink Boyd (Trinity Episcopal) for a 27-yard touchdown with 3 seconds left in the first half. After the North won 59-14 last year, the South showed determination, trimming North’s series lead to 3-2. “This is just fun. You don’t have to teach ’em. You just put the plan in front of them. It was a great time,” said South coach Adam Tiller. “After the way the game went last year, we knew this result was going to happen. We could see it happen. We’ve had a feeling there was going to be a turnaround this year.” Fludd finished the first half with two touchdowns and went 7 for 11 for 83 yards. His impact belied the statistics, though. Looking trapped on several occasions, he used his feet and feel to improvise in Houdinilike fashion, escaping for gains and finding receivers when he appeared swarmed in the
ask: Just be better than me. Be the best person that you can be.” Thomas Dale running back Elijah Burns helped buoy the South’s ground attack, running for touchdowns of 29 and 22 yards in the first 24 minutes. He broke a couple of tackles and raced into the end zone to make the score 10-0 in the first quarter and relied on his field vision to punch the ball in during the second quarter, increasing the South’s lead to 17-0. The final two quarters featured seesaw scoring. The South assumed command in the third quarter 29-3, after a touchdown rumble from 4 yards out by Korey Bridy (Monacan), who ran for a game-high 117 yards. Jalen Hargrove of Lee-Davis had the North’s most memorable play, refusing to go down on a 75-yard pass reception for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, the North tried to set up a quasimiddle screen in its own territory. But South defensive end Blake Williams (Dinwiddie) adroitly stepped in the way, the football found his outstretched right hand, and he raced up the right sideline to score from 41 yards out for the game’s only defensive touchdown. Henrico wears down stubborn Hawks By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local HENRICO – The Hanover boys basketball team showed toughness and potential on Tuesday night when it jumped out to an early double-digit lead at Henrico. The Hawks, however, were unable to hold on, falling to the traditional region power 72-61. The game was marred by fouls, as a combined seven players fouled out of the contest. Hanover finished the fourth quarter without Donnell Sims, Trevor Brooks, Colin Hudson and William Fahed. Henrico was without Timon Jones, Tamarcus Lemon and Jahme Ested for extended times. Hanover grabbed the early advantage thanks to an 11-3 run over the last half of the
first quarter. Fahed scored six straight points during the run to break a 7-7 tie. The Hawks held an 18-8 advantage at the end of the period. Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the basket at the start of the second quarter. Hanover kept the clamps down on Henrico guard Timon Jones and held a seven-point advantage, 25-18 with 3:09 left in the half. The Hawks were held to one point, a Jaylin Ross free throw over remainder of the period. Meanwhile, while Jones was held in check, Ested stepped up to provide a scoring and defensive punch for the Warriors. The Henrico sophomore scored seven of his 11 first-half points in the final 2:15 of the half, see HAWKS, pg. 31

Confederates dominate in Holiday Classic By Daniel Fritz For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Lee-Davis has developed into one of the best wrestling teams in the area, and it showed it Friday and Saturday by cruising to victory in front of its home crowd at the Lee-Davis Holiday Classic. The Confederates had all but sewn up victory before the championship round, leaving their guests scrapping for second place. Lee-Davis scored 264 team points, besting second place James River by nearly 120 points. The Rapids scored 147.5 points, followed by Warhill with 142. “We always want to win our own tournament, in front of our fans and alumni,” said LeeDavis head coach Craig Spruill. “It definitely gets the season going on the right foot.” Spruill and the rest of the Confederate faithful certainly had a lot to be proud of, LeeDavis also crowned five individual champions – one of which was Andy Aldridge (170 pounds) who was also named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. “It feels really good to get this win for the team,” said Aldridge following his impressive championship victory – a 22-4 technical fall over Armstrong’s Josh

including a lay-up following a steal that gave the home team a 27-26 advantage headed into the break. “That’s usually their team, where they’re going to be a deep team, playing 9 to 10 guys and they have a lot of athletic guys,” said Hanover head coach Darren Thornton. The second half was a back-

Crawford. Aldridge took control the match early and never let up. “Honestly, it is just another win,” Aldridge said. He believes this victory will help kick-start the season in the right direction. Fellow Confederate Ned Anthony also made quick work of his opponent in his championship match in the 195-pound division. He needed just over a minute to pin his competitor Warhill’s Josh Farley. For Anthony, the result wasn’t much of surprise. “We put a lot of work in the wrestling room and the weight room,” Anthony said. “It feels good to see the results.” Anthony is hoping his early undefeated record will carry him towards his ultimate goal: capturing an elusive state championship. and-forth battle of runs and attrition that featured five ties – four in the third quarter. Henrico scored seven straight points coming out of the break, but was answered with an 11-1 run by Hanover that featured a pair of 3-pointers by Sims and that was capped by a long-range shot from Fahed. Hanover led 37-35 following the junior’s shot. It would be the Hawks’ final lead of the game, however.
The teams locked the score three more times following the basket, but Henrico used a 7-0 run to build a lead, and ultimately led 48-44 going into the final frame. As players began to foul out in the fourth quarter, Hanover had trouble finding the offensive punch to mount a comeback. A Ross 3-pointer tied the game at 50 with 6:45 to play, but it was the final tie of the game. The Warriors doubled up
the Hawks down the stretch to bring the game to its final margin. Four Fahed free throws got the game as close as four points in the final 90 seconds, but Henrico finished on another 7-0 run. Ross and Sims each scored 17 points for Hanover while Fahed added 15. Thornton said Ross and Sims, a senior-and-freshman combination, are beginning to work well together in the back
court. “They are two of the better guards in the area,” Thornton said. “[Sims] is a freshman, so he’s finding his way and finding out what he needs to do. He and Jaylin are starting to get a good bond and a good relationship out there playing together.” Ested led Henrico with 16 points while Jones had 13 and Dominique Bailey had 12. Records tumble down in Hawk swim meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Swimmers wrecked records like the late Who drummer Keith Moon wrecked hotel rooms in the third Hawk Invitational at Collegiate School Aquatic Center Saturday night. The meet opened with six straight meet records in six events. On the boys side, all but four of 11 events featured new milestones. One the girls side, all but one meet record – in the 100 butterfly – was broken. One of the new kids on the block – Cosby High School, in its first year of offering swimming as a varsity sport – swept both the boys and girls titles. The widespread felling of old meet records came as no surprise to Hanover head coach George Massey. “Knowing the competition that came in new this year – with Cosby, Monacan, Deep Run, Douglas Freeman – I knew they were all quality swim teams, so I could see that a lot of these records would go down,” Massey said. “It became a fast meet this year. It grew up.” Cosby’s boys edged last year’s champion, Western Albemarle, 421-392.5. Monacan, another school offering swimming for the first time, was third with 218 points, followed by LeeDavis (206) and Hanover (204). Cosby boys swimming head coach Matt Porter said having swimming as a club sport for a couple of years prior to going varsity made it easier to transition to varsity competition. Even so, the Titans had not experienced the pressure and excitement of a big meet like the Hawk Invitational. “We’d been swimming a lot of dual meets within the county, some double duals, so we really the first time we had the experi- area participating. Gymnasts limber up for 2017-18 season By Andrew Spencer for the Mechanicsville Local Most of the county’s gymnastics teams begin the 2017-18 season looking a lot like their 2016-17 squads, with experienced gymnastics returning to lead their teammates to continued postseason success. Even where squads where hit hard by graduation, depth – with an influx of talented newcomers – should boost opportunities for extended seasons. Patrick Henry Madison Bray is in her fourth year as the head coach of the Patrick Henry gymnastics squad, and she is clearly confident in her team’s chances this season. “I think that this year’s team has the potential be really strong,” Bray said. “We’ve got some talented girls coming back, and we only lost one gymnast to graduation.” The Patriots feature arguably the most talented gymnast in the county in senior Sierra Baxter. The Patriots figure to be strong competitors in all four events, something their coach attributes to the team’s collective work ethic. “They’re all striving to practice as hard as they can to get competition-ready in all four events,” she said. Bray thinks that her team is in pretty good shape for a few years to come. “We have more than one or two girls to keep your eyes on as the year go by,” she said. Both Ambra Eddleton and Taylor Woody have a lot of potential, Bray said. She thinks that as they mature in the sport, they’ll keep Patrick Henry gymnastics in the spotlight. definitely have in their favor is depth. “We have 18 girls on the team this year,” Withers said. “They all do their part in making us a stronger team. Each team member brings something special to the table.” Hanover Caitlyn Berry comes into her third year as the head coach of the Hawks, and she is hoping to have a repeat of the success she had in her first two years with getting girls to the state tournament. “We’ve had girls qualify for state the past two years,” she said. “I think this year should see a few more from this team go.” Two new additions to the Hawks’ roster should help Hanover meet that goal: freshmen Holly Johnson and Avery Herdon. Both girls are active in both in-school and club gym-
nastics competitions, and Berry described both as very talented. Berry said the team’s strength is its spirit: “As a team, I think one of our main strengths is that all of these girls really support each other,” Berry said. “They keep each other going when things are going so well, and that is such a huge help when you’re out there competing.” Hand-in-hand with that emotional support, Berry cited a lack of confidence on the part of some her gymnasts as the team’s biggest weakness. “I’m always telling the girls that the most important thing they can do in any meet is give their best effort,” she said. “I am really working to build their confidence. Once they get that, I think we’ll be in pretty good shape as a team.” Andrew Spencer can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

CANCER • Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, there is a time for joking around and a time for being serious. This week you may have to lean toward the latter. Others may not share your joviality right now.
LIBRA • Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, think financial decisions through before acting. Patience is a friend when making important financial decisions, and it’s time to take such matters more seriously.
TAURUS • Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, if you are feeling upset because someone is getting more attention than you, you may need to focus your thoughts elsewhere. Think of what makes you special.
LEO • Jul 23/Aug 23 Running yourself ragged, especially early in the week, will cause all of your energy stores to fizzle out, Leo. You need to learn to pace yourself better for the long haul.
SCORPIO • Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, try something outside of your wheelhouse in the coming days. You have a knack for teaching yourself new skills, and you are a fast learner.
GEMINI • May 22/Jun 21 Your emotions may be all over the map in the coming days, Gemini. The secret is to surround yourself with people who will guide you in the right direction.
VIRGO • Aug 24/Sept 22 You are always one to lend a helping hand, Virgo. But now you may need to call in some favors of your own. Don’t be afraid to ask for help this week.
SAGITTARIUS • Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you might be seeking answers in the wrong places. Refine your parameters and look in a new direction, especially if a resolution is taking awhile.
CAPRICORN • Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, if family life is taking over and tiring you out, shift your gears in another direction. You need to recharge and let your other interests take over for awhile. AQUARIUS • Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, words shared at work may have you worried you’ve burned some bridges. It’s not the case. Others still look to you for help and guidance and value your input. PISCES • Feb 19/Mar 20 It’s common to make life assessments throughout the year, Pisces. Jot down some easy changes you can make for the future.
